Top 50 Best Couch Co-op Games on Xbox One.
It’s better to play together.
Couch Co-Op on the Xbox One.
With the rise of online gaming, couch co-op seems to be falling to the wayside in recent years. Fortunately enough there are still some really great games to play on the Xbox One that allow you to pull up with a buddy on your comfy couch and dive right in.
Overcooked on Xbox One – Overcooked is one seriously intense cooking game. Think Cooking Mama, only with a much higher difficulty, partners yelling expletives at one another, and mad dashes to get dishes complete. It’s a definite good time that’s sure to fill the room, with laughter, yelling, a bit of cursing, then more laughter.
Rocket League – If you haven’t played Rocket League, you definitely need to rectify that. Once you get a hang of the responsive controls and the sick, flipping, rocket powered vehicles, it’s time to dive into some couch co-op multiplayer to take on the world with a buddy. The amount of skill and precision needed really lends itself well to the feeling of accomplishment when you and your friends pull of some insane stunts out on the pitch.
EA Sports – Whether you’re into Madden, FIFA, or any other sport offered by EA, you’re sure to have some fun sitting down for some multiplayer as you and a friend decimate rival teams in some couch co-op. Just pick your favorite sport, sync up a second controller, and get ready for some fun.
Diablo III -Blizzard’s Diablo III is one of the most fun, isometric, action RPGs out there. The best part? It has online and couch co-op. Join your fellow nephalem as you try out different classes, create powerful warriors, and take the fight to hell and heaven. We suggest upping the difficulty to get the most out of this hack and slash experience.
PvZ: Garden Warfare 2 – Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare was a bit of an oddity when it was first introduced. But, over time and with some solid third-person shooter gameplay it quickly became a beloved title on the Xbox One. The second game ups the ante with a wide open world, tons of activities, and fun horde mode action that you can tackle in couch co-op for some multiplayer fun.
Rayman Legends -Top tier platforming? Check. Beautiful visuals? Check. Fun characters racing along to some seriously good music? Double Check. Rayman Legends is a must have on any platform, and the couch co-op just makes it all the more better. Have fun collecting Lums, beating enemies, and just bouncing around in this stellar platformer from Ubisoft.
Borderlands: The Handsome Collection – Borderlands is a first-person shooter RPG that’s full of endless enemies, gigantic bosses, and tons of loot. While it’s plenty of fun on its own, bringing along a friend for some crazy adventures that include shooting psychos and other dangerous denizens is a real treat.
Castle Crashers – Don’t let the cutesy art style of Castle Crashers fool you. This is one seriously challenging beat ’em up that will have you looking for help at every turn. The best way to find said help is to have a buddy grab a controller and pull up on the couch right next to you. Time to go save some princesses… and collect tons of gold.
Lara Croft: The Temple of Osiris – When looking at the Tomb Raider spin-offs you may not expect a truly great game, but you’d be doing yourself a disservice. These isometric, multiplayer action games are very easy to get sucked into. With constant puzzles and deadly threats, you and a co-op partner will have many hours of fun.
Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition -Metroidvania games are amazing, there’s no two ways about it. Combining them with a fully melee focused combat system makes it even better. How about forming a tag-team with a sibling, significant other, or best friend to prove who’s really the wrestling champion of the underworld.
LEGO games – There’s a long list of LEGO games that you really can’t go wrong on. Covering things like Star Wars, Marvel, DC, Jurassic Park, and many other properties thanks to the likes of LEGO Dimensions. They offer tons of content that is always family friendly, and the fact that you can play couch co-op makes them great for a night with the kids or with just about anyone. It’s not punishing since you can instantly revive after accidents, so it’s all the fun without any frustration.
Divinity: Original Sin – Isometric RPGs are always great for couch multiplayer because they allow a clear view of the action for all players. Divinity: Original Sin takes things a step further with its dynamic hybrid camera that splits up when you and your partner want to go to different areas. Of course, we wouldn’t recommend it solely for the camera. The gameplay is full of healthy challenges, tons of customization, and a true RPG experience for you and your friends.
