Can I use an Xbox 360 controller to play Xbox One?
So I broke my Xbox One controller, and while it is easy enough to go out and buy another, I have a couple of Xbox 360 controllers.
Is there any way to use an Xbox 360 controller to play Xbox One?
The Xbox One cannot directly accept input from an Xbox 360 controller - however, with Windows 10, there is a work around.
Windows 10 allows you to set up your Xbox One to stream to your computer. While streaming to your computer, you are directed to connect the controller into the computer, not the Xbox One.
In this form, Xbox 360 controllers will work for playing Xbox One games. You can directly plug in a wired controller, or use an adapter, if you are using the wireless controllers.
You can only use the Xbox 360 controller for the Xbox One by having an Xbox 360 controller with a cord to connect it to.

Microsoft has confirmed over Twitter that only Xbox One controllers and accessories will be supported on the next-generation platform. The Xbox 360 controllers and accessories players already own will not work on the new platform.
"To deliver consistent, meaningful gameplay to all users, only Xbox One controllers/accessories work w/Xbox One," Microsoft said.
Microsoft also has addressed the Xbox One's Kinect requirement. In a Q&A blog post, the company said it is requiring Kinect with every Xbox One because the technology is "essential" to the next-generation platform.
"The all new Kinect is now an essential and integrated part of the platform," Microsoft said. "By having it as a consistent part of every Xbox One, game and entertainment creators can build experiences that assume the availability of voice, gesture and natural sensing, leading to unrivaled ease of use, premium experiences and interactivity for you."
How to set up an Xbox 360 Controller for Windows.
Many PC games let you play with an Xbox controller instead of a keyboard or mouse. The Xbox 360 Controller for Windows can be easily installed on any PC that has an available USB port and is running Windows 10, Windows 8.1, Windows 8, or Windows 7.
Note This information applies only to the Xbox 360 Controller for Windows. For help with the Xbox One Wireless Controller, see How to connect an Xbox One Wireless Controller to a Windows PC. For help with other gamepads or joysticks, or for information on configuring a specific game so that you can play it with a controller, refer to the manufacturer’s website or support center.
Xbox 360 Controller for Windows.
Follow these steps to install your Xbox 360 wired controller on Windows 10:
Plug the Xbox 360 controller into any USB 2.0 or 3.0 port on the computer. Windows 10 will automatically install drivers for your controller, so you won't have to download or install software other than Windows 10 updates. Once you see the pop-up notification that the drivers have been installed, you can use your controller. Open a game or the Xbox app and test your controller by pressing a button, pulling a trigger, or moving a stick on the controller.
If your Xbox 360 wired controller is not detected by your PC, try plugging it into a different USB port, and then test it again. If your controller still does not work, check that Windows 10 is fully updated. Install any updates and then try again. Refer to your game documentation for information about how to configure the Xbox 360 controller for a specific game.
Drivers for Windows 8.1 and Windows 8 are installed by default. Simply plug your controller into a USB port and the driver will self-install.
If you’re having trouble with the drivers, you can install the controller software on a Windows 8.1 or Windows 8 PC by using Windows 7 compatibility mode. To do this, follow the steps below.
Step 1: Install the Xbox 360 Controller for Windows software.
Go to Xbox 360 Controller for Windows. Scroll down and select Downloads . Select the version of Windows 7 that matches the processor on your computer: Windows 7 (32-bit only) Windows 7 (64-bit only) From the Languages dropdown list, select the operating system language. Click on the software link below the language dropdown list. Save the file. In the downloads location on your PC, right-click the downloaded program and select Properties . On the Compatibility tab, select the Run this program in compatibility mode for checkbox, and then select Windows 7 from the dropdown list. Select Apply , and then select OK . Double-click the program to run it. The Xbox 360 Accessories Setup program installs the necessary files on the computer. You might be prompted to restart when finished.
Step 2: Connect the Xbox 360 wired controller to your computer.
Plug the Xbox 360 wired controller into any USB 2.0 or 3.0 port on the computer.
Step 3: Test the controller.
