Xbox One Scorpio vs PS4 Pro: Microsoft console like high-spec PC worth THOUSANDS. MICROSOFT's Xbox One Scorpio will be the "most powerful console you've ever seen". Xbox One Scorpio vs PS4 Pro specs. The battle between the Xbox One Scorpio and PS4 Pro rages on, as Microsoft compares its new console to a high-end PC worth thousands of dollars. With the PS4 Pro recently launching worldwide to largely positive reviews, Microsoft has been hyping Project Scorpio ahead of its 2017 release date. Without revealing full Xbox One Scorpio specs, Microsoft's Aaron Greenberg described it as the "most powerful console you've ever seen". "It will bring these really true 4K, really incredible visual games that we've never seen before on the console," he told Xbox FanFest attendees. "People who have spent thousands of dollars on a high-end PC are getting that experience. "How do we bring that to scale in a console in your living room? That's a big part of what Project Scorpio is about." NEW: Xbox One S. Images of the new Xbox One S. Xbox One S [Adrian Callaghan ] The Xbox One Scorpio is being touted as the most powerful console ever created. It boasts 6 teraflops of GPU, which will deliver 4K gaming and support virtual reality. It's so powerful that Microsoft recently had a dig at Sony's PS4 Pro console, telling one site the device won't be able to handle true 4K and that the Xbox One Scorpio is aiming higher. "I think there are a lot of caveats they're giving customers right now around 4K. They're talking about checkerboard rendering and up-scaling and things like that. "They're going to be able to decide to take that six teraflops of power and do what they think is best for their game. But I know that 4.2 teraflops is not enough to do true 4K." But despite talk that Scorpio would feature virtual reality support, it looks like Sony has the VR battle sewn up for now. Microsoft believes the technology needs to gain mainstream acceptance before it really takes off. "I don’t think the creators in the game space have yet found – well, they haven’t obviously perfected the craft of building VR games." Microsoft's Phil Spencer said. "It’s so early, I think we’re a couple of years before we’ll really see that hit mainstream." Xbox On Scorpio will be available in late 2017, although there's a chance it could launch earlier, as Microsoft is ahead of schedule with its production. Related articles. Most read in Gaming. Xbox One Scorpio NEWS: Project Scorpio price could be a PROBLEM. XBOX ONE SCORPIO may struggle against the PS4 Pro, especially if Sony plays its cards right. Xbox One Scorpio Project Scorpio price. Xbox One Scorpio could be in big trouble if Microsoft gets the price wrong, according to one industry analyst. Microsoft has been warned not to price Project Scorpio at more than $399 by Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter. Xbox One Scorpio is currently without a price, but Pachter told Gamertag Radio (via DualShockers) that it would be a mistake to price it above $399, even though it is more powerful than the similarly priced PS4 Pro. Pachter also believes that Sony will cut the price of the PS4 Pro to $349 in time for Christmas, which could put even more pressure on Microsoft. On the plus side, the analyst argues that Project Scorpio sales could be boosted by the rise in popularity of 4K TVs. However, he also warns that Oculus Rift's high price might not make it particularly appealing to Xbox One users, and that the market isn't a big as Microsoft thinks. It was recently revealed that the Xbox One has reportedly sold 26 million units, which is less than half of the units sold for PS4. But perhaps more worrying is that the Xbox One has only sold an estimated 7 million units in the past year. Related articles. Most read in Gaming. Microsoft is planning to unveil its Project Scorpio Xbox console at E3, and now the company is teasing its dev kit ahead of the E3 press event on Sunday. There’s not a lot of new information about the dev kit from when we first saw it in April, but the video tour provides a closer look at the hardware, and reveals that the dev kits look different to the final Project Scorpio console. Xbox engineer Kevin Gammill also reveals that some game developers are creating miniature games for the OLED display at the front. The display is the unique part of this Project Scorpio dev kit, but it’s unlikely that Microsoft will bring this across to the retail console. Microsoft’s Project Scorpio dev kit also includes the same ports as the retail Scorpio unit, alongside three USB ports at the front and a network card for debug information. Inside, a slightly faster GPU, 24GB of RAM (double the retail unit) a 1TB SSD drive as well as the retail console’s 1TB HDD, and the ability to toggle between Xbox One, One S, or Scorpio modes. The kit also has vents on the sides so developers can stack the units on top of each other. Microsoft is expected to unveil its final