Rocksmith 2014 PS4/Xbox One Review. The self-proclaimed fastest way to learn the guitar has slid knee-first onto the current-gen stage, and although it doesn’t bring much in the way of new features, its resolution bump and support for existing DLC libraries facilitates a smooth transition for existing players looking to shift their interactive guitar practice sessions onto shiny new hardware. Unfortunately some slight audio latency issues inherent to the digital-only design of current-gen consoles means that Rocksmith 2014 for PS4 and Xbox One is slightly inferior overall to its last-gen and PC counterparts, but not by much. When I reviewed Rocksmith 2014 a year ago, I was enamoured with its expertly curated track list, incredibly useful Riff Repeater tool, expanded Guitarcade games and self-indulgent Session mode. Nothing has changed; Rocksmith 2014 is still a really fun way to practice the guitar and its colourful note highways are certainly clearer running at 1080p - even if it doesn't make an appreciable difference to the gameplay. The 1080p visuals look sharp, but don't affect the experience much. A year on the game also benefits from the hundreds of songs that have been released regularly as DLC since the game’s last-gen launch (at the time of review, these songs were still in the process of being populated across to the Xbox One's Marketplace and the PS4's PSN Store in dribs and drabs, but Ubisoft claims it will all be available soon). Happily there’s no charge to import any existing DLC you might already own for the game, so long as you’re sticking within the one console family - either moving from PS3 to PS4 or Xbox 360 to Xbox One - with the only downside being that your progress in each individual song will not transfer along with it. Both the PS4 and Xbox One versions of the game have their own respective exclusive features. On the Sony side, Rocksmith 2014 supports Remote Play via the PS Vita. This is hardly a useful feature - since you can’t plug your Real Tone cable into the Vita, all you can do is basically watch Master Mode versions of each song in the game and jam along either unplugged or connected to a guitar amp. Because you’re not actually interacting with the game, you don’t get scored and your in-game progress is unaffected, which largely defeats the purpose. Remote Play might be useful for some who have to surrender their television to another family member during practice time, but I found it to be a fairly superfluous feature. A whopping 12 Hendrix songs are set to arrive as DLC in December. 'Scuse me while I kiss my spare time goodbye. Xbox One owners get a slightly more valuable addition: support for voice commands in the game’s menus. This is certainly a welcome feature in theory - having to constantly pick up and put down the controller in order to navigate menus between songs has always been a little cumbersome. Using the Kinect’s microphone, you should be able to keep your fingers on the fretboard at all times. However, my experience with voice recognition on the Xbox One has always been a little hit and miss, and again with Rocksmith 2014 I found I had to repeat myself a little bit too much to make it worth my while. I suspect it might work more consistently for North American players, but if you’re an Australian like me or have an accent that’s anything other than ‘American’, your results may vary. One problem that absolutely will be universal for anyone who picks up Rocksmith 2014 on PS4 or Xbox One, is the process of minimising audio latency during the initial setup. With the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions, the optimal setup to eradicate the delay between what you played and what you heard was to run a digital video signal into your TV and an analogue audio signal into a separate hi-fi or headphone amp. Due to the fact that neither the PS4 nor Xbox One consoles feature analogue audio output, your best bet now is to run audio into an external device via an optical cable. Setting high scores in the Guitarcade is slightly trickier with the added audio latency. Unfortunately, there is still some audio lag present in this instance. To test it, I tried playing Foo Fighters’ Everlong on the PS3 using analogue audio outputs, and then again on the PS4 and Xbox One using the mandatory digital optical outputs. There was a small but still noteworthy reduction in my accuracy; on the PS3 I’m able to consistently achieve 99% of the notes (or 100% on a good day); on the PS4 and Xbox One I’ve only been able to scrape my way to 96% due to the latency and the occasional missed notes that result. Attempting a more complicated, solo-heavy song, such as Joe Satriani’s Satch Boogie or Pantera’s Cowboys From Hell, only makes the latency issues