Xbox One S vs PS4 Slim: which delivers the most? We don’t know who’s copying who, but Xbox One and PlayStation 4 seem to be following very similar paths. Both have new powered-up iterations coming in the shape of Xbox One Scorpio and PS4 Neo. And both have slim versions out this autumn: Xbox One S, and the new slim PS4. But these new consoles aren’t carbon copies of one another. If you’re still deciding whether to buy an Xbox One S or a slim PS4, you’ll want to know which new features have been added – or missed out – on each. So that’s exactly what we’ve done in this post. Here’s our head-to-head match-up of the ‘S’ and the ‘slim’. Size comparison: slim PS4 wins. The most noticeable difference in these new console revisions is their smaller size. This mainly benefits Microsoft and Sony by reducing their costs. It also means these new consoles will take up less space under your telly. So which is smaller? Here are the dimensions: Original Xbox One : 333 x 274 x 79 mm (biggest) Xbox One S : 296 x 231 x 65 mm (around 38% smaller than OG) Original PS4 : 275 x 305 x 53 mm (about the same as Xbox One S) Slim PS4 : 264 x 288 x 39 mm (smallest, around 33% smaller than OG) The slim PS4 is the clear winner here. Not only is it a third smaller than the old PS4, it’s also smaller than Xbox One S by a similar margin. Power: Small bump for Xbox One S. Xbox One S does offer small improvements to the frame rates of some games, thanks to a faster GPU clock speed. Microsoft itself describes these as “pretty minor”. We don’t know yet if the slim PS4 does the same, since it hasn’t been officially revealed yet. But if you want a real power boost for your Xbox One and PS4 games, wait for Scorpio and Neo. 4K video: Xbox One S has it, slim PS4 doesn’t. One of the best features of Xbox One S is playback of 4K Ultra-HD video, including 4K Blu-ray discs and streaming content. The new console can also upscale HD content to 4K. (You’ll need a 4K telly of course). The new slim PS4 sadly has none of this. Maybe Neo will. New controllers all round. Both new consoles come with newly improved controllers in the box. The new Xbox controller is a beautifully sleek update, made from better quality parts. It also adds longer signal range and new Bluetooth connectivity, so you can use it on PC and other devices. The new DualShock 4 for PlayStation looks very similar to the old one, but it adds a wired USB connection for reduced lag and the lightbar is now visible on the front. Cut connectors: Xbox Kinect and PS4 optical audio. It’s not all new additions, however. Both new consoles remove fairly significant hardware features that were in the original systems. On Xbox One S, it’s the Kinect port. Maybe few people will care, but you’ll need an adapter if you want to use Kinect with the S. On slim PS4, optical audio out has gone. Which are you buying? In terms of improvements over their original versions , we think Xbox One S slightly edges the slim PS4 thanks to its 4K video playback and smart new controller. The PS4 Pro is a different beast when compared to the Xbox One S. Its internal components are a big improvement over the original model, as you can see in the above spec list. The newly implemented Boost Mode also allows players to gain extra benefits such as higher framerates across significantly more games, even those lacking a PS4 Pro-specific patch. PS4 Pro vs Xbox One S – Dimensions. The PS4 Pro is quite a bit wider than the Xbox One S, measuring in at 295 x 327 x 55mm where the One S is 229 x 292 x 63.5mm. It’s also longer, but ever so slightly thinner. PS4 Pro vs Xbox One S – Resolution and HDR gaming. Both the PS4 Pro and Xbox One S support HDR (High Dynamic Range). For more on this colourful new feature you can check out our HDR article. The standard PS4 and PS4 Slim also now supports HDR thanks to a post-launch patch. The core difference here isn’t HDR, but instead resolution: the PS4 Pro has the ability to output games at a resolution higher than Full HD. Since release we have seen certain titles render at a native 4K resolution while others settle for an upscaled alternative. Whatever the elevated resolution is then be upscaled to 4K. If you’re playing in Full HD, you’ll end up with smoother anti-aliasing, meaning the divisions between objects on screen will be much smoother than on the regular PS4. Many of the PS4 Pro supported titles use a 4K “checkerboard” rendering technique that subsequently improves textures and specular effects, making for a cleaner, crisper overall image without putting out a native 4K resolution. Developers are also free to take advantage of the additional power of the Pro however they see fit. In the instance of the recent, excellent Nioh, players were given the choice whether to play the game with a higher resolution or framerate with multiple settings, much like PC players enjoy. The Xbox One S only upscales games to 4K with no enhancements aside from HDR, as mentioned above. PS4 Pro vs Xbox One S – Boost Mode vs Ultra HD Blu-Ray. Features-wise, the two are very similar, but there’s one key differentiator that gives the Xbox One S a massive boost, and that’s its Ultra HD Blu-ray player. Incredibly, despite owning the UHD Blu-ray standard, Sony has chosen not to include the technology in its flagship console. 4K streaming is supported on YouTube and Netflix for both consoles, with more services on the way. When it first launched the PS4 Pro was only capable of improving visuals and performance on titles officially patched by developers. However, this all changed with the arrival of Boost Mode, a new feature introduced in the PS4’s 4.50 firmware update. When activated from the settings menu, this feature will improve performance of all PS4 titles, regardless if they’ve been patched or not. Of course, the results are mixed. PS4 Pro vs Xbox One S – What games can I play on it? Both the PS4 Pro and Xbox One S support all existing games, whether they be physical or digital. Those wishing to upgrade don’t need to worry about re-purchasing their entire library. In terms of games with visual benefits, specific games have been upgraded for both systems to support HDR content, with PS4 Pro being the only one to benefit from higher resolutions at the time of writing. We’ve compiled some specific games for each system below, including some of the things you can expect. Resident Evil 7 – Capcom’s latest survival horror masterpiece benefits hugely from HDR. The virtual reality experience is also enhanced by PS4 Pro with enhanced visuals on PlayStation VR. The Last Guardian – Having launched with support for 4K and 1080p performance modes, Team Ico’s latest effort is a sight to behold. HDR is also supported on the standard PS4. The Last of Us Remastered – Naughty Dog’s modern classic is a great showpiece for HDR. It also supports 4K at 60fps, which is nothing to sniff at. Hitman – HDR support is absent, although both performance and textures are boosted on PS4 Pro. Rise of the Tomb Raider – One of the shining examples of PS4 Pro upgrades. Crystal Dynamics has implemented visual improvements in both 4K and 1080p for Pro owners. Battlefield 1 – The framerate across epic multiplayer battles receives a huge boost thanks to PS4 Pro, helped further by additional terrain detail on each map. Gears of War 4 – Acting as the pioneering example of HDR on Xbox One S, Gears of War 4 was the first of a few select titles to support the feature. Forza Horizon 3 – Heralded as one of 2016’s best racers, Horizon 3 looks even better with a healthy dose of HDR on Xbox One S. Final Fantasy 15 – It turns out HDR is just what Noctis and friends needed, adding an extra helping of colour to the JRPG’s gorgeous open world. It’s clear Microsoft has focused on delivering 4K video content, while Sony has tried its best to produce a more powerful console designed with gaming in mind. The upcoming Boost Mode feature is bound to sway a lot of consumers looking for a genuine difference between the Pro and original PS4. Which of these consoles is best for you can differ depending on your love for fancy visuals, top notch games or 4K video content. If you haven’t found yourself wishing for higher framerates and crisper visuals on your current console than upgrading might not be the right choice, especially if you’re yet to invest in a 4K display. If most of your friends are playing Xbox games online, get an Xbox One S and join them. If they have PS4s, go get yourself a PS4 Slim. Even if you don’t see yourself gaming online, get the console your friends have. Why? Because