Pre-order Xbox One X in a limited Project Scorpio Edition. The rumors were true. Microsoft is marking the launch of the Xbox One X by starting pre-orders for a limited Project Scorpio Edition for the console. It'll cost the same $499/£450 as the standard model, but this is more than a rehash of the Day One system that commemorated the Xbox One launch in 2013. On top of Project Scorpio lettering on the console and controller, the machine gets a "sophisticated and dynamic" pattern and an exclusive vertical stand to flaunt your early adopter status. Even the packaging has a twist -- it harkens back to the 2001-era Xbox. You can pre-order from retailers right now (including Microsoft's own store, Best Buy and Gamestop), and you'll probably want to consider it if you were already bent on getting the Xbox One X come November 7th. It's possible that stock will linger around, but we wouldn't count on it if there's a rush. As it is, there will be something if you're content with "just" 1080p gaming. On top of the Minecraft console, Microsoft is prepping Xbox One S Middle-earth: Shadow of War bundles that include the fantasy slasher as well as 1 month of Xbox Game Pass and 2 weeks of Xbox Live Gold. Both models arrive on October 10th, when they'll be available in nearly every market at $279 for a 500GB bundle and $349 for the 1TB system. Follow all the latest news live from Gamescom here! Microsoft unveils Xbox One X limited edition and Xbox One S bundles. Above: Microsoft's Xbox One X limited editions. Microsoft wants you to feel special. So, it a limited edition of the Xbox One X game console that debuts on November 7, as well as new limited editions of the Xbox One S console. Microsoft also opened preorders for these new editions after its press event ahead of the Gamescom event in Germany. In an interview with GamesBeat, Xbox chief marketing officer Mike Nichols said the company will debut a Project Scorpio limited edition of the Xbox One X. Project Scorpio was the original code name for the console, which features 4K visuals, Xbox One compatibility, and 6 teraflops of computing power. The Project Scorpio edition has a unique wireless controller, an “Easter egg” on the console, and subtle paint differences. The words “Project Scorpio” are printed on both the fan-inspired console and the controller. It will cost $500. “It has special packaging that harks back to Xbox lineage,” Nichols said. “We really have a product family with Xbox One and Xbox One X.” While Microsoft delayed the launch of its Crackdown 3 game until 2018, Nichols said the console would ship with Forza Motorsport 7 and 100 “enhanced Xbox One” games, which are being modified for the better visuals. (Nichols did not say how many of the enhanced games would be ready on November 7.) Enhanced games will include Halo 5, ReCore: Definitive Edition, Fallout 4, Rise of the Tomb Raider, NBA 2K18, FIFA 18, Star Wars Battlefront II, Disneyland Adventures, Rush: A Disney-Pixar Adventure, Zoo Tycoon, and Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus. Above: Mike Nichols, chief marketing officer at Xbox, at E3 2017. “It’s easy for developers to take advantage of the system,” Nichols said. Microsoft is also releasing a Middle-Earth: Shadow of War bundle for the Xbox One S. The bundle will come with the new Warner Bros. game and will be available in October. Microsoft will have a Minecraft limited edition version of the Xbox One S, too. The Minecraft edition has a blocky grass-colored chassis, and it will come with either a custom Minecraft Creeper green controller or a Minecraft pig pink controller (the latter in honor of the pigs in the game). It will feature redstone elements in a “skin pack” and in its packaging, as Redstone is a basic resource in Minecraft. The console will feature the Minecraft Creeper, Minecraft system sounds, vertical stand, and a transparent underside with Redstone circuit accents. It will be available on October 3, 2017, in all markets except China and Brazil. Microsoft is also extending its Xbox Design Lab, where you can order your own custom controllers, to 24 new countries. Nichols also said that Player Unknown Battlegrounds will available not only on the Xbox One X (as previously announced). It will also be available this fall on the Xbox One. PUBG has sold more than 8 million copies on Steam Early Access in the past four months. “We will work with them to see [that the] title is as big and successful on console,” Nichols said. Microsoft also is adding seven new games to the catalog for the Xbox Game Pass subscription. Those games include Fable 2 and ReCore: Definitive Edition. It will also be available