How do I use Xbox One Backward Compatibility? The digital titles that you own and are part of the Back Compat game catalog will automatically show up in the “Ready to Install” section on your Xbox One. For disc-based games that are a part of the Back Compat game catalog, insert the disc and the console will begin downloading the game to your hard drive. After the game has downloaded to your hard drive, users will still need to keep the game disc in the drive to play. Does backward compatibility cost extra? Xbox One Backward Compatibility is free and allows you to play select Xbox 360 and Original Xbox games you already own on Xbox One. Is Xbox Live Gold required for backward compatibility? Xbox Live Gold is not required for Xbox One Backward Compatibility. However, it is required for any standard Xbox Live Gold feature like online multiplayer. Will functionality for the Original Xbox games via Xbox One Backward Compatibility change from the Xbox 360 games in any way? Functionality will be very similar. You can play the digital or disc-based game you own, taking advantage of Xbox One features like Game DVR and broadcasting. Since these are the original games, not remasters, Xbox Live services such as online multiplayer and in-game marketplaces that were available on the Original Xbox, will not be available. However, offline multiplayer scenarios such as co-op, party scenarios (multiple controller on one console), and system-link are supported if they were supported on the Original Xbox. With system-link (if game supports the feature), you can play with others across Original Xbox, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Xbox One S and Xbox One X consoles. There are no Xbox achievements for Original Xbox games because this functionality was not available on the Original Xbox at that time of its release. Lastly, game saves will not transfer to Xbox One but once created on Xbox One, the game saves can transfer to other Xbox One consoles through the cloud. How Microsoft Built Xbox 360, Xbox Compatibility Into the Xbox One. The Xbox One and PS4 have broadly similar features, but there’s a few areas where Microsoft has beaten Sony: Backwards compatibility with the Xbox 360 and steaming games from an Xbox One to a local PC. But while we’ve known Microsoft was adding backwards compatibility since E3 2015, we haven’t seen much of how that process happened, until now. Our sister site, IGN, has published an in-depth exploration of how teams at Microsoft crafted a backwards compatibility solution that would encompass first Xbox 360 games and later add the original Xbox. As early as 2007, Microsoft developers were working on a new emulator, codenamed Fission, that could translate the Xbox 360’s 32-bit games (the Xbox 360 had a 64-bit CPU, but all signs are that it ran 32-bit code) into the 64-bit x86 CPU that Microsoft had already decided it would use. The Xbox One doesn’t have an Xbox 360 or Xbox SoC inside of it for dedicated hardware support, but it does support certain critical capabilities required for backwards compatibility in hardware. XMA audio and Xbox 360 texture formats, for example, are supported natively. Building backwards compatibility wasn’t just a question of writing an emulator. Microsoft had to recruit new programming talent and contact studios for information on what the information spat out during the debugging process actually meant. There was no way to automatically test certain games for full compatibility, which means a lot of manual playtesting was required. One major pitfall that took the team months to solve was the scheduler’s speed. Changing the scheduler to more closely emulate the Xbox 360’s made a huge difference and allowed the team to shove games out the door much more rapidly. Building Xbox compatibility into the Xbox One was a separate and significant problem of its own. While the performance gap is greater and it’s easier to brute-force an Xbox game on a modern Xbox One, it’s not just a question of running game code quickly — code has to be run as close to perfectly as possible to ensure that on-screen effects and game events trigger properly. While the Jaguar CPU at the heart of the Xbox One is a low-power budget processor, the Pentium III Coppermine CPU inside the original Xbox ran at just 733MHz and had a 1.06GB/s FSB. Even a single-core Jaguar packs more than enough horsepower to emulate a Pentium III — but only if the emulator itself is up to the challenge. It took years to bring the hardware emulators to market. Microsoft’s pivot away from “always on” functionality after its disastrous unveil in 2013 apparently took resources away from the development team working on the feature. But so far, this is one capability that Microsoft has delivered well, with updates and support for various features that sometimes make older games look better on the Xbox One than they did when they were new. In order to address a number of the questions and concerns I receive about Xbox One Backward Compatibility, I wanted to update my previous post on the topic with an overview of the capability, address some Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) and mention the most important element of Backward Compatibility – the current list of Xbox One Backward Compatibly titles (Download the list as a .pdf file). Xbox One Backward Compatibility List. (Last Update: 30 January 2018) Backward Compatibility Features: Available at no additional cost; you don’t have to pay to play games you already own. Keep your Xbox 360 game saves, game add-ons, achievements, and Gamerscore. Enjoy the advanced features of your Xbox One like Game DVR, Screenshots and Windows 10 streaming. Play multiplayer with your friends no matter which console they’re on. Works with disc-based and digital games. TIP: If you use Cloud Saved Games, your saved game data will be accessible on whichever console you’re playing on. How to install and play Xbox 360 backward compatible games on your Xbox One. Disc: For disc-based games that are a part of the Back Compat game catalog, simply insert the disc and the console will begin downloading the game to your hard drive. After the game has finished downloading, you will still need to keep the game disc in the drive to play. Digital: The digital titles that you own and are part of the Back Compat game catalog will automatically show up in the “Ready to Install” section on your Xbox One, and once they are installed they will show up in the Games section of your Xbox One. TIP: To open the Xbox 360 dashboard from within the Xbox One environment, hold the view and menu buttons. How to purchase Xbox 360 games if you don’t own an Xbox 360. If you want to purchase an Xbox 360 title and don’t own or have access to an Xbox 360, you can still purchase the game digitally online from the Xbox marketplace. Simply log into your account at http://www.xbox.com and navigate to the catalog of Xbox 360 titles. Once you select a title, you will see the option to download it to your Xbox 360. Clicking on the download button actually brings up the purchasing screen. Once you purchase the game and the transaction is complete, the game will be registered to your account. A few things to note: You have to have a valid payment option on file to purchase any title. If a game is free, you’re still required to “purchase” it – you just won’t be charged anything for it. The Xbox 360 Marketplace and the Xbox One Store websites use different architecture, so if you have credit but no payment option associated with your account, you won’t be able to use the credit to purchase Xbox 360 titles. You will have to add a payment option or purchase the title using an Xbox 360 console. Not all Xbox 360 games are backward compatible with Xbox One, but we will be adding more on a regular basis.
