Today a new Xbox lands in our inbox, and that's a rare thing—though not as rare as it used to be. What makes the new Xbox One S a worthy mid-cycle update to Microsoft's console? Let's tear down this surprisingly slimmer , possibly speedier , appreciably sassier Xbox One and find out. Game on! This teardown season is just getting started—add us on Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter and never miss a beat. Dieser Teardown ist keine Reparaturanleitung. Um dein Xbox One S zu reparieren, verwende unsere Fehlerbehebungsseite. Schritt 1 Xbox One S Teardown. You'd expect some differences from the Day One Edition Xbox One we tore down way back in 2013, and you'd be right. Here's what we know: Spec-bumped GPU supporting HDR10 along with the same AMD "Jaguar" 8-core SoC found in the original Xbox One. 2 TB of storage (500 GB and 1 TB configurations are coming) HDMI 2.0a connectivity with support for 4K video at 60 Hz. Internal power supply. Fancy vertical stand (2 TB model only) Redesigned Xbox Wireless Controller. Etched into the starboard side of the Xbox One S, we find a cute reminder that this console still hails from the other tech capital of the West Coast: "Hello from Seattle," home of the Microsoft brigade. Moving right along, we discover the Xbox One S is now identified as Model 1681. In a design decision that takes us back to consoles of old, this One features mechanical buttons in lieu of capacitive ones. Gamers with a toddler or wet-nosed pet know the pain of the ultra-sensitive power button on the original Xbox One. Around back, under the many vent holes we find: HDMI out (left) and in (right) Two USB 3.0 ports (in addition to the one on the front) IR output, optical audio, and Ethernet ports. What about my Kinect, you ask? You can apply for a "free" Kinect USB adapter—provided you already own a Kinect, an original Xbox One, and the Xbox One S. Those who buy a Kinect to go with their Xbox One S will have to purchase the $40 adapter separately. Our first act of teardown: tamper evident sticker removal. But no screws in sight, just the back of an immobile plastic clip. Bummer. We take a moment to reminisce about our old Xbox 360 Opening Tool, but decide our trusted iFixit Opening Tool would be of more use here. Make that opening tools —because popping that plastic "security" nub takes a little extra oomph . Do we like security clips? Not in a box. Not with a fox. Not in a house. Not with a mouse. We do not like them here nor there; we do not like them anywhere. After some intense prying, we successfully remove the bottom cover, revealing a metal interior case. These clips may be tough at first, but plastic is bound to bend or break, unlike a reusable screw. The next time you open your One S it may not clip back together. I solved this problem with small white snap clips that you would use to hold auto plastic together. Some nostalgic green screws labeled F (for first?) free the primary assembly from the upper case. Remember when Xbox was black and green and not a Destiny bundle PS4? This One, more streamlined than its predecessor, doesn't feature any weird, afterthought components left out in the cold. All that's left in the PC/ABS case are some button covers and Sabic and Samsung logos—probably the plastic suppliers. Okay, is it just the teardown giddiness, or does this case vaguely resemble a Star Destroyer hangar? Lifting one metal midbody panel reveals a beautiful sight: such nice, sleek components that we are momentarily inclined to keep the cover off forever. Somebody call the Jackson 5, 'cause identifying these numbered and labeled components is easy as 01-02-03 (and 04). But wait—who's that we spy? Master Chief has arrived on a new world, this time to protect the optical disc drive bracket. Hopefully the Flood keeps out of this drive for good. Much like the RF board on the Xbox One, the front panel board of the Xbox One S detaches outward from the lower case. With the front panel board's EMI shield removed, we quickly spy a lone IC and some of its friends: MediaTek MT7632TUN (Likely a variation of MT7632 2x2 802.11n + Bluetooth 4.0 Module) Sync switch for wireless controllers. Any chance ifixit will be supplying this board as is the case with the Xbox One version? I need one for. reasons. The horror, it's just a cut-cost version from the original. No tactile buttons because the ISD chip is missing. No power-up tunes or speaker for the same reason. The shielded connector is replaced by a cheap generic one. Cheap Mediatek radios instead of Broadcom or Marvell. Oh, and they have Apple complex, now using a black PCB. Next up on the teardown chopping block is the Wi-Fi board. After removing a few Torx screws, it comes quietly just like the front panel board before it. This is a nice incremental improvement over its location in the previous Xbox One—it makes for one less step to open the inner metal case. Wi-Fi is handled by a MediaTek MT7612UN (Likely a variation of MT7612U 2x2 802.11ac Wi-Fi Module) At this point, component removal is a bit of a hunt, so we extract some screws and see which component is freed first. Oddly enough, despite being labeled 04, the hard drive is the first component out. The labels are likely numbered according to assembly, rather than the disassembly. We find a Samsung Seagate Spinpoint M9T ST2000LM003 2 TB 5400 RPM with 32 MB Cache SATA III 6.0 Gb/s hard drive. Try saying that ten times fast. Sadly, hard drive replacements still void the warranty, and need some tricky formatting. The One S packs a sweet SATA III drive, but it may still be using the SATA II interface of the original Xbox One. You can always add an external hard drive though, thanks Microsoft! can you change it to a SSD tho? Is this hard drive any different than the one in the original? would love to know the answer if this drive is any better than the original. with the sata 3 port, i was almost sure the drive would be comparable to the hd in the elite. I have successfully changed the hard drive to ssd in mine. what is "may" still be using SATA II interface, is it SATA II or III? Schritt 10. The next to go is number two : the optical drive— too easy! Master Chief is of course along for the ride. Here we have the artist formally known as a BD-ROM drive, courtesy of Philips and Lite-On Digital Solutions. The DG-6M5S model found