It is cool that us Xbox One, PS4, and Steam fans can now play it, as well as putting it on the Switch. And the game has been updated with so much new content, including co-op (not in the original), new vehicles, new characters, and so much more. Never been a fan of the Lego games and decided to give this a try. It’s ok. LEGO City Undercover Review. When we first reviewed LEGO City Undercover for Wii U in March 2013, we declared it great and awarded it an 8.0 out of 10. Here’s what we said then: LEGO City Undercover is the best iteration of a very familiar experience, which is as reassuring or problematic as that might seem. The sheer scope of the overworld is impressive, as is the way Traveller’s Tales layered in its wide range of collectible goodies, which ensures hours upon hours of activity after the campaign ends, which should take the average player about 10 hours, accounting for some collectible fetching. Undercover’s story is an incredibly entertaining homage to countless movies and television shows, and manages to feature a very strong cast of characters – no small feat considering the game has no major license associated with it. Of course, rampant loading times, no co-op and a variety of other problems (loading times, routine gameplay) hold Undercover back from truly taking the next step for the larger LEGO franchise. That’s still for the most point where we stand on it today, with the main difference being the inclusion of local two-player co-operative play for the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch and PC versions of the game. This brings the updated release of LEGO City Undercover more in line with the vast majority of LEGO titles from Traveler’s Tales, as a second player can now drop in and drop out at any point. Admittedly co-op support in LEGO City Undercover is pretty barebones. Rather than introduce a second character into the game’s story, player two is just a palette-swapped version of main hero Chase McCain. Furthermore there are no specific missions, puzzles, or activities designed to cater to co-operative play, it’s the exact same content as the Wii U version only it can be tackled with two of you brick-smashing your way to success instead of one. Having said that, it’s still a fun sandbox to muck around in with a second player particularly given the presence of some 100 different vehicles to thrash about, and certainly the addition of co-op helps to make this re-release of LEGO City Undercover superior to the original to some degree. The only other major difference is the migration of the Wii U’s second screen features onto a single screen. LEGO City Undercover hardly made the most of the Wii U Gamepad anyway, so these tweaks have a fairly minor impact on the experience as a whole. It’s certainly more convenient to have video communications windowed in the corner of the main screen rather than having to keep looking down in your lap while you’re driving somewhere, and although controlling the environment scanner with thumbsticks isn’t quite as fun as physically holding up the Gamepad was, it’s no less functional. (It does however seem slightly odd that Chase McCain’s slab-like police communicator device still looks exactly like the Wii U Gamepad it was originally designed to imitate.) Each version of the re-released LEGO City Undercover runs at 1080p (including the Switch version, when docked) and at a more stable frame rate compared to the original (with the exception of the un-docked Switch version, which features a slightly choppier frame rate reminiscent of the Wii U original). The visuals are otherwise unchanged, but I wasn’t exactly expecting the addition of high resolution textures or anything since well, almost everything in the game is made out of smooth-surfaced LEGO bricks. What I had hoped for was some level of optimisation for the load times, but unfortunately this doesn’t appear to be an area that developer TT Fusion has given much love. While it varies marginally between platforms, LEGO City Undercover still features generally sluggish load times. Even the Switch version, which I downloaded digitally and have running off a high speed Micro SD card, can still take anywhere from 30 seconds to a full minute when transitioning from an interior to the open world, which is a lengthy period of time to regularly stare at a static screen no matter how much you enjoy the incredibly funky ‘70s wah-wah wocka-ing that accompanies it. If you’ve already played the original LEGO City Undercover on Wii U, then there is little reason to pick up this re-release. However, if you were one of the many who missed it the first time around then LEGO City Undercover remains a hilarious riff on police procedurals, built upon a GTA-for-juniors open world blueprint, and stuffed with enjoyable side missions and collectibles to hunt down. The addition of split-screen play, cursory in its execution as it may be, only makes the game more appealing to players who would prefer to experience LEGO City Undercover with a friend riding shotgun. And what's a good police story without a partner in crime-fighting? LEGO