Project Scorpio naming, price, and design at the company’s E3 press conference on Sunday. Microsoft’s E3 event will start at 2PM PT / 5PM ET on Sunday June 11th. Next Up In Gaming. Now Trending. Command Line. Command Line delivers daily updates from the near-future. Xbox One S. Microsoft cuts Xbox One S price by $50 ahead of Project Scorpio unveiling. Photo by Vjeran Pavic / The Verge. Microsoft is cutting its Xbox One S price by $50 tomorrow, just as the company unveils the final name and price for its next Project Scorpio console. The software giant announced the price drop on Twitter today, simply revealing that Xbox One S consoles and bundles will drop by $50 tomorrow. It’s not clear if this is a permanent price drop, as Microsoft has run a number of deals on the Xbox One S recently. While Microsoft's tweet is confusing and appears to indicate a $50 off the base model that's priced at $249, the software giant has clarified to The Verge that the price cut is only on certain bundles. The Xbox One S Battlefield 1 500GB bundle and the Xbox One S 1TB Forza Horizon 3 bundle will both be discounted by $50. Effectively, this means 500GB bundles are $249, and 1TB bundles are $299. Microsoft dropped the price of its original Xbox One console last year to $299 ahead of the launch of the Xbox One S at E3, and then dropped it further to $279 just after announcing the Xbox One S. The new price drop for the Xbox One S could hint at a more aggressive pricing structure for Microsoft’s Xbox consoles. Many are expecting Microsoft to unveil its Project Scorpio console pricing tomorrow at the company’s E3 press conference, and Xbox fans are hoping to see $399 or $449 pricing on the new hardware. Microsoft is planning to unveil Project Scorpio at 2PM PT / 5PM ET tomorrow during its E3 press conference. Update, June 11th 3:30AM ET : Microsoft has clarified its confusing tweet and revealed only certain bundles are getting a price cut. In this Storystream. Microsoft Xbox One X Price, Specs, Release Date Confirmed. After months of endless speculation and teasers, Microsoft today announced the console that we’ve until now known as Project Scorpio. No, that’s not what it’s going to be officially called. Microsoft has confirmed during its E3 2017 press conference today that the new console is going to be called Xbox One X. It has also confirmed the price, specs, and release date of this console. As Microsoft has previously said, the Xbox One X boasts 6 teraflops of graphics processing power. The console relies on a custom GPU engine that runs at 1172MHz, significantly faster than the 853MHz GPU engine on the Xbox One and the 911MHz engine on the PS4 Pro which only has 4.2 teraflops of GPU power. Advertisement. Article continues below. The company also confirmed today that all existing Xbox One accessories are compatible with the Xbox One X and so are all Xbox 360 backward compatible games and all Xbox One titles. Microsoft is going to use “super sampling’ on the Xbox One X so that games look more visually appealing on 1080p TVs. Those who have a 4K TV can enjoy true 4K gaming with the Xbox One X. The Xbox One X design is quite similar to that of the Xbox One S. There’s an HDMI-in port and the dedicated Kinect port is nowhere to be found. All that processing power requires effective cooling so the Xbox One X has a liquid-cooled vapor-chamber inside. Microsoft points out that the Xbox One X also happens to be the “smallest Xbox ever.” The company is going to release it worldwide on November 7th. The race for 4K: how Project Scorpio targets ultra HD gaming. New spec details emerge: ESRAM is gone from the new Xbox. The race for 4K gaming has begun. PlayStation 4 Pro is in the marketplace, and while success in supporting ultra HD gaming varies dramatically between releases, an established series of techniques is in place that is already capable of effectively servicing a 4K resolution with a comparatively modest level of GPU power. In the wake of its E3 2016 reveal for the new Project Scorpio console, Microsoft began to share details with developers on how they expect to see 4K supported on its new hardware. A whitepaper was released on its development portal, entitled 'Reaching 4K and GPU Scaling Across Multiple Xbox Devices'. It's a fascinating outlook on Microsoft's ultra HD plans - and it also reveals more about the Scorpio hardware itself. For starters, Xbox One's contentious ESRAM is gone. A small, but ultra-fast array of embedded static memory integrated into the Xbox One processor itself, ESRAM was the high-bandwidth scratchpad designed to mitigate for the lower-speed DDR3 system RAM on which the Xbox hardware relied. An evolution of the eDRAM attached to the Xbox 360 GPU, ESRAM is massively fast but suffers from one major shortcoming - the lack of it. Microsoft's whitepaper categorically rules out ESRAM for Scorpio, while at the same time suggesting that developers continue to support it to