Triple the cost & more features but workmanship worse.
Xbox Elite controller owner since day one release. First controller failed just after 3 months. Left bumper plastic clip broke leaving the bumper free to swing like a door. Upper right paddle button stopped working. After a spending several hours on the phone with MS Support they finally swapped the controller even though it had past its 90 day warranty. That's right the same warranty they provide for a $20 headset is the same warranty for a $150 Wireless controller. (Unless you bought the console controller bundle then you get the full year.) The replacement controller failed after 4 months with right stick drifting issues and the left bumper clip breaking again. Purchased 3rd controller from local store with 2 yr extended warranty. This one is now being replaced due to right stick drifting issues, bumper failure and paddle buttons not clicking. I would like to write about what I like about the controller but MS only gives me 1000 characters, I'm out of room. GET THE EXTENDED WARRANTY.

Wears out fast.
The RB button broke within 6 months, left thumbstick will act up and move your aim in shooting games when not touching it after about 6 months, the rubber handgrips are also falling off. If it had a year long warrenty it'd be way better. HUUUGE waste of money in the long run, SAD.

Busted bumper.
Controller feels solidly made. Fit and finish seem acceptable. But, within 30 days the right bumper broke, as has been extensively documented in these reviews and those elsewhere. In my case, the failure was within the 90 day warranty period. As stated elsewhere, this warranty is criminally short for a product of this expense. Purchase at your own risk.

I have had my elete controler for less than 1 year. I love everything about the controller (when it is working!) I knew I had a problem when the controller wouldn't stay synced to my Xbox unless I had the micro usb cable plugged into it, essentially making it a wired controler. I have watched countless YouTube videos on how to fix the issue. New batteries, power cycled my Xbox, updated controler. You name it is tried it. Microsoft suggested I purchase a new controler. My original controler that came with my Xbox still works perfectly! I spent 150$ on this beast. I'd say worth every penny if it worked. I don't make a ton of money and I'm just disappointed that my elete controler didn't even last one year when the original I have had twice as long still works just fine. I'm more dissatisfied with the customer service I received from Microsoft. I buy Microsoft products because I feel they are the best, but Microsoft makes it hard to be a loyal customer with poor customer service. Great controler (when it works) buy at your own risk. Once you purchase this controler if it malfunctions your stuck with an expencive paper weight.

Works great till it breaks.
I agree with a lot of the reviews here. This controller is great in every aspect of gaming. Everything feels fresh and tactile. The weight was also a big thing that made this controller great for me. Unfortunately like others I only got to use my controller for about 6 months until the Left Bumper just fell off. I take great care of things and would never do something like throw them. So when this happened I was extremely disappointed. If you're looking for a great 6 month controller, this is it. (Model 1698 if anyone was wondering).

DO NOT WATSE YOUR MONEY.
I have gone through two of these controllers. On my first one, the thumb sticks broke and for the second one the back rubber gripping fell off and the same thumbstick issue. I really don't see how they value this controller at 150 dollars. When issues come up on the controller Microsoft policy on a premium controller is absolutely crap. If you want one buy it but pray that you will not have any issues.

Back grips is coming off.right bumper broke.Must games i have tried to use the hair trigger switch thing.Doesnt work to fire the guns in the game .I wouldnt tell anyone to buy a elite controller.They better off just mailing microsoft the cash and keep using a normal controller.

Piece of trash.
Keep loosing the buttons beacause they are on there with magnetics so whenever you flick up or anything like that the button flys of the taller buttons are impossible to use and the peddles on the back are way to sensitive wish I could rate a 0 star.