you can borrow games! As a casual gamer, the cost of buying games seems crazy. New AAA titles cost upwards of $50 at launch. Seriously, five games will be the cost of the console you just bought. If you don’t care about getting a game on the first day and are happy to wait, then get the console that your friends have and share your games library. Sure, there’s the addition of HDR and 4K blu-ray support, but you’ll need an impressive 4KTV to make any use of these features. If you don’t already own one, though, it’s definitely worth considering a purchase. However, with Xbox One X out now, it makes things a little more complicated. TrustedReviews has broken down everything you need to know about the two consoles below, for anybody considering picking it up. Xbox One S Price: How much should you pay? With the Xbox One now discontinued and Microsoft continuing with the two main consoles of One S and One X, the One S has become significantly cheaper. Bundles are available for as littles as £200, which could go lower in sales. Xbox One S is 40% smaller with built-in power supply. The Xbox One S is 40% smaller than the original – a considerable reduction. Given that the original Xbox One is a chunky machine – at 333mm x 276mm x 78mm, it dominates the comparatively slight PS4 – this is an important change. However, PS4 Slim gives Xbox One S a run for its money in terms of sheer dimensions. Plus the power supply is now built-in. So, 40% smaller and no bulky power supply? That’s a pretty big tick in favour of the Xbox One S. 4K Ultra HD, 4K Blu-ray and High Dynamic Range support. Arguably the standout feature for Xbox One S. Not only does the Xbox One S support 4K video playback from streaming services like Netflix and Amazon, it’s also a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player. This makes the $299/£249 starting price excellent value compared to dedicated Ultra HD players currently available. Our testing suggests the Xbox One S is a more than competent Ultra HD Blu-ray player, so AV fans should hold no fears in that regard. While the original Xbox One is technically capable of supporting 4K gaming and video, it has an HDMI 1.4a port, meaning it can only output 4K at 30Hz, which is very limiting. Xbox One S has a slight performance bump. Much like PS4 Pro, the Xbox One S is not the beginning of a new console generation, but an expansion of a platform we already know and love. But it does offer a very slight improvement over its predecessor. The Coalition head Rod Fergusson revealed to Polygon that his team had taken advantage of additional raw GPU and CPU power for Gears of War 4 , to improve frame rates. Ferguson claimed his engineers have been able to, as Polygon puts it, “leverage the additional power to reduce the frequency of the frame rate or resolution penalties.” A Microsoft spokesperson then confirmed, via The Verge, “We have the same SoC architecture as Xbox One today. “For games that want to take advantage of HDR, we gave developers access to a small amount of additional processing power.” Overall though, don’t expect games to look noticeably different on Xbox One S to Xbox One thanks to the additional power, instead only getting minor stability improvements. Xbox One S can upscale games to 4K. The upscaling capabilities of the Xbox One S were revealed by Jeff Henshaw, Group Program Manager at Xbox at an E3 session . Henshaw said: “It’s not native 4K, but the Xbox One S can upscale games from 1080p to 4K.” It means the Xbox One S will be able to offer gaming at a higher resolution than its predecessor, although it won’t quite be as good as native 4K. In our review, we found the Xbox One S is good at upscaling games and 4K video content – better than the TV we tested on. It can be stored upright. That’s great news, though the stand is an optional extra, unless you buy the 2TB model, which includes a stand. There’s no dedicated Kinect port. Not a huge surprise, given its increasing irrelevance, though owners who want to use Kinect can do say via a USB adapter. The adapter is sold seperately and can be ordered directly from Microsoft. Don’t expect any new Kinect games on the horizon, though. But there is an IR blaster. In the place of a dedicated Kinect port, the Xbox One S comes with an integrated IR (infrared) blaster. That means you can configure your Xbox One S to turn on other devices, like your TV, audio/video receiver, and cable or satellite receiver. The idea is that you can reduce the number of remotes you need to control your stuff. New controller adds Bluetooth. Not content with the already excellent Xbox One controller, or the incredible Xbox One Elite Controller, Microsoft’s unveiled the Xbox One S controller as well. The pad has a new textured grip, exchangeable colour covers, extended range and – most importantly – now has Bluetooth so you can use it with a PC wirelessly. Xbox One S vs Xbox One: Should you upgrade? There’s no doubt the new Xbox One S is a better all around console than its predecessor. Not only does it slim down the original console’s bulky frame, the Xbox One S comes with a load of features that make a far more desirable device. Firstly, you get a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player. Currently, those things will cost you upwards of £400 on their own. Secondly, you can stream 4K at the proper 60 Hz in HDR from apps such as Netflix and Amazon Prime Instant Video. Plus, there’s even a slight performance boost. The console benefits from extra processing power, too. It probably isn’t worth it for most Xbox One owners if you don’t care about 4K video, but it looks like a good upgrade if you fancy getting into Ultra HD Blu-ray. And if you don’t already own an Xbox One, the smaller size and great features make it very tempting indeed. But what about Xbox One X? While at the tail end of 2016 the choice between the two consoles seemed like a no-brainer, as we move closer the the supposed “holiday 2017” launch date of the Xbox One X, the proposition becomes even trickier. There’s still so much we don’t know about Microsoft’s all-powerful machine – most importantly, how much it will cost – but the fact this unit will represent a significant upgrade over anything that has come before it means that the idea of buying an Xbox One as a first-time buyer now becomes a bit of a tough sell. Both are the smaller and sleeker versions of their original current generation counterparts, and while both boast great features, you should definitely get the PS4 Slim, and here's why. Microsoft has failed to improve on the Xbox One S, albeit being smaller, and it still has the same hardware problems that the Xbox One did with specs and power. Sure Microsoft has their own line of great games for the Xbox, but those can't compare to the likes of "God of War," "inFamous," "Uncharted," "The Last of Us," and "Bloodborne." Another reason to get a Playstation 4 Slim over the Xbox One S, is the fact that Playstation has a better reach on Japanese titles. If you're a fan of Japanese games, Sony is the only way to go, and while the Xbox is on its way, the Playstation is already light years ahead in releasing great games from the Land of the Rising Sun. Also, Sony is now on the market for virtual reality with the Playstation VR, and if you're a console gamer who wants to experience a world of virtual reality gaming, the Playstation 4 Slim is your only option. Lastly, the Playstation 4 Slim, is really really small, and despite the face that the Xbox One S is the better looking console, it still takes up a bit of space. Well, wonder no longer - here are the key features and specs for the PS4 Pro, PS4 Slim and Xbox One S. PlayStation 4 Pro. Previous thought to be called the PS4 Neo, the PS4 Pro is Sony's upgraded PlayStation 4 - a PlayStation 4.5, if you like. The big news is it's got double the GPU power, which means it can drive games at 4K resolution, which should look very smart on your latest television. The size of the internal hard drive has also been upped to 1TB. Sony is keen to emphasise this is still part of the same console 'generation' though, and says it will play all existing PS4 titles. You'll also be able to transfer all your data from your vanilla PS4 onto the Pro (although this won't include certain discontinued titles such as the PT demo. Sad face). While we had plenty of doubts at the thought of a new version of PS4 halfway through its console cycle, Sony has dispelled every one of them. With the combination of 4K, 2160p resolution and HDR, PS4 Pro is more than