New Features Coming to Xbox One Preview and Xbox Beta App this Month.
In November, we transformed Xbox One to make it the fastest and most social Xbox experience ever. We continue to evolve the Xbox experience based on your feedback and I’m excited to announce the first of a set of new features releasing in 2016. Rolling out to the Xbox One Preview audience starting today, and to Windows 10 PC & mobile Xbox Beta app members next week, are a host of updates. This month, we’re focused on continuing to improve social features to help you stay connected to the Xbox Live community across console and PC, while bringing these experiences closer together.
Brand new experiences and updates which will start to rollout to Xbox One Preview:
• See who’s in a Party: Xbox One Preview participants will be able to see who’s in a Party before joining. When you view the profile of a friend who is in a Party in the guide, you will now be able to see who else they’re playing with. Click the ‘Chat’ button which appears immediately below the user to jump in and see who is in the Party.
• Gamerscore Leaderboard: In Xbox One Preview, go to the Achievements section of your profile by clicking ‘View Achievements’ through the sign-in tab of the guide to check out the revived Gamerscore Leaderboard. Through the Gamerscore Leaderboard, see where you stand relative to your friends by comparing total gamerscore, as well as biggest gains over a rolling 30-day period. Click on the Gamerscore Leaderboard to see the full list of all your friends.
• Re-arrange Pins on Home and access them offline: Many of you have told us that you want Pins on your Xbox One Home to be easier to organize. In Preview, you will now be able to rearrange individual pins. We also made Pins accessible for launching when you are offline.
• Updating Activity Feed in Xbox One: Your activity feed in Xbox One Preview will inform you when there are new items in your feed. Clicking the link will take you to the top of your feed where you’ll see a run-down of the newest posts, so that you always have the freshest content at your fingertips.
• Joinable Twitch Broadcasts: You want it to be easier to watch your friend’s game broadcasts. In Preview, Game Hubs as well as the game tile will allow you to easily launch Twitch.tv broadcasts if friends are broadcasting.
• Improvements to Suggested Friends: Looking for people who you might know on Xbox or top content creators to follow? Check out the new Friend Suggestions area in Community and the Friends list in the Guide on Xbox One. Friend Suggestions include the gamertag, real name (if shared), gamerpic or Xbox Avatar image, and the reason the suggestion was made to you. Click through from the suggestion to view the member’s full profile and choose to grow your friends list.
• Hide games from ‘ready-to-install’ list: Fans asked that we re-enable the ability to hide content like betas, trials, games, and apps that they no longer want to install. Xbox One Preview members will be able to start using this feature again.
Updates coming to Xbox One Preview and the Xbox Beta app that make gaming on any platform better:
• Avatar Store: Equip your avatar with the latest avatar items in the newly-integrated ‘Avatar Store’. On the console, the Store is built right into the Xbox Avatars app and on Windows 10 PCs and phones, access the Store through the Xbox Avatars app. Get access to the entire catalog of new and oldie-but-goodie items, including free items. As you’re perusing catalogs, enjoy the ability to preview the items on your avatar real-time before you buy.
• Xbox News: Xbox News is a one-stop source for all the latest information about new hardware, console updates, game releases, tournaments like the Halo World Championship, breaking entertainment content, and more. This month, both Xbox Beta app and Xbox One Preview audiences will see Xbox News posts in their activity feed to make it easier to stay up to date on all things Xbox.
• Improvements to Trending: Across Xbox One Preview and Xbox Beta app experiences this month for console and Windows 10 PCs and phones, you’ll notice a new access point for Trending items to the right of the Community tab on your console and in the left menu area of the Xbox app. This gets you to a dedicated Trending landing page with the most popular topics across Xbox Live surfaced at the top followed by an inspirational assortment of top videos, screenshots, achievements, and more that members across the community have created or unlocked. Consider friending or following publishers of content that you like.
• Suggested friends: In both the Xbox One Preview and Xbox Beta app, we’re making it easier to get details on your suggested friends. Starting this month, if you click ‘see all’ or double tap on the shortlist of friend suggestions in any scenario, you will be pointed to a full-screen view of all suggested friends.
Across both Xbox One Preview and the Xbox Beta app, January brings the injection of Trending topics and friend suggestions into your activity feed.
• Compact mode for Xbox App: With this update to the Xbox Beta app, we’ve moved additional functions to compact mode which will enable you to quickly switch between your friends’ view, your party, messages and activity alerts. A quick click allows you to keep an eye on what your friends are up to, while multi-tasking on your Windows PC!

