Splatoon's release date on Wii U is May 29.
Project Cars is out May 8.
Delayed in the past, project Cars has been given a firm May release on Xbox One, PS4 and PC.
It will boast 110 different courses and 12k compatibility on the PC, which could make it the most impressive looking racing sim in a while.
Dynamic weather, pit stops, and pit strategy creation is all part of the Project CARS package, while fans can also look forward to graphics running at 60 fps with up to 45 drivers onscreen.
The success of competitive multiplayer for up to 16 players and the ability to create public, private and friend-based lobbies with ‘Join In Progress' could prove crucial to its long-term popularity.
Splatoon is a third-person shooter developed and published by Nintendo exclusively for Wii U.
It features 4-vs-4 online multiplayer matches, where teamwork and tactics need to be used as you face off as Inklings, a unique species capable of switching between human and squid forms.
Inklings can run, leap, and shoot while in human form, while as squid they can swiftly swim through their team’s ink.
The 4-vs-4 Online Turf War is bound to be a hit, where players must claim as much territory as possible by coating it in their team’s colours.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is out May 19.
Coming to PS4, Xbox One and PC, The Witcher 3 continues the story of Geralt of Rivia as he embarks on a new mission to find the child of prophecy, a living and highly volatile weapon everyone wants to control.
The action role-playing game's combat system, combined with the use of magic, has been completely revamped from earlier tites in the franchise and is set to be the biggest adventure yet.

Polish developers CD Projekt RED have promised that each action the player decides on will affect the world, and looks set to live up to its open-world discription.
Attack on Titan: Humanity in Chains is out May 12.
A European launch date has yet to be announced but fans of Attack on Titan in the United States can look forward to the new title landing on Nintendo 3DS later this month.
A delay in the UK release is due to a copyright claim which has seen its name changed to Shingeki no Kyojin: Humanity in Chains.
Fans will play as a member of the elite Scout Regiment as they look to defend humanity from Titans.
It has been confirmed that the 3DS title will feature local and online co-op modes for up to four players, support for the XL's C-Stick and include gameplay wielding the omni-directional blades.
Wolfenstein: The Old Blood is out May 5 digital and May 15 physical.
The standalone prequel launches on Xbox One, PC and PS4 this month follows hero BJ Blazkowicz as he goes back to the year 1946.
the new adventure spans eight chapters and two interconnected stories (released together) that will lead into the events from The New Order.
The two-part title includes Rudi Jäger and the Den of Wolves — pitting BJ Blazkowicz against a maniacal prison warden as he breaks into Castle Wolfenstein in an attempt to steal the coordinates to General Deathshead’s compound.
The Dark Secrets of Helga Von Schabbs meanwhile sees Blazkowicz head to the city of Wulfburg where an obsessed Nazi archaeologist is exhuming mysterious artifacts that threaten to unleash a dark and ancient power.

'Splatoon' Tops One Million Sales, But Unlikely To Lift Nintendo Wii U Over Xbox One Or PS4.
Nintendo's "Splatoon" has garnered success for the struggling WiiU, but it can't right the ship alone. Photo: Nintendo.
Nintendo has announced that “Splatoon,” its competitive multiplayer shooting game, has sold one million copies in just under a month. The third-person shooter, which prioritizes territory over killstreaks, is a funky and quirky shot in the arm for the Nintendo Wii U, a console that hasn't been able to match the popularity of Microsoft's Xbox One or the Sony PS4. Unfortunately for Nintendo, “Splatoon” isn't likely to change that.
While "Splatoon" is undoubtedly fun (its theme song has become something of a meme), and its relatively quick run to one million sales is commendable, it can’t save a console on its own. It just doesn’t carry the clout to drive an exorbitant amount of console sales -- new IPs rarely do -- which Nintendo needs.
But this problem, a small Wii U fanbase, isn’t the fault of "Splatoon" or its development team. It’s tough to sell a console on the back of what’s essentially a team-based third person shooter (something the market isn’t exactly starving for), but it certainly doesn’t help that Nintendo’s not releasing anything else major around it. That’s the same problem the Wii U has had from the beginning. It’s not a lack of games overall, but dry spells between high-profile releases.
