Mario Kart PS4 and Xbox One – Can We Expect One? Super Mario Kart games have always been one of the most lovable and enjoyable games on Nintendo consoles. Due to its popularity among gamers, Super Mario Kart has been able to develop into a series of titles that continue to grow to this day. Unfortunately for many, it doesn’t look like we will be seeing a Mario Kart PS4 release or even a Mario Kart Xbox One release in the near future as all of the current Mario Kart games are exclusive to the various Nintendo consoles with the latest one being released on the Wii U. There is definitely a demand for Super Mario Kart games on other consoles as players don’t wish to spend $400 to buy a console just to play one game. Owners of the PS4 and Xbox One may have game titles such as Need for Speed, Project Cars, and Driveclub but these games just aren’t as wacky and fun as the Mario Kart games we love to play. So why exactly doesn’t the PS4 and Xbox One have their own versions of Mario Kart games? We’ve got a few theories as to why. Other genres shadow over racing games. With the rise of many popular titles on both PS4 and Xbox One, racing games are not given that much attention compared to other genres like First Person Shooters and Action-Adventures . Though there are some good titles out there such as Need for Speed and Driveclub, it seems like other game genres take the spotlight on the PS4 and Xbox One which further reduced the chance on seeing a Super Mario Kart PS4 type of game. Games today are serious, dramatic and/or dark. Popular games today are usually involved in either a dramatic and heartwarming atmosphere, a dark desolate world, or a place where it’s just serious business ( The Witcher 3 , Fallout 4 , GTA5 , etc). Although some games do have their own way of comedy such as Drake’s witty comments in Uncharted , many of the most anticipated games of 2016 usually have a touch of realism to them that it makes throwing in cartoon cliches a little difficult. These storylines might just deliver more bang for the buck, hence, developers focusing efforts here rather than games similar to Mario Kart. The games did not fare well compared to Mario Kart games. Compared to their Nintendo rivals, Sony, Microsoft, or any third party developers have yet to develop a title which can become as popular as Mario Kart games. Although there was a title available for both PS3 and Xbox 360 called Sonic All-Stars Racing Transformed that came close to Mario Kart’s feel but didn’t quite catch the players attention. In the past, the PS1 had Crash Team Racing with also gave a similar feeling but we can only keep our fingers crossed that we can see a Crash Team Racing PS4 remake in the future. They’re still working on it, possibly… Since there are numerous titles on the way to both the PS4 and Xbox One, it might be possible that a contender against Mario Kart 8 is in development. Back when the PS3 was the latest console, Sony had already attempted an emulation of Nintendo’s Smash Bros when they created PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale. PlayStation All-Stars could also be created as a racing game as there are a bunch of characters we all know and love that could provide us with hours and hours of fun. Unfortunately, a Mario Kart PS4 or Mario Kart Xbox One release is unlikely but let’s hope that titles like Crash Team Racing and PlayStation All-Stars make a comeback and provide us with some whacky and fun racing. We’ve seen retailers confusing video game platforms before, and the Switch is no exception. One retailer believes that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is coming to the Xbox One, and urges you to pre-order it. What’s interesting in this case is that this isn’t the first time this retailer has confused Switch with the Xbox One. They also did it right before the Switch launched. Or maybe one of the employees loves to troll gamers. Funny thing is, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe would probably sell 5 million units on the Xbox One. As expected, new games on new systems helped the video game industry bring in a ton of cash in May. Gamers spent $586 million on new physical gaming software and hardware in May, according to industry-tracking research firm The NPD Group. That is up 52 percent from $387 million in 2013. That’s largely due to the massive success of publisher Ubisoft’s Watch Dogs. That open-world hacking game is the French company’s fastest-selling product over a 24-hour period ever. It also racked up more than 4 million in sales in its first week. Nintendo also contributed significantly to May’s software numbers with the introduction of Mario Kart 8. The publisher revealed it sold 1.2 million copies in just three days. What’s most impressive about Mario Kart 8 and Watch Dogs is that both topped the chart for all of May despite debuting at the end of the month. Mario Kart 8 made it to No. 2 with only two days of sales. New releases had a good month all around. MLB 14: The Show and Wolfenstein: The New Order both released in May and made it into the top five. They even outsold a resurgent Minecraft, which now has physical version on both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. This should keep the block-building phenomenon in the top 10 for a few more months. Beyond the top 5, the only other new game on the chart is the 3DS’s Kirby: Triple Deluxe, which hit the system in early May. This is another example of the power of Nintendo’s franchises. “Collectively, May 2014 launches sold 800 percent more in dollar sales than May 2013 launches did in their respective launch month,” said Callahan. “New launches represented 50 percent of dollar sales this month, which compared to only 9 percent for new launches in May 2013.” If you’re looking for a trend in the top 10, I would point out that the PS4 version of Watch Dogs, Wolfenstein, Spider-Man, NBA 2K14, and Call of Duty outsold their Xbox One counterparts. At the Electronic Entertainment Expo tradeshow in Los Angeles last week, Microsoft was all about games — and this sales report shows one of the reasons why. NPD doesn’t spill a ton of statistics for individual platforms. It’s up to the companies themselves to provide that info. We’re working on getting a comment from Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo, but the NPD did confirm that Sony is still on top. “May 2014 marked the fifth consecutive month that Sony’s PlayStation 4 led hardware sales,” said Callahan. May marks the last month where PlayStation 4 will have a clear price advantage over the Xbox One. Sony sells its device for $400, and Microsoft started selling an Xbox One that comes without the Kinect camera on June 9 for $400. Previously, the console sold for $500 with the Kinect. So far, the PlayStation 4 has built a steady lead on the Xbox One worldwide. After both debuting in November, Sony has sold 7 million PlayStaiton 4s to customers as of early April. Microsoft, meanwhile, has only shipped that it shipped 5 million Xbox Ones to retailers as of April, which means fewer than that have reached the hands of gamers. The Wii U, on the other hand, went on sale in November 2012, and it is only at around 6.2 million as of March.
