New Xbox One and Windows 10 Features Enter Preview. Microsoft has announced more new Xbox features currently rolling out for preview members, with the Xbox One digital tuner now available in 11 other European countries and improvements to the wireless display app. It's no great shakes for Xbox One, in truth, but there's a wealth of new features coming to Xbox on Windows 10. Here's what's broken in the first wave of the New Xbox One Experience preview. Along with the first round of invites going out to Xbox One preview members to check out the new Windows 10 based experience, Microsoft has published a comprehensive list of known issues. To be clear, this is not a normal Xbox One preview update and initially there are a lot more issues than you'd see on a regular monthly rollout. The list has been posted in full in the Xbox One preview members forums, but we've transcribed it for everyone to see below. Games and Apps: The following are known issues with specific titles on the initial New Xbox One Experience updates. Games Failing to Launch : The following games may fail to launch: Guacamelee: SCTE Unmechanical Elite: Dangerous Pool Nation FX D4: Dark Dreams Don't Die Xbox Fitness Skylanders Destiny: The Taken King Game Compilation Discs (ex. Borderlands: The Handsome Collection, Saints Row IV). Forza 6: You may encounter graphical errors (screen turns a blue or purple hue) when participating in races. Assassin's Creed Unity: Installing Assassin's Creed Unity DLC while the game is open will cause it to crash when the DLC finishes downloading. Elder Scrolls Online: Logging in to an existing character will cause an error indicating you do not have network connectivity and prevent you from connecting to the server. Titles with DLC installation issues: You will be unable to install DLC from game collection as no manage UI is present. Simply download the DLC and bundled title from the Store. Apps Failing to Launch: The following apps may fail to launch: Apps with video issues: The following apps will launch but videos or streams will not play. - SyFy - USA Now - BravoNow - TED - MLB. System Update Errors: If you encounter an update error screen while downloading a system update and the console freezes, please wait 3 minutes before rebooting the console to ensure crash data is captured. Crash data is submitted automatically; no action required on your part. Party Chat: When entering connected standby with a party chat session open, after resuming from connected standby party chat may no longer function. Workaround: Hard reset the console. Xbox Button: While holding down a button on the controller or plugging in a racing wheel and pressing the Xbox button, the power menu may pop up after which the Xbox button will fail to recognize input. Workaround: Hard reset the console. Automatic Downloads: Content purchased from Xbox.com will not automatically download to the Xbox One console. This feature is planned to come later. Browser: You will be unable to use voice commands in the browser; using voice commands in the browser will likely cause the console to hang and require a hard reset to resolve the issue. My games & apps: After downloading a system update My games & apps may fail to populate. Workaround: Hard reset the console. Games stuck in the queue: You may find games are unexpectedly remaining in the download queue. Notifications: Friends do not receive game toast notifications. Live TV: The following issues affect the Live TV experience: Cable/Satellite set top box compatibility is not yet at parity with the current Xbox One experience. Please continue to report video playback and audio issues using the Report a problem app to help us improve the experience. HDMI troubleshooting steps: Go Home and press the menu button on the OneGuide app to quit, then restart it. Unplug and re-plug the HDMI-in cable from the Xbox, ensuring it's seated securely in the port. With the Xbox One turned on, pull the power cord on the cable/satellite box, wait a few seconds, and plug it back in. Press and hold the power button on the front of the Xbox One to perform a hard reboot of the console. Dolby Digital surround sound will not work for Live TV. App channels cannot be set as a Favorite. The "Xbox Snap TV" voice command does not work. You can snap TV via voice command by saying "Xbox Snap OneGuide" or choosing OneGuide from the Snap Center. The OneGuide pin doesn't function. You can launch OneGuide using the app, voice commands, or from the OneGuide twist. You may experience a stuck frame streaming TV to the Xbox App. You can enter OneGuide or resize your window to restore video playback. The media transport controls do not work when streaming TV to SmartGlass and Xbox app clients. When resuming from connected standby the Xbox One media remote may fail to send commands; a hard reset resolves this. Currently this area is not fully populated with content and is missing large sections of the user experience. Activity feed content also may not be actionable and items on the trending items second level screen have not been fully tuned. As Preview moves forward content and features in this area will light up. SmartGlass and Xbox App Live TV/OneGuide: You may experience issues connecting to Live TV or OneGuide when connecting to the console with SmartGlass. Workaround: Set your SmartGlass connection to auto connect, quit the app, and restart. If the issue persists, hard reset the console. Basic SmartGlass functionality is now available including gamepad navigation, touch navigation, remote text entry, media playback control, and companions for apps and games. Other features such as two-finger touch panning, media companions, and