Sennheiser is as well known for their music-oriented headsets as they are for their gaming lineup. While they may not share the same limelight as say TurtleBeach or Razer, the company has been consistently making quality products that not only offer great performance but are built to last. Ask any serious gamer and you will find Sennheiser atop of many recommendation lists. Last year, Sennheiser released the G4ME Zero and G4ME One headsets, two new premium models designed to provide high-quality sound, comfort and features. In this review, we are looking at the slightly less premium of the two, the G4ME One. The G4ME One shares the same base design of other Sennheiser headsets, however it's gloss-white plastic and metallic elements almost doesn't pass it off as a gaming headset. Where's the brooding black? The matte finish? On a serious note though, the G4ME One is a pleasant looking device, despite the odd slots and red underlinings that somewhat mar the overall look. The headset is encased in a plastic body, which doesn't bode well for the durablity of the device. It does feel sturdy in the hand, and could take a few beatings if it came to that, however it is difficult to determine how it will weather with wear and tear over time. That said, I never felt I had to handle it with care, and I have indeed dropped it a few times (sorry, PR!) without any damage. Sennheiser has worked closely on the design to ensure the sound travels directly to our ears. As a result, you have a circumaural earcup design that sits around your ear, rather than resting on them. This naturally gives them a large shape, though Sennheiser has smartly made them oval-shaped so they are not as chunky as other similar headsets. The G4ME One features an open acoustic design, which while reducing distortion and improving the sound quality somewhat, is also prone to sound leakage and does a fairly poor job at eliminating outside noise. This limits the headset from being a travel accessory (forget about using it with the PS Vita on a train) or even an ideal solution for LAN parties. Elsewhere, Sennheiser has kept the design as simplistic and accessible as possible. Instead of inline controls, you have a large volume control dial on the right earcup, which makes adjusting the volume easier than fumbling around for the inline controls. This will be especially useful for those who prefer to game in the dark. There is also a very serious looking mic, which activates and deactives the microphone when it's folded down and up, respectively. Again, Sennheiser claims it's the best in the class, and I have little reasons to question that. The mic was crystal clear during in-game chatting or Skype calls, and managed impressive noise-cancellation while using it in a noisy envrioment. Comfort in a headset is of paramount importance. The headet could have the best features, the best surround sound, and the best sound quality, but if it doesn't offer a comfortable experience, it immediately negates any other benefits it may have. Sennheiser has worked extensively to make the G4ME One as comfortable as possible, and it shows. At 312 grams, the headset is considerably light, and the plush velvet ear pads feel nice and soft, and sit gently on your ears. The headband too provides ample weight distribution, and snugly fits over your head. Perhaps, maybe a bit too snug. While the headset feels great at first, the clamp force immediately starts to bore into the sides of your cheeks, causing, at times, some uncomfortable pain. I would find myself constantly adjusting and readjusting the headset for comfort, but no matter what confirguration of length and placement I tried, I could not seat it comfortably on my head. Many times in the process of reviewing the headset, I had simply given up and went back to my regular TurtleBeach. Having to constantly readjust to ease the pain was simply too distracting to immerse myself in a game or a movie for a long period of time. Performance. It’s a Sennheiser product, so our expectations start from the top. The G4ME One easily exceeds that, though. Unlike other gaming headsets, which are usually tweaked to produce punchy sound effects and booming bass, the G4ME One has a pleasantly balanced soundstage. This not only produces a more natural, organic sound, but is also a lot more closer to what the content creators intended. My testing suite included the likes of Call of Duty: Ghosts, Need for Speed Most Wanted, Thief, and TitanFall. It’s a varied mix of sound styles, which the G4ME One had absolutely no problem rendering. Be it the explosive action of TitanFall, or the intimidating grumble of sports car engines in Need for Speed, or even the subtle environmental cues of Thief, the G4ME One remained precise and detailed. Despite the lack of any surround sound equipment, the G4ME One provided exceptional sound positioning. From the approaching footsteps of enemies, to the distant cracking of AK47s, everything was wonderfully accurate. In one instance during a match in Ghosts, I was easily able to pick up two enemies approaching from the either side of the map, giving me ample time to find a hiding spot and headshot them in a surprise attack. The G4ME One is also suitable for music playback. Where other gaming headset would usually miss the mark by being too bassy or simply be unable to render minute audio details, the balanced soundstage of the G4ME One caters well to all genres. In my extensive testing with Hindi music ranging from Punjabi, to Bhangra, to Sufi, and Pop, the headset remained detailed and produced a warm and fullfiling sound that made listening to music a pleasure. Similar to the stereo Sennheiser PC 350 SE in appearance, the PC 363D is a primarily plastic headset, with gun-grey aluminium on the side of each cup. It’s not pretty and the plastic does feel a tad less premium than it should considering the £200 price tag. However, it is built like the proverbial brick commode. The traditionally vulnerable microphone, in particular, is extremely solid. The cable is plenty long and covered in tough weaved fabric to prevent tangles. There’s no cable management system, though, other than a length of velcro. So it’s not exactly stylish, but there’s less pressure on headsets to look good, what is important is comfort for long hours of gaming. And in this area the Sennheiser PC 363D excels. It flexes enough to be placed into a comfortable position regardless of head shape and size. The generous ear-pads are covered in velvety-soft fabric and grip firmly, but without too much pressure, while the head band is soft and unobtrusive. At 249g (for the headset only) it’s light enough to use for extended periods without any discomfort. An integrated volume control on the right cup means you always know where it is and don’t have to hunt the length of the cord to adjust the volume. It’s a very clever feature and, as with the best designs, we got used to it instantly and would use it in the middle of intense gaming without having to think. Slots are cut into the metal ear-cups. This allows ears to breath and we found that even after several hours of gaming our ears were comfortable and cool. Getting hot and sweaty is issue we find with most headsets but not for this Sennheiser. One issue the open cup design does have is that it lets external sound in, while also leaking noise. If you game in a room with other people watching TV or listening to music you’ll likely be better off with a closed cup headset, but if not the extra comfort is well worth it. Sennheiser PC 363D: Sound Quality. Let’s start by saying that the sound quality on the PC 363D headset is excellent. Unlike on the Razer Tiamat headset the 7.1 surround sound is virtual, so if you have your own 7.1 sound card you might not get the most out of it. If you don’t, though, the Sennheiser comes with a 3D G4ME1 USB sound card, and connects to it with 3.5mm audio and mic inputs. If anything sometimes the cacophony of battle can be disorienting in its immersiveness, but it’s not something you should ever complain about, it just goes to show what a good job the Sennheiser PC 363D does at making you feel right in the middle of it all. While the PC363 can’t compete with a pair of top-notch cans for listening to music and film they actually do a good job on both. Balance is good and treble smooth – you’ll certainly enjoy watching movie in 7.1 surround. Sennheiser PC 363D: Microphone Quality. So the audio is great but how does mic fare? Happily that’s also top-notch. As we already mentioned it’s very solid, with a thick, flexible boom ending in a chunky noise-cancelling microphone. It can’t be detached, which is a bit of a shame, but it does automatically mute when pushed upwards and out-of-the-way. Voice clarity is clear and precise, and external ambient noise doesn’t seem to affect it unless it’s uncomfortably loud. This means your online teammates won’t have to listen to everything else going on in your house. £200 is a lot to spend on a headset but the Sennheiser PC 363D is one of the best on the market.
