The Xbox One S won't play games in 4K, but it has a feature that's even better.
Microsoft’s new Xbox One S boasts a bunch of new features, like a sleek new design and support for 4K video, both of which sound great.
Unfortunately, it won't play games in 4K. But that's where HDR comes in.
Many who have experienced both HDR and 4K resolution say HDR makes a greater difference in how games look than the difference between 1080p (the standardВ resolution we're used to) and the ultra high-resolution 4K.
Check out how HDR improves the way games look on the Xbox One S.
View As: One Page Slides.
What is HDR?
My colleague Jeff Dunn says it best in his explainer of HDR: " HDR creates a deeper, more realistic picture by dramatically expanding how bright and dark your TV can get, and how much color it can present."
Essentially, you get video games that "pop" and look better than if they're played on normal SDR (standard dynamic range) TVs.
That sounds great! Let's see some examples.
It's clear from the example above, taken from the latest "Tomb Raider" game for Xbox One, that the HDR version has richer colors, more detail in the bright parts, and darker shadows that still maintain the details within, compared to the standard dynamic range (SDR) display.
Look at the giant hole at the top of the picture, and the dome of the building. You can clearly see more detail around the edges of the hole as well as details on the highest dome, compared to the standard display.
Here are some more examples from "Uncharted 4."
The SDR display's picture looks over-exposed and the colors appear washed out compared to the richer, deeper colors on the HDR display.
The darks are darker while still maintaining their detail, and the brights have more color and detail rather than appearing like white blotches. You can clearly make out the clouds in the HDR picture while they're harder to see in the SDR picture.
Note that "Uncharted 4" is a PlayStation 4 exclusive and isn't available on Xbox. The screenshots above only serve to show the difference that HDR makes.
Same goes for these two images. You can still see details in the shadows on the rocks across the bay while keeping a stark contrast against the sunlit surfaces.
The water directly in front of the game's character also maintains its details in the HDR version, whereas the SDR version robs that particular detail.
Which games support HDR?
So far, Microsoft says that "Gears of War 4," "Forza Horizon 3," "Scalebound," and "NBA 2K17" will all support HDR.
As far as other games go, Microsoft told The Verge that it " gave developers access to a small amount of additional processing power" should they want to build HDR support into their games. Essentially, it'll be up to game developers themselves. If they do, the Xbox One S will play those games in HDR.
Keep in mind: There is a catch to all of this.
Unfortunately, to take advantage of HDR on the Xbox One S, you'll need a TV that supports HDR.
And not just any HDR TV will do, as the Xbox One S supports a specific standard of HDR called "HDR 10." If your TV only supports the other standard, called Dolby Vision, then you might not be so lucky. It's like the HD DVD vs. Blu-Ray battle all over again.
So, if you've bought or plan to buy an Xbox One S, and you're considering upgrading to an HDR TV, make sure it supports HDR 10.
You'll also find that most TVs that support HDR these days will also support 4K resolution. That works out nicely with the Xbox One S' 4K video support for playing 4K videos. But again, keep in mind the Xbox One S doesn't play games in 4K. Instead, it'll upscale 1080p games to 4K, which often looks better than 1080p, but not quite as good as native 4K. Trusted Reviews reviewed the Xbox One S and concluded that it's " good at upscaling games."
If you were hoping the Xbox One could play games in 4K, you might want to wait until next year. Microsoft is planning to release another version of the Xbox One currently called "Project Scorpio," which will have all the power needs to support 4K as well as virtual reality headsets and Microsoft's augmented reality headset HoloLens.

Should you get a 4K TV for gaming?
Gaming is one of the most oft-referenced reasons to get a 4K TV. But is it worth it? We weigh the pros and cons.
Today there are plenty of TVs for sale with 4K resolution, the successor to high-definition TV, but almost no actual 4K content. With the absence of pretty much anything else to watch in 4K today , gaming is one of the most commonly mentioned uses for 4K TVs.
"Sure," they say. "There's no 4K movie or TV shows yet, but think of the games!"
Not so fast. Playing a game using four times as many pixels isn't the clear-cut win it may seem at first glance. There are a lot of issues with gaming in 4K as it stands today, and for a lot of people, it's definitely not a good reason to get a 4K TV.
Here are the pros and cons of getting a 4K TV for gaming.
Do you even have 4K games?
If you are a console gamer as opposed to a PC one, then no, you do not. Neither the PlayStation 4 nor the Xbox One are capable of 4K gaming. Even if that support is somehow added, the limitations of the hardware means it will be upconverted to 1080p, not true 4K. Upconversion is how the PS2 did 1080i and the PS3 and 360 did 1080p (with very few exceptions).
So the only way to get games at 4K right now is with a PC.
Neither the Xbox One nor the PS4 allow 4K gaming. Sarah Tew/CNET.
Powerful PC required.
Increasing resolution to 4K puts a huge strain on a PC graphics card. While you may be able to run it with your current rig, you might have to reduce all the image-quality settings. A game you could play with all of the graphics options maxed out at 1080p might only be playable with medium or low settings at 4K. As a result, it might actually look better at the lower resolution.
