Best Local Multiplayer Games on Current Gen Systems. While local multiplayer may not be as prevalent as it once was, there’s still plenty of great local multiplayer games available on PS4, Xbox One, and Wii U. The last generation of gaming saw an unfortunate trend begin. Developers started releasing games without any local multiplayer or co-op options, forcing people to play online if they wanted their multiplayer fix. While there is something to be said about the benefits of online multiplayer gameplay, there are many gamers that prefer to sit on the couch with friends, and enjoy gaming as a more social experience. Those gamers may feel as though there aren’t many options for them on the PS4, Xbox One, and Wii U. However, there are actually quite a few games with local multiplayer functionality for players to enjoy on the eighth-gen systems. The 13 listed below are especially great, and should be enough to satisfy anyone’s craving for good, old-fashioned couch multiplayer. Borderlands: The Handsome Collection. First up is something for those that enjoy a little loot-based RPG elements in their first-person shooters. Borderlands: The Handsome Collection brings together remastered versions of Borderlands 2 and Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel! , and it significantly improves the local co-op functionality of those games in the process, adding rare 4-player split-screen support for the campaign. Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare. The Call of Duty franchise has long been a champion for local multiplayer, and so far the best representation of that on current gen systems is Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare . The game offers split-screen for competitive multiplayer, co-op, and through its DLC expansions, the challenging Exo Zombies mode. While the most recent game in the series, Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 , released to stronger reviews, it disappoints in the local multiplayer department, with weak split-screen that makes text nearly impossible to read. This gives Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare the edge over its successor, and it’s why Advanced Warfare has our recommendation over Black Ops 3 . Diablo 3: Ultimate Evil Edition. The Diablo franchise has provided engrossing co-op experiences since its inception, and Diablo 3: Ultimate Evil Edition carries on that tradition. Bundling the Reaper of Souls expansion with an enhanced version of the core Diablo 3 experience, Ultimate Evil Edition is the best way to enjoy Diablo 3 ‘s addicting brand of dungeon crawling, hack-and-slash, 4-player co-op action. Gears of War: Ultimate Edition. Admittedly, one is likely to have the most fun with Gears of War: Ultimate Edition in its online arenas, but the game also has plenty of support for the local multiplayer-minded gamer as well. This includes split-screen online for Gears of War ‘s popular competitive multiplayer modes, and a campaign built entirely around the local co-op gaming experience. Halo: The Master Chief Collection. Halo: The Master Chief Collection had a rough launch, but with those problems mostly cleared up by now, players are free to enjoy the game for its excellent multiplayer. The Master Chief Collection features 4-player split-screen for versus multiplayer, and 2-player split-screen for campaign co-op across the first four games in the Halo series, with the option for split-screen online as well. This stands in stark contrast to the latest game in the series, as Halo 5: Guardians has no split-screen at all. Here’s hoping that Halo 6 takes after The Master Chief Collection , and Halo gets back to its local multiplayer roots. Mario Kart 8. Mario Kart 8 is the best selling Wii U game for a reason. It is the deepest game in the Mario Kart series to-date, offering an unprecedented number of tracks and racers, while also expanding the game’s level of vehicular customization. Mario Kart 8 continues the franchise’s focus on quality local multiplayer experiences, allowing up to four players to enjoy the game in split-screen. Nidhogg is a game about dueling with swords, with the goal to escape via the opponent’s side of the screen. Its simplistic gameplay creates an interesting dynamic of cat and mouse, and while it may not have a huge budget like other games on the list, it’s hard to find a local multiplayer experience as purely entertaining as Nidhogg . Rare Replay. When one is looking to relive the glory days of local multiplayer, it’s hard to go wrong with the nostalgic romp that is Rare Replay on Xbox One. For the unaware, Rare Replay collects some of the developer’s finest video games from its 30-year plus existence. A number of those games also include some great multiplayer components, with Conker’s Bad Fur Day and the Perfect Dark games as standouts. Rocket League. Rocket League may very well be the king of indie multiplayer games right now, mixing soccer and cars to tremendous results. A surprise success, Psyonix