Microsoft is rolling out a new Xbox One beta program that will allow some users to test upcoming system updates and give feedback prior to their public release, the company announced today on the Xbox Wire.
The Xbox One beta program begins today. Microsoft is now inviting "select" Xbox Live members to preview the March 4 Xbox One update, which promises to fix party chat ahead of Titanfall's launch on March 11. If you're selected, you'll be notified via a message on Xbox Live.
After downloading and spending time with the new features, you are asked to provide feedback to Microsoft's research team in this private forum. A similar beta testing program was in place for the Xbox 360.
"We're counting on our fans to share their input as we're putting the final touches on the new features that we plan to deliver in early March," Microsoft said in a statement.
The February Xbox One system update rolled out last week, introducing a battery power indication, improved storage space management, and USB keyboard support, among other improvements.
Invitation to Preview the Next Xbox One Update.
The team is working hard to deliver some exciting updates in March that will make Xbox One even better. But in order to ensure our customers have the best experience on Xbox One and Xbox Live, we need the help of our passionate community.
Beginning today, Xbox is inviting select Xbox Live members to preview new features coming to Xbox One in a March system update and future system updates as they become available, asking them to provide valuable feedback before the updates are implemented worldwide. Selected participants will receive an Xbox Live message with a token to register. The next system update will begin rolling out next week to those who will preview the new features. Once registered, participants will be able to test the early features included in the update and provide feedback on a private forum and can opt out of future waves.
Like Marc Whitten announced last week, the updates coming in March will significantly improve the multiplayer and party experiences on Xbox One. We’re counting on our fans to share their input as we’re putting the final touches on the new features that we plan to deliver in early March.

The closed beta for Microsoft's upcoming pirate game, Sea of Thieves, is set to begin tomorrow, January 24, and players can now start preparing for it ahead of time. The beta is available to pre-load on both Xbox One and PC, though only certain players will be able to participate in it. [ Update: The Sea of Thieves beta is now available.]
Like the Sea of Thieves technical alpha back in December, tomorrow's beta is restricted to those who either joined the Sea of Thieves Insider Program prior to December 1, 2017 or have pre-ordered the title. Xbox One players who reserved Sea of Thieves digitally from the Xbox Store will find the beta waiting in the My Games and Apps section of their console's dashboard, while those who pre-ordered the game on PC via the Microsoft Store will find it in their Library. If you reserved the game at retail, you'll need to redeem the code you received for the Black Dog cosmetic pack on the Microsoft Store (PC) or Xbox Store (Xbox One) before installing the beta. The beta client weighs in at 7.45 GB on Xbox One; you can read more about how to install it on the official Sea of Thieves website.
The Sea of Thieves closed beta begins at 4 AM PT / 7 AM ET / 12 PM GMT on January 24 and runs until 12 AM PT / 3 AM ET / 8 AM GMT on January 29. Developer Rare hasn't detailed what players could expect from the beta, but the studio did confirm it won't be a portion of the full game but rather a tailored experience "that offers a true taste of the pirate life."
Beyond the game itself, a Sea of Thieves art book is being published by Dark Horse later this year. Titan Comics is also releasing a Sea of Thieves graphic novel series around the game's launch in March.

Hats off to the dev team on this app. I don't use the Xbox for much more than a media consumption device, but the SmartGlass app is amazing. If there was a quicker way to get to volume controls (notification center custom add on or something) that would just complete the experience, but it is gold how it is now. Send these guys over to the Xbox Music team, that app needs some love now 😉.

Why separate from the Xbox windows 10 mobile app?!
Because Microsoft likes to half develop 25 separate things instead of really getting a few things right that's why. This app is the better of the two, the features the Xbox app offers could just be integrated into smart glass and be done with it.

Understanding betas, demos, and trials on Xbox One.
In addition to selling complete games, Xbox Live provides different ways to try out a game before you buy it. The most common ways are betas, demos, and trials. While details will vary from game to game, the below FAQ should help you understand the differences and commonalities with these offers.

