Best VR Headset: Which one should you buy? We look at the world of VR to help you decide which is the best VR headset for you. Now that the Oculus Rift, HTC Vive and PlayStation VR are all finally here, it’s time to decide which headset to put your money on this Christmas or if you’re thinking about taking the plunge in 2017. PC owners can choose between Oculus Rift and the HTC Vive – the most advanced headsets on the market. Both are seriously powerful devices, but they need equally powerful PCs to run. For those unwilling, or unable, to drop the exorbitant amounts required to upgrade their PCs to a suitable specification, Playstation VR will cost you far less with only a PS4 console and PlayStation Camera required to get stuck in. Those are the key contenders then, but which is the best VR headset? Best VR Headset – When are they coming out? All three headsets are out now, available at wildly different price points which we’ve listed below for your convenience. Video: Watch Evan Kypreos unbox the Oculus Rift. Best VR Headset – How much do they cost? The HTC Vive is now on sale for £689 in the UK and $799 in the US , making it the most expensive headset available. The Vive ships with two earbuds, a Vive Linkbox and two wireless controllers required to use the headset. In addition, you will also receive a trio of games that showcase the capabilities of Valve’s headset: Job Simulator: The 2050 Archives, Tilt Brush, and Fantastic Contraption. Oculus Rift costs £499 in the UK, or $599 for US gamers . The initial purchase will bag you the headset with built-in headphones, mic, sensor, and a bundled Xbox One controller. There’s also a small remote with wrist strap to let you tweak volume and select options. The Oculus Touch controllers, motion controllers that are designed for VR, won’t ship until later this year and cost extra. Finally, Playstation VR currently retails for £350 in the UK and $399 in the US , making it the cheapest of the lot. However, this doesn’t include the Move camera, which is required, nor any Move controllers. These controllers aren’t required, however. You can find PSVR in a selection of bundles complete with a few games, move controllers and a PS Camera, given you’re willing to shop around. Best VR Headset – System Requirements. Those eager to pick up Oculus Rift or HTC Vive will need a pretty beefy machine if they hope to run anything. Sign up for the newsletter. Get news, competitions and special offers direct to your inbox. The HTC Vive recommends the following before you get started: – Intel i5-4590 / AMD FX 8350 equivalent or greater. – HDMI 1.4 or DisplayPort 1.2 or newer. – 1x USB 2.0 or greater port. – Windows 7 SP1 or newer. Oculus recommends the below specs if you want to have the “full Oculus Rift experience”: – Nvidia GTX 970/AMD 290 equivalent or better. – Intel i5-4590 equivalent or better. – 8GB RAM or more. – HDMI 1.3 video output. – 2x USB 3.0 ports. – Windows 7 SP1 or newer. You will also require a decent amount of space if you plan on dedicating yourself to VR, with the Vive in particular needing substantial space due to the two paddles. If you aren’t familiar with PC gaming this probably sounds daunting, but you can read our Best Gaming PC: PC Building Guide for a full breakdown of how to build the perfect gaming PC. In our experience so far, it’s best to have a PC that exceeds the minimum recommendations. For example, an Nvidia GeForce GTX 980 Ti provides a much smoother, more reliable experience than the 970 recommended by both HTC and Oculus. Playstation VR requires a PS4 console, Playstation Camera, and a couple of Move controllers for certain titles such as Job Simulator and Batman Arkham VR. Best VR Headset – Design. Oculus Rift has seen a number of iterations since its original design, and now feels more compact and accessible, with only a single 4-metre wire protruding from the left of the headset. Oculus has spent a lot of time refining the design, which now feels incredibly comfortable to wear, to the extent that keeping it on for hours won’t cause you any problems. The Rift is decorated with discrete panels that effectively hide the inner workings, allowing you to customise it with the lenses you find most comfortable. You can also adjust the interpupillary distance (IPD) of the optics, meaning you can change the headset display to accommodate the positioning of your eyes. The HTC Vive has also been through several redesigns, and is now made to be more user-friendly and compact than ever before. Players can fully customise the interchangeable foam inserts and nose gaskets to allow for all face shapes and glasses. Each display has been significantly improved, offering higher clarity and resolution than the initial development kit. In terms of new features, the HTC Vive now includes a front-facing camera, giving you the opportunity to interact with the outside world without removing the headset. Playstation