Matchmaking on Xbox One with Smart Match.
When we revealed Xbox One to the world in May, we introduced Smart Match. We then unveiled more details on our next generation matchmaking system at E3, and since then we’ve heard you would like to hear more about it. Here are the top three things gamers should know about the Xbox One revolutionary matchmaking system called Smart Match .
Smart Match Finds the Perfect Players for the Perfect game.
Smart Match on Xbox One is completely reengineered for a new generation of gaming – using advanced algorithms to pair players based on skill, language, and now reputation. It’s smarter, faster and optimized to help you play with exactly the people you want, when you want. The advanced party system goes far beyond the beacons of Xbox 360, which was limited to people you already knew. Helping you discover and connect easily with players is now central to the experience. In addition, for the first time, games will be able to share player stats with Xbox Live and each other; to learn, evolve, and provide you with the best possible matchmaking available.
The results? Titles have the ability to match you with other players based on reputation (which we will be talking more about in a post tomorrow), skill, language, age, and even your specific gameplay style. You won’t find yourself in way over your head but you’ll always have a good challenge.
With Smart Match, you can do whatever you want while Xbox One finds your perfect match. This means that less popular multiplayer modes and maps that have traditionally taken a long time to find players suddenly become playable. Because Snap mode is a core feature of Xbox One that lets you do two things at once, you no longer have to wait in lobbies while Xbox Live is matchmaking for you. One friend can even set up matches for your whole party.
While Xbox Live is matchmaking, you’re untethered and free to do what you want, like watch TV or check out your favorite website or apps while waiting for your next game. If you’re playing digital games, you can even play one game while Smart Match prepares a second. This freedom to break out of waiting in lobbies and do whatever you want is what separates Xbox One from systems that don’t have a way to instantly switch between tasks.
After you or a party member inputs the criteria for your perfect game, do something more fun than waiting; it’s up to you. Play another game, find some new downloadable content, or jump on Reddit. Take yourself as many touch points away from the matchmaking process as you can and you still don’t need to worry about finding your way back. Once Xbox One is done finding your perfect match, it will prompt you with a simple toast—no matter where you are or what you’re doing—so you can jump straight into playing.

Xbox One.
Xbox One.

Xbox One RGB Limited (TV) Vs. RGB Full (PC)
Your Xbox One should auto-detect the correct setting -- but you can of course alter the settings to pick other modes.
The choice of RGB Limited vs. RGB Full depends on what kind of set you have. The full RGB color range feature is primarily designed for PC monitors. If you're using it on a regular TV screen or home theater projector, you may notice that your display's black levels look "crushed" resulting in an overly dark picture that lacks some of the details. It's easier to see in-game than when looking at the menus. Boot up Ryse, for example. You'll notice that using RGB Full on a standard HDTV will result in detail in the shows being lost -- eg, Marius's shield may not show all the bumpy detail you'd usually see. In the end, it's all up to preference (even when using a PC monitor). Full may look more vibrant with better black levels -- or you may find that on your particular monitor, you're missing out on some detail (even after calibrating your settings).
As with a lot of settings -- bigger numbers, more filters, and more features enabled don't necessarily mean a better picture. Go with what looks best in your eyes. You can switch back and forth between the settings menu and a game to find the optimal setting for you.

Fallout 4 review.
By Arthur Gies on November 09, 2015 at 8:00am.
Fallout 4 is too big for me to tell you even a fraction of all there is to say about it.
Its user interface is often too opaque, and at times Fallout 4 has some of the same technical issues as Bethesda's previous games, from strange AI quirks to performance hitches and actual hard locks of the software. It's frequently unforgiving. And occasionally, despite a next-gen visual overhaul, its human characters still look a little terrifying. I'm not nearly as big a fan of the Diamond City radio DJ as I was of Three Dog in Fallout 3.
And all of that matters just enough for me to feel obligated to say it before I explain how, after more than 60 hours of Fallout 4 in seven days, the only thing stopping me from going back into it is taking this time, right now, to tell you about the game.
Fallout 4's Skills and abilities are considerably streamlined.
