Tolkien's Lord of the Rings universe is probably one of the most impressive and popular fantasy realms of all time, managing to impress millions of people through the initial books, the stellar movies, and the many different video games that have all been set within it. While the novels and the films certainly had a high quality level, the actual games haven't been all that great, either in terms of stories, gameplay, or both, although the Lego ones from Traveller's Tales managed to transform the films into some pretty fun interactive experiences. Now, developer Monolith wants to usher in a new era for Lord of the Rings titles with Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, an open world action adventure experience that borrows from the likes of Assassin's Creed or Batman: Arkham City in terms of gameplay, while offering a special LotR-inspired story. Does the new title make a lasting impression or should it be cast into the lava of Mount Doom? Let's find out. Previous games set in the Lord of the Rings universe have proved that, while the realm is filled with all sorts of great story possibilities, this isn't a guarantee that the actual plot might be an enjoyable one. Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor wants to deliver its own plot that only has veiled references to the larger adventures had by Bilbo or Frodo Baggins in the main fantasy tales. It focuses on Talion, a ranger from Gondor, who's tasked with defending the Black Gate of Mordor. Unfortunately, the mission doesn't go that well, as he's killed by Sauron's Orc (Urok) armies. Seeing as how that would make for a poor video game story, he's revived through a certain series of events and now wields powers like those of a wraith, which get more and more powerful throughout the game. What follows is a pretty great example of open world storytelling, which welcomes both veterans of the Lord of the Rings universe and newcomers. What's more, the game's story isn't just delivered through the main missions, as thanks to the Nemesis system, which I'll detail in the Gameplay portion of the review, you forge a meaningful connection of both friendship and rivalry with the many Urok captains you meet along the way. Talion is a pretty good protagonist, and if you want to learn more about his life before the game, pay attention to the dialogue offered during the title's main loading screen, as some pretty great scenes involving Talion, his wife, or his son play out. Overall, Shadow of Mordor is a fun romp through the Lord of the Rings universe and the plot is quite good, although you might end up caring more about the grudges held against Urok captains and warchiefs rather than the main characters in the story. Shadow of Mordor was already described ahead of its release as a love letter to Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed franchise, and Talion for sure can rival the likes of Ezio or Edward Kenway when it comes to exploration, for example. When it comes to combat, Talion also acts as a sort of Middle-earth Batman, as seen in the Arkham titles, thanks to the flowing fighting system. However, the game manages to innovate in both areas, and once you start spending some more time with it, manages to become its own standalone experience. The exploration is pretty fun, and while the stealth is relatively basic, it helps when dealing with large Urok camps at least to thin the ranks before jumping into combat. Speaking of fighting, Talion can use his nimble sword but also his bow and dagger to dispatch of foes. His weapons don't change throughout the game but you can upgrade them to unlock new moves and abilities, while adding certain runes to augment them with other bonuses, such as lifesteal, which comes in handy when engaging in prolonged fights. Speaking of health, there's no regeneration in Shadow of Mordor, which means you might have to run away from battles to a nearby herb, so that you can collect it and recover your lost health. Dying carries a pretty big penalty in the game, as not only do your killers get promoted through the Urok ranks, but plenty of other improvements are made to your enemies. The main claim to fame of Shadow of Mordor is the Nemesis system. During his adventures, Talion meets a variety of Urok captains, each with random advantages and disadvantages that range from buffs to damage to immunity to stealth attacks and other such things. Meeting them on the battlefield is pretty random, and you can certainly run from the fight if things aren't going so well. Prepare, however, to see your enemy come back and remind you of your lack of courage or inefficiency in combat. Once you develop your skills, you can also control some captains and make them double agents inside the Urok faction, usurping the power of the main Warchiefs that need to be killed to progress the story. This aspect adds a layer of strategy to the whole experience, as you can either go through steps to get a Warchief to appear in battle, or just help your chosen Uroks to ascend the ranks and become Warchiefs themselves, after which you can promptly kill them. The Nemesis system feels like a breath of fresh air, and once you start seeing it in action, you start to wonder why not more and more open world experiences develop such a mechanic, as it provides neat little random events and makes players care more about enemies that would just be random cannon fodder if not for their unique skills. Besides this great new feature, Shadow of Mordor fares quite well in terms of regular gameplay, offering not just a pretty fluid combat system, but also plenty of great enemies that constantly require players to switch things up in terms of their play style. Unfortunately, sometimes the camera can have a mind of its own, and considering you'll often find yourself in the middle of many Uroks, you won't know when to parry their blows or when to focus on a bigger foe. Visuals and Sound. Shadow of Mordor is a great-looking experience that manages to take the bleak and dark environments of Mordor and transform them into some really impressive-looking levels. What's more, after a while, the scenery changes