6 Xbox One games to help you forget that Mario guy.
Mario is here. Again. One of the most talked about games of the year is Super Mario Odyssey on the Nintendo Switch.
And that's fine if you have a Switch. Much of Mario's appeal is that it's both nostalgia-filled and family friendly. Xbox One has plenty of games that fit that bill, and here are six we've picked out to help you forget about that guy in the red hat.
Sonic Mania.
Back in the day, Nintendo had Mario and Sega had Sonic. While Mario has grown up in his latest adventure, Sonic Mania is a retro throwback to the good old days of 2D side-scrolling platformers.
Only its now in high definition and running at a super-slick 60 FPS. We'll always have room for you, Sonic. Especially for $20.
Shovel Knight.
You'd be forgiven thinking that Shovel Knight was an old game brought back to life for the new generation consoles. But you'd be wrong. Shovel Knight is a challenging platformer with the appeal of old-school 8-bit pixel art graphics.
You're a knight, with a shovel, on a quest to save Shield Knight. For fans of retro platformers, you can't do much better than this. All for the low price of $25.
Rare Replay.
One retro game is fun, but how about 30? Rare Replay is a glorious trip through the archives of one of the most loved game studios ever to have existed.
It's not all the Rare classics (looking at you Goldeneye), but you'll find the likes of Banjo Kazooie in here along with some true classics, like Battletoads. One of the best value packages you can buy on the Xbox One today. At $30 you're paying $1 per game as well. And that's amazing value.
Games like Mario have a unique visual attraction, and that's true of Unravel. One of the most beautiful platformers we've seen in recent years, EA's Unravel sees you take on the role of Yarny. Who is made of yarn.
Mario has his mushrooms, but he can't unravel his entire body to overcome an obstacle. Yarny can. $20 well spent.
Super Lucky's Tale.
Launching on November 7, 2017, Super Lucky's Take is a 3D platformer that sees you take on the role of Lucky the fox who's on a quest to help his sister rescue the book of souls from that no-good villain Jinx.
It's fun for all ages and packed with mini-games to keep the fun rolling as the hours pass by. And it's only $30.
If you want exploration, you want Minecraft. You might not get the Nintendo exclusive Mario skin pack on the Xbox, but that's OK, there are still plenty to choose from.
Mine, build, craft, explore, kill zombies and creepers, Minecraft is adored by hundreds of millions of adults and children alike. Its blocky charm is irresistible, but it's also a game that will keep you coming back for years. Maybe even decades, who knows! Better still is that it's only $20 for the base game.
If all else fails, just buy a Switch.
Xbox has a lot of great games, including a wealth of fun platformers, old-school names brought back to life and retro-inspired new adventures. But there is only one Mario. If that's what you want, go on and grab a Nintendo Switch.

Nintendo's Super Mario Odyssey has taken home the top honour at Gamescom's awards show. The upcoming Switch game won the Best of Gamescom award, organisers have announced. It won four others: the "Most Wanted" Consumer Award, the Best Nintendo Switch Console Game, Best Action Game, and Best Family Game.
Odyssey launches this October exclusively for Switch. The console itself continues to be hard to find, but Nintendo recently promised to "ramp up" production of the console heading into the busy holiday season.
Destiny 2 won Best Multiplayer Game and Best Social/Online Game, while the Xbox One X took home the award for Best Hardware. The award for best sports game went to PES 2018, while Best Racing game went to Forza Motorsport 7.

Super Mario could come to the Xbox One.
Head of Xbox One Phil Spencer has expressed his wishes to see Super Mario appear on Microsoft’s console. He further hinted that Microsoft and Nintendo might be working on making this possible.
“Nintendo has the strongest first-party of anybody,” said Phil Spencer about the Japanese video game maker when asked about the partnership. “They’re just fantastic and the memories that they have instilled in so many of us, who’ve played their games and had those delightful experiences, having those on Xbox would be great,” he further added.
The news has ignited a glimmer of hope among gamers with classic tastes who speculate that Super Mario games will soon be playable on the Xbox One.
The past couple of years have gone particularly well for the Xbox One, given the introduction of backward compatibility and the Play Anywhere feature that allows gamers to jump between games on the Xbox One and Windows PC.
With Microsoft in full swing for the launch of its next console in 2017, the Xbox One Scorpio, there are several hints suggesting that Super Mario will appear on Scorpio given the partnership does come to an agreement.
Back in 2015, Spencer suggested that he would particularly appreciate if Microsoft characters like Banjo Kazooie could show up in Nintendo games such as Super Smash Brothers. The release of Minecraft on Nintendo acted also contributed to this friendly relationship between Microsoft and Nintendo.

