Xbox One locales FAQ. This page provides answers to frequently asked questions about Xbox One locales. Frequently asked questions. How do I set the language and location on my Xbox One? During the initial setup of your new Xbox console, you select your language and location. With the August 2016 update, location is no longer dependent on the language you choose. After setup, can I change language and location later? After setup of your new Xbox One console, you can change your language and location through Settings . A system restart will be required. For more information, see Xbox One system settings. Is the Xbox One console location different than the Xbox Store location? No. Xbox One will always use your chosen console location. This information gets passed to the Xbox Live service to show the correct marketplace, offers, recommendations, and so on. For example, if you select France when you set up your console, this gets passed to Xbox Live, and you will see offers and information specific to France. Note Some content and apps may not be available or accessible in some locations. If your console is set to a different location than the one you live in, you may be able to download and install an app from a different market, but you may not be able to use it. That app may be geo-fenced (restricted by physical location, not the console setting) and may prevent you from playing content from another country or region. Will I see the Store in two languages? Possibly. With language and location being separated with the August 2016 update, it's possible to choose a language that is not available in your chosen location. The result will be a mix of languages: your chosen console language for things like headings and buttons, and a "fallback" store language for the names and descriptions of items in the Store. For example, if you choose a location of France and a language of French (France), you'll see everything in French. But, if you choose a location of France and a language of Japanese, you'll see most of the screens in Japanese, but some of the Store information in French. What happens if I set my Xbox One console location differently than my Xbox account? You will be shown information for the location and language set on your console. Your Xbox account locale is not used to show Store information. Do I need to migrate my account when moving to a different country or region? No. You can simply change your console language and location anytime you want. Account migration is not required with Xbox One. For example: You move from Germany to France. If you change your console location to France and your language to French (France), your entire experience will change from German to French, even though your Xbox account locale was originally Germany. As long as you have a French billing account and a valid payment option, you will be able to purchase content from the French Store. Note It is important to keep in mind that if you have local currency stored in your account when you switch console locales, you will lose access to that currency. How is the voice model selected and enabled in Xbox One? When you select a supported language during setup of your new Xbox One console, an appropriate voice model will be enabled. For example, if you select French (France) during initial setup, a French (France) voice model will be enabled. For a list of voice-supported locales, see Xbox One Feature Availability. You can change your spoken language in Settings . For more information, see Xbox One system settings. What about Cortana? When Cortana is enabled, Kinect voice commands that start with "Xbox" become "Hey Cortana" instead. The Spoken language setting isn't available when Cortana is on—Cortana depends on language and location and doesn't use this setting. I can only sign in to my console if my Xbox account locale is for one of the officially supported countries or regions, correct? Not correct. You can sign in to your Xbox One console if you have an Xbox account from any country or region where Xbox account creation is supported. For example, customers in Egypt can sign in to their consoles using their Egypt Xbox accounts. Note It is important to keep in mind that Xbox Support and warranties are only available in Xbox One-supported countries and regions. How is the locale set in the Xbox App for Xbox One? The Xbox App uses the locale (country/region and language) that you set on your device. For example, if you set the locale of your Windows Phone 10 and your iPad to the French language and the country of France, the Xbox App will be French. When connected to your console, the Xbox App switches to use whatever language your console is set to use. Does the Xbox One console have to physically be in an officially supported country or region to get system updates? No. Your Xbox One console can get system updates anywhere in the world, as long as it's connected to the Internet. Note It is important to keep in mind that Xbox Support and warranties are only available in Xbox One-supported countries and regions. What happens if my billing address doesn't match my console's locale? In that case, you will not be able to purchase content. You must have a valid billing address and payment option that matches your console locale. For example, if you are in France and set your console location to France, you will see French Store information. However, if your billing address is in Germany, you will not be able to purchase content because you must have a valid payment option connected to a French billing address. If I purchase a game in one country or region, can I play it in another country or region? Yes. There is no playback restriction on games purchased and downloaded. For example, if you purchase and download a game in one country and then move to another country where the game isn’t available, you can still play the game that you downloaded. However, you would not be able to redownload the game you purchased, as it would not be available for you to download in the Store. What happens if I buy a Microsoft gift card in Germany in euros and add it to my account, and then move to the United Kingdom? Does it convert from euros to British pounds? Balances are not converted from one currency to another. You must spend the value of the currency in which it was purchased. You will have to buy another Microsoft gift card when you move to another country or region, because the balance you have in one currency will not work in another marketplace. Xbox One Kinect Voice Commands and Languages Get Full Details. The Xbox On command is only supported in English, French, and German. After confirming that the Xbox One Kinect voice commands are region-locked, Microsoft has offered some more details about the different languages supported in various territories, as well as a list of certain commands supported by the peripheral. Each Xbox One is bundled alongside a new and improved Kinect sensor which allows console owners to use their voices and command the device to do all sorts of different things. Now, ahead of the console's debut on November 22 in 13 countries around the world, Microsoft has just posted a handy little guide concerning voice commands. “With Kinect voice recognition, you can control and interact with your Xbox One console by using voice commands. To engage your Xbox console, just say ‘Xbox.’ A list of available commands appears on the screen. Then, say any of the commands that appear in the list. For example, say ‘Bing’ to search using Bing,” the company said on its website. Microsoft also revealed the different languages that will be available in various countries. Bear in mind that, thanks to the region locking, commands in other languages than the native one won't work on that console (for example English orders in Germany or France). United States - English. United Kingdom - English. The "Xbox On" command will only work in three different languages: English, French, and German. Languages supported by "Xbox on" Command. UK to get fully-functioning Xbox One voice controls at launch. But other countries won't. Sorry Australia. By Tom Phillips Published 30/08/2013. Xbox One's Kinect voice controls will be fully available at launch in the UK, but the same cannot be said of all launch countries. The console will arrive this November in 13 "tier one" territories, but just five will get specific voice commands such as "Xbox On": the UK, US, Canada, France and Germany. 10 countries will get at least some voice features, Microsoft director of product planning Albert Penello explained in a post on NeoGAF, while eight languages and regional variations will initially be supported. At launch you'll be able to choose from the following language options: English (UK and US), French, Spanish (Mexico and Spain), Italian, German and Portuguese. Exact details on which voice features will be available in each country is "complicated", Penello admitted. "It's been an education for me as I've been looking into it. "There is no way that I could do justice to it in a post, so the marketing team is working on a chart that gives clarity on what locales, languages, and voice features are available in each country. Trying to write it down would be confusing. Stay tuned for a more detailed explanation." Games in this article. Update: Microsoft has clarified that the delay specifically affects the "Xbox On" voice command, which will only work in five markets at launch. A spokesperson provided the following statement to Gamespot: "Our vision is to bring conversational voice control and voice search to every country where we sell Xbox. At Xbox One launch, we will offer voice control in 10 of our 13 launch markets, with eight total languages: English US, English UK, French, Spanish MX, Spanish ES, Italian, German, and Portuguese. There will be some voice experience variations in different markets at launch; the 'Xbox On' voice command will only be available in five markets (United States, United Kingdom, Canada, France, and Germany) and will come to others in the near future. There are many complexities associated with delivering a great voice experience around the world, and we're working hard to add more voice features and more countries; we'll share more details in the future." Original story follows: While we're still waiting on a firm release date for the Xbox One, we now know that the system's much-touted voice command capabilities will be limited to select markets at launch. Spotted by Gamespot, a listing on Xbox.com notes that the console's new Kinect-enabled voice commands will only be available in the US, UK, Canada, France, and Germany when it ships sometime in November. That leaves customers in the other 8 launch regions — including Australia, Mexico, Italy, and others — out of luck until an unspecified later date. While the exact cause for the staggered rollout is not mentioned, earlier this week Microsoft head of product development Albert Penello discussed language localization as the primary cause for the system's delayed availability in select markets. With the aid of the new and improved Kinect sensor, many of the Xbox One's software can be controlled by simple voice commands, including the ability to power on the system, switch to different programs, and launch apps. In order to make the feature available in all available in the primary languages of each country, including the nuances of regional dialects. We've reached out to Microsoft for comment. Voice-Control Features Key Reason for Xbox One Regional Delays. Extra language localisation work blamed for postponed launches, not supply issues. The extra language localisation work Xbox One requires is the key reason for the console’s delay across Russia and seven European countries, not supply problems, reports O XM . “I think people are using the way [voice] works on Xbox 360, which was an accessory we built five years after release, as how it's going to work here,” Microsoft's head of product development, Albert Penello, told OXM. “But it's so much more elegant and so much more integrated, and in many ways it's a lot faster and more convenient. Whereas on Xbox 360 it's a lesser version of doing the thing you're used to doing on your controller. “This is the part of the internet that's frustrating, because everybody wants to assume there's a [units volume] issue. And yet I'm showing real hardware here at Gamescom – a real, final, retail kit. Which I have yet to see my friends show me. “People assume there's a volume issue which in fact there isn't. You're actually seeing pre-orders pop back up now because we're able allocate the countries' volumes back in. It's there, the problem is localisation. And once people see the system and how integral it is, it's not just text integration.” Penello went on to reiterate the Xbox One is a region-free console, using Switzerland as an example of a country where gamers could import a console and not experience any problems. “In regions like Switzerland where people speak German and French, they can get a German or French console,” said Penello. “It'll work fine. They can log in to their marketplace, use their language, we don't geo-fence Live or any of the content any more. We don't have official language support – but the console still works.” The differences between Swiss German and German notwithstanding, with German, French, and Italian being three of the four official languages of Switzerland and the Xbox One launching in Germany, France and Italy as planned, it does seem odd Switzerland is missing out. Kinect speech recognition for Xbox 360 and Bing Voice Search is currently officially supported in Switzerland wit h French and German . On August 14 Microsoft announced the Xbox One launch would be trimmed fro m 21 countries to 13 , with the console’s official arrival in Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Netherlands, Norway, Russia, Sweden, and Switzerland postponed until 2014. In a stateme nt the company highlighted factors like additional voice and language support and country-specific content partnerships as key factors that were determining launch timings. Earlier today a leak suggested the Xbox One may be launched in the U S on November 8 .
