Get started building apps for the Universal Windows Platform (UWP) on Xbox One.
UWP on Xbox One supports developing both apps and games. You don't have to be part of a developer program to experiment, create, and test games or apps on Xbox. All you need is a developer account on Windows Dev Center. When you are ready to publish and sell games on Xbox One or take advantage of Xbox Live on Windows 10, you need to join the Xbox Live Creators Program or be an ID@Xbox developer. If you plan to be an ID@Xbox developer, we recommend applying to the program first before registering for a developer account. For more info, see Developer program overview.

Xbox One Hard Drive Replacement.
Upper Case 14 steps Upper Metal Case 5 steps Hard Drive Assembly 2 steps Hard Drive 3 steps.
Introduction.
Follow this guide to remove the hard drive from your Xbox One, and follow it in reverse to install a new drive.
Your Xbox One console is not capable of formatting a replacement hard drive for use as the main drive.
Before you install your replacement drive, you will need to reformat the drive in a computer and install the necessary software, following this technique:
Parts.
Video Overview.
Step 1 Upper Case.
To open your Xbox, you're going to have to cut or peel up this tamper-evident tape. This will probably void your warranty. Have fun!
In the United States the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act of 1975 is a Federal Law that states that stickers and clauses are illegal. It says you can open your electronics without voiding the warranty, regardless of what language of that warranty says.
Use a plastic opening tool to pry up and remove the plastic vent that surrounds the side USB port.
The vent is fairly flexible, and held in place with weak plastic clips—start prying from the back and peel it out.
There is a small plastic tab that reinforces the front corner of the Xbox.
Slide the tab straight back and remove it.
Do u sell that plastic tag I need it.
Here is What's Stated in Step-3 : (There is a small plastic tab that reinforces the front corner of the Xbox.) Actually, the "Tab" is NOT SMALL at all. See the Picture: The "TAB" is the Piece that this Person has their Thumb on, is the Tab that you NEED TO SLIDE TOWARDS THE "REAR" of the Unit. You will be able to tell How this Large Tab Holds the Top and the Bottom Case Covers together. Take Note how to Replace this tab back where it Belongs, when you are putting the Case Covers back together. Hope that this comment will help you. 6-29-2017.
Insert the flat end of a spudger between the upper and lower case where they meet at the rear of the side vent opening.
There is a strong plastic clip connecting the two case halves (the first of many), so you'll need to use quite a bit of force.
Leave the spudger in place until you open the case completely. The clips are very springy and may cause the case to snap shut while you're working.
The interface between the upper and lower cases is secured by several clips along the rear and remaining side of the Xbox.
Insert a plastic opening tool between the upper and lower case to separate the clip over the rear vent.
Keep moving along the rear of the Xbox, prying up clips.
Make sure the spudger stays in its blocking position—even if the case opens up enough for the spudger to fall out, the remaining clips are springy and may pull the case completely shut. Keep the spudger in the gap to protect your progress.
Keep popping clips. It may help to slide the plastic opening tool across the clips.
By the time you get to the far edge of the rear case, the top case should be ready to come off. If not, run your plastic opening tool around the corner and pop the clips along the side without the USB port.
Starting with the spudger you left in the crack, pry the upper case up to free the last few clips.
Use a plastic opening tool to pop any straggler clips that weren't freed.
Do not try to remove the upper case yet, as it is still connected by the front panel button cable.
Lift the upper case slightly and shift it to give access to the front panel board.
The front button cable has a unique ZIF connector—pay attention to the next few steps to safely disconnect it.
Use tweezers to lift the plastic retaining loop over the connector on the board.
Use the tip of a spudger to push the connector's locking tab toward the cable to unlatch it.
Use tweezers to pull the cable straight out of the connector on the board.
Remove the upper case.
Step 11 Reassembly Instructions.
The next 4 steps are directions for reassembly. Skip them to continue with disassembly.
Use the flat end of a spudger to free the clips securing the front panel to the upper case.
Remove the front panel from the rest of the upper case.
Replace the top part of the upper case.
Line up the clips and press firmly to re-seat them around the perimeter.
Support the front panel near the front of the Xbox.
Use tweezers to replace the front button cable in its ZIF socket.
Use the flat end of a spudger to push the ZIF lock to the left to secure the cable.
The lower edge of the front panel has plastic hooks that interlock with plastic hooks on the front edge of the lower case.
With the front panel at a 45 degree angle, interlock its plastic hooks with those in the lower case.
Push the top of the front panel into the Xbox, like closing a mailbox. Press firmly so that the clips securing the front panel to the upper case lock securely.
Step 15 Upper Metal Case.
Gently pull up on the speaker cable connector to disconnect it from the front panel board.
Be careful to pull up on the cable's connector and not the connector on the board. It's pretty flimsy and you might accidentally pull it off the board entirely.
Use the flat end of a spudger to disconnect the antenna cable from the front panel board.
Remove the two 9.5 mm T9 Torx screws from the WI-Fi board.
Lift the Wi-Fi board straight up from its socket in the upper metal case.
Leaving the Wi-Fi board antenna cable in place, move the Wi-Fi board aside, exposing the screw labeled "C3" that was beneath it.
Remove the eight 65 mm Torx T10 screws from the top of the upper metal case.
Two of the 8 were stripped even before attempting to remove….ugggh.
Lift—but do not remove—the upper metal case.
The Wi-Fi board interconnect cable connects the upper metal case to the motherboard.
Disconnect the Wi-FI board interconnect cable from the motherboard.
Remove the upper metal case.
Step 20 Hard Drive Assembly.
Disconnect the hard drive SATA power and data cables from the motherboard.
I found that it is not necessary to take out the hard drive in order to remove the front panel module. If you can lift the whole metal enclosure a little to get to the right most torx screw, then you do not need to move the hard drive.
Lift and remove the hard drive tray from the Xbox.
Step 22 Hard Drive.
Remove the four 8.5 mm T10 Torx screws securing the hard drive assembly to the hard drive tray.
Lift the hard drive and connector assembly straight off of the tray.
For reassembly, note that the connector assembly has two small plastic posts that fit into alignment holes in the tray. Be sure to fit the posts into the holes.
Unplug the SATA connector block from the hard drive.
Uses clonezilla disk to disk from USB and advance mode only thing to change is write grub to destination drive you want that unchecked everything else is fine for replacing with same size hard drive.
To reassemble your device, follow these instructions in reverse order.

