The set-top box is adding game titles and has a new partnership. Amazon.com 's (NASDAQ:AMZN) Fire TV has always been a bit more than just a set-top box for streaming video. When launched, it was already a sort of mini gaming console, with some titles requiring the purchase of a game controller and others using the device's simple remote control. Fire TV allows users to play a number of games on their television, including many that became popular on tablets. Fire TV brought Minecraft to the living room without players needing a Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) Xbox or a Sony (NYSE:SNE) PlayStation. That's a small step, as Minecraft -- although incredibly popular -- is a relatively simple game. But Amazon has pushed things even farther. It already has brought some older console titles, including a number of the Grand Theft Auto games, to Fire TV. Now, a new partnership will enhance the selection of top-tier titles on the platform. What did Amazon do now? Using the GameFly service, customers can play top quality PC titles, including Warner Brothers' acclaimed Batman series , Darksiders II , and Dirt 3 . Customers can use the GameFly service with the Amazon Fire TV Game Controller, which is available for $39.99. As we recently covered in our detailed review of the powerful new Microsoft Xbox One S game console, it has finally arrived on sale and for delivery and with the promise of 4K content streaming support, high dynamic range and support for 4K Blu-ray discs. The new console even supports 4K upscaling of Full HD 1080p games as a cool new added bonus. However, for the content options in 4K and HDR from Netflix, there is a minor catch right out of the box. Basically, in order for the Netflix app of the One S to offer its 4K HDR content to those of you who have an ultra HD TV with HDR to go with your new console, you’ll have to first download the updated Netflix app version manually. This can be done in the Xbox Store through the console’s user interface and in order to access the 4K and HDR of the app, you’ll also have to make sure that you’ve gotten a subscription to the premium Netflix package instead of the ordinary one. Only the premium Netflix subscription offers streaming of 4K and HDR ultra HD and as a bonus, it allows for streaming to four different display devices at the same time. Aside from all this, we should also note, as we did in our review of the Xbox One S, that the console requires a 4.5GB out-of-the-box update before it can even recognize 4K UHD content from streaming or Blu-ray disc media. Basically, new buyers of the One S will have to first update the device itself and then go ahead and get the Netflix app update as a followup before 4K goodness can start flowing to their TV screen. Xbox One S for now only offers 4K UHD video streams from Netflix and support for ultra HD Blu-ray disc content but the inclusion of Amazon Prime Instant Video UHD entertainment is in the works and we’ll probably see other streaming apps arrive to the console down the road. We should also note that these 4K and high dynamic range options from the Netflix app and the Xbox One S itself are only playable on ultra HD TVs with HDR10 high dynamic range content support. The Xbox one S offers optical out, I have an older top of the range Pioneer Elite Receiver that doesn’t have HDMI, I have the xbox one s going to TV via HDMI and sound via optical to receiver. I setup our new 4K TV, with Xbox One S, Satelite, Blue Ray Player, Surround Sound. All audio that gets sent to the TV, whether through Composite, HDMI, etc all gets sent to the surround system through Optical. the sound from the TV alone was horrible (Tin Box sound) but now Sounds perfect. I can’t seem to figure out how to get the updated version of Netflix downloaded. No option for UHD.
