Can Sea of Thieves be the Xbox One's No Man's Sky?

Sea of Thieves for Xbox One and Windows 10 is Microsoft’s first big game of the year. In the run up to its March 20 release date, we checked out the Sea of Thieves beta and came back impressed - and wary - all at once. Here’s why.
Developed by British game developer Rare, Sea of Thieves is a pirate-themed action adventure game set in an open-world with multiplayer cooperative elements, which is basically the grown up way of saying you play as a pirate who can sail on the high seas with your friends, and shoot them out of cannons. Yes, much like Rare’s past efforts, there’s a cartoonish, whimsical twist to the proceedings that manifests itself in a gorgeous art style and exaggerated physics that allow for some creative liberties such as the presence of mermen, skeleton pirates, and the afterlife serving as a creepy vessel known as the Ferry of the Undead.
Suffice to say, if you were expecting something remotely similar to the naval battles of Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag, or the intense offshore encounters of Assassin’s Creed Origins, think again. The colourful visuals, infectious music, and somewhat wobbly traversal make for an experience that’s unique to Sea of Thieves, though it does suffer from non-existent tutorials and signposting. It was impossible to understand what the objective of the game was at first, leaving us to exploring a hub island that had a few stores to buy gear such as clothes and supplies, and a bar that let us get drunk on grog.
After getting bored of that, we took to the vast ocean surrounding us. There’s a bit of a learning curve involved when sailing. Lowering or raising the anchor, judging the direction of the wind, and managing the amount of sail needed as well as steering the ship, all need to be taken into consideration. It took us a few shipwrecks, and one try that resulted in us becoming shark fodder, before getting it right. Then navigation and sailing became second nature and we found ourselves visiting exotically-named locales such as Marauder’s Arch, Shark Fin Camp, Black Sand Atoll, and Sea Dog’s Rest.
Some of these areas were deserted islands, and others were outposts complete with cannons to welcome would-be intruders (including ourselves) and a few were replete with what appeared to be bones of huge, mythical beasts and graves marked with skulls. All of them were infested by skeleton pirates, other human players, or in some cases both. While the former would easily be dispatched with a well-placed shot from our pistol or musket (that comes complete with a scope), the latter proved tougher. The gunplay, particularly with the pistol, suffered from a large amount of recoil that almost always ensured we had to take a moment or more before firing a shot, making close-range encounters a frantic dance for the right position as we’d pull the trigger. It gave combat a somewhat clunky albeit workable feel that made scoring a kill immensely satisfying.
This aside, barring the odd server error that did not allow us to connect at all, the Sea of Thieves beta was smooth when we got in. On the Xbox One X, it looked fantastic with great water effects, generous draw distances, and character designs that really shine in ultra high-definition. However, it isn’t without its drawbacks. Granted this is just a slice of what to expect from Sea of Thieves when it hits in March, but the content at hand while vast, seemed to be the same thing over and over. It reminds us of No Man’s Sky at launch, which while having a number of planets to uncover, felt repetitive. It took the better part of a year before it was worth revisiting. Could Sea of Thieves suffer from the same concerns at launch? We hope not, simply because what we’ve experienced is entertaining, both when playing alone, or with friends.
Nonetheless, we’re cautiously optimistic about Sea of Thieves. The beta showed off stellar production values and polished core gameplay. Hopefully, the full game goes above and beyond that.

How to play the Sea of Thieves beta on Xbox One and Windows 10.
One of Microsoft's most anticipated games of 2018, Sea of Thieves, is set to kick off its closed beta soon, with nearly a week of testing set to occur. Taking place across both Xbox One and Windows 10, the beta will set you free with your pirate crew for a sneak peek of the full experience.
Ahead of the game's formal debut on March 20, players will soon have the chance to explore the seas, with access to a fraction of its final content. And provided you meet the prerequisites, your first adventure likely isn't far away. Here's what you need to know about the Sea of Thieves beta and how to play for yourself.
Sea of Thieves closed beta dates and times.
The Sea of Thieves closed beta test kicks off on January 24, running for five days, before concluding on January 29. Throughout this time, a curated beta experience will be offered, with the goal of delivering an taster of what's to come. The game's developer, Rare, is keen to note that while a wide range of content will be accessible, it still aims to keep a "good selection of things" up its sleeves for players to discover at launch.
Updated January 25, 2018: The closed beta was originally set to end on January 29, but Rare has extended it to January 31 after things got off to a rough start. The dates below have been updated to reflect this change.
The Sea of Thieves beta will be playable across both supported platforms from 7 a.m. ET (4 a.m. PT / 12 p.m. UK time) on January 24 . To conclude the beta period, servers are currently scheduled to shut off at 3 a.m. ET (12 a.m. PT / 8 a.m. UK time) on January 31 .
How to play the Sea of Thieves closed beta.
Unlike many video game betas, where players can simply install the game at their choosing, the Sea of Thieves beta is closed to qualified participants. Currently, Microsoft has three methods of accessing the beta – a digital pre-order via the Microsoft Store, a redeemable "Black Dog Pack" code, or being a registered member of the "Sea of Thieves Insider Programme." And as a "Play Anywhere" title, each of these provide access to both Xbox One and Windows 10 versions of the game.
Updated January 24, 2018: It appears some testers are unable to access to Sea of Thieves beta, with a "too early" error being displayed, despite its official launch having passed. The Sea of Thieves Twitter account has acknowledged the issue and has reassured a fix is on the way. For now, it appears there isn't a client-side fix for this error.
For those who preordered Sea of Thieves digitally on Xbox One or Windows 10, the closed beta is already tied to your account. To install the game on Xbox One, you'll need to navigate to the "Ready to Install" section of "My games & apps," where the Sea of Thieves closed beta will be available for download. Alternatively, those on Windows 10 PCs are required to open the Microsoft Store, navigate to the ellipsis in the top right-hand corner and select "My Library." From here, the Sea of Thieves closed beta will be available for download.
The Black Dog Pack code is provided to those who preordered Sea of Thieves from a third-party reseller, outside of the Microsoft Store. For those who preordered from GameStop, Best Buy and Amazon, beta access is distributed via these codes. To redeem your code for use on Xbox One or Windows 10, navigate to microsoft.com/redeem and follow the on-screen steps to apply the code to your account.
Finally, Sea of Thieves closed beta access also comes via the Sea of Thieves Insider Programme, for those who enrolled as "Founders" prior to December 1, 2017. These are players who registered to join, either in an attempt to access previous alpha tests or secure access to the closed beta. Founders will be able to access the beta by opening the "Xbox Insider Hub" on Xbox One or Windows 10 and selecting the Sea of Thieves beta tile.

