With the immeasurable success that Agatha Christie’s detective series’ have had over the years ,ranging from her best selling novels to the immensely popular TV shows Poirot and Marple it, seemed it would only be a matter of time before that success found its way to one of the world’s most popular forms of media, video games. The timely release of The ABC Murders is no slap dash attempt to cash in on one of the world’s most famous fictional detectives, Poirot, though; on the contrary this game’s developers have done their utmost to do the Belgian super sleuth justice. Right from the off this title gives you a feeling that you’ll be in for a troublesome time (in the best possible way) that really will put your little grey cells to work. As soon as you load the game you’re greeted, if that’s what you could really call it, by the image of a woman lying prone on a wooden floor with an ominous knife wielding silhouette stood over her. This is merely a loading screen but it sets the tone of the game nicely before you meet Detective Hercule Poirot, staring out across London from his Whitehaven apartment. You can have three profiles created for The ABC Murders , meaning you can go back and play the story again without losing previous stats. However, once you have a 100% completion stat on this title as soon as you hit Play from the main menu all of your previous progress and Ego Points (which I’ll explain in a little bit) are wiped. It’s a disappointing quirk. The interface is simple, but does the job effectively. From the main menu you can start or continue your journey your journey as one of the greatest fictional Detective’s the world has ever seen, as well as fiddle with some in game options and choose your Xbox Live profile. The Bonus menu option is a nice little touch from the developers; from here you can: View timelines of the games events, these are screen shots of key points in the story with a back ground narrative provided from a voiceover by Poirot. Watch reconstructions of each murder, you are responsible for recreating these in the story mode itself but in this menu the reconstructions arre played out in full for each of the unfortunate victims and their untimely demise. The final subsection of the Bonuses menu is Achievement which as you may imagine shows you what achievements are available from the title. Unfortunately it does not tell you the unlock criteria until you have already earned each one. Time to show the world what Poirot is made of. Once you’ve selected Play from the Main Menu the real fun begins. The game opens with a panning shot of Detective Poirot’s Whitehaven apartment which eventually cuts to an interior scene where Poirot and his faithful sidekick Arthur Hastings can be see sat at the dining table reading their morning papers. Here the cel-shaded visual style is on show – and throughout the game this style complements the detective genre and the game’s dark themes perfectly without allowing it to become overwhelmingly morbid. When the apartment door is knocked and a postal delivery is slid under the door, Hastings and Poirot have occasion to speak for the first time. In a game like this, repetitive or forced dialogue is a game breaker. Thankfully, the voice acting in The ABC Murders remains impeccable throughout. It’s never forced and the actors seem fully committed in their roles. This allows you to become immersed in the story, continuing to engage you as you delve deeper and deeper into the mystery surrounding the murders. Take to the streets and learn the ropes. That postal delivery includes a letter that, whilst seeming harmless to Hastings, has an altogether more sinister feel to it if Poirot is to be believed. The detective’s gut feeling eventually proves to be correct when Poirot and Hastings are summoned to the scene of an apparent murder in Andover, by Chief Inspector James Harold Japp. It is here in Andover that we are first handed the reins in terms of gameplay, and our detecting begins in earnest. Whether a point and click adventure lives or dies is determined by two factors – engagement, and control scheme. Developed on PCs, the mouse is the natural input method for this genre, but there have been some very successful adventures that make good use of the gamepad. Unfortunately, the control scheme here is somewhat clunky. It is worth persevering with, though, even if it’s a control system that will sometimes see you wander haphazardly into a travel case or select a bed when you in fact wanted to inspect the night stand. While the actual movement and selection processes can sometimes be clunky, cumbersome and time consuming (Poirot is a distinguished gentleman and will run for no one, he’d rather amble everywhere taking in the scenery) everything else about the control system works. With the “Y” button being used for inspection, the “X” button being the action/interact button and “A” opening dialogue with the various characters the system is simple yet serves the exact purpose that it’s supposed to. It’s just as well this system is simple because the puzzle scenario system is a bit less forgiving… You’ve found an item that you want to interact with? Great! What’s not so great is knowing that you’re now going to have to use the temperamental and sometimes downright uncooperative puzzle control system. A lot of this system involves rotating items to a particular angle so you can access the part of it you want. That sounds simple enough but when the item doesn’t have any further interactions other than viewing it, it can sometimes be extremely frustrating. You can rotate an item every which way from Sunday and it still won’t trigger the discovery of a clue. Rotate that item a 360 o all the way back to where you started though and hey presto! Clue discovered. This troublesome viewing mechanic is a burden in itself but coupled with the “LT” and “Right stick” mechanic it increases its frustration factor ten-fold. You grab an item with “LT” and you move it using “Right Stick.” Again, what sounds like a simple mechanic breaks down, as the “Right Stick” element of this mechanic is extremely inconsistent. I won’t divulge details (spoilers) but attempting to remove two screws from an item proved troublesome; the first the screw was rotating but just kept jumping back to its starting position. Frustratingly, the lack of an audio prompt indicating the screw was blocked or stuck proved I was taking the right action, but the game was failing to comply. Eventually, around the fourth or fifth attempt, the screw freed itself and all was right with the world until I came to the realisation I still had to remove that second screw. Wiping the sweat from my brow and rolling up my sleeves I got ready to have a disagreement with the control system. But this time there was no disagreement. The screw was removed without any issues. It would seem the age old adage of “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, but expecting different results” can’t be applied to The ABC Murders – at times doing the same thing over and over again can sometimes lead to a different result. Grumblings about a temperamental control system aside, The ABC Murders can be thoroughly enjoyable and engaging experience. The observation systems, which involves you moving your cursor around an area until a vibration occurs and then honing in on that area for a clue, works much better than the puzzle control system. The interrogation system works just as well. The relatively simple multiple choice scenario, with each of the controller’s face buttons representing a choice, is rewarding in the way the game gives feedback on your choices. Do something “Poirotesque” and you’ll be awarded with Ego Points for acting as the detective would, saying the things and asking the questions Poirot would. This system also carries over into the open world gameplay by awarding Ego Points for inspecting your glorious moustache in a mirror – a nice reference to the actor most associate with the role, David Suchet. By its nature The ABC Murders may not have much replay value, but it’s certainly not a short game. A seven-hour story mode may result in 100% completion, but if you haven’t unlocked all 600 Ego Points, you may be tempted to replay just to prove that you are every bit as smart as the great detective himself. Aside from its sometimes clunky control scheme, frustratingly temperamental puzzle system, odd choices of camera angles and mistimed character mouth movements that don’t quite match their speech, the title is extremely well put together. This may sound like a comprehensive list of issues but in reality there’s nothing game breaking here, and whilst irritating the immersion remains unbroken. Should you consider picking up The ABC Murders at the full asking price of £31.99? Probably not, unless you are an avid Poirot fan, or fan of the point and click adventures genre. if that’s the case, or you can pick it up on sale, it’s excellent way to waste an afternoon or two whilst putting your grey matter to the test. The title whilst somewhat afflicted by a control system that is at times clunky and at other times downright unforgiving is still a game to be enjoyed. The solving of the puzzles and discovery of key clues is rewarding and definitely puts your brain to work in ways many other genres can't. The cel-shaded graphics are beautifully done and suits the game excellently. However, is this a title one worth buying? At it's full retail price probably not, unless you are both a huge Agatha Christie fan and avid point and click adventure gamer. If you are one of these two then this title is still worth buying but maybe it would be worthwhile waiting for it to come down in price as the story isn't extremely lengthy, in the region of 5-7 hours without a guide, and doesn't have a huge amount of replayability.