Before "Splatoon" (released in late May), Nintendo published two Wii U games worth mentioning in 2015: "Kirby and the Rainbow Curse" and "Mario Party 10," neither of which was particularly brilliant. Neither has sold well, either. "Captain Toad Treasure Tracker" was released in December 2014 but didn’t sell enough to help the Wii U gain much ground. The last colossal release for the Wii U was back in November of 2014, when Nintendo dropped the much-anticipated "Super Smash Bros." Wii U had its best month right after Super Smash was released.
Nintendo showed off "Splatoon" in a Nintendo Direct, the company's main source of video news. Photo: Nintendo.
This isn’t to discourage Nintendo from making new games. "Splatoon" is the first time Nintendo (not a studio working under them, like Camelot) has come out with a new game since 2001’s "Pikmin," a brilliant resource-gathering game on the GameCube that eventually sold more than 1.5 million copies. When Nintendo has good ideas that don’t involve saving a princess and puts them to paper, they can make some fantastic games. But publishing four or five great titles in a year isn’t enough to leapfrog Microsoft or register on Sony’s radar.

Splatoon v2 Review.
Editor's Note: This review was originally published on May 27, 2015, with a score of 7.9. More on our re-reviews policy.
Rushing to paint the ground and claim territory in Splatoon is a frantic activity that never gets old. With it, Nintendo’s twist on the team-based shooter turns the act of making a mess into fun and chaotic matches. But this game of turf wars also has a playful sense of style, one that transforms super soakers, giant roller brushes, and even Nintendo nostalgia into a suitable paint-smearing arsenal. Don’t be fooled by Splatoon’s kid-friendly, mother-approved looks though: there’s a mechanically deep shooter hiding in those shiny pools of ink.
Territory control is a concept that you usually only hear high-level shooter players talk about, but Splatoon successfully takes this tried-and-true idea and makes it central and accessible to everyone by having us splash colorful ink everywhere to mark our turf. It plays with that idea in fun ways in each of its 4v4 competitive modes. Where Turf Wars is about drenching the map in your color and painting over the work of your rivals, the manic Rainmaker mode is about grabbing a powerful weapon at the center of the map and driving it straight into the enemy’s base.
Painting a level is crucial, because as long as you’re standing in your own color, you can hit a button to instantly switch to a fast-moving but unarmed squid form. You can use it to quickly reach trouble spots, then switch back to open fire and defend your territory. It’s a fun tradeoff that encourages you to swap between the two forms constantly, and both moving and shooting feel good at a steady 60 frames per second.
Each of the 12 symmetrical maps plays with the way you paint.
Each of the 12 symmetrical maps plays with the way you paint. Moray Towers has a cascade of slanted hills that dip down into a turbulent central zone, while Flounder Heights turns a commercial rooftop vista into a labyrinth warzone full of catwalks and flat blacktop. The only bummer is waiting for your favorite map to work itself into the rotation. Private matches let you play whatever map you want, but doesn’t award points to spend on new gear.
Each ink-spreading tool is built around the dual purposes of painting the ground and splatting your enemies. The whimsical Splatroller lays down a wide lane of color, but flick it and you’ve got the equivalent of a shotgun. The Splattershot is a trusty rifle, but the different variations you unlock change how fast you paint and how far you can shoot. Coupled with secondary weapons, like the Splash Wall or the Sprinkler, there’s a lot to choose from, but a handy test facility lets you experiment and pick the preset arsenal that’s just right for you. I just wish I could tweak my loadout while waiting for the sometimes-slow matchmaking to get me into a game.
Since claiming territory is such a visual activity, it’s easy to tell if enemies are nearby whenever you spot rival ink. A quick glance at the GamePad immediately tells you who’s winning a match and what areas need to be recaptured. Sadly, this doesn’t make up for the fact that Splatoon doesn’t support voice chat. So whenever I jumped into Squad Battles, I found myself dialing up my four friends on Skype so we could coordinate, but that feels like an unfair advantage.
". the wide range of weapons and gear sets up a great upgrade loop."
Between matches, I got a kick out of visiting the offbeat vendors of Splatoon’s charming Inkopolis. Each one sells useful gear that looks trendy and makes you more effective in multiplayer battles, and the wide range of weapons and gear sets up a great upgrade loop. And some of the arsenal is just ridiculous to look at, from ink-throwing buckets built to drench the competition to The Classic Squiffer, a long-range weapon that looks like it was made from kitchen-cleaning supplies.
