Is Anthem's E3 reveal the real deal on Xbox One X?
Digital Foundry's forensic breakdown of BioWare's stunning gameplay demo.
By Thomas Morgan Published 15/06/2017.
As a 'one more thing' closing zinger for the Microsoft E3 2017 media briefing, the reveal of BioWare's Anthem is hard to beat. A highly polished six-minute gameplay demo - or 'vertical slice' - the code is said to be running on Xbox One X hardware and it looks simply incredible. But from The Witcher 3 to Watch Dogs 2 and Destiny, we've been burnt before by preview teasers that exhibited noticeable downgrades when final code eventually hits stores. Armed with a pristine 4K capture of the trailer direct from Microsoft's on-site media riser, we set out to answer the question - is this the real deal?
Let's bang one nail on the head right away: resolution. Anthem is running at 3840x2160 in this demo, but it does so using checkerboard rendering. Looking through our capture, we noted distinctive artefacting on moving edges, presenting as a faint criss-cross pattern where only half the pixels are shaded. The presentation still looks pin-sharp, even with a compromise that effectively halves native 4K resolution. The technique works for three reasons: firstly, the human eye can't really track precision detail in motion (checkerboarding looks very good on slower motion scenes), secondly 'sample and hold' LCD technology cuts resolved resolution in motion, and finally the tiny pixel pitch on 4K screens makes discerning pixel-level detail extremely difficult any way.
This is not a trivial implementation of the technique by the Frostbite team - it's the result of a concentrated R&D effort that initially aimed to exploit the power of the PlayStation 4 Pro GPU for 4K display owners, and we've already seen a successful roll-out of the technology in BioWare's own Mass Effect Andromeda, running at a lesser 1800p on PS4 Pro. It's not a 'true 4K', but the fact that we're seeing it in the Anthem demo lends more weight to this as an authentic Xbox One X reveal. If there's any doubt as to whether it's a PC version running at max settings, to an extent this puts that to rest - Frostbite aims for full native rendering in its PC incarnation.
On the face of it, Anthem is a technological miracle, but forensic analysis reveals that a combination of Frostbite's continual visual evoluton paired with smart rendering techniques makes this viable as an authentic Xbox One X experience.
DICE has spoken at length about its checkerboard rendering techniques at a recent GDC 2017 presentation. Despite utilising specific ID buffer hardware unique to PlayStation 4 Pro, the 'future work' part of the talk discusses planned workarounds for Xbox hardware and in the Anthem demo, it seems that we now have physical evidence that the technology is in place on Microsoft consoles. Curiously, it also mentions dynamic resolution scaling working well with checkerboarding - but so far, there's no evidence of resolution scaling within the Anthem demo.
That's the first point - as for frame-rates, we only have a 30fps feed from the Microsoft conference, which rules out accurate performance test. From eye-balling the feed though, we did catch some light stutter right at the very end of the demo - as the Freelancers jump into the light - but again, that could well be an issue in the feed sent out. As things stand, the rest of gameplay unfolds with a stutter-free 30fps cadence, and with v-sync engaged. Given all that's going on in this demo - the 4K checkerboarding, huge levels of foliage, physics, and expansive levels with up to four players - a 30fps target is a realistic one. Sustaining this performance target makes sense. After all, there has to be parity with standard Xbox One gamers for online play.
And clearly, with so much going on from a visual perspective, something must give in a real-time rendering scenario. On first viewing, Anthem has a visual impact that makes you wonder if we're in fact looking at a PC version running on max settings. And certainly as far as foliage draw distances, shadow draw, and the volumetric lighting quality goes, that's true. DICE's physically based rendering - first seen in Star Wars Battlefront, and beautifully refined for its sequel - also takes centre stage here, and looks stunning. To what extent this could be noticeably improved on a maxed out PC version remains to be seen.
But there are still caveats that point to console-level settings for the game. Objects and trees are unaffected, but ground textures suffer from noticeable limits in draw distance. This isn't a texture filtering issue either, ground textures materialise into view just before the player walks over them, with normal and specular maps switching in. Again we're staring at a pre-alpha showing, but it's a drawback to the presentation that we'd not expect on PC at ultra settings.
