Troubleshoot external storage detection on Xbox One. This article describes Xbox One system requirements for external storage drives and what to do if your console can’t detect a connected external drive. Important Make sure you don’t have any important information stored on your hard drive before setting it up with your Xbox One. The Xbox One will reformat your drive. Requirements. For an external storage drive to save games and apps from Xbox One, it must meet the following requirements: It uses a USB 3.0 connection. If you’re using a USB hub, the hub must also be USB 3.0 or later. It has 256 GB or larger storage capacity. It has a partition. Typically, drives come with a preformatted partition. For more information about partitioning an external hard drive, refer to the manufacturer’s instructions. Devices that don’t meet these requirements will be treated as media storage, such as for music or video. For more information, see How to manage storage on Xbox One. Additionally, no more than three external drives can be connected to the console at the same time. How to detect your external storage. When you first connect an external storage device with your Xbox One, the console should detect the device and walk you through the process of setting it up. If this doesn’t happen, or if you want to confirm later that your console detects the storage device, here’s how: Press the Xbox button to open the guide. Select Settings . Select All settings . Select System . Select Storage . Select Manage storage . If you see your storage device listed, your console has detected it. If your device doesn’t appear on the list, try the troubleshooting steps described on this page. What to do if your console doesn’t detect an external storage drive. Solution 1: Make sure you’ve installed any recent updates to Xbox One. It’s possible that there were recent updates to Xbox One and that you need to manually update your system for it to detect your external storage. Here’s how: Press the Xbox button to open the guide . Select Settings . Select All settings . Select System . Look under Console info & updates . If it says Update available , there’s an update you need to install. After you’re done installing the update, go back to Settings and select System , and then Storage . See if your device appears in the list. If this doesn’t resolve the problem, or if there were no recent updates to Xbox One, try the next solution. Solution 2: Adjust the power management for storage if you’re in Instant-On mode. Check to see if you’re in Instant-On power mode. For more information, see How to change the power settings on your Xbox One console. If you’re currently in Instant-On mode, follow these steps to adjust the power management for storage: Press the Xbox button to open the guide. Select Settings . Select All settings . Select Power . Go to Power mode . Unselect the checkbox next to “When Xbox is off, turn off storage.” If this solution doesn’t resolve the issue, try the solutions in the following section. Solution 3: Other things to try. Here are some other things to try if your Xbox One still isn’t detecting your external storage device. Remove and then reconnect the drive. Connect the drive to a different USB port on the console. Perform a “full reboot” of the console: Press the power button on the front of the console for about 10 seconds. Turn on the console again, and then see if it detects the external drive. How to choose and use an Xbox One external hard drive. Games are getting bigger, but the internal hard drive in your Xbox One is not. Games like Halo 5 and Gears of War 4 are reaching over 100GB, post-launch DLC continues to grow in size, and that's not even factoring in the 4K assets for "Xbox One X Enhanced" titles. And with the base storage on Xbox One ranging from 500GB to 1TB, your console will soon be full after a few installs. Sooner or later, you'll need to invest in an external hard drive for your Xbox One. Doing so will increase your storage capacity and even make games install and load slightly quicker. Installing an external hard drive is a snap, but you probably have some questions if you haven't made the jump. We're here to help with this guide to selecting and using an external hard drive with your Xbox. Choosing an external drive for Xbox One. All Xbox One games must be fully installed on the console's hard drive before use — even those you bought the disc for. The Xbox One's built-in hard drive cannot be replaced or upgraded without voiding your warranty, so unless you're into the hardware-mod scene, you're stuck with the stock drive. Luckily, the console supports the use of external drives, making it easy to expand your storage space for games and other content. The external drive must be at least 256GB and support USB 3.0. Slower USB 2.0 drives are not supported because Microsoft wants to ensure that data will transfer very quickly between the Xbox One and an external drive. When choosing a drive, your first consideration should be how much space you want. The console has a 16TB limit on external storage size, so for many, the sky is the limit. For context, 1TB externals run in the $60 range, though we recommend thinking longer term and going with at least 2TB. Drives with 4TB and 8TB offer a little more room to freely install games, especially for those on Xbox One X that take advantage of 4K assets. Your next decision will be whether to seek a drive that requires a separate power source. Some drives can draw all the power they need from the console's USB 3.0 port. Other drives include a power cord or AC adapter and tend to be faster than smaller, USB-powered ones. Hard drive speed can be roughly estimated by the drive's revolutions per minute (RPM). And 7,200 RPM drives are faster than 5,400 RPM drives. So 10K RPM drives are even faster, hybrid drives (a combination of a large traditional hard drive and a smaller solid state drive) are faster still, and pure solid-state drives (SSDs) are the fastest. Theoretically, the faster the drive, the faster games will install, load, and save. All Xbox One models, including the Xbox One X, pack a 5,400 RPM internal hard drive. However, limitations of the console's "SATA II" interface means its full potential is rarely used, making a 5,400 RPM USB 3.0 drive a preferred solution in many situations. As for the Xbox One X, which uses high-bandwidth "SATA III," internal load times are significantly increased, as demonstrated by our own extensive testing. Alternatively, you can opt to pick up an external hard drive enclosure and stick the hard drive of your choice inside of it. This is a good option for people who already have a decent sized spare hard drive that's collecting dust — you'll just need to buy the enclosure. You can also recycle any old PC or laptop hard drives you have laying around, essentially making for a free drive. Installing your hard drive. With your drive in-hand, it's time to connect it to the Xbox One. The console doesn't have to be turned off when you connect the drive, although connecting and disconnecting peripherals while powered down never hurts. Here's how to get the drive up and running: 1.Connect the drive to a vacant USB port on your Xbox One. 2. Select Yes when asked how to configure the drive. 