Enter the Gungeon -Twin-stick shooters, bullet hell, and rogue-likes combine for one seriously extreme indie experience. You can unlock the ability to play couch co-op which ups the ante for an endless stream of bullets and powerful enemies filling your screen.
Minecraft: Xbox One Edition – There’s a reason Minecraft is so huge. It’s a really fun game no matter how you decide to play it. Whether you search for the end or just try to build seemingly impossible structures, it’s all a great experience especially when you bring in a second creative mind. You can even do couch co-op while playing with players from other platforms soon including the Switch, PC, and Mobile alongside the Xbox One.
Star Wars: Battlefront – Star Wars: Battlefront won’t let players dive into the competitive multiplayer side of things from a single couch, but you can go through the different waved-based modes together and have fun wrecking Storm Troopers and anything else that gets in your way. There’s always something to enjoy in Star Wars, so have fun using the force.
The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth – The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth is a good enough game on its own thanks to the rogue-like mechanics, twisted imagery, and brutal challenge it presents to players. You don’t have to live through the nightmare alone though. You can bring a friend and both suffer at the horrors of hell and Isaac’s vivid imagination as you escape the clutches of dear ‘ol mom.
Octodad: Dadliest Catch – If you thought controlling Octodad on your own was difficult, plug in a second controller for some couch co-op play. As you each take on half of the protagonists body you’ll have to coordinate in order to move through the world and complete challenges without raising too much suspicion. It’s a test in patience and wits and makes for one damn good time.
Call of Duty: Black Ops III – While many wouldn’t expect it from a Call of Duty game, all of the modes in Black Ops III support split-screen, couch co-op as well as online multiplayer. You can play through the campaign with a friend, or even dive into zombies and competitive multiplayer. It scratches several different types of itches allowing you to have some fun while hanging out at home with some friends.
Gears of War: Ultimate Edition – You actually have several options when it comes to Gears of War and couch co-op on the Xbox One. Gears of War: Ultimate Edition offers up the original games for you to dive into, and the brand-new Gears of War 4 lets you take the fight to the Swarm with a buddy to watch your back.
Halo: The Master Chief Collection – While Halo 5: Guardians may have skipped over the feature, the previous Halo games offered some couch multiplayer to let local players experience the epic story. Thankfully, the full series was remastered and released on the Xbox One as the Master Chief collection so you have all the games in one neat package.
Tumblestone – Tumblestone is a very fast paced game that plays like a cross between Tetris and your favorite match-three puzzle game. While it looks like a simple puzzle game, it actually has a story full of challenges (including boss battles) that you can tackle with a friend.
Lovers in a Dangerous Space Time – While many cooperative games give each player their very own vessel to pilot or their own mini-screen, Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime forces players to work together aboard one ship as they manage its systems and man the guns around the vehicle in order to fight off enemies in a cool, neon-colored world. It’s pretty, fun, and challenging, which is perfect for a game to play while hanging out.
Kalimba – Kalimba is not for the faint of heart. It’s a tough puzzle platformer that has you simultaneously controlling two totems as you navigate tricky stages. One slip up, and you’re done. Throw in another player and it becomes even more challenging, which happens to be part of its charm. Communication, and a high level of skill are required, so if you and a friend feel you got both in spades, put it to the test and see if your totems (and your friendship) survives.
Resident Evil on Xbox One- There are a few Resident Evil games that let you team up with a friend locally to face the infected masses, such as RE5 and RE6. Communicating with someone nearby and giving your once useless partner a bit of purpose definitely makes for a far better experience than playing either of those two titles alone.
TowerFall Ascension – TowerFall is a game that was built for couch co-op, so there was no way we could complete a list without it. Its fast paced, frenetic gameplay makes for fun, challenging levels that push player skill and reflexes to their limits. The fact that you can “accidentally” kill your partner just adds to the tension.