VR aims to imitate the sleek, black design made famous by Sony’s console with the addition of LED panels reminiscent of the Dualshock 4’s light bar. Sony’s headset simply fits around your head instead of using an adjustable strap, and feels a little tighter as a result. This is still adjustable, but may require a little bit of fine-tuning. Much like the Rift and Vive, you can tweak the headset lenses to ensure they’re perfectly positioned for your own eyesight. Best VR Headset – Specs Comparison. The Oculus Rift features an OLED dual-display supporting a 2,160 x 1,200 at an impressive 90Hz. Such a display allows for rapid head movement with no blurring. You will be able to play a variety of Oculus games using the headset and an Xbox One controller, which come bundled with each unit. The Rift also sports an accelerometer, gyroscope, magnetometer, and 360-degree positional tracking capabilities. When combined these are used to constantly track your head movements across all software. HTC Vive also features an OLED display capable of running at the same 2,160 x 1,200 resolution and 90Hz. There’s also a built-in front-facing camera which can add outside world elements into a VR setting. The Vive is littered with sensors which are monitored by what the company calls Lighthouse base stations. The base stations emit lasers that track your movements and the controllers in your hands. This way your position can be tracked within a 15×15 foot space. In a nutshell, this will let you walk around and interact with the virtual world, something which no other VR headset currently offers. However, Oculus’ Head of Worldwide studios, Jason Rubin, recently revealed the Oculus is also capable of room-scaling. Talking to Polygon, he said: “We have the tech ability to provide room scale. Our tech doesn’t preclude that. At some point we’ll demo that. “We don’t believe that the consumer has the space in general. Has the commercial viable space of the 15-by-15 foot square.” Could we see whole-body, Vive-like movement tracking on the Oculus Rift in the future? If Rubin’s words are anything to go by, it seems highly likely. Playstation VR is easily the weakest of the three, and Sony isn’t afraid to admit that, saying that Oculus Rift provides a “better” virtual reality experience. Sony’s headset operates at a 1,920 x RGB x 1,080 resolution on a 5.7-inch screen split across both eyes. However, it also runs at an impressive 120Hz, compared to the Rift and Vive’s 90Hz. You can also use Playstation VR’s cinematic mode to play all PS4 games with three levels of zoom, and can be used to watch Netflix and Amazon Instant Video. Essentially, Sony’s headset isn’t as powerful as the Rift or Vive, but should be more convenient for existing PS4 owners. Best VR Headset – Controllers. Those interested in Oculus Rift will have two distinct types of controller input: Oculus Touch and traditional gamepads. The Oculus Touch controllers won’t be available until later in 2016, but aim to give you the feeling that your hands are actually in the game. In the mean time, Oculus recently partnered with Microsoft, so all Oculus Rift units come bundled with an Xbox One controller, making it easier to jump into games once you’re set up. As a result of this partnership, the Rift natively supports Windows 10. Plus, you’ll be able to stream Xbox One titles to your Oculus Rift in a virtual living environment. The Oculus Touch controllers sport a “half-moon” design which places the analogue sticks under your thumbs and triggers under your forefingers and middle fingers. All of these contain pressure sensors that monitor your presence even when you aren’t pressing anything. By squeezing the triggers you can make a fist, letting you pick up objects in the game world. It’s a fantastic addition for immersive VR, and we’re more than impressed with the outcome. The HTC Vive controllers are somewhat similar to the Oculus Touch, but are now completely wireless and rechargeable. Each pad is fitted with textured buttons and grip pads that all support haptic feedback. This makes interaction in virtual worlds far more natural and easier to perform. The controllers are bent at a 45-degree angle so they naturally curve around your palms, placing all buttons and gestures within immediate reach. Underneath your thumb is an adapted version of the haptic feedback found in Valve’s Steam Controller. Unlike the Oculus Touch, the Vive’s controllers come with the headset so you can start using them as soon as you get your hands on HTC’s device. Playstation VR supports the Dualshock 4 and Playstation Move peripherals. The Move Batons were of an attempt by Sony to develop a motion-control system which, until PSVR, seemed somewhat unsuccesful. Using the batons will allow you to control things using gestures. You don’t need them to use PSVR but they have certainly proven to make the experience more immersive. Best VR Headset – Sound. The HTC Vive will let you plug in a pair of headphones using the jack found on the headset, giving you plenty of freedom to experiment. Otherwise, the headset features full 3D audio, which has been refined over the various iterations. Oculus Rift features an integrated VR audio system engineered to give you an increased sense of space and depth. Headphones are mounted on the side of the headset, making for easy movement and customisation. The headphones themselves don’t look too impressive, but provide clear, immersive audio for VR. You can also use your own headphones too, if that’s your style. Playstation VR boasts 360 degrees of immersive audio using 3D audio technology, and, much like the Dualshock 4, will provide support for a number of audio peripherals. Best VR Headset – Games. A number of games, both multiplatform and exclusive, have been announced for all three devices. Oculus has invested $10 million dollars into indie game development to create more unique titles. Studios such as Harmonix and Insomniac Games are already working on exclusive games for the headset, so expect them in the near future. Below you can find just a few of the games available on Oculus Rift: Chronos – an atmospheric RPG from Gunfire Games Edge of Nowhere – an Arctic survival game from Insomniac Games Eve Valkyrie – the flagship Oculus Rift title from CCP Damaged Core – a futuristic first-person shooter from High Voltage VR Sports Challenge – exactly what it sounds like from Sanzaru Games Esper – a puzzle game set in 1975 from Coatsink AirMechVR – bringing tabletop warfare to life by Carbon Games Lucky’s Tale – a colourful platforming adventure by Playful Corp. You can check out a more extensive list here, including 30 of the launch games. The HTC Vive launched with a variety of intriguing tech demos and small titles aiming to show what the device is capable of while also giving indie devs a chance to strut their stuff. Elite Dangerous was made available as a launch title for Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, coming as a free update to existing players. Cloudhead Games’ The Gallery: Call of Darkseed is one of the launch titles for HTC Vive. The fantasy-adventure game follows a reclusive protagonist on a dangerous quest to obtain an ancient device called The Machine. The Vive also comes with a trio of free games that showcase the capabilities of Valve’s headset: Job Simulator: The 2050 Archives, Tilt Brush, and Fantastic Contraption. Playstation VR also had a wide selection of interesting titles at launch. The company has confirmed that over 230 developers are signed up to develop games for VR. Tekken 7, Gran Turismo Sport, and Resident Evil 7 are just some of the games on the way. PlayStation VR has seen a range of fun titles since launching earlier this year, with more to come before the end of 2016. Some of the highlights include Batman Arkham VR, Rez Infinite and Robinson: The Journey. You also have the likes of Farpoint and Resident Evil 7 to come in 2017. Best VR Headset – Summary. As it stands, you can’t go wrong with any of the three major headsets. All of them offer an impressively immersive experience regardless of price, with exclusive titles aplenty to show off to your friends and family. Below we’ve included a few short snippets from our individual reviews of each headset, to give you an idea of what we thought after weeks of rigorous testing. PlayStation VR Verdict: “PlayStation VR is simply the best virtual reality headset you can buy right now. It’s cheap while not compromising on performance and quality. The headset is simply stunning and incredibly comfortable to wear, and the games already available are some of the best VR experiences I’ve ever played.” “The Oculus Rift is a triumph for every tech head – this isn’t just a step towards the future, it is an almighty leap. It’s by no means perfect, but it’s already fulfilling a healthy fraction of its ultimate potential.” HTC Vive Verdict: “The HTC Vive’s far more immersive than the Oculus Rift – so much so that you forgive the pixelated screen and irritating software foibles. But if you plan to immerse yourself in a virtual world while sitting down, the Rift makes a lot more sense. It’s not as impressive, but it still offers a fantastic experience, if you can avoid the games that might make you reach for a bucket.” Which headset is your favourite? Let us know in the comments below! Microsoft's new VR headset could bridge HoloLens, Windows and Xbox (hands-on) Acer may be the first to start shipping an inexpensive, quality headset for Windows developers -- but this $300 device is no HoloLens. Acer's opaque, VR-style headset for Windows developers. Microsoft doesn't have its own VR headset. It has five -- last year, Acer, Asus, Dell, HP and Lenovo all signed on to make wearable screens for Windows PCs. There's just one thing: Microsoft insists that these five devices aren't