How to Change NAT Type on Your Xbox One. Xbox One is one of the most popular video game consoles currently on the market. One of the things that makes it great is the ability to connect with other players through the network. You can chat with friends, have multiplayer games and many other things. However, the ability to do this depends on the NAT type you have set up. NAT is short for Network Address Translation. Depending on the type, your console can be either connected to other devices or not. Usually, your Xbox One will come with a Strict NAT type by default. Unfortunately, this means that you cannot chat with other users or join a multiplayer game. However, there is a way around this – you can change the type to Open. The Open option will provide you with the best playing experience. Not only will you be able to chat (voice chat, too), and join games, but you will also be able to match with other players – easily and quickly. If you want the full experience, here is how you can get it. First up, go to the Settings and open Network Settings . Then check your NAT type. If it is already Open, there is no need to change anything – you are all set up. But if it isn’t, do the following: while you are still in the Network Settings, go to the Advanced Settings option. Click on it to open new options. Here, choose the IP Settings and set it on Manual . This will allow you to change the address yourself, anytime you want. Once you do this, you will need to type in a few things. Change the IP address, subnet mask and the gateway address . However, be wary that the address you put in needs to be used only by your device. If you don’t already know your IP, you can find it out by going to your computer and Googling it, or running the Command Prompt . If you choose the second option (Command Prompt) type “ ipconfig ” (without the quotation marks) and press Enter . You can find the IP address there, subnet mask and gateway there. If User 3 tried to connect to 192.168.1.100, he would never find User 1 or User 2. The IP addresses User 1 and User 2 are using are INTERNAL IP addresses. These numbers only hold meaning to devices connected to the same router (network). This is where NAT comes into play. Your ISP (Internet Service Provider) is pushing an EXTERNAL IP address to your modem or gateway, which is how your router gains access to the internet. Most home networks have a single IP address. (If your home network has multiple IP addresses, you would know it, be paying more for it, and would probably have enough understanding of networking not to bother with this article.) Since your home network has a single IP address, it is only meant to connect one device to the internet. Using NAT, your router gives all devices on your network access to your external IP address. It does this by packaging up all requests sent to the router by devices on the network that have internal IP addresses and sending those packages out to the internet through the external IP address. So here is our new network configuration once the NAT is opened: User 1, living in North Carolina, has just finished installing his router, but this time, he configured port 5000 to forward to the IP address 192.168.1.100. He also went to www.ipchicken.com and found his external IP address to be 123.123.123.10. Remove any wireless networks you have added, and re-add them AFTER you have completed the steps in each method. Method 1 – Port Forwarding/Port Triggering. As previously mentioned in the Scenario, User 1 FORWARDED a specific port to his PC to allow User 3 to connect. In order for your Xbox One to connect to the Xbox Live servers as well as to other users online, it must use specific ports. These ports need to be open so that the Xbox One can communicate properly. In order to open these ports, you will need to log into the administration panel of your router and assign a static IP address (or DHCP Reservation) to your console. This process is different for every router or gateway, and guides for your specific model can be found by Googling and your router model and “port forwarding.” After you have assigned a static IP address to your console, you can either forward the following ports to the IP address of your console or trigger ports in the range 88-88, 3074-3074, etc. It is recommended that you use the Triggering method, as it allows multiple devices to trigger the same open ports, instead of the ports being dedicated to only the Xbox. Additionally, there are a few other ports floating around the internet with which other users have had success. They are as follows: For Chat/Party/Matchmaking, try forwarding/triggering Port 16000 (UDP & TCP). For Kinect/Skype/Video issues, try forwarding/triggering Port 1863 (UDP & TCP). Xbox One seems to use Port 3075 instead of the 3074 that Xbox 360 used. After searching around, this may only be related to Call of Duty Ghosts, but you can try forwarding/triggering Port 3075. Now, go to your Xbox One, and connect to your network. DO NOT enter static network information. Set it to Automatic instead of Manual. This ensures your router is doing all the work it is supposed to be doing. Now, select Test Multiplayer Connection . When your connection results are presented, before pushing A for Continue, press and hold LB + LT + RB + RT on your controller, and this will take you to the super secret Detailed Network Statistics screen with a Detailed NAT status. The Detailed NAT status will initially have “….” Wait 60-90 seconds, and it will update with one of NAT types mentioned above. The goal is to be behind a cone NAT, which should give