just the most powerful games console you can buy today - it's a must for anyone with a 4K TV. On the downside, it can't play Ultra HD Blu-rays (a issue the Xbox One S certainly doesn't have), which is a shame if you wanted this as the centre of your entertainment universe. It's also a little too bulky in size, but these are small concessions considering the upgrade PS4 Pro represents. Like the Xbox One S, High Dynamic Range (HDR) support will give colours a more natural and balanced look on PS4 Pro, but if you're still a vanilla PS4 there's no need to feel left out as Sony confirmed HDR is coming to all PS4 models via a software update in the near future. Not every game has a 'PS4 Pro mode', but Sony says most games coming from here on out will support an upgraded version. This Christmas most of the big new titles will be PS4 Pro ready, including Watch Dogs 2, Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare and FIFA 17. Some existing PS4 games will be patched to support a PS4 Pro mode, including The Last of Us and Uncharted 4: A Thief's End. The PlayStation 4 Pro will cost £349 or $399 and is available now. Xbox One S. Microsoft's new Xbox console, which has been with us for a month, is smaller, more powerful, and. whiter. As well as looking less chunky and less ugly than the Xbox One, it's also been upgraded to be capable of playing 4K video and Ultra HD Blu-rays. The other main upgrade is the option of a 2TB hard drive. In terms of games performance, though, there's only a fractional upgrade games can't run at native 4K resolution, though they can be upscaled and support High Dynamic Range (HDR) for better, deeper colours. That means the Xbox One S sits somewhere between the PS4 Pro and the PS4 Slim, with its smaller size and very slight performance upgrades. The new box measures 333mm x 276mm x 78mm and supports HDMI 2.0a output (4K video running at a 60Hz refresh rate). It's undoubtedly worth buying over the original Xbox One but lovers of Microsoft's console might want to wait for the Xbox Scorpio, due out next year - it's slated to have upgrades that are more than just superficial, and is rumoured to be even more powerful than PS4 Pro. Prices for the Xbox One S start at £249.99 or $299, and it's available now. PlayStation 4 Slim. The PlayStation 4 Slim is Sony's answer to the Xbox One S: a more compact, leaner version of the original console that keeps mostly the same hardware (just like the PS3 Slim before it). However, unlike Microsoft, Sony hasn't boosted the console's actual features this time. That means no 4K streaming or gaming support - for that you're going to have to opt for the PS4 Pro. Obviously Sony wants this to replace the original PlayStation 4, offering new console buyers the same technology inside a smaller, more aesthetically pleasing box. Indeed, in Sony's press event, it simply referred to the new box as the PS4, so this is the new baseline model it would seem. "There's never been a better time" to join the PS4 community, according to Sony's Andrew House, who introduced the console on stage. The PS4 Slim (or just plain old PS4) measures 288mm x 264mm x 39mm but for the rest of the specs you can refer to our original PlayStation 4 review. Unfortunately it sounds like Sony has ditched the optical audio out port along the way in its move to the smaller box. The PlayStation 4 Slim will cost £259 or $299 and is available now. The Good The Xbox One S is a slick looking game console that's 40 percent smaller than the original and ditches the infamously gigantic power brick. It can display 4K video from streaming services and Ultra HD Blu-rays, and supports HDR contrast on video and games. The updated controller works with other Bluetooth devices, too. The Bad 4K, Ultra HD Blu-ray and HDR settings only work with newer TVs, and may require some trial and error. The updated controller feels cheaper than its predecessor. Project Scorpio, the more powerful Xbox One successor, arrives in late 2017. The Bottom Line The Xbox One S is the console Microsoft should have delivered three years ago, but there's little reason to upgrade if you already own the original box. Review Sections. CNET Gaming Consoles Microsoft Xbox One S. Update 8/4/16: Several spec teardown reports have uncovered slight difference in the graphical hardware performance of Xbox One S. Specifically, Xbox One S has a small GPU clock increase of 914 MHz from 853 MHz and an ESRAM bandwidth increase of 219 GB/s from 204 GB/s. These bumps are only noticeable in-game in a small number of situations. In fact, they exist only as an bonus side effect of Microsoft ensuring HDR content performs without a hitch. This is more like it. The Xbox One S is the version of the console that Microsoft should've first released back in 2013 instead of the lumbering beast that we got. It's better in a number of ways, making it even more of a worthy alternative to Sony's PlayStation 4. Xbox One S offers a far more attractive enclosure, options for a bigger hard drive, a slightly redesigned controller and some video perks for owners of 4K TVs. It starts at $300, £250 or AU$400 for the 500GB version; $350, £300 or AU$500 for a 1TB model; and $400, £350 or AU$549 for 2TB. That last model is available to buy as of today in the US (and includes the vertical stand that otherwise costs $20 when purchased separately in the US), while those with the smaller hard drives will be available later in August, bundled with games such as Madden 17 and Halo. (Additional bundles will follow later in the year -- including a pricier 2TB Gears of War 4 version in October -- and may vary by region.) Sounds like a slam dunk, right? Unfortunately, it's never that simple. The One S doesn't get an across-the-board "buy it now" recommendation for two reasons. First off, it doesn't deliver huge improvements for anyone who already owns an Xbox One. But more importantly, Microsoft has already promised that the next Xbox -- dubbed Project Scorpio -- will be arriving in late 2017 with with the seriously amped-up graphics and VR-ready hardware that audiences are clamoring for. When it's all said and done, the Xbox One S should be primarily viewed as a slimmed-down version of the Xbox One that introduces a mildly updated controller and provisions for 4K display. It's not going to warp you into a state-of-the-art gaming experience. Pragmatically, you're probably better off nabbing an older Xbox One, which are now being sold at fire-sale prices. But if you are getting an Xbox One for the first time, have an interest in the bundled games and aren't saving your pennies for 2017's Project Scorpio, the One S is certainly a good all-round gaming and entertainment deal. What's new in the Xbox One S. There's a short but significant list of improvements and changes to the Xbox One S. Smaller, cleaner design: To start, it's 40 percent smaller, which considering its power supply is now internal, is impressive. It's also stark white, with some slick plastic moldings flanking the entirety of the box. I think it's the best-looking Xbox Microsoft has ever designed. The One S can also stand vertically, too. The 2TB model we received for review packs in a stand. If you buy one of the other models, you can get the stand separately for $20. 4K and HDR video: Xbox One S gets a fairly beefy upgrade on its video capabilities, with 4K resolution (3,840x2,160, or four times as sharp as standard 1080p HDTVs) and HDR (high dynamic range, which is basically enhanced contrast and color). Keep in mind: those features only work on compatible TVs and 4K functionality only works with a small but growing list of compatible video content. 