in the Xbox One S is slightly different from the DG-6M1S found in the Xbox One, with the biggest upgrade being support for BD-UHD. We also snag a couple rubber bumpers. These probably help keep the high-speed optical drive from rattling us off our rockers. Schritt 11. Now we come to the One S's hat trick (a.k.a. #03)—a smaller, newly-fanless, neatly-integrated power supply. Gone is that dangling anchor of yore. An external power supply is much easier to replace than an internal one. So lets hope Microsoft did their homework to mitigate that need! This power supply also accepts 100-240 V inputs, meaning you can take it pretty much anywhere there's a socket. Take that, Xbox One! The power supply connects with what PC gamers will instantly recognize as a perfectly ordinary, 6-pin PCIe connector. Is this USA version? All Xbox One S has accepts universal voltage 100-240? Does Xbox One S from USA supports 100-240 V? So if I buy an European version I can use it in US without any trouble or add-on needed? Is there a way to reset this manually. Mine won't turn on after I plugged it into a surge protector. Xbox support says they won't take it back due to tampering. Schritt 12. Things are heating up in the teardown room, but we can't extract the "Thermal System" just yet. So we lift the whole dang motherboard assembly out of the metal casing. A springy, X-shaped bracket secures the heat sink to the motherboard—a signature part we've seen in every Xbox since the original 360. The "X" is a bit fussy and takes some muscle, but some practiced prying with a flathead driver saves the day. Schritt 13. With the component countdown nearly complete, it's time to extract part number 01: the thermal system. Out comes the system's single 120 mm fan—looking much like a PC case fan, but with some sculpting that's unique to the Xbox One's design. The standard Xbox One had a similarly robust cooling setup, possibly designed to avoid a repeat of the Xbox 360's billion dollar problem. The backup for the One S's biggest fan is an impressive aluminum heat sink and copper heat pipe set. Cool. For the size of the case that is one big heatsink and fan. Hopefully it allows the One S to operate fairly quietly. It's kind of ridiculous how much smaller the PS4 compared to the original Xbox One especially when you factor in the external power supply, but the PS4 does run very hot and loud compared to the One. That's the trade off. The larger the fan, the lower the RPM's needed. PS4's fan is a side venting fan, which is loud as !&&*. Is the heatsink the same as the one found in the original xbone?? because if it is then can't they run the fan at an even slower speed due to the decreased heat output of the new chip?? We can see that it has 4 PINs = PWM fan, means that they can run at slower speed based on selected sensors. However, sensors can be temperature of the board or processor or any other. The 'new' chip doesn't run hotter. I'ts made using a smaller process (14nm instead of 20something I believe) which lets it run cooler, even with the 7% bump to the GPU. The fan is actually larger than the original. 112mm compared to 120mm. The problem with the PS4 is it might be thin but its really too deep. I find it really hard to fit on my shelf and I would have preferred it to be twice as tall and an inch or too less deep. It would also have helped fit a larger fan I expect. I didn't like the original Xbox One especially the external PSU, but it looks like the S is a very nice refined design. Can someone tell me the thickness of the fan? I know its 120mm wide, but I want to try to replace it with a PC fan with some modding. also, I see its a PWM 4-pin fan, which is good, but will it run any old fan? Does anyone know if there is a voltage limit to the fans power socket? Schritt 14. Now on to our One true love, chips! X949211-001 DG4001FYG87IA (Includes 1.75 GHz AMD "Jaguar" 8-core CPU + overclocked 914 MHz AMD Radeon Graphics GPU) 16 x Samsung SEC 549 K4W4G1646E-BC1A 4 Gb (512 MB) "gDDR3" SDRAM (total of 16 x 512 MB = 8 GB) X861949-005 T6WD5XBG-0003 Southbridge. Toshiba THGBMFG6C1LBAIL 8 GB eMMC NAND Flash. ON Semiconductor NCP4205 GASUY1614 (Likely an iteration of the NCP4204 GAC1328G Integrated Power Control IC found in the Xbox One) Texas Instruments SN75DP159 6 Gb/s DP++ to HDMI Retimer. SAMSUNG K4W4G1646E-BC1A should be GDDR3 not DDR3. You're right! Thanks. We've updated the step and added a link to Samsung's product guide with additional info on that chip. Any chance you could give a measurement of the dimensions of the "X949211-001 DG4001FYG87IA "? I'm trying to get a good idea of how big the shrink was (the last one was 363 mm2). I'm hoping the changes didn't add many transistors since I do already have a source for that info on the original (I think it was. 5 billion though obviously there's some rounding). Never mind, Eurogamer has not measured it at 240mm2. Thank you anyway. Do you know what this piece is called? PxD637 and where can i find it? What is the dimensions of the board itself. Schritt 15. And on the back of the motherboard. is not much really. Realtek RTL8111HM (Likely an iteration of the RTL8111 gigabit Ethernet Controller) Oh and that handy front-side USB port—which is on the opposite end and opposite side from its friends, poor guy. I looking for number of chip on place U6U1 left corner. Can I have full number, please ? Thank you. Schritt 16. Now on to the controller! While we are disappointed by the lack of visible screws, we will celebrate a small concession: the batteries are still user-replaceable! (Looking at you, DualShock 4). Using our recent console expertise, we bust out the trusty opening tools and pop off some white paneling, finding some sneaky Torx security screws. Boo. Not only that, but a final Torx security screw is hiding under the battery compartment sticker. Double boo. But hey, still better than Pentalobes. Schritt 17. Popping off those plastic panels reveals what looks like a neat little assembly, complete with four haptic feedback motors. But once we start to extract the beast, we see the truth: Unless you're handy with a soldering iron, this is an all-or-nothing disassembly procedure. We decided to pick option "all" and just lay everything out, still connected. Beauty is only skin-deep, and so too are this controller's physical changes. Inside, it's