an OPEN NAT type. This method is somewhat similar to the previous method, except it is a bit easier. However, there are fewer routers that support DMZ than there are those that support Port Forwarding/Triggering. Refer to your router/gateway’s owner’s manual to determine if your product supports DMZ. (It may also be referred to as DMZ+ or DMZPlus.) If not, skip to Method 3. The objective here is to create a “Demilitarized Zone” for your Xbox One. This Demilitarized zone will forward all ports to the Xbox One, ensuring any and all ports are able to have a connection to the Xbox Live servers and other Xbox Live users. To set up a DMZ, you must first set up a static IP address in your router for your Xbox One. If you have not done so yet, do it now, and retry Method 1. If you followed Method 1 and have already got your Xbox One on a static IP address, continue reading. Disable Port Forwarding/Triggering on your router, or if you use forwarding/triggering for other services, remove the port rules you created in Method 1. Now, log into your router, follow your owner’s manual to locate the DMZ feature, and enable it. Some routers point DMZ to a specific IP address where you should enter the static IP address of your Xbox One. Others point DMZ to a specific MAC address, which should be the MAC address of your Xbox One. Again, remove any previous network settings that you have tried on your Xbox One, and reset the network settings to factory default. Now, go to your Xbox One, and connect to your network. DO NOT enter static network information. Instead, set it to Automatic, not Manual. This ensures your router is doing all of the work it is supposed to be doing. UPnP, or Universal Plug and Play, is a set of networking protocols that permit networked devices, such as the Xbox One, to seamlessly discover each other’s presence on the network and establish functional network services. It is intended primarily for residential networks without enterprise-class devices. Therefore, it basically allows your Xbox One to automatically tell our router what ports it wants to use, and the router will let it do so, without having to manually configure any settings. You are probably thinking: “If my router can automatically do this, why did you save this one for last?!” Well, UPnP does not work well on the Xbox One, at least for some users. I am unsure if this will be patched or if the consoles should be returned to manufacturer, but my console is one of the unlucky ones with which UPnP does not work (at least without putting the console in Energy Saver mode, which I will cover later). With this method, having a static IP address configured for your Xbox One is not mandatory, but I always recommend assigning static IP addresses to devices that get used regularly. Also, remove all ports forwarded/triggered from Method 1. To enable UPnP, consult with your router/gateway’s owner’s manual which should tell you where UPnP is located in the router’s administration panel. Log into your router, and follow the owner’s manual to enable UPnP. Some routers will have the option to Clear port forwards at startup , which I recommend enabling if the option is available. Again, remove any previous network settings that you have tried on your Xbox One, and reset the network settings to factory default. Now, go to your Xbox One, and connect to your network. It has been reported that when the Xbox One is in Instant-On power mode , UPnP does not register properly with your router, and Energy Saver mode allows UPnP to register properly. This is definitely a bug on the Xbox One that needs to be resolved. Xbox has a guide to switching power modes that will come in handy for you. Follow the guide to switch your Xbox One to Save Energy mode, and retry Method 3. I personally was able to achieve Open NAT without switching to energy saver by only triggering ports. I would prefer to allow UPnP to handle the port requests, as I use it on my network for other services. However, for the time being, I have simply triggered all the ports my other services need. For my specific case, assigning my Xbox One a static IP address and adding all ports, including the bonus ports, I was able to achieve an OPEN NAT in both network settings and online gaming. So I did some more digging and found out that the term NAT Type is very well-known in the console gaming world. So if you’re a hardcore console gamer (Xbox or PlayStation) but sorta noob on networking, then you’d better read this post to understand what you’re asking about and what you should be looking for. PlayStation and Xbox categorize your Network Connection state to various types, they called it NAT types. I haven’t seen a console GUI ever before (not shy about that), but the NAT Types they’re mentioning about can be found on the console’s networking settings, then Test Connection or any term or label that says the same. I don’t have Consoles, but I play games on PC and I forward a lot of different ports on my router to optimize my online gaming experience. Now, depending on how your router or modem is configured, your console will show what NAT Types you’re currently at. Xbox and PlayStation categorize NAT Types like so: To explain that further, read below. What are NAT Types. Here’s how PlayStation and Xbox describes NAT Types. Type 1 NAT or Open NAT – With this type of NAT, the console is directly connected to the Internet. You connection enables you to chat with other players, join and host a multi-player or cooperative game with other players on the network. Overall, you will not have any issues with your connection. You could