Super Mario on Xbox One UPDATE: Microsoft wants partnership with Nintendo.
MICROSOFT gave Nintendo Minecraft, and hopes the Switch maker will one day return the favour.

Microsoft wants to partner with Nintendo in order to bring Super Mario to Xbox One.
Microsoft's Phil Spencer said that Nintendo had the strongest first-party games, and that he'd love to see them on Xbox.
In an interview with AusGamers, Spencer said: "Nintendo has the strongest first-party of anybody.
"They're just fantastic and the memories that they have instilled in so many of us, who've played their games and had those delightful experiences, having those on Xbox would be great."
Perhaps with Microsoft porting Minecraft over to Wii U, Nintendo will one day return the favour.
"Obviously we have Minecraft on Nintendo and when that opportunity came up to work with them on Minecraft, you know, some people might look at it and say ‘why would you even do that?’, but with Nintendo, it’s been a great partnership on Minecraft.
"In fact they put Mario in Minecraft on Wii U with the mash-up skin pack. And continuing to work with them on that and building a stronger relationship. I mean if that paid dividends down the road that lead to something else, that would be fantastic."

Perhaps we'll see a slew of Nintendo games on Microsoft's upcoming Xbox One Scorpio, which is described as the most powerful console ever made.
Xbox One Scorpio price details have been revealed ahead of the 2017 release date.
Microsoft has confirmed that the Xbox One Scorpio will definitely cost more than the Xbox One S, which is currently priced at £250.
Interestingly, on the subject of price, Microsoft recently said that the Scorpio was like a high-end PC worth thousands of dollars.
Without revealing full Xbox One Scorpio specs, Microsoft's Aaron Greenberg described it as the "most powerful console you've ever seen".

Mario Kart PS4 and Xbox One – Can We Expect One?
Super Mario Kart games have always been one of the most lovable and enjoyable games on Nintendo consoles. Due to its popularity among gamers, Super Mario Kart has been able to develop into a series of titles that continue to grow to this day. Unfortunately for many, it doesn’t look like we will be seeing a Mario Kart PS4 release or even a Mario Kart Xbox One release in the near future as all of the current Mario Kart games are exclusive to the various Nintendo consoles with the latest one being released on the Wii U.
There is definitely a demand for Super Mario Kart games on other consoles as players don’t wish to spend $400 to buy a console just to play one game. Owners of the PS4 and Xbox One may have game titles such as Need for Speed, Project Cars, and Driveclub but these games just aren’t as wacky and fun as the Mario Kart games we love to play.
So why exactly doesn’t the PS4 and Xbox One have their own versions of Mario Kart games? We’ve got a few theories as to why.
Other genres shadow over racing games.
With the rise of many popular titles on both PS4 and Xbox One, racing games are not given that much attention compared to other genres like First Person Shooters and Action-Adventures . Though there are some good titles out there such as Need for Speed and Driveclub, it seems like other game genres take the spotlight on the PS4 and Xbox One which further reduced the chance on seeing a Super Mario Kart PS4 type of game.
Games today are serious, dramatic and/or dark.
Popular games today are usually involved in either a dramatic and heartwarming atmosphere, a dark desolate world, or a place where it’s just serious business ( The Witcher 3 , Fallout 4 , GTA5 , etc). Although some games do have their own way of comedy such as Drake’s witty comments in Uncharted , many of the most anticipated games of 2016 usually have a touch of realism to them that it makes throwing in cartoon cliches a little difficult. These storylines might just deliver more bang for the buck, hence, developers focusing efforts here rather than games similar to Mario Kart.
The games did not fare well compared to Mario Kart games.
Compared to their Nintendo rivals, Sony, Microsoft, or any third party developers have yet to develop a title which can become as popular as Mario Kart games. Although there was a title available for both PS3 and Xbox 360 called Sonic All-Stars Racing Transformed that came close to Mario Kart’s feel but didn’t quite catch the players attention. In the past, the PS1 had Crash Team Racing with also gave a similar feeling but we can only keep our fingers crossed that we can see a Crash Team Racing PS4 remake in the future.
They’re still working on it, possibly…
Since there are numerous titles on the way to both the PS4 and Xbox One, it might be possible that a contender against Mario Kart 8 is in development. Back when the PS3 was the latest console, Sony had already attempted an emulation of Nintendo’s Smash Bros when they created PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale. PlayStation All-Stars could also be created as a racing game as there are a bunch of characters we all know and love that could provide us with hours and hours of fun. Unfortunately, a Mario Kart PS4 or Mario Kart Xbox One release is unlikely but let’s hope that titles like Crash Team Racing and PlayStation All-Stars make a comeback and provide us with some whacky and fun racing.

