Posted Mon 26th Jan 2015 19:00 by Ken Barnes. Drop in the ocean. Anyone that lived through the last couple of generations of console gaming has probably at least tried their hand at a water-based racing game. Whether it was the seminal Wave Race , the fondly-remembered Hydro Thunder , the massively underrated Splashdown , or even the somewhat disappointing Rapid Racer , more or less every platform has played host to a number of racing games with an aquatic flavour. With Riptide GP2, Vector Unit are attempting to carry on this grand tradition at a budget price, porting their mobile hit to Xbox One with a couple of changes supposed to make the game better suit the console experience. While that porting initially looks to have gone well – the visuals are smooth and crisp and the game handles nicely – there's still a definite mobile flavour hanging around that detracts from the overall experience. Racing on hydro jets – super-powered jet skis – you have to take on four different event types spread across thirteen courses. Straight up racing, hot laps, elimination events, and freestyle trick contests are on the cards here, with the single-player career tasking you with taking these on over and over again until you've beaten the game's final set of races, the Ultimate Cup. Now, thirteen courses sounds like a fair number, but while some of the track designs are intended to be wacky and arcade-like, they never really get into gear in that respect. Sure, a track will feature a jump over a waterfall or a sharp turn that takes place in a very choppy part of the sea, but there's rarely more than one of these highlights on any given course. This means that while there are indeed thirteen tracks on offer, they all end up meshing into one, making things feel far more repetitive than they really should. That mobile flavour that we mentioned isn't helped by that, but it rears its head most prevalently when it comes to your in-game career progression. New events (and sets of events) are unlocked based on how many stars you've collected in earlier contests, with those stars being awarded for finishing in the top three of any event. Time and time again, you'll finish a race only to find that you don't have enough stars to unlock the next one, meaning that you have to go back and do better in an earlier event. This creates strange situations where you'll be trying to get 1400 trick points on a track in order to obtain three stars, just so that you can unlock the next event which will see you trying to score 1600 trick points on the exact same track, with the same vehicle and time limit. Of course, by the time you have to double back, the game's sometimes unfairly unforgiving AI means that you've all but been forced to upgrade your vehicle in order to remain competitive, so the earlier events are relegated to being nothing but a complete waste of time given that you can now win them with your eyes closed. There are also times where you can unlock and win the last event in a set, only to be told that you still don't have enough stars to unlock the next set – which is somewhat nonsensical. With every race in the game taking place over just two laps (barring some later events that take place on a single shorter course, which extend to three) it's clear that Riptide GP2 has been designed for the sort of quick play sessions you'd want a mobile game to provide. Unfortunately, very little has been thrown into the mix to add any depth for console players. A "VR Challenge" mode allows you to take on ghosts of your friends in time trial races, and split-screen play for up to six players is a nice addition, but that's about all you get here in terms of any reasons to come back and play in the longer term. However, there's something ever so moreish about Riptide GP2, and it could well be something that indeed comes from the game's mobile roots. "I'll stop after this race" turns into "there are only five events left until I've unlocked the next set…I'll just play these and then stop" more often than not and while the list of events initially seems daunting as you're starting out, you'll find that should it grab you in any way at all, it won't be long before you've torn through the game and cleared everything. Indeed, we had unlocked all of the game's achievements and perfected everything in career mode after three sessions, which spanned seven or so hours in total. For the price, that's a fair amount of playing time. Riptide GP2 gets more than its fair share of the basics right on the water, which creates a strange anomaly where you've picked up the game for very little money and gotten a decent amount out of it, but are left thirsting for more. When you pick that perfect line through a set of tight turns and power away from your opponents, you'll wish the developers had included something even as basic as reverse versions of the tracks for a bit of variation, or tweaked the