virtual reality headsets. They're "mixed reality." This week, as Acer starts shipping the first developer-oriented headset, we're finally coming to a full understanding of what that actually means. During the 2017 Game Developers Conference here in San Francisco, we got an early hands-on look at what it's like to use Windows on a headset that isn't built for games, and spoke to Microsoft HoloLens team leader Alex Kipman about the vision behind these new headsets. (Hint: Xbox is a big part.) Mixed reality = cameras and tracking? Microsoft's idea of mixed reality is an umbrella covering practically everything from augmented to virtual reality. And that's the way it should be, according to Kipman. "What happens when your VR headset of tomorrow has the ability to see the real world and put holograms on it? The proper term is mixed reality." But these new more affordable Windows mixed reality headsets, like Acer's, don't see the real world quite the way you'd expect. Unlike Microsoft's HoloLens, these devices aren't cordless and don't have see-through visors. They're opaque, like VR headsets, and tether to a Windows PC, or come 2018, an Xbox One or Project Scorpio game console, with a long cord. They cost about $300 (roughly £250 or AU$400 converted). Because they have cameras and "six degrees of freedom" tracking to work without external sensors or markers, like the HoloLens, Microsoft wants you to see them as something special. But many upcoming VR headsets might also have those capabilities. As Kipman admits, by his own definition of mixed reality, the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive are capable of mixed reality, too. He's referring to taking real-life scanned items and putting them in VR, versus taking virtual things and floating them in the everyday world (AR). But as Microsoft's own demo showed us this week, an opaque, VR-style headset can make a lot more sense for a lot more software as of today. Where the company's HoloLens developer kit has a narrow field of view that makes it tough to see even an entire application window at once, much less an entire Windows desktop, that wasn't a problem with Microsoft's VR-style rig. The new headsets will work with HoloLens apps, display Windows Universal Apps, even launch traditional Win32 programs in a single "desktop" window -- and the wider field of view means there's no hunting around the room to find each one. What we didn't see in the opaque headset demo yet: the HoloLens-like ability to place those windows (and virtual 3D objects) onto digital representations of the real world. Microsoft's new headsets aim to share the same software as HoloLens, but without being see-through. With the HoloLens, the headset would map out your room in real time, so you could "pin" windows and objects to surfaces in the real world -- and have them stay in place. The opaque headset let us pin them, but only onto a generic virtual world, not a recreation of our actual room -- which might also be the reason we kept bumping into unseen walls. (We understand Microsoft will add the ability to map out such boundaries, though.) Microsoft's dev kits are targeted at game developers, because to Microsoft that's exactly what these headsets are for. "HoloLens is focused on task workers and enterprise. The affordable headsets starting at $299 are entirely focused on gaming and entertainment," says Kipman. But the apps aren't here yet. For everyday gamers, Vive and Oculus Rift are full of apps that Microsoft's mixed reality headsets won't necessarily be able to access. Microsoft's building a different ecosystem for these, built on what HoloLens already supports. In the meanwhile, as we saw firsthand, users will already be able to stream existing, flatscreen Xbox One games to the headset and play them in their own personal theater. Xbox and future controllers are coming. The headset we tried briefly has a few key features: dual 1,440x1,440-pixel resolution displays refreshing 90 times per second for smooth motion, a flip-up visor (which Kipman says is "clever design," but "not a requirement"), a single cable combining HDMI and USB 3.0, and a standard 3.5mm headset jack. While the prototype wasn't nearly as comfortable, it looks a bit like a PlayStation VR. Maybe that analogy isn't bad, because next year Microsoft plans on connecting mixed reality to its Xbox platform. Both the Xbox One and Scorpio will be compatible. In that sense, Microsoft might be skipping a half-generation for console VR. Kipman says, "We're going to bet on a universal platform that can go from X86 to ARM. Mixed reality experiences that go from HoloLens to PCs. Xbox is no different. It's the same universal platform." Will there be future controllers? "Short answer: yes," says Kipman, but he wasn't ready to reveal anything more. In our demo, we mostly used a Bluetooth-ready Xbox One gamepad to move and teleport through the VR environment, with a