4K can currently be accessed through streaming video services such as Amazon and Netflix (as long as you have the bandwidth to support it and pay for their premium tier) and those new 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs. Certain games, meanwhile, will eventually be able to take advantage of HDR visual improvements, but don't look for PC-like 4K graphics -- the games are merely upscaled to 4K. So no, you're not getting native 4K gaming out of an Xbox One S. In fact, only a limited number of games will feature HDR and none of them are out yet. They are Gears of War 4, Forza Horizon 3 and 2017's Scalebound. New controller design: The Xbox One controller has been updated for the S, too. It has a more streamlined top section, better range and textured grips. It can also use Bluetooth to connect, which opens the door for compatibility with other devices -- no more annoying dongles, at least on Bluetooth-compatible PCs. The One S controller (right), compared with its predecessor. Unfortunately, I'm not a fan of the new controller's design. It's not a drastic departure from the original, but there's just enough of a change to make it feel cheaper. The plastic textured grips don't feel good the way rubberized ones do, but thankfully the triggers seem unchanged. The D-pad also feels slightly less tactile -- I even noticed differences between two of the new controllers side by side. IR blaster and receiver: Still present is the IR port for controlling the console with a remote, but the Xbox One S also features an integrated IR blaster to control or power on other devices in the room. And it still does everything the old Xbox One does: The good news is that you're not losing anything with the Xbox One S compared with its predecessor. Around back the console offers a lot of the same ports as the original Xbox One, though noticeably absent is a dedicated Kinect port. You can still attach Kinect to the Xbox One S, you'll just need a special $40 (!) adapter. Either way, the omission of a Kinect port should give you an idea of how that peripheral is regarded at Microsoft HQ. HDMI-in and -out ports are still there, so you can still make use of the Xbox One's live TV integration if that's something that appeals to you, but I never found it overly useful. Suffice it to say, the One S plays all existing Xbox One games, and a growing list of Xbox 360 games. It also includes all of the encouraging software improvements Microsoft has made over the past few years, including the redesigned interface, support for the Cortana digital assistant (using a microphone headset), compatibility with the Windows Store and, soon, additional cross-play options with Windows PC gamers on certain titles. 4K and HDR scorecard. I want to personally thank the Xbox One S for introducing me to the hot mess that is the world of 4K and HDR formats. I considered myself fairly fluent in the language of home theater, but I was bewildered at the insane of amount of granularity and confusion that the format is currently plagued with. Hot Products. PS4 Pro owners are still waiting for 4K. The latest update for the Amazon Video app on Xbox One S enables 4K playback, giving Microsoft’s console another source of UHD content. Many of Amazon’s original shows — Sneaky Pete, Bosch, and The Grand Tour among them — are available to stream in 4K. Netflix, Vudu, and Hulu also offer at least some 4K programming on Xbox One S. Oddly, Sony’s PlayStation 4 Pro console doesn’t yet support Amazon Video in 4K; we’ve reached out to Amazon for details on when it might receive the same functionality. There are other ways of viewing Amazon’s 4K content, including apps for Roku, Nvidia’s Shield, and some smart TVs. But Microsoft touts Xbox One S as “the only console that lets you stream 4K video content and watch Ultra HD Blu-ray movies with HDR.” If only Sony had built a 4K Blu-ray drive into the PS4 Pro, there’d be fewer opportunities for Microsoft to throw out those burns. The good Microsoft's Xbox One offers impressive graphics and a solid list of exclusive 2015 titles. The Microsoft console currently edges ahead of the PS4 with a better selection of media apps. The console's fall-2015 dashboard update is a noticeable improvement. The console has backward compatibility with around 100 Xbox 360 titles, and that list is poised to grow. The bad The Xbox One's new interface is still more convoluted than the PS4's. In general, the PS4 delivers slightly better installation times, graphics and performance on cross-platform games. The Xbox One also lags behind the PS4 in its selection of indie games. The Kinect's legacy is still a blemish. The bottom line While the PS4 remains our overall preferred choice in the game console race, the Xbox One's significant course corrections and solid exclusives make it a compelling alternative. With E3 2015 safely in the rearview mirror and the Xbox One's second anniversary fast approaching, we're diving back in the home console pond to take the temperature of the current landscape of videogame consoles. Without a doubt, the Xbox One has gone through the more significant metamorphosis of the two big consoles since their release in November 2013 -- the other being the PlayStation 4. Even before its launch, Microsoft had begun changing the messaging philosophy of the platform, going from a console that heavily relied on DRM to an unshackled experience where owners can trade in and play used games. That was followed up by making the Kinect motion sensor no longer a required part of the system (the no-Kinect bundle is now the default entry-level model). Meanwhile, a lot has been fine-tuned under the Xbox One's hood -- particularly the firmware's functionality (not actual hardware tweaks), which, from a performance and ease-of-use standpoint, is still playing second to Sony's impressively smooth interface. A massive interface update dubbed the "New Xbox One Experience" was released in November 2015 that has improved some of the dashboard's logistics and aesthetics, but it's still hanging on to some lingering frustrations. But more on that later. Overall, Xbox One has had a great 2015 and is home to the best exclusives of the 2015 holiday season. In the short term, Xbox One makes a solid argument for ownership, but do 2016 and beyond look to be just as promising? To be clear, the two consoles are very closely matched. They offer a growing library of third-party games -- mainstays like the Call of Duty, Assassin's Creed and Madden series, as well as newer titles like Fallout 4 and Rainbow Six Siege are all available for both platforms. And both systems double as full-service entertainment systems, with built-in Blu-ray players and streaming services like Netflix, YouTube and Hulu. In our opinion, the PS4 still maintains an edge, with slightly smoother gameplay and a much more straightforward interface. But Xbox harbors a more mature media app ecosystem in the US and a decent list of exclusive titles. Xbox One will continue to have a solid 2015 in terms of exclusive software, but 2016 and beyond aren't as well defined. Xbox One is sold in what feels like a constantly expanding bundle market. In fact, don't buy the console if it doesn't come with at least one game. At any given time the odds are there's a bundle that includes a game that's right for you. For the most part, the Kinect camera-microphone array has been eliminated from bundles, but you can still purchase the original tandem for around $400 or more. Alternately, you can buy the Kinect module separately (usually with a game included) for $150. That said, we really can't recommend Kinect for much of anything. No matter when you decide to buy an Xbox One, odds are you'll find a compelling bundle or discounted special pricing. Xbox One is also home to EA Access, a subscription early-access program that gives members a chance to play games a few days before they're released and provides access to a growing list of EA legacy games. Media playback. Xbox One now has a media player app that will play nearly any file format you throw at it -- off a drive or anything discoverable on your home network, like another PC or NAS (network attached storage). The Xbox One media app also lets you customize the dashboard with a custom photo wallpaper. As of June 2015, the PS4 has a media player app too. Kinect advantages. Kinect is an ambitious attempt to integrate voice control and motion gesturing with live TV, interface navigation and some gaming elements. That said, it's definitely taken a backseat in terms of priority. In fact, we don't think Microsoft even said the word "Kinect" at the company's E3 2015 press conference. It's also no longer bundled with a new retail Xbox One. But, if you're still intrigued by its potential, when it works, Kinect technology brings with it an "aha" moment straight out of a sci-fi movie. Kinect lets you change the channel, volume and other items using only your voice. Its problems, however, are documented later in this review. Other features of the Xbox One experience can be accessed or activated with hand gestures and voice commands. You can say, "Xbox, record that," and the console will save the last chunk of gameplay to the hard drive. The list of voice-control triggers is lengthy. Of course, the Kinect is available only in the more expensive $400-and-up Xbox One bundle. However, if you buy the entry-level no-Kinect bundle and decide you want to