freestyle mode so that you weren't limited to just performing tricks after hitting pre-determined jumping points. When you successfully take the risk of hoping your boost will hold out down the final straight, rather than tricking to top it up in a head-and-head race for the line, you'll wish that the tracks were more off the wall and over-the-top, and that the races were longer. When you finally nail that three-input trick when leaping off a waterfall in order to get the required score in a freestyle contest with just a second to go, you'll note that full online play featuring things like tournaments, or even fuller offline multiplayer modes wouldn't have gone amiss…and how about a few weapons? The fact that you'll be wishing for these things means that Riptide GP2 indeed contains the makings of a truly excellent game. The problem is that while it's fun and cheap, the initial promise set forth by the first handful of races is never fully delivered upon. The only thing that really changes as you play through the mind-numbingly repetitive list of events is that your vehicle gets faster and that the AI matches you. This means that every race has the potential to feel pretty much like the first event, played over and over again. That isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it's far from a good one. Conclusion. Riptide GP2 contains the makings of a truly great game. Generally fun and moreish, the game is undeniably repetitive and whether or not you make it to the end of the main mode is going to be solely based on your tolerance for such unvaried gameplay. We're hoping that Vector Unit decides to work on a sequel that takes console platforms into account more readily and that they throw absolutely everything at it. It really wouldn't take a lot of work to turn this into a multi-title franchise that could become the Xbox platform's very own Wave Race. We would have been happy to pay twice as much for more depth, but as it stands, $4.99 isn't a terrible price for what you get here. About Ken Barnes. User Comments (6) I may pick this up at some point. I always liked games like Wave Race and Jet Moto. Personally i would give any mobile game higher than a 5. Thank you for the review and nice read but this game is garbage to me. I've picked it up, it's reasonably good nothing special but yes definitely only playable in short bursts. I had my hopes up until I watched the upload footage on the store. Just didn't impress me. Sequel could do great things through if they improve upon this. For £4 it's a lot of fun and with a filesize of less than 200mb you can be playing in a matter of seconds! Good, accurate review too. If it was £12 like some of the other mobile ports then fair enough but this is priced well and has no micro-transactions, certainly wouldn't call it garbage. I hope it does well and paves the way for more games like this to fill in the gaps between AAA releases. Great game bargin price to. I would love to see another mobile game this company made beach buggy racing it would be perfect for xbox one its a bit like Mario kart. Leave A Comment. Hypnotoad says buy it, but it, buy it. Not sure if being sarcastic or not (fry meme) but I bought it and its not to bad. and another comment about what gaz has, you may aswell list your whole game collection and get it over with. So happy to see this! I used to love that show. Perry King was the best! Now I can relive episodes from my favorite 80s TV show… And it is only $4.99 to boot! $4.99. H3LL YEAH! Loved Hydro Thunder. and once again another fecking game that’s NOT AVAILABLE IN AUSTRALIA. It’s usually due to the cost of getting a game classified here. For the cheaper titles and smaller numbers it just isn’t worth the cost but I believe the way games can be classified is changing which should help. In the meantime, switch your region to the US and purchase 🙂 The US switch does not work anymore since they cracked down on it. Nope, all you’ll get these days is an “unavailable in your region” error message regardless of device that you attempted purchase from. Just worked for me …. Friday, 23 January 2015. Total before Tax: $4.99. Total for this order: $4.99. just work for me as well. I have a Japanese Console in Japan and buy all my games from the US store. I have have nothing region locked. Not sure about Australia. How easy is this to do? Can it go back to AUS? Where do I get US$ from? So sick of that, so many releases are unavailable in Australia. and New Zealand 😦 still waiting for Toybox Turbos too. Sick of your own laws and country eh? No just sick of smart arse comments like this. I’ve bought it and enjoyed it anyway, in the interest of full disclosure. It was only 5 bucks, I got it, and am glad I did! It’s fun. Good game. It’s no hydrothunder, nor is it anything near Nintnedo’s WaveRace, but it’s good and fun, and cheap. No online play (bummer), but has split screen for up to 6 (guess I’d