I could do without the Squid Sisters, though. This pair of hosts announces major events and which multiplayer maps are available through an unskippable cutscene, and the fact that you have to suffer through their lame banter each time you boot up borders on criminal.
The six-hour single-player campaign has the type of variety, pacing, and amusing boss fights you’d expect from a Mario game, albeit in a shorter form. Splatoon levels take a theme, say sliding platforms or sponge-like surfaces, and build a fun stage around it that’s challenging and well thought out. The Octarian enemies you fight are both expressive and lovingly detailed in a way that lives up to Nintendo’s high standards. It’s definitely fun until the end, but there aren’t many reasons to finish it a second time.
Beyond that there’s Battle Dojo, the forgettable offline 1v1 mode, which has you trying to shoot down more balloons than your rival. With the way Splatoon works, shooting precise targets just isn’t as fun as the rush of spraying paint everywhere to claim territory in Turf Wars. Finally, Splatoon amiibo will unlock fun additional challenges that make clever use of alternate weapons, but all of that is disappointingly locked behind a figurine paywall.
On top of that, Nintendo holds regular special events, called Splatfests, that turns Turf Wars into a fun day-long community face-off, where players choose sides and rally for a team. The rewards are a little stingey, though.
Nintendo’s take on the third-person shooter is refreshingly original, with lots of impressive tools, skillful mobility, and creative maps to play with. Matches are consistently fun and tense, and the mechanics feel simple and fair enough that almost anyone can contribute positively. Not having voice chat is a bummer, but the great modes and maps feel polished and kept me claiming turf for hours.
Nintendo’s take on the third-person shooter is refreshingly original and a whole lot of fun to play.

Splatoon 2 – XBOXONE.
Prior to Splatoon 2’s official reveal, clips of the game were featured in the announcement trailer for the Nintendo Switch, the game’s native console.[4] Its unanticipated appearance led to speculation by the media and public over whether or not the footage shown was that from a port of Splatoon or a sequel.[5][6][7] It was also presented in the trailer in a way that promoted the game as an eSport,[5][8][9] following investments by Nintendo in Splatoon eSport tournaments in late 2016.[10]
Splatoon 2 was officially unveiled to the public during the Nintendo Switch reveal presentation held in Tokyo on 13 January 2017, where it was announced for release in Q2/Q3 2017.[11] The reveal was accompanied by a trailer featuring the game’s new maps and weapons,[12][13] and an on-stage appearance of producer Hisashi Nogami, in-character as a scientist from the fictional scientific group in the game, which appeared in various promotional material for the original Splatoon.

Secret killer.
I think it was announced a couple of weeks ago, but I missed it, but I just noticed that Phil Spencer is not going to be at Gamescom next month. I know he’s just one guy but somehow it makes me think Microsoft are not going to take it very seriously and probably won’t announce any new games. All of which feed back into the things people were saying recently about the Xbox One basically running on fumes until it gets to the Xbox One X.
But then I thought about PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, which has sold 5 million copies now on PC. I think a lot of people kind of didn’t notice, because it wasn’t actually playable or anything at E3 (correct me if I’m wrong, GC), but that game being a console exclusive on Xbox One could end up being massive. Not only is it super popular but it’s perfect for the traditional Xbox audience. I think it could be an actual killer app.
I’m not sure if it’s a permanent exclusive or not, but Microsoft should lock it down if it’s not because I think it’s going to be the secret weapon even they don’t realise the importance of. If there’s one game that can get people and their friends buying an Xbox One I bet it’s this a lot more than Crackdown or that pirate game.
GC: The PC version was at Microsoft’s E3 stand but nothing was playable on Xbox One. It’s implied that the Xbox One version will be a console exclusive for only a short time, perhaps only until 2018.
Swings and roundabouts.
I was quite surprised, whilst reading last weekend’s Hot Topic, to see both Metal Gear Solid 3 and Devil May Cry 3 being mentioned as disappointments. I thought they were the high points of their respective series by quite some way. It was pleasing to see The Last Of Us mentioned though, sometimes I feel like I’m the only one who thought it was horrendously overrated.
But then I think Halo 3: ODST and Gears Of War: Judgment are the best in their respective franchises, so what do I know?
