Inside Xbox One X Enhanced: World of Tanks.
Many of gaming’s most compelling stories come from those who’ve helped to create our favorite Xbox One games. In our Inside Xbox One X Enhanced series, these creators will share the behind-the-scenes accounts of the work involved in enhancing these epic games for Xbox One X, how they’ve helped chart the course of the world’s most powerful console, and what that means for the future of gaming. Today, we’ll be chatting with Wargaming’s TJ Wagner, Creative Director and Executive Producer on the action-packed World of Tanks .
What specifically is your development team doing to enhance World of Tanks for Xbox One X?
Our renderer uses a physically-based model which preserves high dynamic range values throughout the entire pipeline. We were one of the first games to support HDR display output on Xbox One S, and of course we had to support HDR display output on the Xbox One X at launch.
All tank and terrain textures are authored at super HD. Our Despair engine renderer has been enhanced to run full 4K at a smooth and steady 30FPS. We support Full Range HDR and have increased our lighting fidelity, improved ambient inclusion and shadow resolutions. You will see higher poly models and higher resolution textures at all distances.
How do these enhancements impact the gaming experience?
You will see higher poly models and higher resolution textures at all distances. The game looks eye popping with incredible life like detail for environments and tanks.
Why did your development team choose to focus on these enhancement areas?
Because the Xbox One is so powerful, we were able to go all out with World of Tanks and take full advantage of what the system offers. It has allowed us to increase the visuals and detail while also rendering in full 4K with HDR support. We hope this motivates Xbox players to jump into the game and enjoy the ultimate tanking experience.
How do you expect fans of World of Tanks will respond to playing it on Xbox One X with these enhancements?
Probably a lot like I did my first time, just….WOW! I immediately have to get a 4K TV and an Xbox One X test kit in my office so I could play the game like that every day. My 4K TV and Xbox One X for home are already on order just waiting for November 7th. The tanks look so lifelike in the game, it’s almost like seeing one in person.
How has the process been to get the game up and running on Xbox One X?
It was largely the work of our talented team of engineers to make the changes to the renderer. They had a first pass up and running in a number of days. After that it was optimizing, testing and adding new features. A pretty painless process as far as new consoles go.
What enhancement were you most excited about leveraging for World of Tanks on Xbox One X?
Being able to render the full detail of the source assets for tanks and environments all at 4K resolution and with HDR lighting improvements is enough excitement in itself – plus it is very rewarding not only for us developers, but also for the players out there, as they can see what we have achieved on this great piece of hardware.
What does 4K and HDR mean for your game, games in the future and development at your studio?
Mostly assets that take longer to make and take up much more disc space. It is a development expense we are happy to take on since the games look so beautiful and realistic. We are experimenting now at adding more life and FX to environments and watching what other games are doing to we are always on the leading edge.
Thanks to TJ for taking the time to chat with us about Xbox One X Enhanced. We’ll be bringing you more interviews with more developers in the future, so stay tuned to Xbox Wire!

Okay, it's a amazing free game. I mean it is around 40-50GBs of free game. However, I've played for well over a year (I belive even two or so), and I can say I've not been a non-stop player. I more or less had random periods of time where I'd reluctantly play, then stop. I've reached the tier 10, for the E-100, yet can't even play as the tank because it breaks my bank for repair and ammo costs. I worked a year, and possibly two, in order to reach such milestone, and get virtually no satisfaction. Don't even get me started on the extreme grind times needed to move up tiers starting from tier six. Plus the artillery, one dang shot, and your toast. But, hey give it a try, just maybe buy premium, or a premium tank, because, unless you play non-stop for a year, you'll have to grind like this cheap guy, and recive little to no satisfaction.

Great game, bad company.
The gameplay begins wonderfully, you start driving prototypes of early tanks, progress quickly through fast paced amd fun matches and then you hit the mid tiers. Thats when you really begin grinding. Once you reach the high tiers its too much of a pain to grind for Exp and silver without premium time. The balance on certain tanks and tank classes has needed to be fixed since game release. WG has been recently releasing premium vehicles that are equal to F2P vehicles in terms of power, for OUTRAGEOUS prices. I'll stop ranting, its a fun game, and if you take it seriously and semi-competitively it can be easy to spend too much money on it. Watch yourself.