have to get more controllers). But for five bucks, what can you really expect. It is good, fun, and looks decent. Pick it up. These are the kinds of five dollar quality titles that should be supported. I was surprised how good it looks to be honest….First thing I thought was Damn, it looks better than PGR3 did..and the water is better than waverace… Fantastic how you get 1000 GS now whether you spend $5 or $60. Yes, I’m being sarcastic. It devalues gamerscore out of any value it had left, and instead ensures small games are wildly successful due to people just wanting to pad up on the cheap. I imagine the major publishers aren’t super happy about it either, when a $50 million budget game is valued the same as an iOS port done by 2 people. Never really understood the fascination with gamer score. I play a game to have fun, not for a number next to my name that acts as some form of bragging rights. But to each their own. If it offered no gamerscore, or ten million, my thoughts on the game would be the same. Some games I would have never experienced everything if it didn’t have a certain achievement or trophy. I would have still had fun without going for that achievement or trophy but I did gain new experiences by playing a different way due to going for them which offered me more enjoyment. Same here. I have no idea what my gamerscore is, and I don’t really care. As an Achievement hunter myself I will agree that it greatly offsets the balance of gamerscore, but I also am not going to complain too much about it. I do foresee more than 1000GS for the AAA titles and other higher priced games. Gamerscore is completely meaningless/worthless in any case. Yeah yeah I’ve heard it before a million times…. don’t waste your breath…. or fingers in this case. Does this remind anyone of Powerboat racing (I think it was vr software of something)? Might have been pc only. Recently got this for free on my phone. More than willing to pay the £4 here to support the devs – Great little racer, really good fun. this game looks fun, I enjoy hydrothunder and I have only looked at about 2 min of this game but I think it looks fun. I will definitly look further into it. I’ve played a lot of this game on my Fire TV, it’s a decent racer but if only it had an online multiplayer mode it would be so much more fun. 3 to 4 hrs and you’ll have had enough. Why no australia ?. prob have to wait a month…. been happening alot. For 5 bucks?….Love it…would have paid 20 if it had MP, thats how much I like it…Been looking for a game like waverace…this will do me… Microsoft should hire these guys to finally give Hydrothunder Hurricane the sequel it deserves! this is nice and all but you can tell the budget was way smaller and all… plt microsoft! HydroThunder is amazing! GIVE US MOOAAR! in the meantime I’ll play this I guess… but it is not yet on the german marketplace… so ya. Really fun game. Can we get Hydro Thunder Hurricane on Xbox One next please. We could use more arcadey racing games. The Latest Recently on Major Nelson. Reviewed by A.J. Maciejewski playing an Xbox One on January 30, 2015. Riptide GP2 is also available for PlayStation 4. Water-based racing games are becoming an increasingly underrepresented genre so thank Poseidon that Riptide GP2 is here. As you speed through each race on your rocket-powered hydro jet, you'll find it difficult not to enjoy every moment. Now that's what I call off-road racing! After being educated via a brief tutorial, you'll be pleasantly surprised how simple the controls are. Besides braking, accelerating, boosting, and steering, you can also perform stunts. These are executed by tilting both sticks in various directions. After landing a successful stunt, your boost meter fills. You've probably played games with very similar controls countless times before but Riptide GP2's controls are incredibly intuitive. Every command is responsive and immediately satisfying. In other words, this racer is less about gimmicks and more about straight-up fun without the need for superficial mechanics. Although Riptide GP2 may not appear truly next-gen, its graphics are easy on the eyes. Water looks realistic enough as it gently rocks your stationary watercraft before the race starts and glistens in the sun as you speed through. Your racer is animated seamlessly since he or she tilts their entire body as you steer and performs some remarkable stunts whenever you command them to do so. As you race, you'll feel an intense sense of speed as a result of effects such as streamlines and water splashing on the screen. The included thirteen tracks consist of a variety of innovative futuristic environments. You'll find yourself racing in suspended waterways, waterfalls on the sides of skyscrapers, frozen caves complete with icebergs, and even late at night around a CIA-esque complex. Each track is cleverly rendered in a way that will make you feel like a true outlaw racer. The