power on/off will not function in this build. When resuming from connected standby the Xbox One media remote may fail to send commands; a hard reset resolves this. The buttons for media playback will not work (rewind, play, pause, fast forward, skip back, stop, skip forward). The directional and center "select" button will function as normal. USB TV Tuner: If you have a USB TV Tuner plugged into your Threshold Xbox One console, Windows and Windows Phone SmartGlass devices will crash when attempting to connect to the console. To avoid this, you can switch to the Xbox App on Windows 10 or reset your TV settings and avoid setting up the USB TV Tuner. Third Party Steering Wheels: Using a third party steering wheel will work in games, however, it may cause instability to the console after attempting to use the Xbox button to return to the dashboard. First, need to have a game running. And you can't take screenshots of the dashboard or other apps, such as Netflix. You can take screenshots of your entire console, but you'll need a capture card like the Elgato HD 60. Here goes: When you're in a game and have found a scene you want to screenshot, press the Xbox button on your controller to open the guide menu. How to share screenshots on Xbox One. Once you have taken your screenshot, there are a number of ways you can get share it. The Xbox One comes with a few gigabytes of free cloud storage just for keeping Xbox Game DVR captures and screenshots, but you can also export it either to your PC, or to your personal OneDrive cloud storage for safe keeping. Xbox Live clips and screenshots will upload automaticaly to the cloud, until your storage is full. Here are a few ways to share and manage screenshots and clips on your console. Saving and sharing your screenshots via your Xbox. Press the Xbox button on your controller to open the guide menu. Press the View button (to the bottom left of the Xbox button) to open "Capture options." From here, you can share the clip to the following locations: Your Xbox Live activity feed, which friends can see (depending on your privacy settings). A private message. If you're using a Windows 10 PC signed in with the same account as your Xbox Live, you can access and download your screenshots quickly and easily using the pre-installed Xbox app. Here's how: If you haven't used it before, you'll be prompted to sign in using your Microsoft Account. After you open it up, it should look something like this, with a hamburger menu on the left side. Select a preferred screenshot from the download list, and hit Download to save it, delete to remove it, or share to share it. Other notes. If you have a 4K Xbox One X you can lower the resolution of captures using this method. Sometimes it might be worth lowering the resolution if you plan to share the clips and screenshots on social media, particularly Twitter, since it doesn't support 4K. You can check the upload status of clips from the Manage clips page by selecting Upload Status from the filter. If you have issues finding your recently uploaded captures, it might still be in the upload queue. The Xbox One doesn't have an infinite amount of cloud storage and can fill up quickly, particularly if you're recording at 4K. So be sure to store and manage clips frequently. When not in a game, you can access and manage clips directly from the Xbox guide menu, by hitting the Xbox button on your controller, and then pressing the View key to see recent captures. We are super excited about the Xbox X, however it's abit of a let down on many of us that DOLBY VISION IS NOT SUPPORTED on Xbox X and many like myself will be adding the Xbox X to a 4K TV that supports Dolby VIsion. This will be useless to use the Xbox x as my main device to view movies that come with DOLBY VISION feature because the Xbox x doesn't support Dolby Vision. Trying to do just one simple thing seems to have 360 steps with Microsoft – why is the Xbox One’s functionality such a car crash? “The Xbox One’s definition of usability is in fact the exact opposite – this is a console designed to make life inconvenient for its players unless they sign up for other Microsoft services.” I recently bought an Xbox One, and even more recently tried to take a screenshot on it. This is my true story. Let’s start by not getting too precious about screenshots. I don’t think this feature’s absence is a national disgrace, or devalues the Xbox One greatly. It’s more something that, in the context of the day, I expect to be able to do without fuss. Obviously I’m biased inasmuch as I’m a games journalist – I have more call than most to take and use them. But I find just as often I use screenshots for quick jokes on Twitter, email gags with friends, or the odd forum post. We spend enormous amounts of our lives peering into various screens, living other lives. So screenshots are our holiday snaps, a mix of memento and found object that – at the risk of getting philosophical – are also curated. We take screenshots for other people to look at. And they’re simply part of the landscape for how we talk about games. Here’s an example from a couple of nights ago about Euro Truck Simulator: Bayonetta? I’ve done similar stuff myself and so know that, because it’s a tweet, it’s only worth doing if the time spent taking the screenshot and whacking it up is minimal. Which is why it’s such an astounding oversight that Xbox One’s UI makes it as difficult as possible for you to do this. That Euro Truck tweet would never have existed on Xbox One. Here’s what I had to do the first time I tried to get a screenshot. To start off with you play a game and then, after something neat, either say “Xbox record that” or, if