also use a router with this type of NAT and make it appear as though the console is directly connected to the Internet. To do that you could either: Connected to your modem via bridged-mode or PPoE and Firewall is disabled. Only applicable with DSL Internet connections. Enable DMZ in your router to direct inward traffic to your console’s IP address. This is not recommended for several security reasons . Now this NAT Type or routing setup is not secure since all your network ports are exposed to the Internet. Imagine what a would be hacker could do if your system is totally exposed to the Internet. Firewall is disabled on your Modem/Router, setting all ports in open state. Basically, this NAT Type is what you should be getting for your gaming Console. Type 2 NAT or Moderate NAT – You have a Type 2 NAT if your console (Sony PS4 Console or Microsoft Xbox Console) is connected to a Router to access the Internet. Usually you use this kind of setup to share your Internet connection with other users or devices within your Local Area Network or Home Network. With this type of NAT you should be able to chat, play cooperative or multiplayer games with other user on the PS4 or Xbox network. However, you may also encounter some voice chat audio issues with other players. To fix the issue with this NAT type, read further below and learn how to solve this. Type 3 or Strict NAT – With this type, your system is connected to the Internet via a Router, and Firewall may be enabled or disabled on it. A strict NAT Type enables your Xbox to ONLY play cooperative or multiplayer games and chat with other users on the Xbox network, however, you could only chat and play with users who have an Open NAT Type or Type 1 NAT . You can’t be chosen to host a game match if you’re into this kind of NAT. You do this not on your Console, but on your Modem or Router. So when you say “ Change NAT Type “, you actually need to tinker with your Modem or Router and not with your Console’s configs. So essentially, you should be asking… how to port forward to get an Open or Type 1 NAT. But you don’t always have to do this just to have an Open NAT status. Yeah that’s right! You don’t have to forward ports to your PS4 or Xbox, if your Router has UPnP feature. You might ask again… How To Get an Open NAT Type on PS4 or Xbox without Port Forwarding? Simple answer is, enable Universal Plug n Play (UPnP) on your Router if it has it. What the heck is UPnP. UPnP or Universal Plug N Play feature on a Router let’s your device seamlessly connect to your network without any further configuration. It opens the necessary ports for you and closes it when no longer used. So this would be very helpful feature especially when you have several Consoles within your LAN or Home Network, accessing the Internet all at the same time. That being said, UPnP would not always work especially with crappy Router brands and hardwares. But Linux-based and BSD-based software Routers is best for serving UPnP functionalities. If you want to try one of these Software Routers, then learn how to install PFSense or try flashing your Router with DD-WRT, OpenWRT or Tomato. How to enable UPnP? Enabling this on a DD-WRT Router, you need to go to NAT / QoS Tab. Then UPnP > Tick Enable radio box for UPnP Service, then tick Enable for Clear port forwards on startup , and finally click Save button. Reboot the router by going to Administration tab, then Management and Reboot router on the bottom of the page. You need to know that these configs worked on my country (Philippines), using Globe Tattoo Broadband as my ISP, Aztech DSL5001EN as my Modem (with Router by disabled it), and Linksys WRT54G2 with DD-WRT Firmware as my Router. So any port forwarding configs shown in this post shall be done using the above mentioned devices. Before starting off with this guide, make sure that you already have a Modem set in bridged-mode, and that, it is fully working with your current home network setup. Sony PS4 and Microsoft Xbox Port Details. Here are the necessary ports and protocols that needs forwarding to your Console. Additional Info: For PlayStation, set Protocol for port range 3478-3480 and 6000-7000 to BOTH . For Xbox, set Protocol for port 3074 to BOTH . Procedures. Port forwarding is almost similar with all Routers on the market today. One difference is the term or label used on their router settings. On some routers, Port Forward is labeled as Port Map. You also need to know what protocols needs forwarding, which are, TCP and UDP. Also take note about Port Ranges, these are multiple ports that needs forwarding. Typically, you just need to fill up From field and To field of your Router’s port-forwarding page. A dash - indicates a port range, like the ones listed above. For this guide, I’m gonna be using my Linksys WRT54G2 Router, flashed with DD-WRT . Also used in this guide is my Aztech 5001EN CPE Modem issued by Globe Telecom Philippines. You could use this guide with other Routers on the market, you just need to apply the basic idea of forwarding ports to a single node or IP address. Note 1: Port forwarding is point-less when your ISP blocks several ports from their Firewall. And if your console is using DHCP assigned IP address or dynamic IP address. Also, you won’t be able to do some port forwarding if your ISP locks you out from your CPE (modem/router). This means that, you don’t have admin access to your Modem or Router. In addition to this, you also couldn’t even make any changes to your CPE. So in that case, you need to search for alternative ways on how you would access (w/ admin priviledge)your CPE. Before