keyboard and mouse as backup; if the room is large enough, you can just freely walk around. Microsoft's mixed-reality headsets aren't necessarily like the HoloLens. But for now, they'll be the closest thing PC gamers will be able to easily buy. Unless, of course, Oculus or Valve launch similar products down the road. Microsoft wants its headsets to be interchangeable. Kipman sees the various headsets like monitors: resolution might differ, but any one will work. But, will Microsoft's vision of headsets mesh with Valve's SteamVR and Facebook's plans for Oculus? That's still not clear. And it may not be for a while. Share your voice. Be respectful, keep it clean and stay on topic. We'll remove comments that violate our policy. Kinect for Xbox One. Virtual reality has been a part of popular culture for decades, but for many years it served more as a sci-fi narrative device than as a viable technology for consumers. That has changed dramatically in recent years, as advances in technology have finally allowed the geniuses creating virtual reality platforms to bring their visions to life like never before. The era of virtual reality is here. That’s why we’re so excited to announce a new partnership between Microsoft and virtual reality pioneer Oculus VR. Earlier today, at an Oculus event in San Francisco, Head of Xbox Phil Spencer joined Oculus CEO Brendan Iribe on stage to share some details on what fans can expect to see when the Oculus Rift launches in Q1 2016. The Xbox One controller will be included with every Oculus Rift. The Xbox One controller is designed for gamers, by gamers, for interchangeable gaming between Xbox One and Windows 10 PCs and tablets, with fine-tuned impulse triggers for greater precision and control and a D-pad engineered to deliver greater responsiveness. If you’re going to be playing your Rift games with a controller, this is the one you want in your hands. And, with the new Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows that we unveiled last week included, you can play games on the Rift using the Xbox One controller wirelessly right out of the box. Xbox One games will be playable on Oculus Rift . We shared earlier this year that you’ll be able to stream your Xbox One games to your Windows 10 PC or tablet. Now, we’re happy to announce that we’re bringing the same Xbox One streaming capability to the Rift, a feature that’s only possible through Windows 10. You can play your favorite Xbox One games, like Halo , Forza , Sunset Overdrive and more, on your own virtual reality cinema screen. It’s just like playing in a private theater, and you can even play with your friends through Xbox Live. Windows 10 is the best platform for playing games on the Oculus Rift. The Rift will work natively with Windows 10 to make it easy to set up, jump in, and have an incredible VR gaming experience. Combined with DirectX 12 technology that unlocks the full capabilities of new Windows 10 graphics hardware, made-for-VR games on Windows 10 will have the fastest frame rates and top performance. We’re really excited about today’s announcement and what it means for fans of both Xbox and Oculus. You’ll be hearing more about this great news in the future, so stay tuned to Xbox Wire. When it does hit, it will likely be wireless. Microsoft discusses MR Brian Crecente/Polygon. Microsoft won’t have any form of virtual reality for the Xbox One or Xbox Scorpio at E3 this year as the company continues its focus on VR for computers, officials tell Polygon. And when VR does arrive on an Xbox console, potentially still next year, it sounds like it will be wireless. “Our primary focus is making our mixed reality experiences a success on Windows 10 PCs,” Alex Kipman, technical fellow at Microsoft, told Polygon today. “We believe that right now a Windows PC is the best platform for mixed reality as its open ecosystem and enormous installed base offer the best opportunity for developers, and Windows offers the most choices for consumers. “Windows has been the birthplace of a variety of technologies, and we believe this will hold for mixed reality too. Given the efforts we have underway on Windows for mixed reality, and our belief that console VR should be wireless, right now we are focused on developing mixed reality experiences for the PC, not on the console.” The company declined to comment on whether this would impact a 2018 release for VR on an Xbox platform. In March, Microsoft announced plans to bring mixed reality — which in Microsoft’s view includes everything from augmented reality to virtual reality — to the “Xbox one family of devices” in 2018. The company specifically called out the soon-to-be-released Scorpio in that statement as well. "Because as we saw 4K gaming and really high-end VR taking off in the PC space, we wanted to be able to bring that to console,” Xbox chief Phil Spencer told The Verge during last year’s E3. “Project Scorpio is actually