Do not buy Unless ready to spend $250 for Adaptor. How could they sell the Kinect if they discontinued Adaptor for XBOX One S and XBOX One X, for which you have to at least $250=00. And the great funny thing is that I cannot find a "Request for Return" on the order history Page. Ridiculous Microsoft, that's why they are lacking in Smart Market competition. 3 out of 3 people found this helpful. Can't use for new systems unless you spend Hundreds. Really disappointing that even the adapter for the Xbox one x/s, which was being charged for since a port was lacking for no good reason on the new models, had been discontinued. Now I can't even use this piece of junk. Great job considering your consumers Microsoft. 3 out of 3 people found this helpful. Keep the Kinect technology! We love having the Kinect with our original Xbox One system. The spoken commands are very helpful and are useful with mobile disabilities. Just saying "xbox pause" is fantastic in Netflix. I am disappointed that a new Kinect device isn't available for the Xbox One X. We just purchased one and find that 1) we need to buy an adapter for the Kinect we already have and 2) we can not purchase a brand new one. The Kinect technology is great and should continue to be developed! Many thanks! 2 out of 2 people found this helpful. Kinect Adapter required to use this device not included. You should tell everyone that although you are still selling the kinect in local stores (and apparently online as posted here) they won't actually be able to use this device as microsoft has stopped making the adapter that is required to make the device work with your console. So, you may as well put $80.00 on top of your X Box and look at it. 5 out of 7 people found this helpful. I love Kinect. Microsoft didn't realize what they had. I love the Kinect. for 50 bucks, I can have somebody modify the cord so I can use it on my Xbox One X without buying the adaptor from a third party for over $200. I could do it myself, but 50 bucks is worth it. All you one star people can pound sand. One person found this helpful. Fire the Microsoft management team. I am beyond angry and ready to replace anything I have with Microsoft with Apple or another brand. I am in disbelief that you sell the Xbox one Kinect Sensor that is not compatible with the game console. I am now learning that I have to purchase an adapter that is being/has been discontinued for $230 which is more than the game console itself. The individual(s) making these decisions should be fired. I can't comprehend how you can make products not compatible with its accessories. One person found this helpful. Would be great if the adapter wasnt $250 rediculous. One person found this helpful. To use your existing Xbox One Kinect Sensor with a new Xbox One S or Xbox One X console, you'll need an Xbox Kinect Adapter. This adapter lets you connect your Xbox One Kinect Sensor to the Xbox One S or Xbox One X console. Note The Xbox 360 Kinect Sensor is not compatible with Xbox One. The Kinect Sensor and Kinect Adapter ceased manufacturing in November 2017. Microsoft no longer carries inventory of the Kinect Adapter. Customers can check other retail stores for Adapter availability. An offer for people with a Kinect Sensor upgrading from Xbox One ended in March 2017. Step 1: Set up the adapter. Plug the wall plug into the power supply. Insert the round connector of the power supply into the Kinect hub. Insert the Kinect sensor cable into the Kinect hub. Insert the included USB cable into the Kinect hub. You're now ready to connect the adapter to your console. Step 2: Connect the adapter to the Xbox One S or Xbox One X console. Insert the USB 3.0 cable into the left USB port labeled "Kinect" on the back of the console. Your Kinect sensor is now ready to be set up on your console. For best practice, make sure your Kinect sensor and Kinect Adapter are not sitting directly on top of your console. On your console, open the Guide and select System . Select All settings > Kinect & devices . Select Kinect and follow the instructions to set up your sensor. There can be several causes if your Kinect sensor is not responsive or is turned off when you try to use the Kinect Adapter. Try these solutions to fix the issue: Make sure the Kinect sensor is turned on in the console settings. Go to System > All settings > Kinect & devices > Kinect . Power cycle your console. Sometimes the connection between the sensor and the console needs to be reset. To do this, hard boot the console by holding down the power button for 5 seconds until the console shuts down. Disconnect the power supply from the console, and wait 1 minute before reconnecting and restarting the console. Check the connections of the sensor and adapter to make sure each connector is firmly attached. Make sure that the Kinect sensor and adapter are not placed directly on top of the console. The adapter must be powered to pass Kinect information to the console. Check the power supply of the adapter and make sure that the LED is lit. If you still have power issues after checking the power supply, reset the Kinect Adapter power supply by unplugging it for 10 seconds and plugging it back in. If the Kinect Adapter power supply light is not lit, there's no power getting to the power supply. Try another outlet or replace your adapter, if trying another outlet doesn't work. If the power supply light is orange, this means that the adapter is in standby mode and is waiting for the console to respond. Power cycle your console again. If the power supply light is white, this means there is power, and the sensor is active. Power cycling your console should also fix an unresponsive sensor that has power.