you don’t want online teammates to think you’re a stalker, click the home button twice and press ‘x’. The Xbox One will record the last thirty seconds of footage (to increase the length of the recording up to five minutes, you need to ‘snap’ the Upload app to the UI). We now have a clip – but that’s the easy part. In terms of “Xbox record that” I rarely use Kinect, though its evil eye still squats beneath my television. Its brand of voice control doesn’t come naturally, not least because it frequently misinterprets commands. Unfortunately the ‘double tap Home’ shortcut that is the alternative, used for a good few Xbox One functions, is one of the UI’s most enormous howlers. To actually do anything with your video, or record anything longer than 30 seconds, you’ll need to download more Microsoft software! Bill would be proud. Go to the Xbox Store and download the Upload app. Without this you can’t even watch your clips, so it’s essential. Turn on your PC and Sign Up! Upload will put the clip on Xbox Live for everyone to see, but if you want to get it on your PC – where you can take a screenshot – you’ll need to sign up for Microsoft OneDrive and download the software. Now you have the pleasure of finding out that Upload cannot, in fact, upload your clips as they are. No, you simple-minded fool, Upload can only upload clips that it has processed first. What this means is that you can’t just upload thirty clips at once. The quickest method is to stitch them together into blocks of five and then upload this to OneDrive. You can now download these clips from OneDrive. Finally, you can run them in any video player and take a screen. You could also choose to upload your videos to Youtube, after editing them in Upload. To do this you have to download another app, the YouTube app, and upload from there. Seeing as YouTube does its own compression I figured the loss of quality through OneDrive would be less. Except the videos that the Xbox One takes are only 720p in the first place and are compressed even further during the transfer, leaving you with screens that look awful. The screens accompanying this piece are from this process – look at them full-size. In fairness some type of compression is inevitable, though what the Xbox One produces seems so low-quality the compromise has gone too far. So there you go, that’s how to get a low-quality screenshot from Xbox One. The process just described is Microsoft’s tentacles in action, turning what should be a simple process into a multi-levelled task that requires the installation of excess, bloated Microsoft software. It’s not so much anti-trust, perhaps, as anti-user. And a little history makes amusing reading. When Bill Gates and Microsoft were in the middle of defending an antitrust lawsuit, an email of Gates’s was made public. In it he upbraids the then-Microsoft executive team for the nightmare he had trying to download Moviemaker at home, and the countless incremental steps Microsoft’s software demanded. After a nightmarish description (“that is just the start of the crap”) Gates ends by writing: “So after more than an hour of craziness and making my programs list garbage and being scared and seeing that Microsoft.com is a terrible website I haven’t run Moviemaker and I haven’t got the plus package. “The lack of attention to usability represented by these experiences blows my mind.” Gates is too busy saving the world to play Titanfall, but if he did the man might have a few choice words to say about Xbox One. “The fact that the Xbox One serves adverts to my homepage perfectly every time it starts up shows exactly where Microsoft’s priorities lie.” A key part of the original Xbox’s concept was that it would be constructed from PC components and developing for it would be like working on PC [For more check out Pat’s outstanding history of the original console’s development]. It was intended to be a PC in a box. This changed slightly over time towards more custom elements, like the UI, because Microsoft’s team realised the crucial aspect of Xbox was that what came out of the television set had to in no way resemble the PC experience. Xbox was always about raw power and a great backend network, glued together by instantaneous ease-of-use. The Xbox One is a backwards step from this principle, on both the software and hardware side of things. It’s full of unnecessary, anti-consumer design decisions. I can’t plug my Astro headset into the pad for chat, unlike on PS4 or PC, because Microsoft’s pad is designed with a custom jack. But I can pay Microsoft £20 for a headset adaptor and enjoy the privilege of using my own possession. Practices like this make a mockery of universal standards. Or how about this one. I have a Hori arcade stick for the Xbox 360. It uses a USB connector, which the Xbox One has ports for, and obviously the exact same inputs as the Xbox One control scheme. An accessory like this is a significant investment. It doesn’t work on the Xbox One. But hold up Rich, you say, Microsoft doesn’t owe you anything! True enough. But then you see something like this clip of a 360 Hori stick being used on Killer Instinct just before the Xbox One’s launch. And you realise that this functionality existed and has been deliberately patched out. So what gives? Phil Spencer, as always, is the man I turn to for Xbox information. He told IGN in December that screenshots are “a little more technically challenging than I thought,” and that it would arrive in time and “now it’s just prioritising.” It’s not a straight comparison, but the fact that the Xbox One serves adverts to my homepage perfectly every time it starts up shows exactly where the priorities lie.