CNET recently tested a couple of extremely high-end PCs running multiple Nvidia Titan X graphics cards, a $8,800 Maingear Shift and a $7,800 Origin Millennium, and both achieved nearly triple the frame rates at 1080p resolution compared to 4K. You don't have to spend nearly that much to game in 4K -- the $2300 Asus ROG G751 laptop can do decent 4K framerates, for example, and you can spend even less by configuring a custom desktop -- but the test does provide an idea of how much more power all those extra pixels require.
Sarah Tew / CNET.
It's also worth noting that, even with optimal settings, not every game is going to look that much better in 4K. If the game wasn't made to run at 4K, it might look a little better, but lacking 4K textures, it's not going to be a night-and-day change. When I ran Battlefield 4 in 4K when the first round of TVs came out, the edges of things looked crisper (and with less jaggies), but it was only a slight improvement.
This isn't to say that eventually games will look incredible in 4K. They will, but we're several years from that being commonplace.
Then there's the TV.
Not just any 4K TV will do, either. Most of the early 4K TVs, the ones you might be able to pick up ultracheap, used the older HDMI 1.4 connection standard. HDMI 1.4 maxed out at 3,840x2,160 at 30 frames per second. That's not too bad, but probably not as smooth as you're used to. Nearly all console games were designed to run at 60fps, for example, even at the expense of resolution and other factors.
Nearly all 4K TVs this year are HDMI 2.0 , which ups the max 4K framerate to 60. True, you might try to pick up one of the very, very few 4K TVs with DisplayPort , but then you're buying a TV based solely on its inputs, and that's probably not the best idea. (Shouldn't picture quality be first?)
For that matter, does your current video card have HDMI 2.0? Probably not (few do, at the moment), but getting a new video card is likely to happen a lot sooner than replacing your TV.
If you're a medium-to-hardcore gamer, you need to care about input lag . It has a huge effect on your scores, and if you're like me, your enjoyment of a game.
Input lag is how long it takes for the TV to generate an image, adding time to when you press a button, and when that action occurs on screen. When you see something on screen, an enemy appearing around a corner for instance, input lag increases the amount of time before you can react to it.
Personally, switching from a low-input-lag display (the Sony HW40ES projector) to a high-input-lag display ( JVC DLA-X35 ) meant that on Battlefield 4 and Hardline I went from mid- and upper-mid pack for scores per round (I ain't as good as I once was. ), to the bottom 30 percent. Tripling the lag did nothing for my diminishing skills.
Some 4K TVs have pretty good input lag (40ms range), but few are as fast as the fastest 1080p TVs (or many computer monitors). In the end, you may have a more limited selection of brands or models if you want 4K and low input lag.
Sitting closer.
One of the main arguments for 4K gaming is the ability to sit closer, still have a detailed image, and get a massive field of view. Potentially, if you sit close enough, the screen fills your peripheral vision so much that only a VR headset like Oculus could do better.
Gaming from close-up is not without its drawbacks. I sit 9 feet from a 102-inch screen . It's awesome, I'm not going to lie. However, for gaming, there's a big issue you might not have thought about: you can't see the whole screen at once. You can see it, sure, but the corners are in your peripheral vision. With most games there's important information in the corners, like a health bar, mini map or ammunition counter, that you have to look down, over, up, (essentially "away") to see.
It's like driving and having to take your eyes off the road to see what station the radio is on. Except in this case, it may mean not seeing when an enemy shows up on your radar, and he casually walks up behind you and knifes you in the back. This happens to me a lot.
So the added resolution is potentially great for games with lots of stuff on screen, but if you're sitting close enough to see all the tiny details, you might also be so close that you're missing stuff happening on the edges of the screen.
Not a deal-breaker, for sure. Hell, I still do it, because I really like the immersive feel of a huge image. But it's something to keep in mind.
Bottom line.
I hate writing this type of article because I know a lot of people think gaming in 4K is going to be some revelation. It's an improvement as long as you have a powerful PC, but not as huge a one as you'd expect -- not yet anyway. As more games are designed with 4K textures, then it will definitely become more amazing, as long as you sit close enough to discern the extra resolution.

No, the Xbox One S isn't a very good 4K Blu-ray player.
When Microsoft announced that its Xbox One S was going to feature an Ultra HD Blu-ray player, we were instantly excited by the prospect of a feature-packed, bargain 4K disc-spinner. And we know we weren't the only ones.
£250 for a games console and 4K home entertainment hub? Yes please.
Sadly, as our in-depth Xbox One S review revealed, it didn't quite deliver (you can read the full review here).
Yes, the picture and sound quality is passable, but the console doesn't make the most of the new 4K disc format. A comparison with dedicated players from Samsung and Panasonic makes that all too clear.
Of course you get a whole games console, complete with plenty of streaming features, but if you were eyeing-up a full-fat device with which to build a 4K Blu-ray collection, we'd sound a note of caution.