Surviving harsh environments while being accosted by deadly, flesh-eating monsters is always fun. 7 Days to Die provides plenty of means to do this, and you can even bring a friend along for some couch-co-op when playing on the Xbox One.
BADLAND: Game of the Year Edition.
Love puzzles set in a stark,, overbearing world where even the slightest mistake can send you to your doom? Love bringing along another player so you can have help figuring said puzzles out while you laugh at each other’s demise? Pick up BADLAND and see just how good at navigating dark worlds you are.
Dynasty Warriors 8: Empires.
Dynasty Warriors has always provided endless fun with all of its hack and slash mayhem. You can a friend can play locally and become enthralled in all of the fancy attacks and massive combos as you decimate entire armies with ease.
Dungeon Defenders II.
Dungeon Defenders II mixes a few genres together in order to make a solid, horde fighting, RPG experience that uses tower defense mechanics as well. You and a friend can come up with strategies and coordinate efforts to stop enemies trying to destroy your Eternia Crystal.
Hyper Light Drifter.
Hyper Light Drifter is a challenging game that tests your reflexes and ability to fight under pressure. With death being easy, but combat being so fun it’s easy to not want to put the controller down even, even when you have company. Thankfully, there’s couch co-op to let any guests dive in and share in the fun encounters.
Gunscape lets players create FPS levels and fill them with various threats and enemies to take out. You can then share them with the world as you yourself try out the levels created by others with your friends.
Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions.
While the competitive aspect of Geometry Wars 3 is hard to resists, you can stop trying to dwarf your friends’ scores from time to time to engage in some fun couch co-op.
You know what’s more fun than running around a city causing mayhem as a goat? Bringing along some friends to partake in the action. Goat Simulator lets you and some local buddies tear up the town as you lick, bash, and ram your way to a high score.
Marvel Ultimate Alliance.
If you’re into action RPGs that offer large rosters of characters to use and level up, you may want to give Marvel Ultimate Alliance a gander. You and up to three friends can take on the world as some of your favorite Marvel heroes, coordinating your abilities for massive damage and deciding once and for all who’s the best of them all.
Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2.
The second game in the series keeps things pretty similar with a few additions. One of the biggest is fusion attacks which let two players combine their attacks to create a new, stronger ability. It adds some more strategy to the experience while keeping the focus on team action.
Portal Knights mixes elements of a few different games to provide a fun experience for either solo players or groups of friends. You can explore and build your world like in Minecraft, but at the core is a solid RPG that will keep you and your friends fighting for hours to get stronger.
Super Dungeon Bros.
Take a bunch of rocking bros out into some classic hack and slash action reminiscent of games like Gauntlet and Diablo. There’s a bit more humor here, and it isn’t as deep as the previously mentioned games, but there is fun to be had.
Super Mutant Alien Assault.
Bring a friend as you take on powerful waves of enemies that just don’t quit. Endless, challenging, fast-paced combat will keep you and your buddies on your toes as you destroy alien scum in beautiful, 2D levels.
Another action RPG that’s all about kicking ass, leveling up, and grabbing epic loot. These experiences never get old, and bringing a friend just makes it all the more fun.
Like Minecraft in the sense that you build you harvest resources in order to build just about anything you can imagine. However, this 2D experience houses even more threats and bigger monsters to contend with as you fight to make a home and not get killed in the process.

If Zombies isn’t your thing, Black Ops III even lets you play the entire campaign with a friend.
The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited – The Elder Scrolls doesn’t seem like a series that would support an MMO quite well, especially since the games were all about discovery and sort of building your own experiences as well. Yet Bethesda and Zenimax have managed to capture the openness, sense of discovery, and challenging combat of the single player series while making it fun for thousands of players to jump in and enjoy at once.