Betas and alphas are early, incomplete versions of a game. From time to time, a publisher may choose to release an alpha or a beta through Xbox Live to encourage the public to help test their game. Common examples include multiplayer betas, in which hundreds of thousands of gamers can stress-test game servers in a real-world environment. For information or assistance with a particular beta, contact the game’s publisher.
A demo is a limited version of a game intended to let interested gamers try it before purchase. Demos usually offer a very limited window into the game—usually just a few levels or features.
Trials are the full version of a game, but with limitations for people who haven't purchased it yet. Unlike a demo, which may only have one or two levels, a trial may be the whole game but only playable for a few hours prior to purchase. If you choose to purchase, the trial unlocks the full game and you don’t need to download it again.
Betas, demos, and trials are available to the public in Microsoft Store on Xbox One on your console, just like full games. Some games, especially betas, will not be publicly available and may require a code to get access. Others may only be available through special offers such as EA Access. Contact the game’s publisher for details on how to gain access to their title.

No, we can't add time to a trial. Neither Xbox Support nor the game publisher can make this adjustment.
A trial’s countdown is based on the hours the game is running on your console, even if you're not actually playing it. Pausing the game, or allowing it to run in the background while you use another app does not pause the countdown. To ensure you get the most time from your trials, be sure to quit the game before moving on to something else. Here's how:
To return to the Home screen, press the Xbox button to open the guide, and then select Home . Highlight the game’s tile. Press the Menu button on your controller. Select Quit .

As an Xbox Insider, you’ll decide your level of involvement and what content to pursue – whether it’s on PC or Xbox One or focused around system updates or games. You’ll automatically become eligible to join more and more Insider content previews based on your interests, tenure as an Xbox Insider, Xbox Insider XP score, and activities you participate in.