Games has managed to keep the large Rocket League community engaged since launch with frequent updates that have enhanced the 4-player split-screen game both online and off. Players can download Rocket League right now for PC and PS4, and an Xbox One version of Rocket League is coming soon. Super Mario 3D World. In Super Mario 3D World , Nintendo takes the gameplay style of Super Mario 3D Land on the 3DS and translates it to the television screen. This larger real estate allows Nintendo to include 4-player co-op in Super Mario 3D World , with players able to take control of Mario, Luigi, Peach, or Toad across the game’s many brilliantly designed 3D platforming levels. Players will want to work cooperatively to fully complete the game, but at the same time, there is a sense of competition to see who can earn the most points by the end of each stage. Super Smash Bros. for Wii U. The ultimate fighting/party game franchise is Super Smash Bros. , and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U is the most robust game in the series yet. Super Smash Bros. for Wii U has 8 player matches, features an exhausting amount of game modes that can be played competitively or cooperatively, and also allows those playing together locally to take the fight online. Nintendo has managed to give Super Smash Bros. for Wii U additional longevity by releasing a steady stream of DLC for it, which has included some truly surprising guest stars, such as Final Fantasy 7 ‘s Cloud Strife. The Jackbox Party Pack. Traditional party games may be especially hard to come by on current gen systems right now, but The Jackbox Party Pack fills the void nicely, consisting of mostly adult-oriented entertainment through five different digital board games. The game strives to be as convenient as possible, allowing players to participate using their smartphones instead of a standard game controller. As our Jackbox Party Pack review shows, we’ve been enthusiastic about the game since its release, and it is still good for plenty of laughs at parties. TowerFall Ascension. TowerFall Ascension was once the premiere Ouya exclusive, but the game has thankfully made its way to more relevant platforms. It offers addicting co-op gameplay through a number of highly challenging stages, while also bringing to the table a chaotic versus mode for up to four players. Like Nidhogg , TowerFall Ascension ‘s simplistic design works in its favor, creating a local multiplayer experience that is easy for anyone to pick up, play, and enjoy. Since last generation, the trend has been for less games to feature local multiplayer, but it looks like things are starting to turn around, slowly but surely. In the meantime, the games on this list should keep local multiplayer enthusiasts busy while they wait for the next big release with local multiplayer support. Which local multiplayer experiences on current gen consoles have been your favorite? Do you wish that more developers made the effort to include local multiplayer in their games, or would you rather play with your friends online? Xbox Live now supports cross-platform multiplayer with PS4. Blockai uses the blockchain to help artists protect their intellectual property. At this point, there’s very little difference between the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4. But there was one key differentiating point. Xbox gamers could only play with Xbox and PC players as Microsoft was restricting access to the multiplayer component. Microsoft just announced that game developers can now create cross-platform multiplayer modes that work with other consoles and operating systems. So it means that the next Call of Duty or FIFA could feature a multiplayer mode that works with both Xbox and PlayStation gamers. It just depends on developers now. Microsoft has historically restricted cross-platform play as the Xbox Live was the first successful multiplayer network for consoles. The PlayStation Network only appeared with the PlayStation 3. And yet, Microsoft is now lagging behind the PlayStation 4 with its Xbox One. There are more online players on competing platforms, and Microsoft is now the underdog. By opening up cross-platform multiplayer, Microsoft could convince late adopters to buy an Xbox One even though their friends have a PlayStation 4. It’s also a way to make sure that there are enough players for less popular games. The first game that is going to support cross-platform multiplayer is Rocket League. Microsoft mentions cross-platform multiplayer between the Xbox One and Windows, but you can also expect support for PlayStation gamers as well given that the current version of Rocket League supports cross-platform multiplayer between PlayStation 4 and PC players. It’s unclear how developers are supposed to deal with duplicated PlayStation Network and Xbox Live screen names. For PC games that were using Microsoft’s online framework, these games will also work with other operating systems, such as OS X. And finally, Xbox