ensure strong performance on legacy Xbox One hardware. "ESRAM remains essential to achieving high performance on both Xbox One and Xbox One S," the whitepaper reveals. "However, Project Scorpio and PC are not provided with ESRAM. Because developers are not allowed to ship a Project Scorpio-only SKU, optimising for ESRAM remains critical to performance on Microsoft platforms." The whitepaper suggests that the process of render target 'aliasing' - which suits Xbox One and achieves considerable memory saving - continues, but on PC, those targets can now exceed the older hardware's 32MB limit, as you would expect in moving from 900p or 1080p to ultra HD buffers. Adopting strategies that favour ESRAM are good for other platforms too - Microsoft says it saves memory, favours lower-end PC cards with limited VRAM and makes it easier to hit 4K and 'boost visual quality settings'. In our post-E3 Project Scorpio spec analysis, we assumed that ESRAM was a thing of the past for Scorpio, but many believed that it would remain on the processor die in order to maintain compatibility with Xbox One titles. The theory was that the system's 320GB/s memory set-up could not match ESRAM's lower latency. The Microsoft whitepaper mentions nothing about ESRAM's latency advantages - simply stating that Scorpio's far higher system memory bandwidth outstrips ESRAM's wide bandwidth capabilities. So what have we learned from the Scorpio whitepaper leak? Rich lays it all down in this Digital Foundry video. There are other clues as to Scorpio's final hardware set-up within the whitepaper. The six teraflop GPU is once again confirmed, with the GPU's compute power rated at around 4.5 times the capabilities of Xbox One. Four times more L2 cache is also confirmed - a new detail that does not tell us that much, except that that the GPU architecture in Scorpio is at least as modern as AMD's Polaris line. Based on our discussions with Mark Cerny on PS4 Pro, we can reasonably assume that Microsoft can customise its GPU core just as Sony did, with access to Radeon roadmap features up to - and perhaps beyond - AMD's upcoming Vega architecture. Microsoft gives away little here, other than to confirm that delta colour compression (DCC) is a part of the Scorpio GPU feature set, just as it is in PS4 Pro. It's the application of Scorpio's power that is the focus of Microsoft's whitepaper, and other hints about the hardware make-up of the console are few and far between. In the wake of CES, there is renewed speculation that Scorpio may feature more advanced Zen CPU cores. However, a throwaway comment within the Microsoft whitepaper on how developers may wish to use Scorpio's capabilities again makes this seem unlikely. "We acknowledge that developers may not wish to spend all of the additional GPU resource of Project Scorpio on resolution, and this is not mandated," the paper says. "To make the best games possible, developers will inevitably spend GPU resource on other quality improvements such as higher fidelity shadows, reflections, texture filtering and lower draw distances. Another option developers might consider is frame-rate upscaling - running graphics at 60Hz but the CPU at 30Hz and interpolating animation." PlayStation 4 Pro has offered several titles with high performance modes running on unlocked frame-rates - and notably none of them has managed to double performance consistently from 30fps to 60fps. Microsoft makes no claim that Scorpio is able to do so either and instead suggests a compromise - running GPU elements at twice the speed, while CPU-bound elements are interpolated. A move to far more powerful Zen cores would almost certainly make such advice redundant. We're not aware of any console titles that use this frame-rate upscaing technique - though there was a really impressive Force Unleashed 2 tech demo back in the day - but at the very least, the comment reaffirms our belief that Scorpio's CPU technology has not moved on in step with its GPU. A look at the Xbox One APU processor. That's a lot of space taken up by ESRAM - even scaled down to 16nm, it would still occupy a reasonable amount of the Scorpio chip - area better spent on achieving the console's stated six teraflops. And to be fair, Microsoft has never suggested otherwise. It confirmed eight CPU cores out of the gate, suggesting a higher-clocked version of its existing CPU technology and all of its messaging has been about running existing game engines at 4K resolution with HDR rendering. The whitepaper we've seen primarily concentrates on how this is possible. A 4.5x boost to compute power suggests that 1080p engines will scale nicely to 4K on Scorpio, but the reality is that many Xbox One titles render at a 900p base resolution. The leap to 4K therefore becomes a 5.76x increase in pixel-count and at the same time, developers may not wish to spend GPU power on pixels alone. However, the fact that the GPU does more than compute pixels can