Borderlands: The Handsome Collection – If you like shooting wacky enemies, tough robots, and huge beasts while also collecting what seems like billions of guns, Borderlands is your game. GTA Online – You know what’s better than causing mayhem in a city as you take on civilians and the law and rob banks? Doing it with other players in a sort of MMO like way. That’s what GTA Online offers as Rockstar allows players to create their own characters and work to become the baddest criminal in all of Los Santos.

Octodad- If you thought controlling everyone’s favorite disguise-wearing octopus was hard in single-player, just wait until you try it out in co-op. Up to four players can each control one of Octodad’s limbs (or two players will control a set each). It’s weird, wonderful, and offers plenty of comic relief in its bizarre controls.
Fortnite Battle Royale- Fortnite Battle Royale essentially took the popular battle royale formula popularized by PUBG and added its own base building spin on proceedings. Group up with three others (or duo up with another player) and eliminate the other teams in this online multiplayer shooter.
Fortnite – If the battle royale gameplay isn’t your jam, the original Fortnite is currently in early access via the Xbox Preview program. This PvE mode tasks players with building large forts and protecting them against hordes of incoming zombie-like enemies.
Best Xbox One Co-Op Games.
Friday 13th – Though Friday the 13th might not always be an Xbox One co-op experience (if you’re playing as Jason), when you’re a counselor working with the others to try and escape, there’s nothing quite like it. For a tense and spooky co-op experience, get some friends together and hop into Friday the 13th.
Ghost Recon Wildlands – With a huge sprawling world, plenty of missions and side quests to complete, and a bunch of explosives and vehicles at your disposal, Ghost Recon: Wildlands has plenty to offer players.
Left 4 Dead 2 – It may not have officially released on the Xbox One, but thanks to backwards compatibility, one of the best co-op shooters of our time is still available to play with friends. Left 4 Dead 2 pits up to four players in co-op against fairly lengthy storylines teeming with zombies to be shot down. Just make sure to stick together, you’ll be overwhelmed by zombies otherwise.
Rayman Legends -Rayman Legends offers up some classic platforming action on Xbox One all wrapped up with stunning visuals and a catchy soundtrack. The co-op mode in the game allows two players to beat enemies, scale obstacles, and collect Lums together. What more could you ask for?
PUBG – PUBG has finally arrived on Xbox One via the Xbox Preview program. Though the game is still in early access it offers up Duo and Squad co-op game modes for the battle royale action. Communicate, stick together, and be the last team standing.

GamesRadar+
The 25 best co-op games to play right now.
Whether your pal is right there on your sofa, or joining you from the other side of the globe, these are the virtual worlds you should explore together.
It takes two. sometimes three or four.
For some, games are a deeply personal, very private thing. For many, though, they're something to be shared, talked about, and played with others. Sorry lone-wolves, but this feature isn't for you. This is all about the games you can play with friends (and total strangers), where you team up to tackle specific goals or just blast waves and waves of AI baddos.
Doesn't matter if your buddies are on the same sofa, or half-way across the world - as long as you play cooperatively, rather than against each other. This list focuses on the games you can play right now, on your various consoles, so don't expect to see older, less accessible titles here or co-op blasts from your past.
Nioh took the unconventional Dark Souls formula for co-op play and expanded on it in some interesting ways. More importantly, they made it much easier (read: possible) to hook up with your friends online, and then provided a wealth of content to blaze through together.
Whether you're hacking your way through Nioh's terrifying bosses or taking on the punishing Yokai Realms, Nioh provids plenty of incentive to tackle its steep difficulty ramp with friends.
24. Fortnite.
Even still in Early Access, Epic's charming new base-defense/shooter/survival game hybrid is a better platform for cooperative play than many full releases. Not only does playing with a handful of friends give you a better chance to fend of waves of husks or construct the ultimate base, those friends can also provide you valuable XP boosts and a better chance to nab some of Fortnite's massive catalog of rare loot.
Fortnite is a shining example of a game that gets more fun the more friends you have playing with you, and is only lingering this far back on our list because it's not quite feature complete yet. Plus, it's popular Battle Royale mode is totally free, representing the perfect opportunity to jump in with a squad and compete together.