players will be able to restrict multiplayer modes to other Xbox players only, but it’s unclear why you’d do that except if you’re a hardcore Xbox fanboy. Sony Responds to Microsoft’s Invite to Connect Xbox One and PS4 Networks. PSN custodian doesn't directly acknowledge Microsoft’s open invitation, but suggests it is open-minded to partnerships. Sony has issued an encouraging but indecisive response to Microsoft’s invitation to unite the online networks of PlayStation 4 and Xbox One within certain games. On Monday Microsoft publicly invited other platform holders to allow the same games to be played online across different console networks. Such an unprecedented move, if enacted, could bring an end to more than a decade of segregation between the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live. Sony’s response, issued one day later to GameSpot, suggests the market-leading platform holder remains open-minded about cross-console play but stopped short of discussing a deal with Xbox Live. "PlayStation has been supporting cross-platform play between PC on several software titles starting with Final Fantasy 11 on PS2 and PC back in 2002,” reads the statement from the corporation. “We would be happy to have the conversation with any publishers or developers who are interested in cross platform play." Sony's response was to a direct question about whether it would be interested in working with Microsoft. It is unclear how to read into Sony’s decision to avoid mentioning other console platform holders in its statement, whether that means it is still evaluating its options or is outright against such plans. GameSpot has contacted the corporation for further clarification. On Monday Microsoft made the eye-catching announcement that it will support cross-platform play between Xbox One, Windows 10, and other "online multiplayer networks." The move effectively opens the Xbox Live platform so that it can accommodate players on other game networks. The first Xbox One game announced to take advantage of this cross-platform connectivity will be Rocket League, which will soon allow Xbox One and PC customers to play against each other online. Such a feature is already present in the PS4 version, which has always allowed PSN players to set up matches with players on Steam. But Microsoft has indicated that it now wants to bridge the gap between its console and Sony’s, and went as far as saying the ground-work had been complete. On Monday its indie developer director Chris Charla said: "In addition to natively supporting cross-platform play between Xbox One and Windows 10 games that use Xbox Live, we're enabling developers to support cross-network play as well. "This means players on Xbox One and Windows 10 using Xbox Live will be able to play with players on different online multiplayer networks--including other consoles and PC networks." 10 Best Xbox One Multiplayer Games You Can Play Offline. Rejoice, for the resurrection of local multiplayer is upon us. Don't listen to the haters, local multiplayer is the best kind of multiplayer. Being able to see the distraught look on your buddy's face after you come back from 4-0 down to beat him in Rocket League, or fighting your way through a shooter or RPG literally shoulder-to-shoulder are experiences that can't be mimicked by online gaming. Now that the frenzy surrounding online gaming on consoles has died down, it looks like developers and publishers are finally starting to appreciate the value of offline multiplayer. The Xbox One has been getting in on this revival, and is now home to games from both humble indie developers and all-powerful AAA publishers that have been offering the kinds of experiences we fondly remember from the N64-PS2 era. So charge up your gamepads, get your buddies to bring theirs over to yours, and dive into some old-school fun with this list of the best offline multiplayer games available for the Xbox One. Xbox One Will Support Cross-Platform Multiplayer With PS4, PC. If you like playing online multiplayer games on your Xbox One but hate that you can never play your pal because she’s a PlayStation 4 devotee, here’s some promising news. Microsoft announced today that it is going to allow game developers to build multiplayer games that don’t just work on both Xbox One and PCs running Windows 10, but also on other game consoles. That means, in theory, a publisher wouldn’t need to support separate servers for just Xbox and just PS4 players. Instead, players from all platforms could commingle and annoy the heck out of each other regardless of what machine they’re using at home. What it doesn’t mean is that you can fire up some game right now on your Xbox and play your brother-in-law on his PS4. This is just the beginning of the process. “Of course, it’s up to game developers to support this feature, and Xbox Live players will always have the option of choosing to play only with other Xbox Live players,” explains Microsoft’s Chris Charla. Rocket League — a game