help in the quest to render at 4K, and not all surfaces are tied to display resolution. The whitepaper also reveals that rasterisation efficiency increases in line with resolution - an interesting metric shared by Microsoft is that an unnamed first-party title running at 1080p sees the number of pixels processed increased by a factor of 3.5x in the leap to 4K, not the 4x we would assume. The platform holder also recommends several techniques in improving efficiency without unduly impacting image quality, citing half-resolution and 'sparse' rendering as two examples. Half-resolution is a technique we've seen before, where intensive GPU effects are cut down in size to effect efficiency savings, sitting within a full resolution framebuffer. "Half-resolution rendering is typically used for transparencies and screen-space effects, SSAO, SSR, and perhaps even shadow accumulation, global illumination and non-important local lights," the white paper reveals. "On Project Scorpio, a half-resolution effect rendered at 1080p and bilaterally up-sampled to 4K could look as good or better than the same effect rendered at full resolution on Xbox One. For example, on Xbox One, the effect is produced at full resolution, say 900p, but on Project Scorpio, the effect is produced at 1080p, which is half resolution." In effect, Microsoft is saying that half-res effects run at 1080p in a 4K framebuffer will look better than a native 900p, which is difficult to argue with. The second major technique it advocates is 'sparse rendering' - which is better known in the post-PS4 Pro era as checkerboarding. Not only does Microsoft advocate the same technique for Scorpio, it also cites the same impressive work by Ubisoft seen in Rainbow Six Siege - to the point where the exact same presentation shown to me by Mark Cerny a few months back is referenced in the whitepaper. Of course, the technique has evolved further since then, with the same core technology also used in the PC and PS4 Pro versions of Watch Dogs 2, with exceptional results. Microsoft's whitepaper describes a first-party 1080p title it has running at native 4K - our guess here would be that it's talking about the Forza Motorsport engine. Microsoft also strongly advocates the use of dynamic resolution scaling within the whitepaper, and it describes it as titles aliasing "a vector of render targets in the same virtual address space, and at runtime choose[s] which to index, increasing or decreasing resolution based on whether the GPU is completing early or late. Thanks to DirectX12, this aliasing can be achieved on all of PC, Xbox One, Xbox One S and Project Scorpio." On the face of it, the in-depth discussion of techniques like this may be suggesting that Scorpio isn't the 'true 4K' console that Microsoft marketed it as at E3 2016. But the practical reality is that the document confirms that at least one first-party 1080p title has transitioned relatively easily to native 4K (our best guess would be the Forza Motorsport engine is the technology in question here), and accepts the reality that GPU resources aren't always best spent on precision pixel-work at ultra HD resolutions. Of course, the reality is that the techniques outlined in the whitepaper have been battle-tested by PlayStation 4 Pro. Titles like Rise of the Tomb Raider, Horizon Zero Dawn and Days Gone have validated sparse/checkerboard rendering up to 2160p, while Call of Duty Infinite Warfare employs virtually all the techniques Microsoft discusses in some way, shape or form. Scorpio's additional horsepower - combined with more developer experience by the time it launches - should also lead to fewer of the basic 1440p ports we've seen on PS4 Pro. But what the whitepaper doesn't cover could also prove instrumental in Scorpio delivering more titles that run effectively on 4K screens. In our original Scorpio spec analysis, our primary concern was the size of the processor based on the six teraflop GPU, where a 56 or 60 compute unit chip seemed most plausible. We now know that AMD's next-gen Vega GPU boasts considerably improved frequencies - and the faster it runs, the fewer CUs are required to hit the 6TF target. Just 40 CUs at 1.18GHz could deliver Scorpio's stated 6TF, or 44 at 1.07GHz. On top of that, Vega's use of a tile-based rasteriser (widely seen as the key to Nvidia's performance lead in its Maxwell GPU technology) could also yield dividends in delivering a more capable 4K console. But to clear, this is speculation based on what we now know about new Radeon features open to Microsoft. The whitepaper we've seen - dated to just after Scorpio's E3 reveal - only confirms no ESRAM, boosted L2 cache and support for memory compression technology. Beyond that, all we have to go on is Microsoft's stated 320GB/s bandwidth, eight CPU cores - plus a motherboard rendering strongly suggesting 12GB of GDDR5 memory. How the final spec will shape up remains to be seen, but from the whitepaper