I've managed to open my Xbox one, tested the hard drive and it has failed (error scanned and it's 90% bad sectors). I've got a new harddrive for it, but can't find where to get the correct software for it/ how it needs to be formatted. You mention this info at the start of this repair but cant see a link to the software.
If there are no links, would cloning another xbox one harddrive work as a repair?
Ah, Sorted now. I managed to clone another hard drive. This doesn't work right off you still need to apply an update via a pend rive. But once this is done, the hard drive does pick up and work.
What Hard Drive did You Clone? My Hard Drive failed Aswell.
Please see my Xbox One HDD Replacement Wiki to solve your issue (scroll to very bottom): http://jw0914.github.io/Wikis/
I haven't done this yet but I, like most other people won't want to lose any saved games etc. How do I do an exact copy from the current HDD to the SSD I'm putting in? Thanks!
how do you make the copy from HD to SSD?
You'd need to make a WIM of Partition 2 (User Content). I'm not sure about pictures/videos, but I would imagine they'd be redownloaded once you sync your Xbox Live account by logging in, just like everything else (licenses, games, etc.). You'd have to verify that however.
I go over how to create WIMs of the partitions in the Xbox One HDD Replacement wiki I wrote, which can be found on my GitHub (scroll to very bottom): http://jw0914.github.io/Wikis/
Could anyone complete the guide by explaining how to image a drive or any other special actions that need to be taken to get things up and running? (links if needed)

Does the Xbox One accept any standard SATA II hard drive? Or does the OS place restrictions on certain hard drive models/specs?
I'd just like some direct confirmation on the matter. I get varying answers on Google, mostly outdated from many months ago.
I have used hard drives other than the OEM ones with great success. The issue comes with using a 1TB drive. The original script from my experience doesn't accurately produce a working 1TB drive compatible with the newer firmwares and always leads to E203 or E204. I was able to modify the scripts and the methods and can successfully use any 500GB or 1TB drive. On a side note you don't need to copy anything from the original drive unless the console is in the preview program; even then you only need the contents of the System Update partition nothing else. Just format/prep the drive on PC, run the correct OSUDT from Microsoft then restore to factory once you see the dash.
So what exact files do you need to boot a new xbox one hdd, and where do I find them?
It depends on if the the console is in the preview program or if the firmware is corrupt.
If the console is on standard firmware then you don't need anything off the old hard drive. Simply format a hard drive and put it in the console and use the correct OSUDT from Microsoft. When complete, factory restore the console. If the console is in preview or corrupted; format a hard drive and copy the contents of the System Update partition (NOT System Update 2) to the new hard drive. Then simply use the reset USB files from Microsoft.
If for whatever reason you aren't sure which OSUDT to use you can always copy the System Update partition contents from the old drive and then use the reset USB. During the initial setup it will download and install the relevant update.
So my xbox got corrupted and so I am trying to just redownload the os, what format do is use? ntfs? I don't need any of the data from the corrupted hdd. Do I use the offline system update file that is named "$system update" and only have that on my hdd when i reinstall it? Does it really matter which OSUDT I put on it because I have no clue what it was running before it crashed. Thanks for any help.
You'll need to format the new drive using linux (any live distro should do) using the scripts mentioned in the video, available on github just google "xboxonehdd". Just follow the video at the top of the guide to format; run mkxboxfs.sh and then run xboxonehdd.py.
OSUDT does matter. If you use the wrong one it will give you an E101 error. If you can remember if you have the newer windows 10 layout (sidebar on the left) use OSUDT2 otherwise use OSUDT3. If you don't want to do that just or your console is in the preview program copy the entire contents of the System Update partition from the corrupt drive to the System Update partition of the new drive and use the RESET files not any of the OSUDTs. OSUDT and RESET files should only ever be put on a USB not the hard drive as the files are not the same.
Will I be able to format this using windows 10? Could I clone the previous drive's partitions, delete all of the partitions then just only have the update file and A and B on it?
And I have zero knowledge of linux, but if I have to use it, is it possible to boot it from a flash drive or something?
You could format it with windows as long as you can create partitions at the correct starting sectors and of the correct sizes. You would also want to be able to GUIDs of the partitions. Easiest thing is to download Ubuntu from their site. Create a Bootable Live USB using the installer they provide. Boot into linux, download the scripts from github and run them with terminal. Linux knowledge needed is minimal providing you know how to change directory in a windows command prompt. All commands should be in the video at the top.
Hello can provide folders A and B?
No as the contents of the A and B folders are different for each system update so you would need the folders for your consoles firmware version. Unless the console is in the preview program just leave the whole drive blank and install the OSUDT and it will create the correct files/folders during installation.
My system is stuck on the latest update and I am getting the E101 errors with any of the OSUDT versions. Following various posts, I formatted the "System Update" partition on the hard drive but I must not have copied the A and B folders over correctly to my computer because I cannot locate them. In an attempt of hope, I have recreated new (but empty) A and B folders and added the updater.xvd file to the partition. If I run the process again with the OSUDT2 from a flash drive, will the Xbox update put the necessary files in the A and B folders and finally update the system?
Please see my reply to Genesis730.
FIXED!! thanks so much for this guide.
So, I had the preview software and green screen of death for an hour followed by error message screen.
read all your posts above. thanks to all!
what I did was connect the hard drive to the laptop and format each partition (lost all my games but whatever can redownlaod) BUT for the system update partition I followed the advice above and copied the A and B folder and pasted them back after the format.
So then I put the drive back in and used the usb factory restore method and boom!
The reason I went through all this is that the usb diagnostic tool factory restore was not working AT ALL even after much help from Microsoft support. All they could say after exhausting all options was return it and get it fixed/replaced but I don't live in the US so would have been a pain.
MrStubbly, would you care to share your modified script that does work for a 1TB+ drive. I have had success in the past but am currently not getting anything to work.
I have formatted and setup my drive like this:
- Formatted drive in Disks.
- Ran python script (sudo python ./xboxonehdd.py sdX)
- Ran sudo bash command.
- Added files from my working OG System Update partition (Contents of Folder A, Folder B, & updater.xvd)
- Ran python script again (sudo python ./xboxonehdd.py sdX, and confirmed with 'yes')
- Copied OSUDT2 (And OSUDT3 as well. I assumed it should be OSUDT2, since I have the newer Win10 tile based home screen but tested both for S&G.)
- Powered off my XBOX, unplugged it for about 15sec, plugged it back in, held both BIND & EJECT before powering on the system and continued to hold until I get a notification sound.
The end result of any test is that I get the E101 error.
Any further advise or help you, or anyone, could provide would be great! Thanks.
It seems all tutorials miss a few things. the issue you're having is due to how the OS rebuild occurs. When the rebuild occurs, Windows will wipe and repartition the HDD if it's partition structure is different than the HDD it shipped with, which wipes the rebuild files, thus a 101 error is received.
Because no tutorial gives accurate instructions on how to rebuild the OS, I created a wiki that can be found on my GitHub (scroll to very bottom): http://jw0914.github.io/Wikis/
I can't get this formatting to work! I wish there could be a correct video guide to this problem. (Using a 1tb hard drive)
So if I'm on the preview program and I im trying to setup up a brand new hard drive(because my existing one died) what should be the process. also when i do everything . i've turned on the xbox one and get nothing just a black screen. is it possible i've done everything right and i just need to reset the video settings?
My hard disk is damaged and I can't access any file. Is there something that I can do?
The statement in the OP "Your Xbox One console is not capable of formatting a replacement hard drive for use as the main drive." is factually inaccurate.
The Xbox One stores the EFI boot partition and Recovery partition (containing WinRE) on the NAND flash, as well as most likely as vhd containing cli programs and scripts. Provided the GPT header has been modified in Linux prior to installation into the XB1, the XB1 will auto partition and format the HDD to the original partition layout of the original HDD that shipped with the unit.
If it shipped with a 500GB HDD, and one installs a 1 or 2TB HDD without utilizing a separate script written by Juvenal1 on GitHub, the partition layout will utilize 465GB for the 5 partitions with a 465GB unallocated space after partition 5.
Will a SAS drive work as a replacement?
First of all, thanks a lot for the guide.
I have an Xbox one with the hard drive with errors because of a bad update, I tried all the stupid solutions from Microsoft and none work. So I am going to change the hard drive, My question is: A friend has an Xbox one that is not working because of other problems, but the hard drive works perfectly, so I would like to know if I can put the hard drive from the Xbox One from my friend into my Xbox One with the failing hard drive and if it would work right away.
Thanks for the help.
Hello I am in a preview program xbox one. My internal hard drive broke, replaced it with a new but not working no operating system.