that combines the thrill of remote control cars with… indoor soccer — will be among the first games to allow cross-platform play between Xbox One and PC, and Charla says there is an “open invitation for other networks to participate as well.” As TechCrunch points out, one speedbump to integrating Xbox and PlayStation players in the same game is the issue of duplicate screen names. We can’t have both KingBong4398s playing the same game at the same time. It could create some sort of time-space paradox… or just confusion about which one is on your team. Final Fantasy 15 Multiplayer Comrades Beta Begins Today On PS4/Xbox One. A limited slice of the Comrades expansion can be tried out for the next few days. Final Fantasy XV begins its transformation today from a single-player-only RPG to one with an online multiplayer component. Square Enix today has kicked off the PS4 and Xbox One beta for Final Fantasy XV's multiplayer expansion, Comrades. The Comrades beta allows players to create a character and team up with three other people online. It offers access to a select amount of content from the full experience; among other things, you don't level up, only some locations and weapons are included, there are only a handful of quests, and customization options are limited. Worry not, however, as you can dress up in a full-body Chocobo suit if you so desire. You can also wear a Chocobo outfit if you so choose pic.twitter.com/RAtPxU0RyZ. In order to take part in the beta, you'll need to own the base game and its season pass in addition to a PlayStation Plus or Xbox Live Gold membership, depending on your platform of choice. When Comrades officially launches in full, season pass owners will receive it for free, or you'll be able to purchase it for an as-of-yet undisclosed price. An official release date for Comrades hasn't been announced, but this beta (or Closed Online Test, as Square Enix calls it) is scheduled to run until August 8. The official website notes this is a "projected" date, suggesting that could change--betas often run longer than expected. And this is an actual test, as Square Enix warned players on Twitter of potential issues that may arise: "We'll try to ensure things run smoothly but please remember that this is still an online test." Final Fantasy XV's big July update launched recently, adding the long-delayed Magitek Exosuits and a new Cross Chain system, as well as bringing back the Moogle Chocobo Carnival for a limited time. Additionally, the RPG's signature vehicle, the Regalia, has made its way to Forza Horizon 3. Microsoft To Allow Xbox To Connect With PS4 & PC For Multiplayer. What do you take into consideration before committing to a certain gaming platform? Do you prefer to have a PC gaming rig that can always offer the highest graphics, power, framerates, customization and mod support, providing it is maintained and updated accordingly? Does PlayStation exclusive Uncharted 4 or Xbox’s Halo games translate to a loyalty to the corresponding platform? There are a lot of factors that gamers take into consideration when choosing what gaming system to dedicate themselves to. Not everyone is lucky enough to have the financial freedom to get both, after all. While the ‘fanboys’ may arguably be a dying breed, many active players still have their preferred platform to game on. Certain exclusive titles may still hold persuasive weight and so may the type of virtual reality headset available for each, but one key factor that often serves as the ultimate reason whether or not to buy a system (or just certain games for that platform) is: which one will allow you to play online with your friends? While you may prefer collecting trophies on Sony’s system, all your friends might be racking up achievement points on their Xbox. That could all be about to change as Microsoft wants to finally allow cross-platform multiplayer. Microsoft has issued an open invitation to developers to make gamers be able to play online against everyone, regardless of whether they are playing the title on Xbox One, PS4 or a PC. Nothing is set in stone but the announcement came yesterday on the official Xbox news site from Chris Charla, Director of ID@Xbox, in discussing new announcements related to feedback from developers. The potential for maximizing the multiplayer for titles like Call of Duty, Destiny and Battlefront to sports titles and everything in between is more than appealing and something our staff has said should have been part of the current generation of consoles since the beginning. Microsoft is already trying to combine both Xbox and Windows 10 platforms as a unified gaming platform, with cross-buy options for upcoming releases like Quantum Break but this takes it one step further. This is not necessarily a completely new initiative since Microsoft supported PC and Xbox 360 cross-platform play on Shadowrun years ago, and some games like Rocket League include the ability to play matches against PC players as well as console. But