Xbox One S vs Xbox One: Time to upgrade? Xbox One S vs Xbox One: Is it worth buying either console with Xbox One X now the most powerful console on the market? TrustedReviews has collected everything you need to know. Xbox One S isn’t a significant upgrade over the Xbox One, but does provide some cool benefits. Owners now have access to HDR support and a 4K blu-ray player, something PS4 Pro sorely left out. To put things simply, if you already own the original console there isn’t much incentive to upgrade. Sure, there’s the addition of HDR and 4K blu-ray support, but you’ll need an impressive 4KTV to make any use of these features. If you don’t already own one, though, it’s definitely worth considering a purchase. However, with Xbox One X out now, it makes things a little more complicated. TrustedReviews has broken down everything you need to know about the two consoles below, for anybody considering picking it up. Xbox One S Price: How much should you pay? With the Xbox One now discontinued and Microsoft continuing with the two main consoles of One S and One X, the One S has become significantly cheaper. Bundles are available for as littles as £200, which could go lower in sales. Xbox One S is 40% smaller with built-in power supply. The Xbox One S is 40% smaller than the original – a considerable reduction. Given that the original Xbox One is a chunky machine – at 333mm x 276mm x 78mm, it dominates the comparatively slight PS4 – this is an important change. However, PS4 Slim gives Xbox One S a run for its money in terms of sheer dimensions. Plus the power supply is now built-in. So, 40% smaller and no bulky power supply? That’s a pretty big tick in favour of the Xbox One S. 4K Ultra HD, 4K Blu-ray and High Dynamic Range support. Arguably the standout feature for Xbox One S. Not only does the Xbox One S support 4K video playback from streaming services like Netflix and Amazon, it’s also a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player. This makes the $299/£249 starting price excellent value compared to dedicated Ultra HD players currently available. Our testing suggests the Xbox One S is a more than competent Ultra HD Blu-ray player, so AV fans should hold no fears in that regard. While the original Xbox One is technically capable of supporting 4K gaming and video, it has an HDMI 1.4a port, meaning it can only output 4K at 30Hz, which is very limiting. Xbox One S has a slight performance bump. Much like PS4 Pro, the Xbox One S is not the beginning of a new console generation, but an expansion of a platform we already know and love. But it does offer a very slight improvement over its predecessor. The Coalition head Rod Fergusson revealed to Polygon that his team had taken advantage of additional raw GPU and CPU power for Gears of War 4 , to improve frame rates. Ferguson claimed his engineers have been able to, as Polygon puts it, “leverage the additional power to reduce the frequency of the frame rate or resolution penalties.” A Microsoft spokesperson then confirmed, via The Verge, “We have the same SoC architecture as Xbox One today. “For games that want to take advantage of HDR, we gave developers access to a small amount of additional processing power.” Overall though, don’t expect games to look noticeably different on Xbox One S to Xbox One thanks to the additional power, instead only getting minor stability improvements. Xbox One S can upscale games to 4K. The upscaling capabilities of the Xbox One S were revealed by Jeff Henshaw, Group Program Manager at Xbox at an E3 session . Henshaw said: “It’s not native 4K, but the Xbox One S can upscale games from 1080p to 4K.” It means the Xbox One S will be able to offer gaming at a higher resolution than its predecessor, although it won’t quite be as good as native 4K. In our review, we found the Xbox One S is good at upscaling games and 4K video content – better than the TV we tested on. It can be stored upright. That’s great news, though the stand is an optional extra, unless you buy the 2TB model, which includes a stand. There’s no dedicated Kinect port. Not a huge surprise, given its increasing irrelevance, though owners who want to use Kinect can do say via a USB adapter. The adapter is sold seperately and can be ordered directly from Microsoft. Don’t expect any new Kinect games on the horizon, though. But there is an IR blaster. In the place of a dedicated Kinect port, the Xbox One S comes with an integrated IR (infrared) blaster. That means you can configure your Xbox One S to turn on other devices, like your TV, audio/video receiver, and cable or satellite receiver. The idea is that you can reduce the number of remotes you need to control your stuff. New controller adds Bluetooth. Not content with the already excellent Xbox One controller, or the incredible Xbox One Elite Controller, Microsoft’s unveiled the Xbox One S controller as well. The pad has a new textured grip, exchangeable colour covers, extended range and – most importantly – now has Bluetooth so you can use it with a PC wirelessly. Xbox One S vs Xbox One: Should you upgrade? There’s no doubt the new Xbox One S is a better all around console than its predecessor. Not only does it slim down the original console’s bulky frame, the Xbox One S comes with a load of features that make a far more desirable device. Firstly, you get a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player. Currently, those things will cost you upwards of £400 on their own. Secondly, you can stream 4K at the proper 60 Hz in HDR from apps such as Netflix and Amazon Prime Instant Video. Plus, there’s even a slight performance boost. The console benefits from extra processing power, too. It probably isn’t worth it for most Xbox One owners if you don’t care about 4K video, but it looks like a