You will though need either a USB 3.0 caddy to house it, if you want a neat finish, or a simple USB 3.0 to SATA adapter if you don’t mind the bare hardware aesthetic.

The other option is to go for performance and use an SSD for your external storage. Xbox One S Tip: Upgrade Your Storage.
While Microsoft’s initial run of Xbox One S consoles includes 500 GB, 1 TB and even 2 TB options, users will eventually face the same issue we see on smartphones and tablets: That storage will simply fill up as we install apps and games. Fortunately, there’s a solution.
I was among those who purchased an Xbox One S 2 TB Launch Edition console specifically because I kept running into storage issues on my original Xbox One, which features a smaller 512 GB hard drive. (Speaking of which, if you want one too, act quickly: The 2 TB version of the Xbox One S will soon sell out, but you can still get it now at Amazon.com for $400.) Even still, the available storage—which is closer to 1.6 TB than 2 TB, go figure—is filling up quickly. With 10 games installed, I’ve used up 22 percent of my storage, or about 400 GB. And I still have a lot more to install.
The issue, of course, is that Xbox One games are ginormous. Most are north of 20 GB, and Call of Duty: Black Ops III , with just two of the four planned map packs installed, occupies 70 GB of space. Halo: The Master Chief Collection —which, granted, includes four full games—is even bigger once you get all the DLC (downloadable content) installed.
With two of the three Xbox 360 models that Microsoft offered over the years, there was an elegant way to replace the internal hard drive with a newer drive with more capacity. But starting with the Xbox 360 E, and continuing through both generations of Xbox One, Microsoft no longer offers this option. Instead, you can only expand the device’s storage by adding an external USB-based hard drive (HDD).
Fortunately, this is very easy. And mobile HDDs don’t even require an additional power supply, so you may not need to deal with extra wires. And they’re cheap.
There are just two requirements: The disk must be 256 GB or bigger, and it must be USB 3.0, I assume for performance reasons. (Speaking of which, if you get a faster 7200 RPM HDD, it’s possible that games and apps stored there will actually load slightly faster than they do from the internal Xbox One S HDD.)
Configuring a drive for Xbox One couldn’t be easier: Simply plug the HDD into an available USB port. When you do, you’ll be prompted to choose how you’d like to use the drive: As a media drive (where you access music, videos, or photos on the disk using entertainment apps) or for game and app storage.
If you choose the latter, the drive will need to be formatted: Xbox One S uses a proprietary disk format. So choose “Format storage device.” You’ll be prompted to giv the drive a name—“External” is the default—and then to decide whether this new disk is the default storage location for future game and app installs.
Then, you’ll be prompted to actually format the disk.
From here, you can navigate to Settings, System, Storage to see and manage the new disk. (Note that the default save location is marked here, too.)
If you select the disk, you will see various options related to disk management, including View contents (which displays the My Games & Apps view of that disk), Install here by default, Rename, and Format.
From here, you can happily move on to installing new games and apps to the new disk. But you can also move games and apps from the internal drive to the external HDD if you’d like. To do so, launch My Games & Apps, noting that there is a new filter for All Storage, Internal, and External. Select an installed game you’d like to move and then press the Menu button on your controller. In the pop-up menu that appears, choose Manage Game.
From this screen, choose “Move all” and then “Move.” The game will be moved to the internal drive immediately.
Note: If you do choose to remove this drive from your Xbox One S, you’ll need to format it again to use it with your PC. To do, plug the HDD into a USB port on your PC. Then, launch the Disk Management utility (WINKEY + X, Disk Management in Windows 10) and follow the prompts to initialize the disk. Then, right-click the disk and choose “Simple Volume” and follow the wizard to format the disk.

Xbox One: externe Festplatte anschließen – das müsst ihr beachten.
Da die Festplatte der Xbox One fest eingebaut ist, lässt sich das Speichermedium nicht so einfach austauschen und gegen eine größere Variante austauschen. Bastler, die sich an den Austausch der internen Festplatte wagen, können den Garantieanspruch oder sogar das Leben der eigenen Konsole aufs Spiel setzen . Nicht nur aus diesem Grund empfiehlt es sich daher, einfach eine externe Festplatte an die Xbox One anzuschließen.
Der Anschluss einer externen Festplatte an die Xbox One ist seit dem Firmware-Update im Juni 2014 möglich. Die Xbox One ermöglicht den Anschluss von bis zu zwei zusätzlichen Festplatten über USB 3.0. Achtet darauf, dass die zusätzliche Festplatte USB-3-fähig ist. Die Festplatte muss zudem mindestens 256 GB groß sein. Kleinere Festplatten sowie USB 2.0-Festplatten werden lediglich als externes USB-Speichermedium erkannt. Eine Wiedergabe von Musik und Filmen ist so problemlos möglich, Spiele könnend so allerdings nicht genutzt werden. In einigen Fällen kann auf die externe Festplatte schneller zugegriffen werden, als auf das interne Speichermedium in Microsofts Konsole. Grund hierfür ist, dass die eingebaute SATA 2-Festplatte lediglich eine maximale Transfergeschwindigkeit von 3 Gbit/s ermöglicht. USB 3.0-Platten ermöglichen hingegen einen Datentransfer von bis zu 5 Gbit/s.