Kinect won't be sold in stores for much longer. Last updated by Chris Pereira on October 26, 2017 at 6:51AM. Please enter your date of birth to view this video. Microsoft's Kinect sensor, which sold millions across its Xbox 360 and Xbox One iterations but was often criticized, is officially dead. Ahead of its next earnings report later this week, the company has revealed that it has put an end to manufacturing of the device, meaning those still sitting on store shelves will be the last ones available for purchase. The news was shared by Kinect creator Alex Kipman and Xbox Devices Marketing GM Matthew Lapsen in an interview with Fast Company. Support for the device will continue, so there's no need--at least in the short term--to worry if you're someone who still enjoys playing the odd game that uses it or pausing Netflix with a voice command. This comes as little surprise. Originally launched partway through the Xbox 360's life cycle, Kinect sold millions and opened the platform to new types of games, like Dance Central. Microsoft then decided to make it a mandatory part of the Xbox One package, driving up the price of the system at launch to $500. It would later be made optional, allowing Microsoft to bring the price down and attempt to appeal to those with no interest in voice controls or motion sensors, though seemingly too late for the system to catch up to Sony's competing PS4 in terms of sales. If it had not already been clear, the future of Kinect came into focus when Microsoft released the Xbox One S, the first new iteration of Xbox One. The system revision lacked the necessary port for Kinect, necessitating the use of an adapter for those who still had one laying around. Similarly, the upcoming Xbox One X lacks an integrated Kinect port. Kinect's non-gaming applications have proven to arguably be more useful, even providing medical uses. And while the device itself may now effectively be dead, the technology behind it will live on, as aspects of it are used to power Microsoft's HoloLens augmented reality device. Privacy by Design: How Xbox One and the New Kinect Sensor Put You in Control. Xbox One and Kinect offer easy and approachable ways to control your games and entertainment with your voice and gestures. By recognizing you, Xbox One can tailor personal experiences and customize content just for you. At Microsoft, we prioritize your privacy. We understand that your personal data and privacy are important. Xbox One and Kinect will provide tools to put you in control of your data. These include: You are in control of what Kinect can see and hear: By design, you will determine how responsive and personalized your Xbox One is to you and your family during setup. The system will navigate you through key privacy options, like automatic or manual sign in, privacy settings, and clear notifications about how data is used. When Xbox One is on and you’re simply having a conversation in your living room, your conversation is not being recorded or uploaded. You are in control of when Kinect sensing is On, Off or Paused: If you don’t want the Kinect sensor on while playing games or enjoying your entertainment, you can pause Kinect. To turn off your Xbox One, just say “Xbox Off.” When the system is off, it’s only listening for the single voice command — “Xbox On,” and you can even turn that feature off too. Some apps and games may require Kinect functionality to operate, so you’ll need to turn it back on for these experiences. You are in control of your personal data: You can play games or enjoy applications that use data, such as videos, photos, facial expressions, heart rate and more, but this data will not leave your Xbox One without your explicit permission. Here are a few examples of potential future scenarios: A fitness game could measure heart rate data to provide you with improved feedback on your workout, allow you to track your progress, or even measure calories burned. A card game could allow you to bluff your virtual opponent using your facial expressions. You can use other inputs to control your games, TV and entertainment experiences: While it’s faster to find what you’re looking for using your voice and gesture commands with Kinect, you can use a controller, your remote controls or your smart devices instead. And you can use all of these devices when Kinect is paused. We’ll have more information available as we get closer to product availability later this year. Xbox One S console has no Kinect port, requires USB adapter (update) Get a free adapter from Microsoft. If you already own an Xbox One Kinect and you're thinking of upgrading to the redesigned Xbox One S console, you should know that the upcoming system is the first Xbox One model to ship without a Kinect port. "In order to make the Xbox One S as compact as possible and make all of these updates, we removed the dedicated Kinect port from the back," said Matt Lapsen, general manager of marketing for Xbox devices, in a post on the Xbox Wire. It will still be possible to use a Kinect with the white console, although you'll need an adapter in order to plug the Kinect into one of the Xbox One S unit's three USB 3.0 ports. The accessory in question, the Kinect Adapter for Windows, regularly costs $49.99. Microsoft will be offering the adapter for free, but only to Xbox One S buyers who already own an Xbox One and an Xbox One Kinect. Eligible customers will be able to order the free adapter on this page once the offer goes live. For now, Microsoft is recommending that interested parties ensure that the serial numbers for their current Xbox One and Kinect sensor are registered with the company's device support site. When Microsoft launched the Xbox One in November 2013, every console came with a Kinect in the box, and the company presented the device as an essential peripheral. Over time, Microsoft gradually moved away from its emphasis on the Kinect. Last October, the company told Polygon that a "vast majority" of Xbox One Kinect owners still use the peripheral, but there are no Kinect games currently in development for the console. At launch, the Kinect was a major piece of Microsoft's push