Of course, lighting and effects are exceptional; the Frostbite engine has been continually refined across this console generation, and Anthem sees the whole gamut of the engine's visual features brought into play. There's per-pixel lighting on particles, god rays, and a cinematic bokeh depth of field, mainly used in cut-scenes. However, taking nothing away from the overall visual accomplishment here, console-level settings are evident - for example, screen-space reflections do a good job of mirroring the environment, but lack representation of particles, gunfire or explosions. Yes, it's a nitpick, but we do wonder if there's another level to the rendering setup reserved for the higher PC settings.
Minor pop-in and less-than-perfect effects work can't detract from the sheer impact of the visual package, though. Anthem's rich effects work includes a surfeit of GPU-driven particles, and uses Frostbite's volumetric fog and smoke to add weight to the air. Even the opening hub area is nicely fleshed out, filled with active, bustling NPCs, each with motion capture - though we suspect that a lot of scripting is used here to catch the action from the best angle. One area we're less keen on is the uncanny facial animation - body movements are great, but the initial shot doesn't hold up to the realism of faces used in Battlefield series. And through all that, the motion blur implementation isn't perfect, with missing coverage in some scenes.
It's these imperfections that help to make Anthem's E3 2017 showing that much more authentic, more real, and less likely to end in another downgrade drama. A forensic breakdown of Anthem's visual make-up takes little away from the tremendous impact of the game's visuals, nor from the scale and scope of the remarkably rich, massive vertical world the title is built around. The Frostbite engine once again pushes console visuals to new heights, but what we've seen does point to this being feasible on Xbox One X hardware, with compromises you'd expect to get this running on a six teraflop GPU at a 2160p output. On top of this, bearing in mind that Anthem is a multiplatform title, it'll be fascinating to see how this game will scale up to high-end PCs, and down to PS4 Pro, PS4 and of course, Xbox One. Time will tell, but we can't wait to see more.

Anthem gameplay demo lives up to Xbox One X’s 4K promises.
Anthem will be released next year.
Anthem , BioWare’s next big action role-playing game, looked stunning in its Xbox One X gameplay demo from Microsoft’s E3 press briefing. But how does it hold up to scrutiny?
The team at Digital Foundry examined the Anthem gameplay footage that was said to be running on Xbox One X, which Microsoft is billing as the most powerful gaming console ever. Digital Foundry confirmed a 3840x2160 resolution, but with a slight catch: The 4K output is paired with artifacting, which indicates checkerboard rendering, a technique that refers to only rendering 50 percent of a scene and interpolating the rest. This is a method used to great effect in titles like Guerrilla Games’ Horizon Zero Dawn to achieve 4K resolution.
Despite that, motion blurring helps to smoothen the image out and, as Digital Foundry notes, “The feed still comes out looking pin-sharp.” The video ends with Digital Foundry pointing out that while the demo isn’t necessarily a clear example of how the final game will run, it does look promising for what Microsoft wants to accomplish when it comes to 4K gaming on the Xbox One X.
Anthem is set in a post-apocalyptic world where giant monsters run rampant. The game features lush worlds and beautiful environments that players will have the option to explore. You can watch extended gameplay footage, which features a more in-depth look at characters’ exosuits, called Javelins.
The full video, including Digital Foundry’s analysis, can be seen above. Anthem will be released in 2018 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and Windows PC.
Anthem release date delayed, EA confirms.
Anthem is the next big IP from Bioware, the creators of the Mass Effect and Dragon Age series. First revealed at E3 2017, the epic sci-fi RPG is set to take full advantage of Xbox One X as players explore a broken, battered post-apocalyptic world.
Trusted Reviews has compiled everything you need to know include all the latest news, release date, gameplay and more!
Anthem release date delayed.
Anthem has officially been delayed to 2019 to make room for a new Battlefield instalment in 2018. The upcoming RPG will now launch for PS4, Xbox One and PC in early 2019, Electronic Arts confirmed in its most recent earnings report.
Anthem – What is it?
Anthem is an open-world RPG that takes place in a strange, hostile alien world where humanity lives in a giant walled city, hiding from giant monsters. You take the role of a Freelancer; a heroic group that act as humanity’s guardians and scouts beyond the wall in Iron Man-like suits of armour, known as Javelins.