How to connect an Xbox One Wireless Controller to a Windows PC.
Many PC games let you play with an Xbox Wireless Controller instead of a keyboard or mouse. You can connect your controller to a Windows PC by using a USB cable, the Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows, or over Bluetooth. Some PCs also come with Xbox Wireless built in, so you can connect a controller directly without an adapter.
Windows 10 PC.
Plug a USB charging cable into the front of the controller and plug the other end into your PC.
With USB connections, you can connect 8 Xbox Wireless Controllers at the same time, or 4 controllers that have Xbox Chat Headsets attached. If the controllers have Xbox Stereo Headsets, only 2 can be connected at the same time.
Option 2: Xbox Wireless (Built-in or with Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows)
Choose Add Bluetooth or other device .
Select Everything else .
Select Xbox Wireless Controller .
Click Done .
With Xbox Wireless connections, you can connect 8 Xbox Wireless Controllers at the same time, or 4 controllers that have Xbox Chat Headsets attached. If the controllers have Xbox Stereo Headsets, only 2 can be connected at the same time.
To ensure you have the latest firmware for your controller and headset, see Update your Xbox One Controller.
For more information, see Set up the Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows. This adapter comes either by itself, or in a bundle with an Xbox Wireless Controller.
The Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows may not be available in all markets. When Airplane mode is on, the Xbox Accessories Radio is turned off by default. You will need to turn it back on if you want to use this function while in Airplane mode.
Xbox One Wireless Controllers may support connecting to your PC via Bluetooth. Your controller has this feature if it looks like the one on bottom in this illustration:
On Bluetooth-supported controllers, the plastic around the Xbox button is part of the face of the controller. On controllers without Bluetooth, the plastic around the Xbox button is part of the top, where the bumpers are.
Bluetooth requires a PC running the Windows 10 Anniversary Update. See Windows Update: FAQ to learn how to get the latest Windows update. For best performance, update your controller. See How to update your Xbox One Controller on Windows 10. Bluetooth is supported on PCs, tablets, and laptops. It is not supported on mobile devices. Bluetooth does not support any attachments, such as headsets, chatpads, or the Xbox Stereo Adapter. We recommend connecting only one controller at a time using Bluetooth.
Follow these steps to pair your controller to your PC using Bluetooth:
Make sure you have updated your PC to the Windows 10 Anniversary Update. See Windows Update: FAQ to learn how to get the latest Windows update. For best performance, update your controller. See How to update your Xbox One Controller on Windows 10. Turn on your Xbox Wireless Controller by pressing the Xbox button . Press the controller bind button for three seconds and release.
On your PC, select Start, then Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices . Turn on Bluetooth so your PC can discover Bluetooth devices.
Select Xbox Wireless Controller > Pair .
Windows 8.1 and Windows 7.
When you connect an Xbox Wireless Controller to your Windows 8.1 or Windows 7 PC with a micro-USB cable, Windows will automatically download and install the drivers for the controller. If Windows is not set to automatically download device software, you can check for updates through Device Manager.
Update drivers through Device Manager.
Here’s how to check for updates manually in the Device Manager:
Point to the lower-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer up, and then select Search . Enter Device Manager in the search box, and then select Device Manager .
Note Windows may ask you for an administrator password or to confirm your choice. Locate and expand Microsoft Xbox One Controller . Right-click the expanded Microsoft Xbox One Controller and select Update Driver Software . Select Search Automatically for Updated Software .
With Xbox Wireless or USB connections, you can connect 4 Xbox Wireless Controllers at the same time. You won’t get audio through the controller so there’s no need to connect a headset. Bluetooth connections are not supported.
If the controller doesn't respond, try a different micro-USB cable. To use your Xbox Wireless Controller with your console after using it with a PC, you must re-sync the controller to the console. You can do this by using the wireless sync button or a USB cable. For details, see Connect a wireless Xbox One controller to your console. This information applies only to Xbox One Wireless Controllers. For help with other gamepads or joysticks or for information on configuring a specific game so that you can play it with a controller, refer to the manufacturer’s website.
How to update your Xbox One Controller on Windows 10.
When you update your Xbox controller, you get the latest controller improvements. You can update your controller wirelessly or via USB.
On Windows 10, update your controller by using the Xbox Accessories app:
Get the app from Microsoft Windows 10 by searching for "Xbox Accessories." Launch the Xbox Accessories app. Connect your Xbox One Wireless Controller by using a USB cable or the Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows.
Note You'll be prompted to update to Windows 10 Anniversary Edition if you haven't yet done so.
Note You can also go to Device Info to check for updates.
The Xbox Accessories app is available only on Windows 10. Controllers that don't have a built-in 3.5-mm audio port must be updated using a USB connection and must have the Windows 10 TH2 Update (or later). Updating the controller over Bluetooth is not supported. Bluetooth requires PCs running the Windows 10 Anniversary Update. See Windows Update: FAQ to learn how to get the latest Windows update.
Microsoft Reveals Glow-in-the-Dark Sea of Thieves Xbox One Controller.
Microsoft has announced a tie-in accessory for upcoming pirate-themed action-adventure game Sea of Thieves, with a deep purple, glow-in-the-dark Xbox One controller, available as of next month.
Featuring a "translucent design" and "laser-etched barnacles", the controller also has its own hidden treasure in the form of one single golden trigger (it's the right trigger, if you're wondering) as well as a nautical design on the rear of the controller. The front face of the controller has as its centrepiece a glow-in-the-dark skull wearing an eyepatch, and continuing with the nautical theme, the left control stick has the appearance of a compass.
The piratical controller is launching February 15, which gives you plenty of time to break it in before Sea of Thieves launches for PC and Xbox One March 20.