in eight new markets: Argentina, Brazil, Israel, Saudi Arabia, Slovakia, South Africa, Turkey, and the United Arab Emirates. Asked about the Crackdown 3 delay and the scarcity of new titles at launch, Nichols said Crackdown 3 is very ambitions and “we want to make sure the game is ready to go.” He added, “It’s a different kind of console launch. All Xbox One games play on Xbox One X, and many are being enhanced for Xbox One X.” Cuphead will also be ready for the Xbox One X (as well as the Xbox One), and spring 2018 exclusives coming are Crackdown 3, Sea of Thieves, and State of Decay 2. Sea of Thieves, by the way, will have cross play between online players on the PC and the console. As to supplies at launch, Nichols said, “We feel good about supply. We do expect demand to exceed supply. We expect to launch in all markets. We will do our best to replenish the initial quantity as fast as we can.” For PC gamers, Microsoft said it is bringing more features — such as Mixer broadcasting, updates to Game Mode, Game Bar, and added support for HDR screenshots. Among the titles debuting soon for Xbox One and Xbox One X are Assassin’s Creed Origins, Super Lucky’s Tale, Disneyland Adventures, Surviving Mars (coming in 2018), Zoo Tycoon: Ultimate Animal Edition, Rush: A Disney-Pixar Adventure, Jurassic World Evolution, and Halo Wars 2: Awakening the Nightmare. Microsoft also said it has shipped 600 ID@Xbox independent games and 1,500 more are in the works. gamescom 2017: Pre-Order the Xbox One X Project Scorpio Edition Now. Limited-Edition Minecraft Xbox One S Available to Pre-Order. The big news coming out of Gamescom 2017 yesterday was pre-orders for the Xbox One X going live as well as a Project Scorpio edition of the console being made available. But the Xbox One X is clearly aimed at the high-end, and those with 4K TVs. Microsoft needs younger generations buying its games consoles, too, so we're also getting a limited edition Minecraft-themed Xbox One S. A standard Xbox One S 1TB model costs $349.99, but you can easily pick one up for around $299. Microsoft's Xbox One S 1TB Minecraft Limited Edition Bundle can be pre-ordered for $399 and launches on October 3. In return for your cash you'll get both the console and Xbox wireless controller carrying a Minecraft theme. Also in the box is an Xbox One S vertical stand, a digital code to download a copy of Minecraft and Minecraft Redstone Pack bonus content, a one month Xbox Game Pass trial, and 14-day Xbox Live Gold trial. The limited edition controller can be purchased separately for $74.99 and will be available from September 5. It can be used with both the Xbox One and Windows 10 PCs. Although Minecraft fans will be tempted by the Minecraft-themed hardware, the price premium makes it hard to recommend. Microsoft wants $399 when you can pick up the same 1TB model Xbox One S without the custom paint job for $299 (usually with a game bundled). Buying Minecraft separately costs $15, and the vertical stand is $10. Even the Minecraft wireless controller costs $15 more, with standard pads going for $60. If you can live without the Minecraft theme, then I'd suggest buying a standard 1TB Xbox One S, a copy of Minecraft, and a vertical stand. That way you'll have an extra $75 to spend on other games, an extra controller, and/or a full year of Xbox Live Gold. It's also worth noting that Microsoft is currently offering an Xbox One S 500GB Minecraft bundle for just $249. About the Author. Matthew is PCMag's UK-based editor and news reporter. Earlier this week, Microsoft finally opened preorders for its upcoming flagship console, the Xbox One X. Despite being officially unveiled over two months ago as a part of E3 2017, orders for the device were held while awaiting approval from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). Now, after being officially certified and cleared for trade, Microsoft is now letting eager buyers to lay down cash ahead of time, to guarantee a console for the November 7 launch. When preorders were announced as a part of Microsoft's Gamescom 2017 live show, the company also unveiled a Project Scorpio special edition variant of the console. This limited-run serves as a bonus for fans who've followed the console's development over the past year, with a distinct aesthetic from the standard black version. Following the announcement of the console, we were given the opportunity to get hands-on, providing an idea of what to expect from the device this fall. Upon first glance, the most outstanding trait of the Project Scorpio console's design is its sharp green branding, which pays homage to the console's previous Project