all the more pronounced. Theoretically the latency could be reduced even further using a third party optical to RCA converter box, but this seems like a lot to ask of the consumer. Essentially, you need to go into Rocksmith 2014 on PS4 and Xbox One knowing that in order to 100% a song you’re going to have to contend not just with your own limitations as a player, but also an aural feedback loop that’s forever slightly behind the beat - and that’s a bit of a shame. (Note: if you don’t have an external amp and can only run the audio into your TV via HDMI, you will find an experience that’s virtually unplayable). Rocksmith 2014 for PS4 and Xbox One adds little in the way of useful new features, but the core game remains one of the most entertaining and addictive ways to practice or learn the guitar. The fact that the audio latency can be minimised but not completely eradicated is a shame and makes the current-gen game the least appealing version over all, but if you’ve already pawned your PS3 or 360 then the fastest way to learn the guitar is still a fun journey - even if it is now a half-step behind. Rocksmith 2014 for PS4/Xbox One is not the definitive version, but still a highly enjoyable guitar game all the same. Still one of the most fun ways to practice or learn the guitar The guitar tones are great Previously owned DLC transfers across from last gen at no extra cost Audio latency is hard to fully minimise, which hampers the experience a touch Platform specific features underwhelm. © 1996-2018 Ziff Davis, LLC. Rocksmith 2014 Xbox One Impressions. Rocksmith 2014 on Xbox One Still Rocks. We're huge fans of Ubisoft's Rocksmith games as they really are a great way to learn to play real guitar. After two wildly successful releases on Xbox 360, the company has brought Rocksmith 2014 to the current-gen on Xbox One. We take a look at this new release right here. What Is Rocksmith? For starters, Rocksmith is a guitar teaching tool (which means that, yes, you need a real electric guitar to play it - no toy guitars here) that features a number of lessons that will teach you everything from the true basics (there's even tutorials on putting new strings on your guitar) all the way up to the more complicated and intimidating things about playing guitar. By using tools such as dynamic difficulty that slowly adds more notes to the song as you play properly, a riff repeater that lets you practice song parts over and over, and arcade-style minigames that help you learn and remember chords and scales through repetition, Rocksmith really is a fun and effective way to learn to play guitar. Plus, it has a huge list of songs available, and I'm a firm believer that you learn to play a lot more quickly by playing songs you actually like. It also has a neat feature that lets you create your own guitar tones and just noodle around, which is a fun way to apply what you've been learning. For more specific details on how Rocksmith works, please see my reviews of the original Rocksmith as well as Rocksmith 2014 for Xbox 360. Rocksmith 2014 Xbox One Overview. Rocksmith 2014 on Xbox One isn't a new entry in the series, just a port of Rocksmith 2014 that was released for PS3 and X360 in 2013. This is more of a "If you missed it the first time around" type of release more than something series fans necessarily need to buy. It does feature 1080p visuals, but beyond that you're probably just fine sticking with your last-gen versions for now. Unfortunately, due to the digital nature of the Xbox One, this version adds some slight latency issues not present on the 360, which is another reason to stick to last-gen. We'll talk about that more below. Rocksmith 2014 has had a full year's worth of new songs released as DLC since it was released on Xbox 360, and all of those songs, plus most of the on-disc songs from the original Rocksmith (available via an Import Pack), are available for the Xbox One version. If you already bought them on 360, you'll be able to re-download them on XONE for free. So you've got 55 on-disc songs in Rocksmith 2014, plus hundreds more as DLC. Not a bad way to launch a music game, right? While the DLC transfers from 360 to XONE, your save files do not. So if you have already played a bunch on the 360 and want to shift to the XONE version, your progress won't carry over and you'll have to do everything again. Something else worth mentioning is that if you do want to move up from last gen, you won't have to buy the expensive set with the Real Tone Cable again. If you already have the cable from the 360 (or any other) version, that same cable will work on XONE since it is just a normal USB connection. If you don't have a cable already, you can buy a set that comes with the game plus a cable. Or you