that doesn’t include non-Microsoft networks like Steam on PC. Xbox One and Windows 10 are part of Microsoft’s Universal Gaming Platform. In fact, Microsoft has notoriously been rigid and against cross-platform play historically which is why Portal 2 supported cross-platform play between PC and PS3, but on Xbox 360, players could only play with other Xbox players cooperatively because Microsoft wouldn’t open their closed platform up. The ability to challenge someone who has a completely different game console than you have has the potential to be massive, especially given the difference sizes of player bases between PS4 and Xbox One and the issues of certain game publishers signing exclusivity deals with one platform or the other. If everyone could play with everyone else who has the same game, regardless of platform, the shelf-life of online games and viability of DLC plans for game publishers could skyrocket. It will be down to companies like Sony and game developers to ensure this isn’t too good to be true though. So far Microsoft has only issued that they are open to making it happen. Sony will have to agree. Cross-network multiplayer and unifying the PC and console as a complete Xbox package is not the only game-changing trick that Microsoft is plotting. When the Xbox One was originally announced, there was a fierce backlash against the idea of needing a constant internet connection for it to function. There are a number of related features that Microsoft is now trying to reintroduce that may have been forgotten. One that they are looking into is the ability to share games bought digitally. Game Informer met up with head of programming Mike Ybarra, who explained the approach they are taking with it: Steam has a great family plan right now. We’re looking at both from a Windows standpoint – well, what’s our policy of the Windows Store? How many people can play concurrent? How do you share? We’re going to merge those two topologies soon so that a whole new model for how you share games across that will be in place. We’re actively working on that now to try to figure [it out], but we want to get to a much simpler model and potentially one that lets you do more… have a little bit more freedom in what you can and can’t do. Could we soon be playing multiplayer games across Xbox One, PS4 and PC? Will Microsoft’s massive shifts in strategy towards being more consumer-friendly mean all Xbox exclusives will come to PC as well? Will this help Windows 10 store and Xbox One console purchases? It could resolve a lot of issues when it comes to deciding what platform you need to buy The Division for – and if they also find a way to combine PSN and Xbox Live friend lists then the era of the ‘fanboy’ may truly be over for good. PS4 vs Xbox One: which is better? The definitive showdown between Xbox One and PS4. The Xbox One vs PS4 comparison is more important in 2017 than ever because both consoles are infinitely more powerful than the previous generation and both Sony and Microsoft tout their hardware as the absolute best. Who's right? Well, currently, there are two separate versions of both console: Sony has PS4 Pro and PS4 Slim, while Microsoft has the Xbox One X and Xbox One S. The PS4 Pro and Xbox One X represent the high-end 4K gaming, with the PS4 Slim and Xbox One S are a much better value for gamers with HD TVs. Microsoft has the lead in the 4K gaming sphere with the powerful Xbox One X - a system that's capable of playing games in native 4K resolution. The PS4 Pro, on the other hand, is only capable of upscaling games to 4K but has the advantage of having a stronger stable of first-party exclusive games. The PS4 vs Xbox One comparison all starts with the price and bundles. PS4 vs Xbox One price comparison. The PS4 and Xbox One prices seem to change by the week, with price drops and bundle deals coming and going faster than handheld PlayStation systems. While all these bundles are great for consumers, it can be hard to keep up with the latest pricing info. So, in an effort to cut through the noise, here are the latest prices and bundles for each console. The Xbox One X is clearly the newest console with few discount available, while the PS4 Pro is now a year old, as of this month. It's seeing more discounts and gives you a bit more power than the PS4 Slim while still staying at a reasonable price. If you want to dial back the cost of either console, check out the latest prices for the Xbox One S and PS4 Slim. Additional reading. Want to compare the slim consoles? Check out our guide to the PS4 Slim vs the Xbox One S. Want to compare 4K apples-to-4K apples? Our PS4 Pro vs Xbox One X guide will give you just that. Look, we can sit here and mete out the differences between each iteration of the consoles, but we really don’t want to be here all day – so, instead we’re going to compare the entire ecosystem of each platform. If you want to really look into the fine details, we have you covered below. Don’t worry. And, don’t forget that