Don't buy Microsoft's $150 Xbox One controller just yet.
Microsoft unveiled a new Xbox One controller at E3 this week, called the "Xbox Elite Wireless Controller."
The controller itself is extremely useful and customizable, but there's a major catch: It costs $150.В That's more than double the price of a normal Xbox One controller ($60), which is already expensive as is.
Here's the extra features you're getting from the "Elite" controller:
A rubberized diamond grip. You will never drop this thing. A redesigned directional pad (D-pad) for better precision, which can also be removed and replaced with the traditional D-pad design A 3.5mm audio jack so you can plug in your headset, so others around you don't have to listen to your game as you play it Four new paddles on the bottom, which replicate the four face buttons so you don't have to move your hands to perform split-second actions Redesigned analog sticks that are less resistant to wear. They can also be replaced with convex analog sticks (similar to the design on the PlayStation 4's controllers) The ability to map any button or trigger to any part of the controller, and even adjust the sensitivities of those components.
Even the most hardcore gamers will find few complaints with this controller, since everything can be customized to your liking, and it's generally friendlier towards all types of games and gamers. And since you can pre-configure settings and switch between those different load-outs for different games using those tiny green buttons on the back of the controller, it's easy to change your controller layout on the fly.
The major downside, obviously, is the price. Keep in mind, the actual Xbox One console is $350, so if you plan to buy two Elite controllers, that's another $300 right there.
If you want a complete set — 4 Elite controllers, for all of those multiplayer games like "Halo" — that's going to cost you a whopping $600.
Mind you, these are premium controllers that you'll likely not need to replace anytime soon. But the price of the Xbox Elite Wireless Controllers adds to the total price of the Xbox One: If you don't have the console yet, buying an Xbox One and just a single Elite controller will put you back $500. And that doesn't even include the price of games, which cost upwards of $60 apiece, or the other accessories you might want to buy, like a quality headset.
There's not much wrong with the current $60 Xbox One controller — I asked my Xbox One-owning colleagues, who all say the controller hasn't broken or deformed since purchase — but it 's great that Microsoft wanted to build a better one. That said, $150 is exorbitant for a few improvements that arguably should be standard. So wait until the eventual price drop, either during a flash sale or during the holiday season, when everything is cheaper. Keep in mind, the original Xbox One system cost $500 (with the Kinect peripheral included), but Microsoft quickly lowered the price to better compete with Sony's PlayStation 4. In time, the same thing will happen to this Elite controller.

Microsoft Xbox One S.
The good The Xbox One S is a slick looking game console that's 40 percent smaller than the original and ditches the infamously gigantic power brick. It can display 4K video from streaming services and Ultra HD Blu-rays, and supports HDR contrast on video and games. The updated controller works with other Bluetooth devices, too.
The bad 4K, Ultra HD Blu-ray and HDR settings only work with newer TVs, and may require some trial and error. The updated controller feels cheaper than its predecessor. Project Scorpio, the more powerful Xbox One successor, arrives in late 2017.
The bottom line The Xbox One S is the console Microsoft should have delivered three years ago, but there's little reason to upgrade if you already own the original box.