good upgrade if you fancy getting into Ultra HD Blu-ray. And if you don’t already own an Xbox One, the smaller size and great features make it very tempting indeed. But what about Xbox One X? While at the tail end of 2016 the choice between the two consoles seemed like a no-brainer, as we move closer the the supposed “holiday 2017” launch date of the Xbox One X, the proposition becomes even trickier. There’s still so much we don’t know about Microsoft’s all-powerful machine – most importantly, how much it will cost – but the fact this unit will represent a significant upgrade over anything that has come before it means that the idea of buying an Xbox One as a first-time buyer now becomes a bit of a tough sell. The newly implemented Boost Mode also allows players to gain extra benefits such as higher framerates across significantly more games, even those lacking a PS4 Pro-specific patch. PS4 Pro vs Xbox One S – Dimensions. The PS4 Pro is quite a bit wider than the Xbox One S, measuring in at 295 x 327 x 55mm where the One S is 229 x 292 x 63.5mm. It’s also longer, but ever so slightly thinner. PS4 Pro vs Xbox One S – Resolution and HDR gaming. Both the PS4 Pro and Xbox One S support HDR (High Dynamic Range). For more on this colourful new feature you can check out our HDR article. The standard PS4 and PS4 Slim also now supports HDR thanks to a post-launch patch. The core difference here isn’t HDR, but instead resolution: the PS4 Pro has the ability to output games at a resolution higher than Full HD. Since release we have seen certain titles render at a native 4K resolution while others settle for an upscaled alternative. Whatever the elevated resolution is then be upscaled to 4K. If you’re playing in Full HD, you’ll end up with smoother anti-aliasing, meaning the divisions between objects on screen will be much smoother than on the regular PS4. Many of the PS4 Pro supported titles use a 4K “checkerboard” rendering technique that subsequently improves textures and specular effects, making for a cleaner, crisper overall image without putting out a native 4K resolution. Developers are also free to take advantage of the additional power of the Pro however they see fit. In the instance of the recent, excellent Nioh, players were given the choice whether to play the game with a higher resolution or framerate with multiple settings, much like PC players enjoy. The Xbox One S only upscales games to 4K with no enhancements aside from HDR, as mentioned above. PS4 Pro vs Xbox One S – Boost Mode vs Ultra HD Blu-Ray. Features-wise, the two are very similar, but there’s one key differentiator that gives the Xbox One S a massive boost, and that’s its Ultra HD Blu-ray player. Incredibly, despite owning the UHD Blu-ray standard, Sony has chosen not to include the technology in its flagship console. 4K streaming is supported on YouTube and Netflix for both consoles, with more services on the way. When it first launched the PS4 Pro was only capable of improving visuals and performance on titles officially patched by developers. However, this all changed with the arrival of Boost Mode, a new feature introduced in the PS4’s 4.50 firmware update. When activated from the settings menu, this feature will improve performance of all PS4 titles, regardless if they’ve been patched or not. Of course, the results are mixed. PS4 Pro vs Xbox One S – What games can I play on it? Both the PS4 Pro and Xbox One S support all existing games, whether they be physical or digital. Those wishing to upgrade don’t need to worry about re-purchasing their entire library. In terms of games with visual benefits, specific games have been upgraded for both systems to support HDR content, with PS4 Pro being the only one to benefit from higher resolutions at the time of writing. We’ve compiled some specific games for each system below, including some of the things you can expect. Resident Evil 7 – Capcom’s latest survival horror masterpiece benefits hugely from HDR. The virtual reality experience is also enhanced by PS4 Pro with enhanced visuals on PlayStation VR. The Last Guardian – Having launched with support for 4K and 1080p performance modes, Team Ico’s latest effort is a sight to behold. HDR is also supported on the standard PS4. The Last of Us Remastered – Naughty Dog’s modern classic is a great showpiece for HDR. It also supports 4K at 60fps, which is nothing to sniff at. Hitman – HDR support is absent, although both performance and textures are boosted on PS4 Pro. Rise of the Tomb Raider – One of the shining examples of PS4 Pro upgrades. Crystal Dynamics has implemented visual improvements in both 4K and 1080p for Pro owners. Battlefield 1 – The framerate across epic multiplayer battles receives a huge boost thanks to PS4 Pro, helped further by additional terrain detail on each map. Gears of War 4 – Acting as the pioneering example of HDR on Xbox One S, Gears of War 4 was the first of a few select titles to support the feature. Forza Horizon 3 – Heralded as one of 2016’s best racers, Horizon 3 looks even better with a healthy dose of HDR on Xbox One S. Final Fantasy 15 – It turns out HDR is just what Noctis and friends needed, adding an extra helping of colour to the JRPG’s gorgeous open world. ReCore – It may have felt somewhat unfinished and underwhelming, but ReCore was a gorgeous sight to behold at times. The sandy environments are made even better with HDR enabled. It’s clear Microsoft has focused on delivering 4K video content, while Sony has tried its best to produce a more powerful console designed with gaming in mind. The upcoming Boost Mode feature is bound to sway a lot of consumers looking for a genuine difference between the Pro and original PS4. Which of these consoles is best for you can differ depending on your love for fancy visuals, top notch games or 4K video content. If you haven’t found yourself wishing for higher framerates and crisper visuals on your current console than upgrading might not be the right choice, especially if you’re yet to invest in a 4K display. The new Xbox is here, so it's time to make a decision.