I'm a Xbox One regular owner on preview program. I have a question.! I dont have any files from the System Update Partition to recover my console from those EXXX errors.
What I know is that I have a friend who has a Xbox One S on the latest Preview , working perfectly.
Can I copy those files from his Xbox to mine? is there any difference between the files of a Xbox One S.

I wrote a guide with a newer / easier method to clone a drive: https://adcurtin.wordpress.com/2016/11/0.
Just follow your guide and work well. Thank you.
Replace the internet WD 500 GB with SEAGATE ST95005620AS 500GB and right now playing FF XV :P.
i attempted the clonezilla method as described and receiving errors on the source disk that its scheduled for a check or shutdown uncleanly. any suggestions?
i tried the clonzilla method and i get the failed to create a partition table on this disk. please help if any info.
Can anybody tell me which hard disk to buy for my xbox one as a replacement?
My stock XB1 HDD is a Samsung 1TB. And I tried the 500GB HGST HDD which pulled out from my PS4, it also work. And I upgrade it to the Seagate Firecuda 2TB SSHD. That also work flawlessly.
In the video it says that you can no longer do this after the December update. Is this still the case? Can I not upgrade the HD anymore?
Don't worry, you can, I just did that yesterday with the most up to date dashboard.
half assed guide.
Hi I need help, I mistakenly formated my original Xbox one hard disk and I lost everything, please can anyone email me his system update file so I can clone a new hard disk for it?
My email is erickekesi3@gmail.com.
No need, I just did the upgrade without any files from the old HDD.
I suggest you do the following.
1) hold down eject + bind buttons, tap the power button to boot (keep holding both eject and blind button) until heard the 2nd boot sound effect.
2) choose factory reset in the diagnostic manual. After reboot, shut down.
3) use the Windows script to format the HDD. No need to copy anything on it. I tried it myself. 100% sure no need those folder A, folder B. the HDD can be 100% clean.
4) go to the Xbox support webpage and follow the steps about boot with error E205. It will lead you to the download the correct OSU.
5) format a USB drive to NTFS.
6) unzip the OSU and copy that folder (with all files inside) to the USB drive root folder.
7) install the new HDD.
8) plugin the USB drive and Ethernet cable.
9) hold down eject + bind buttons to boot until the system update start.
After step 9, your machine should go back to the init state with the new HDD.
Just finished the 2TB SSHD upgrade base on this guide. However, step 4-7 is hard. With some research, I found that 's actually much easier to open up the XB1 by pressing the correct "pressure point" to unlock the clip. Just press the correct position, hear the "click" sound, then move on to the next clip. Apart from that, this guide is good. I cannot remove the wifi board connector (step 19) because it's very firm, and I don't want to apply hard force on it. But it won't affect the HDD swap, I can just open the top metal with the cable still connected and take out the HDD.
I highly suggest that swap the HDD, install only the front cover and connect ALL cables (zero screw required) to do a boot test. Only reassembly the XB1 if it can function normally. Otherwise, there will lots of work to take the HDD out and re-format it again.
Apart from Linux, there is a script for Windows to format the HDD, and I do everything via a virtual machine., extremely handy.
I have been trying for several days and in many ways and all without success, your informed process, I am hitting this button, I already achieved a triumph the console created partitions with 2tb and left 1600gb for games, before it formatted my 2tb hd as if It was 500gb and left the %#*@ 362gb, I will continue to try, I will not give up, my console is open for 10 days, I am from Brazil and I spent money to get a 2tb firecuda, and it will not be now that I will give up. Thanks.
Hello I followed the guide with a new hdd after update failed on old hdd. When I placed clean hdd in xbox with folders a and b with updater. The xbox remembers it's progress in update and fails in same place any help would be great.
The new fall release has caused many XB1’s to fail as well as 2 of mine. I’ve tried a brand new clean drive with no resolution. Gets stuck @ 58% and goes back into error code 100. Going to try a few more things and if it does in fact work, I’ll be updating my original post with a working solution.
So I tried to swap a hard drive from an Xbox one to an Xbox one S. The hard drive from the original Xbox one had a ton of games that weren't mine (I bought the Xbox from someone else with 60 games downloaded on it, minus all of my games that I had already owned). Anyways, I swapped them over no problem but now neither console will load entirely. I get the booting up xbox screen for 5-10 minutes then it loads to a blank screen. I can hear audio and I can turn it on and off via the controller but the video output seems to not be working right. (Even after swapped the hard drives back to their original consoles). Am I screwed?
This is a massive disadvantage to the ps4, on an x box one you have to open the hole console and that voids your warranty.

Использование сенсора Xbox One Kinect с консолью Xbox One S или Xbox One X.
Xbox One X.
Примечание. Сенсор Xbox 360 Kinect несовместим с Xbox One.
Xbox One X.

The best Xbox One external hard drives.
Beef up your gaming box's storage.
Once again your Xbox One hard drive is full of games again and another poor title is up for the chop. Surely you just cleared this? If deleting games is now a weekly or monthly occurrence, you need a new Xbox One hard drive. Even a 1TB drive now seems to just be a little too small for all the games you want to store in there at once. The good news is that upgrading is ridiculously easy and you don't even have to touch a screwdriver to give yourself stacks of space on your Xbox One or Xbox One X. External hard drives are your new best friend and there's a stack of excellent options to choose from. But which is the best Xbox One hard drive?
Time for an Xbox One S?
The Xbox One's USB 3.0 ports mean you can plug in some pretty fast-moving drives, and you can always buy an enclosure and fill it with a loose drive if you don't wan't to have to use just the traditional portable USB. TL:DR? If you're looking for more space, you've come to the right place. Let's check out the best Xbox One external hard drives. Oh, and if you're looking for more games to fill up your new purchase, check out our best Xbox One games.
1. Toshiba 1TB Canvio Basics.
A no-brainer to double your original Xbox One HDD.
This slimline external drive is both a bit of a bargain and big enough to either double or triple your Xbox One’s storage capacity, depending on your console’s starting point. It will sit unobtrusively next to your Xbox One and deliver a full 1TB of extra game storage across the speedy USB 3.0 interface for a great price.
2. Western Digital 2TB My Passport Ultra.
Heaps of storage at a great price.
Western Digital is probably the biggest name in traditional spinning platter hard drive storage, and its My Passport Ultra is a massive external drive in capacity only. Despite the fact you can get up to 3TB of storage the device itself is pleasingly diminutive and comes in a range of shades. Pro-tip: berry is the cheapest option. The 2TB drive though is probably the best-value version for Xbox One gamers.
3. Seagate 2TB/4TB Xbox One Game Drive.
Go big (and official)
Coming in two sizes and a stylish white Xbox One Special Edition, Seagate's Game Drive makes a slick addition to your under TV set up. Once again, all you have to do it plug in and play and the fact that there's a 4TB version available means you'll just be downloading games because you can, instead of asking yourself if you'll ever play them. Go on, be decadent.
4. Seagate Expansion 5TB.
For when you never want to run out of space.
If you never want to worry about storage ever again, look no further than Seagate's 5TB affair. With USB 3.0 it's up to speed in terms of transfer rates and did we mention that it's 5TB? It's not going to win any awards in terms of style (it's a big box that weighs 948g) and you'll need to plug it in but it definitely gets the job done in terms of storage. You're going to end up just downloading Games with Gold because you can.
5. Seagate 1TB SSHD.
A speedy budget DIY option if you're happy to buy a caddy.
There are a couple of options if you’re going for a do-it-yourself drive - this Seagate SSHD is a hybrid of traditional spinning platters and solid state storage giving you a large amount of space for a good price with a bit of a speed boost thanks to a small cache of SSD-like storage. You will though need either a USB 3.0 caddy to house it, if you want a neat finish, or a simple USB 3.0 to SATA adapter if you don’t mind the bare hardware aesthetic.
6. Samsung 500GB 850 EVO.
The best DIY SSD solution.
The other option is to go for performance and use an SSD for your external storage. Samsung is the current king of the SSD world and its 850 EVO drive is a great example of the company’s ability to balance performance and price. You are sacrificing capacity for speed - though you can spend more on 1TB or 2TB options - but if game load times are currently getting you down an SSD will help. Remember you'll also need a USB 3.0 caddy for this one too.