Update 8/4/16: Several spec teardown reports have uncovered slight difference in the graphical hardware performance of Xbox One S. Specifically, Xbox One S has a small GPU clock increase of 914 MHz from 853 MHz and an ESRAM bandwidth increase of 219 GB/s from 204 GB/s. These bumps are only noticeable in-game in a small number of situations. In fact, they exist only as an bonus side effect of Microsoft ensuring HDR content performs without a hitch.
This is more like it.
The Xbox One S is the version of the console that Microsoft should've first released back in 2013 instead of the lumbering beast that we got. It's better in a number of ways, making it even more of a worthy alternative to Sony's PlayStation 4.
Xbox One S offers a far more attractive enclosure, options for a bigger hard drive, a slightly redesigned controller and some video perks for owners of 4K TVs. It starts at $300, £250 or AU$400 for the 500GB version; $350, £300 or AU$500 for a 1TB model; and $400, £350 or AU$549 for 2TB.
That last model is available to buy as of today in the US (and includes the vertical stand that otherwise costs $20 when purchased separately in the US), while those with the smaller hard drives will be available later in August, bundled with games such as Madden 17 and Halo. (Additional bundles will follow later in the year -- including a pricier 2TB Gears of War 4 version in October -- and may vary by region.)
Sounds like a slam dunk, right? Unfortunately, it's never that simple. The One S doesn't get an across-the-board "buy it now" recommendation for two reasons. First off, it doesn't deliver huge improvements for anyone who already owns an Xbox One. But more importantly, Microsoft has already promised that the next Xbox -- dubbed Project Scorpio -- will be arriving in late 2017 with with the seriously amped-up graphics and VR-ready hardware that audiences are clamoring for.
When it's all said and done, the Xbox One S should be primarily viewed as a slimmed-down version of the Xbox One that introduces a mildly updated controller and provisions for 4K display. It's not going to warp you into a state-of-the-art gaming experience. Pragmatically, you're probably better off nabbing an older Xbox One, which are now being sold at fire-sale prices. But if you are getting an Xbox One for the first time, have an interest in the bundled games and aren't saving your pennies for 2017's Project Scorpio, the One S is certainly a good all-round gaming and entertainment deal.
What's new in the Xbox One S.
There's a short but significant list of improvements and changes to the Xbox One S.
Smaller, cleaner design: To start, it's 40 percent smaller, which considering its power supply is now internal, is impressive. It's also stark white, with some slick plastic moldings flanking the entirety of the box. I think it's the best-looking Xbox Microsoft has ever designed.
The One S can also stand vertically, too. The 2TB model we received for review packs in a stand. If you buy one of the other models, you can get the stand separately for $20.
4K and HDR video: Xbox One S gets a fairly beefy upgrade on its video capabilities, with 4K resolution (3,840x2,160, or four times as sharp as standard 1080p HDTVs) and HDR (high dynamic range, which is basically enhanced contrast and color). Keep in mind: those features only work on compatible TVs and 4K functionality only works with a small but growing list of compatible video content. 4K can currently be accessed through streaming video services such as Amazon and Netflix (as long as you have the bandwidth to support it and pay for their premium tier) and those new 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs. Certain games, meanwhile, will eventually be able to take advantage of HDR visual improvements, but don't look for PC-like 4K graphics -- the games are merely upscaled to 4K.
So no, you're not getting native 4K gaming out of an Xbox One S. In fact, only a limited number of games will feature HDR and none of them are out yet. They are Gears of War 4, Forza Horizon 3 and 2017's Scalebound.
New controller design: The Xbox One controller has been updated for the S, too. It has a more streamlined top section, better range and textured grips. It can also use Bluetooth to connect, which opens the door for compatibility with other devices -- no more annoying dongles, at least on Bluetooth-compatible PCs.

