PDP Afterglow Prismatic Controller Review. PDP Afterglow Prismatic Controller. USER SCORE. You’ve probably at least once in your lifetime used a PDP controller, whether you realized it or not. The iconic Afterglow controller look hasn’t changed much since the PS3 and Xbox 360 days, and this is because Performance Design Products is using a template that works. The look of the controller is a marketing tool, consistent across all platforms and generations, much like their lineup of Afterglow Headsets. However, PDP controllers from the past have always been greeted with mixed reception from reviewers and consumers alike. Has PDP been able to shake some of the doubters perceptions of their controllers? We think so. From the Box. Dual Multi-Function Wheels: Benefit from the Dual Multi-Function wheels with 6 programmable actions. Customize your Afterglow Prismatic Controller to fit your gaming style. At a quick glance, the wired Afterglow Primsatic Xbox One controller looks like a standard Xbox Controller. The buttons are all in the same place, and the overall look is very similar to Microsoft’s official controller. Outside of the see through plastic and fancy lights, someone not entirely versed in official versus unofficial products might not be able to notice the difference. It is when you flip the controller over where you notice the biggest difference: extra buttons. Microsoft has been working on their own controller with extra buttons, but this controller – Xbox Elite Controller – comes with a hefty price tag of 149.99. The Afterglow Controller with similar functionality – although without the swappable parts – will run you only 49.99. For those looking for a better First Person Shooter experience at a lower price point, the PDP controller is the way to go. Aside from the extra buttons on the back, PDP has put headset audio controls right on the controller itself. A little button near the right analog stick will allow you to use the D-pad to adjust chat and game audio. It is a really nifty feature, especially when you pair it with the Afterglow AG 9 Headset – any headset will work, but we really, REALLY like the AG 9! Like all Afterglow products, the Prismatic Xbox One controller does light up. Using a somewhat confusing combinations of button presses and analog stick turns, you can change the color as well as its brightness. I set this up once, and have never changed it. It’s a cool feature, but like all Afterglow products, it’s a brand defining feature, rather than something that is a ‘must have.’ Functionality. The two wheel buttons on the back of the controller can be mapped to any button. I’ve experimented with many layouts for different games – which can be saved by the way – and often ended up mapping the back buttons to the L3 and R3 buttons (clicking in right stick and left stick). For most games – including Halo, Call of Duty, Assassins Creed, and more – often map running to the left or right stick click. This often puts extra stress on the thumbs, resulting in pain over short play times. The ability to remap the run – and often the zoom for weapons – to these back buttons is great. This controller is my go-to for first person shooters, and other games as well. Those who play FPS titles, however, will have the most to gain from the mapping ability. A Game Saver. The biggest reason I wanted to use this controller was actually for playing Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. In my Phantom Pain review, I came to the conclusion that although the game is an easy 9.0 – 10.0/10.0, the awful controls on Xbox One made the game frustrating difficult to play. The main item used in that title is the binoculars, used for scouting enemy bases and tagging enemy soldiers. Using the binoculars was mapped to the RB button on Xbox One. Unlike triggers that can be held rather comfortably, trying to hold down RB, while clicking in the right stick and moving the focus with the left stick proved to be difficult. More often than not, my finger eventually slipped off the RB button making me start over. Using the buttons on the back of the PDP controller has ended this major issue for me. I have mapped the binoculars to the left, back button and the zoom to the right back button. Problem solved. I know many people will argue, “Well the new Xbox One standard controllers have a mapping ability too!” While this is true, the controllers don’t actually have extra buttons, so in the case of Metal Gear Solid 5, there really isn’t a great place to remap RB too. Conclusion. Overall, it is hard to not recommend the Afterglow Prismatic wired Xbox One controller from Performance Design Products. Although you lose the wireless functionality, these controllers are even cheaper than your standard Xbox One controller from Microsoft. Any one with reservations because of past experiences with Afterglow controllers really shouldn’t be worried. The design, construction, and functionality of this controller are on par with your standard Xbox One controllers, and are a much cheaper option over the new Xbox One Elite Controller. Like the color changing. No issues at all. I would recommend this to a friend. Cool controller. I like the look of this controller and the light is nice. It works like it should and the reason why I didn't give it a 5/5, it's a bit on the expensive side and the d-pad response is not my cup if tea. I would recommend this to a friend. So I got an Xbox One afterglow prismatic controller and I accidentally mapped the control sticks and can't remap them. Anyone know how to reset the controller? Power the XBOX one console on. Plug the smaller end of the controllers USB-B micro cable into the top of the controller. Hold down on the directional