Okay admittedly the game has some matchmaking and balancing issues. But considering how many tanks there is, its nearly impossible for it not to have those types of problems in moderation? Plus Wargaming is constantly releasing updates with FREE new content. I always see either little kids or they're equivalent complaining about having to purchase premium time to get anywhere, & normally something about prem tank prices also? I started & played the game for almost a year without either and made it into tier 8's on multiple tank lines before spending a penny. Its not pay to win in any way, if you wanna pay you'll save some time grinding xp and creds tho! My advice is just pick it and play, PLEASE learn the game mechanics b4 crying, and by then you'll know if this free 2 play game is your cup of tea before having spent any money in it. I personally play everyday if only to knock out a few daily multipliers and move on, but i do love it. Good ole trusty WoT keeps me around. Hope2Help✌

Long time player.
Played for over 1000 days, love the game and improving graphics. Matchmaking should be fixed if you would add in a player skill rating and match peoples skills plus tiers together.

Awesome, but pricey.
I have played this game since week 1 on Xbox 360. It is a game of strategy. Every move you make, big or small can have a major impact on the outcome of your battle. Thinking man's game. Its an outstanding game in every sense of the word. The catch is, you need to buy premium time and will need at least a tier VIII premium tank to grind coin & XP. It also has a steep learning curve. It is a superb tank game & that's coming from a guy that used to drive a M-48 (AVLB. not the one in game.) I wish it wasn't so expensive with premium tanks That is my only gripe & reason for 4* rating.

could be so much better. if.
2nd time trying to download the game since the most recent update just locked the game up. have played since day 1 and sad to say this game has turned into a grab fest for money by wot. while many of the early tiers really are pretty accurate the further you go the less accurate and honestly more stupid the game becomes. the physics are off, matchmaking is well simply terrible, and honestly there really is a reason why some of these tanks never made it off the drawing board. but with the type of players drawn to this game who do not know any better and wot only seemingly interested in making money i do not expected much improvment in this game anytime soon. and thats sad cause it does have possibilities. flipping tankls and catering to the high rollers will in the end kill this game.

Matchmaking Needs Long Overdue Stat-Based Overhaul.
I've been playing this game since the original Xbox 360 Closed Beta in 2013 and can say this used to be a great game. What has killed this game is the severe lack of a stat-based matchmaking system. Since the player overflow when it was brought over to Xbox One in 2015, I noticed more and more matches becoming washes of one team dominating the other, rarely seeing a score closer than 15-5 during 95% of games played and has killed this game for me. If Wargaming introduces a stat-based system in the future, I will gladly return to this game. As for now, I wouldn't recommend it. 2 stars for the game it used to be.😢

its very fun until mid tier then its 100% pay to win(almost pay to progress)after. the higher tier tanks will go negative on silver, even in winning battles..even if you get thousands of damage and multiple kills, silver still goes negative without paying for premium status every month, and this is without using premium ammo. wanna use good ammo on a high tier tank. get ready to lose 50-100k silver every round. or you can play with regular ammo and have 8 out of 10 shots bounce off causing 0 damage..even while fully zoomed with red bullseye, shots will bounce off the weakest vehicles 5 or 6 times in a row..while premium ammo will penetrate the heaviest most well armored tier 10 tanks every shot..silver should never go negative after a match, especially after a win..and only in higher tiers??WTF..people should be rewarded with more silver in higher tiers, not penalized for playing enough to unlock them. everything about this game is setup for p2w..crews,ammo,free exp,gear..EVERYTHING.

The BS Is Real.
I've been playing this game for 3 years and WOW THE MATCH MAKING AND TEAMMATES ARE SO GOOD (They're just that bad). There's never a game my team can do anything right and every game i play i go negative to easily. It's one reason why i don't have a tier 10 IT'S IMPOSSIBLE. To the new players. Enjoy the BS i went through.
22 out of 33 people found this helpful.
Worst matchmaking ever!!
Its free to play but it is very difficult to play at TIER 7 and above without a premium account. The teams are seldom balanced and are routinely blowouts with scores of 15-4 or even 15-2. Most of the time you can tell who will win before the match even starts.