GC: We definitely consider Devil May Cry 3 to be the best and found that comment as surprising as you did. Metal Gear Solid 3 also vies with The Phantom Pain for our favourite of the series.
Happy birthday.
Just got a Switch despite promising myself that I wouldn’t until at least Super Mario Odyssey. To be fair it is a birthday present (though I think my girlfriend wanted it more than I did!) Loving Splatoon 2 so far, Turf War is as addictive as ever. Also, Snipperclips is fantastic – I haven’t laughed so much playing a game in a long time.
The Switch is an amazing console, feels much more expensive than the Wii U and the portability is a great advantage. However, I have two issues: why are Switch games cost more compared to other console versions?
Also, it’s very disappointing that local multiplayer for Splatoon doesn’t include split-screen options. It’s too expensive to buy a second console and copy of the game just to play together. I would snap up an, admittedly costly, second controller if they added split-screen in a future update.
GC: Split-screen was extremely basic in the original Splatoon, and just had you bursting balloons. Together with the decreased frame rate, it’s really no loss. There aren’t many multiformat games to compare prices, but the number of games that are more expensive have been decreasing since launch.
Baby action.
Regarding Anon’s letter yesterday morning, lamenting the lack of bots in Splatoon 2: I’d take the leap and get the game if I were you. I’ve similarly never been able to compete online in any first person shooter, and I agree it seems like everyone else sits at home 24/7 honing their sniper skills to kill you before you can even desperately fire a shot several feet to their left. With Splatoon however, I’m finding that I’m regularly the top player of the game (at least in unranked Turf War, which is all you can play for the first few hours).
I think part of this is that it’s not so much about hitting people, it’s about covering ground, which is much more forgiving than the precision of Call Of Duty if your aim is a little off. My girlfriend also (perhaps not entirely incorrectly) pointed out that maybe my prowess is partly because I’m playing with primarily children, but hey, winning’s winning right!
Also, I’d heartily recommend joining the Facebook GameCentral Nintendo group, lots of friendly multiplayer action.
GC: We’d be very interested to know what the average age of Call Of Duty and Splatoon players really is.
Second console.
I currently have a PS4, which has multiple user accounts on it, and a PS Plus subscription on it, which all the users use to gain access to online features. I am looking to get another PlayStation 4 just for myself, as I am moving away and was wondering whether I would need to purchase another PS Plus subscription?
If I log in to the new PlayStation 4 as myself, would this grant me access to online features, and if so, would this disable online features for the other users on the old PlayStation 4? What happens with game data, e.g. if I play a game on the new PlayStation 4 and then insert the game into the old PlayStation 4. Would I be able to carry on where I left off?
Finally, if, for example, I buy a digital copy of the new Call Of Duty coming out in November, would both PlayStation 4s be able to use just the one copy to play multiplayer online at the same time or would I have to buy two copies of the same game?
Apologies for the ton of questions!
GC: We think you’re going to need two accounts, but hopefully a reader with experience can confirm.
Digital mirror.
This past weekend I finished Stories Untold, which I picked up in a Steam sale. For those that don’t know much about it, it’s a collection of four short stories that last no more than an hour to play through each of them. Each episode has its own story but, without spoiling anything, there is something that connects them all together.
Each episode has you playing from a first person perspective, sitting in front of a PC monitor but in different situations. The first has you in a house playing an old text adventure game, whilst another has you in an ice station. There are light puzzle elements involved that make up the gameplay, but the story is what is all-important.
I have to say that the ending of the first two episodes lacked something for me, but the final two episodes were up there with some of the best storytelling I’ve seen in games. Throughout the whole thing, I was constantly reminded of the TV show Black Mirror, in terms of its tone and how it broke down the fourth wall at times. It’s really cheap on Steam, so I highly recommend it for any fans of Black Mirror and for those that just want to try something a bit different.

RE: First mini-game. An early one that I can recall is in an arcade game from 1980 called arcade-museum.com/game_detail.php?game_id=8745.
After a few shooting stages you had the chance to dock your small ship (single shot) on top of a larger one (twin shot) which subsequently increased your firepower for the next stages (triple shot). Fail and you continued with just your small ship.
GC: That’s a very good call. It looks like 1980 is the time to beat.