Unfortunately, I'm not a fan of the new controller's design. It's not a drastic departure from the original, but there's just enough of a change to make it feel cheaper. The plastic textured grips don't feel good the way rubberized ones do, but thankfully the triggers seem unchanged. The D-pad also feels slightly less tactile -- I even noticed differences between two of the new controllers side by side.
IR blaster and receiver: Still present is the IR port for controlling the console with a remote, but the Xbox One S also features an integrated IR blaster to control or power on other devices in the room.
And it still does everything the old Xbox One does: The good news is that you're not losing anything with the Xbox One S compared with its predecessor. Around back the console offers a lot of the same ports as the original Xbox One, though noticeably absent is a dedicated Kinect port. You can still attach Kinect to the Xbox One S, you'll just need a special $40 (!) adapter. Either way, the omission of a Kinect port should give you an idea of how that peripheral is regarded at Microsoft HQ.
HDMI-in and -out ports are still there, so you can still make use of the Xbox One's live TV integration if that's something that appeals to you, but I never found it overly useful.
Suffice it to say, the One S plays all existing Xbox One games, and a growing list of Xbox 360 games. It also includes all of the encouraging software improvements Microsoft has made over the past few years, including the redesigned interface, support for the Cortana digital assistant (using a microphone headset), compatibility with the Windows Store and, soon, additional cross-play options with Windows PC gamers on certain titles.
4K and HDR scorecard.
I want to personally thank the Xbox One S for introducing me to the hot mess that is the world of 4K and HDR formats. I considered myself fairly fluent in the language of home theater, but I was bewildered at the insane of amount of granularity and confusion that the format is currently plagued with.
Odds are you won't be able set up in 4K right out of the box. I needed to download two separate updates for the Xbox One S to finally realize it was attached to a 4K TV, at which point it offered to bump up the resolution output to 4K.
I hooked the console up to four different TVs and had mixed results with each, so I tapped CNET's David Katzmaier to help me test out the rest of the Xbox One S' 4K and HDR capabilities.
What we learned is that getting all of these finicky display technologies to work together in sync will require some trial and error -- and patience.
Our major issue was getting our TVs to recognize HDR. The problem (which isn't solely the Xbox One S' fault) is that some TVs with HDR require a specific "UHD" or "deep color" setting to be turned on in order for HDR to work. These modes usually turn a TV's brightness all the way up and activate automatically when HDR content is detected. But none of our TVs detected the Ultra HD Blu-ray HDR signal that was being output by our "Star Trek" Blu-ray.
It wasn't until we forced the Xbox One S to output a higher bit depth (10-bit up from the console's default setting of 8-bit) did we get a clean HDR signal. Furthermore, we had issues maintaining a video signal altogether when our TV was in that special "UHD/deep color" setting for HDR but the Xbox One S was outputting a signal lower than 10-bit.
Sound confusing? That's because it was. And this was with the help of one of the best TV reviewers on the planet. It's possible your setup goes smoother, but there are definitely a lot of variables and boxes to check when entering the world of 4K, Ultra HD and HDR to make sure it all works correctly.
There's a really helpful 4K detail screen in the system display settings that gives you a heads up of which requirements for 4K, HDR and so on are currently being met. Definitely check that out.
Tragically, all of this time-consuming troubleshooting to get HDR to switch on isn't always worth it. In fact, it's sometimes nearly impossible to tell just by looking at the image onscreen. We tried. The takeaway? 4K and HDR are nice novelties, but I'm not sure even the most discerning eyes can always tell the difference. And because only a fraction of games will even support HDR (the aforementioned trio of Gears of War 4, Forza Horizon 3 and Scalebound), it makes upgrading a tough sell. Not to mention the fact that all the games you'll ever play on Xbox One S won't be in true native 4K resolution -- they'll just be upscaled to fit.
That said, there are plenty of 4K Blu-rays out there, and Netflix can stream some content in 4K (as long as you pay for its Premium tier). If you are in the specific position of owning a 4K TV and are looking for an Xbox One, the S is what you should be buying.
It's worth noting that the Xbox One S doesn't handle the higher-end audio options out there such as Dolby Atmos. The most you'll get out of the console is a seven-channel surround signal.
Looking forward to Project Scorpio.
Microsoft's messaging about its console offerings can get confusing. It's best to think of the Xbox One and One S as their own tier. In terms of graphical horsepower, they're equal. The next jump in visuals and performance will come along with Project Scorpio, which is being targeted for the 2017 holiday season.
Details on that machine are scant at best, but it's safe to say it will significantly outperform the Xbox One and One S, the PlayStation 4 and -- if we're going on rumored specs -- the PlayStation 4 step-up console, the PS4 Neo.
This will usher in a sizable upgrade in all aspects of gaming with native 4K resolution output and HDR support. And Microsoft has already pledged that Scorpio will be "VR ready," presumably for a forthcoming virtual-reality headset.
The current messaging as to how games will work across Xbox One platforms seems simple enough. Any Xbox One (be it a standard, S or Project Scorpio) will be able to play any Xbox One game, though the Scorpio will be able to take advantage of better graphics, performance, frame rate and resolution. This seems to mostly fall in line with the PS4 Neo plan as well.
If we're just comparing raw specs, Project Scorpio's rumored details still fall short of what an Nvidia GTX 1080 graphics card is capable of.
Decisions, decisions.
Under most circumstances, no, you don't need to buy an Xbox One S. If you already own an Xbox One or even plan to wait for whatever Project Scorpio winds up being, it's tough to rationalize a purchase.
If you're looking to enter the Xbox One space and you don't feel like waiting a year or more for Project Scorpio, an Xbox One S might be the right purchase for you as long as you have or plan to get a 4K TV.
If a 4K TV isn't in your future, you may want to look at the original Xbox One. It's already as low as $250, £250 or AU$500 and it's entirely possible Microsoft will drive the price even lower if it's looking to sunset the model and clear out remaining inventory.