​ The Xbox One S is finally here - well the monster 2TB version at least - and it's pretty awesome. It's the replacement to the original Xbox One and comes with some new features that might interest those who haven't yet jumped on the Xbox One train or even those just looking for an even better console. Before you splash some cash though, we thought you'd like to see how the Xbox One S measures up against the original Xbox One. XBOX ONE S VS XBOX ONE - RELEASE DATE. If you bought an Xbox One at launch, we're coming up to the three-year anniversary in November, which means that your Xbox One might be getting on a bit. The Xbox One S is designed to bridge the gap between the original console and the super-powered, 4K-focused Project Scorpio that's due out at the end of 2017. The Xbox One S 2TB model is out now, priced at £349.99. There's no word on when the 1TB or 500GB versions of the Xbox One S will arrive. XBOX ONE S VS XBOX ONE - PRICE. You can pick up an original Xbox One with a game for around £250 nowadays, although that's usually the 500GB version, which is a little on the small side for games nowadays. The Xbox One S will launch in three variants, depending on the hard drive size you want. The 2TB launch edition is £349, while the 1TB edition is £299 and the 500GB edition is £249. Retailers are currently only selling the 2TB console, which is available now. XBOX ONE S VS XBOX ONE - DESIGN. The biggest design change for the Xbox One S is its size. It's actually 40% smaller than the original Xbox One and has finally integrated the power brick into the console itself. That means there's a lot less bulk all round. We always thought the 333mm x 276mm x 78mm dimensions of the Xbox One were far too huge, but we've not had any fan issues with our one yet - unlike our launch PS4. The Xbox One S is a far more svelte 297mm x 232mm x 65mm, which actually makes it a smidgen smaller than the PS4. So, smaller console and no power brick? That's certainly a win for the Xbox One S. But that's not all. It can also stand vertically, unlike the original console, which may come as quite the welcome news to some people who like to have a vertical console. You will have to buy the vertical stand separately though, unless you're buying the 2TB console. It's a good-looking machine. The Xbox One S still has three USB ports, just like the current model. It also still features an IR Blaster and the paring button has been moved to the front of the console rather than being hidden around the side like before, along with one USB port. The Kinect Port is missing on the Xbox One S though, so you'll need to purchase an adapter if you want to take part in some motion-gaming or utilise voice commands without a headset on Xbox One S. XBOX ONE S VS XBOX ONE - FEATURES. But it's not just about the design - although that is a very appealing quality of the Xbox One S. Microsoft's slimline Xbox One also has some other features up its sleeve that might appeal to gamers looking to be on the cutting edge without having to move to PC. For one, the Xbox One S now supports High Dynamic Range technology or HDR, which allows you to play games with richer and more luminous colours. The feature won't actually be utilised until September for games though, as Forza Horizon 3 is the first game to support HDR. Gears of War 4 , along with a number of other future titles yet to be announced, will also be HDR ready. Then you've got the Ultra HD 4K support. With the Xbox One S you'll be able to stream 4K content from Netflix, Amazon Prime Instant Video and other sources, as well as watching Ultra HD 4K Blu-rays just by pushing them in the disc drive. The Xbox One S adds support for HDMI 2.0a too, which means it's capable of pushing out proper 4K 60Hz output for video content. This is a great boon for AV lovers as a standalone 4K Blu-ray player costs a lot more than the Xbox One S, so you're getting a lot more bang with your buck here. That's a lot more graphical power than the original Xbox One. Another win for the One S. XBOX ONE S VS XBOX ONE - GAMES. Several developers have already said they'll be taking advantage of the new HDR technology, including Forza Horizon 3 and Gears of War 4 , but that doesn't mean that the Xbox One S is in a league of its own in terms of games. All your existing games and content will work on the new Xbox One S. It's more of a family affair than a new console really, you just get the added extras if you upgrade or decide to by the Xbox One S. XBOX ONE S VS XBOX ONE - ACCESSORIES. Then there's the accessories. It's the same story here. All your existing kit will work with the new Xbox One S, although you will need an adaptor if you want to use the Kinect as the new console doesn't have the proprietary Kinect port. However, even though you'll need to do that, there's a brand new accessory that you'll get with the Xbox One S - the new Xbox One Wireless Controller. This new pad is a streamlined version of the original Wireless controller, but it's got a few tweaks that give it the edge. For one, it's got the same rear textured grip as the stunning Xbox One Elite Controller. But it's also got twice the wireless range of the original pad thanks to Bluetooth support. That means you can get further away from your Xbox One S - and your big-ass TV - without risk of losing your connection or impacting your gameplay in any way. The analogue sticks have been tweaked slightly too to reduce wear over time, which is always a good thing.