Getting started as an Xbox Insider is as easy as downloading the Xbox Insider Hub app on your Xbox One or PC.
Navigate to the Store tab on the dashboard or select Store in the guide. Select Search . Search for the Xbox Insider Hub. Select Get/Install from the product page For more info on getting and using the Xbox Insider Hub see Get the Xbox Insider Hub app.
Each Insider content preview has different requirements to participate. To view the requirements for each preview:
Launch the Xbox Insider Hub . Go to Insider content . Select the preview you want. The eligibility requirements are on the Info tab of the Insider content details page.
Note Only previews you're eligible to participate in will appear in Insider content. Additionally, there are often different Insider content previews available on Xbox One and Windows 10, as some programs are specific to a given platform.
You’re required to accept the Xbox Insider Program agreement when you first launch the Xbox Insider Hub. See the Xbox Insider Program agreement.
Can anyone join the Xbox One Update Preview?
Yes. Note that the available Update Preview ring(s) you can register with will be based on your Xbox Insider XP score and tenure in the program.
How can I join the Xbox One Update Preview, or move my console to a different Preview ring?
Launch the Xbox Insider Hub on your Xbox One console. On the main landing page, select Insider content . Under System , select Xbox One Update Preview . Select Join or Manage . Choose a Preview ring from the available selections.
How do the Xbox One Update Preview rings differ and how do I change rings?
There are four Xbox One Update Preview rings, which allow you control when and how often you will get early access to console updates. You’ll gain access to rings based on your activity as an Xbox Insider. If you’ve been invited to more than one ring, you can switch between them from the Xbox Insider Hub.
The current Xbox One Update Preview rings are:
Alpha – Open on an “invite only” basis and receives updates at the earliest point in the preview window. Beta – Open to Xbox Insiders with a Program tenure of 3 or more months and an Xbox Insider XP Level of 4 or higher. This ring receives updates shortly after Alpha. Delta – Open to any Xbox Insider with a tenure of 1 or more months that has reached Xbox Insider Level 2 or higher. Depending on certain edge cases where further attention is required from Alpha or Beta rings, Delta Insiders may receive system updates before Beta, though this is not a common scenario. Additionally, while early system updates are not guaranteed across the Delta ring, all Delta Insiders will receive the update prior to GA. Omega – Open to anyone and receives system updates shortly before the GA (General Availability) release.
Do I need to join Xbox One Update Preview to participate in game or app previews available through the Xbox Insider Program?
Generally, no. While some game or app previews may be offered only to users in a specific Xbox One Update Preview rings due to a game or app’s dependency on a system update version newer than the current public update, many games and apps are made available to Xbox Insiders regardless of enrollment in an Xbox One Update Preview ring.
My friend is eligible for a preview but I'm not. Why is that?
Not all previews will be available to all Xbox Insiders. Participants can be eligible for previews based on a variety of factors, which may be different for each Xbox Insider preview. In some cases, the game or app developer may decide on eligibility themselves. Eligibility can also be determined based on your interests, previous activities in the Xbox Insider Program, tenure as an Xbox Insider, Xbox Insider XP score, games you own, and more.
There’s a preview listed as Joined in Insider content, but I didn’t join it, and there’s no option to leave. Why is this?
Occasionally we will automatically enroll users who meet certain simple criteria in an Insider program. For example, all Insiders who launch the Xbox Insider Hub and agree to the Terms and Conditions are automatically enrolled in the Xbox Insider Program. Generally this is done to expose qualified users to certain announcements, quests, and so we can learn about your interests and notify you of new opportunities. You may gain access to new Insider content through these programs.
I stopped participating in the Xbox Insider Program. Can I return?
Yes. On the Xbox One console, you can reinstall the Xbox Insider Hub from the Ready to Install list in My games & apps . If you can’t find it there, look for it in the Store.
If you previously participated in the Xbox Insider Program on PC and have since uninstalled the app, simply search for “Xbox Insider Hub” in the Store.
I bought a new console. Can I use that to participate in the Xbox Insider Program?
Yes. Just install the Xbox Insider Hub from the Ready to Install list in My games & apps . If you can’t find it there, look for it in the Store. Once launched, you’ll be eligible for the same Insider content you were eligible for on other consoles.
I sold my console or no longer wish to participate as an Xbox Insider. How can I stop participating in the Xbox Insider Program?
Prior to selling or gifting your console to someone else, you should remove it from the Xbox Insider Program by navigating to Settings > Manage Devices , scrolling to your device marked (current) , selecting it and selecting Done . If you’ve already sold or gifted your console, you can launch the Xbox Insider Hub on another console and follow these same directions after selecting your old console.
The same steps apply if you intend to keep your console but no longer wish to participate as an Xbox Insider and would like to unenroll your console from the program. After electing to remove a console, it may take up to 72 hours before the removal is complete, during which time you may still receive console, game, or app updates. As part of the removal process your console may undergo a factory refresh. If a factory refresh is required, your games and apps will not be erased; however, any profiles or system settings saved to the console will need to be restored after the factory refresh is complete.
Note You’ll need to know the serial number or name of your previous console to ensure you remove the correct Xbox device.
How long will it take for my request to have a console removed from the program to be processed?
After removing a console from the Xbox Insider Program it can take up to 72 hours for that removal to complete, during which time you may still receive console, game, or app updates. When the unenrollment process is complete, your console may be reset to factory defaults While this will remove all profiles and settings from the console, it will not remove your stored games and apps.
My family shares a console. Can we all participate in the Xbox Insider Program?
Yes! The Xbox Insider Program allows everyone in your home to participate. Anyone who launches the Xbox Insider Hub can participate in previews on that console if they are eligible.
Note Eligibility for Insider content depends on your Level within the program, previous activity and a number of other criteria. Insider content, for example specific games or apps, available to you may differ from the content available to a friend or another member of your family.
I no longer wish to participate in the Xbox One Update Preview. How can I stop participating in this or other previews?
Leaving the Xbox One Update Preview is just as easy as joining it. You can remove yourself from the Xbox One Update Preview by following these steps:
Launch the Xbox Insider Hub on your Xbox One console. On the main landing page, select Insider content . Under System , select Xbox One Update Preview . Select Join or Manage . At the very bottom select Unenroll .
Note: This process typically takes an average of 10 minutes to complete.
Are previews available in the Xbox Insider Program under an NDA (Non-Disclosure Agreement)?
In most cases, previews are not under NDA, but some might be. Previews that require an NDA will require you to accept an additional Terms of Use before participating.