Works extremely well. BUT DVR CANCELLED.
I bought an Xbox and this tuner simply for the DVR functionality that was promised. Now, I'm just disappointed. Tuner itself works very well. But, I could just hook up an antenna to my TV and not have paid for this if I knew the DVR functionality would be cancelled!

Tuner is Great, Buy Your Own Antenna.
I've got this tuner hooked up to my Xbox One and it integrates perfectly with the UI. However, the Antenna which comes with it is garbage and cannot hold a signal. I've tried moving it around different parts of my house and it will either catch a spotty signal or no signal at all. The nice thing is that you can get a traditional pair of rabbit ears which will work with the co-ax input on the tuner, which get MUCH better reception. I've got my rabbit ears hiding behind my TV and they work great, no eyesore whatsoever. Overall, this Tuner is great, but try buying it at a discount, because you're going to need to buy a stronger antenna than the one which is included.

Lasted 2.25 Years.
Bought it 8/5/2017 and it died on 11/30/2017. Lasted just over 2 years. 5 Stars when it works. 3 stars because it died after 2 years. TV guide interface for the Xbox One TV Tuner is phenomenal. Get the media remote too. Great for cord cutters (when it works).
Works great!
When I first bought this XBOX ONE would limit you to your postal code, which for people in Toronto doesn't work well, because we get US channels. After the update, we get all the major US networks and Canadian networks.
easy to install. came with everything ,cable, antenna, hdmi connector.
Great Product for Xbox One.
Great product for Xbox One to watch OTA channels!!
Good Tuner but now with no DVR it's pointless.
I specifically bought this in hopes of using it with the new DVR function that was promised. Now that the function is not coming to XBONE it's basically useless. Wish I could have my money back.
Nice! glad I finally decided to get this.
I got this on sale for about 30$ so it's good that I waited to buy it. I heard from several sources that I can get it to work on PC, and with a few extra steps like installing the software and set up, it worked; though the antenna that comes with this thing is useless. I just have it hooked up with a coaxial cable and I get clear, near HD quality, YMMV based on the resolution of your monitor and graphics driver/settings. But overall this device work as intended and as far as I know, it is the most reliable product that allows you to watch tv on your computer or Xbox One.
Great feature, but useless without DVR function.
When MS scrapped the DVR function, the novelty of the tuner decreased by about 90%. Which is probably why the price has also decreased. For those who use strict OTA, get a TiVo. No monthly fee, and it does OTA and DVR.
Useless now that no DVR software being developed.
I am very disappointed. Only purchased this package because Microsoft said they were developing and Xbox one DVR app. Now they announce they are not. Will be selling this as well as my Xbox One as I was using it more for entertainment than games. I wanted to cut my cable cord. But instead will have to cut my loses and Xbox one as well.