Like every Fallout game, Fallout 4 places you in the shoes of a fish out of water, thrown into the wasteland remains of a nuclear post-apocalypse. Before the bombs fell, some citizens were able to find shelter within the Vaults, massive, hyper-advanced underground cities designed to withstand the end of the world. You play as a survivor from Vault 111, who, through circumstances I should best leave unelaborated, finds himself transported 200 years into the future and separated from his family.
Ostensibly, Fallout 4 is an RPG — those familiar with the genre will immediately comprehend the game's SPECIAL system, which stands for Strength, Perception, Endurance, Charisma, Intelligence, Agility and Luck.
While this is lifted directly from previous Fallout games, Fallout 4 is considerably streamlined in the way that the player character's abilities are managed. Each SPECIAL ability has 10 skills attached to it, and each skill requires a progressively higher rank in that ability to unlock. When you level up, you have a single point, which you can use to unlock an available skill, or to increase one of your SPECIALs. Granted, the change is initially intimidating — available perks and SPECIAL skills are shown together on a giant poster, listing every perk available on a grid.
An Alternate Future.
Fallout has a history, and that history never changes. From its inception in the '90s, that history has played a key role in charting the course of the Fallout universe in countless small ways. When did the bombs fall to begin the Great War? Who are The Enclave, and how did they become so powerful? Where did the Brotherhood of Steel come from, and why are there super mutants anyway? Answers to all these questions, and more, can be found in our timeline.
Still, after a few levels, it felt like a much a simpler way to play Fallout. At first, I missed the multiple layers and point systems present in Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas . I felt like Fallout 4 gave me less room to focus with my character, to determine his build and pursue it. The new skill system feels more general, more haphazard and do-what-you-want.
But after allowing it time to breathe, I didn't find myself playing Fallout 4 any differently in the moment than I did every other Bethesda game of the last decade. I snuck around, unlocking anything anyone had the temerity to try to close off, attacking enemies from afar. And the openness of the new skill system allowed me to hold onto skill points after leveling to use them as whim struck.
Bigger changes are reserved for VATS, or the "Vault-Tec Assisted Targeting System." In Fallout 3 and New Vegas , hitting the left bumper on your controller would freeze time completely, allowing you to target specific enemies and their weak spots using a number-driven system of probabilities and critical hit rolls. And while the latter elements are still present, the safety of frozen time is nowhere to be found. VATS now slows time down to a crawl instead, which is still useful, mind, but not godlike in its broad, ass-saving applications.
Even with that change, Fallout 4 feels familiar out in the Commonwealth, Fallout's alternate-history catch-all merging of the New England states that most prominently features Massachusetts and Boston. Except that Fallout 4 's shooting and movement make it feel like a functional, competent shooter now.
Competency shouldn't be a bullet point for a game's store page, but it was jarring to actually enjoy the gunplay in Fallout 4 after trudging through the controls in literally every other game Bethesda has made. Functional used to be the watch-word, and it's been replaced by something that can actually be fun. Of course, skill shots aren't always possible, and weapons still have stats that determine their effectiveness, accuracy, recoil and the like — especially now that you can modify literally every piece of gear in the game.
Bugs and glitches.
If the glitches that have come to exist like David Foster Wallace footnotes on every Bethesda open-world release have infuriated you beyond all reason, have ruined your ability to take any joy in its games, you may want to exercise caution. Multiple editors experienced full game freezes, though thankfully without the console locking up in turn using pre-release copies of Fallout 4. I found myself stuck on geometry a couple of times when I jumped somewhere I very clearly wasn't supposed to be. Anecdotally, the also game seemed to perform slightly worse over time, and benefited from a restart every now and again.
These issues applied on both PS4 and Xbox One. The PC version performed well with recommended specs, but we experienced major issues running the game on a 3D monitor. These are at least in part likely to be uncommon issues that pop up for a small group of people, and a number of performance problems were mitigated by pre-release patches on both Xbox One and PS4. We'll be monitoring the situation in the meantime.
Fallout 3 had crafting of a sort. The limited schematic system from that game has been replaced entirely with a modular system for weapons that allows you to take a base part and make completely different tools for your wasteland survival efforts. This ranges from the predictable, like scopes and clip sizes, to more fundamental changes. For example, Fallout's classic laser and plasma weapons all have the same root — whether they're pistols or rifles depends on what you build around that base.