City Undercover remains a colourful open world stuffed with gameplay, and now it can be enjoyed by two. © 1996-2018 Ziff Davis, LLC. LEGO City Undercover is an open world grand theft auto True Crime styled Lego game where you play as Lego City Undercover. LEGO City Undercover is an open world grand theft auto True Crime styled Lego game where you play as Chase McCain going after an escaped prisoner Rex Fury. Before I start this review, It’s important to note that I don’t like Lego games. I’m probably gonna complain about things you love. But LEGO City Undercover is easily my favorite one to date. The charm and humor here is the best I’ve seen in a Lego game, which is surprising considering it features a unique cast of characters.. A few parodies thrown in there… But there wasn’t 1 character I met throughout the journey that didn’t make me smile in one way or another… I was in love with the first half of this 12 hour campaign… You’re driving around the Lego city to each destination, stopping along your way to collect new costumes, or cars from doing time trials if you’d like… destroying and rebuilding during the campaign to complete tasks and find keys… And slowly you’re introduced to different undercover identities… This is where the games potential starts to shine, but it’s also where the game starts to fall apart… There are 15 chapters in total here and the missions in these chapters are mixed between in city with car chases and climbing buildings and then there’s the sections of the game that are inside of buildings… And this is where the game comes to a crawl.. Especially later on in the world. For starters. this is where you have to deal with the slow and boring combat system of reversing, mashing the o button and throwing handcuffs on enemies.. It’s a little fun for a while, but gets old pretty fast… At first I don’t mind these more puzzle platformer sections of the game. They’re a break from the fairly small Lego world. This stops that world from getting boring… And it extends playtime as you’re switching through the different identities to throw different switches and break different items… I’d get to some annoying spots where the game forces you to go collect a ridiculous amount of blocks to complete a super build, which isn’t too bad since there are special blocks usually pretty close and you can use your communicator to see them in the world so you have an idea of where to go.. But by time you unlock the color gun. .all of it becomes just so overwhelming… The game doesn’t reserve 2 different characters for these levels. which would’ve been much better. Instead they want to throw them all in. making you constantly switch through characters to make little progress only to have to switch back to another and another and another. The fire fighter and the color gun just became obnoxious… The fire extinguisher hardly works and the paint sections are just time wasters… Where sometimes it isn’t even about changing the color of a switch,, its painting a wall so you can climb it… The pacing just becomes awful in the final stretches and it ruins the charm and feel of the game completely… The puzzly grind is sort of what Lego games are about.. so Lego fans rejoice… But in general, while this game genuinely surprised me during the first 7 chapters and had me smiling nonstop, I felt it just started wasting my time towards the end just because… Don’t let the final bits scare you away though.. LEGO City Undercover is a great game full of laughs and fun even if like me, you hate Lego games. Lego City Undercover Coming to Nintendo Switch, PS4, Xbox One, PC. Still undercover. Lego City Undercover will be re-released on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PC, and Xbox One, developer Lego has announced. The game originally launched as a Wii U exclusive in March 2013. The announcement was made on Twitter, where Lego said it will be available in "Spring 2017." LEGO CITY Undercover is looking for new recruits on PlayStation®4, Xbox One® and Nintendo Switch™ in Spring 2017. pic.twitter.com/wiFcW0cNcp. Responding to questions, Lego described the game as both a "re-release" and a "remastered" version for new platforms. It remains unclear whether this is a straight port or if improvements and content additions will be included. "More information will be coming over the next couple of months..stay tuned," the company added. Unlike many other Lego video games, Lego City Undercover is based on an original story where players take control of an undercover police officer named Chase McCain to bring criminals to justice. "By the time Lego City Undercover's story comes to an end, you have guided Chase through every action-movie circumstance imaginable, and have probably seen the 'twists' coming a mile away. And that's perfectly OK," said Kevin VanOrd in GameSpot's Lego City Undercover review. "The game knows you know where it's going, and it has fun at its own expense . There are bigger, more complex, more beautiful open-world games on the market. But none of them are this good at making you feel so young at heart." LEGO City Undercover - Xbox One.