pad (D-Pad) and plug the larger side of the USB cable into the XBOX one console while still holding down. The controllers red LED lights will illuminate and the controller will begin to vibrate. You may then release the down input on the directional pad (D-Pad) Press A on the controller. The controller will then stop vibrating and the LED lights will power off. Fully rotate both joysticks in a complete clockwise motion and pull each trigger fully (LT and RT) Press down on the directional pad (D-Pad) Let me know if that helps. If any of that doesn't work you can also download the afterglow app on your Xbox One and reset your mapping manually. I had the same thing happen when I reset the controller. Just reset controller and rotate the joysticks separately and the triggers as well if that makes sense. Review — Xbox One: Afterglow Prismatic Controller. Performance Designed Product’s (PDP) Xbox One: Afterglow Prismatic Controller is a third-party controller for the Xbox One console. While many third-party controllers fail to capture the essence of the original’s quality, PDP has managed an impressive feat of both matching the quality and putting their own flavor onto the Xbox One controller. The first thing that stands out about the controller is the very fact that it is see through and actually has LED lights that glow. What is even more impressive is the very fact that you can change the color the controller glows, which adds a nice touch and personalizes the controller. While this is a very cool feature, there are some draw backs because of it. The outside of the controller is made of plastic and doesn’t feel very sturdy, which leads to durability issues. I dared not drop it, but if I had, I worried that it would quite possibly break. While this is not an issue for handling, it could be an issue for children using the controller, as they are more prone to accidents. This issue aside, the controller feels very nice in your hands and I did not feel handicapped one bit while playing with the controller in a competitive environment. While it’s not exact, PDP has managed to capture a highly similar feel to the first-party Xbox One controller, which cannot be said for most third-party accessories. All of the buttons feel crisp, the analogue sticks work splendidly, and even the D-pad feels like it is of first-party quality. There was quite a bit of care and attention to detail that PDP paid to the controller to ensure that players wouldn’t feel handicapped by using their controller. I would even go so far to say that the difference between the feel of PDP’s Afterglow controller and Microsoft’s first-party controller is so minimal that I wouldn’t mind in the least bit using the third-party controller while playing with friends, which is almost never the case, as I am very particular with how a controller feels. PDP nailed it in this respect and is the biggest reason why this controller is so wonderful. The rumble feature on the controller can also be toggled on and off, which is great for those who prefer not to play with rumble on. If the rumble feature is on though, you can actually see certain parts of the controller’s inside move, which is pretty cool. One of the Afterglow’s biggest features is the ability to map six actions to two wheels that are on the back of the controller. This is a nice feature that allows the controller to stand out from the standard Xbox One controller, although it may feel a little awkward not using buttons at first. I preferred to use buttons as that is what I was used to and I would sometimes get confused as to what action I mapped where, but with time and adjustment you eventually get the hang of it. While the Afterglow is a fantastic third-party controller, it does have some downsides. First off, there’s a huge learning curve in being able to use a lot of the controller’s unique features. While it was easy once I knew what I was doing, I had to read the instruction manual several times before I actually knew what to do and how to access these features. For younger players, this would be even more difficult. There is also the fact that the controller is completely wired and needs to be plugged in at all times. While this isn’t a huge deal, as the controller comes with 10 feet of USB cable, it is a little frustrating because the Xbox One’s USB ports are on the back of the system. These issues aside, PDP has managed to craft a wonderful third-party controller for the Xbox One with the Afterglow Prismatic Controller. While the price point is only $10 cheaper than the original at $49.99 MSRP, it has enough unique features and matches the quality of the original to warrant such a price. While the premise of the controller may seem a bit gimmicky, as it is called “Afterglow,” the customization makes the controller feel personalized, which cannot be matched and sets it apart not only from other third-party controllers but also from Microsoft’s own first-party controller itself. Furthermore, while the controller may not be as durable as the original, is not wireless, and has a steep learning curve, it matches the feel of Microsoft’s own counterpart which is its most important aspect. Gamer Professionals would like to thank the team at Performance Designed Products for sending a review unit. Xbox One UK. Xbox One and Xbox One X News, Game and Hardware Reviews and Competitions. Afterglow Prismatic Wired Controller for Xbox One Review. A controller, for most, is a very unique purchase. Some want a performance device, others look for a stylish new edition to their hardware collection. With that I introduce you to the Afterglow Prismatic Wired Controller for Xbox One from Performance Designed Products (PDP). There are