In turn, Bethesda leverages this into a full loot system that resembles action RPGs like Diablo, replete with prefixes and suffixes. And there are noted, legendary versions of enemies in the game that drop unique gear that can also be modded. This applies to clothing and armor, too.
In a game that feels decidedly cruel and capricious, the loot and gear was a lifesaver. More than Fallout 3 and even New Vegas , Fallout 4 killed me with very little warning an awful lot. In fact, death seemed like the game's way of telling me I was either somewhere I just wasn't powerful enough to be, or that I needed to look at my gear and reevaluate my priorities.
Once I remembered that Fallout is unforgiving and that I could save whenever I wanted — even in conversations! — I went into problem-solving mode like I hadn't ever felt empowered to in a Bethesda open-world game before. I found it easy to lose 15 or 20 minutes at a workbench in Fallout 4 fiddling with my weapons, trying to come up with just the right combination of parts to suit my playstyle, and my available resources.
This is the double-edged sword of crafting in Fallout 4 . All the crap found in Fallout's world is now not just junk; it's materials to make mods for your stuff. This adds a great incentive and sense of reward to finding all sorts of things out in the wasteland. It also adds a sense of obligation to picking up every piece of trash left in the post-apocalypse, and there's only so much you can carry.
I found myself returning to my chosen base of operations about every hour or so to dump off the crap I had accumulated, which, to be fair, Fallout 4 handles relatively well. You don't have to break items down manually — it all just sits in a pile, and as you're creating new mods your trash is automatically converted to the needed parts, assuming you have the needed materials. But in a series that's always struggled somewhat with carrying capacity, it was just one more thing to have to think about once the game informed me for the 27th time that I was overloaded and couldn't run or fast-travel.
I used those materials for my gear, but you might use them for something else entirely; Fallout 4 also introduces a fully developed settlement component that allows you to 1) take over specific spaces, 2) attract settlers whose happiness is determined by the resources you make available to them, and 3) clear away most trash and debris and build complicated structures with elements powered by generators that can in turn be controlled via chainable switches.
Bethesda has essentially lifted the construction element of modern PC survival titles nearly whole cloth and dropped it into Fallout 4 . It can be a little intimidating, and some of the interface is obtuse — if you're not paying total attention to each tutorial early on, I predict you'll be running to Google to find out how to, say, run a wire from a generator to a powered turret.
The addition of such a major, time-sucking element is impressive both because of how well it works and because Fallout 4 would not otherwise be lacking for things to do. Without the weapon modding and settlement bits, Fallout 4 would still be an intimidatingly large open-world game that takes the fundamentals of Bethesda's open-world formula and grows them all the hell up.
There are complicated internal politics and conflicts happening within each city — peace always seems fragile, and while there are factions, the term feels reductive here. The social hierarchy of the Commonwealth is far more nuanced than in previous Bethesda titles. Each city has a relationship with the other outposts, and generally, characters have relationships that link them to more than one place. It's not as simple as jumping through a checklist of hoops to do some quests — though that's also available for each. Instead, there are difficult relationships between them. There are no easy allies, and no easy moral positions to align yourself with.
Even companions see a deeper sense of development and interconnectedness. When you're not traveling with a companion, you can send them back to a specific settlement. And when you take on a different companion, they almost always interact with your previous partner in a way that reveals a relationship there.
Bethesda leverages this dynamic, along with the strongest writing it's ever managed, to present really difficult choices in the latter half of the game's "story." In turn, it's exponentially more complicated than the Enclave vs. Brotherhood of Steel narrative from Fallout 3 or even the mangled amnesia plot line of New Vegas . It dawned on me fairly early into Fallout 4 that my choices could have unexpected consequences that wouldn't be clear till later. As I approached the last third of the game, I agonized over trying to do the right thing — or even knowing what the right thing was. Fallout 4 played enough with my expectations of its fiction to keep me guessing, and its endgame is tense and fantastic for it.
