Back when the ARK: Survival Evolved Dev Kit launched in August, I don’t think anyone could have anticipated the amount of participation we would see or the sheer creativity that would be displayed in mods. Yet, here we are two mod contests later, looking at a phenomenal display of talent. From mods that allow you to survive in outer space, to NPC characters that live in the wild, to huge new maps that put an alternate twist on ARK ’s environments, there is no shortage of imagination and ingenuity. When I first opened the development kit and began creating Primitive+, I only had one goal in mind: Provide people with a more immersive experience by expanding upon the primitive nature of the game. Little did I know it would present an opportunity of a lifetime – to have my work seen and played by millions of people. A lot of my childhood dreams were realized simply by opening up the development kit. Like me, there are others who have these dreams of seeing their work on a large platform. I am happy to announce Ben Burkart’s excellent “The Center” map will be the next to realize this dream. “The Center” is a fantasy themed map that literally doubles the size of the game. It includes a ton of new stuff including biomes, dungeons, ancient ruins and floating islands. In May, it will become an official alternate map for ARK: Survival Evolved on Xbox One and PC! Later in the year we will also be bringing Primitive+ to the Xbox as our first official mod on the console. This allows for the potential of other mod authors to realize the same feeling of fulfillment I had when I saw Primitive+ go from a concept in my head to something that will reach every Xbox One player. All of us at Wildcard are so excited to bring excellent community creations to Xbox One players, giving them tons more content than we ever anticipated. Visit us at www.survivetheark.com to join in the fun, and if you’ve ever been curious or interested in modding, now would be a great time to grab the ARK Dev Kit and start learning. We’re looking forward to hopping in the game with you, having fun exploring the new content, and hearing your feedback! ARK: Survival Evolved. EditWalkthrough Sections. EditJust Starting Out. Welcome to Ark! You wake up on a strange island with nothing but your underwear and an implant in your arm. Wild dinosaurs roam freely and you must learn to live and survive among them. First thing you need to do is craft some tools. The first tool you need is a stone pick. This will allow you to easily get more thatch from trees and break rocks up for flint. Since you have nothing but your fists at the moment you will need to find the nearest tree and go all Mike Tyson on it. Yes, you need to punch (Left click by default) the tree, but not too much because punching things hurts your health. Just punch enough trees to get 10 thatch and 1 wood. Next, you need 1 stone which you can find laying on the ground. Easiest way to do this is to spam the action button (E by default) while walking around. Once you get all that access your inventory (I by default) and select the craftables tab (or V by default), click on the stone pick that should be lit up and hit craft.  By now you should have leveled up for the first time which will give you some Engram Points (EP) to unlock more blueprints. The very next thing you'll want is the stone hatchet which is good for getting more wood from trees and stones from rocks. You also have an ability point that you can put towards any of your attributes. Just hit the + next to whichever one you want (Health, Stamina, or Speed are good places to start) and then you will be taken to the blueprints screen. This is where you unlock all the blueprints to craft things in the game. As mentioned before, the first blueprint you want to unlock should be the stone hatchet. You should have enough points to unlock another one which should be either the campfire so you can cook meat or the spear so you can defend yourself. Once you are done with using your EP it's time to gather the rest of the materials needed to make the stone hatchet and a torch, both of which require flint which can be mined with the pick from huge boulders. At this point, if you haven't gotten any food you'll want to start stocking up as you might be getting hungry. Easiest way to do this in the beginning is to forage for berries. Walk up to some bushes and with either your bare hands or the torch hit the interact button. Bushes will give you some berries to eat along with fiber to craft more items later. Be careful about eating too many Narcoberries as they will put you to sleep. Likewise, Stimberries will lower your torpidity (stat that puts you to sleep, you want it at 0) but make you thirsty. Eating berries will help you out in a pinch but the real nutrition comes from cooked meat which fills your Hunger bar faster. Hopefully by now you have leveled up again and unlocked both the campfire and the spear. Each spear will cost you 8 wood, 2 flint, and 12 fiber along with a good chunk of your weight capacity. At most you should have 2-3 spears at any given time in case they break. Once you have a spear crafted you can start killing things with relative ease. Since you are just starting out it's best to stick with attacking Dodos, Dilos, and Coelacanths (fish). After killing an animal you can use either the pick for more meat or hatch for more hide, which is used later. For now, stock up on meat to cook and eat. The next thing you need is a campfire which requires 12 thatch, 1 flint, 16 stones, and 2 wood. You'll also need some extra thatch or wood to light the campfire.  