Anthem trailer – How does it look?
We saw a brief teaser trailer at EA’s E3 press conference, but now we also have six minutes of gameplay to enjoy. Watch the latest below:
Anthem gameplay – How does it play?
Anthem is an open world RPG. During the Microsoft E3 2017 conference we saw you venture out of the city to find a missing group. The mission let you gather other freelancers into your squad and demoed a variety of enemies, ranging from hulking, wild alien monsters to mysterious “Scars”, which appeared more advanced and had guns.
Exact customisation and gameplay options remain vague, but Bioware has confimred you will be able to customise your Freelancer’s Javelin armour. Javelins will have differing classes, each with their own set of skills and equipment options. During the brief demo we saw Bioware demo the generalist Ranger and tank Collossus classes. Each had a variety of skills, including jump pack and grenade abilities. The demo indicated the game will have a similar control system to Mass Effect: Andromeda.
Anthem Microtransactions – Will it have them?
Again, following criticisms of Star Wars Battlefront 2’s microtransactions, fans are querying whether EA’s subsequent titles will include similarly invasive forms of loot boxes. EA is remaining coy on the matter and whether they’ll be included in Anthem, the latest statement coming from creative director Brenon Holmes that the subject remains “ongoing discussion“.
Could Anthem make up for the lukewarm reception to Mass Effect Andromeda? We hope so!
Anthem Release Date Delay, Trailer, Anthem Gameplay, Xbox One X, PS4, BioWare - Everything We Know.
BioWare's brand new IP, Anthem, looks like it's arriving early in 2019, and we've rounded up every detail for you right here.
Microsoft debuted the first Anthem gameplay footage at E3 2017, showing off BioWare’s brand new title running on the Xbox One X. While Anthem won’t be releasing until 2019, we’ll update this page with all the essential info, including the Anthem Release Date and Pre-Order details, so keep checking back.
Anthem Essential Information:
Anthem Release Date.
UPDATE 2, Jan 30, 2018: EA has confirmed that Anthem will release early in 2019, and not Fall 2018 as had been expected. This follows a Kotaku story that detailed the game's delay out of 2018.
UPDATE: A report on Koatku about the state of Bioware and the games it is developing has stated that the Anthem release date is now early 2019. While this isn't an official date given by EA (no firm date has ever been given), Kotaku's Jason Schreier has regularly reported on the studio with accuracy.
An official release window of 2018 was given for Anthem, which means it will likely be releasing towards the latter half of the year, given how everything else that was slated for a 2018 release in Microsoft’s presentation were all denoted by ‘Spring 2018’. The official YouTube page for Anthem gives a Fall 2018 release date . This release date is expected to change in line with the Kotaku report.
It should also be noted that, although Anthem gameplay was shown off for the very first time at Microsoft’s presentation, there is no exclusivity deal for the game whatsoever. Anthem will be releasing on Xbox One, PS4, and PC.
Brand New Anthem Gameplay Reveal.
As the Anthem gameplay demo began, we found ourselves in a futuristic market setting. The futuristic nature of Anthem was largely revealed during a brief teaser in EA’s presentation on June 10, but this was the first time we actually got a proper look at the world in which Anthem would be taking place.
The gameplay demo began in first person mode (although the game is played from a third-person perspective), as the player was approached by another character, requesting their help with a matter outside The Wall, which is said to shield all of humanity from the dangers of the vast, open world.
Accepting the mission, our character got into an Exosuit, which was revealed to be the more all-round version named Ranger, while our partner got into an Exosuit type named Colossus, this latter model being the tank class of the game.
The Exosuits, or Javelins, as the commentary called them, allow for humans to gain superhuman abilities, for example being able to fly or propel themselves underwater, as well as special abilities like missile barrages, and a shockwave that at one point the Colossus class sent out.
It looks like there’ll be a loot angle for Anthem, as at one point the main character picked up a new, better weapon off the corpse of a fallen enemy, and both her and the character in the Colossus Javelin remarked at how much nicer this weapon was. Perhaps the character of Anthem are in on the whole ‘farming’ items joke.