for cable TV functionality. The peripheral features a built-in IR blaster, which allows the Xbox One to control other home theater equipment. An IR blaster is integrated into the front of the Xbox One S, and the back of the unit still features HDMI-in and HDMI-out ports, so the console can still control other devices even if a Kinect isn't plugged in. (The system also includes a port on the back for external IR blasters.) For more on the Xbox One S and Project Scorpio, check out the video below. You can see an image of the Xbox One S console's rear ports above. Microsoft plans to launch the Xbox One S in August. Update: Sometime after the Xbox One S debuts, Microsoft will begin shipping Kinect sensors with the USB adapter in the box, said Jeff Henshaw, group program manager for Xbox, in an interview with Polygon at E3. Henshaw added that Microsoft will sell that bundle for less than the stand-alone Kinect's current price of $99.99. Correction: The Xbox One S console has three USB 3.0 ports, one on the front and two on the back. We've edited the article to reflect this. Update 2 (Aug. 2): Xbox One S buyers who don't already own an Xbox One and an Xbox One Kinect will need to purchase the Kinect Adapter for Windows if they want to use a Kinect with the Xbox One S console. Microsoft has dropped the price of the accessory — it is now available for $39.99, $10 cheaper than before, on the Microsoft Store. As for customers who are eligible for a free Kinect adapter, Microsoft is now telling them to contact Xbox support to request the accessory. Is a Kinect for Xbox One Worth the Money? When the Xbox One debuted in November 2013, you couldn’t buy it without a Kinect sensor in the box. Microsoft billed the Kinect as an integral part of the Xbox One system and assured customers it would be used in all sorts of interesting ways. Things have changed a lot since those days. The PlayStation 4 took an early lead in console sales, thanks in part because it cost $100 less than the Xbox One with Kinect. Microsoft took a cold, honest look in the mirror and decided it needed to match the PS4’s price to become a contender, so it began offering a version of Xbox One without Kinect. That brings us to today. Potential Xbox One customers are now faced with a choice: Buy a console with Kinect for $450, or buy a Kinect-free console for $350. It can be a tough decision, but we’ll look at the pros and cons and see if the Kinect for Xbox One is worth the cost. What does the Kinect do? Like a game controller, the Kinect is an input device for the Xbox One. It can be used to identify who’s playing the Xbox One, to sense the position of your body to control things on the screen, and to listen and react to voice commands. If you buy an Xbox One with a Kinect bundled in, it adds $100 to the price of the console. If you buy a Kinect for Xbox One separately, it costs $150. That means if you haven’t bought an Xbox One yet, it would be wise to make the decision before you buy the console. It also means that the device is not cheap. Kinect games. For many people, the value of the Kinect comes from the games with which it’s compatible. Here are some of the standout games released so far that use the Kinect as their primary input device. Judging by those scores, it’s not exactly a parade of classics! But if you want to use the Xbox One as a part of your workout routine, a Kinect will go a long way toward helping you achieve that goal. Some other games use the Kinect as an optional input device, but it’s mostly limited to voice commands that you can also implement using a controller. Other considerations. Space in your room – One important consideration when thinking about buying a Kinect is whether you have enough space for it. Playing games using the Kinect means you have to stand far enough away from the device that it can “see” your entire body, and that you have enough room to flail your limbs as required by Kinect-compatible games. Microsoft suggests standing at least 4 feet, 7 inches from the Kinect for single-player games, and 6 feet away for multiplayer games. If your gaming space can’t accommodate those minimum requirements, you should probably hold off on buying a Kinect. Navigating the UI – As it stands now, the Xbox One’s user interface (UI) was designed to be used with the Kinect. It lets you launch apps, “snap” apps, and record snippets of gameplay just by uttering a few words. Without a Kinect, doing those things takes more time, and requires you to pick up the controller. On the other hand, since unbundling the Kinect in 2014, Microsoft has been using its monthly software updates to make the UI more controller-friendly. Xbox One as entertainment hub – If you plan to use the Xbox One as the centerpiece of your entertainment setup, you’ll want to consider buying a Kinect. The Kinect is used to send signals to your cable box, TV, and receiver. If you don’t have a Kinect, you’ll have to keep those remotes handy. Future prospects. Here’s some bad news. Originally, Microsoft promised developers that everyone with an Xbox One would have a Kinect. That was a great incentive for game makers to incorporate Kinect functionality in their games. Now that Microsoft has unbundled the Kinect, developers can no longer assume players have the device, which removes most of the incentive for developers to make use of it. The Kinect has effectively become an expensive add-on, which makes it very likely that fewer games will use Kinect in the future. Bottom line. If you have a specific reason to want a Kinect, like you want to incorporate the Xbox One into your workout routine, or you want to be able to navigate the console’s user interface using your voice, then you’ll get plenty of use from the device. But if your goal is to use it as an input device to play games, you might want to hold off. Very few upcoming Xbox One games will use the Kinect in any significant way. In all likelihood, the Kinect for Xbox One will become ever less necessary, just as the original Kinect did for Xbox 360. The Kinect is great for a few specific uses. But in today’s Xbox One gaming landscape, it’s definitely not essential.