dramatically and way more color is introduced, offering a lot of variety. Animations are pretty good and the framerate is solid on the Xbox One. The soundtrack is delightful and the voice acting is top-notch, with Troy Baker bringing Talion to life, while Nolan North handles the voice of villain The Black Hand of Sauron. Expect plenty of intense orchestral music, as befitting any grand adventure in Middle-earth, but also some pretty hilarious dialogue between Uroks when sneaking around their camps. That’s right.. youre dead… sort of… Youre stuck in limbo and seeking revenge.. but you soon find out youre attached to Elf Lord Celebrimbor who is also after the black hand… and with his power you turn into an assassins creed fans dream… You can hop from these towers and really any location without taking damage leap of faith style.. The game is set in an open world takes place on 2 maps. and you can unlock fast travel points on the maps by climbing towers like assassins creed.. Climbing in this game is automatic, done by just holding down a button which can make for some frustrating getaway moments during combat as expected.. not as smoth as the later installments of assassins creed has become.. but these maps are crawling with side missions power struggles and collectables… And there is actual incentive to star aside from the main story thanks to the different skill trees and leveling system in this game.. You of course aqquire skills by leveling up from killing orcs and completing quests… this lets you unlock new skilsl in your skill tree.. But to unlock more tiers in your skill tree you need more power.. power is acquired by taking out orcs in saurans army.. The first half of the game is all about climbing your way through the orc ranks and taking out the 5 warchiefs.. you do this by grabbing orcs, enetering their brains,, and getting intel on your target.. this intel will tell you their location, their strengths, power and their weaknesses… And once you feel youre prepared to take them down you can go into a power struggle to eliminate them.. But you have to be sure youre ready because of the games nemesis system… the combat here is fairly simple and plays like the batman arkham games and the ps3 assassins creed games… you can stealth kill enemies from bushes, ledges, behind, or from above.. use your bow to head shot or zip through thin air for a devastating blow.. ride in on the back of an animal or monster you’ve taimed in the wild.. or you can go in batman style countering attacks and going for annoying finishers that take 20 years to pull off and are nearly impossible to pull off outside of a main mission… This is my biggest complaint with the entire game… These missions to dethrone orcs are extremely frustrating because the game expects you to be able to take on 30 at a time while in the story they only ask you to deal with like 5 or 6 at a time.. The variety here is a lot like the arkham games where you eventually have to stun enemies or jump over their shields just to make things more frustrating… but every time you go to do a ground finisher itss get broken up because it takes so long to pull off, thankfully you are eventually able to pull of moves like executions once you get a hit streak going of 8 and later 5, but this doesn’t help these encounters from feeling cheap… if you do get knocked down,. You will.. a lot.. you have the opportunity to do a quick time event to get up again 2 or 3 times.. but eventually you will just die or if you mess up youll just die,, And dying makes things even worse as the orc that kills you will remember you, they get promoted in the ranks, and their power ioncreases making them even harder to take care of the next time… And then there are the collectibles and sidemissions that increase your attribvutes like health as well as open rune slots for your sword, bow, and dagger, these runes are picked up off of warchiefs and captains… Who also act as bodyguards… so its important to take out a targets bodyguards before you attack them to make your encounter easier… during the 2nd half of this 12 hours game.. you have to go through the same system.. this time however youre tasked with making your own army out of these orcs so you can challenge the black hand.. and you do this by your new ability to brand them.. Your goal is to now find a target and get them on your side.. you can either go right to a bodybuard or help your newly owed orc captain prove himself and become a bodybuard.. … Expand. Shadow of Mordor is the best Lord of the Rings game for nearly a decade, though considering the competition, that isn’t really saying much. More importantly, it’s a whole lot better than you might expect. It’s hardly the world’s most original game, but that doesn’t mean its short on thrills, drama or innovation. While descriptions of the game as Assassin’s Creed goes to Middle Earth aren’t entirely wide of the mark, they also don’t do the game justice. In fact, it has as much in common with another Warner Bros. property: the Batman: Akham Asylum/City/Origins series. It’s another free-roaming, open-world adventure with the focus on combat and stealth, and while there are elements of Assassin’s Creed in its stealth kills and free-running acrobatics, it’s much less focused on urban spaces or vertical exploration. Meanwhile the hard-hitting, counter-heavy melee combat is closer to the Batman style, down to the slow-mo finishers when you put down the last enemy in a gang. And Shadow of Mordor does bring something new to the party, and while this feature sounds like a gimmick, it turns out to be surprisingly profound. Nor, to its credit, does it wear its license lightly. The design of scenery and characters is 99% WETA and Peter Jackson, but the plot stretches deep into Tolkien’s backstory, so that the tale of a ranger of Gondor, bought back from death to avenge his murdered family, has richer implications than you first expect. Key characters from the lore are bought into play and not used cheaply, and while those who’ve studied the Simarillion will doubtless have a dozen or more complaints, those who love The Lord of The Rings and The Hobbit