upgrade, you can buy a standalone Kinect later for $149, £130 or AU$170 (usually bundled with a game). Sarah Tew / CNET. The Xbox One controller. While it's not necessarily what I'd call a vast improvement over the Xbox 360's stellar input device, the Xbox One's controller is a solid and mostly comfortable handheld. Microsoft has totally revamped the problematic D-pad present on the Xbox 360 controller and opted instead for a clicky, tactile pad. Battery life is impressive on the controller, though it takes two AAs as opposed to the DualShock 4's internal rechargeable battery. (You can use your own rechargeables, or invest an extra $25, £19 or AU$30 per controller in Microsoft's Play and Charge Kit.) Microsoft debuted two new controllers around the time of E3 2015: a revamped controller with a 3.5mm headphone port and the Xbox One Elite Wireless Controller ($150/AU$199) which allows players to customize their pad with interchangeable D-pad pieces, analog sticks and triggers. That controller is also available in a bundle with a 1TB solid-state hybrid drive for $500. Both controllers can also be connected to a Windows PC with a Micro-USB cable or wirelessly to a Windows 10 PC with a $25 dongle. Related Links. BYO USB 3.0 storage. The PS4 has an easily accessible and replaceable hard drive, but the Xbox One's drive is not to be messed with. Instead, you can bring your own storage via an external hard drive over a USB 3.0 connection. And because USB 3.0 is faster than the Xbox One's internal stock drive, odds are you may see a slight bump in performance, too. Just make sure your external drive is 250GB or bigger. Cloud-synced game saves. Signing into any other Xbox One will give you access to all of your digital games and their respective game-saves. PS4 owners need to have PlayStation Plus to upload cloud saves, while Xbox One owners can do it without Xbox Live Gold. For what it's worth, the cloud game-saving feature is definitely better on Xbox One. Going from console to console is a much smoother experience. Gold no longer required for basically everything. It took a while, but an Xbox Live Gold membership is no longer needed to access apps like Netflix and Skype. You still need it to play multiplayer games online, but the massive restrictions on other functionality have mostly been lifted. Always-on has a bright side. While the Xbox One's always-on feature has been a point of some contention, jumping right into a game from live TV is nothing short of brilliant. Xbox One will suspend your most recently played game while you watch TV or do other things and when you rejoin your game session it's resurrected with absolutely no loading time. Of course, if you don't use your Xbox One with live TV there's really no reason to keep the console on 24-7, save for receiving updates when you're not using the console. PlayStation 4 added the majority of the functionality described here with a firmware update. Exclusive games and content. Microsoft has secured a number of high-profile exclusive deals for content with third-party games like Evolve and early beta access to a number of games including Tom Clancy's The Division. Xbox One also has a solid roster of exclusive franchises including the Forza, Halo, Fable, and now the Sunset Overdrive and Titanfall series. A more detailed list of exclusives can be found at the top of this review. Xbox Games with Gold. While it debuted with an underwhelming selection of free titles, Xbox's Games with Gold monthly giveaway lets Xbox Live Gold members download two Xbox One games for free. The caliber of these titles has started to improve, but still isn't as impressive as the entire PlayStation Plus package. Backward compatibility. Included in the November 2015 "New Xbox One Experience," the Xbox One now offers limited backward compatibility with a handful of Xbox 360 games. Around 100 Xbox 360 games currently work , and Microsoft will let each developer decide whether to allow legacy play for its existing 360 games. Windows 10 game streaming. With the introduction of Windows 10 and the "New Xbox One Experience," Xbox One owners can now stream games to their PC with the Xbox Windows 10 app. For more on that specific experience, check out CNET's Windows 10 review. Over-the-air DVR. New Xbox One Experience. In a November 2015 update, Microsoft completely redesigned the dashboard interface for the Xbox One. We've outlined its major features here . Long story short, the new dashboard is easier to navigate and more logically laid out. But a lot of the fundamental shortcomings like slow game installations still plague the system. Most of the back-end settings like app and game management remain unchanged. We'll continue to keep our eye on the Xbox One's dashboard and update this review with significant changes. Xbox One cons. Here are the areas where the Xbox One leaves room for improvement. System interface. Even with the New Xbox One Experience in place, the console's interface leaves room for improvement. Compared with the PS4's, it's at times confusing, especially when navigating through the system's settings. Overall it's undoubtedly better, but still, two years after release, navigating through the Xbox One takes some getting used to. The New Xbox One Experience. Kinect's shortcomings and annoyances. If you're not interested in getting an Xbox One with a Kinect, skip ahead. But if you're on the fence about spending the extra cash on Microsoft's microphone/infrared/camera technology, read onward. Given the short list of positives Kinect brings to the table, more often than not it's a pain to endure. I've had Kinect attached to my Verizon FiOS cable box for over a year, and it's been nothing but a love/hate relationship. Half the time Kinect will operate flawlessly, other times it's a frustrating mess. Kinect still has never understood the channel voice command "HGTV." It seems to miss other commands quite often, too, with no real explanation as to why something wasn't understood. The system will also not let you watch TV before a system update has been installed. The fact that the console can actually prevent you from watching TV is a huge issue. At the end of the day, Xbox One's ambitious live TV and other extracurriculars get in the way of it being a focused gaming system. Navigating the interface seems to be much more problematic than it rightfully should be, and there's simply not enough transparency in the logic within it. There are oddities peppered throughout, which is the root for countless headaches and frustrations. For now, I just can't recommend Xbox One with Kinect because of the numerous shortcomings the tandem continues to exhibit. Save your money and buy Xbox One without its camera-microphone array. Installation times. Even though the Xbox One and PS4 have similar optical drive hardware, Xbox One lags behind PS4 in some installation times. Xbox One starts installing a game once a disc is inserted and then will flash a "ready to start" message when the game can be booted up before it's done completely installing. In a small sample comparison, Xbox One fell behind PS4's installation time. For Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, the PS4 was ready to play in 2 minutes 30 seconds as opposed to the Xbox One's 8 minutes. Assassin's Creed Unity also installed in 2 minutes 30 on PS4 but wasn't ready to go until 3 minutes 42 on Xbox One. Installation times will vary by game, but when I used a stopwatch to time the consoles side by side, the PS4 came in faster nearly every time. Oddly enough, it seems Xbox One will install a game more quickly when no other features are being used. This includes watching live TV. Independent games. There are independent games available for Xbox One and a smattering of others coming down the road, but not as frequently or as plentiful as they are on PS4. Xbox One owners will get occasional gems like Max: The Curse of the Brotherhood, Ori and the Blind Forest, and the yet-to-be-released Below. Like PS4, Xbox One also has console-exclusive deals in place for titles like Cuphead and INSIDE. To be fair, a lot of the PS4's indie offerings are only console exclusives as well. Xbox One owners also have access to the fruits of ID@Xbox, which have already given way to titles such as Super Time Force and Sixty Second Shooter. Indie fans aren't totally out of luck on Xbox One; there's just a shorter list of titles to play. Broadcasting and sharing. Xbox One offers broadcasting through a Twitch app, but it's nowhere as seamlessly integrated as it is on