an Xbox One that can natively run games in 4K and is built with the hardware capabilities to support the high-end VR that you see happening in the PC space today . when it ships it will be the most powerful console ever built." While VR won’t be a component of Microsoft’s Xbox press conference pre-E3 next week, there will certainly be a lot of talk about the Scorpio console. Stay tuned for our coverage on that and more as we approach the big show. We’ll also have a deep dive on the current state of virtual reality — featuring conversations with Microsoft, Sony, Oculus, Vive and others — later this week. Trinus vr and xbox one with cardboard works! This topic contains 16 replies, has 11 voices, and was last updated by rhikter 1 year, 3 months ago. So it works now if some one can map the sensor to the right analog stick of the xbox one controller since there is no mouse support. This topic was modified 2 years, 6 months ago by xsteaky. That’s quite interesting! Although I would be worried about the extra latency from double streaming… Alternatively, FreePie could do the job, preparing a script that translates the mouse input to a compatible gamepad format (https://github.com/AndersMalmgren/FreePIE). Does it has to be an Xbox One controller, or can it work with xbox360 (or other generic types)? Keep me updated on your progress, this could be very cool! so i go a switch and connected my pc and xbox one with cable instead of wifi there was literally no lag and neither was there for trinus it was smooth like butter. unfortunately your only able to use a xbox one controller wired to your pc so that it can controll your xbox one. microsoft said they will add mouse and keyboard support. once they do that well have a full vr experience with your amazing app. This is very cool, I look fwd to that mouse/keyboard support update. Keep me posted, and I’ll try to help anyway I can to get it working. I have been streaming with xbox360 for a long time using a capture device on the pc. You could get a “Titan One” usb device to control the game with the tracker. Hey, I just tried this as well, and it works fairly well. As far as the controller for streaming is concerned, the Xbox site says you can use a 360 controller for Xbox streaming: https://support.xbox.com/en-US/xbox-on-windows/gaming-on-windows/troubleshoot-xbox-app-game-streaming. I don’t have my old controller lying around, so I can’t test this right now, but it seems that it should work. I’m guessing there’s more software for emulating a 360 controller right now than an XB1 controller, huh? i haven’t tried this with trinus, but streaming my xbox1 to my pc and gaming with a xbox1 controller works fine. i have got your own idea . damn *-* i have played with trinus on xbox one!! do you want collaborate with me? we can create a better experience on xbox one! please answer me! i have written you on your youtube channel. yeah, @mettsalvo found a cool trick to sort out the head tracking using a controller adapter called Cronus Max. Keep us updated on how it works out, looks promising! Hi. Is there a tutorial on how to use cronusmax with trinusvr and Xbox one? is there any news about Mapping mouse to Right thumb stick in xbox one. I wonder if there is any new news about XBOX (Mapping Mouse as right thumb stick) I think it should be not too hard as long both XBOX controller and Phone sensor are recived by same PC. The only thing we need to interrupt this code so as to send mouse signal instead of Right thumb stick . this kind of update will make huge revolution. it is not a simple task to do. can titan one be helpful , but I think all the work can be done through PC without extra hardware , may be if there is emulator or Binder to bind mouse signal instead of Right thumb stick… I’m just thinking loudly. Hello, my name is Donny, this is a complete guide on How I Set Up Trinus VR to work with my Xbox One. No more fps lag. Gamecontroller at ease. Much more immersion experience. No headtracking (not a issue while gaming) I did this because I wanted to play Forza in VR, also I wanted to because I wanted to use a game controller for comfort. Here’s the steps you need to follow to setup your VR to Xbox. 1. Setup your Xbox to stream to your PC. 2. Connect your prefered VR headmount to Trinus VR. 3. Stream your Xbox One to your PC and use fake 3D. Gear VR Setup to Xbox One. 1. Download package disabler pro (search for “package disabler pro apk” on google) 2. Disable all oculus & gear vr related packages. 