details to the Vega enhancements available to Microsoft, we should be a seeing a highly capable 4K contender. The Xbox One X Release Date will be in November 7th, 2017 offering gamers the ability to play all of your old games and the new ones. When Microsoft announced the Xbox One S, everybody was expecting it, but when Phil Spencer took the stage at the end of E3 2016 and announced Xbox One X, we had some serious news on our hands. He promised "the most powerful console ever built." It's coming in holiday 2017, and the biggest question on everyone's mind is "When will we know the details and the exact release date?" Xbox One X Unveiled at E3 2017. There was some speculation as to whether Microsoft would hold a pre-E3 show to announce Scorpio and discuss details. This would be similar to what Sony did with the PS4 Pro. However, Phil Spencer confirmed in a blog post that they would full unveil Xbox One X at E3 2017 during their media briefing. Now we know! Xbox One X is coming November 7th, 2017 for a cool price of $499! The future of gaming is here, and we couldn't be more excited. Is Xbox One X, Xbox 2? Normally, that wouldn't even be a question, but in a post PS4 Pro world, we have to wonder if it's truly a next generation console, or something iterative like the Pro, which Sony has explicitly stated is not the PS5. Typically, we classify generational leaps as a jump in power that's significant when compared to the last console. That's why models like the Xbox One S don't count, because they're largely the same. Now, Xbox One X is promising things like native 4K and hi-fidelity VR which is something you would normally expect from only the most powerful PC rigs. Another major component of a "new generation" is usually a new format, and in many cases, the inability to play older titles (unless there's backwards compatibility). This is where things get murky with Xbox One X, because Microsoft is trying to break down the walls between generations as we know them. (After PS4 Pro Before PS5) Microsoft's own Aaron Greenberg spoke with Engadget about Scorpio and they asked him if this was the final console generation. To this, Greenberg said, "I think it is. For us, we think the future is without console generations. We think that the ability to build a library, a community, to be able to iterate with the hardware--we're making a pretty big bet on that with Project Scorpio. We're basically saying, 'This isn't a new generation; everything you have continues forward and it works.' We think of this as a family of devices." He went on to say that Microsoft is planning to learn from the reaction to Xbox One X and if it's a big success, they believe it will change the future of consoles as we know it. Of course, the ability to bring forward all of your games and accessories is something new for the industry. Backwards compatibility is, at it's best, just the games. Even that has been hard to get with the past few generations, but Microsoft is promising that everything will go forward with you to Xbox One X. Furthermore, Scorpio isn't planning on having any exclusive games ,except for VR titles. That means even the new games will work on your older system. This makes gamers like me wonder how much better Scorpio can be if the games are required to work on older systems too. Greenberg went on to say, "I think the really important thing for people to understand is the nut we've tried to crack here is ensuring we hit hardware innovation at the same time we ensure compatibility. That term of an upgrade is gone. We are wiping out those generational boundaries. As a gamer, it's pretty cool. Because then I know the games I buy and play today and the controllers I use today are going to work on that machine of tomorrow. And that's the real major step-change." Knowing this, it's hard to really say that Xbox One X really is Xbox Two, but with Microsoft's new approach to an "Xbox Family" Xbox One X stands as something new and different. In the end, Xbox One X is more of a test of the waters, and an extension of the current generation. It's not a true next generation console, and therefore can't be labeled Xbox Two. A tweet on Phil Spencer's account shows that Microsoft is already thinking ahead, perhaps even past Scorpio: @umairshazi Already have ideas for what could be after Scorpio. Great thing in gaming, early tech adopters and best creators of any industry. So, Xbox One X won't be the last we see of Microsoft, which means that the Xbox 2 is still coming. That focus on backwards and forwards compatibility is cool, but it holds back the potential of the console if games that come out have to work on the old and new systems. It would be best if Xbox One games worked on Xbox One X, but new games were exclusive to the console. Even so, the X is exists in a space similar to the PS4 Pro, and isn't a truly next generation machine, despite its power. The Xbox Family: What it Means For The