Einleitung.
Today a new Xbox lands in our inbox, and that's a rare thing—though not as rare as it used to be. What makes the new Xbox One S a worthy mid-cycle update to Microsoft's console? Let's tear down this surprisingly slimmer , possibly speedier , appreciably sassier Xbox One and find out. Game on!
This teardown season is just getting started—add us on Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter and never miss a beat.
Dieser Teardown ist keine Reparaturanleitung. Um dein Xbox One S zu reparieren, verwende unsere Fehlerbehebungsseite.
Schritt 1 Xbox One S Teardown.
You'd expect some differences from the Day One Edition Xbox One we tore down way back in 2013, and you'd be right. Here's what we know:
Spec-bumped GPU supporting HDR10 along with the same AMD "Jaguar" 8-core SoC found in the original Xbox One.
2 TB of storage (500 GB and 1 TB configurations are coming)
HDMI 2.0a connectivity with support for 4K video at 60 Hz.
Internal power supply.
Fancy vertical stand (2 TB model only)
Redesigned Xbox Wireless Controller.
Etched into the starboard side of the Xbox One S, we find a cute reminder that this console still hails from the other tech capital of the West Coast: "Hello from Seattle," home of the Microsoft brigade.
Moving right along, we discover the Xbox One S is now identified as Model 1681.
In a design decision that takes us back to consoles of old, this One features mechanical buttons in lieu of capacitive ones.
Gamers with a toddler or wet-nosed pet know the pain of the ultra-sensitive power button on the original Xbox One.
Around back, under the many vent holes we find:
HDMI out (left) and in (right)
Two USB 3.0 ports (in addition to the one on the front)
IR output, optical audio, and Ethernet ports.
What about my Kinect, you ask? You can apply for a "free" Kinect USB adapter—provided you already own a Kinect, an original Xbox One, and the Xbox One S.
Those who buy a Kinect to go with their Xbox One S will have to purchase the $40 adapter separately.
Our first act of teardown: tamper evident sticker removal. But no screws in sight, just the back of an immobile plastic clip. Bummer.
We take a moment to reminisce about our old Xbox 360 Opening Tool, but decide our trusted iFixit Opening Tool would be of more use here.
Make that opening tools —because popping that plastic "security" nub takes a little extra oomph .
Do we like security clips? Not in a box. Not with a fox. Not in a house. Not with a mouse. We do not like them here nor there; we do not like them anywhere.
After some intense prying, we successfully remove the bottom cover, revealing a metal interior case.
These clips may be tough at first, but plastic is bound to bend or break, unlike a reusable screw. The next time you open your One S it may not clip back together.
I solved this problem with small white snap clips that you would use to hold auto plastic together.
Some nostalgic green screws labeled F (for first?) free the primary assembly from the upper case.
Remember when Xbox was black and green and not a Destiny bundle PS4?
This One, more streamlined than its predecessor, doesn't feature any weird, afterthought components left out in the cold.
All that's left in the PC/ABS case are some button covers and Sabic and Samsung logos—probably the plastic suppliers.
Okay, is it just the teardown giddiness, or does this case vaguely resemble a Star Destroyer hangar?
Lifting one metal midbody panel reveals a beautiful sight: such nice, sleek components that we are momentarily inclined to keep the cover off forever.
Somebody call the Jackson 5, 'cause identifying these numbered and labeled components is easy as 01-02-03 (and 04).
But wait—who's that we spy?
Master Chief has arrived on a new world, this time to protect the optical disc drive bracket. Hopefully the Flood keeps out of this drive for good.
Much like the RF board on the Xbox One, the front panel board of the Xbox One S detaches outward from the lower case.
With the front panel board's EMI shield removed, we quickly spy a lone IC and some of its friends:
MediaTek MT7632TUN (Likely a variation of MT7632 2x2 802.11n + Bluetooth 4.0 Module)
Sync switch for wireless controllers.
Any chance ifixit will be supplying this board as is the case with the Xbox One version? I need one for. reasons.
The horror, it's just a cut-cost version from the original. No tactile buttons because the ISD chip is missing. No power-up tunes or speaker for the same reason. The shielded connector is replaced by a cheap generic one.
Cheap Mediatek radios instead of Broadcom or Marvell.
Oh, and they have Apple complex, now using a black PCB.
Next up on the teardown chopping block is the Wi-Fi board. After removing a few Torx screws, it comes quietly just like the front panel board before it.
This is a nice incremental improvement over its location in the previous Xbox One—it makes for one less step to open the inner metal case.
Wi-Fi is handled by a MediaTek MT7612UN (Likely a variation of MT7612U 2x2 802.11ac Wi-Fi Module)
At this point, component removal is a bit of a hunt, so we extract some screws and see which component is freed first.
Oddly enough, despite being labeled 04, the hard drive is the first component out.
The labels are likely numbered according to assembly, rather than the disassembly.
We find a Samsung Seagate Spinpoint M9T ST2000LM003 2 TB 5400 RPM with 32 MB Cache SATA III 6.0 Gb/s hard drive. Try saying that ten times fast.
Sadly, hard drive replacements still void the warranty, and need some tricky formatting.
The One S packs a sweet SATA III drive, but it may still be using the SATA II interface of the original Xbox One. You can always add an external hard drive though, thanks Microsoft!
can you change it to a SSD tho?
Is this hard drive any different than the one in the original?
would love to know the answer if this drive is any better than the original. with the sata 3 port, i was almost sure the drive would be comparable to the hd in the elite.
I have successfully changed the hard drive to ssd in mine.
what is "may" still be using SATA II interface, is it SATA II or III?
Schritt 10.
The next to go is number two : the optical drive— too easy! Master Chief is of course along for the ride.
Here we have the artist formally known as a BD-ROM drive, courtesy of Philips and Lite-On Digital Solutions. The DG-6M5S model found in the Xbox One S is slightly different from the DG-6M1S found in the Xbox One, with the biggest upgrade being support for BD-UHD.
We also snag a couple rubber bumpers. These probably help keep the high-speed optical drive from rattling us off our rockers.
Schritt 11.
Now we come to the One S's hat trick (a.k.a. #03)—a smaller, newly-fanless, neatly-integrated power supply. Gone is that dangling anchor of yore.
An external power supply is much easier to replace than an internal one. So lets hope Microsoft did their homework to mitigate that need!
