Xbox One S vs PS4 Slim: which delivers the most? We don’t know who’s copying who, but Xbox One and PlayStation 4 seem to be following very similar paths. Both have new powered-up iterations coming in the shape of Xbox One Scorpio and PS4 Neo. And both have slim versions out this autumn: Xbox One S, and the new slim PS4. But these new consoles aren’t carbon copies of one another. If you’re still deciding whether to buy an Xbox One S or a slim PS4, you’ll want to know which new features have been added – or missed out – on each. So that’s exactly what we’ve done in this post. Here’s our head-to-head match-up of the ‘S’ and the ‘slim’. Size comparison: slim PS4 wins. The most noticeable difference in these new console revisions is their smaller size. This mainly benefits Microsoft and Sony by reducing their costs. It also means these new consoles will take up less space under your telly. So which is smaller? Here are the dimensions: Original Xbox One : 333 x 274 x 79 mm (biggest) Xbox One S : 296 x 231 x 65 mm (around 38% smaller than OG) Original PS4 : 275 x 305 x 53 mm (about the same as Xbox One S) Slim PS4 : 264 x 288 x 39 mm (smallest, around 33% smaller than OG) The slim PS4 is the clear winner here. Not only is it a third smaller than the old PS4, it’s also smaller than Xbox One S by a similar margin. Power: Small bump for Xbox One S. Xbox One S does offer small improvements to the frame rates of some games, thanks to a faster GPU clock speed. Microsoft itself describes these as “pretty minor”. We don’t know yet if the slim PS4 does the same, since it hasn’t been officially revealed yet. But if you want a real power boost for your Xbox One and PS4 games, wait for Scorpio and Neo. 4K video: Xbox One S has it, slim PS4 doesn’t. One of the best features of Xbox One S is playback of 4K Ultra-HD video, including 4K Blu-ray discs and streaming content. The new console can also upscale HD content to 4K. (You’ll need a 4K telly of course). The new slim PS4 sadly has none of this. Maybe Neo will. New controllers all round. Both new consoles come with newly improved controllers in the box. The new Xbox controller is a beautifully sleek update, made from better quality parts. It also adds longer signal range and new Bluetooth connectivity, so you can use it on PC and other devices. The new DualShock 4 for PlayStation looks very similar to the old one, but it adds a wired USB connection for reduced lag and the lightbar is now visible on the front. Cut connectors: Xbox Kinect and PS4 optical audio. It’s not all new additions, however. Both new consoles remove fairly significant hardware features that were in the original systems. On Xbox One S, it’s the Kinect port. Maybe few people will care, but you’ll need an adapter if you want to use Kinect with the S. On slim PS4, optical audio out has gone. Which are you buying? In terms of improvements over their original versions , we think Xbox One S slightly edges the slim PS4 thanks to its 4K video playback and smart new controller. The PS4 Pro is a different beast when compared to the Xbox One S. Its internal components are a big improvement over the original model, as you can see in the above spec list. The newly implemented Boost Mode also allows players to gain extra benefits such as higher framerates across significantly more games, even those lacking a PS4 Pro-specific patch. PS4 Pro vs Xbox One S – Dimensions. The PS4 Pro is quite a bit wider than the Xbox One S, measuring in at 295 x 327 x 55mm where the One S is 229 x 292 x 63.5mm. It’s also longer, but ever so slightly thinner. PS4 Pro vs Xbox One S – Resolution and HDR gaming. Both the PS4 Pro and Xbox One S support HDR (High Dynamic Range). For more on this colourful new feature you can check out our HDR article. The standard PS4 and PS4 Slim also now supports HDR thanks to a post-launch patch. The core difference here isn’t HDR, but instead resolution: the PS4 Pro has the ability to output games at a resolution higher than Full HD. Since release we have seen certain titles render at a native 4K resolution while others settle for an upscaled alternative. Whatever the elevated resolution is then be upscaled to 4K. If you’re playing in Full HD, you’ll end up with smoother anti-aliasing, meaning the divisions between objects on screen will be much smoother than on the regular PS4. Many of the PS4 Pro supported titles use a 4K “checkerboard” rendering technique that subsequently improves textures and specular effects, making for a cleaner, crisper overall image without putting out a native 4K resolution. Developers are also free to take advantage of the additional power of the Pro however they see fit. In the instance of the recent, excellent Nioh, players were given the choice whether to play the game with a higher resolution or framerate with multiple settings, much like PC players enjoy. The Xbox One S only upscales games to 4K with no enhancements aside from HDR, as mentioned above. PS4 Pro vs Xbox One S – Boost Mode vs Ultra HD Blu-Ray. Features-wise, the two are very similar, but there’s one key differentiator that gives the Xbox One S a massive boost, and that’s its Ultra HD Blu-ray player. Incredibly, despite owning the UHD Blu-ray standard, Sony has chosen not to include the technology in its flagship console. 