Scorpio codename. When the concept for what became the Xbox One X was initially teased, Microsoft referred to the device under the Scorpio tag, which eventually stuck with consumers leading up to this year's reveal. While the Xbox One X name will be used exclusively going forward, this unique branding is a nice throwback for those who followed the console from the very beginning. Unlike the standard SKU, which is only offered in a simple textured matte black at this time, this version of the console features a gradual gradient into a dark gray. The protruding gray gradient is comprised of small painted circles and without any top cooling vents of the top of the device, this smoothly transitions across the console's body. This asymmetry to the console's design is a discreet touch but adds a unique styling to the body without compromising its sleek aesthetic. A unique Xbox One controller design also ships with the Project Scorpio edition, bearing similar branding to the console itself. The green Project Scorpio text falls vertically down the middle of the controller, on a smooth black faceplate. All buttons, the directional pad, and thumb sticks are also tinted with a deep black. As one of the recently revised Xbox One S controllers, this variant sports mildly textured grips and Bluetooth connectivity. All Project Scorpio edition units additionally ship alongside a vertical stand, allowing the console to safely sit upright, despite its offset form factor. For the price of a regular Xbox One X console you'll be getting a vertical stand for no extra cost, however, it has no unique design to match the gray side of the console it sits against. Xbox platform Corporate Vice President, Mike Ybarra, has confirmed this stand will also be available for purchase separately, similarly to the stand for Xbox One S. As for the hardware under the hood – the Xbox One X Project Scorpio Edition is unchanged from the standard version of the console. Right now, a 1TB hard drive is the only size of internal storage available across consoles, assumedly due to support for third-party external hard drives. Driving the console are eight CPU cores clocked at 2.3GHz, 12GB of GDDR5 RAM and a GPU packing 40 Radeon compute units running at 1172 MHz. This gives existing Xbox One games a fair amount of overhead while allowing specific "Xbox One X Enhanced" games to achieve improved visuals. For those looking to purchasing an Xbox One X Project Scorpio Edition, the console appears to have sold out across a majority of big retailers. While certain storefronts are still securing additional stock and re-opening preorders, you may need to look further afield to secure one of the devices for launch day. Microsoft will assumedly open pre-orders for regular versions of the console later down the line, however exact details are yet to be provided. What do you think of the new Xbox One X Project Scorpio Edition? Do you like the new design? Or would you prefer the simple matte black console? Make sure to drop your thoughts in the comments. Xbox One S Minecraft Limited Edition Bundle Review. This Limited-Edition Xbox Is the Video Game Console We've All Been Waiting For. Last year, a friend recommended that I spend some quality time with Minecraft to get my mind off of the constant Trump news cycle and onto something marginally more productive. As a lifelong gamer, I gave it a shot — and was completely underwhelmed by the complicated controls that maneuvered my avatar across the screen on my iPhone and laptop. Regardless of how many times I tried to change the controller settings to something easier to process, I was quite certain that the wildly popular block-building game, while visually appealing and a great way to waste time, was not for me. That is, until I discovered the altogether different experience that comes with playing the game on a console, and not on a web-connected device. tl;dr: The limited-edition Minecraft Xbox One S made a Minecraft believer out of me — and it's a console that has the potential to turn even the most video-game-averse individual into a diehard fan. But let's take it one step at a time. What is Minecraft and why do people love it so much? "Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures," or so the official one-liner for the game reads. But Minecraft is, in far more broad terms, the most appealing gateway to STEM that a group of Swedish coders could have ever possibly imagined when they first released it in 2009. In a 2016 profile, The New York Times referred to those early preteen denizens of Minecraft as "The Minecraft Generation," describing in great detail how young people were using