This power supply also accepts 100-240 V inputs, meaning you can take it pretty much anywhere there's a socket. Take that, Xbox One!
The power supply connects with what PC gamers will instantly recognize as a perfectly ordinary, 6-pin PCIe connector.
Is this USA version? All Xbox One S has accepts universal voltage 100-240?
Does Xbox One S from USA supports 100-240 V?
So if I buy an European version I can use it in US without any trouble or add-on needed?
Is there a way to reset this manually. Mine won't turn on after I plugged it into a surge protector. Xbox support says they won't take it back due to tampering.
Schritt 12.
Things are heating up in the teardown room, but we can't extract the "Thermal System" just yet. So we lift the whole dang motherboard assembly out of the metal casing.
A springy, X-shaped bracket secures the heat sink to the motherboard—a signature part we've seen in every Xbox since the original 360.
The "X" is a bit fussy and takes some muscle, but some practiced prying with a flathead driver saves the day.
Schritt 13.
With the component countdown nearly complete, it's time to extract part number 01: the thermal system.
Out comes the system's single 120 mm fan—looking much like a PC case fan, but with some sculpting that's unique to the Xbox One's design.
The standard Xbox One had a similarly robust cooling setup, possibly designed to avoid a repeat of the Xbox 360's billion dollar problem.
The backup for the One S's biggest fan is an impressive aluminum heat sink and copper heat pipe set. Cool.
For the size of the case that is one big heatsink and fan. Hopefully it allows the One S to operate fairly quietly. It's kind of ridiculous how much smaller the PS4 compared to the original Xbox One especially when you factor in the external power supply, but the PS4 does run very hot and loud compared to the One.
That's the trade off. The larger the fan, the lower the RPM's needed. PS4's fan is a side venting fan, which is loud as !&&*.
Is the heatsink the same as the one found in the original xbone?? because if it is then can't they run the fan at an even slower speed due to the decreased heat output of the new chip??
We can see that it has 4 PINs = PWM fan, means that they can run at slower speed based on selected sensors. However, sensors can be temperature of the board or processor or any other.
The 'new' chip doesn't run hotter. I'ts made using a smaller process (14nm instead of 20something I believe) which lets it run cooler, even with the 7% bump to the GPU.
The fan is actually larger than the original. 112mm compared to 120mm.
The problem with the PS4 is it might be thin but its really too deep. I find it really hard to fit on my shelf and I would have preferred it to be twice as tall and an inch or too less deep. It would also have helped fit a larger fan I expect.
I didn't like the original Xbox One especially the external PSU, but it looks like the S is a very nice refined design.
Can someone tell me the thickness of the fan? I know its 120mm wide, but I want to try to replace it with a PC fan with some modding. also, I see its a PWM 4-pin fan, which is good, but will it run any old fan?
Does anyone know if there is a voltage limit to the fans power socket?
Schritt 14.
Now on to our One true love, chips!
X949211-001 DG4001FYG87IA (Includes 1.75 GHz AMD "Jaguar" 8-core CPU + overclocked 914 MHz AMD Radeon Graphics GPU)
16 x Samsung SEC 549 K4W4G1646E-BC1A 4 Gb (512 MB) "gDDR3" SDRAM (total of 16 x 512 MB = 8 GB)
X861949-005 T6WD5XBG-0003 Southbridge.
Toshiba THGBMFG6C1LBAIL 8 GB eMMC NAND Flash.
ON Semiconductor NCP4205 GASUY1614 (Likely an iteration of the NCP4204 GAC1328G Integrated Power Control IC found in the Xbox One)
Texas Instruments SN75DP159 6 Gb/s DP++ to HDMI Retimer.
SAMSUNG K4W4G1646E-BC1A should be GDDR3 not DDR3.
You're right! Thanks. We've updated the step and added a link to Samsung's product guide with additional info on that chip.
Any chance you could give a measurement of the dimensions of the "X949211-001 DG4001FYG87IA "? I'm trying to get a good idea of how big the shrink was (the last one was 363 mm2). I'm hoping the changes didn't add many transistors since I do already have a source for that info on the original (I think it was.
5 billion though obviously there's some rounding).
Never mind, Eurogamer has not measured it at 240mm2. Thank you anyway.
Do you know what this piece is called? PxD637 and where can i find it?
What is the dimensions of the board itself.
Schritt 15.
And on the back of the motherboard. is not much really.
Realtek RTL8111HM (Likely an iteration of the RTL8111 gigabit Ethernet Controller)
Oh and that handy front-side USB port—which is on the opposite end and opposite side from its friends, poor guy.
I looking for number of chip on place U6U1 left corner. Can I have full number, please ? Thank you.
Schritt 16.
Now on to the controller!
While we are disappointed by the lack of visible screws, we will celebrate a small concession: the batteries are still user-replaceable! (Looking at you, DualShock 4).
Using our recent console expertise, we bust out the trusty opening tools and pop off some white paneling, finding some sneaky Torx security screws. Boo.
Not only that, but a final Torx security screw is hiding under the battery compartment sticker. Double boo.
But hey, still better than Pentalobes.
Schritt 17.
Popping off those plastic panels reveals what looks like a neat little assembly, complete with four haptic feedback motors.
But once we start to extract the beast, we see the truth: Unless you're handy with a soldering iron, this is an all-or-nothing disassembly procedure.
We decided to pick option "all" and just lay everything out, still connected.
Beauty is only skin-deep, and so too are this controller's physical changes. Inside, it's largely the same design as the original Xbox One controller—our guides should be relevant for both models.
The new controller added Bluetooth to its existing WiFiDirect connection. Any notes on that?
With regards to the "Inside, it's largely the same design" comment. I've had two original controllers and an Elite controller that developed left stick drift. Are the joystick boxes any different in the One S controller or are they the same crappy part? TIA.
Yeah, I'd like to know if the stick assemblies use the same grey plastic clips that eventually pop off after wear and tear. Can you answer please?
Schritt 18.
That's a wrap! Time to lay out the parts and calculate a repairability score.
Abschließende Gedanken.
Only a few tools are required to take the whole console apart. Once inside, a clean, no-nonsense modular design allows the drives, fan, heat sink, PSU, wireless board, and front daughterboard to be easily replaced. Fewer interlocking body panels and a simpler clip arrangement make opening this generation of Xbox easier than its senior. Replacing the hard drive will require both voiding your warranty and some difficult hackery to make it serviceable.