audio effects add even more satisfaction to the overall experience. Your engine's revving is loud enough to distinguish yet is never overbearing. Subtleties such as hearing a splash as your craft lands from being airborne and how certain track installations make noise as you pass underneath help to suck you in to the race even further. Although the effects are spot-on, the music leaves a lot to be desired. It's not bad, but to be blunt, it just sounds like generic electronica. There's no musical piece that will get your adrenaline going, so it's safe to say that the soundtrack simply doesn't live up to the gameplay. Got some extra money? Why not upgrade your hydro jet? Riptide GP2 contains three modes in the form of career mode, VR challenge, and local multiplayer. In VR challenge, you race on a track as your ghost is recorded and you can invite your friends to do the same and race each other's ghosts. The more friends that you beat, the more heavily rewarded you are. Even though this is the only form of online multiplayer, it's pretty intriguing as it's a new way to challenge your friends without actually racing them. Local multiplayer can be played by up to six people at once with the screen being divided appropriately. It's a nice addition for players who have multiple controllers and friends who also enjoy racing. Let's talk about the meat of the game; career mode. As you race through various events such as normal races, time trials, elimination races, and stunt challenges, you'll be rewarded stars, cash, and experience according to how well you did. The stars are used to unlock further events as you would expect. Cash is used to purchase and upgrade hydro jets while experience is used to unlock more stunts and improvements for your character. Further unlocked stunts may be trickier to pull off but will provide you with more boost power for doing so. Considering the massive array of stunts and how satisfying they are to execute, you'll want to keep unlocking more as you progress. Events can get very challenging, but you can always grind to earn more cash and level up in order to overcome anything. You may have a lot of fun with Riptide GP2, but it does have its flaws. You'll find that your level will increase much more frequently than you can afford to unlock and upgrade vehicles since that requires a decent chunk of change. This, along with the fact that you can use any hydro jet in any race, makes the progression system quite unbalanced. If you grind to afford an expensive craft then you'll quickly find out how much easier the events are. Also, you can go back and beat previous events with no problem whatsoever after you advance far enough. To remedy these issues, the developers should have limited events to certain vehicles, had vehicles unlock automatically upon levelling up, and made money just used for upgrades. Sometimes placing limitations on players is a good thing as it creates a more balanced sense of progression. The only other complaint is that you can only crash by unsuccessfully performing stunts. If you slam into a wall as hard as you can, you'll keep racing as if nothing happened. This is annoying because it allows you to be less careful and it would have added to the challenge if you were forced to drive more carefully. There's nothing like showing off by doing some flashy stunts. Riptide GP2 is a fantastic watercraft racer with simplistic controls and instantly satisfying gameplay. It may have its flaws, but there's no denying the amount of fun you'll have boosting past your opponents on your rocket-powered hydro jet. + Solid gameplay with tight controls, satisfying stunt system, and potent sense of speed + Lengthy and challenging career mode + Inventive variety of great looking tracks - Money and experience systems make for unbalanced character progression - Generic music isn't fitting for intense racing - The only way to crash is by performing stunts. More great content. If you enjoyed this review then share it on Reddit. Riptide GP2 review (Xbox One) Riptide GP2 review (Xbox One) Riptide GP2 was developed and published by Vector Unit. It was released on Xbox One on January 23, 2015 for $4.99. A code was provided by the publisher for review purposes. In Riptide GP2 you take control of a hydro jet and take to the waterways to put your racing skills to the test against AI, your local friends and/or the Xbox leaderboards. The better your racing skills are, the faster you will rake in the winnings and progress to the next set of challenges. You can use the money you’ve won to upgrade your current hydro jet or purchase one of 10 others that unlock as you progress higher in rank. With over 25 stunts at your disposal, and with doing stunts being the main way to increase your boost, finding the right line to hit a jump at max speed will take some time and patience but will ultimately help you win events. Even before playing