Microsoft’s revised Xbox controller now works with the Steam Link. Valve has updated its Steam Link in-home game-streaming device, and it has added compatibility with the Xbox One S controller. You can now use this excellent revision, which feels nicer, with a USB cable or over Bluetooth. You’ll have to update the Xbox One S controller by connecting it to your Xbox One or PC, but then it should work as wireless controller directly through your Steam Link. This fixes one of the main problems with the gamepad, and it adds even more options for controlling your PC games on your TV for the Steam Link. I tested it out, and I was able to get the controller working without any hassle. Here’s how to connect it: Boot up your Steam Link. Let it update. Head into Bluetooth in the settings. Hit the small connection button on top of your Xbox One S controller until it blinks. Find “Xbox Wireless Controller” from the list of devices. Select it (you’ll need a controller or mouse that is already connected). Wait for the controller’s light to stop blinking. You’re good to go. If your connection gets stuck at “paired,” then you should make sure the gamepad is fully updated itself. You can also try deleting the controller from the list and then trying to connect it again. Because there is more than one form to connect your controller to Steam Link, is specified different forms to connect it: Native: Works wirelessly with Bluetooth or proprietary protocol (like the Steam Controller). You don't need any additional hardware to use it. It will be displayed as a XInput Game Controller. Adapter: You need to purchase an adapter to use it wireless, usually the same one you use it on your PC. Steam Link recognizes the adapter and send the inputs as XInput. USB: You can connect the controller wired to the system and will be recognized. VirtualHere (VH): Beta builds of Steam Link firmware can share one USB port with the host computer through. It requires extra configuration by the user. Since it's a license limitation to use more than one USB device, users can't use more than one device through VirtualHere. "Xbox One or 360 Wired Controller" can either mean: Wireless Xbox360 for windows using the dongle. "Possibly" but again who knows really. This sort of assumes MS even comes out with the wireless dongles. Note tha their PC support for the Xbox One controllers has been, to put it charitably, god damn slow and awful. I mean how long did it take to even get basic windows drivers out? I wouldn't hold my breath for 'end of year' for that dongle. How to connect an Xbox One Wireless Controller to a Windows PC. Many PC games let you play with an Xbox Wireless Controller instead of a keyboard or mouse. You can connect your controller to a Windows PC by using a USB cable, the Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows, or over Bluetooth. Some PCs also come with Xbox Wireless built in, so you can connect a controller directly without an adapter. Windows 10 PC. Plug a USB charging cable into the front of the controller and plug the other end into your PC. The $150 Xbox One Elite is an excellent device, but it wasn’t compatible with Valve’s SteamOS (it only worked with Windows PCs and Xbox One). That has changed now, and — as long as you have the Elite plugged in with a USB cable — it’ll function with both a Steam Machine or the Steam Link. Valve is the company that owns and operates the Steam digital-distribution portal for PC game, and SteamOS is its Linux-based operating system for gaming. Valve has updated that OS to version 2.60, and that included the proper drivers to run the Elite joypad. We tried it out, and the Elite works exactly like you would expect. You can still use the back paddles to replace pressing face buttons or clicking the analog sticks in. You can edit your Elite’s profile on the Xbox One or Xbox app on your PC and then bring that over to your SteamOS box. And having support for the Elite makes the Steam Link and Steam Machines a bit more functional. It’s still a bummer that you can’t plug a wireless dongle into the Steam Machine or the Steam Link to connect the Elite (or any Xbox One controller) wirelessly. But that has nothing to do with Valve or SteamOS. Microsoft controls what that dongle will work with, and Valve explained to GamesBeat that it has no idea whether Microsoft will ever support the SteamOS or Linux. Microsoft said, for now, it is focusing on Windows. The company did expand support from Windows 10 only to Windows 7 and 8 in December. Steam Link.