My question is whether the SATA controller on the motherboard is a SATA III interface; the tear down guide (which is great btw!) only mentions that the 2TB hard drive itself is SATA III. According to the Xbox One (original) tear down guide and this tear down guide, both the Xbox One and Xbox One S use the same south bridge; which would imply that the Xbox One S is only capable of SATA II speeds, regardless of the fact it holds a SATA III drive.
I Googled the X861949 southbridge and it's the exact same one as in the first Xbone.
It hardly matters; no HDD is going to get anywhere near the limits of the SATA II bus, let alone the SATA III bus. You need a seriously fast SSD to start seeing a difference there, and AFAICT the XBone's OS isn't set up to do TRIM, which would limit the lifespan.
wonder about the possibility of cloning the HDD to a SSD. has anyone tried this yet?
I hope someone tries it because I want to know if it can be done.
An user cloned his 500gb hdd on a 500gb SSD and it worked, not sure if cloning a source bigger than the target will still do the trick.
I can confirm it will work. I have the original model Xbox One and put a 2TB hard drive in there, no issues. It's not even as hard as these guys make it sound. You just plug your original hard drive into a computer and make an image of it ("dd" style image, I use Win32DiskImager on Windows for it), then write the image back to your new drive.
If the new drive is larger (which is generally the whole point), boot up GParted and enlarge the data partition. They are all NTFS, no proprietary stuff like the 360. Worked first try.
I used this tutorial when I changed my Xbox One's 500gb hard drive to a Seagate 1tb sshd hybrid drive(Pretty much the same disk that MS use in Xbox One elite console). I would recommend this operation to everyone who fully understand the instructions and are willing to sacrifice the warranty.
Yes, I put a samsung evo 850 500gb ssd internally in my xbox. The clone process is fairly simple. A little linux knowhow is required. However, I don't know if the XB1 supports trim.
And Fallout 4 see's a significant decrease in load times. It's actually playable now. 15-20 second load time vs 1-2 minutes.
A SATA III hard drive does not make a SATA III system. The southbridge is the same, so I assume still limited to SATA II.
There is one thing that is not clear to me about this teardown. Does the One S motherboard have a SATA3 port or is it only the Seagate HDD that has the SATA3 port? Also, the controller was dismissed as being the same, but it's definitely not the same as the original Xbox One controller from 2013. It has a headphone jack, Bluetooth, different bumpers, and a textured grip.
so it has a separate wifi N chip for the controllers? that explains why they need a separate proprietary adaptor for pc use, also using SATA II while having usb 3 is pretty odd, not to mention this thing seems to be at least on par with modern 2013 APU systems, now down to 16nm, the psu is a lot smaller it seems it barely uses half the wattage of before thanks to the process shrink.
The GPU is not the one that the original xbox one has . Xbox one S has a new GPU polaris 11, most likely the RX 460 with h.265 hardware acceleration. The system is codenamed "Durango Polaris".
I don't suppose you noticed where the IR sensor is (not the blaster) on this unit compared with the Xbox One?
The original xbox one doesn't have an IR blaster, you have to use kinect.
What are the xbox one s motherboard dimensions..