All of that was great, but it's not where I wanted to spend most of my time. Fallout 4 continues the series' impressively effective apocalypse tourism. My favorite times in Fallout 4 felt like an archaeological expedition through an alternate history. The Commonwealth, like the Capital Wasteland before it, is a character all on its own, full of black humor and tragedy. There are so many stories everywhere, whether in Bethesda's macabre but impeccable set dressing or in more fleshed-out incidents that feel like nothing so much as post-nuclear ghost stories. Fallout 4 feels like wandering through a giant, haunted city, and I want to know every secret it has.
Bethesda's open-world strengths have always differed from its contemporaries in that focus on world-building and a sense of place above all else. Fallout 4 has all the ambiance and history that made its predecessors such wonderful places to get lost for hours at a time, with a much more coherent set of stories within it. That Bethesda has integrated a major building and crafting tool while finally building a great-playing game almost feels like a bonus.
Bethesda's games tend to be giant and ambitious, and have in turn routinely experienced technical issues at launch and beyond. While some bugs are to be expected in such large games, occasionally these issues exceed the general public willingness to put up with a little wonkiness in exchange for the next big thing. As such, this review will remain provisional until we're able to ascertain an idea of Fallout 4's launch state.
Fallout 4 was reviewed using an Xbox One retail disc-based copy provided by Bethesda. You can find additional information about Polygon's ethics policy here.

Fallout 4 review update one.
Fallout 4 most certainly has bugs. In fact, this was specifically mentioned in the introduction to our review — in the second paragraph, even. And this is something worth noting for players who have no patience for that kind of thing. But the general experience with Fallout 4 both here at Polygon and at large appears to be a much more stable release than previous games from Bethesda. After a full month of observation and hundreds of hours across various Polygon staffers with little in the way of major technical problems — and fewer technical problems than seen in a number of other major open-world titles this year — we feel confident removing our provisional status from the Fallout 4 review.

Microsoft Xbox One S review:
Xbox One S is the best Xbox you might not want to buy.
Xbox One S is the best Xbox yet.
The Xbox One S is the most feature-filled console Microsoft has ever made, but that doesn't mean you should buy it.

The Good The Xbox One S is a slick looking game console that's 40 percent smaller than the original and ditches the infamously gigantic power brick. It can display 4K video from streaming services and Ultra HD Blu-rays, and supports HDR contrast on video and games. The updated controller works with other Bluetooth devices, too.
The Bad 4K, Ultra HD Blu-ray and HDR settings only work with newer TVs, and may require some trial and error. The updated controller feels cheaper than its predecessor. Project Scorpio, the more powerful Xbox One successor, arrives in late 2017.
The Bottom Line The Xbox One S is the console Microsoft should have delivered three years ago, but there's little reason to upgrade if you already own the original box.

CNET Gaming Consoles Microsoft Xbox One S.
Update 8/4/16: Several spec teardown reports have uncovered slight difference in the graphical hardware performance of Xbox One S. Specifically, Xbox One S has a small GPU clock increase of 914 MHz from 853 MHz and an ESRAM bandwidth increase of 219 GB/s from 204 GB/s. These bumps are only noticeable in-game in a small number of situations. In fact, they exist only as an bonus side effect of Microsoft ensuring HDR content performs without a hitch.
This is more like it.
The Xbox One S is the version of the console that Microsoft should've first released back in 2013 instead of the lumbering beast that we got. It's better in a number of ways, making it even more of a worthy alternative to Sony's PlayStation 4.
Xbox One S offers a far more attractive enclosure, options for a bigger hard drive, a slightly redesigned controller and some video perks for owners of 4K TVs. It starts at $300, £250 or AU$400 for the 500GB version; $350, £300 or AU$500 for a 1TB model; and $400, £350 or AU$549 for 2TB.
That last model is available to buy as of today in the US (and includes the vertical stand that otherwise costs $20 when purchased separately in the US), while those with the smaller hard drives will be available later in August, bundled with games such as Madden 17 and Halo. (Additional bundles will follow later in the year -- including a pricier 2TB Gears of War 4 version in October -- and may vary by region.)