largely the same design as the original Xbox One controller—our guides should be relevant for both models. The new controller added Bluetooth to its existing WiFiDirect connection. Any notes on that? With regards to the "Inside, it's largely the same design" comment. I've had two original controllers and an Elite controller that developed left stick drift. Are the joystick boxes any different in the One S controller or are they the same crappy part? TIA. Yeah, I'd like to know if the stick assemblies use the same grey plastic clips that eventually pop off after wear and tear. Can you answer please? Schritt 18. That's a wrap! Time to lay out the parts and calculate a repairability score. Abschließende Gedanken. Only a few tools are required to take the whole console apart. Once inside, a clean, no-nonsense modular design allows the drives, fan, heat sink, PSU, wireless board, and front daughterboard to be easily replaced. Fewer interlocking body panels and a simpler clip arrangement make opening this generation of Xbox easier than its senior. Replacing the hard drive will require both voiding your warranty and some difficult hackery to make it serviceable. Reparierbarkeits-Index. (10 ist am einfachsten zu reparieren) Scott Havard. My question is whether the SATA controller on the motherboard is a SATA III interface; the tear down guide (which is great btw!) only mentions that the 2TB hard drive itself is SATA III. According to the Xbox One (original) tear down guide and this tear down guide, both the Xbox One and Xbox One S use the same south bridge; which would imply that the Xbox One S is only capable of SATA II speeds, regardless of the fact it holds a SATA III drive. I Googled the X861949 southbridge and it's the exact same one as in the first Xbone. It hardly matters; no HDD is going to get anywhere near the limits of the SATA II bus, let alone the SATA III bus. You need a seriously fast SSD to start seeing a difference there, and AFAICT the XBone's OS isn't set up to do TRIM, which would limit the lifespan. wonder about the possibility of cloning the HDD to a SSD. has anyone tried this yet? I hope someone tries it because I want to know if it can be done. An user cloned his 500gb hdd on a 500gb SSD and it worked, not sure if cloning a source bigger than the target will still do the trick. I can confirm it will work. I have the original model Xbox One and put a 2TB hard drive in there, no issues. It's not even as hard as these guys make it sound. You just plug your original hard drive into a computer and make an image of it ("dd" style image, I use Win32DiskImager on Windows for it), then write the image back to your new drive. If the new drive is larger (which is generally the whole point), boot up GParted and enlarge the data partition. They are all NTFS, no proprietary stuff like the 360. Worked first try. I used this tutorial when I changed my Xbox One's 500gb hard drive to a Seagate 1tb sshd hybrid drive(Pretty much the same disk that MS use in Xbox One elite console). I would recommend this operation to everyone who fully understand the instructions and are willing to sacrifice the warranty. Yes, I put a samsung evo 850 500gb ssd internally in my xbox. The clone process is fairly simple. A little linux knowhow is required. However, I don't know if the XB1 supports trim. And Fallout 4 see's a significant decrease in load times. It's actually playable now. 15-20 second load time vs 1-2 minutes. A SATA III hard drive does not make a SATA III system. The southbridge is the same, so I assume still limited to SATA II. There is one thing that is not clear to me about this teardown. Does the One S motherboard have a SATA3 port or is it only the Seagate HDD that has the SATA3 port? Also, the controller was dismissed as being the same, but it's definitely not the same as the original Xbox One controller from 2013. It has a headphone jack, Bluetooth, different bumpers, and a textured grip. so it has a separate wifi N chip for the controllers? that explains why they need a separate proprietary adaptor for pc use, also using SATA II while having usb 3 is pretty odd, not to mention this thing seems to be at least on par with modern 2013 APU systems, now down to 16nm, the psu is a lot smaller it seems it barely uses half the wattage of before thanks to the process shrink. The GPU is not the one that the original xbox one has . Xbox one S has a new GPU polaris 11, most likely the RX 460 with h.265 hardware acceleration. The system is codenamed "Durango Polaris". I don't suppose you noticed where the IR sensor is (not the blaster) on this unit compared with the Xbox One? The original xbox one doesn't have an IR blaster, you have to use kinect. What are the xbox one s motherboard dimensions.. What are the xbox one s motherboard dimensions. Do you think the xbox one s can be water cooled? What kind of cpu waterblock can fit on it cause im going to experiment on the 500gb model. https://imgur.com/a/EZuso Yes you can, with a bit of modification. Do you think can the xox one s be watetcooled? What cpu waterblock can fit? Just wanted to know the plastic is painted white or some kind of coating? Because when I recieved mine it had what appeared to be a hair that was stuck into the front next to the eject button going inside of the disc slot.Or it could of been a plastic burr from manufacturing it. At first I thought it was a crack but upon further inspection with a light I noticed it was a hair stuck into the surface texture of the front console. When I removed it a light line was left. It drives me nuts and only I can motice it from about 3 inches away. Wanted to know if it could be painted to match. Or should I just get over it. Thanks. Pretty sure it has 8 gig DDR3 RAM not GDDR3. You may be right. Samsung lists these chips as "gDDR3" (as opposed to GDDR3)—but if you read the fine print, it's not categorized as GDDR3 but rather SDDR3 SDRAM. It's possible Samsung is muddying the waters by using a product name with a lower case "g" that has nothing to do with the GDDR3 standard. Is the Xbox One fan compatible with the One S fan? Seems the looks like almost the same but. Aside of a marking on the power supply (110-240) did you actually try pluging in two different voltages? if we bought Xbox One S from US, can we use it in Turkey? Do we need any other