Future. Microsoft is referring to their trio of consoles (Xbox One, Xbox One S, Xbox One X) as the Xbox Family. They are driving home the concept that no gamer will be left behind. If you buy an Xbox game, you can play it on any of the console within that family, and the same goes for your controllers and accessories. The benefit of course, is that playing games on Xbox One X, will allow you to play them in 4K and with potential graphical upgrades like we see on the PS4 Pro. Since Xbox One X is so powerful, though, we have to wonder how much of a difference we’ll be seeing. A leaked document in January of 2017 revealed some of the console’s specs and how developers can take advantage of them. We did a little digging ourselves and discovered some interesting information from reputable sources like Digital Foundry. We found that developers have the option to use the system’s power for things besides resolution. The examples they used were higher fidelity shadows, reflections, texture filtering, draw distances, and so on. Furthermore, we discovered that Thomas Mahler who created Ori and the Blind Forest on Xbox One, has seen what Xbox One X has to offer and he describes it as a “full blown next-gen machine.” Despite this comment, Xbox One X is held back by its requirement to have games that are compatible on every version of the Xbox One. So, Microsoft is making the games compatible across all the systems. That way you’re always a part of the family. What’s more interesting is the Play Anywhere program, which ropes PC gamers into the mix. Essentially, you can buy a game on Xbox, then play it on PC as well and transfer your saves. Recently, a sequel to Shadow of Mordor was announced entitled Middle Earth: Shadow of War. This sequel is releasing on August 25th, and the developer has confirmed it will have features on Xbox One X. Whether that’s simply 4K or something more remains to be seen. How long and how large this “Xbox Family” will grow is an interesting point of discussion. Will Xbox 2 also have games that play on everything back down to Xbox One, or will the family get broken up then? We don't think it's just a possibility, we think it's inevitable. How The Xbox Family Will Play Into Console Generations and Lead to Xbox 2. The concept of the Xbox One Family is unique, and it does offer Microsoft the ability to extend and iterate on a generation, but it's not future-proof. Eventually, that family will need to graduate to a new generation. Xbox One X offers Microsoft the chance to keep this generation for a few more years, but the Xbox Two will mark the beginning of a new family. When we think of console generations, we usually think of them as single consoles. The original Xbox, the Xbox 360, and the Xbox One. The problem with that structure, is that technology is moving too fast for one console to meet the needs of an entire generation. Instead, an iterative approach makes more sense here. One generation, spread across multiple consoles that get incrementally more powerful as you move up the chain. This way, Microsoft can stay competitive in terms of power, but also keep multiple hardware releases within that same family. This is the smartest way to move forward, but even Phil Spencer has to know that the path forward means leaving something behind at some point. Xbox One X will get its time in the limelight, but the next console from Microsoft will mark the beginning of a new and separate generation. Another branch in the family tree if you will, called Xbox Two, that spawns its own consoles within the same generation, thus keeping things competitive while grouping multiple consoles into one generation. VR on Xbox: All The Options. Another thing we know about Xbox One X, is that it will have support for VR. These titles will be exclusive to the platform, since Xbox One won’t be getting a VR solution. The question that’s on our minds, is who will be manufacturing the headset? On the one hand, Oculus Rift seemed like a solid choice, but then Microsoft announced its own line of Windows 10 VR headsets in late 2016. What we do know, is that the headsets are being made by different manufacturers and will start at $300 for the base model. The entire line of headsets also supports inside-out tracking sensors which removes the need for a camera or external sensor. These are different than the HoloLens, which is an augmented reality headset. For the time being, it’s assumed that these headsets will still be wired in nature. Current partners listed were HP, Dell, Lenovo, Asus, and Acer, so it stands to reason that one of these manufacturers are working on a variation of their Windows 10 headset for Xbox One X. Some of these manufacturers are already working on headsets. Acer is working with Starbreeze to create the high-end line of StarVR headsets. Asus has a leather strapped headset, and AntVR is partnering with Lenovo for mobile VR setups. Regardless, Microsoft is promising “hi-fidelity” VR