Verschiebt ihr demnach Apps, Spiele und Daten auf die externe Festplatte, können Ladezeiten verringert werden. Ist die maximale Kapazität des zusätzlichen Speichermediums erschöpft, verwendet die Konsole automatisch wieder den internen Speicher. Zusätzlich könnt ihr auf der externen Festplatte installierte Spiele nach einem Login in euren Xbox Live-Account auch auf anderen Xbox One-Konsolen nutzen.

Das gilt jedoch nur, wenn eure Konsole den externen Speicher auch erkannt hat. Damit das funktioniert, müsst ihr Folgendes tun:
Schließt die Festplatte an und betätigt die Xbox-Taste auf dem Controller. Wählt jetzt Einstellungen, Alle Einstellungen und System aus. Danach klickt ihr auf Speicher und anschließend Speicher verwalten . Findet ihr hier eure Festplatte aufgeführt, wird sie erkannt.
Nach dem Anschluss der Festplatte schlägt euch die Xbox One eine Formatierung vor. Diese solltet ihr durchführen, damit das Speichermedium auch erkannt wird. Da das System etwas Speicherplatz für interne und Auslagerungsdateien benötigt, steht auf der Xbox One etwas weniger als der maximal angegebene Speicherplatz zur Verfügung. Um eine App oder ein Spiel auf die externe Festplatte zu verschieben, wählt einfach die entsprechende Option im Xbox One-Menü.
Wird die externe Festplatte nicht richtig erkannt , solltet ihr sicherstellen, dass alle Updates der Xbox One installiert sind und die Konsole auf dem neusten Stand ist. Als nächsten Schritt solltet prüfen, ob sich die Konsole im Instant-On-Energiemodus befindet. Dafür wählt ihr Einstellungen, Alle Einstellungen , Ein-/Ausschalten und anschließend Energiemodus . Seht ihr hier ein Häkchen neben „ Wenn Xbox ausgeschaltet ist, Speicher deaktivieren „, solltet ihr es entfernen. Hilft auch das nicht, schließt die Festplatte neu an, nutzt einen anderen USB-Anschluss an der Konsole oder startet die Xbox One neu.

Systemsteuerung --> verwaltung --> computerverwaltung --> datenträgerverwaltung <-- und da sollte die Platte zu sehen sein, da kann man die dann auch partitionieren und formatieren!
Wenn dem nicht so ist, dann ist die Platte entweder:
-nicht richtig angeschlossen (Strom fehlt oder Flachbandkabel falsch herum)

Sehe gerade das der Thread auch mein Problem ankratzt, daher wollte ich kein eigenen aufmachen. So nun zu meiner Frage: Hab mir eine größere Hdd für die Box geholt da die alte mit 120 gig an die Grenzen kam mit ca 48.Games und PS Emu Image Games drauf. Zum Einbau ist zu sagen alles kein Prob, alles mit Slayer gemacht hatte zwar dann eine 291 gig große f: jedoch via Bios flash unterteilt in F & G Partition danach alles i.O. Sooooooo lange Rede. Hatt schon mal jemand versucht 48 Games von F auf PC zu saven via FTP und 10 M/bit Ethernet Schnittstelle der Box? Das ist ja ein Wochenjob. ;-(

The Xbox One arrives with a 500GB HDD built-in, and in contrast to the PlayStation 4's easily-accessed storage, it's not meant to be accessed or replaced by the user, ever. While we'll probably leave ours in place to keep from voiding the warranty or risk a ban from Xbox Live, a few folks have already cracked open the console to see what else will fit. iFixit noted during its teardown that there's an off-the-shelf 2.5-inch Samsung HDD inside connected via SATA II inside, and swapping that out isn't much of an issue. Brian Williams has already tried out the system with two alternate drives: a 500GB Samsung EVO SSD, and a Seagate 1TB hybrid SSHD. As you can see in his video (embedded after the break) boot time from off to the dashboard only improved slightly, with the SSD loading in 46.1 seconds compared to 50.5 stock. A test with Call of Duty: Ghosts revealed similar results, with the SSD loading up in 27 seconds and the hybrid drive close behind in 27.7, compared to 33.5 seconds stock. We'll need tests with more games to be sure, but so far it's not showing the improvements seen after swapping the PS4's hard drive out for speedier options. The folks at Tested report doing so improved level load times in Killzone: Shadow Fall from 60 seconds to 39 seconds.
So, if it's not a ton faster, why would you want to take the chance of prying Microsoft's box open? To get more space. Brian's drives were simply copies of the original transferred by Clonezilla, but an individual named Juvenal1 has already worked out how to get the system to actually recognize and make use of drives bigger than 500GB. By copying files from your original drive and using their Linux-compatible tool to repartition the new HDD, you can be up and running with more capacity after just a reboot or two. Of course, this carries significant risks and we don't recommend it for most, as Microsoft's Albert Penello has already revealed support for external drives is coming in a future update, along with the ability to do crazy things like see how much storage you actually have left. Still, if you just need to live on the edge (or store every game released so far and record hours of clean Upload Studio clips) the instructions can be found here.
Update : If you're interested in performing the upgrade, Brian Williams has followed with a video walkthrough for the process of properly formatting a larger hard drive, even if you're not familiar with using Linux.