you start with the guide, make sure you have the correct user account that has the administrative privileges for your Router. You won’t be able to modify setting on your Router if you don’t have this. Step 1 – Assigned a Static IP Address to your Console. There are two ways to assign a static IP address to your Xbox or PS4; 1.) Manually configure your network settings and assign a static IP address with the right subnet mask and gateway address.2.) Assign a Static DHCP Lease to your Console, you need to know your Console’s MAC address for this. For me, it’s more easier to use and implement the Static DHCP Lease. So that’s what we’re going to do with this step. With Static DHCP Lease , your Console should always have the same IP address, though you did not set it to have a static IP address on your console. IP address stays the same even after Console or Router reboot. You need to set this on your router and not on your Console. You need to take note of your Console’s hostname or device name and MAC Address if you’re going to set a Static DHCP Lease. To know your Xbox’s hostname , go to; Settings > System > Network Settings > Available Network. Your-current-network > Configure Network > Additional Settings > Advance Settings > Hostname. Enter your desired hostname or leave the one that’s in there. Take note of the name. To know your Xbox’s MAC address , go to; Settings > System > Network Settings > `Available Network. Your-current-network > Configure Network > Additional Settings > Advance Settings > …and you should see your MAC address here. To know your Sony PS4 Console’s MAC address , using your XBM (Cross Media Bar) menu, go to; Settings > Network > View Connection Status > …then look for MAC Address. To know or change your PS4 hostname or name , go to; Settings > System Information > Name. So once you got your Console’s hostname and MAC address, go ahead and login to your Router and set parameters there. To set Static DHCP Lease for DD-WRT Router , go to; Services > Services Management. Scroll down a bit until you see the Static Leases block. Click on Add button to create a new set of fields for your entry. You need to fill up MAC Address , Host Name and IP Address . In my case, I filled up the fields like so; After doing this, reboot your Router then your Console. Check your network information or status and see if you’re getting the right IP address you set in the Router. If so, then continue with step 2. Step 2 – Set port forwarding rules. To forward ports to your Console, you should know the needed ports to forward. Consult with the Port Details posted above. This step is very straight forward, you just need to fill things. So here we go. From your DD-WRT router, go to NAT / QoS tab then Port Forwarding . Click Add button to add a new set of fields. You need to fill the following fields: Step 3 – Forward the rest of the ports. Repeat step 2 above and forward the other needed ports for your Xbox or PS4. Note: A dash or hyphen ( - ) indicates a port range. Step 4 – Save all changes and reboot your Router. Click on Save button then go to Administration tab, scroll down to bottom and click on Reboot Router . If you get an Open NAT, then you did it! You’ve forwarded ports correctly. NOTE 2: – There are some games that also needs port forwarding, so you need to know what ports are being used and create the necessary forwarding rules. Aztech DSL5001EN Port Forward. If you have this Modem issued by Globe Broadband (a Philippine ISP), port forwarding with it is a bit different compared to my DD-WRT Router. Below is a quick tutorial on how to port forward with Aztech DSL5001EN Modem+Router. First of, you need to know the Super Admin login info for your Modem. The known login details is given below. User Name: admin User Pass: 3UJUh2VemEfUtesEchEC2d2e. Fire up your browser and go to 192.168.254.254 . Login using the details mentioned above. Step 2 – Navigate to Advance Mode. Click on the Advance Mode Tab to access the advance configuration page. Step 3 – Navigate to Router Features. Click on Router Features button to access advance features and functions. Step 4 – Go to Port Forwarding page. Click on the Port Forwarding tab to access the configuration page. Step 5 – Fill up the necessary fields. On this page, you need to fill up the following fields: Custom application name – Enter a unique name for each rule Public Port Range – Port numbers for your console Private Port Range – same with Public Port Local IP Address – IP Address set on your Console Protocol – TCP, UDP or Both. In my case, I filled up Custom application name with incrementing numbers. Like xbox 01, xbox 02, xbox 03 and so on. You must have already set a static IP address on your Console. To fill the fields up, you need to click the edit button for Rule 0 and continue with the rest of the Rule numbers. Use the port numbers provided above for your Xbox or PS4. When done with the rules, reboot your Modem by going to Admin > Reboot and click on the Reboot button. After that, check your Console’s network status. You should be getting an Open NAT. Getting a Static DHCP Lease. If you want to get a static IP address for your Console, without configuring your Console’s network settings, this method will work best for you. To set this on your Aztech 5001EN modem, you need to know your Console’s MAC address. I’ve already mentioned how you could do this. Let’s get started with this whenever you’re ready. Step 4 – Then go to MAC/IP Address Reservation. You only need to fill two things; IP Address and MAC Address. Just enter the IP address you want for your Console, take