power supply to convert the voltage? Can the power button be reorientated or is it fixed in there for good? I ask this because when i have my 2tb vertical using the stand the power button display really bugs me. I may take mine apart and add lights to it, I'll also try and spin the button good shout. I'd like to know if a PC will recognise the UHD-BD drive so we can get one step closer to cracking open a 4K disc. Thanks to you guys I dared to open my noisy little X-Box and plant a PC fan in it. The noisiest part since is the new 2 TB HDD which I installed while the case was open. Pictures here: https://1drv.ms/f/s!Ap7h5FFmvMougR0R5fCx. Cool, excuse my ignorance - but does it plug straight into the xbox motherboard without any special soldering etc required? No it doesn't. I had to cut the connector off of the original PC fan and the X-Box fan and reconnect them with 3M Scotchlok connectors. Since I am not an expert technician I simply guessed that it would be a standard PWM fan with a proprietary connector. After cutting the cables I connected the X-Box connector to the Noctua fan cables in the same order they left the fan motor of the X-Box fan (from left to right: Noctua: black, ye, gr, blue; X-Box all black). I hope you get what I am trying to say here, since English isnt my first language. I've played for a few hours since and I have no (heat) problems whatsoever. Hi, I'm trying to decide whether or not to upgrade from the Xbox one, my main consideration is whether the 4k upscaling capabilities in the One S is superior to the Sony 4k processor X1 found in my TV (Sony KD55X8005CBU (SD:2). I'm not concerned with HDR at the moment as my TV does not support it. I was looking for the "bit" in the Xbox one S teardown that's responsible for the upscaling so I could compare it, but after reading this I'm one the wiser :( Please don't take that the wrong way, it's not a criticism of the article, which I enjoyed it more than I thought possible from a tear down write up. Kind regards. Which ones are the extra connectors (the white ones) of the Disk Drive and Hard Drive aside from the SATA connectors? I Need An Power Supply Replacement And I Can't Seem To Locate A Website That Sells These Can Anyone Help me. DM Me At Me2MasterMods2.1@Gmail.com. I've thought about replacing the internal HDD with an SSD to improve speed of the console and especially loading times of games. After I saw good youtube reviews of people using external SSDs attached via USB 3.0 I changed my mind and I added also an external SSD to my Xbox One S. I used "Samsung Extreme 500" SSD with a capacity of 240 GB (which is working fine even it shows only 230 usable in Xbox menu). Speed has increased! :-) I have done this. i need de internal power supply to use in xbox one s. "Microsoft Made in china. Chicony Power Technology Co., LTD. i have a picture. do you have this power supply? how much to send to brasil in this adress? Does anyone know where I can locate a New HDMI port for the Xbox One S ? Seems like a difficult part to locate. My Xbox One Keeps Tripping Off And A Technician Claims It's My Processor But Can't Fix It . Please Can You Help Me Out? My Xbox light won't come on and when I turn it on its on on for a brief moment then the Xbox shuts off. Is this my power supply or could it be something else as well. Background and Identification ¶ Released in August 2016, the Xbox One S is a major revision to the Original Xbox One (released in 2013). This model of Xbox One S is identified by the name Xbox One S on the top right hand corner on the backside of the device. Notable upgrades include a 40% size reduction, an integrated power supply, and native 4K video output for Blu-Ray playback and online video streaming. The standard Xbox One S ships in white alongside a redesigned Xbox wireless controller. It features a frontside USB 3.0 port, IR blaster, and controller sync button. Connectivity options are similar to the previous model, however the Kinect port has been replaced by a standard USB 3.0 port. The Xbox One S, unlike the Xbox One, has holes and dots on one half, and not the diagonal line and slits. The Xbox One S also has a large circle section beneath the holes that is used as the air vent to cool all the internal components. Xbox One S really does improve FPS, even if Microsoft doesn’t want to talk about it. By Brenna Hillier, Wednesday, 3 August 2016 03:44 GMT. Xbox One S smooths out some of the little wrinkles in the platform experience. Xbox One S has some extra power under the hood, but Microsoft has been very cagey about whether it does any good in terms of improving game performance. Well, it does: Eurogamer‘s Digital Foundry did some benchmarking tests and found the Xbox One S can improve frame rate by in certain situations. “At worst, Xbox One S operates exactly like the standard Xbox One. At best, we saw a 9fps ‘in the moment’ differential between both consoles running the same content,” the site said, commenting that even locked frame rate games which currently suffer FPS issues on Xbox One will see improvement. Although Xbox One S definitely doesn’t improve every game (Fallout 4 didn’t get any better, unfortunately), the team tested several titles with the following results: Project Cars first-person – average 7% improvement, spiking to 5fps Project Cars third-person – average 11% improvement, spiking to 9fps Hitman in unlocked frame rate mode – 6.1% improvement in cutscenes, 8.1% improvement in gameplay Resident Evil 5 Remastered – 2.5% improvement Tomb Raider – eliminates dips below 30fps lock Batman: Arkham Knight – 4% improvement, reduction in stutter Alan Wake’s American Nightmare (backwards compatible) – reduction in dips below 30fps lock. Digital Foundry also noted that Hitman ran 9% faster on Xbox One S than PS4 in certain situations. It’s really worthwhile clicking through above to see the details in context, as there’s some fascinating stuff about how Xbox One S’s extra GPU oomph comes into play – and where it doesn’t, bottlenecked by other aspects of the hardware. The report expresses surprise in the more dramatic performance boosts, as Microsoft itself talked down Xbox One S’s improvements. “Some games (ones that utilise dynamic resolution and/or unlocked frame-rates) may see a very minor performance improvement,” Microsoft’s Albert Penello said. “Our