The weather, while out in the wide open world, can also have a dramatic affect on each of your missions. We saw a severe storm interrupt the gameplay in this demo of Anthem, as all plans went completely out of the window, and all the main human characters were forced to beat a hasty retreat and shelter from the storm.
An extremely varied set of wildlife can also be found throughout the open world, as while some are friendly, others will attack you on sight. We saw several smaller, horse-like creatures galloping past the two characters at one point, only for a few of them to be lifted up into the air and killed by a far larger monster, which the humans then had to make a quick retreat from.
Digital Foundry also took a look at Anthem running on the Xbox One X, and examined whether the game could in fact deliver on the promise of native 4K gaming on the console.
There was some speculation that the Anthem gameplay demo shown during Microsoft’s E3 2017 conference was in fact running on PC. This has now been debunked, with EA's Patrick Soderlund telling Digital Foundry that the demo was in fact a real-time demo running on Xbox One X.
What Kind of Game is Anthem?
Anthem looks set to be a large scale shared-world shooter in the vein of Destiny (although played from a third-person perspective), but it seems story will be a major part of the experience.
Drew Karpyshyn, a BioWare veteran who has worked as a designer and writer on multiple projects including Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2 (lead writer), is working on Anthem. That’s excellent news for anyone worried the game would eschew narrative in favour of multiplayer combat.
In terms of what kind of tone Anthem is going to be, BioWare’s Aaryn Flynn (studio general manager and vice president) has stated (via Eurogamer) that the game is going to be more “science fantasy” rather than the "hardcore science fiction" of Mass Effect.
"It's in a genre we call science fantasy, very much like Star Wars, very much like the Marvel Universe. You see a lot of amazing things happening but we don't worry too much about why they are happening or how they are happening; the science of it."
"Mass Effect is more a real hard core science fiction IP,” Flynn added. “[Anthem] is much more about just having fun in a game world that is really lush and exotic and really sucks you in."
Anthem Corn Maze.
BioWare released a brand-new Anthem video showcasing the corn maze it created to promote the game. The rather tongue-in-cheek video shows the maze being built and features members of the team talking about the process. You can check out the video below.
Anthem Confirmed to be a '10-year' Project for EA and BioWare.
EA has talked about how long it sees the Anthem project running between EA and BioWare, with comments from EA vice president Patrick Soderlund on the Xbox Daily Show being reminiscent of how Activision talked about Destiny - a game many people expect Anthem to resemble.
"[Anthem is] a social game where you and your friends go out on quests and journeys," said Soderlund (via Eurogamer). "It's a game that we've been working on for almost four years now. And it's a game that - once we launch it next year - will be the start of maybe a 10-year journey for us."
Anthem PS4 Trailer Controversy.
Anthem made headlines for the wrong reasons early in July, 2017, when a trailer for the game appeared on the PlayStation YouTube Channel. The trailer showed the E3 2017 gameplay, but with the button prompts from the PlayStation 4. There was an assumption this was PS4 footage of Anthem, but eagle-eyed viewers noticed that something was up: the button prompts had other symbols underneath.
This screen grab shows the Anthem trailer blunder.
In what turned out to be a bit of an embarrassment for EA, the trailer posted on the PlayStation channel was in fact the original Xbox One X gameplay video but with PlayStation button prompts inserted over the top. While likely a practice that happens a lot, it’s not often made so obvious by sloppy editing. The trailer has now been removed from the PlayStation YouTube channel.
Anthem is yet to be shown running on PlayStation hardware.
This might be all the information we have to go for now with Anthem, but make sure to keep this page in mind, as we'll be updating it with all future info that we obtain on the game.

Following its reveal during the EA Play press conference, EA gave the world its first look at BioWare's new IP, Anthem, during Microsoft's E3 press conference today. While the game was shown running on the new Xbox One X console, it wasn't clear what other platforms would host the title. EA has now cleared the air and confirmed that Anthem is coming to PS4, Xbox One, and PC. It launches sometime in Fall 2018.
Developed by BioWare Edmonton, the studio behind Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Anthem is a new sci-fi action game set in a "vast open world." The game pits players in the role of a Freelancer tasked with exploring unknown planets and protecting humanity. You'll be able to outfit your Freelancer with customizable exo-suits called Javelins, which can be equipped with a range of new gear you either craft or acquire.