4K streaming is supported on YouTube and Netflix for both consoles, with more services on the way. When it first launched the PS4 Pro was only capable of improving visuals and performance on titles officially patched by developers. However, this all changed with the arrival of Boost Mode, a new feature introduced in the PS4’s 4.50 firmware update. When activated from the settings menu, this feature will improve performance of all PS4 titles, regardless if they’ve been patched or not. Of course, the results are mixed. PS4 Pro vs Xbox One S – What games can I play on it? Both the PS4 Pro and Xbox One S support all existing games, whether they be physical or digital. Those wishing to upgrade don’t need to worry about re-purchasing their entire library. In terms of games with visual benefits, specific games have been upgraded for both systems to support HDR content, with PS4 Pro being the only one to benefit from higher resolutions at the time of writing. We’ve compiled some specific games for each system below, including some of the things you can expect. Resident Evil 7 – Capcom’s latest survival horror masterpiece benefits hugely from HDR. The virtual reality experience is also enhanced by PS4 Pro with enhanced visuals on PlayStation VR. The Last Guardian – Having launched with support for 4K and 1080p performance modes, Team Ico’s latest effort is a sight to behold. HDR is also supported on the standard PS4. The Last of Us Remastered – Naughty Dog’s modern classic is a great showpiece for HDR. It also supports 4K at 60fps, which is nothing to sniff at. Hitman – HDR support is absent, although both performance and textures are boosted on PS4 Pro. Rise of the Tomb Raider – One of the shining examples of PS4 Pro upgrades. Crystal Dynamics has implemented visual improvements in both 4K and 1080p for Pro owners. Battlefield 1 – The framerate across epic multiplayer battles receives a huge boost thanks to PS4 Pro, helped further by additional terrain detail on each map. Gears of War 4 – Acting as the pioneering example of HDR on Xbox One S, Gears of War 4 was the first of a few select titles to support the feature. Forza Horizon 3 – Heralded as one of 2016’s best racers, Horizon 3 looks even better with a healthy dose of HDR on Xbox One S. Final Fantasy 15 – It turns out HDR is just what Noctis and friends needed, adding an extra helping of colour to the JRPG’s gorgeous open world. It’s clear Microsoft has focused on delivering 4K video content, while Sony has tried its best to produce a more powerful console designed with gaming in mind. The upcoming Boost Mode feature is bound to sway a lot of consumers looking for a genuine difference between the Pro and original PS4. Which of these consoles is best for you can differ depending on your love for fancy visuals, top notch games or 4K video content. If you haven’t found yourself wishing for higher framerates and crisper visuals on your current console than upgrading might not be the right choice, especially if you’re yet to invest in a 4K display. If most of your friends are playing Xbox games online, get an Xbox One S and join them. If they have PS4s, go get yourself a PS4 Slim. Even if you don’t see yourself gaming online, get the console your friends have. Why? Because you can borrow games! As a casual gamer, the cost of buying games seems crazy. New AAA titles cost upwards of $50 at launch. Seriously, five games will be the cost of the console you just bought. If you don’t care about getting a game on the first day and are happy to wait, then get the console that your friends have and share your games library. Sure, there’s the addition of HDR and 4K blu-ray support, but you’ll need an impressive 4KTV to make any use of these features. If you don’t already own one, though, it’s definitely worth considering a purchase. However, with Xbox One X out now, it makes things a little more complicated. TrustedReviews has broken down everything you need to know about the two consoles below, for anybody considering picking it up. Xbox One S Price: How much should you pay? With the Xbox One now discontinued and Microsoft continuing with the two main consoles of One S and One X, the One S has become significantly cheaper. Bundles are available for as littles as £200, which could go lower in sales. Xbox One S is 40% smaller with built-in power supply. The Xbox One S is 40% smaller than the original – a considerable reduction. Given that the original Xbox One is a chunky machine – at 333mm x 276mm x 78mm, it dominates the comparatively slight PS4 – this is an important change. However, PS4 Slim gives Xbox One S a run for its money in terms of sheer dimensions. Plus the power supply is now built-in. So, 40% smaller and no bulky power supply? That’s a pretty big tick in favour of the Xbox One S. 4K Ultra HD, 4K Blu-ray and High Dynamic Range support. Arguably the standout feature for Xbox One S. Not only does the Xbox One S support 4K video playback from streaming services like Netflix and Amazon, it’s also a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player. This makes the $299/£249 starting price excellent value compared to dedicated Ultra HD players currently available. Our testing suggests the Xbox One S is a more than competent Ultra HD Blu-ray player, so AV fans should hold no fears in that regard. While the original Xbox One is technically capable of supporting 4K gaming and video, it has an HDMI 1.4a port, meaning it can only output 4K at 30Hz, which is very limiting. Xbox One S has a slight performance bump. Much like PS4 Pro, the Xbox One S is not the beginning of a new console generation, but an expansion of a platform we already know and love. But it does offer a very slight improvement over its predecessor. The Coalition head Rod Fergusson revealed to Polygon that his team had taken advantage of additional raw GPU and CPU power for Gears of War 4 , to improve frame rates. Ferguson claimed his engineers have been able to, as Polygon puts it, “leverage the additional power to reduce the frequency of the frame rate or resolution penalties.” A Microsoft spokesperson then confirmed, via The Verge, “We have the same SoC architecture as Xbox One today. “For games that want to take advantage of HDR, we gave developers access to a small amount of additional processing power.” Overall though, don’t expect games to look noticeably different on Xbox One S to Xbox One thanks to the additional power, instead only getting minor stability improvements. Xbox One S can upscale games to 4K. The upscaling capabilities of the Xbox One S were revealed by Jeff Henshaw, Group Program Manager at Xbox at an E3 session . Henshaw said: “It’s not native 4K, but the Xbox One S can upscale games from 1080p to 4K.” It means the Xbox One S will be able to offer gaming at a higher resolution than its predecessor, although it won’t quite be as good as native 4K. In our review, we found the Xbox One S is good at upscaling games and 4K video content – better than the TV we tested on. It can be stored upright. That’s great news, though the stand is an optional extra, unless you buy the 2TB model, which includes a stand. There’s no dedicated Kinect port. Not a huge surprise, given its increasing irrelevance, though owners who want to use Kinect can do say via a USB adapter. The adapter is sold seperately and can be ordered directly from Microsoft. Don’t expect any new Kinect games on the horizon, though. But there is an IR blaster. In the place of a dedicated Kinect port, the Xbox One S comes with an integrated IR (infrared) blaster. That means you can configure your Xbox One S to turn on other devices, like your TV, audio/video receiver, and cable or satellite receiver. The idea is that you can reduce the number of remotes you need to control your stuff. New controller adds Bluetooth. Not content with the already excellent Xbox One controller, or the incredible Xbox One Elite Controller, Microsoft’s unveiled the Xbox One S controller as well. The pad has a new textured grip, exchangeable colour covers, extended range and – most importantly – now has Bluetooth so you can use it with a PC wirelessly. Xbox One S vs Xbox One: Should you upgrade? There’s no doubt the new Xbox One S is a better all around console than its predecessor. Not only does it slim down the original console’s bulky frame, the Xbox One S comes with a load of features that make a far more desirable device. Firstly, you get a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player. Currently, those things will cost you upwards of £400 on their own. Secondly, you can stream 4K at the proper 60 Hz in HDR from apps such as Netflix and Amazon Prime Instant Video. Plus, there’s even a slight performance boost. The console benefits from extra processing power, too. It probably isn’t worth it for most Xbox One owners if you don’t care about 4K video, but it looks like a good upgrade if you fancy getting into Ultra HD Blu-ray. And if you don’t already own an Xbox One, the smaller size and great features make it very tempting indeed. But what about Xbox One X? While at the tail end of 2016 the choice between the two consoles seemed like a no-brainer, as we move closer the the supposed “holiday 2017” launch date of the Xbox One X, the proposition becomes even trickier. There’s still so much we don’t know about Microsoft’s all-powerful machine – most importantly, how much it will cost – but the fact this unit will represent a significant upgrade over anything that has come before it means that the idea of buying an Xbox One as a first-time buyer now becomes a bit of a tough sell. The age old argument of Playstation vs. Xbox is once again brought up, and this time it is between the Playstation 4 Slim and the Xbox One S. Both are the smaller and sleeker versions of their original current generation counterparts, and while both boast great features, you should definitely get the PS4 Slim, and here's why. According to Gaming Bolt , the new Playstation 4 Slim beats the Xbox One S in terms of power. Microsoft has failed to improve on the Xbox One S, albeit being smaller, and it still has the same hardware problems that the Xbox One did with specs and power. If you're going to spend some cash, you might as well spend it on a stronger device, such as the PS4 