Forget about that smartphone game — "Super Mario Odyssey" is a massive, insanely-good, open-world Mario game. And it's only available on Nintendo's Switch.
Though thereВ are plenty of gamesВ on all three major game consoles this holiday, a few blockbustersВ are exclusive to each. Starting with "Super Mario Odyssey," we've put togetherВ the three heavy-hitter "exclusive" games for Sony's PlayStation 4, Microsoft's Xbox One, and Nintendo's Switch console this holiday season.

1. "Super Mario Odyssey" on the Nintendo Switch.
Just as "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild" was a massive evolution of the long-running, celebrated "Legend of Zelda" franchise, "Super Mario Odyssey" challenges and evolve the "Super Mario" formula.
"Super Mario Odyssey" is an open-world, nonlinear game starring Mario. That means you're not running from a beginning point to, say, a flagpole. We're talking big open worlds that are packed with details: secret areas to find, puzzles to solve, and — bizarrely — even some old-school 2D Mario thrown in for good measure. Seriously!
This is an area you enter, and play, in "Super Mario Odyssey":
Instead of reaching an endpoint, your goal in "Super Mario Odyssey" is to collect moons, of which there are many in each world. The closest comparison is to "Super Mario 64." It may be too early to call it, and there are a dozen other incredible games this year, but "Super Mario Odyssey" — to me — is the game to get this holiday season.

2. "PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds" on the Xbox One/Xbox One X.
"PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds" boasts a bizarre name and a brilliant concept: 100 people on a massive island, armed with their wits and a scattered arsenal, fighting to the death. Whoever survives at the end of the match wins — and there can only be one.
Each match of "Battlegrounds" starts the same way: You're in a derelict airplane with 100 other actual people; as you fly over a deserted island you're able to choose where you'll parachute down. Since you're unarmed, if you land near anyone it's up to you to choose whether to run (an attempt to arm yourself and/or escape) or to fight (with your fists!) to death. As the match progresses, the area of the island you're able to occupy shrinks — thus forcing you closer and closer to your opponents.
It sounds intense because it isВ intense . There is no single-player, no "campaign" mode. Just the terrifying island and 100 actual people.
OF NOTE: This game is an "exclusive" insofar as it's only coming to the Xbox One this holiday season. The game is already available, albeit unfinished, on the PC; it will also head to the PlayStation 4 further down the line, though it's not clear when.

3. "Gran Turismo Sport" on the PlayStation 4/PlayStation 4 Pro.
If you like racing, you're probably already thinking pretty seriously about this year's entry in the long-running "Gran Turismo" series. The franchise is known for its microbial level of detail lavished on the world of cars, racing, and gear differentials — "Sport" is no different in this respect, but it's planned as the first in a "new generation" of "Gran Turismo" games.
Notably, there's an "arcade" mode that allows players to have a bit more video-game-esque fun instead of focusing solely on the simulation side of the game — a nod, no doubt, to the competition from Microsoft's "Forza Motorsport" and "Forza Horizon" franchises.
As usual, the newest "Gran Turismo" is a graphics powerhouse:В "Gran Turismo Sport" may be the best-looking game released this year, and it'll look even better if you have a PlayStation 4 Pro and a 4K TV. It's available now.

BONUS: Huge new downloadable content for "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild" — "The Champions' Ballad" — only on the Nintendo Switch.
After the outrageously successful launch of "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild" earlier this year, Nintendo's looking to strike gold once again with its $20 "Season Pass." If you purchased the pass, you've already got access to the first content — the "Master Trials" DLC — and you'll get access to the second, more story-focused content later this year.
In it, you'll play as Link once again, following up the conclusionВ to "Breath of the Wild." Little is known about "The Champions' Ballad" expansion, but it looks as if a variety of characters from the original game's story will return. Nintendo says it will add "a new dungeon, an original story, and even more new challenges" when it arrives.
BONUS: Huge new downloadable content for "Horizon Zero Dawn" — "The Frozen Wilds" — only available on the PlayStation 4.
If you haven't already played the incredible "Horizon Zero Dawn," you're in luck: It's one of the best games of 2017 (some might even call it the best game of 2017 so far). In "Horizon Zero Dawn," you play as Aloy — a brilliant and tough lady out to discover as much as she can about her own origins, amid a bizarro future Earth that is ruled by mechanical animals (including massive dinosaur-like machines).
In the game's first expansion, available now, a new areaВ was added to the already very large map. In this new area, there are new mysteries to uncover, new tribes to interact with, and plenty of angry machines to contend with. Here's the synopsis: Like with the expansion toВ "Breath of the Wild," the expansion to "Horizon Zero Dawn" is a direct continuation of the game's conclusion. Rather than exploring the world from the main game, a whole new area is being added that's set (at least partially) in Yellowstone National Park.В.