that is supposed to compete with Sony’s PlayStation VR solution. VR will come after the console’s release in holiday 2017. Virtual reality and, by extension, augmented reality, are a growing industry. So far, the technology has been well-received and PlayStation's VR solution is no slouch either. While we've been promised VR on Xbox One X, by the time the console receives virtual reality, it may be outdated. Let's say that Xbox One X does get the Oculus Rift, or something equivalent. This is a first generation VR headset. It works great, but it's the first step. It also requires a lot of power to work properly. Xbox One X has this power, but when the next wave of VR headsets comes, will the "most powerful console" have enough horsepower to meet the needs of a future VR solution? What about the HoloLens? Could it even work on an Xbox One X? The answer to both these questions is a shaky "maybe." Xbox One X will indeed get VR, but next generation VR will be reserved for an even more powerful console: The Xbox 2. The next wave of headsets will have increased resolution, wireless capability, and technologies like eye tracking to make the experience even more convincing. Depending on how VR does on the Xbox One X, we could see a launch of the Xbox Two with a VR headset that is specific to the platform and matches the new headsets of that era. We already know that the VR titles for Xbox One X will be exclusive to the platform and not compatible with Xbox One, which is to be expected. These will be the first games to stand outside the Xbox Family, and they will set the precedent for the future of VR on the Xbox 2 when it releases. . Predicting the Xbox 2 Price. Microsoft is in the midst of a transition between the past and the future. While the Xbox One had some misfires, Xbox One X is looking to come out of the gate swinging with it's high-end specs, VR support, and native 4K. Phil Spencer hasn't said much on the price, but what he has said assures us that it will be more than Xbox One S, and priced at $499. What does this mean for the inevitable next generation console in the future? One thing is certain, gamers will speculate, and we will be right there with them. Join us as we explore the Xbox Two Price! The Xbox One. Xbox One is well into its lifespan, and with Xbox One S, gamers have two models to choose from until Xbox One X releases. Things have been good for the console, but we’ve had some downturns, such as the cancellation of Scalebound which was looking to be a solid exclusive from Platinum Games. With the aforementioned “Xbox Family” in place, the lifespan of the Xbox One is an interesting concept. Since gamers will be able to play their games on both Scorpio and Xbox One (or the S), it lends a longer lifespan to the console. Despite Microsoft promising not to leave anyone behind, at some point in the future, they’ll need to trim the family. I imagine this will happen with Xbox Two or if they really stretch it, the console after that. We kind of assumed Xbox One would last ten years, but this new revelation that games will go forward and backward could make it last even longer, but not by much I imagine. Scorpio releases in 2017, and I would bet that Xbox One won’t make it much past the ten year mark which would be 2023. At the pace of technological development, it will just become too obsolete by then to warrant games being backwards compatible. It will be dead weight for the Xbox Two. The Xbox 360. If we call the lifespan of the Xbox five years, then the Xbox 360 will have doubled that of its predecessor by the time it is finally phased out. Although the 360 had a relatively shaky start as consoles go with the red ring of death a constant thorn in the side of gamers, and losses reported in the initial months of trading, the success of this beloved console soon picked up. The Xbox 360 made it an admirable ten years from 2005 to 2016. Some young gamers today will have been born after the debut of Microsoft’s very first entry into the world of the games console. The Xbox was launched in November of 2001, and was in direct competition with the PlayStation 2 from Sony, along with other now-retro consoles - the Dreamcast from Sega and the GameCube from Nintendo. Despite the Xbox’s successes, notably adding an Ethernet port to allow easy online gaming, the Xbox was swiftly discontinued after the launch of its successor in November, 2005. Support for the original Xbox continued until 2009, however no new games were released for it after Madden NFL 09 in August, 2008. While the Xbox One X released in November 2017, it's hard to imagine that we would see the Xbox 2 any time soon, but Ubisoft's CEO seems to think it could be here in two years. On an investor call, Yves Guillemot said they believe that the Xbox 2 is at least 2 years away. The opinion of a major publisher like this is a major one, so it could mean the Xbox One X is only going to be relevant for a few years