testing internally has shown this to be pretty minor, and is only measurable on certain games, so we didn’t want to make it a ‘selling point’ for the new console.” Sure – but it is going to be a selling point for some people anyway, isn’t it? It’s not yet clear whether the Xbox One S will replace the base Xbox One, but all titles are compatible between the two so there’s probably nothing to worry about yet. Final Fantasy XV HDR Support is confirmed for the Xbox One S console. Best Looking Indie Games of 2018. While compromising other settings. The gpu is the bottleneck. And the game already doesn't run that well. You pedestrians on here would watch a 4k slideshow lol. What does HDR have to do with 4k? You don't have to have 4k to run hdr but where can you find a 1080p television that features hdr? Read the sentence more carefully. It was meant just in general that you pedestrians on N4G rather have a higher resolution over frame-rate and other graphical settings. I value textures and frame rate over color and resolution. Not sure where you thought this game wasn't running through an upscale but okay lol. Games not even running 1080p ever on Xbox one. You uh, you do know that the word pedestrian means "a person walking along a road or in a developed area", and that it's not actually an insult, right? The One S should have never happened. Instead of one S it should be the Scorpio out right now. Game runs like crap on Xbox One. Actually no it doesnt. The game runs better than the PS4 version though. define "running better"? Well I'm playing on PS4 pro and I've played the game on xbox one. The Xbox version isn't in the same sentence. All I'm saying is they should have skipped the S and made the Scorpio. Then I'd most likely be playing on that. It definately runs better on the xbox one, as in frame pacing especially. resolution of course is the only real difference graphics wise. I wonder how the PS4 version would run if it ran sub 900p like the Xbox version. And a big difference it is, frame pacing can, and likely will be fixed. There's nothing they can do about it being a low res blurry mess though. Most of my games run great on the XB1. They run even better on the XB1 Slim. You obviously don't own one. Wrong, the Xbox One should have never happened, Instead, it should have been the Xbox One S from the beggining. Just saying, tvs have options to reduce lag. People can already experience hdr on the normal ps4. It may take a little more configuring but it's definitely not the issue you're making it out to be. I got the PS4 version just because that's the console all my other Final Fantasy games are on (Final Fantasy Type 0 HD, FFX/X-2, World of Final Fantasy, Final Fantasy XV). HDR is great for games. What is holding you back is you are relying on your TV to do too much. You also have a UHD that isn't really made for HDR. 1000 nits would be much more effective and a 4K capable console like the Pro would be a good investment. You want the signal going into the TV to be upscaled before it hits it. Amazon opens preorders for Final Fantasy XV Royal Edition. Future updates will introduce option to visually renovate the console operating system. Last updated by Rob Crossley on October 10, 2014 at 1:49AM. You are now subscribed. Monthly scheduled updates to Xbox One will soon add custom themes, backgrounds and wallpapers to the system's dashboard, the head of Xbox Phil Spencer has said. "I was told themes and background pics are something that we are working on and screenshots, you know people beat me up on screenshots," Spencer said on a recent Inner Circle podcast. He added: "The team has done a great job with the monthly updates, some of the things are just a prioritisation and are a time in development. But I know that people like to customize the look of their dash." No firm date or timeline was given on the addition of theme support for Xbox One, though Spencer pledged that they would arrive eventually. "I think both themes, backgrounds and screenshots are things I know people want so we are going to deliver on them. But we can’t give a when yet." Further to this, a spokesperson for Microsoft told IGN that theme support will be introduced in future monthly updates. "We’ve been carefully listening to your feedback and look forward to delivering many of those features and more as part of our regular Xbox One system updates," reads a statement form the company. Xbox One Elite Wireless Controller. Get more info. Critic 10 Reviews. Key Specs. Type Controller / gamepad Connection Wireless Console compatibility Microsoft. Is a gamepad worth $150? That's the question Microsoft is asking with the Xbox One Elite controller, a revamp of its almost two-year-old paddle that shipped with the Xbox One. The company isn't targeting this as a device for the mainstream, though. Rather, the Elite is instead for highly competitive gamers -- the type that'd mod their controllers with third-party accessories for greater precision. The customization it offers comes at a steep price, costing over twice as much as the standard $60 controller. Why should you care? Because the vanilla Xbox One controller feels like a cheap knock-off of the vaunted Xbox 360 pad that came before it. Microsoft said it spent over $100 million designing it, considering smell-o-vision and even a built-in projector for the gamepad, only to wind up with a mostly inferior clone. It has too many sharp edges, feels incredibly hollow and seems, well, cheap. Honestly, one of the biggest reasons I don't play my Xbox One much as my PlayStation 4 is because I prefer the latter's DualShock 4 controller. Keep all that in mind when you consider the following statement: I've been using the Elite controller for almost a week and I haven't wanted to put it down; this is the Xbox One gamepad we should've had from the outset. Engadget Score. Feels great in-hand; very grippy finish throughout Loads of customization options Mature, understated design Improves on the standard Xbox One gamepad in every way Bumper buttons are finally, actually usable. Expensive Levers and faceted d-pad don't feel secure Feels heavy at first Clamshell case doesn't keep everything in place Customization options could be overwhelming for some. The Elite controller is the best Xbox gamepad Microsoft has ever made, but it doesn't come cheap. At $150, your best bet is waiting for a price drop or a bundle deal unless you're dead-set on getting a leg up against folks online. Gallery: Xbox One Elite controller | 28 Photos. Out of the box, the Elite looks like a superficial upgrade. Aside from the 3.5mm headphone jack up front and the new slider control underneath and equidistant from the Menu and Options buttons, you'd be forgiven for confusing the Elite pad with the standard one. It's when you start futzing around with the different thumbstick options or snapping metal levers into the underside that the gamepad starts looking unique. The Elite comes with a clamshell case that has a molded space for the controller, a cargo pouch for spare earbuds, batteries and the pack-in, braided micro-USB cable (a requirement for most tournaments) that will tether the pad to a console. There's also a molded rubber holder that keeps the four control levers, two sets of thumbsticks and spare directional pad in place. The idea behind the latter is that it'll keep your extra parts secure during travel so they don't fall out after unzipping the case. In practice, everything stayed in place for me aside from the faceted directional pad -- its section is too loose to keep that from bouncing around. On the flip side, the cross-style option fit incredibly snugly. The first thing I noticed when I picked up the controller to pair it with my console was how heavy it was compared to the standard gamepad. Microsoft says that with all four levers attached, a pair of included Duracell AAs and standard thumbsticks, the Elite weighs 348 grams, give or take 15. That's 12.3 ounces compared to its predecessor's 9.9 ounces. Honestly, though, the only time I noticed was when I picked it up since more often than not, when I'm gaming, my hands rest in my lap. That heft likely comes from the Elite's revamped innards. The thumbsticks feel incredibly springy and precise, thanks to their metal construction. I've never been a fan of the sticks on the Xbox One pad. They've always felt rough and just weren't comfortable to me. With the Elite, I had the option of choosing among three different sets (standard, tall and a pair of convex heads) and changing them on the fly, but most of the time I was perfectly happy with the standard set. All are incredibly comfortable, though, and have the same premium feel as the rest of the controller. Customization station. Depending on the game, I opted for different configurations. For Halo 5: Guardians , I stuck a standard stick on the left and one of the twice-as-tall options on the right. With Forza Motorsport 6 , I reversed that. Why? With shooters, the extra height gave me more leverage and ensured I wouldn't hit a face button by accident while aiming my assault rifle at my quarry. In a racing game, the added height made steering a lot easier. Not only have the thumbsticks gotten an overhaul, but also the pots they sit in did too. Microsoft added a low-friction ring to where the stick makes contact with the faceplate and the result is pretty dramatic. Movement just feels smoother because the metal shafts glide effortlessly around when you're pushing them toward the edges. It makes using the controller a bit quieter, too. The sync button's now sharing a lime green hue with the d-pad socket, hair-trigger locks and contact points for the control levers. What are those? Metal pieces between an inch and an inch and a half long that act as secondary inputs for any button on the controller. There are four total (two angled, two straight) and you can arrange them in a number of different ways, some correct and others less so. It's possible, for example, to arrange them in a way where they'll overlap. Like the rest of the custom options, these hold in place magnetically and if you'd rather not use them, that's entirely up to you. One of my biggest complaints about the standard controller is how stiff the right and left shoulder buttons are. They have an incredibly narrow sweet spot to register a depression and using them has always felt really hit or miss to me, with the innermost edge being damn near impossible to press in. With the Elite, that gripe's been eliminated. Here, they're a little easier to press at their outermost edges, but even at the opposite end (where the actuators reside) it takes dramatically less effort and is more even all the way across. Both the shoulder buttons and the triggers below feature a matte silver finish versus the standard's slippery black gloss, and the latter's throw is about 3/16 of an inch shorter. And rather than the standard triggers' squishy feel, these make a firm click when you bottom out. The battery tray is in the same place as before, but now it has markers indicating what position the hair-trigger locks are in. Immediately on either side are the recessed metal knobs that take the analog triggers and dramatically reduce the distance you need to pull before your on-screen gun fires. I couldn't find a use for the faceted d-pad during my review, but supposedly it's better for pulling combos in fighting games. As a button masher (rest assured I'm not quitting my day job for eSports) it felt like the magnet was barely able to hold the concave piece of metal in place. Sure, it looks cool, but once I installed the metallic cross d-pad, I never took it out. The A, B, X and Y buttons changed from green, red, blue and yellow, respectively, to all black. And the aforementioned standard headphone jack rests off to the side of where the previously required headset adapter did on the standard controller, while a legacy connection for purpose-built headsets like the Astro A40 Xbox One Edition sits next to it. It's a smart move because it doesn't alienate anyone who bought a specific headset previously. To me, the standard controller has always felt like a prototype rather than a final product -- with its rough edges and other questionable design choices. That isn't the case here. The Elite features a soft rubber finish on a majority of its surface, with a more aggressive diamond-pattern grip where your palms rest underneath. The DualShock 4 has a textured underside too, but it can't hold a candle to this. For example, sliding the Elite across the glass desk in my home office proved pretty difficult. I might as well have been dragging a pencil eraser across it. Even after a