The game is being "built around a live service" and features a heavy emphasis on cooperative play. EA has confirmed that up to four players can team up to complete missions together. During today's gameplay demonstration, we got our first look at one called "Hell or High Water," which took players through a dense jungle filled with giant creatures and through a bioluminescent underwater cavern.
Like a number of other of titles, the game will run in 4K and feature other enhancements when played on Xbox One X. You can watch the full gameplay demonstration from Microsoft's press conference here. You can also find more news from today's press conference in our roundup. Anthem, the new IP from BioWare, will not be released in 2018 as previously planned. Instead, the Destiny-esque action game will launch in early 2019, EA confirmed today during its quarterly earnings call with investors. For its part, the company claims this is not a delay.
Prior to the call, it shared this with the Wall Street Journal, confirming a recent report from Kotaku that said Anthem had been delayed. Speaking with the WSJ, EA CFO Blake Jorgensen stated this was not actually a delay. However, that appears to be untrue, given the company had previously cited a 2018 release for the game, which is headed to PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
EA didn't go into great deal about the reasoning behind the delay. Kotaku's report suggested it was due at least in part to issues with development, though the statement to the WSJ attributes it instead to a desire to release the game during a less crowded period. EA only briefly addressed the subject during this afternoon's conference call with investors, and it was presented as if this were not a delay. We'll report back with anything it has to say during the Q&A portion of the call. Its actual earnings report made no mention of the news.
Dragon Age executive producer Mark Darrah recently confirmed he had joined the Anthem project, also in the role of executive producer. BioWare as a whole has seen a great deal of change in the last year, particularly since the troubled launch of Mass Effect: Andromeda early in 2017. BioWare Edmonton GM Aaryn Flynn announced his departure last summer, with Casey Hudson returning to the company to take up his position. Andromeda developer BioWare Montreal was later absorbed into EA Motive.
Anthem for Xbox One: Everything we know so far.
Back at E3 2017, Electronic Arts revealed its next major franchise, "Anthem." Showcased alongside the Xbox One X, the game shows potential and is shaping up to be one of the publisher's most promising new franchises in some time.
However, after its initial E3 debut, we're now left with more questions than answers. With little information outside of a seven-minute demo, details surrounding the game still remain somewhat vague. We've brought together everything we know so far about Anthem and what to expect ahead of its planned launch this fall.
Story: Venturing beyond the walls.
Coming from BioWare, the renowned developer of Mass Effect and Dragon Age, Anthem marks a new and ambitious direction for the studio. In the game's world, hostile monsters rule the wilderness, and humanity has taken refuge inside a walled city known as "Fort Tarsis." Freelancers, bounty hunters bearing "Javelin" exosuits, are among the few who can venture outside these walls, forming the basis for Anthem's gameplay. Diverging from the developer's heritage solidified in narrative-driven experiences, Anthem pursues an online shared-world, built with action-adventure mechanics in mind. While a story is set to intertwine with Anthem's gameplay in some way, few details have been shared up until now.
Electronic Arts has been keen to stress that Anthem is not a role-playing experience.
However, that's not to say story won't be a notable component of Anthem – quite the opposite. Even if action lays at the center of Anthem, the developer's role-playing legacy won't be completely out of the picture. Earlier this year during a conference call with investors, EA CEO Andrew Wilson purposely guaranteed that Anthem won't leave behind "the great RPG character development and story progression that BioWare is known for," even if a new, and potentially ambitious approach may be taken in the process.
Gameplay: A world of loot to explore.
While Anthem's first on-stage demonstration teased class-based gameplay, loot systems and crafting, the game's publisher, Electronic Arts, has been keen to stress that Anthem is not a role-playing experience. Andrew Wilson has previously emphasized to investors that Anthem is being created as "an action-adventure, not RPG" – assumedly putting focusing development on core combat mechanics.
So, if Anthem isn't an RPG, what exactly is it? EA's claims somewhat echo statements previously made by Bungie, with their own online shared-world shooter, Destiny. Back in 2014, the studio was reluctant to pin down a specific genre for the game – even to this day, its genre is still somewhat ambiguous. After the reveal, Anthem's influence from role-playing titles is still evident. As of right now, the game appears to be shaping up as an action RPG, taking advantage of some elements seen in massively multiplayer online games (MMOs).
