The story on Friday afternoon went something like this… An anonymous source told Rooster Teeth that Microsoft was in talks to purchase the property from Konami. Rooster Teeth’s source said that the game is about 80 percent complete and that Microsoft was ready to spend “billions” to purchase the property before E3. This follows tons of drama with the property. Silent Hills was initially unveiled in what might be one of the best game marketing campaigns of all time – the playable teaser, P.T.. The tiny game combined some nearly photorealistic graphics and a lot of very unnerving content to create something that really hooked into fans hopes from the long troubled series. Then, rumors started to fly around that something was going on with game producer Hideo Kojima and publisher Konami. While Kojima is still on to finish up Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain for its September 1 release, it seems that his relationship with Konami will end there. P.T. was recently pulled from the PlayStation store where it debuted last year, and is no longer available to be downloaded or re-downloaded. The rumor had Konami taking the demo down as a “show of good faith to Microsoft.” Owners of consoles containing P.T. started putting their systems on eBay at inflated prices, hoping to make a buck off the game’s new-found digital scarcity, but those were taken down shortly after as well, as eBay doesn’t allow electronics with user account information still present to be sold. As IGN notes, there were some problems with the rumor right from the beginning. Just about every indication with the game was that it was very early on. Star Norman Reedus said that only some basic motion capture had been done, and that the “heavy” mo-cap hadn’t been shot yet. Someone at Konami remembers the Silent Hill franchise, at least enough to give Microsoft the “okay” to release the Xbox 360 version of Silent Hill: Downpour on Xbox One via the Xbox One’s backward compatibility feature. I’d kill for Downpour on PC. The early screenshots were gorgeous, then it got uglier and uglier. My main gripe was the enemy design, and lack of enemy diversity. I remember really enjoying the ending though. Monster design also got less detailed and plain weird if remember correctly. Since the game made on U3, it would shine on PC. I can’t say I’ve seen a bad behaving U3 game on PC. “Silent Hill HD Collection” If I remember correctly, the 360 version was fine. The PS3 had issues with the fog, and was not optimized. PS3 version was the only one that was patched. For fans they’re a major disappointment, to non-fans neither version is unplayable. Until Konami re-releases the originals, these are fine recommendations to just for the sake of accessibility to newcomers. Those newcomers won’t be fans, if they play this bugfest ‘HD remaster’ of the early build of the game, though. And their first experience will be very toxic, therefore they will be confused about why the series held in such high regard. Even Konami had to warn people after complaints. One Japanese saying goes: You don’t have to kill someone a second time. Second killing was our perception and memories of Silent Hill. It’s a bad idea to repeat that and kill something before its born, for newcomers. When its come to accessibility, PC community made a lot of improvements for the classic games for modern PC’s. They have even kinda fixed the fog and FMV’s in Silent Hill 2 along with fov, aspect ratio etc. They made the real remasters and some people still working on them. They work on old laptops, toasters and potatoes. It’s the most close thing to real experience as it is the only sensible way to go. Instead of wishing to re-release of shit, we could point out a more sensible way for newcomers who also might get disappointed. Fans or newcomers no one deserves this. Even though it is a horrible remaster, I would still love to see it come to XB1 backwards compatibility. I am not going to keep all of my last generation consoles around forever, and this would at least give people an opportunity to relive those masterpieces. Unfortunately there aren’t many other options besides emulation. As SH fans, we have been through the ringer with Konami… And the least they could do is authorize the SH Collection & Homecoming to the backwards compat program. Well, it has been six months… but you still don’t need any last gen console or XB1 backward compatibility to relieve those masterpieces. I personally don’t bother with emulations also, since they have their own problems. ‘ThirteenAG’s Widescreen Pack’ is my best way to go. Btw, during this six months, they have shortened the loading times between rooms and made full controller support for SH2, like PS2 and XBOX. I can’t ask a better way to re-play at the moment. Gosh, that sounds positively amazing, but unfortunately I have zero access to the PC iterations of any Silent Hill games. I just want to play SH2, SH3, and SH4 effortlessly but it seems I always hit a snag! I also really want to get back into speedrunning, which was honestly my favorite thing to do in these classics. When I put my disc in the xbox the other day, the last thing I expected was to be able to play it. I was about to sell it to because it seems no other 360 game I own is wanted for release. When I saw this, I screamed finally and began the download. I tried to stream the game but twitch thinks it is a beta and wont let me stream it. I want to stream for my next playthrough of it and I am tired of waiting. I just want to say thank you konami and microsoft for allowing me to play this again. I had not played any Silent hill games since SH2 on PS1. I do not know why, the series appeals 2 me by gameplay & genre, but I just never got 2 it. Anyhow, year & a ½ ago, during a Game Stop scavenging trip I noticed a used copy of SH: Downpour, after wondering how I missed playing SH games in yrs, & reading a few pos. & neg. reviews, I got it, & never regretted it. Downpour has a great suspenseful, non-linear story with alot of unanswered questions lingering throughout the game, more than decent gameplay mech., good side missions in a semi free roam enviroment, & moments that genuinely startled me,(rare, being that I am a classic stoic Russian that's seen it all). There are 4 endings, + secret 1's, 7 in total. Ranging from emotional 2 Kojimadiculous. Downpour stoked my 😍 4 the SH franchise. I bought the preceding titles for var. platforms, was devestated when I read that SH 7 was cancled, and saw the films 4 easter egg knowledge, & played a 2nd time. As a long time Silent Hill fan, I wanted to try this one out, since the new team of creators stated heavier psychological story. The graphics are decent, with some emphasis on water, obviously, but the surprising part comes from frame rate issues and glitchy camera work. The designers said they were going to create a patch for the Xbox version, but as of this review, almost 9 months after release, there hasn't been one. It gets better as you progress, so if you can manage, just hang on. Another poor design is the save system. The first Silent Hill game to be completely reliant on auto saves (there is NO manual save option), it will fail you many times after completing large amounts of game play. Also gets better as the game progresses, but my advice is to check the load scr eens to make sure your progress is mostly up to date. Something positive to speak of, the story is mostly engaging, especially if you are a fan of older Silent Hill story lines, which are full of various innuendos and analogies. The subtle clues are the best part to me, as they help with the atmosphere and mystery of the character. As far as the music goes, I am particularly fond of most Silent Hill music to date. Own the first four soundtracks, listened to them many times, they are better than any mainstream band album to me. This game almost utterly fails in this aspect. With no real musical theme to instill in your memory, the game is mostly comprised of background noises compiled with eerie sounds and scores. A mood setter, no doubt, for those new to Silent Hill, but it has you experiencing barely the peak of the emotions music is capable of influencing. I read they hired the composer from the t.v. show Dexter to do the score, and if you've ever seen a sitcom or drama, you'd know this is the exact result you'd get. Short term emotions versus long term emotions. Game play is normal for Silent Hill, some face to face metal rod beating action. There are few more elegant things the creators could have worked out, but you'll get through it. The puzzles have returned, and like in Silent Hill 3, there is even a separate difficulty option for them! Exciting, at least if you like puzzles. Thanks for reading my review, think I covered everything I can remember in non-spoiler fashion. I'd give it a 3 for non-Silent Hill fans, not a whole lot new you might like.