four-hour Halo 5 session, the controller didn't feel like it'd slip out of my moist palms. The customization options don't stop with the hardware -- there's an app that gives you the chance to completely rebind every button's function (aside from Menu and Options) to a different one. Want the digital shoulder buttons to perform the trigger duties? I can't recommend that, but go right ahead. How about adjusting the A, B, X and Y buttons so they mimic Nintendo's non-standard layout? Have at it. Effectively, this gives you complete control of how your gamepad works, without being subject to the tyranny of pre-defined control schemes on a game-by-game basis. Gallery: Xbox Accessories app | 23 Photos. Beyond that there's a raft of other custom settings. The new slider button allows for swapping between two onboard control schemes, but you can create and save as many as you want to your system profile and access them from anywhere with an internet connection. There are independent adjustments for thumbstick sensitivity (slow start, fast start, instant, default) that govern how much distance the sticks need to travel before in-game movement registers. An option for adjusting trigger sensitivity and dead-zone is here too. Also, if you've ever wanted to turn down the haptic feedback, or turn it off completely, there's an option for that as well. Really, all that's missing is the ability to turn the guide button's light off completely and the option to permanently invert the right stick's Y-axis. The latter's especially puzzling considering you can swap left and right thumbstick assignments (so movement maps to the right stick and aiming goes to the left) within the app. Let's say you're like me and are incredibly overwhelmed by the complexity of remapping every button on the controller. That's where game developer-made presets come into play. There are only a handful available right now and they're all for first-party games like Halo , Forza 6 and Gears of War, but Microsoft promises more are en route for Star Wars: Battlefront III and Call of Duty: Black Ops III . The Halo 5 preset tailored to campaign mode, for instance, liberates squad commands and waypoint location from their cumbersome position on the d-pad to the control levers. Reaching down to the d-pad to tell Team Osiris to attack an enemy is awkward, but assigning that task to the levers makes perfect sense because it's always within reach. More dramatic is the difference the levers make in Forza 6, where they serve as paddle shifters and a clutch for manual transmissions. They're really useful; I've never been comfortable using a stick shift with a gamepad, but since I don't have the space in my apartment, a racing wheel isn't feasible. That isn't the case anymore. But, having all four levers in place (manual requires two; manual with clutch doubles that) clutters things up a bit. Anytime I put all four on regardless of the game, I ran the risk of accidentally pressing a few simultaneously. What's more, of everything on the controller, the levers feel most likely to fall off while playing because the magnets don't seem as strong as elsewhere on the gamepad. The previous controller's battery life is incredible, and after roughly 15 hours during my review, the fresh set of standard AAs had only worn down to 75 percent capacity. I have no doubt that the Elite will match or best its forebearer's battery lifespan, especially considering the options for adjusting haptic motor intensity. Again, is all of this worth $150? That answer depends on how much and what you play on Xbox One -- regardless of your pro-gaming aspirations. Even disregarding the hardware customization options, there are considerable improvements. Were the Elite a $30 premium over the standard controller instead of $90, my recommendation would be a lot easier. Instead I'm hesitant: One of the controllers will set you back almost half of what the console you'd use it with costs. Sure, the Elite doesn't feel like a cheap toy, but everyone else might want to hold out for a price drop considering that the customization app is coming for the standard controller too, and the rubber handgrips I'm so fond of exist on another official gamepad. If you've been waiting to buy an Xbox One, go for the upcoming Elite bundle that packs the controller and a console sporting a 1TB hybrid drive for $499 because for now the controller's price is too hard to justify on its own. Expand. Who likes cars, this is the game. Jogo otimo, acredito que o xbox Incredible, perfect gameplay ! Watching how AI drivers struggled with the new conditions was almost as much fun as amending my braking strategy. … Expand. The track list is nothing that new compared to previous games in the series, but there as a couple of tracks that are returning including Maple Valley. The different variations of each track is pleasing, but it would be nice to have a few more. In terms of cars, it's like a "copy and paste" including cars featured in Horizon 3 that are new to the Motorsport series, which I'm not overly fussed about. What is a little upsetting for me and a lot of players is the absence of Toyota's production cars (yes, you did read that right). Though you can't blame Turn 10 for this as from what I've read and heard, the Supra, Celica and many more aren't featured in any other new racing games, meaning Toyota is at fault here. Though I'd still be happy to jump back onto Horizon 3 and drive any of them. One of the issues I have is the numerous barriers on the tracks. Sure, they're there to stop players corner cutting, but they are quite annoying. Let's say you're in an online race and you get pushed wide mid-race into a tire wall. That's essentially race over. Some people may see this as an advantage over others, which is unfair if you understand where I'm going with that. It kinda takes away that authenticity of a track if you are a clean racer. If there weren't any tyre walls spread across the track, then at least there should be a penalty system like Gran Turismo has, where the penalty lasts for how big of an advantage you would get over everyone else. One of the main issues I have seen is the Prize Crates. If you don't want to buy one for mods or driver gear, just don't buy any! I'm not overly fussed about earning more credits or XP for completing a challenge throughout