and the movie adaptations will find that Shadow of Mordor feels like a natural extension. Here your protagonist is Talion, a ranger charged with defending the walls surrounding Mordor just as Sauron returns to the scene. Bad timing. His fort over-run by orcs and his wife and son slain by a mysterious figure known only as the Black Hand of Sauron, Talion himself is slaughtered. However, death turns out not to be the end. Instead, he finds himself trapped in a kind of limbo, alive but bound to the wraith of a long dead elf-lord, and doomed to keep coming back to life until he can avenge his kin; a bit like the fantasy equivalent of Bill Murray in Groundhog Day. Sadly, Talion doesn’t get to relive the same day in smalltown USA; he gets to wander around Mordor slaying orcs. Our hero’s only hope of finding peace is to kill the Black Hand, but how does he get to this fiendish sorcerer? The answer turns out to be murdering his way up the ranks of Uruk-Hai, slaughtering the captains, their commanders and the warchiefs at the top. To do this he needs to identify his targets, and there are only ways to do it. One is to interrogate those directly below, taking him up the chain of command, while the other is to use the services of a delightfully Machiavellian, albeit hapless warchief wannabe; the almost lovable Ratbag the Coward. Cue multiple assassinations, infiltrations, straight up fights and the occasional boss battle, all of which test Talion’s interesting and varied skillset. Like the stars of Assassin’s Creed he can sneak behind orcs and stab them from behind, or climb to a vantage point and jump them from above. He can also dangle from a ledge and stab them from below, or use the wraith’s unearthly bow to slay them from a distance. As in the Batman games, you’ll often find yourself surrounded by multiple enemies, using quick, well-timed counters to ward off incoming blows, then fighting back with quick slashes and – if you can down your foes – a finishing move. At first the combat is a struggle. You’ll find yourself under attack from too many orcs and spending too much time countering to land a decent blow. What’s more, the finishing moves seem to take ages, leaving you vulnerable to an incoming attack unless you break to counter, at which point your would-be victim jumps up for another go. In Middle Earth, it seems, just the one stab to the throat is no discouragement. Throw in some awful camera angles and the fighting can be infuriating. Persevere, however, and things slot into place. You get smart, learning to isolate targets or cut down the numbers with stealth or bow attacks. You also grow more powerful, using XP and the local currency to buy additional skills, which allow you to dish out critical hits, follow a magic stun attack with a flurry of blows or scatter enemies with a circular blast. Add in environmental options, like insect hives that confuse orcs or exploding barrels to thin down the numbers, and the action eventually gets a whole lot easier. Meanwhile, each death actually plays its own part in the gameplay. Shadow of Mordor uses a thing called the ‘nemesis system’, where the ranks of orcs you’re slaughtering aren’t static, but change as specific orc captains grow more or less powerful, or die at your hands or at the hands of rivals. Defeat an orc captain and he might come back from the brink of death with vengeance on his mind. Be defeated, and that captain might rise in rank, and even ordinary orcs can be promoted if they happen to take you out. As the orcs move up the ladder they grow more powerful and, unfortunately, more difficult to kill. On the plus side, a dead captain will often drop a rune, which you can add to your sword or dagger. The more powerful the captain, the more powerful this rune will be, making it advantageous to take out the senior orcs. Any orcs who have encountered you before remember you, and this and their distinctive – if vile personalities – make for a game that feels weirdly alive. Nothing makes you want to slay an orc more than a sneering comment once they’ve dealt you a fatal blow. You’re not just fighting another faceless bunch of thugs, but trying to take out the bastard orc that killed you last time, or the one that you know is after your head. More than a gimmick, the nemesis system turns out to be a great idea. Be sure that other games will pinch it. The system also feeds into the wider action. Each orc captain has his own strengths and weaknesses, and you can discover these by interrogating any officers who report to them. Some, you’ll find, might be invulnerable to stealth or ranged attacks, while others become weaker if you can attack them when mounted on a savage, snarling Caragor (the closest thing you get to a faithful steed in Mordor). Beyond slaying, you can get your teeth into other activities. Finding, climbing and ‘reforging’ ghostly wraith towers will give you more respawn/fast-travel points and open up new missions in the area. Completing combat challenges will earn you cash you can use to buy new skills or weapon ugrade slots. Herbs and artefacts can be discovered, the former healing, the latter unlocking background lore. Meanwhile, two completely different strings of story missions see you tracking a familiar face to discover the identity and history of your new wraith ally, or working with a gang of escaped human slaves and outcasts to fight a guerrilla war against the orcs. Many of the few faults there are will be familiar to fans of open world games. Like the Assassin’s Creed games, Shadow of Mordor can feel too heavily driven by its systems; there’s always a lot to do, but some of it grows repetitive with time. Riding Caragor should be one of the highpoints of the game, but your snarling, orc-chomping mounts are hard to handle. While the graphics are impressively detailed and packed with next-gen goodness, we’re talking about a land of broken grey rock, craggy grey mountains, weather-beaten grey ruins and ugly orc fortresses. With good, demanding combat, excellent stealth and enemies worth slaying it’s more compulsive than you might expect, and it treats the license with some respect as well.