3. Do the steps above. This reply was modified 2 years ago by Donthamon. This reply was modified 2 years ago by Donthamon. In fact, most people didn’t have a clue about head-mounted displays, and what they represent. In 90’s, developers have tried to start a virtual reality wave, but with no success. Technology was just not good enough, and the ones who did manage to try it, left with a bad stomach. Now, news about HMD’s are heard from left and right. Palmer Luckey, Co-founder of Oculus, successfully created a spark, and now Sony, HTC, Apple, and even Microsoft view virtual reality as something of worth, and not just a gimmick. Around the same time when Facebook acquired Oculus company, news about PS4’s own headset started to emerge. At this current moment, PS4’s Project Morpheus is viewed as a worthy competitor to Oculus Rift, even though they work on different platforms. This leaves us to wonder if Microsoft plans to stick its feet in virtual reality water. Well, apparently there have been numerous rumors about Microsoft making its own headset, which they plan to reveal at E3 2015 (it’s in June). According to International Business Times, Microsoft has already given their VR headset prototype to software developers. But can we use our Oculus Rift with Xbox right now? As far as “is Oculus Rift Xbox One compatible”, then no, no it isn’t. Oculus VR® has no official support for platforms outside of PC. But, it doesn’t mean that you can’t hook up your Oculus Rift headset to your old Xbox 360 console. I am not sure about Xbox One, but as with PS3 support, you can use an Xbox 360 hack for the Oculus Rift that allows you to experience Xbox (games?) with the Rift. This hack, or “workaround”, was created by a username called noos. He managed to alter video signals with video processors (and a lot more techy stuff), so you are able to view Xbox screen with Rift. Of course, it is not a perfect solution. The games themselves need to have an official support. Otherwise you will experience no head tracking, and the 3D will be absent. For PC, games like GTA 5 or Battlefield 4 can be played with a program called vorpX, even though they do not have an official Oculus Rift support. Xbox, however, has no programmer who would make its games work. According to techradar, Palmer Luckey has said the following: “What we’re most excited about – really the core direction of our company – is trying to make something that works on platforms that are moving quickly and that are continuously getting more powerful, and consoles are not those.” Unfortunately, console platforms are not moving at the same pace as PC is, which means that it limits itself quite tremendously. Xbox already is starting to struggle with the new triple A titles, and if we also add an Oculus Rift support that basically requires 3D and no latency/lag at the same time, Xbox might start to sweat more than necessary. If they do want to get into virtual reality world, making their own headset is a better option. And luckily, that is exactly what they are planning to do. At the E3 2015, we will probably hear news about its own VR headset, and if we are not mistaken, release date might be even this year. PS4’s Project Morpheus has already revealed their own release date (2016), HTC Vive is also planning to come out soon, so I don’t think that Microsoft really plans to stay behind. But as for Oculus Rift and Xbox support, I don’t think it will ever happen. Have something to add? Feel free to comment below: Complete VR Geek, and a passionate Cookie Eater. Related Posts. I am so glad I did ,, People get real picky and are sticklers about games these days I felt it was my duty as a gamer to help clear the confusion. This game is FUN. Slow in beginning but hoursss of content stunning environments if ur a true fan of RPG like me this will fill our RPG need especially since waiting for AAA games is getting exhausting,, Every game has their flaws but ELEX didnt get a fair chance damn reviews are getting ridiculous nyway the game is good its like PB said 'lets include everything we RPG fans love and throw it in' ..if u want a challege , if u like long campaigns etc ull be satisfied. I know it has issues but not enough where theres no fun to be had. btw this is my first PB game and im liking it a lot .come on people lets remember what gamers want simply to have fun. sry didnt want to edit. just wanted to share BTW im in my 20s i know a decent fun game when I see one. ENJOY⚔👌👍👏 427 out of 448 people found this helpful. An obscure gem for discerning tastes. Gonna start out by saying I am not a PB fanboy, have never played another one of their games, bought this because a terrible youtuber made an awful review and I thought, "if this guy hates it, it has to be good." I was right, this game is a true gem, and the right way to make an open world RPG. This game will not hold your hand, it will not snuggle you gently. This game makes you feel the pain of losing the power and prestige your character lost, it makes you live as an outcast in the ruined world of Magalan. As they say these days: IMMERSIVE. The open world is a delight that rivals The Witcher 3. Combat is very rough at first, but once you get some Elex potions down your gullet and can rain hand grenades down on foes it becomes a real selling point. Character interaction and companions are fantastic, it gives me Mass Effect 1 and KOTOR vibes. This has been worth the money, a very rewarding and challenging game, pure gold for the discerning RPG fan. Persevere, be rewarded. 