The vertical-slice of Anthem gameplay showed for its reveal heavily revolved around the cooperative multiplayer features of its sandbox. Featuring scripted interactions between friends as a part of the demo, communication and teamwork were portrayed as integral to the intended experience.
Shortly after its E3 debut reveal, Corey Gaspur, the previous lead designer on Anthem, assured fans that the game will also accommodate solo players. Designed with both single-player and cooperative parties in mind, players can supposedly "enjoy an amazing BioWare story and explore an incredible open world," regardless of their allies (or lack thereof).
Exactly how Anthem will handle single-player is yet to be disclosed, though this will assumedly be near-identical to cooperative play. Like similar games on the market, we can expect shared-world content to cater for both solo players and groups. It's also safe to assume Anthem will be an entirely online experience, forcing those playing solo to still connect to game servers.
As expected from a modern multiplayer title, Anthem will adopt a Games-as-a-Service (GaaS) model for providing content post-launch.
Anthem will leverage online features significantly more than any other BioWare titles.
Live services are nothing new in the modern age, allowing dozens of games to maintain healthy player bases – sometimes years after their release. By purchasing Anthem, you'll be buying into the game's service, with future updates expected after launch. Few details have been shared on how this "live service" will develop going forward – although content updates, events and larger expansions are all common with this business model.
This also feeds into Anthem's concept of a shared open world, adding an interconnected and somewhat dynamic edge to the experience. Anthem will leverage online features significantly more than any other BioWare titles, through both gameplay and post-launch support.
As briefly teased during its unveiling, collectible loot will also play a major role in Anthem's progression system. Examining footage, instances of both new weapons and suit upgrades are among the loot offerings, obtained through both randomized drops and crafting.
The weapon unlocked during the demonstration was a Level 35 "Legendary" rifle, which points toward rarity tiers and gear progression systems, as seen in RPGs. Searching for new gear, grinding through upgrades and other progression mechanics can all be expected at the heart of Anthem's gameplay loop.
Following the abysmal launch of Star Wars Battlefront II, a game also from Electronic Arts, questions still lie over Anthem's gameplay and item economy. Battlefront II was ridiculed at launch for its "pay-to-win" approach to monetization and loot boxes, leading to widespread outrage, which even extended to government intervention. With similar purchases expected to surface in Anthem, the publisher will have to tread carefully how these are implemented. Brenon Holmes, creative director at BioWare has stated there's an "ongoing discussion" in how a loot box economy may be implemented, though details aren't set in stone.
Enhancements: What to expect on Xbox One X.
Electronic Arts appears to have worked closely with Microsoft to tailor its upcoming titles for Xbox One X, and Anthem is no exception.
Electronic Arts appears to have worked closely with Microsoft to tailor its upcoming titles for Xbox One X.
Used to showcase the power of the console at Microsoft's E3 2017 press conference, Anthem will run at 4K resolution on the console, with support for High Dynamic Range (HDR). With a 30 frames per second (FPS) gameplay video feed at E3, it's also safe to assume this will be the target framerate on Xbox One X.
Upon further analysis from Digital Foundry, Anthem's supposed Xbox One X reveal points toward a "checkerboarding" technique used to achieve a 4K output. Although implementation can differ between titles, the technique essentially renders a smaller percentage of the image and estimates the remaining pixels. Reducing tax on the system for a little trade-off, this allows resources to be used on other visual enhancements.
While Anthem does appear to be pushing the Xbox One X to its limit, the game is currently among the most graphically impressive titles showcased on the console. However, as a vertical slice of the full experience, it remains to be seen how this performance translates to the final product.
Preparing for Anthem.
Electronic Arts is yet to commit to a release date for Anthem, aside from the period of "fall 2018." With nearly a year remaining until its expected launch, a lot could change before release. As of right now, the game isn't even available to pre-order in the United States for Xbox One, showing it's still early days for the project. However, like many big-budget games of today, expect preorders to start at $59.99, with higher tier editions containing bonus items. As always, let us know what you think of Anthem so far, in the comments section.