The closed beta for Microsoft's upcoming pirate game, Sea of Thieves, is set to begin tomorrow, January 24, and players can now start preparing for it ahead of time. The beta is available to pre-load on both Xbox One and PC, though only certain players will be able to participate in it. [ Update: The Sea of Thieves beta is now available.]
Like the Sea of Thieves technical alpha back in December, tomorrow's beta is restricted to those who either joined the Sea of Thieves Insider Program prior to December 1, 2017 or have pre-ordered the title. Xbox One players who reserved Sea of Thieves digitally from the Xbox Store will find the beta waiting in the My Games and Apps section of their console's dashboard, while those who pre-ordered the game on PC via the Microsoft Store will find it in their Library. If you reserved the game at retail, you'll need to redeem the code you received for the Black Dog cosmetic pack on the Microsoft Store (PC) or Xbox Store (Xbox One) before installing the beta. The beta client weighs in at 7.45 GB on Xbox One; you can read more about how to install it on the official Sea of Thieves website.
The Sea of Thieves closed beta begins at 4 AM PT / 7 AM ET / 12 PM GMT on January 24 and runs until 12 AM PT / 3 AM ET / 8 AM GMT on January 29. Developer Rare hasn't detailed what players could expect from the beta, but the studio did confirm it won't be a portion of the full game but rather a tailored experience "that offers a true taste of the pirate life."
Beyond the game itself, a Sea of Thieves art book is being published by Dark Horse later this year. Titan Comics is also releasing a Sea of Thieves graphic novel series around the game's launch in March.

Время загрузки зависит от скорости вашего подключения к Интернету. В среднем загрузка 10 ГБ через канал со скоростью 20 Мбит/с займет примерно один час.
Выполните действия, описанные в разделе выше Каковы требования к оборудованию?, чтобы определить размер игры для Xbox и Windows 10. Они могут быть разными в зависимости от того, какое устройство вы устанавливаете.
В таблице ниже приведены оценки времени загрузки на основе текущей скорости загрузки.
Примечание. Это исключительно справочные сведения и не отражают фактического времени загрузки. Время загрузки увеличивается, а полоса пропускания сужается во время потоковой передачи контента, игр и потоковой передачи игры с Xbox One на ПК с Windows 10.

Если устанавливается файл размером 20 ГБ и загружено уже 25% (осталось 15 ГБ), а скорость подключения равна 10 Мбит/с, то для завершения загрузки потребуется 3,4 часа. (При этом предполагается, что скорость загрузки неизменна).
Во время загрузки игры не отменяйте загрузку и не выключайте компьютер. Значок Sea of Thieves появится в списке Установленные приложения меню Пуск на консоли Xbox и в разделе Моя библиотека на устройстве Windows 10.
Примечание. При загрузке игры может потребоваться дополнительно заплатить за интернет-трафик.

Можно использовать мышь и клавиатуру или игровой геймпад (рекомендуется геймпад Xbox One или Xbox 360). Если используется геймпад Xbox One, то вам потребуется USB-кабель для подключения устройства или Беспроводной адаптер Xbox для Windows.

Другие USB-геймпады, поддерживаемые Windows, также могут работать.

В Sea of Thieves можно играть только при подключении к сети. Кроме того, вам понадобится подписка Xbox Live Gold для доступа ко всем режимам игры. Вы не сможете играть в эту игру не в сети.
На консоли Xbox вы можете установить Sea of Thieves на домашней консоли, а также на консолях друзей, если перед игрой выполните вход в службу Xbox Live.
В Windows 10 вы можете установить Sea of Thieves на основном устройстве (обычно это первое устройство, на которое вы установили игру), а также установить игру на несколько устройств, если перед игрой выполнен вход в службу Xbox Live.