PS4. The experience is bound to get better, but for now, streaming and social sharing is way better on PS4. As for now, Xbox One doesn't allow for YouTube streaming. Taking a screenshot isn't as easy as the single-button press it should be, so it's tough to get that instant shot you want. The way screenshots and videos are captured feels shoehorned in, so we'd really like Microsoft to figure out an easier way to provide access to capturing in-game content. Using the Upload Studio app, Xbox One users can share clips to Xbox Live, OneDrive and Twitter. Xbox One vs. PS4. There's not likely to be a definitive winner in the current-generation console wars. While the PlayStation 4 had a clear advantage at launch, that edge is slowly evaporating as Microsoft has worked feverishly to undo most of the Xbox One's original missteps. The two consoles are now similarly priced and offer many of the same features. For what it's worth, at the time of this writing, the PlayStation 4 is closing in on 30 million units sold. The Xbox One is estimated to have sold about roughly half that. Right now the PS4 and the Xbox One are neck-and-neck with exclusives -- though the PS4 also has a better range of digital-only titles. But taste in games is always subjective; either those games will appeal to you or they won't. Each console manufacturer has made exclusivity deals with various developers, so the sad reality is you're going to miss out on something great no matter which platform you choose. You might read about the PS4's specs trumping those of the Xbox One, but it's important to keep in mind how that translates to actual results. You'll remember that the PS3 was originally poised to be a massive powerhouse that would leap past the Xbox 360, but in reality it didn't perform much better. You could even make the argument that most multiplatform games played more smoothly and looked better on the Xbox 360. That said, at the time of this writing (and having considered most of the multiplatform games currently available), the PS4 does seem to perform slightly better than the Xbox One. These two consoles are constantly evolving, and the competition is only ramping up. We'll continue to check back in on both the Xbox One and PS4 as they continue to evolve.

PS4 Pro and Xbox One X mark a major shift in console gaming. Console generations have been moved aside in favour of an iterative hardware mode. At least, that’s what the current picture is. Both machines will support all existing PS4 and Xbox One titles respectively while adding plenty of new features and hardware improvements. Let’s be very clear: these consoles are very different offerings that aren’t exact side-by-side rivals . While they both offer 4K gaming, they fill different parts of the market due to their different pricing. Still, a side-by-side look at specs never did anybody any harm, did it? Xbox One X vs PS4 Pro – Price and release date. PS4 Pro launched in November 2016, retailing at £349.99. Sony’s upgraded console is pretty good value considering its specs. The Xbox One X, meanwhile will launch on 7 November for £449/$499. That’s not a massive leap up from the PS4 Pro, but it is still a jump that some people might not be willing to make. Xbox One X vs PS4 Pro – Processor. Xbox One X: 8-core, 2.3GHz processor. PS4 Pro: 8-core, 2.13GHz processor. PS4 Pro is using an improved version of the original model’s chip with a slightly boosted clock speed. The Pro now runs at an impressive 2.13GHz, while the vanilla console lags behind at 1.6. The One X meanwhile, has stolen a bit of a march on the Pro and has a slightly faster processor, but the real meat comparison lies in the graphics comparison. Xbox One X vs PS4 Pro – Graphics. Xbox Scorpio: 6 TFLOPS, 326GB/s, 12GB GDDR5. PS4 Pro: 4.12 TFLOPS, 218 GB/s, 8GB GDDR5. First, some jargon-busting: TFLOPs stands for trillion floating point operations per second, the simplest way of measuring graphical horsepower. GB/s is the bandwidth of that memory, which tells you how quickly the GPU can move frames through the memory and out to your display. The more memory, the more high-resolution textures the GPU can quickly access at any one time, increasing performance. The PS4 Pro possesses 8GB of GDDR5 with an additional 1GB of RAM set aside for handling background processes. The Xbox One X nets a full 12GB of GDDR5. Both consoles will share their memory between the GPU and CPU, although how much each gets is unknown. How will this affect gaming? Technical jargon aside, this difference in graphics power will make a difference when it comes to both consoles’ 4K chops. Microsoft is aiming for full, native 4K at 60fps, while not all PS4 Pro games meet that specification. Some games run at 30fps in 4K, while others manage full 60fps performance at full, native 4K. The rest are a combination of games that only run at 30fps/4K, or render at sub-4K and use clever upscaling techniques to appear 4K. All Xbox One games will run better on One X, whether or not they’ve been specifically updated to do so. You’ll be able to play One X games at Full HD, too, with the choice as to whether you want to downscale from Ultra HD resolution for ultra-sharp graphics, or run games at 1080p for better performance. This is notably different to the PS4 Pro, which has a habit of hiding these settings from you unless you’ve specifically opted to run their console at Full HD only. Xbox One X vs PS4 Pro – Games and content. Microsoft has also confirmed Xbox One backwards compatibility will roll over to the One X. The service currently has more than 300 titles, which is nothing to sniff at. There will be no One X-exclusive titles with the exception of experiences that support certain virtual reality peripherals – support for which still remains unconfirmed. Like UHD Blu-rays? Xbox One X will support ’em, along with Dolby Atmos. PS4 Pro only supports HD Blu-rays and there’s no Dolby Atmos support. But both consoles will support the HDR 10 standard on both. Xbox One X vs PS4 Pro – Conclusion. Since launch, the PS4 Pro has come into its own with an assortment of improved specs and the newly implemented Boost Mode. Introduced in PS4 update 4.50, this new feature amps up the performance of all PS4 games to varying degrees, enhancing some titles by almost 40%. It’s the best PS4 iteration on the market today, although it’s not entirely worth it for those without a 4K display. Xbox One X is getting close, and Microsoft clearly has some ambitious plans in the pipeline with new features, and IP yet to be announced for the console. However, the kicker is just becoming obvious. The Xbox One X will launch for £450/$499. This puts it some way above the PS4 Pro, but not by a gigantic margin. If you were already saving for a 4K games console, this could change your plans. Especially if the 4K Blu-ray player is something you were thinking over. PS4 Pro vs Xbox One S – Dimensions. The PS4 Pro is quite a bit wider than the Xbox One S, measuring in at 295 x 327 x 55mm where the One S is 229 x 292 x 63.5mm. It’s also longer, but ever so slightly thinner. PS4 Pro vs Xbox One S – Resolution and HDR gaming. Both the PS4 Pro and Xbox One S support HDR (High Dynamic Range). For more on this colourful new feature you can check out our HDR article. The standard PS4 and PS4 Slim also now supports HDR thanks to a post-launch patch. The core difference here isn’t HDR, but instead resolution: the PS4 Pro has the ability to output games at a resolution higher than Full HD. Since release we have seen certain titles render at a native 4K resolution while others settle for an upscaled alternative. If you’re playing in Full HD, you’ll end up with smoother anti-aliasing, meaning the divisions between objects on screen will be much smoother than on the regular PS4. Many of the PS4 Pro supported titles use a 4K “checkerboard” rendering technique that subsequently improves textures and specular effects, making for a cleaner, crisper overall image without putting out a native 4K resolution. Developers are also free to take advantage of the additional power of the Pro however they see fit. In the instance of the recent, excellent Nioh, players were given the choice whether to play the game with a higher resolution or framerate with multiple settings, much like PC players enjoy. The Xbox One S only upscales games to 4K with no enhancements aside from HDR, as mentioned above. PS4 Pro vs Xbox One S – Boost Mode vs Ultra HD Blu-Ray. Features-wise, the two are very similar, but there’s one key differentiator that gives the Xbox One S a massive boost, and that’s its Ultra HD Blu-ray player. Incredibly, despite owning the UHD Blu-ray standard, Sony has chosen not to include the technology in its flagship console. 