Open the Game Controllers dialog box. For Windows 8 : At the Start screen on your computer, type joy.cpl . Then, in the search results, select joy.cpl . Select Xbox 360 Controller , and then select Properties . Test your Xbox 360 wired controller by pressing a button, pulling a trigger, or moving a stick on the controller. If your controller is not detected by your PC, try plugging it into a different USB port, and then test it again.
Refer to your game documentation for information about how to configure the Xbox 360 controller for a specific game.
Step 1: Install the Xbox 360 Controller for Windows software.
You can install the Xbox 360 Controller for Windows software one of two ways.
Note A standard Xbox 360 wired controller can be connected to a Windows PC by way of the USB port, but drivers must be installed before the controller will work.
Install using the installation CD:
To install the software using the installation CD that came with your Xbox 360 Controller, follow these steps:
Insert the installation disc in the CD or DVD drive on your computer. If the Setup program doesn’t automatically start, browse to your CD or DVD drive and run the setup program. On the Setup screen, select Install . The Xbox 360 Accessories setup program installs the necessary files to your computer.
Note You might be prompted to restart your computer after the installation is complete.
Install by downloading the software:
Go to Xbox 360 Controller for Windows. Select Downloads under the product listing. Under Software & Drivers, select the version of Windows you’re using (7, Vista, or XP only) and your language from the drop-down lists. For example, if your Region and language setting on your PC is “English (United States),” you’d select English from the list. Select the link provided for the download under the drop-down lists. Open the .exe file downloaded from your browser, and then select Yes to approve installation, if asked. Select Run . The Xbox 360 program installs the necessary files on your computer. You might be prompted to restart the computer when finished.
Step 2: Connect the Xbox 360 wired controller to your computer.
After you install the software, plug your controller’s USB connector into a USB 2.0 or 3.0 port on your computer.
Step 3: Test the controller.
On your computer, select Start , type Run , type joy.cpl , and then press ENTER. Select Xbox 360 Controller , and then select Properties . Test your Xbox 360 wired controller by pressing a button, pulling a trigger, or moving a stick on the controller. If the controller is functioning correctly, you’ll see the corresponding action light up in the application.
If the application doesn’t recognize your controller, try plugging it into a different USB port, and then test it again. If the application still doesn't recognize it, see Troubleshoot your Xbox 360 controller for Windows.
Note A standard Xbox 360 wireless controller can be connected to a Windows PC, but you must have an Xbox 360 Wireless Gaming Receiver to play games, even if you have an Xbox 360 Play & Charge Kit.
Step 1: Connect the Xbox 360 Wireless Gaming Receiver to your computer.
Remove the green label from the wireless gaming receiver. Insert the gaming receiver’s USB connector into a powered USB 2.0 port on the computer (on the front or back of your computer).
Note The USB ports on the front of your computer may not be powered USB 2.0 ports. Try using one of the ports on the back of your computer.
A green light on the receiver indicates that the unit is working.
If the Add New Hardware Wizard starts automatically, select Install the software automatically (Recommended) , and then select Next . If the wizard installs the software successfully, select Finish and then skip to Step 3: Connect the Xbox 360 wireless controller to your computer, below.
If the wizard fails to install the software, continue to Step 2.
Step 2: Install the Xbox gaming receiver software.
If you have the installation disc that came with your Xbox 360 Wireless Gaming Receiver, you can install the software from that disc. If you don’t have the disc, you can install the software by downloading it online.
Install using the installation CD:
Insert the installation disc into the CD or DVD drive of your computer. If the setup program doesn’t automatically start, browse to your CD or DVD drive and run the setup program.
Follow the steps to install the software.
Note You might be prompted to restart your computer after the installation is complete.
Install by downloading the software:
Go to the Software Downloads section of the Microsoft Hardware website. In the Search for download field, type "Xbox" and select Gaming as the product type. Select Xbox 360 Wireless Controller for Windows as the product (this is the software for the wireless gaming receiver). Select the version of Microsoft Windows you’re using on your computer, select your operating system language, and then select Download . Select Run . The Xbox 360 Accessories setup program installs the necessary files to your computer.