23. Spelunky.
What's better than exploring a randomly-generated series of caves filled with dangerous creatures and obstacles? Well, er, quite a few things, actually. The answer we were looking for is: exploring a randomly-generated series of caves filled with dangerous creatures and obstacles with a friend . Yeah? Ok, this joke has out-stayed its welcome.
Grinding through Spelunky solo is a tough gig, as the game can be unforgiving at times, so taking a buddy along for the ride is a good call - especially if you make use of the various abilities they can bring.
22. Pit People.
From the people behind another co-op classic, Castle Crashers, Pit People is one of the most pleasant surprises of 2017 thus far. On top of its charming art style, genuinely amusing writing, and deceptively simple gameplay, Pit People gives you the rare opportunity to play a tactics game with friends.
The ability to sit back and strategize with another player before you commit to a plan of attack makes cutting a bloody swath through a horde of delightfully bizarre foes even more wildly entertaining.
21. Broforce.
This is a side-scrolling shooter, deliberately designed to evoke memories of both classic games like Metal Slug and Contra, and fist-bumping '80s action movies like Commando and The Delta Force. It's one of the easiest games on this list to drop in and out of at a minute's notice - you and a friend can just shoot the crap out of a level in five to ten minutes and feel good about yourselves.
Sure, high five each other, why not? Characters have amusing names designed to ape '80s action icons (Bronan the Brobarian and Brobocop are highlights), but their cutesy pixellated designs belie an incredibly challenging game.
20. Uncharted: The Lost Legacy.
While the Uncharted games are played principally for its story, Uncharted: The Lost Legacy also boasts some great co-op options (most of which are cribbed straight from Uncharted 4). The core is a traditional horde mode called Survival that lets up to three players battle it out against waves of enemies.
Rather than just making it a foe-killing grind, though, you get specific objectives every now and then, like nabbing a specific item of treasure from the map, or defeating a marked enemy within a time-limit. The Lost Legacy adds a new twist called Survival Arena with new enemies, siege zones, and a pack of new modifiers that keep things fresh across 100 enemy waves.
19. Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris.
This Tomb Raider spin-off is all about tackling puzzles with friends, so don't expect the series' traditional ledge-jumping, mercenary-murdering gameplay here. What you do get in Temple of Osiris - or Guardian of Light, the original - is a bunch of tricky puzzle rooms (interspersed with some not-all-that-great combat) that require your characters' various abilities to solve and survive.
There's a real beauty in working out how everything fits together, and the only thing this game truly lacks is personality. But when you've got friends to fill in the narrative gaps with their own personalities, this becomes much less of a problem.
18. Call of Duty: Zombies Chronicles.
Really, you can still play zombies mode on any Call of Duty game and still have an absolute blast, but Chronicles is kind enough to collate all the best maps from World at War through to Black Ops 2 and provide a fresh coat of paint for the audio and visuals.
All eight maps benefit from all the new features Black Ops 3 introduced, making them all feel even spookier than their original iterations (and with a much greater potential for diversity). Some people now buy Call of Duty exclusively for the zombies stuff, and the wealth of options - including insane power-ups and weapons - now make this a game in its own right.
17. Far Cry 4.
Far Cry 4's Tibetan open-world is a vast, beautiful place to explore. so why play tourist with a friend? Sure, that means you can both drink in the breathtaking mountain vistas, but you can also cause twice the mayhem.
Shooting up mercenaries here is entertaining, but crafting elaborate schemes with a buddy to drive an angry elephant through an enemy camp (for example) is the real joy of Far Cry 4's co-op.
16. Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2.
If you've never sat on a couch and played a Lego game with your child, friend, sibling, or significant other, you're really missing out on the great things in life. Yes, there are a ton of co-op Lego titles out there, but the most recent one - Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2 - is our new favourite.
