Xbox One System Update. I wanted to let you know that later today a required Xbox One system update will become available. This update works a little bit differently than what fans are used to on Xbox 360. Here’s what you can expect: A. If you are using the Xbox One “Instant On” (the low power state that allows you to instantly power up your console by saying “Xbox On”), your console automatically checks for updates when you turn it off. Once we make the update available (on Tuesday, December 10th, 5:00 PM PT ) this means the following will happen: Your console will automatically download the update after you turn it off. Once the update has been downloaded in the background, your console will power completely down. Please note: You will need to manually power your console back on after the update has been downloaded. Because the update will power your console completely down, the “Xbox On” voice command won’t be available until after the update is fully installed. When you turn the console on you’ll see the update being applied. After that, your Xbox One will reboot. You’ll know the update is installing when you see the Xbox logo on the green background (like at the top of this post.) This can take anywhere from 2-5 minutes. Once the update has finished installing, you’ll boot to the Home screen and you’re all set. Don’t worry, if you are out of town for the holidays, you console also does regular checks for updates and will download it in the background even if you have not used you Xbox One in a couple of days. B. If you are not using the Xbox One “Instant On” feature, you will be required to download and apply this update after Thursday, December 12th at 2:00 AM PT . This update addresses the following: Addresses SmartGlass issues for some users when coming in and out of connected standby Addresses multiplayer issues for some users when re-joining games Addresses issues with inconsistent notifications for some users Addresses dashboard performance for some users Offers improvements for Xbox One’s TV, system update, and content update services for scaling over time Updated wireless networking driver to improve connectivity issues for some users. We’ve got quite a few updates planned for the next year based on the community feedback we’ve been seeing, and I’ll have details on those in the future. Thanks and I’ll see you online. Update: Here is the official support document if you have questions that are not answered here. Call me crazy, but shouldn’t we be TOLD that we are getting an update installed? When this update started, I thought my X1 was frozen and I came close to performing a hard shutdown. Luckily, my phone rang and I was distracted. I came back to see the X1 at the home screen. Instead of just the green Xbox One screen, a few characters of text stating that an update was downloading and is currently being installed would prevent users from performing hard shutdowns, taking their negative (and founded) comments to the forums, etc. It’s quite a simple formula and bit odd that this hasn’t already been implemented. The only (well, only one for now) thing I can think of that would prevent Microsoft from applying text to the X1 green screen is people thinking “Oh man! More updates. ” Similar to Microsoft Windows Operating Systems when they receive updates. Regardless, it’s not an excuse for poor communication to the end-user. Period. On a positive note, one of the first things I noticed was the improvement while navigating the home screen if something else is already running. I.E. Game, Netflix, etc. The “stuttering” or low frame rate issue when trying to simply navigate (left, right, up, down) is gone and is now up to par. It’s unfortunate this basic issue wasn’t addressed as part of the initial release. Many family and friends with the X1 ended up returning or exchanging their units thinking there was something wrong. Like I said – Communicate to the end-user. The Latest Recently on Major Nelson. Gravel Is Now Available For Digital Pre-order And Pre-download On Xbox One. Wulverblade Is Now Available For Xbox One. There's some big new features in the new Xbox One update. Last updated by Oscar Dayus on June 2, 2017 at 3:04AM. You are now subscribed. Xbox One's latest system update is available to download now for Insider members, and there's some cool new features included. According to Dualshockers, the patch adds the ability to invite friends to join in and broadcast alongside you in Microsoft's rebranded livestreaming app, Mixer. Microsoft does note, however, that until the feature is rolled out more widely, it's currently only available to Alpha Insiders, and not Beta members. You'll also need an Xbox Live Gold subscription to invite a friend to broadcast with you in your Party. In addition, the new update lets you link a specific Microsoft account to a particular controller, meaning that next time you turn on your Xbox One, your favourite pad will sign you in immediately. This could be useful if, for example, you share your Xbox One with someone else and you each have a preferred controller. Lastly, the latest Preview update fixes a bunch of minor bugs. Check out the full patch notes at the bottom of this article, via Dualshockers. Just last week, Microsoft launched its new Netflix-style Game Pass service. Game Pass is a subscription-based service that allows users to play games from a library of select titles as much as they want. It's a separate service from Xbox Live Gold and costs $10/£8 per month, with no long-term subscription option available. Check out our list of all the Xbox Game Pass titles here. Adult accounts can disable this feature by navigating to Settings > Account > Sign-in, security & passkey. Co-streaming. You can now invite a friend to combine their game broadcast with yours! Sign in with an account that has an Xbox Live Gold subscription and invite a friend to your party. Once you've begun broadcasting your game from the Guide, you'll be able to select "Invite party to co-stream" from the Party tab. Co-streaming is currently available only to Alpha Insiders, so we'd suggest using the Insider forums to sync up with other Alpha Insiders to test out this feature. Learn more about co-streaming and other features new to Mixer here, and be sure to complete the "Invite to Co-Stream" Quest and Survey in the Xbox Insiders Hub to provide your feedback! Controller Linking. Signing into your Xbox account can now be done with a click of the Xbox button thanks to the new controller linking feature! You can now link an account to a specific controller by opening the Guide, navigating to Settings > Account > Sign-in, security & passkey and selecting the "This controller signs in…" option followed by "Link controller." From there, test the feature out for yourself by signing out of your account and then turning your controller off and then back on. In Settings, go to Kinect and devices > Devices and accessories . Then select Device info > Turn on Copilot , and choose the