Slim. It's no secret that Sony has the better game exclusives, which will only be playable if you have a Playstation. Sure Microsoft has their own line of great games for the Xbox, but those can't compare to the likes of "God of War," "inFamous," "Uncharted," "The Last of Us," and "Bloodborne." Another reason to get a Playstation 4 Slim over the Xbox One S, is the fact that Playstation has a better reach on Japanese titles. If you're a fan of Japanese games, Sony is the only way to go, and while the Xbox is on its way, the Playstation is already light years ahead in releasing great games from the Land of the Rising Sun. Also, Sony is now on the market for virtual reality with the Playstation VR, and if you're a console gamer who wants to experience a world of virtual reality gaming, the Playstation 4 Slim is your only option. Lastly, the Playstation 4 Slim, is really really small, and despite the face that the Xbox One S is the better looking console, it still takes up a bit of space. Well, wonder no longer - here are the key features and specs for the PS4 Pro, PS4 Slim and Xbox One S. PlayStation 4 Pro. Previous thought to be called the PS4 Neo, the PS4 Pro is Sony's upgraded PlayStation 4 - a PlayStation 4.5, if you like. The big news is it's got double the GPU power, which means it can drive games at 4K resolution, which should look very smart on your latest television. The size of the internal hard drive has also been upped to 1TB. Sony is keen to emphasise this is still part of the same console 'generation' though, and says it will play all existing PS4 titles. You'll also be able to transfer all your data from your vanilla PS4 onto the Pro (although this won't include certain discontinued titles such as the PT demo. Sad face). While we had plenty of doubts at the thought of a new version of PS4 halfway through its console cycle, Sony has dispelled every one of them. With the combination of 4K, 2160p resolution and HDR, PS4 Pro is more than just the most powerful games console you can buy today - it's a must for anyone with a 4K TV. On the downside, it can't play Ultra HD Blu-rays (a issue the Xbox One S certainly doesn't have), which is a shame if you wanted this as the centre of your entertainment universe. It's also a little too bulky in size, but these are small concessions considering the upgrade PS4 Pro represents. Like the Xbox One S, High Dynamic Range (HDR) support will give colours a more natural and balanced look on PS4 Pro, but if you're still a vanilla PS4 there's no need to feel left out as Sony confirmed HDR is coming to all PS4 models via a software update in the near future. Not every game has a 'PS4 Pro mode', but Sony says most games coming from here on out will support an upgraded version. This Christmas most of the big new titles will be PS4 Pro ready, including Watch Dogs 2, Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare and FIFA 17. Some existing PS4 games will be patched to support a PS4 Pro mode, including The Last of Us and Uncharted 4: A Thief's End. The PlayStation 4 Pro will cost £349 or $399 and is available now. Xbox One S. Microsoft's new Xbox console, which has been with us for a month, is smaller, more powerful, and. whiter. As well as looking less chunky and less ugly than the Xbox One, it's also been upgraded to be capable of playing 4K video and Ultra HD Blu-rays. The other main upgrade is the option of a 2TB hard drive. In terms of games performance, though, there's only a fractional upgrade games can't run at native 4K resolution, though they can be upscaled and support High Dynamic Range (HDR) for better, deeper colours. That means the Xbox One S sits somewhere between the PS4 Pro and the PS4 Slim, with its smaller size and very slight performance upgrades. The new box measures 333mm x 276mm x 78mm and supports HDMI 2.0a output (4K video running at a 60Hz refresh rate). It's undoubtedly worth buying over the original Xbox One but lovers of Microsoft's console might want to wait for the Xbox Scorpio, due out next year - it's slated to have upgrades that are more than just superficial, and is rumoured to be even more powerful than PS4 Pro. Prices for the Xbox One S start at £249.99 or $299, and it's available now. PlayStation 4 Slim. The PlayStation 4 Slim is Sony's answer to the Xbox One S: a more compact, leaner version of the original console that keeps mostly the same hardware (just like the PS3 Slim before it). However, unlike Microsoft, Sony hasn't boosted the console's actual features this time. That means no 4K streaming or gaming support - for that you're going to have to opt for the PS4 Pro. Obviously Sony wants this to replace the original PlayStation 4, offering new console buyers the same technology inside a smaller, more aesthetically pleasing box. Indeed, in Sony's press event, it simply referred to the new box as the PS4, so this is the new baseline model it would seem. "There's never been a better time" to join the PS4 community, according to Sony's Andrew House, who introduced the console on stage. The PS4 Slim (or just plain old PS4) measures 288mm x 264mm x 39mm but for the rest of the specs you can refer to our original PlayStation 4 review.