many controllers you can purchase today as the Xbox One has been out over 2 years; however, whilst there are number of special edition controllers around, there’s not a great deal to separate them other than their colour schemes. Enter this offering from PDP – which glows in the dark! The Afterglow controller certainly gives you a different look while you’re in full gaming mode (especially in the dark). Many of you will have had your hands on a PDP controller at one point or another if you owned an Xbox 360. The PDP controllers have been fan favourite for quite some time and it’s easy to see why – they look like nothing else on the market! Putting aside the unique selling point on offer here, does this controller offer the quality and precision it should? Read on to see! The iconic signature of an Afterglow controller is the full LED stripe that runs along the edge of the entire controller, as you can see in the images and in our unboxing video. Both colour and brightness of the LED can be adjusted easily. Equipped with the highest quality ALPS analog sticks available, the Afterglow Prismatic Wired Controller offers solid gaming control and precision. There’s an integrated 3.5mm Audio Jack & Controls: Hook up your headset to the 3.5mm audio jack and enjoy chat and volume controls located directly on the controller. On the back of the controller are Dual Multi-Function Wheels with 6 programmable actions, allowing you to customize your Afterglow Prismatic Controller to fit your gaming style. Dual Rumble Motors & Impulse Triggers let you feel the action through your controller, in exactly the same way as the standard Xbox One controllers, ensuring you are fully immersed in your games and enjoy the experience. The Afterglow controller is compatible with the Xbox Accessories configuration app, so you can create, modify, save, and instantly recall custom profiles. As the Afterglow is a wired controller it does include a detachable 10ft (yes, I said 10ft) wire. There’s both an upside and downside with wired controllers; the upside is no need to worry about your controller running out half way through a full on round Rocket League, but the downside is the dreaded buzzing noise a wired controller makes whilst in party chat. As you can see in the video above the controller is awesome to look at, but how does it feel you may ask? The shell is made from a solid plastic that surprisingly doesn’t feel very slippery at all; in fact it actually felt comfortable to hold even after a few hours of gameplay. The buttons also feel comfortable and of good quality, especially the triggers. As you can see in the video there are two wheel buttons on eth rear of the controller, next to the Afterglow button. The two wheel buttons can be mapped to any other button. We’ve experimented with many layouts for different games – which can be saved using the Accessories App, by the way – and often ended up mapping the back buttons to the L3 and R3 buttons (clicking in left stick and right stick). Many games – including Halo, Call of Duty, Assassins Creed, and more – use a click of the stick to engage a run or sprint running to. This often puts extra stress on the thumbs, resulting in pain over short play times. The ability to remap the run – and often the zoom for weapons – to these back buttons is great. This controller is a go-to for first person shooters, and other games as well. Those who play FPS titles, however, will have the most to gain from the mapping ability. Performance Designed Products have really made a solid and exciting piece of hardware. The buttons are quality, as are the thumb sticks. The LED system might just be a fun gimmick but its inclusion certainly hasn’t impacted negatively on the form or function of the controller. Overall, it is hard to not recommend the Afterglow Prismatic wired Xbox One controller from Performance Design Products. Although you lose the wireless functionality, these controllers are even cheaper than your standard Xbox One controller from Microsoft and offer greater customisation thanks to the programmable buttons. Any one with reservations because of past experiences with Afterglow controllers really shouldn’t be worried. The design, construction, and functionality of this controller are on par with standard Xbox One controllers, and it’s a much cheaper option than the new Xbox One Elite Controller . E3 2014 isn't just all about games. Accessory makers for the video game industry descend upon downtown Los Angeles to show off their latest wares. PDP is here showing off the latest entry for their Afterglow brand of products. PDP makes a few accessories for the Xbox One and Xbox 360 that you might have picked up at one point. Their TV mounting solution for Kinect on the Xbox One has been well received and is even sold at the Microsoft Store. Here's a quick tease of their upcoming Xbox One Afterglow controller. Gaudy? Depends entirely on your tastes. While we might not be picking this up day one, it was pretty cool to check out. They had the Xbox 360 version of the Afterglow controller on hand-on, but only the image you see above for the Xbox One version. With the Xbox One Afterglow controller you get a transparent case that allows you to see the circuitry inside. You'll also have colorful light wrapping the exterior of the controller. It can cycle through various colors or you can set one color. It can also be configured to show red when the rumbler pack inside is activated. This is supposed to add to the immersion of playing a game like a first-person shooter. PDP didn't have a firm price set for this wild controller, but did say that it'll be available in early 2015. Anyone interesting in spicing up their Xbox One experience?