160 out of 167 people found this helpful. The 1 star reviewers unfamiliar with Piranha Bytes? 2ND UPDATE: Nearly 40 hours in and it might be my GOTY. It's a deep RPG with tons of content, you just have to get past its janky-ness. 1ST UPDATE: 10 hours in and I LOVE IT! ---Original:It's a Piranha Bytes game. They make highly ambitious and fun RPGs with a small team and budget. Fans of PB's games will feel right at home. Sad to see the few 1 star reviews pop up immediately after the unlock. Balancing it out for now and will update my review. So far I'm already starting to get sucked in by the janky and quirky charm that PB's games are known for. Back to playing! 836 out of 894 people found this helpful. Interesting, But A Mixed Bag. Update: The more i play, the more i like it. You have to be smart about combat. You can trick beasts into fighting each other, if they are different breeds. Okay, I only suggest this for serious, and i mean really serious, RPG players. A casual gamer or gamer that requires smooth action likely will not enjoy this. I actually like the game mostly, but the game also comes with big frustrations. Combat is clunky, and at times impossible to win. It seems too difficult to level up sometimes. I really like the concept and story, and thus far that is what is keeping me in. Art is pretty cool in it. It is not a Fallout ripoff, but parts are remuniscent. The game is glitchy sometimes but have not experienced anything major. Gonna keep playing to see how the game progresses. IF the game had a smoother combat system, was more polished and less impossible feeling . i have beaten all 3 Dark Souls, so when I say Elex feels impossible sometimes, i mean it . would consider a higher rating.😺✌ 156 out of 165 people found this helpful. A good upgraded RPG from it's Gothic roots. This is a really good RPG from the developers of Gothic series, the graphics are dated, but good, combat simple, but fun, and challenging. The game has crafting, and good skill tree with many options. The game is a mix of Skyrim, Fallout 4, Mass Effect, Dragon Age, it has interesting storyline, and factions great replayability. It has the same feel and development style of past Gothic games, if you liked the Gothic, or Risen RPG series then you will like this improved RPG. The graphics are like Skyrim unenhanced version, dated but environments are detailed. The world is a big open world with a lot of variety in the environments to explore, there are 4 factions you can join each with different ideas of who should control the world. It is great to have another fun RPG on XB1 need more of them. Elex improves on everything that made Gothic RPG series fun. 105 out of 113 people found this helpful. Fun so far. I really enjoy exploring the map, but the only complaint I have so far is that whenever you boost up somewhere with the jetpack, you character doesn't grab hold of the ledge, which is slightly annoying. also sometimes combat feels really clunky, but it's still fun. would highly recommend this game (: Also don't get discouraged at the beginning of the game, cause it's taken me a whole to get any guns or cool weapons, ya just gotta be patient. 99 out of 110 people found this helpful. Gets better as you play! Updating my review from 2 too 4.. after you get through all the frustration at the start of the game with not being able to kill anything in most places the game. After you become a high enough level with good gear and weapons the game becomes enjoyable with a good story throughout 👍 36 out of 38 people found this helpful. FoG Silent Hope. Awesome, fun! Voice acting is top notch. Movement is this games only negative. I recommend this game to HARDCORE RPG PLAYERS ONLY. This game will not hold your hand, it is brutal. Slow but extremely rewarding progression. Does not hand out anything, you must earn it. 156 out of 171 people found this helpful. One of the best rpg's i have ever played. i understand where the low ratings and lack of appeal come from with this game; gameplay seems clunky; you die 100+ times when you first start up; some frame rate issues etc. All elements that slowly shattered my experience at first. Yet all can be easily fixed and overlooked. I dove deep like a deep dish pizza into this game, 40+ and I've only just now have which has changed the game COMPLETELY from gameplay to story. So some advise to REALLY enjoy this game. join a faction, obtain their powers, and rain on hell on all the npc's that disrespected your name before you became a god. 11 out of 11 people found this helpful. a fun game. so far i like the open world exploring and fighting and looting .The graphics are decent and combat is good.A GREAT OPEN WORLD RPG. 46 out of 54 people found this helpful.
