Triple the cost & more features but workmanship worse. Xbox Elite controller owner since day one release. First controller failed just after 3 months. Left bumper plastic clip broke leaving the bumper free to swing like a door. Upper right paddle button stopped working. After a spending several hours on the phone with MS Support they finally swapped the controller even though it had past its 90 day warranty. That's right the same warranty they provide for a $20 headset is the same warranty for a $150 Wireless controller. (Unless you bought the console controller bundle then you get the full year.) The replacement controller failed after 4 months with right stick drifting issues and the left bumper clip breaking again. Purchased 3rd controller from local store with 2 yr extended warranty. This one is now being replaced due to right stick drifting issues, bumper failure and paddle buttons not clicking. I would like to write about what I like about the controller but MS only gives me 1000 characters, I'm out of room. I knew I had a problem when the controller wouldn't stay synced to my Xbox unless I had the micro usb cable plugged into it, essentially making it a wired controler. I have watched countless YouTube videos on how to fix the issue. New batteries, power cycled my Xbox, updated controler. You name it is tried it. Microsoft suggested I purchase a new controler. My original controler that came with my Xbox still works perfectly! I spent 150$ on this beast. I'd say worth every penny if it worked. I don't make a ton of money and I'm just disappointed that my elete controler didn't even last one year when the original I have had twice as long still works just fine. I'm more dissatisfied with the customer service I received from Microsoft. I enjoyed using the taller concave right stick for first-person shooters -- it makes precision aiming much easier. There are two D-pads included with the Elite, a traditional "plus" design and a circular, almost octagonal shape that makes hitting diagonal directions a bit easier. Both easy swap out with magnetic fittings. Even the controller's back triggers can be altered. A lever underneath each trigger can activate hair-trigger mode, which prevents a trigger from needing to be fully pulled. The idea is that you don't need to wait the extra half second or so it takes for the trigger to spring back to its resting spot and instead it can be fired rapidly. It definitely appears to make shooting that much quicker, but only if you're firing in bursts or single-round shots from a weapon that will fire as quickly as you can pull the trigger. Finally, the controller lets you remap buttons to a set of four detachable paddles, which can be programmed through a free Xbox app specifically designed for the controller. Some players find the option to bind a command to the back of a controller beneficial, be it the gas on a race car or a quick grenade toss. I found some success making a back paddle the button for switching weapons in Gears of War: Ultimate Edition, as I didn't have to remove my thumbs from the sticks. I'm not used to having paddles on the back of the controller, however, so I found myself accidentally hitting them more often than not. It's probably something I could get used to with practice, but for someone who's been playing a certain way for decades it might be tough unlearning that. All of the Elite’s accessories feel durable and premium, especially the interchangeable thumbsticks, which are magnetic and snap into place with a satisfying click. One of my favorite customizations on the Elite are the Hair Trigger Locks, which let you shorten the travel of the triggers to help you fire faster in shooters. For racing games like Forza 6, you can extend them for additional control over the accelerator and brakes. The haptic motors under the triggers allowed me to feel when the brakes were locking up and when the rear of the car was kicking out. Race fans may still want to purchase a wheel and pedals for the ultimate driving simulation, but the Elite controller isn’t bad by any means. The customizations continue with the profile slider on the center of the controller, which lets you quickly switch between two controller profiles. This is useful for switching in between game types or even weapon types in a first-person shooter. I played Call of Duty: Ghosts and the controller felt a little more precise than the normal Xbox One controller. Where it stands out is the ability to change trigger sensitivity and assign specific weapons to its paddles. To remap the buttons and change button sensitivity, you’ll need to download the Xbox Accessories app on your Xbox One or in the Windows Store (available now on Xbox One but PC users have to wait until Oct. 27th). Beyond the standard button mapping, you can tweak the sensitivity of the thumbsticks and even the dead-zone of the triggers. You can even tweak the four haptic feedback motors located in the controller. Biggest disappointment? The AA batteries. It’s overwhelming at first and you’ll have to test out multiple button mappings and settings to see what you like. If you want to jump right into a game without customizing the button maps, you can download community-created configurations. The biggest disappointment of the Xbox Elite Controller is the lack of rechargeable batteries. The controller uses two AA batteries, which are included in the box. But for $150, you would think that the Play and Charge Kit ($25) would be included. The Xbox Elite Controller works with the Xbox One or a Windows PC running Windows 7, 8.1, or 10. Windows 10 users don’t have to worry about drivers as they’re included in the operating system but people Windows 7 or 8.1 will have to download drivers from xbox.com/xboxone/pc-controller. PC users looking to go wireless will be able to purchase a Wireless Adapter accessory (not included) for $25. Throughout my time with the Xbox Elite Wireless Controller, all I could think was, “Wow. I really want this.” But at $150, I’m not willing to drop that much cash for a game controller. The Elite takes everything I like about the stock Xbox One controller and kicks it up a notch. For most people, the Elite controller is overkill. But for competitive players or those looking for the best game controller money can buy, its beautiful build and customization options make it worth every penny.