Note You might be prompted to restart your computer after the installation is complete.
Step 3: Connect the Xbox 360 wireless controller to your computer.
Turn on the Xbox 360 wireless controller by pressing and holding the Guide button . On the receiver, press the connect button, which is a circular button located near the middle of the receiver. The light will flash green.
Press the connect button on the controller, which is a small circular button located on the front edge of the controller as you hold it in your hands.

How Do Xbox Controllers Work?
Microsoft's Xbox brand is a successful line of gaming consoles. Since its introduction in 2001, the Xbox has undergone several technological changes, leading to the launch of the Xbox 360 in 2005 and the Xbox One in 2013. Each succeeding model features upgraded hardware and software options that enhance gameplay and on-screen graphics. It helps if shoppers understand the way Xbox controllers work to ensure that they match the right controller with the console.
Technical Description.
Microsoft produces wireless and wired controllers. Each type operates similarly, with the wireless accessory offering greater mobility.
Xbox Wireless Controllers.
Xbox wireless controllers emit a steady stream of waves at specific frequencies. According to Microsoft, the Xbox 360 controller works at 2.4 GHz, while the Xbox One controller supports dual bands: 2.4GHz and 5GHz. While the controllers work as emitters, Xbox consoles work as receivers, monitoring the transmissions from the controller, similar to the way a TV detects and monitors waves.
Within an Xbox controller is an advanced chip capable of mapping out the different buttons. Whenever a user presses a button, it causes a change in the controller's circuitry; each button causes a unique circuit change. The processor detects this, converts the information into a code, and then transmits the data as waves to the console. The console in turn receives and interprets the data, and then initiates the correct programmed response.
Xbox Wired Controllers.
Wired controllers work in a similar way to wireless models. However, the signal runs via the wire to the console, which then converts it and executes the right response. The whole process occurs in milliseconds, making it appear nearly instant.
Types of Xbox Controllers.
Xbox controllers vary based on their hardware support and features. Shoppers should understand the key differences in order to make the right purchase.
Xbox Duke Controller.
Introduced in 2001, the Xbox Duke controller only works with the original Xbox console and derives its nickname, Duke, from its huge size. The Duke is a wired controller that connects to the Xbox via one of the four console ports located in front. It features a directional pad, two analog sticks, twin analog triggers, and six analog action buttons, as well as "Start" and "Back" buttons.
Xbox S-Type Controller.
The Xbox S-type controller, also known as Akebono, is light and small, and only works with the original Xbox; it is not compatible with the Xbox 360 or Xbox One. While the landscape of the S-type varies with the Duke, it shares similar button configurations, including six 8-bit analog buttons, two analog triggers, two analog sticks, and a directional pad with pressure-sensitive sensors.
Xbox 360 Controller.
Unveiled in 2004, the Xbox 360 controller comes in either wired or wireless configurations. Wired versions connect to the console via any of the two front USB ports. Wireless models work with either a rechargeable battery pack or AA batteries. The controller sports a similar button layout as the Xbox S-type controller. It also features "Start" and "Back" buttons and four buttons mounted on the shoulder.
Xbox One Controller.
The Xbox One controller works with the Xbox One console. The wireless controller has a 30-feet range and works alongside seven other controllers. While it charges over a micro-USB cable connection, it switches of its internal radio and transmits data to the console via the USB connection. The Xbox One controller features infrared LEDs that work with the console and Kinect, and comes with expansion ports for optional accessories, such as a Chat Headset.
Choosing the Right Xbox Controller.
When purchasing an Xbox controller, shoppers should check that it is compatible with the console. Other factors to consider include whether the accessory is wired, rechargeable, and supports headsets.
Type of Controller.
Wireless.
Rechargeable Battery.
Headset Support.
In addition to traditional models, modded Xbox controllers come with adjusted features that allow users to perform actions with greater ease, such as firing rapidly. Gamers who wish to protect their controllers from damage caused by falls should buy a compatible Xbox controller shell.