note that no other devices should be using that IP address. Next, enter your Console’s MAC address. Click ADD button and reboot your router. You should be now getting a static IP automatically even if your reboot your Router or Console. It’s a Wrap! It’s that simple and easy to modify your NAT Type. All it takes is to configure your Router. So I hope this post answered your question and you learned from it. So, to those who asked how to change NAT type from Strict NAT to Open NAT on PS4 or Xbox… port forwarding is what you actually needs (or UPnP). But if your Router supports it, you must try UPnP first before resorting to Port Forwarding. Because with UPnP, you don’t have to configure anything, you just need to enable it from your Router. BUT you must set a static IP address for your Console. So in order to have an Open NAT, you need to port forward the necessary ports from your Router to your PS4 or Xbox. Types Of NAT Explained (Port Restricted NAT, etc) All types of NAT fall into two categories; Static NAT and Dynamic NAT. Static NAT is where administrators manually create and maintain the NAT mappings and is usually associated with inbound types of NAT. Dynamic NAT is where the router creates and maintains mappings automatically on demand and is usually associated with outbound types of NAT. Common Traits To All Types of NAT. Every TCP/IP packet contains a source IP address, source port, destination IP address and destination port. All types of NAT create NAT mappings using these values. For example a connection from an internal client with IP 192.168.0.1 using port 56876 may go to a website IP 56.45.78.89 (destination IP address) on port 80 (destination port) using IP of 45.34.78.98 (translated source IP) and port 56876 (source port). NAT creates a mapping using these 4 values to the 192.168.0.1 internal client for that specific connection. When packets come back from the website to the router using the same values associated with that mapping NAT forwards the packets to the internal client. Dont confuse NAT restriction with NAT translation – For example a Ful Cone NAT only looks at the destination port when choosing whether to accept the connection or not (the restriction). When it does the actual the NAT translation however, it always uses the 4 values mentioned above. There are four types of NAT as follows: Full Cone NAT (Static NAT) A full cone NAT (also known as a one to one NAT) is the only type of NAT where the port is permanently open and allows inbound connections from any external host . A full cone NAT maps a public IP address and port to a LAN IP and port. Any external host can send data to the LAN IP through the mapped NAT IP and port. If it tries to send data through a different port it will fail. This type of NAT is also known as port forwarding. This is the least restrictive type of NAT; the only requirement is that the connection comes in on a specific port (the one you opened). Example – My PC has a website running on port 80. I create a one-to-one rule that maps the router WAN IP of 81.45.87.98 to 192.168.0.1 with port 80 to port 80. Any external host that sends data to 81.45.87.98 on port 80 is NATed (and sent) to 192.168.0.1 port 80. Note: the port numbers do not have to be the same; I could run my website on port 56456 but create the NAT mapping to forward port 80 to port 56456. This gives the appearance to the public Internet that my website is on port 80. A connection attempt on any other port is dropped. Restricted Cone NAT (Dynamic NAT) A restricted cone NAT works in the same way as a full cone NAT but applies additional restrictions based on an IP address. The internal client must first have sent packets to IP address (X) before it can receive packets from X. In terms of restrictions the only requirement is that packets come in on the mapped port and from an IP address that the internal client has sent packets to. Example – My PC makes an outbound connection to a website (56.45.34.78) with my source IP 192.168.0.1 and source port 56723. The NAT creates a (dynamic) mapping to my PC using source port 56723. Packets that arrive with a source IP of 56.45.34.78 (the website IP) using a destination port of 56723 (which was the outbound NATed source port) will be accepted and sent to my PC. Connection attempts from any other IP using the correct port of 56723 will be dropped. Connection attempts from the correct IP with a destination port other than 56723 will also be dropped. Port Restricted Cone NAT (Dynamic NAT) A port restricted cone NAT acts in exactly the same way as a restricted cone NAT but applies restrictions to ports also. Where a restricted cone NAT will accept connections from any source port a port restricted cone NAT restricts this further by only accepting connections from the IP address and port it sent the outbound request to. Example – My PC makes an outbound connection to website IP 217.87.69.8 on port 80 (destination port). The NAT maps my source IP 192.168.0.1 to the WAN IP of 81.45.87.98 and source port 56723. When the website sends packets back it must have it’s source IP as 217.87.69.8, destination port as 56723 (like a restricted cone NAT) but in addition the source port must be 80. If any of these three are different a port restricted cone NAT drops the connection. Symmetric NAT (Dynamic NAT) A symmetric NAT applies restrictions exactly the same way as a port restricted cone NAT but handles the NAT translation differently. Symmetric NAT is more complicated and has it’s own unique problem so I have wrote a separate article dedicated to Symmetric NAT and It’s Problems.