Do you think the xbox one s can be water cooled? What kind of cpu waterblock can fit on it cause im going to experiment on the 500gb model.
https://imgur.com/a/EZuso Yes you can, with a bit of modification.

Just wanted to know the plastic is painted white or some kind of coating? Because when I recieved mine it had what appeared to be a hair that was stuck into the front next to the eject button going inside of the disc slot.Or it could of been a plastic burr from manufacturing it. At first I thought it was a crack but upon further inspection with a light I noticed it was a hair stuck into the surface texture of the front console. When I removed it a light line was left. It drives me nuts and only I can motice it from about 3 inches away. Wanted to know if it could be painted to match. Or should I just get over it. Thanks.
Pretty sure it has 8 gig DDR3 RAM not GDDR3.
You may be right. Samsung lists these chips as "gDDR3" (as opposed to GDDR3)—but if you read the fine print, it's not categorized as GDDR3 but rather SDDR3 SDRAM. It's possible Samsung is muddying the waters by using a product name with a lower case "g" that has nothing to do with the GDDR3 standard.
Is the Xbox One fan compatible with the One S fan? Seems the looks like almost the same but.
Aside of a marking on the power supply (110-240) did you actually try pluging in two different voltages?
if we bought Xbox One S from US, can we use it in Turkey? Do we need any other power supply to convert the voltage?
Can the power button be reorientated or is it fixed in there for good? I ask this because when i have my 2tb vertical using the stand the power button display really bugs me.
I may take mine apart and add lights to it, I'll also try and spin the button good shout.
I'd like to know if a PC will recognise the UHD-BD drive so we can get one step closer to cracking open a 4K disc.
Thanks to you guys I dared to open my noisy little X-Box and plant a PC fan in it. The noisiest part since is the new 2 TB HDD which I installed while the case was open. Pictures here: https://1drv.ms/f/s!Ap7h5FFmvMougR0R5fCx.
Cool, excuse my ignorance - but does it plug straight into the xbox motherboard without any special soldering etc required?
No it doesn't. I had to cut the connector off of the original PC fan and the X-Box fan and reconnect them with 3M Scotchlok connectors. Since I am not an expert technician I simply guessed that it would be a standard PWM fan with a proprietary connector. After cutting the cables I connected the X-Box connector to the Noctua fan cables in the same order they left the fan motor of the X-Box fan (from left to right: Noctua: black, ye, gr, blue; X-Box all black). I hope you get what I am trying to say here, since English isnt my first language. I've played for a few hours since and I have no (heat) problems whatsoever.
Hi, I'm trying to decide whether or not to upgrade from the Xbox one, my main consideration is whether the 4k upscaling capabilities in the One S is superior to the Sony 4k processor X1 found in my TV (Sony KD55X8005CBU (SD:2).
I'm not concerned with HDR at the moment as my TV does not support it. I was looking for the "bit" in the Xbox one S teardown that's responsible for the upscaling so I could compare it, but after reading this I'm one the wiser :( Please don't take that the wrong way, it's not a criticism of the article, which I enjoyed it more than I thought possible from a tear down write up. Kind regards.
Which ones are the extra connectors (the white ones) of the Disk Drive and Hard Drive aside from the SATA connectors?
I Need An Power Supply Replacement And I Can't Seem To Locate A Website That Sells These Can Anyone Help me.

I've thought about replacing the internal HDD with an SSD to improve speed of the console and especially loading times of games. After I saw good youtube reviews of people using external SSDs attached via USB 3.0 I changed my mind and I added also an external SSD to my Xbox One S. I used "Samsung Extreme 500" SSD with a capacity of 240 GB (which is working fine even it shows only 230 usable in Xbox menu). Speed has increased! :-)
I have done this.
i need de internal power supply to use in xbox one s.
"Microsoft Made in china.
Chicony Power Technology Co., LTD.
i have a picture.
do you have this power supply?
how much to send to brasil in this adress?
Does anyone know where I can locate a New HDMI port for the Xbox One S ? Seems like a difficult part to locate.
My Xbox One Keeps Tripping Off And A Technician Claims It's My Processor But Can't Fix It . Please Can You Help Me Out?
My Xbox light won't come on and when I turn it on its on on for a brief moment then the Xbox shuts off. Is this my power supply or could it be something else as well.
Any one know what plastic the xbox one s is made of I want to paint mine black and green and i'm not sure what paint to use or even how to prepare the surface. Thanks guys.
Great one. I really liked it.