Black Friday is coming soon, which you can bet will entail lots of deals on both consoles. PS4 vs Xbox One sales. Both Sony and Microsoft have approached this generation completely differently – with Sony focusing entirely on games, and Microsoft focusing more on having the Xbox One as more of an all-around home theater device. Sony took an early lead this generation, and has currently sold an astounding 70 million PS4s over the last 4 years – more than doubling Microsoft’s 30 million sales. A pretty big part of the reason that Sony dominated Microsoft was that focus that we mentioned earlier. They put all of their attention on building a great game library – and it’s paid off. Don’t write Microsoft off though, 30 million units is nothing to shake your head at, and with the recent release of the Xbox One X, they stand a pretty good chance of closing a bit of that gap. Hardware Versions and Design. Both consoles are available in two different versions, one budget and one premium The PS4 has a slim version and a 4K PS4 Pro The Xbox has the Xbox One S and Xbox One X. Both the Xbox One and the PS4 have two separate hardware versions that you can buy right now. This is different than in the past, when each console existed on its own, and lasted an entire generation. The Xbox One S improved on the design of the original Xbox One by cutting down a lot of the heft, and removing the gigantic power brick – instead opting for an internal power supply. It measures at just 11.6 x 8.9 x 2.5 inches and unlike the previous version includes a 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray player and can even upscale 1080p games to 4K, as long as you have a TV that can support it. The Xbox One X might be heftier than the Xbox One S, but it’s still considerably smaller than the original Xbox One, measuring in at 11.81 x 9.44 x 2.36 inches and weighing around 8.4 lbs and also opted for an internal power supply. This is the high-powered version of the Xbox One, that allows for native 4K gaming and, much like the Xbox One S, includes a 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray player, something that not even the PS4 Pro can boast. Our guide to the Xbox One X vs Xbox One S vs Xbox One will clue you in as to the differences in the Xbox family. Then starting out the PS4 side of the equation, the PS4 Slim is straight up the smallest of the major consoles available right now, measuring in at 10.4 x 11.3 x 1.5 inches and serving as the baseline PS4 for most consumers, serving as a complete replacement for the original PS4. It doesn’t allow for even 4K video playback, but it can still play the entire killer PS4 game library. The PS4 was the original 4K console, coming out an entire year before the Xbox One X – even if the ‘X’ eventually outpowered it. It measures in at 12.8 x 11.6 x 2.1 inches. While the PS4 Pro does to at least some extent support native 4K gaming, it doesn’t include a 4K Ultra-HD Blu-Ray Player, an omission that has caught Sony some flak over the last year or so. Our guide to the PS4 Slim vs PS4 Pro outlines the differences between the consoles in more detail. Xbox One vs PS4 connectivity. You can't upgrade Xbox One's internal hard drive, but you can on the PS4. Both consoles support the use of external hard drives. The Xbox One has more ports on its rear. Depending on how your gaming setup is organised, the connectivity of your console could be an extremely important detail. Both the Xbox One S and X have identical ports, each including two HDMI ports, one for receiving an input from a cable or satellite box, and one that inputs to your TV. On top of those, they’ve each got two USB 3 ports, IR outputs, optical audio out, Ethernet ports and, of course, the power cable – which is compatible with both versions of the Xbox. However, due to the quick and tragic downfall of Kinect, if you want to use a Kinect with either version of the Xbox One you’ll have to go out and get an adapter. The PS4 Pro and PS4 Slim have similar inputs, although they are slightly different. Each has a single HDMI out, a single USB port in the back (two in the front), an Ethernet port, and power. The only difference between the Pro and the Slim is that the Pro has an Optical Audio out, while the Slim drops it. One of the most compelling things about the connectivity of the PS4, however, is that both versions allow users to swap out the internal hard drive with one of their choice. All versions of both the Xbox One and PS4 support 802.11 ac Wi-Fi and gigabit Ethernet. So no matter which console you decide on, you won’t have to worry about network compatibility. PS4 and Xbox One are void of remarkable characteristics on the front. There's a Blu-ray/DVD combo drive to the left (which can play Ultra HD Blu-rays on the Xbox One S and Xbox One X) and their respective, muted-color logos to the right. PS4 has a pair of USB ports tucked between its sandwich-like halves next to where the disc drive is located. The best PS4 prices and bundles.