tech savvy and coding knowledge in order to "win" at Minecraft. Yes, the game is fundamentally a quest to mine resources with which to ensure your survival — shelter and protection are required to fight the baddies that come at you in the night — but there's a far more complicated level of know-how that's required in order to truly best play the game. Redstone, the Minecraft equivalent of electricity, can be mined easily by anyone — but it takes a certain kind of savvy to manhandle the engineering that's required to make it work. It's that quest for making the best, the most elaborate, the most intricate that really creates a Minecraft-lover out of your average gamer — and to say that it's addictive once you've figured it out would be a dramatic understatement. What is so different about playing the game on a console versus on a phone, tablet, or computer? There are two main reasons that the experience is so different. One is that it's much, much easier to play the game on a standard controller than it is to use your keyboard or fingers, and having some distance between your eyes and the screen is always a big plus. The second — and more important — reason is that it moves the game away from a solo experience and toward something you can play with friends, partners, or family. Sure, you could always play in co-op mode over your various devices, but having a split-screen game while you're sitting next to someone is so much more fun (and challenging!). How exactly does playing with someone else work? Depending on how competitive you are, you can either work in tandem — collecting resources, building up a town or village or city — or compete for the better house with the more advanced technology. Either way, it's easy to explore a map with someone else when you're playing in the console version, though it's highly recommended that you both have wireless controllers to make sure that you're not tied down to the console! What are the visual differences between the Minecraft Limited Edition Xbox One S and the regular Xbox One? Behold the true beauty that is the Minecraft console (and its matching Creeper-themed controller): Can the Minecraft console play other games, too? This might be my favorite part of the limited-edition console and what makes it so accessible. In addition to having a 1 TB hard drive, the Xbox One S itself comes with a free month of Xbox Game Pass and a 14-day trial of Xbox Live Gold. In other words: you've got several weeks to experiment with all of the games you've heard your friends talk about on your own, without any upfront commitment to actually buying the game in full. And it's not just recent titles, either — you can explore the wide range of options here. Suffice it to say that after years of resisting certain games on the basis that I didn't want to throw down the money on something I might not use, having a month to give all of those games test runs has resulted in my having quite a few new favorite games that aren't even remotely Minecraft-related. Can I play Minecraft with friends who don't have an Xbox but play on PE or PS4? Thanks to the recent Better Together update, now you can play cross-platform with most other types of devices, aside from the Nintendo Switch (the update hasn't rolled out to it yet, sadly, though it is in the works!). What else does the console do? Just as with any other Xbox console, the Minecraft edition can play all your favorite apps like Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, and Spotify — making the console more than just a way to play games, but to access all of your favorite media all in one place. What sold you on being a Minecraft fan? On a (very) personal level, having a low-commitment, low-violence game like Minecraft to play with my significant other has been a welcome addition to my household. It's also worth noting that as someone who has always been more of a Nintendo-and-Playstation gal, the price point and ability to test other games has meant that we've got a whole host of games to play as we head into the Winter months — something I've never really had the opportunity to experiment with, and couldn't be more excited about. It really is the console I've been waiting for Microsoft to come out with – and after decades of resisting the Halo-and-Borderlands-induced madness, it's made an Xbox fan out of me. So how can I get my hands on one? The Xbox One S Minecraft Limited Edition Bundle retails at $399 and hits stores on Oct. 3. But don't wait to pick one up — limited edition does in fact mean that there's a finite number of consoles being produced, so they're likely to sell out sooner rather than later.