the race. Like me, if you're just in it for the racing and customisation, just ignore the Prize Crates. Speaking of customisation, it's just the same as Horizon 3; returning body parts and bodykits - a first for Motorsport. Overall, Forza Motorsport 7 is worth the money if you aren't that bothered about the minor issues and Prize Crates. … Expand. Cannot recommend this game at all. … Expand. I am playing the Forza titles since Forza 2 with great pleasure. I like how Forza 7 looks and I believe the sound details have been enhanced and make it a better experience. The actual gameplay, the in-game credits, drivatar gear, crates e.t.c. is something we all can argue about differently. But the bottom line for this game: It runs incredibly unstable, it crashes on me at least twice every session. It uses the "Left Stick" push button for the track vote and the sticks are simply not available on a wheel. Very frustrating for me as a wheel user. Forza Motorsport has become as popular as COD had been the shooters and they are milking it as good as they can instead of delivering a solid product to a loyal fan base. My suggestion: Get back to your roots! PS: The score of 3 points is only because you finally have my car in the game, the Opel Manta! I love you guys for doing that. … Expand. The selection of cars is good, I like the inclusion of the Hoonigan pack and the F&F vehicles too. It’s buggy, so far I have had to try and paint invisible cars, I have has the game crash several times and assorted other glitches. The homologation rules need to be scrapped, fine, if you’re running a single make championship then lock down the tuning creativity, but for class based racing this really irritating. Should have changed up the track selection, given this is a 100+ GB game, I think they’ve wasted so much space on Drivatar outfits, I would rather have spent my money on a ‘create your own track’ option. Oh, don't get me started on the loot crates nonsense. As of late, they added A class racing, but that's it. Until they fix that, the online play will be ruined for me and many others. As far as the career mode, its very repetitive and boring just like Forza 6. By trying to make the career mode seem more exciting, they actually made it worse. Forza 4, for me, had the best career mode simply because it was so simple and endless. I've played severe hours of all Forza motorsport, not horizon, since the first in the original xbox, I simply finished 1, 2 just 25%, 3 and 4 but I didn't played Forza since 4 that was a fully customizable game with no micro transaction (Forza 7 don't got now but there will be soon), no cards and no loot boxes and I ve bought the nurburgring DLC but I just can't believe people fall into that diabolical scheme and pay to win or to look better besides the game price, in this game you should be able to customize everything with no price, you cant customize your driver, for exemple, you need to buy or gamble with loot boxes, we should fight against gamble in this industry, the people who like games as a form of Art, creativity, Culture and entertainment don't support this kind of attitude from developers, we are educated and intelligent people who knows what we are consuming and we don't want any corporate policy to make any psychological game design to addict us and **** with our cognitive system, beyond this, The Price practices in Brazil, twice the price of F1 and project cars2 is unfair. Besides this annoying corporate scheme and ideological mislead from the original series, a MotorSPORT series it´s becoming a MOTORHORIZON series, The graphics are amazing, it performs good in the max setting in my PC, 4K 60fps is becoming a must for racing games, you gain a lot looking for the turn apex, 100 meters plaque and references on the horizon, the night transitions have amazing skyboxes and track lighting changes, the weather is good but don´t impress me and it is not dynamic but this is the best game to play in a gamepad, preferably the xbox one with rumble triggers, sensational for braking and acceleration feedback and there is no new generation game out there that you can play with a car you can buy or even with your own car. The presentations for the career is awesome, it improved a lot, still need some improvements, look the codemasters F1 series the best racing career ever with ambients and characters, rpg structure or even FIFA the journey with a great story line but in forza you still got ken block voice messages, story of other drivers, the graphic design for evething is amazing and the game design of the career is better than the past editions, for sure, excluding the inherent need for mods or loot boxes cards, pure gamble that leaves me to the question, I can´t understand, why the assists is no more a "MOD" to increase your earnings, because it should, you have to truly master the game and it is probably because they changed the system to allocate this microtransaction scheme, pay or gamble to win not play hard like a pro to win, why not the "mods" is your perfect curve, perfect pass, perfect drift, perfect draft, fastest lap, best sector, clean lap and if you bump each others cars, go out of the track, cut a curve, miss a gear, break too much, get passed you get a negative mod, that would be a motorsport series, go grab your filthy money on the horizon series. The best feature in forza games, for me, is the paint and apply decals, that changed nothing since forza 4, just added more community decals, it is not good but it still there and the way your design is offered for other players is rewarding because anyone can pick your design for a specific car without going to your front store and the game offer the option to give a like if you are using this design for some time, this is awesome, a incentive for creativity. The interesting and unique feature of Forza is to tune your car after hours of testing and setting up the differential, height, camber, wings and so on and them designing your car putting your mark, your signature, and go race on line. And the new homologation system is great because it brings the game more to the reality, the old system fits into the horizon series where you do crazy Scheisse, so there are people crying for nonsense cause, point for turn 10 when they bring the motorsport series to motorsport realit … Expand.