Upon having crafted the campfire place it down and access its inventory by walking up to it and either pressing E when it's out of fuel or holding E and selecting Inventory. Add the wood (preferably) or thatch, drop some raw meat in, and hit Light Fire. After a little bit of time the raw meat will turn into cooked meat. While you can eat raw meat in a pinch it does lower your health so always try to eat cooked meat. You may also be getting thirsty at this point so while your meat is cooking you should fill your thirst meter back up. That is as simple as walking into water deep enough to swim in and submerge your head. Later in the game you will be able to craft items that carry water, but for now it's best to stick close to water sources. A few other things to keep in mind when starting out is the temperature. When it gets really hot a small fire icon shows in the bottom left corner of your screen. This means your thirst meter will drop faster, especially the more active you are. Try to stay near the water to cool off and drink before dehydration sets in. When it gets cold out a small snowflake or ice cube will show up in the same corner. Being cold lowers your hunger faster which means you need to eat more or you will starve. Again, the more active you are the faster it drains. Also, try and stay near heat sources or inside buildings to stay warm. Dilos will spit at you and blind you for several seconds so if you see one about to spit in your general direction try to avoid it. Some creatures will increase your torpor which is represented by a small stars icon above your EXP meter on the right and a purplish border on your screen. If this increases too much you will be knocked unconscious and unable to do anything. Torpor also rises when you attack when out of stamina. Where there is one Raptor, there is 3 more right behind it. Now that you have some basic survival knowledge, it’s time to find a nice quiet area, settle down, and build a base. Maybe even find a tribe mate or two to settle in with. On Screen Basics Previous. Difference between PvP and PvE. © 1996-2018 Ziff Davis, LLC. Last updated by Eddie Makuch on December 9, 2015 at 5:13PM. You are now subscribed. An in-development version of dinosaur game Ark: Survival Evolved will launch on Xbox One on December 16, developer Studio Wildcard has announced. It'll cost $35, which is $5 more than the game goes for on PC. Studio co-founder and creative director Jess Rapczak says in a new interview that the Xbox One version--released though the Xbox Game Preview program--has "no compromises" when compared to the PC edition. It'll feature all of the content released to date fo the PC version--and there's been a lot. In addition, Xbox One players are getting a range of "Founder's content," including skins and more. "Gamers want new experiences on their consoles, and we feel that Ark, which is one of the few dinosaur games on the market, and one of the only, if not the only true multiplayer survival games on console, will bring that fresh gaming experience that helps define this generation," he told IGN. The Xbox One version of Ark won't get new updates on the "insane pace" of the PC version, but Studio Wildcard's plan is to "keep content parity between the Xbox Game Preview and PC versions of the game. " When Ark leaves Xbox Game Preview and launches in full next summer, it will cost more than $35, though a final price point was not announced. Whatever the case, people who bought the Xbox One Preview version will not need to re-buy the game. Ark is also coming to PlayStation 4, though not until next summer. The dinosaur-hunting open-world survival epic ARK: Survival Evolved has gotten off to a fast start. For many of its 2.4 million Early Access customers on PC, it is the dinosaur game they've been wanting their whole lives (see our epic two-hour first-time playthrough below). ARK was also announced for consoles (console and PC final versions are due out in June 2016), but on Xbox One it's getting the Early Access treatment very soon thanks to the Xbox Game Preview program announced at E3 earlier this year. The XGP edition of the game will be available on December 16 for $34.99. We spoke with Jess Rapczak, co-founder and co-creative director at Studio Wildcard, about ARK on Xbox One. "Our goal is to bring all this chaotic and creative spontaneous fun – the tribe building, dino-breeding, dino-combat, the weapons-, armor-, food-, and recipe-crafting, and more – to Xbox One fans with no compromises," he told us when we asked if we should expect any differences from the PC version. "Through all of this, we hope to help Microsoft build out Xbox Game Preview while giving Xbox One gamers something totally new and different than the standard updated version of old franchises. Gamers want new experiences on their consoles, and we feel that ARK, which is one of the few dinosaur games on the market, and one of the only, if not the only true multiplayer survival games on console, will bring that fresh gaming experience that helps define this generation." And what content will the initial XGP version of the game launch with? "Everything that’s in the PC version right now is on Xbox," Rapczak said. "ARK has been in Early Access development for six months, and the amount of content has easily tripled in that time while the game systems have become much more mature. XGP gamers are getting the benefit of all that work with a game that is much closer to launch than the one that hit Steam back in June." Though Rapczak admits the team likely "won't be putting out updates at the insane pace of the PC version," noting the PC edition's 224 iterations since June, he does say that, "we do plan to keep content parity between the XGP and PC versions of the game. That means you can expect to see updates no further than two weeks apart full of new content, features and general improvements across the board. We've gotten a lot of feedback from the PC community that we're doing Early Access better than they've ever seen before, and we want to continue that trend with Xbox Game Preview." Refreshingly, Rapczak also notes that those who purchase the $34.99 Xbox Game Preview version will not have to re-purchase the game – which will carry a higher price tag – when the final release happens in June. They'll just update their build and have the full game at the