How to Buy Xbox Controllers on eBay.
eBay offers a wide variety of Xbox controllers. Navigating through the sea of options is easier if you use the site's intuitive search tool. Instead of typing "Xbox controller" in the search box, you can refine your results by including specific terms related to the console, for instance, "Xbox 360 controller rechargeable pack." Read the item description carefully to ensure the controller is compatible with the console.
Conclusion.
The Xbox controller is the primary means of connecting with the Xbox gaming console. Controllers work with specific Xbox models, so it is important that shoppers make their selection carefully. Xbox controllers offer wired or wireless configurations, depending on the build. Some models have rechargeable battery packs or work with AA batteries. In addition to individual units, Xbox controllers also come as part of a console bundle.

How to use your Xbox or PlayStation controller on your PC.
There's no need to go out and buy a separate controller for gaming on your computer. Here's how you can use the controller that comes with your Xbox 360, Xbox One, or PlayStation 4.
Using a mouse and keyboard is usually the most optimal solution for playing PC games, but sometimes a controller can make for an even more enjoyable experience. There are numerous controllers out there from a variety of different companies, but there is no need to purchase one if you already own one of the current game consoles. Here's how you can set up your Xbox 360, Xbox One, or PlayStation 4 controller to be used on your PC.
Microsoft made it extremely easy to use the Xbox controllers for PC gaming. Head over to the company's website, select the operating system you are running, download the drivers, and install them. Then you can simply connect your controller to your PC and begin playing your favorite controller-friendly game.
The drivers officially support both 32- and 64-bit versions of Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7, although the latter should also work for Windows 8.
Screenshot by Dan Graziano/CNET.
To check which operating system you are running, open the Control Panel, select System and Security, and click on System. This information can also be viewed by right-clicking on My Computer and selecting Properties in the popup menu.
Microsoft's Larry Hryb, also known online as Major Nelson, last week released device drivers that make the Xbox One controller compatible with Windows 7 and Windows 8 computers. He noted that the drivers will come bundled with a future Windows software update, however they can be manually installed now.
To download the drivers, visit Major Nelson's website and choose the one that corresponds with your system -- x86 is for 32-bit systems, while x64 is for 64-bit systems. After you install the drivers and agree to Microsoft's Licensing Agreement, all you need to do is connect the controller using a microUSB cable and start gaming.
PlayStation 4.
It's a little more difficult to use the PlayStation controllers with your PC. With the help of a program called DS4Tool, you are actually going to trick the computer into thinking that the PS4 controller is really one for an Xbox 360. The first thing you must do is download and install the Xbox 360 drivers from Microsoft. You will also need Microsoft .NET 4.0, Visual C 2010 Runtime, and the latest DirectX Runtime on your computer, in addition to having administrator rights.
Download the latest version of DS4Tool (at the time of writing that is version 1.2.2) and unzip it to your desktop. Open the folder titled "Virtual Bus Driver" and double-click the ScpDriver application to install it. If the program was installed properly, Bus Device and Bus Driver will be listed under the install summary.
Make sure to close any open games or software such as Steam before you connect the PS4 controller to your PC using a microUSB cable. Once the controller has been connected, open the ScpServer application located in the main DS4Tool folder. The program should automatically detect the controller, but if it doesn't there are two things you can do: click the Stop button, followed by the Start button to restart detection; or ensure the Xbox 360 drivers and ScpDrivers were installed properly.
Screenshot by Dan Graziano/CNET.
The PS4 controller can also be used wirelessly if your computer has Bluetooth or if you purchased an adapter, which must be compatible with Bluetooth 2.1 or higher. The first thing you have to do is enable the controller's Bluetooth pairing mode. This can be done by holding both the Share and PlayStation buttons on the controller until the LED light begins flashing.
Open the Control Panel on your computer and, under Hardware and Sound, choose to add a new device. Select the game controller, and open the ScpServer application after pairing is complete. The software should automatically detect the controller.
If you would like to customize the light bar color, adjust the controller's rumble, create custom controls, or enable the touchpad, which can be used to move the mouse cursor, click on the Options menu inside of the DS4Tool.