4K streaming is supported on YouTube and Netflix for both consoles, with more services on the way. When it first launched the PS4 Pro was only capable of improving visuals and performance on titles officially patched by developers. However, this all changed with the arrival of Boost Mode, a new feature introduced in the PS4’s 4.50 firmware update. When activated from the settings menu, this feature will improve performance of all PS4 titles, regardless if they’ve been patched or not. Of course, the results are mixed. PS4 Pro vs Xbox One S – What games can I play on it? Both the PS4 Pro and Xbox One S support all existing games, whether they be physical or digital. Those wishing to upgrade don’t need to worry about re-purchasing their entire library. In terms of games with visual benefits, specific games have been upgraded for both systems to support HDR content, with PS4 Pro being the only one to benefit from higher resolutions at the time of writing. We’ve compiled some specific games for each system below, including some of the things you can expect. Resident Evil 7 – Capcom’s latest survival horror masterpiece benefits hugely from HDR. The virtual reality experience is also enhanced by PS4 Pro with enhanced visuals on PlayStation VR. The Last Guardian – Having launched with support for 4K and 1080p performance modes, Team Ico’s latest effort is a sight to behold. HDR is also supported on the standard PS4. The Last of Us Remastered – Naughty Dog’s modern classic is a great showpiece for HDR. It also supports 4K at 60fps, which is nothing to sniff at. Hitman – HDR support is absent, although both performance and textures are boosted on PS4 Pro. Rise of the Tomb Raider – One of the shining examples of PS4 Pro upgrades. Crystal Dynamics has implemented visual improvements in both 4K and 1080p for Pro owners. Battlefield 1 – The framerate across epic multiplayer battles receives a huge boost thanks to PS4 Pro, helped further by additional terrain detail on each map. Gears of War 4 – Acting as the pioneering example of HDR on Xbox One S, Gears of War 4 was the first of a few select titles to support the feature. Forza Horizon 3 – Heralded as one of 2016’s best racers, Horizon 3 looks even better with a healthy dose of HDR on Xbox One S. Final Fantasy 15 – It turns out HDR is just what Noctis and friends needed, adding an extra helping of colour to the JRPG’s gorgeous open world. ReCore – It may have felt somewhat unfinished and underwhelming, but ReCore was a gorgeous sight to behold at times. The sandy environments are made even better with HDR enabled. The upcoming Boost Mode feature is bound to sway a lot of consumers looking for a genuine difference between the Pro and original PS4. Which of these consoles is best for you can differ depending on your love for fancy visuals, top notch games or 4K video content. If you haven’t found yourself wishing for higher framerates and crisper visuals on your current console than upgrading might not be the right choice, especially if you’re yet to invest in a 4K display. Microsoft has the lead in the 4K gaming sphere with the powerful Xbox One X - a system that's capable of playing games in native 4K resolution. The PS4 Pro, on the other hand, is only capable of upscaling games to 4K but has the advantage of having a stronger stable of first-party exclusive games. Both Sony and Microsoft have approached this generation completely differently – with Sony focusing entirely on games, and Microsoft focusing more on having the Xbox One as more of an all-around home theater device. Sony took an early lead this generation, and has currently sold an astounding 70 million PS4s over the last 4 years – more than doubling Microsoft’s 30 million sales. A pretty big part of the reason that Sony dominated Microsoft was that focus that we mentioned earlier. They put all of their attention on building a great game library – and it’s paid off. Hardware Versions and Design. Both consoles are available in two different versions, one budget and one premium The PS4 has a slim version and a 4K PS4 Pro The Xbox has the Xbox One S and Xbox One X. Both the Xbox One and the PS4 have two separate hardware versions that you can buy right now. This is different than in the past, when each console existed on its own, and lasted an entire generation. The Xbox One S improved on the design of the original Xbox One by cutting down a lot of the heft, and removing the gigantic power brick – instead opting for an internal power supply. It measures at just 11.6 x 8.9 x 2.5 inches and unlike the previous version includes a 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray player and can even upscale 1080p games to 4K, as long as you have a TV that can support it. The Xbox One X might be heftier than the Xbox One S, but it’s still considerably smaller than the original Xbox One, measuring in at 11.81 x 9.44 x 2.36 inches and weighing around 8.4 lbs and also opted for an internal power supply. This is the high-powered version of the Xbox One, that allows for native 4K gaming and, much like the Xbox One S, includes a 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray player, something that not even the PS4 Pro can boast. Then starting out the PS4 side of the equation, the PS4 Slim is straight up the smallest of the major consoles available right now, measuring in at 10.4 x 11.3 x 1.5 inches and serving as the baseline PS4 for most consumers, serving as a complete replacement for the original PS4. It doesn’t allow for even 4K video playback, but it can still play the entire killer PS4 game library. The PS4 was the original 4K console, coming out an entire year before the Xbox One X – even if the ‘X’ eventually outpowered it. It measures in at 12.8 x 11.6 x 2.1 inches. While the PS4 Pro does to at least some extent support native 4K gaming, it doesn’t include a 4K Ultra-HD Blu-Ray Player, an omission that has caught Sony some flak over the last year or so. You can't upgrade Xbox One's internal hard drive, but you can on the PS4. Both consoles support the use of external hard drives. The Xbox One has more ports on its rear. Depending on how your gaming setup is organised, the connectivity of your console could be an extremely important detail. Both the Xbox One S and X have identical ports, each including two HDMI ports, one for receiving an input from a cable or satellite box, and one that inputs to your TV. On top of those, they’ve each got two USB 3 ports, IR outputs, optical audio out, Ethernet ports and, of course, the power cable – which is compatible with both versions of the Xbox. However, due to the quick and tragic downfall of Kinect, if you want to use a Kinect with either version of the Xbox One you’ll have to go out and get an adapter. The PS4 Pro and PS4 Slim have similar inputs, although they are slightly different. Each has a single HDMI out, a single USB port in the back (two in the front), an Ethernet port, and power. The only difference between the Pro and the Slim is that the Pro has an Optical Audio out, while the Slim drops it. One of the most compelling things about the connectivity of the PS4, however, is that both versions allow users to swap out the internal hard drive with one of their choice. All versions of both the Xbox One and PS4 support 802.11 ac Wi-Fi and gigabit Ethernet. So no matter which console you decide on, you won’t have to worry about network compatibility. PS4 and Xbox One are void of remarkable characteristics on the front. There's a Blu-ray/DVD combo drive to the left (which can play Ultra HD Blu-rays on the Xbox One S and Xbox One X) and their respective, muted-color logos to the right. XBOX ONE S VS PS4 PRO – PRICE. The three Xbox One S models are priced at £349 for the 2TB, £277 for the 1TB and £192 for the 500GB model, the latter two including a game. Bundle-less deals can be found but largely y ou can buy bundles FIFA 17, Battlefield 1 , Minecraft and Gears of War 4. The PS4 Pro comes in one flavour and it's £340 – and that's for a 1TB hard drive, too. XBOX ONE S VS PS4 PRO – SPECS. The big difference between the Xbox One S and the PS4 Pro will be the specs. Sony's PS4 Pro features an eight-core x86-64 AMD "Jaguar" CPU with unknown clock speed, 4.2 teraflops AMD Radeon-based graphics card and 8GB GDDR5 RAM and 1TB storage. That's quite the graphics and speed upgrade for