lower price. "I’m also excited to announce that the Xbox Game Preview version of ARK comes with Limited Edition Xbox-Exclusive Founder's content," Rapczak added, "including an unlockable bionic 'Tek' T-Rex skin, ARK Founder's Hat skin, and ARK Founder's Trophy." Back in May, Jurassic World stomped its way to the top of the box office, having raked in over $1.5 billion at the global box office so far. JW ‘s incredible success no doubt contributed to the success of Ark: Survival Evolved , with Studio Wildcard’s dinosaur survival sim being released on Steam (via Early Access) just a few days later. Ark: Survival Evolved contains all of the usual survival sim gameplay, with players able to hunt for and grow their own food, as well as craft items and use their gathered resources to build shelters. But the real draw of Ark: Survival Evolved is that it includes a variety of dinosaurs, from great, hulking behemoths, to much smaller beasts no bigger than the player character. While Ark: Survival Evolved players can take on these dinosaurs, working with other players in the game to take down the bigger monsters, players can also train and even ride the dinos. They just knock the dinosaur unconscious, nurse it back to health with some grub and then the player can ride it around the game – or even fly it about if they train up a pterodactyl. So with all of that, it’s unsurprising that the game has garnered mostly positive reviews on Steam and why it sold over one million copies in under a month. Studio Wildcard will be looking forward to more positive reviews when Ark: Survival Evolved is also released on Xbox One. During the company’s Gamescom 2015 press conference, Microsoft revealed that the game would be coming to the Xbox One Preview Program in ‘Winter’ (early 2016). And although the Preview Program is invite only (and therefore not all Xbox One players will be able to play the game when it lands on the platform), it does mean that for a few months Ark: Survival Evolved will be an Xbox One console-exclusive as the dinosaur sim is also scheduled for a full release on PS4 in June 2016. However, while Ark: Survival Evolved is a fantastic bargaining chip for Microsoft (between this and EA Access, which provides early access to demos), some have criticized the announcement. Many Steam players argue that their version of the game should be finished first before the developer starts thinking about the Xbox One, PS4 and Project Morpheus versions of the game. DayZ is another Steam Early Access game that had console versions announced – despite the delays of its full Steam version – and its developer drew the ire of the fanbase as a result. Ark: Survival Evolved ‘s developer would surely want to avoid the same thing happening here. Ark: Survival Evolved will be released on Xbox One (via the Preview Program) in winter. The game is currently available on PC, Mac and Linux via Steam Early Access. Blocked IP Address. Your IP address has been temporarily blocked due to a large number of HTTP requests. Studio Wildcard’s ARK: Survival Evolved made a huge splash on Windows PC when it hit Steam Early Access this past June. It’s a hardcore, kill-or-be-killed, persistent-world survival-shooter that challenges you to tame the wild – literally, tame giant dinosaurs – in order to make your way in its harsh, deadly world. And we’re excited to announce that on December 16, ARK is headed to Xbox One’s Game Preview program. Studio Wildcard co-founder Jesse Rapczak is rather excited about ARK ’s journey to Xbox One – and what it means for the game and its fans. “You’d be hard-pressed to find another game anywhere that has a huge and persistent open world, tens of thousands of unique A.I. characters, 70+ players per server, and exciting lore and endgame content – as well as single-player, non-dedicated and dedicated server modes,” said Rapczak. And now it’s coming to the generation’s greatest console platform – with plenty of Xbox-exclusive Founder’s content in tow, including a bionic “Tek” T-Rex skin, ARK Founder’s Hat skin, and ARK Founder’s Trophy. For Rapczak, the Xbox platform presented a huge opportunity to expand ARK ’s player base in a meaningful and unique way. “Xbox Live provides a fair, secure, and robust multiplayer experience that minimizes cheating and reduces the barriers to playing with your friends,” Rapczak told us. “You can also host your own 50+ player ARK server on a second Xbox One – which is something that would normally require an expensive PC server and a lot of management headaches. The gamepad control scheme is also much improved over the PC version. ARK on Xbox One will be the smoothest gameplay experience for the majority of gamers… especially for the price!” And while ARK is the kind of game where you’ll spend your first few hours generally trying not to get eaten, it presents a pretty varied experience, for lots of different player types. As you progress in ARK ’s dinosaur-eat-man world, you’ll (eventually) reach the limits of human biomechanics – and you’ll need to employ some dinosaurs and other creatures to help you advance and keep you safe. Thousands of wild animals (each with unique talents, once tamed) are out there, interacting with each other and creating emergent experiences in the wild. For more pacifist players, farming is an option: You can grow your food with a variety of seeds, crop plots, and irrigation systems, and live a completely vegetarian lifestyle. One of the game’s most interesting features is its persistent world, which (much like the real thing) will keep right on going regardless of how advanced your survivor may or may not be. “When you respawn you can choose to continue advancing your current survivor, or scrap it and start a new one,” says Rapczak. “Either way the world goes on whether you are there or not!” Best of all – you’ll be able to get your hands on it soon. We can’t wait to see more of ARK: Survival Evolved when it hits the Xbox One Game Preview program on December 16.