could buy the cable by itself (for around $30), and buy the game separately via digital download (an Xbox One retail version without the cable isn't available at the moment). You have to have the cable to play the game, though, so keep that in mind before you go digital. Rocksmith 2014 Xbox One Impressions. Now onto some specifics about the Xbox One version. The upgrade to 1080p visuals is certainly appreciated, but the increased fidelity doesn't really change the way the game plays. The note highway has always been bright and clear and easy to read, so even though it is sharper here, it doesn't really make a meaningful difference. Something nice about the Xbox One version is that you can use Kinect voice commands to navigate the menus, which makes using the game a lot easier since you don't have to constantly pick up a controller to do everything. This feature was also available on the 360 version, but works better on the ONE. I might of had to repeat myself a time or two, but it was still easier than having to pick up a controller. Another fancy "next-gen" feature of the Xbox One (and PS4) poses more of a problem, however, and that is the lack of analog audio output. This is problematic because digital audio on Xbox One causes slight lag, which makes playing accurately difficult. In fact, the game is absolutely unplayable if you just hook the HDMI cable to your TV, as the audio lags a good 1.5+ seconds or so behind what you're playing. Ubisoft recommends you use an optical audio cable from the XONE to your sound system or headphones, and while this greatly reduces the lag, it doesn't get rid of it completely. It cuts it down to a couple tenths of a second, which isn't bad and you can get used to it, but it isn't optimal. True guitar beginners might not even notice it, but if you're used to playing through an amplifier that responds immediately to what you play, any sort of delay can throw you off. I want to make it clear that the lag isn't awful or anything, and I spent several hours with the game and had fun, but it isn't perfect. Just for reference, on the 360 you could have an HDMI cable and standard red/white audio cables connected at the same time, so you'd run the HDMI to your TV and the audio cable to your sound system or headphones, which eliminated any sort of lag almost entirely. Bottom Line. All in all, Rocksmith 2014 for Xbox One is a solid release, but it isn't the definitive version of the game. It really is just another option to choose from depending on what systems you have. Don't consider it an upgrade if you already have the Xbox 360 version. It really is just the same game again on a new platform. With that said, there is slightly more audio lag on the Xbox One version, which means I'd rank it below the 360 version. It certainly isn't a bad choice if you only have an Xbox One and want to learn to play guitar, but if you have other systems available (such as an Xbox 360 or PS3) I'd recommend getting that version of Rocksmith 2014 instead. Any new DLC released will work for all versions of the game, so you aren't missing out on anything by sticking to last-gen. Disclosure: A review copy was provided by the publisher. RS2014 came out on November 4 in North America, November 6 in the Europe and Australia, and November 7 in the UK. The physical edition comes with the required Rocksmith Real Tone Cable for a suggested retail price of $79.99 USD/Ј65,00/90,00€. (Keep in mind that is a suggested price; final retail price at your local store may differ, as Ubisoft suggests but does not dictate prices). In the UK, RS2014 is an Amazon UK exclusive. The game will also be released as a digital download, without the Real Tone Cable, for a suggested price of $59.99 USD. (Again, check in your local areas to find out your local prices for the digital edition.) Please note the Real Tone Cable is required to play Rocksmith 2014, so if you don’t already have one, you will need to purchase one separately. More on that in a bit. Actual retail prices are set by the retailers. Ubisoft suggests but does not dictate prices -- MSRP stands for Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price. It must remain a suggestion, by law, or it would be considered price fixing. So when you see varying prices at various online retailers, whether they be physical or digital products, ask the retailer for more information about the price. Yes. You will be able redownload any DLC you have purchased within the same console family for no additional charge. That is, any DLC you have purchased on Xbox 360 can be downloaded on Xbox One, and any PlayStation 3 DLC can be downloaded on PlayStation 4. If you own a lot of DLC, this may be time consuming on a track-by-track basis, but you only have to