before it's replaced by a new system. We now have a name for Project Scorpio, and it's the Xbox One X! It's coming out November 7th, 2017 at $499. As expected, it's not a next generation console, but a super-powered version of the Xbox One. While it will certainly extend the current generation, the Xbox 2 is still coming. Submitted by Quinn on Mon, 08/17/2015 - 20:57. It could be a lame console considering the fact that xbox one had a lot of late updates, and the concept controller looks like its going to be a touch screen controller which will be bad(windows phone controller). To gain more hype for the next console they need to announce it five years into making the console. It also looks like a green playstation. Usually I am loyal to xbox but this is just weird they might as well tell us a component of the xbox two, a better name would have been nice. seems as if they are desperate, im not trying to hate on xbox either but xbox must have a lot of wisdom to be announcing this soon. But I think it would be awesome and very smart if Microsoft and Sony would team up on a system to link xbox and ps games and servers together. They could call it PlayBox or something and if it was backwards compatible for both sides that system would dominate. Submitted by Someone Cool on Sun, 11/29/2015 - 21:29. The Xbox One is a great console. Microsoft did a lot of things right, yet so did Sony. The biggest advantage for Sony was they mainly focused on the gaming experience. Microsoft, however, felt it would be a good idea to put all of your entertainment into one console. They failed. I personally use the HDMI In port for my 360, so I can play the both without having to switch channels. Another reason why Sony is dominating Microsoft is because the PlayStation 4 has now power brick, and is thinner and smaller than the Xbox One. Microsoft should at least release a slim version of the Xbox One as they did with the Xbox 360. I would expect the new Xbox, or as many are calling it the Xbox Two or Xbox 720, to be released some time anywhere from 2018-2021. Microsoft should ditch the power brick, or incorporate it into the consle, and make the console smaller. Another thing is the new Xbox One update just rolled out and it's a spoofed up version of Windows 10. They should just start from scratch with a new, cleaner OS. War on our creative entertainment. Submitted by Mickey on Wed, 12/02/2015 - 03:37. I think people should see microsoft for which it is, being look at how Gates got his business. He ripped off his friend and made a ton of money. He then creates xbox, or he has someone to create it. That was cool because I liked new things and it was different and fun. When xbox 360 came out it was about money and stealing the market, because look at how they pushed it out too early and a lot and I mean a lot of people suffered from this in console failure. Then microsoft pays a ton of money to developers for exclusivity because they knew playstation 3 was so powerful that it would ruin them, and the fact it was more difficult to make games because it was something new to developers. This being said xbox only got fans because of better games coming to it on xbox 360, when ps3 was having a hard time with new technology in the hands of those who didn't understand it, being developers. So sony got wise and made there next playstation based off of what developers were wanting to make game with, hence the ps4. Now developers are choosing ps4 because of the right choice for gamers. Microsoft failed at its attempt to take over the market for greed, now we can all begin to see this for which it is. I mean when the ps3 came out it took pc a few years to reach the power of what it could achieve, that to me was astounding. If you are a true gamer you will have realized these things by now and would have supported the right company for the right reason, not just because your a fan. I have to say sony was not at a war microsoft was. Its really that simple to understand. no difference. Most people don't even get the new console until its been out a year or two. If they released the Xbox 2 sooner than most people wouldn't get the chance to enjoy the Xbox one. PS Wannabes. Xbox One is better than the PS4. Submitted by Joe Haley on Mon, 02/01/2016 - 12:20. The Xbox One is a lot more better than the PS4, because the Xbox One doesn`t charge people more money just to play the Xbox 360 games online on the Xbox One GameSystem. But the PS4 does charge people money just to play the PS3 games on the PlayStation Store Online on the PS4 GameSystem. The Xbox One is always better than the PS4. seems legit. PS4 has well doubled the Xbox 1 sales. obviously people don't mind paying slightly extra if they are spending hundreds of dollars on games and a console in the first place. When will the 360 shut down? Submitted by Ari on Sat, 12/19/2015 - 19:13. I love playing on my 360 but will you shut it down when the Xbox 2 comes out.