World of Tanks Xbox One Review: Thinking Man's Shooter.
Wargaming.net's hugely popular PC tank warfare title rolls out on Xbox One.
Developer: Wargaming.net Publisher: Wargaming.net Version reviewed: Xbox One Also available on: PC, Xbox 360 Price: Freemium Get it here: Xbox Live Review copy provided by: Publisher.
World of Tanks has been around on PC for almost five years now. During that time it's been fettled and tweaked into what it is today – a slow-paced, but thoroughly engrossing tactical shooter. It has since transitioned from PC to Xbox 360, and recently made the jump over to Xbox One (with cross-play support for those who already have a 360 account).
It's basically a PvP game in which two teams of 15 players face off on one of a wide variety of World War II-themed battlefields. Some are blasted cityscapes, while others are open fields, countryside and mixed urban environments. Locales range from deserts to the arctic, and the terrain runs from flat plains to mountainous regions, each of which makes for its own unique tactical opportunity. However, whatever the situation, the objective is always the same: either destroy all the tanks on the opposing team, or capture the enemy's flag by parking your tank within its radius for a specific period of time.
In many respects, World of Tanks is a cover-based shooter, since the gameplay echoes the more tactical and strategic nature of tank battles, where you use obstacles and landscape features to help ensure you're not quickly destroyed by the enemy. This is not a game where you drive headlong across the battlefield shooting all and sundry. Well, you can try to do that, but if you do, you'll invariably be very quickly picked off by heavy tanks or tank destroyers.
Nope. This is a game where you need to take things a little more slow and steady. When a round starts, all enemies are invisible on the map, and to locate them you need to move within visual range, which will then cause them to appear on the map. This is where the roles of different tanks come into play. There are five basic tank types – light, medium, and heavy tanks, tank destroyers, and artillery – and each has its own strengths and weaknesses. Light tanks are essentially faster than most, and are scouts, ideal for pushing forward and spotting enemy tanks. Medium tanks are more of a dual support and spotting role, while highly armored heavy tanks are slower, but ideal for assault and firepower. Tank destroyers are more of a hunter/sniping type, while artillery sits at the very back of the battlefield lobbing shells at the enemy from long range, using an overhead view.
Having different roles is an interesting twist that I didn't quite expect when I first encountered the game on PC back in 2010 during North American beta. It allows you to essentially pick tanks that augment your playstyle strengths. I'm a little impatient, and like more action, so I tend to favor light tanks, which are best used for rushing forward, leading the charge and spotting enemies, at which point I then hunker down and wait for reinforcements or artillery to clear them before moving forward again. It's a risky role, but I enjoy it a lot.
The tank role aspect also imbues the game with an unexpected level of subtlety. This isn't just a straight-up shooter as might be first apparent – this is a game that rewards skill and thought. Most tanks can only shoot once every few seconds, so every shot really does count. The highly accurate damage modeling also ensures that movement and positioning is very important – it's possible to take out tank turrets, tracks, or even specific crewmembers, depending on where the tank gets hit. And if you haven’t figured it out already, patience also plays an important part in the game as you sit and wait for the right shot, or hole up behind cover and wait for a tank to approach so you can ambush it. Like I said at the start, if you just roll straight across the battlefield, it's likely you'll be taken out very quickly. This is a strategic cat-and-mouse game where selecting the right position and taking the first shot can very much give you the upper hand.
Winning is important, of course, because that earns you money and xp. World of Tanks follows the traditional MMO structure where your earned currency can buy you new gear for your existing tanks, and also new tanks as you rank up. Leveling up is fairly easy at first, however, once you get to around tier six (out of ten), the game becomes quite a grind, and if you're serious about earning the upper-level tanks, it's pretty much a necessity to buy gold and convert to a "premium" account, which offers accelerated xp and money-earning opportunities. Yep. World of Tanks is a freemium game that you can play without paying for, but you'll have to invest a lot of time to do so. Paying to play gives you access to a faster leveling process, and you can also buy higher-level tanks. None offer any real advantage over the tanks you can earn – it's simply a financial short cut to buying into higher-level tanks if you so wish.
I played World of Tanks a lot on PC a few years ago, and rediscovering it on Xbox One has been a huge amount of fun. I spent almost an entire weekend playing, and relearning all my old tactics and strategies has been very enjoyable. The game is very slick and polished on Xbox One, and looks great too. The tanks are very nicely rendered, and the landscaping is great, with some really nice attention to detail that help bring the environments to life.
While World of Tanks' slow and strategic gameplay isn't for everyone, finding out whether or not it's for you is simply a case of downloading it and giving it a try. It's easy to get into, and some of the lower-level tanks are really fun to drive. Indeed, I often find lower-level games are quicker and more immediate than the higher-level games, where you have to be careful not to fall foul of the more numerous heavy tanks and tank destroyers that can blow you to pieces with ease.
Ultimately, World of Tanks offers something different to the usual shooter fare - it's smarter and more thoughtful than most twitch-based games. That said, you still need to be able to aim well in the heat of the moment, but there's more to do in terms of pre-planning your attack than other run-and-gun games. If you like the sound of it, don't let its freemium nature put you off – give the game a go and at the very least you'll get a good few evening's worth of excellent entertainment out of it for free, before the real grind begins. And by that time you'll know whether or not you like it enough for it to be a worthy investment of your money.
The Nitty Gritty.
Interface: Quite complex, and takes a little getting used to. But once you've played for a few hours, navigating around its numerous screens becomes second nature. Lasting appeal: Huge long-term appeal assuming you're willing to pony up some cash and buy a premium account to avoid having to grind for new tanks and gear. Sound: HIghly effective. Very good spot effects, and the voice-over is decent. Visuals: Excellent landscaping and tank rendering make this a surprisingly pretty game.
World of Tanks is an entertaining and enjoyable tactical shooter with a surprising amount of depth. If you're not prepared to pony up some cash, it does become a grind eventually – but if you reach that point and you still want to play, spending some money is very likely a worthwhile investment.