Ultra HD Blu-ray is all about ultimate picture and video performance, and sadly you don't quite get that here.
Fear not, with Microsoft backing 4K Blu-ray, the company's next-gen console, codenamed Scorpio, could yet provide the answer. It's due to launch in time for Christmas 2017, and could finally marry the best of 4K gaming and 4K video.
Of course, you could just wait for a budget 4K Blu-ray player.
Get real.
You missed the point. It plays 4K Blu Rays better than any other player under £349.
And those 4K Blu Rays look better than any Blu Ray player upscaled.
People adopting 4K are not looking for value. 4K blu rays look better than any upscaled blu ray player because they are 4K blu rays. Being better than blu ray does not qualify a 4K player as good. You missed the very simple point.
Title misleading.
The Xbox s is the best budget 4k blu ray player, it's the only budget 4k blu ray player. Not aware of any others currently on the horizon for anywhere near this price. I hope your review of the new ps4 is scathing.
Fingers crossed they will add the missing sound codecs quickly as promised and you can guarantee that Microsoft will keep supporting it prob more so than the dedicated players.
You can start buying and playing 4k discs now and most come with normal blu rays so you're free to choose.
The 4k streaming services will mature quickly and won't be long before you will have to rewrite this review.
Microsoft claim the codecs are software not hardware related so if true the Xbox Scorpio will run on the same software as this so will either be fixed by its release for all Xbox one s/Scorpio or will work exactly the same for 4k blu ray.
I have got me one of these and as it happened it was through a works incentive so did not pay for it but i have to say that i have seen the 500gb model sell for £199 with a voucher code so yes with all the other stuff it can do thats down right cheap.
Also the WHF review is bad imo due to that fact that it is compared to a player i.e the panna which is 3 times the amount that like putting a budget hisense £500 tv up against an LG oled tv.
Its clear for all to see as it stands you cant get better for less !
If you are looking for value then you should not adopt 4K. The Xbox One S is cheap and it is shit. There is no defending it. When are you Microsoft morons going to give up?
Bliz who the hell do you think you are takling to.
Why is 4k not value when you can buy 4k tv's for less than £500 and stream the content for free if you wish.
WHO IS THE MORON NOW, you little bitch.
Click Bait.
The Xbox one S provides excellent services and value for money. Of course there are better 4K players out there but that's not the point.
No other 4K player on the market at the moment can beat the Xbox one s on price plus your getting a full fat games console and all the excellent services it provides along with it.
If your on a budget ignore this misleading article the Xbox one s is a fantastic piece of kit for the money and unless your a tech snob or have extra money to burn you can't go wrong with the S. This articles just click bait trash written by a school playground fanboy by the looks of it.
Consider the price.
Why write this article just after the full review?? The review was quite constructive pointing out that actually the 4k picture was pretty good. It was the sound that let it down if using with a dedicated AV Amp plus a few other features such as using the Xbox to connect your TV box etc which I doubt many people use.
As mentioned in the other comments, the XBox is available for £250 meaning that just by giving decent quality pictures it's a great deal. This article is completely pointless journalism aimed at getting a few extra reads on the page.
4x better than Playstation.
Unfair to compare the One S to a dedicated UHD Blu-ray player that's twice the price. Put it up against the new PS4 and you'll find that films are four times sharper. Sound quality will be about the same -- until Microsoft deliver Dolby Atmos with a firmware update.
Silly review.
I'm sorry but I've seen this. In isolation 4k discs look superb. And blue ray is comparable to any budget bluray player I own. Yes a dedicated player twice the price may dig up a bit more detail. But a 4k disc on this will blow Netflix UHD or sky q into oblivion which are barely blu ray quality and are caled UHD on a technicality. This is genuine 4k for peanuts.
Who do WHF think they are.
Who do WHF think they are kidding? I have a Samsung UBD-k8500 and the picture is pretty much identical to the Xbox, (on my Samsung js8500).
By contrast my BT UHD box that WHF says gives 'stunning picture quality' is awful in comparison.
Obviously the lack of atmos might be a problem for some people. But I strongly suspect 90% of buyers are more concerned with picture quality and than than speakers in the ceiling.
This whole article reeks of advertiser pressure if you ask me. I'd love to see the sales figures of the Samsung and Panasonic UHD players since the Xbox S arrived.
Ok. I have a 4k samsung 8000 series. hdr. my xbox one s does the job with 4 uhd player.
But. I would have to say i still want a Uhd samsung blu ray player as well. i can see the picture flaws with hdr on while playing the 4k discs. The one it has is a "Standard" 4k uhd blu ray player. Not all movies i just discoverd will work with hdr .
I was surfing on net details.
I was surfing on net details about the Xbox One S in a though to buy one. The most attractive feature is the Ultra HD Blu-ray they offer with it. I am disappointed to read that the Xbox One S isn't a very good 4K Blu-ray player. I have to re think about my decision. learn arabic online.
xboxone.