download each track once. Yes. You’ll be able to re-download them as if they were any other DLC in your collection. The import tool is available on Xbox worldwide and on PlayStation -- more information a little later in this document. You must own the original game on the previous generation of consoles in order to access it on the latest generation. See below for more information. No, sorry. You can only import DLC from within the same console “family.” Cross-platform DLC transfer is not possible, as different publishers run each of those digital stores. It's a little like buying a Coca-Cola at McDonald's, then asking Burger King to refill your cup. No, sorry – but the opposite is true. If you buy DLC on an Xbox 360, you can bring it forward to Xbox One; if you buy DLC on a PS3, you can also download it on PS4. So if you want to own the DLC on both platforms within a console family, you’ll want to buy it on the earlier console, then download it on the newer one. Buy on PS3, own it on PS3 and PS4. Buy on PS4, own it on PS4. Buy on Xbox 360, own it on Xbox 360 and Xbox One. Buy on Xbox One, own it on Xbox One. Yes. All of the DLC released for the original Rocksmith is compatible with Rocksmith 2014 and will be made available for purchase on both PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. If you’ve already bought it on your previous console, you can download it on your new console at no additional charge. All legacy DLC is available for sale and download worldwide. The DLC license permissions required for 360 content to be used on Xbox One took a while to work out, but they should now be in place for all Xbox One users. XBOX ONE: Yes, with a one or two exceptions (see below), though it's not completely implemented yet. You should be able to download some songs as singles on Xbox One that you originally bought as part of packs on 360. When the permissions are in place, here's what it should look like. 1. Select Games and Apps from your Xbox One dashboard. 2. Choose Rocksmith 2014 Remastered and press the Menu button (three horizontal lines) 3. Choose Manage Game. 4. Select Ready to Install from the left-hand menu. 5. You should see all the DLC you own, but is not installed. Choose Install All to add those songs to your Xbox One installation of Rocksmith. PS4: Yes. Due to the way Sony permissions work, the safest way to make sure everybody got the content they were promised was to associate the pack purchases with the individual songs. So any content you bought as a pack on PS3 will be available to you as singles on PS4. First, look for your songs in the Songs list. Anything you already own will have its price replaced with "Free" as shown: On the web, you can head to your Microsoft Account or Sony Entertainment Network account and poke through your purchase/transaction/download history there. If you want to look it up on your console, here's how: Our DLC is a little different from other games. Whereas other games might include extra maps or add-on story segments, there more than 400 compatible songs available for download for Rocksmith, each retailing for $2.99 (and of course, part of that goes to the artists). To bundle that all on a disc, you're looking at a price in excess of $1000. It makes sense for other games, but it's just not feasible in our situation. XBOX : All DLC is now in sync and available on both Xbox 360 and Xbox One. PLAYSTATION : All DLC is now in sync and available on both PS3 and PS4. In mid-December, we released 12 Jimi Hendrix songs as DLC for all six platforms. If you bought the PS4 or Xbox One editions of the game before February 2, you were able to download all that content for free. That offer has now expired, but the content is still available as paid DLC. More information is available here. Sorry, that content is not planned for import (or re-release). Those bundles were limited-time offers that packaged single songs together at a discount. While those bundles do not exist any more, you should be able to download that material as individual songs. If you aren't sure what you bought in those special packs, here are the track lists. Due to a licensing restriction, we're no longer able to offer this song as a single. It's part of the Rock Singles pack along with Sweet's "Ballroom Blitz" and Ram Jam's "Black Betty," so the only way to get this song is as part of that pack. No, sorry. You'll need to start that over, but hey -- your skills will totally transfer. Yes, as you cannot use Rocksmith 2014 Edition without the Real Tone Cable. The physical/retail edition of the game comes with one, and if you would like additional cables (for instance, for multiplayer mode), you can buy additional cables from participating retailers or directly from Ubisoft. Yes – the cable is universal and will work on any of the six supported platforms – PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PC, and Macintosh. If you already own a Real Tone Cable, you might want to get the digital download edition, which will be priced at $59.99 USD. Ubisoft sells them online via the Uplay Shop, and Amazon also carries the cable as its own item. Your local store might carry it too, or be able to order it for you; give them a call. Both new versions output graphics at 1080p, so the visuals will look nicer if you have a 1080p television set. Additionally, the PlayStation 4 version supports Remote Play via the PlayStation Vita, so you can practice the songs in another room even though you aren’t being tracked or scored. Here is a Vine of Remote Play in action. On the other side of the fence, Xbox One users with Kinect can navigate the game using voice commands, so you never have to put down the guitar. No, sorry -- we did look into this, but it just wasn't something we could pull off. But your DLC library will transfer over for no additional cost, so any investment in songs over the last year is safe. However, we are offering PS4 and Xbox One owners the upcoming Jimi Hendrix DLC for free for a limited time, so that might be of interest. It's totally your call, based on your personal needs and console setup at home. When we released Rocksmith 2014 in late 2013, many people were investing in their new consoles instead of buying software for their previous platform, so they skipped it. Now, we're extending RS2014 to those new platforms so those folks can get a chance to learn to play guitar too. As to whether or not it makes sense for you to get it if you already own RS2014 on another platform, it's like buying your favorite movie on DVD, then seeing it come out for Blu-Ray. If you're trying to get all your favorite films on the latest format, then it might be something you want. If your DVD is serving you well, then you would probably just watch that when you're in the mood. Similarly, if you are enjoying RS2014 on your current platform, we'll keep supporting it with fresh DLC. Whichever version fits your lifestyle is fine with us -- we're glad you're playing! Yes. The games are seen as different entities, with their own lists of Achievements and Trophies. In some modes, yes. You can broadcast your free-form jams in Session Mode out to the internets as often as you like, show off your skills by streaming Guitarcade games, and hold sonic clinics online in Tone Designer. If you want to stream Learn a Song, Multiplayer, or Score Attack gameplay, you won't be able to use the internal streaming functionality for that content, due to copyright laws (which include the right of broadcast). We never recommend using only an HDMI connector to play Rocksmith 2014. Instead, we suggest you send the audio signal to an external receiver, speakers, or headphones using a separate cable, and only use HDMI for the video signal. In order of preference, we’d recommend one of these options: It might, but we have a hunch it probably won't work well . Some people say they have no problem, but since there are so many HDTVs out there, all with different chips and designs and innards, there is no way for us to predict any individual user's setup. If HDMI audio works for you, cool! But we really, really do not recommend crossing your fingers and hoping you might be one of the very few people for whom HDMI audio through a TV works just fine. Generally you will want to get your console to output as pure and unaffected an audio signal as possible, so that means disabling surround in most cases. Here's exactly where to go to change these settings (and you can always change them back -- feel free to experiment, you won't break anything): On Xbox One, go to Settings and choose Display & Sound. Maybe and no, depending on your system, since the two consoles use different technology for their controllers. The Xbox One controller is wireless (2.4 GHz), but will use a USB micro cable for both data and power when connected. We were able to play with only a slim preceptible delay by plugging a pair of headphones into the Stereo Headset Adapter; connecting a USB micro cable to the controller seemed to shave a few more milliseconds off. If this seems like a good solution for your situation, give it a try -- you should be able to play and be detected/scored accurately, though you will probably perceive a short delay. Optical is still your best bet. The PS4 controller is wireless (Bluetooth), and only uses a USB micro cable for power, not data. Bluetooth is a little slower at delivering audio, and we saw and felt that in our tests. We could play it, but we wouldn't recommend it unless you have no other