3. Enter a drive name. 4. If you want to install games on it by default, select Yes when prompted. Managing your new drive. With your external drive installed and formatted, you're ready to install and copy games onto it. We recommend moving all but the lowest-priority games onto the new drive so that they can benefit from the performance increase it brings. Follow the steps below to transfer games between your internal and external drive in bulk: Open the Settings app on Xbox One. Scroll down to the System tab. Choose Storage . Select your internal drive . Select Transfer . Select the games you wish to move from your Xbox One console. Ensure the storage required for the selected games is less or equal to the available storage on your external drive. Alternatively, you can choose Select all to automatically select the entire contents of your old console. Choose Move selected . Select which drive you wish to move games onto. Hit Move to begin the transfer. After you're done moving your games, the "My Games & Apps" menu will now display the total combined free storage and percentage of used storage on the left side of the screen. Updated December 7, 2017: We added details for the revised Xbox One OS of fall 2017, as well as mentions of Xbox One X, where appropriate. How to Copy XBOX One Games From External HDD to Another. Many XBOX One users may have already considered upgrading their storage already and if you haven’t already opened up your XBOX One console and installed an SSD or larger HDD in there, you’re probably using an external USB hard drive. That’s fine and all but after a while, you may end up racking in a lot of games and your 1TB portable HDD just isn’t big enough and you decide to get another drive. Now the challenge is how do you move your existing games from one drive to another? The XBOX One doesn’t have any built-in utility to do so and you need to redownload or reinstall your game to your new drive. Another method is by moving it back to the internal storage and then moving it again to the new one which is also time consuming. What if you can just copy your existing games from your older drive to your new one? I almost gave up because I didn’t want to risk damaging my existing XBOX One data in my older drive and Windows doesn’t really detect the XBOX One-formatted external drive properly and marks it uninitialized in Disk Management. Thankfully, XBOX One uses the same NTFS file system as Windows and you only need to switch the master boot record for it to work. Simple as it sounds, its very technical work. Thankfully there’s a tool to make this easy. Download XBOX One External Device Converter. Once downloaded, just do these simple steps to get your files to another drive. Detect Your Hard Drive. Run the application as Administrator and click scan. This will detect storage devices in your system and list them down. If you have your XBOX One external drive connected it will have the XBOX Mode enabled under the Mode column. Enable PC Mode. One you have your devices listed, enable PC Mode on your older drive and use SAFELY REMOVE DEVICE or EJECT from the system tray. Once done, reconnect your device and your device should now be detected by Windows. COPY YOUR DATA. I’ve tried cloning this drive but Acronis True Image won’t recognize it so we’ll just go down the old route and copy the data as is. As you can see, the data inside are just plain files so you can safely move them around, just don’t rename or delete anything unless you know what you’re doing. If you’re just moving data, just copy everything so you still have data on your old drive and just delete after once you can confirm everything works. Enable XBOX Mode. Enable XBOX mode the same way as above and again, safely remove and eject your drive after. You can confirm this by reconnecting your drive and viewing the tool and it should show up as pictured above. Once everything’s done you can now proceed using your new storage device on your XBOX One. Copying and moving your XBOX One data to another drive is perfectly legal and doesn’t violate Microsoft TOS. If you’re having trouble getting your new drive recognized, just go to All Settings > Storage and then select the new drive as the default installation storage. This procedure doesn’t enable piracy and you will still need a licensed copy of the game to play. You can also refer to the same tutorial by the creator of the tool in this post. My favorite animal is the scapegoat. This method caused my computer to crash, and all content from old drive is gone. When I plug back into computer I hear a detection sound but no drive letter appears. Followed instructions to a Tee. Oh well. They have forgotten to say this written by the developer: This application scans and makes modifications to the MBR of the drive. I take no responsibility for any damage done to the device or loss of data caused by utilizing this application. This has been tested on only a handful of drives; so there could be issues. Use at your own risk. How to manage storage on Xbox One. The main things that take up space on Xbox One are games and apps. If your Xbox fills up, make space by uninstalling stuff you're not using. Any data for your games and apps (preferences, saved games) syncs online when you sign in to Xbox Live. So when you reinstall a deleted game or app, your saved data comes right back with it. Frequently asked questions. Xbox One comes with either a 500-gigabyte (GB) or 1-terabyte (TB) internal hard drive. Most of this space is available for games and apps, though some is reserved for saved games, console software, and other system functions. When you’re signed in to Xbox Live, personal data for your games and apps gets stored on your Xbox and online. That way, you don’t lose game position when you play at a friend’s house or get a new Xbox. Note A regular connection to Xbox Live is required to keep your data in sync. Playing offline could put your online data out of sync. Your data refreshes every time you connect to Xbox Live. Go to your games & apps: From Home , select My games & apps . At left side, a meter shows space used and total free space. Note Your Xbox uses some storage for system files, so even with no games installed, you won’t see the full 500 GB or 1 TB free. To use external storage with Xbox One games and apps, your hard drive must: When you first connect, Xbox will prompt you to format your device. You can use it for Xbox games and apps, or for personal media such as pictures, music, and video. (Xbox will treat devices that don’t meet the above requirements as media storage.) Note Xbox will recognize only two external drives at one time. If you cancel formatting when you connect a storage device, you can set it up later: Open the guide and select System > Settings > System > Storage . Select your device, and then select Format for games & apps . Install the Media Player app from the Store. In Media Player, you’ll see your external USB drive. Select it, then choose something to play. To manage storage at the device level, open the guide and select System > Settings > System > Storage . To manage storage at the game or app level, go to Home and select My games & apps . Focus on a game or app, press the Menu button on your controller, then select Manage . One more step.