Sounds like a slam dunk, right? Unfortunately, it's never that simple. The One S doesn't get an across-the-board "buy it now" recommendation for two reasons. First off, it doesn't deliver huge improvements for anyone who already owns an Xbox One. But more importantly, Microsoft has already promised that the next Xbox -- dubbed Project Scorpio -- will be arriving in late 2017 with with the seriously amped-up graphics and VR-ready hardware that audiences are clamoring for.
When it's all said and done, the Xbox One S should be primarily viewed as a slimmed-down version of the Xbox One that introduces a mildly updated controller and provisions for 4K display. It's not going to warp you into a state-of-the-art gaming experience. Pragmatically, you're probably better off nabbing an older Xbox One, which are now being sold at fire-sale prices. But if you are getting an Xbox One for the first time, have an interest in the bundled games and aren't saving your pennies for 2017's Project Scorpio, the One S is certainly a good all-round gaming and entertainment deal.
What's new in the Xbox One S.
There's a short but significant list of improvements and changes to the Xbox One S.
Smaller, cleaner design: To start, it's 40 percent smaller, which considering its power supply is now internal, is impressive. It's also stark white, with some slick plastic moldings flanking the entirety of the box. I think it's the best-looking Xbox Microsoft has ever designed.
The One S can also stand vertically, too. The 2TB model we received for review packs in a stand. If you buy one of the other models, you can get the stand separately for $20.
4K and HDR video: Xbox One S gets a fairly beefy upgrade on its video capabilities, with 4K resolution (3,840x2,160, or four times as sharp as standard 1080p HDTVs) and HDR (high dynamic range, which is basically enhanced contrast and color). Keep in mind: those features only work on compatible TVs and 4K functionality only works with a small but growing list of compatible video content. 4K can currently be accessed through streaming video services such as Amazon and Netflix (as long as you have the bandwidth to support it and pay for their premium tier) and those new 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs. Certain games, meanwhile, will eventually be able to take advantage of HDR visual improvements, but don't look for PC-like 4K graphics -- the games are merely upscaled to 4K.
So no, you're not getting native 4K gaming out of an Xbox One S. In fact, only a limited number of games will feature HDR and none of them are out yet. They are Gears of War 4, Forza Horizon 3 and 2017's Scalebound.
New controller design: The Xbox One controller has been updated for the S, too. It has a more streamlined top section, better range and textured grips. It can also use Bluetooth to connect, which opens the door for compatibility with other devices -- no more annoying dongles, at least on Bluetooth-compatible PCs.
The One S controller (right), compared with its predecessor.
Unfortunately, I'm not a fan of the new controller's design. It's not a drastic departure from the original, but there's just enough of a change to make it feel cheaper. The plastic textured grips don't feel good the way rubberized ones do, but thankfully the triggers seem unchanged. The D-pad also feels slightly less tactile -- I even noticed differences between two of the new controllers side by side.
IR blaster and receiver: Still present is the IR port for controlling the console with a remote, but the Xbox One S also features an integrated IR blaster to control or power on other devices in the room.
And it still does everything the old Xbox One does: The good news is that you're not losing anything with the Xbox One S compared with its predecessor. Around back the console offers a lot of the same ports as the original Xbox One, though noticeably absent is a dedicated Kinect port. You can still attach Kinect to the Xbox One S, you'll just need a special $40 (!) adapter. Either way, the omission of a Kinect port should give you an idea of how that peripheral is regarded at Microsoft HQ.
HDMI-in and -out ports are still there, so you can still make use of the Xbox One's live TV integration if that's something that appeals to you, but I never found it overly useful.
Suffice it to say, the One S plays all existing Xbox One games, and a growing list of Xbox 360 games. It also includes all of the encouraging software improvements Microsoft has made over the past few years, including the redesigned interface, support for the Cortana digital assistant (using a microphone headset), compatibility with the Windows Store and, soon, additional cross-play options with Windows PC gamers on certain titles.
4K and HDR scorecard.
I want to personally thank the Xbox One S for introducing me to the hot mess that is the world of 4K and HDR formats. I considered myself fairly fluent in the language of home theater, but I was bewildered at the insane of amount of granularity and confusion that the format is currently plagued with.