Riptide GP2 , the mere mention of its developer, Vector Unit, immediately made me think of Hydro Thunder Hurricane (HTH), an Xbox Live Arcade game released in 2010. Hydro Thunder Hurricane is also made by Vector Unit. Unfortunately, Riptide GP2 is so similar to HTH that it feels more like an updated port or unreleased HTH downloadable content than a complete game in itself, which is what it should feel like. Here's what I liked: Pick-up-and-play — There are buttons for the gas, the brake, the boost and the left stick steers. That's it. There are no other controls to be concerned with, and that works just fine for quick play sessions. Numerous jet bike upgrades and biker customizations — As you earn money from events, there are many options to choose from in upgrading your jet bike. Handling and acceleration are the ones that I recommend you focus on. The sharper you can make the turns and the faster you can accelerate out of them and off the starting line, the better your chances of getting out in front and staying there all the way to the finish line. Price — At $4.99 at release, achievement hunters will not be spending a lot to get their quick 1000 gamer points out of Riptide GP2 . This starting price point may also make the game easily marked down during promotional Xbox events to an even lower price, and possibly makes it a prime candidate to be a future Game with Gold free title. Here's what I didn’t like: Tough AI early on — The AI so brutally outmatches players in the stock hyrdro jets that I was barely able to stay in the top five before my first hydro jet upgrade. It took about three races, finishing in second each time, to amass enough money to get my first upgrade to my jet bike. As mentioned above, focusing handling and acceleration is my recommendation for compensating for this issue. Easy AI later — After applying the first acceleration and handling upgrades I couldn't lose a race. At approximately my fourth race I had an upgraded bike and as long I was able to hit the jumps and keep my boost up I would be in first place almost every event. Very repetitive gameplay — There are only three types of events in career mode, and there is very little challenge to Riptide GP2 after the first couple upgrades. Waiting for the race to start, pushing down the gas button, turning when needed and crossing the finish line is about all there is to it. "Wash, rinse and repeat" as the old adage goes, and what you have is Riptide GP2 for the Xbox One. Lack of online multiplayer — There is no way to race your Xbox friends online in Riptide GP2 . There is a VR challenge mode where you can race ghosts of your friends, but this feature is far from the experience of true multiplayer. If any updates are planned for Riptide GP2 online multi-player racing should be #1 on that list. A mobile game port Riptide GP2 was first released on iTunes in December of 2013 and then released on the Android marketplace in October of 2014. Other than the graphics, with Riptide GP2 on the Xbox One running at 1080p 60fps, there is very little difference between the version that was just released in 2015 and those previous versions. Vector Unit does appear to have added some value to Riptide GP2 on the Xbox One by adding local six-player split-screen racing to the Xbox One version. Unfortunately, again, I do not know many gamers that have six controllers or a big enough TV to make it enjoyable to play six across. I have a 60" TV and found it difficult to have more than two racers on the screen at the same time. If you were hoping that Riptide GP2 would be the Hydro Thunder Hurricane of the Xbox One, then you are going to be sorely disappointed. While achievement hunters will want to pick this game up for its easy but time-consuming, 1000 Gamerscore. If you're really itching to race a hydro jet then I would suggest getting Riptide GP2 on a mobile device where it is only $.99. Or just, you know, going back and playing HTH on your 360. The Windows 8.1 version runs and plays just like the Android version, which I had first. Overall it is just a fantastic update to the original Riptide GP. The only disappointment with the Windows version is the lack of online head to head play with other players on the network (Android version uses other players on Google+). So I would like to give it 5, but without the online challenge I'm torn between giving a 4 or 5. Get's boring without online challenge after you reach level 19. Vector Unit & Microsoft, please add this game to Xbox Live so we can have some online head to head play. This will get more people to buy this game also! 58 out of 71 people found this helpful. This is a great game and a fun way to kill some time. Some things though I wish they would add is if they could add a few fore jet skis and have a bit more customization if they did that then this game would be the best game ever! 3 out of 3 people found this helpful. great game.