the PS4 Pro compared to the standard PS4, making it more powerful and able to offer much better graphics. It'll be capable of supporting 4K output for streaming services like Amazon and Netflix, but also native 4K gaming and 4K upscaling for full HD titles. Sadly, it lacks a 4K Blu-Ray player, so you'll have to rely on streaming services for TV and movie content in glorious 4K resolutions. The Xbox One S on the other hand retains the graphics of the original Xbox One, albeit with a slight graphics boost. When it comes to games PS4 Pro is significantly more powerful than the Xbox One S – even though both consoles have support for HDR in games, which makes them much more realistically coloured than normal games. But you will need an ultra expensive 4K and HDR-compatible TV to reap the benefits. Microsoft's newest console does support 4K output for streaming services, it just won't run games in 4K. It also has a 4K Blu-Ray player – something that the PS4 Pro is lacking. XBOX ONE S VS PS4 PRO – DESIGN. One of the best features of the Xbox One S is its design. It's 40% smaller than the original Xbox One and despite its size, it's finally got an integrated power brick. Comparatively, the Xbox One S is also smaller than the original PS4 by a hair. The Xbox One S isn't just smaller all round, it's also capable of standing vertically. Sadly, the vertical stand is only included with the 2TB model, so if you buy the 1TB or 500GB version, you'll need to buy the stand separately. We love the perforated design of the Xbox One, especially as it comes in that rather sexy and sleek white as standard. There are other limited edition colour schemes available, but the white is the classic Xbox One S colour. Both the PS4 Pro and PS4 Slim have revamped designs, with much more rounded corners and a matte finish, rather than the two-tone design of the original PS4. The PS4 Pro is actually substantially bigger than the PS4 and the PS4 Slim in all directions because it's got an additional layer on the top to help make space for the more powerful internal hardware – think Big Mac vs Cheeseburger for a handy comparison. Or just check out the image above which has the PS4, PS4 Pro and PS4 Slim in a line-up - yes it is that big. The PS4 Pro can stand vertically too like the Xbox One S, but unlike Microsoft's latest console the stand is sold separately for £16.99. Sony's 4K beast does come with an additional USB port and the optical audio output missing from the PS4 Slim, which is great news for our audio equipment. XBOX ONE S VS PS4 PRO – GAMES. Both the Xbox One S and PS4 Pro still play all the games available on the PS4 and Xbox One. The idea is that they're both an iterative step along the console timeline, so all your existing games will be compatible if you choose to upgrade, and anyone who's looking to buy the Xbox One S or PS4 Pro will still be able to catch up on the existing library of games. You'll also be able to play multiplayer with Xbox One gamers if you're on the Xbox One S and PS4 players if you're on the PS4 Pro. The only difference for Xbox One S owners is that you'll be able to utilise the HDR functionality on games that support it – such as Gears of War 4 and Forza Horizon 3 – if you've got an HDR TV. If you've got the PS4 Pro, there are a few key differences for games. They include higher and more stable frame rates, but also the ability to run games in HDR and in native 4K and upscaled 4K resolutions. There is one caveat to that though, in that Sony has admitted the "majority" of PS4 Pro games will be upscaled to 4K rather than natively. "I would say the majority will be upscaled - at least based on the game portfolio I have seen to date," said Sony's Andrew House to Digital Spy . However, there are plenty of games getting the 4K and HDR treatment, with over 40 of them being patched at launch: XBOX ONE S VS PS4 PRO – VIRTUAL REALITY. The PS4 Pro is much better equipped for the PS VR than the current PS4 thanks to its improved processing and graphical grunt. The original PS4 will still be able to run the PS VR and its associated games, but the PS4 Pro will give you a much better and more comfortable gameplay experience. The social screen, aka what anyone else in the house can see on the TV screen when you're deep in VR land, is vastly improved over what's available on the either of the standard PS4 consoles, although it's still not HD resolution or full screen. VR game developers are also starting to issues PS4 Pro specific patches for PS VR games running on Sony's latest console. However, we will caveat this by saying that you'll need to disconnect the PS VR if you want to play games on the PS4 Pro in 4K or with HDR. That's because the PS VR's processing unit can't process either of these new display technologies. That makes moving between "normal" PS4 games and PS VR titles a bit of a faff, especially if your PS4 Pro is wedged in any kind of entertainment unit where the back isn't easily accessible. The Xbox One S however doesn't support any kind of virtual reality headset at present. That's because Microsoft is designing the forthcoming Xbox Project Scorpio with 4K gaming and virtual reality in mind. So you'll have to wait until 2017 to play VR titles on Xbox One - probably. XBOX ONE S VS PS4 PRO – THE VERDICT. If you want 4K gaming then you need to get the PS4 Pro or wait until 2017 for the Project Scorpio, but we have a horrible feeling it's going to be prohibitively expensive. However, if you're looking for the best 4K home entertainment system – Blu-Ray included – the Xbox One S is the one to go for. We don’t know who’s copying who, but Xbox One and PlayStation 4 seem to be following very similar paths. Both have new powered-up iterations coming in the shape of Xbox One Scorpio and PS4 Neo. And both have slim versions out this autumn: Xbox One S, and the new slim PS4. But these new consoles aren’t carbon copies of one another. If you’re still deciding whether to buy an Xbox One S or a slim PS4, you’ll want to know which new features have been added – or missed out – on each. So that’s exactly what we’ve done in this post. Here’s our head-to-head match-up of the ‘S’ and the ‘slim’. Size comparison: slim PS4 wins. The most noticeable difference in these new console revisions is their smaller size. This mainly benefits Microsoft and Sony by reducing their costs. It also means these new consoles will take up less space under your telly. So which is smaller? Here are the dimensions: Original Xbox One : 333 x 274 x 79 mm (biggest) Xbox One S : 296 x 231 x 65 mm (around 38% smaller than OG) Original PS4 : 275 x 305 x 53 mm (about the same as Xbox One S) Slim PS4 : 264 x 288 x 39 mm (smallest, around 33% smaller than OG) The slim PS4 is the clear winner here. Not only is it a third smaller than the old PS4, it’s also smaller than Xbox One S by a similar margin. Power: Small bump for Xbox One S. Xbox One S does offer small improvements to the frame rates of some games, thanks to a faster GPU clock speed. Microsoft itself describes these as “pretty minor”. We don’t know yet if the slim PS4 does the same, since it hasn’t been officially revealed yet. But if you want a real power boost for your Xbox One and PS4 games, wait for Scorpio and Neo. 4K video: Xbox One S has it, slim PS4 doesn’t. One of the best features of Xbox One S is playback of 4K Ultra-HD video, including 4K Blu-ray discs and streaming content. The new console can also upscale HD content to 4K. (You’ll need a 4K telly of course). The new slim PS4 sadly has none of this. Maybe Neo will. New controllers all round. Both new consoles come with newly improved controllers in the box. The new Xbox controller is a beautifully sleek update, made from better quality parts. It also adds longer signal range and new Bluetooth connectivity, so you can use it on PC and other devices. The new DualShock 4 for PlayStation looks very similar to the old one, but it adds a wired USB connection for reduced lag and the lightbar is now visible on the front. Cut connectors: Xbox Kinect and PS4 optical audio. It’s not all new additions, however. Both new consoles remove fairly significant hardware features that were in the original systems. On Xbox One S, it’s the Kinect port. Maybe few people will care, but you’ll need an adapter if you want to use Kinect with the S. On slim PS4, optical audio out has gone. Which are you buying? In terms of improvements over their original versions , we think Xbox One S slightly edges the slim PS4 thanks to its 4K video playback and smart new controller.