option, because the delay over Bluetooth is noticeable. The music has always had the lightest compression we could get away with -- that's too important to squash, so you'll get the same high quality you're used to on any of the existing platforms. However, you may detect some improvement in PS4/XB1 menu audio, venue reverbs, and Session Mode instruments, as the new systems let us get away with lighter compression in those areas. We will continue to support all the existing platforms, and fresh DLC will continue to flow for all platforms on a weekly basis. Nothing is being taken away or discontinued; we're just extending RS2014 to two new systems. Whenever you need help with a Ubisoft title, your first stop should always be the friendly folks at Ubisoft Support -- they really do exist to help solve problems. Seriously, try them first. That said, we also have dedicated threads for that for PS4 and Xbox One. Please keep these threads on topic and only use them to report bugs! And give us as much info as you can -- your area of the world (some problems are regional), what you were doing when things went wrong, and any other relevant info. We need details and lots of them! Rocksmith: 2016 Edition. Rocksmith: 2016 Edition is the third instalment to Ubisoft's game Rocksmith. It will be released on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Wii U, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC, and MAC in September 1st, 2016. It uses the same gameplay as the two first games, but now uses three players to learn the guitar and play songs featured in the setlist. Maybe I'll finally learn. Even though I am terrible at playing guitar, this game makes learning seem less trudging. I have attempted to learn in the past with no success. I'm hoping that with the help of Rocksmith I may finally be able to play an instrument that I have aspired to play my whole life. The only reason that I did not give the game a 5 star review is due to the lag. I was aware of the issue prior to buying the game, but i have to admit, it's abit distracting. 196 out of 208 people found this helpful. Plug your speakers or headphones directly into your controller's headset jack. LAG GONE. 45 out of 47 people found this helpful. Great Game to learn to play on a real guitar. The real deal better than Guitar Pro. I use rs to learn new songs all the time. Great pratice tool and learning tool. 9 out of 9 people found this helpful. Great teacher. Easy to learn with this. 38 out of 49 people found this helpful. Still input lag. Cannot play fast due to this. 137 out of 217 people found this helpful. My guitar teacher! After getting frustrated with trying to have people teach me and trying to teach myself, Rocksmith became my guitar teacher! Great lessons, fun arcade games, and a plethora of DLC from so many eras and genres! I hardly play anything else now! I've been playing for five years and just this year I've started getting paid gigs! I never could have imagined getting this far and I could never have done it without Rocksmith! Thank you, Ubisoft! (I highly recommend a hollowbody guitar to help with the lag. I have the Ibanez AF75.) 3 out of 3 people found this helpful. Ubisoft is a bit greedy. I owned this game on the Xbox 360. I had the hard copy and also bought the software version when it was on special. I have spent many many dollars on songs at $3 each. After upgrading to Xbox One I had to spend another $40 to buy the remastered edition because MS and Ubi decided to prevent users from installing the old version and getting the free upgrade. I contacted Ubi to request a code or discount, they offered me 20% off the $80 cost. Would have been more expensive than just getting it from the Xbox store. I feel that my loyal patronage has been unappreciated. I hate to support such practices, but I already have so much invested and don't want to keep the old console around for the one game. Please consider my experience before you spend your money. 6 out of 10 people found this helpful. Fun no matter your skill level. I have played guitar for years and have fun with this. My wife doesn't play at all and had a blast. Great game. Minus 1 star because of the crappy cable. One person found this helpful. Best way to learn if. If you have ever wanted to learn electric guitar and/or bass, Rocksmith can help. Lessons from how to hold a pick to pinch harmonics (squeals), a massive database of current and past popular songs for all kinds of music lovers, an arcade full of lesson themed games. plenty of things to keep you involved and advancing. Only drawback. latency, but tweaking your audio video settings will take care of that. The ubisoft support forums and the facebook groups are full of helpful and understanding people.