copilot’s controller. Both controllers now control the game together. The new achievement tracker lets you keep an eye on your favorite achievements and play at the same time. Move it anywhere on the screen, it’s your call. You also control the number of achievements shown and the transparency level – display it prominently or fade it in to the background. Press the Xbox button and go to Achievements to turn the tracker on. Now you can set reminders on your Xbox One so you don’t miss any gaming opportunities. Reminders show up wherever you use Cortana – PC, phone, or Xbox. Cortana also supports more party controls. Say “Hey Cortana, invite party to game” to add partygoers without having to pause your game. We’ve made it even easier to make game clips: just press the Xbox button . From there, your controller’s Y button grabs a screenshot, the X button saves the last 30 seconds, and the View button shows the Game DVR options you know and love, from starting a recording to saving the last 5 minutes of play. Xbox One. You can update an offline Xbox One with a USB drive (update: instructions removed) Xbox One owners will be able to perform an offline update on consoles with a USB flash drive and a PC with an internet connection and USB Port, according to the Xbox One support page. The emergency offline update is intended for users having trouble downloading the system update from Xbox Live. In order to download the update offline, users will first need to know what OS their system is running. Users can then download the update on a flash drive from their PC, and transfer the files to their Xbox One. The flash drive will require at least 2 GB of space and must be formatted correctly. Before installing the update on the Xbox One, users will need to unplug the network cable, power off the console and unplug the power cord. After powering back up — if done correctly — the system will issue two "power-up" tones. "The first power-up tone will occur approximately 10 seconds after powering up," the post reads. "This indicates that a USB update has been detected. The second power-up tone indicates that the update file has been copied and mounted. This is important, as it confirms you have a compatible Xbox One system update based on your current build. This informs the system which build is currently installed on the console, and whether the update is compatible with that build." The console will need to restart and may take several minutes to power back up. Step-by-step instructions are available on the support page. Xbox One requires a launch-day patch before users can begin using the console. The patch is not tied to enabling offline functionality. Update: The support page explaining how the offline update process works has been taken down. We've contacted Microsoft to find out why these instructions, and their associated download links, have been removed. Microsoft to update Xbox One consoles with Windows 10 core in November. Microsoft will take another step toward 'One Windows' in November when it updates the Windows 8-based Xbox One operating system with a Windows 10 core. Microsoft will be taking another step toward fleshing out the company's Universal Windows app strategy this November when the company updates Xbox One gaming consoles with the Windows 10 Core. Microsoft officials confirmed the planned November 2015 timing during a keynote at the Gamescom 2015 show on August 4. The Windows team's goal is to have a preview of the new Windows 10-powered OS and dashboard available to Xbox Preview members this September. Currently, Xbox One consoles run on an operating system that includes the Windows 8 core. The Xbox One OS includes a host OS, which is a heavily modified Hyper-V hypervisor and two partitions. The "Exclusive" partition is a custom virtual machine (VM) for games; the "Shared" partition is a custom VM for running multiple apps. The Shared Partition is currently running the Windows 8 Core. Microsoft is planning to upgrade that Windows 8 Core to a Windows 10 one in November via a regular Xbox One update. November also seems to be the time frame for Microsoft to deliver the emulator (presumably requiring Windows 10) that will enable Xbox One consoles to run many Xbox 360 games. Update : As a few readers on Twitter have pointed out, the backward compatibility enabling 360 games on Xbox One is in preview already, so not tied to the arrival of the Windows 10 Core on Xbox One. One obvious reason Microsoft is planning to move to 10 on Xbox is to make it easier and cheaper for the company's Windows team to develop, update and maintain the operating system. Microsoft has been moving gradually toward its long-promised goal of running "One Windows" across all of its different devices. The other reason Microsoft wants OneCore, One Store, one runtime, one increasingly common set of programming interfaces and dev tools across Windows PCs, tablets, phones, Surface Hub conferencing systems, Xbox gaming consoles, IoT devices and new devices like the HoloLens is to try to get more developers to write Universal Windows apps. By making it so developers can write a single app core for Windows 10 which will be adaptable -- in theory with relatively little developer intervention -- across any/all these device types, Microsoft is hoping the coming Windows 10 tide will raise all boats. Microsoft is betting that developers who are interested in building apps for one type of Windows device might be swayed to build for additional device types if the company makes it easy enough to reuse code. Although Microsoft is moving back to its software/services and business roots these days, gaming is still important to the company for several reasons. Microsoft management believes without a strong game line up on its devices, Microsoft won't have a chance to try to gain relevance in the mobile world. For a non-gamer like me, it's hard to believe that the biggest "digital life" (not "work") category of apps, measured in both time and money spent, is games. But Microsoft officials claim the data shows this. This is the biggest reason Microsoft bought Minecraft; it's the top-grossing paid app on both iOS and Android. Microsoft CEO talks about his thinking around product differentiation and being ahead of the curve in this Q&A with Microsoft watcher Mary Jo Foley. Microsoft management also is looking to games as key to new monetization opportunities for the company -- not just on gaming consoles or phones, but on PCs, too. Microsoft brass have said they think having having tightly integrated search (Cortana and Bing), a new unified store (with plenty of games) and gaming built directly into the Windows experience are all "new monetization opportunities, once a PC is sold." It's worth remembering that Xbox, to Microsoft, is a lot more than just a gaming console. It's first and foremost a brand. "Xbox is Microsoft's premier entertainment brand for the TV, phone, PC and tablet," the company spells out plainly in its press materials.