Team Rocket.
I was wondering if the GC regulars had any kind of Rocket League matches set up, and if not figure this would be a good chance to get something organised.
I was playing via Cross-Play between Xbox and PC recently, which worked well for the most part. However, forming parties of any kind is a nightmare. The way round this is to set up a private match and have people manually join, which is a great way to play with your friends across different formats and is easy to do. However, you need to search for a specific private match/server. The problem with this is you can’t play with anyone outside the match – limiting player numbers – and you also need to know the name of the match to join, which requires a level of organisation.
Hence this email.
If there’s a group already set up for this kind of thing myself and a few others would love to join. If not, then I’d like to get the ball rolling.
The only limitation is unfortunately this would only work with Xbox and PC players. Sony don’t allow PlayStation 4s to play Rocket League with other consoles and I’m thinking ahead to the game being released on Switch, and those players also being able to join. Sorry PlayStation 4 owners, nothing personal.
That aside I’d like to get as many involved as possible, skill level isn’t that important. The plan is to have games take place on Sundays at 8/9pm (about 2/3pm for any Americans also wanting to join), though this can easily be changed to suit people’s lives.
Anyone who’s interested can contact me at my Steam profile tyran_psx. I’ll also reply in the Underbox for people to contact me.
Inbox also-rans.
The lack of guidance and tutorial for Nex Machina is really frustrating. One question: is there any way of avoiding being whisked off to another part of the level? I find it hard to tell when this is going to happen and often get taken off the level before I’ve got everything.
GC: You get moved on as soon as the last enemy is killed, so leave a few around while you look for humans/secrets.
Does anyone else find the success of the Crash Bandicoot remasters completely weird? Like, the games were fairly big when they were out, but not that big. I don’t remember anyone that cared that much about them at the time and I’ve barely heard anyone mentioning them at all in the last 15 or so years. Where did this sudden nostalgia come from?
This week’s Hot Topic.
The subject for this weekend’s Inbox was suggested by reader Gannet and asks what’s the most improved sequel you’ve ever played?
With games such as Splatoon 2 and Destiny 2 currently coming under fire for how much they do, or don’t, improve on their predecessors we want to know what you think has been the best sequel ever. Not just in terms of its overall quality, but the new features and improvements that it introduced.
What do you look for in a sequel, and how important is innovation and change compared to refining and improving what already exists? How often do you buy new games in the same series, and are there any you always buy – even if they’re yearly?
You can also submit your own 500 to 600-word 4Player viewer features at any time, which if used will be shown in the next available weekend slot.

Kong: Skull Island.
Release Date: Tuesday, July 18, 2017.
See it on Amazon for $24.88 (Blu-ray + DVD + Digital) From our Review: There’s a moment in Kong: Skull Island when one of the soldiers plays some '70s music for Reilly’s Marlow, who responds by asking, “How can you swing to this?,” confused by the heavy emphasis on electric guitars rather than a piano or saxophone. Some King Kong purists may feel that same frustration with Skull Island, but while the aesthetic of this new adventure may be very different, it ends up evoking the same feeling that made King Kong such an icon in the first place. Even if this time, it’s coming to you with roaring electric guitars and napalm rather than Empire State Buildings and damsels in distress.
Release Date: Tuesday, July 18, 2017.
See it on Amazon for $12.96 (Blu-ray) From our Review: In a world where every blockbuster film ends with a gruesome or CGI populated battle for the fate of the world, Free Fire feels like the arthouse cinema’s answer to those tentpole titles. It’s almost like Wheatley walked out of a comic book movie one night, confused, and thought to himself, ‘So that’s what they want, huh?’ and decided to make the craziest, most insane film about mindless fighting that he could. The result is one of the best times you’ll have at the cinema this year, arthouse or otherwise.
Resident Evil: Vendetta.
Release Date: Tuesday, July 18, 2017.
See it on Amazon for $17.96 (Blu-ray) From our Review: The Resident Evil live-action franchise may have been the bigger hit, but the CG-animated Resident Evil movies out of Japan are actually closer in spirit to the games than the films are. That doesn’t necessarily mean that they’re better. Sometimes, they’re like watching a Resident Evil game that you can’t play.
Resident Evil: Vendetta definitely falls into that category, and it’s got a lot of problems.