Wargaming has announced the global release of World of Tanks for Xbox One. The game features cross-play between its Xbox One and Xbox 360 versions. In addition to sporting enhanced graphics, World of Tanks on Xbox One will introduce a Player versus Environment mode called Proving Grounds.
Players using a single Xbox Live account sign-in between the two platforms can carry over all technology tree progress, in-game research, and achievements. Voice chat is also enabled between both Xbox One and Xbox 360 versions of the game. An active Xbox Live Gold membership is required to play the game, although it is free to download. Fans who pre-loaded the Xbox One version prior to launch are able to unlock a special T1E6-X1 premium tank.
World of Tanks was first launched in 2011 for the PC. An Xbox 360 version was released in February last year. The game was positively received in GameSpot's review, scoring an eight out of ten for its rewarding strategy-centric battles and praised for its balance of authenticity and accessibility, but criticized for the grind required to progress.
World of Tanks Gets Beautiful Xbox One Makeover.
Upon diving into our demo of World of Tanks at Wargaming's Chicago studio, creative director and executive producer TJ Wagner jokes that he had to reprimand his art team for putting too many “butterflies and bunnies” into the competitive multiplayer game's upcoming Xbox One version.
You see, while the free-to-play, PvP-focused tank battler features the same content as its Xbox 360 counterpart, the new-gen version, according to Wagner, sports “much better, higher fidelity graphics.” More than just allowing his artists to add more of Mother Nature's cute critters to the battlefield, though, this makeover means every asset, from the leaves on the trees to the rivets on the tanks, will look significantly better.
On top of harnessing the latest Havok physics engine for enhanced destruction effects, the game is fully leveraging flow-mapping tech and HDR (high dynamic range) skies to deliver a world that's as breathtaking as it is brutal. In fact, as an in-game voice commands Wagner to “Move in!”, we're not bombarded by explosive shells, but are taken on a sightseeing tour of sorts. Rolling past postcard-rivaling settings, such as scenic streams, lush foliage, and a gorgeous blue sky, we witness all this polygon-pushing tech in action.
The flow-mapping, for example, allows the trees to sway naturally in the wind and the water to realistically flow past rocks, while the HDR technology shelves static skies and painted backdrops for puffy white clouds that float across big blue vistas in a way that wouldn't look out of place in a nature documentary. Our preview takes place on the game's classic Abbey Road map, but Wagner promises all 40 maps will receive the same level of polish, with every last asset receiving the same attention to detail.
Not to be outdone by their pretty battlefields, all 400 of the game's tanks have been built from scratch to take advantage of the new-gen hardware. From the treads to each individual rivet, everything is being articulated in HD. As we ogle the visually stunning artillery, Wagner states that the tanks actually feature “two and a half times more polygons compared to their Xbox 360 cousins, with the more complex models sporting up to 50,000.”
Of course, realism-ratcheting war machines and eye-popping scenery only represent a part of World of Tank's Xbox One face-lift. Players engaging in the epic 15v15 encounters will also be treated to a much more authentic battle experience thanks to volumetric smoke and that aforementioned physics-fueled tech. Wagner promises amazing particle effects, more realistic flames and explosions, and an overall experience that will inject additional life into the metal-twisting melees.
When World of Tanks rolls onto Xbox One later this year, it won't feature any new content or console-specific exclusives. It will, in fact, be the exact same game—save for the graphical overhaul—that's hosted more than 40 million battles on the Xbox 360.
Wargaming doesn't want to divide its passionate fanbase, but instead bring them together in one big cross-platform family. The content parity will not only allow last- and current-gen armchair commanders to destroy each other; it will let them talk trash, strategize—via server-based voice support—and access the two titles within a single account. Best of all, at least for Achievement hunters, players can grow their gamerscore in both versions.
Those who do choose to unleash hell on Xbox One, will, of course, be able to take full advantage of the system's social media hooks, from Twitch streaming to screen-sharing. The game's new Team Training mode, which encourages players to mess around and organize customized battles with friends, should provide the perfect place to stage those YouTube-worthy moments.
Wagner adds that dynamic weather patterns, the ability for fires to burn and spread, and a prettied-up garage will also welcome World of Tank's Xbox One recruits. In short, he ensures the from-the-ground-up graphical overhaul will deliver an experience that's “more alive and more like war.”
Freelance writer Matt Cabral has never been in a real tank, but he did roll over an empty beer can once in his '99 Jeep Cherokee. It was pretty epic.