You get to play as just about any Marvel character you can think of, from Rocket Raccoon to Squirrel Girl. The cute aesthetic, simple gameplay, and adorable cutscenes are incredibly charming, and they can be enjoyed by everyone. Except people who hate Marvel, whoever the hell they are.
Play it on: PC, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch.
15. Friday the 13th: The Game.
A bit of an odd choice for a best of co-op list because of its asymmetrical gameplay, Friday the 13th makes our list because when you're on team counsellor, working together with other players is not only essential, it makes for some of the most interesting coop interactions in gaming.
From attempting to lure Jason across the map while other players gather critical items, to using Tommy Jarvis as the lynchpin for a desperate attempt to finally take down everyone's favourite invincible goalie, playing with others at Camp Crystal Lake is (almost) as rewarding as it is dangerous.
14. Monster Hunter Generations.
There's something insanely satisfying about working with your friends to bring down enormous enemies in games. Feats you thought previously impossible become realistic goals when theres a bunch of you working together.
You could probably pick any Monster Hunter game to capture this cooperative spirit, but our favourite is Monster Hunter Generations on 3DS. It supports local and WiFi play, so you don't necessarily need to be in the same room, and it looks ace in 3D. Plus, it's huge, so there is plenty to pick at here.
13. Sonic Mania.
Playing as a backup or supplemental character in co-op is rarely as appealing as being in the spotlight, but Sonic Mania manages to make flitting around as Tails almost (or even more) fun than being the Blue Blur himself.
You get to smoke enemies with your lethal, eponymous appendage without fear of retribution and, if you're feeling charitable, even lift player one out of danger or safely above deadly obstacles. Being an invincible, dangerous ghost is just as fun as it sounds, and it hearkens back to the great 2D Sonic titles of the Genesis era.
Play it on: PS4, Xbox One, PC, Nintendo Switch.
12. Tom Clancy's The Division.
No, Tom Clancy's The Division isn't quite as accomplished as other co-op open-world games like Destiny 2, but it's still enormous fun to play (and you can now pick it up real cheap). Set in a post-virus-apocalypse New York, you take up the mantle of a Division soldier sent to restore order and help the surviving civilians. Open play can be tackled solo, but missions really require you to team up and smash through a serious wall of bad-guys.
Your various skill sets combine to make you and your buddies a proper team here, the third-person shooting stands up really well in collaborative play, and the loot that drops at the end of each mission should keep you coming back for more. And as one of Ubisoft's vanguard of "living games" it's constantly being updated and improved, even today.
11. Total War: Warhammer.
Total War: Warhammer is one of the best entries in the Total War franchise, which in turn means it's one of the best grand strategy games of all time, especially if you have any affection for the source tabletop miniatures game. And like the tabletop game, it gets infinitely better when you play with other people.
While we were a bit disappointed at the lack of a local option, being able to jump into a full grand campaign with a friend online was one of the best multiplayer experiences of 2016. And now, with mods that let you play as the same army as your partner, or alter the game in any number of insane, fantastic ways, Total War: Warhammer offers a massive slate of reasons to keep coming back.
10. Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes.
Unless you've invested in a VR headset, you probably haven't even heard of this one. However, it's a uniquely brilliant take on co-op play, and demands your attention. One person wears the VR headset, while a number of other people sit - in the real world - and look at a booklet of bomb-defusal documents.
The person inside the VR headset sees a briefcase with a bomb in it, and various devices to disarm, which he/she describes to the people in the real world. The idea is to use the bomb disposal docs to defuse the device by. actually talking to each other and cooperating. It's all set to a time limit to add tension, and bombs get increasingly tricky to dismantle as you play. It's brilliant fun, and a perfect party game.
Play it on: PC, PS4, PS VR, Oculus Rift, HTC Vive.
09. Rocket League.
This is essentially football with cars instead of humans. Oh, and there are other sports too, like basketball, and it's almost as much about pulling cool stunts as scoring goals. However, as a game to play with buddies, Rocket League is unique and easy to just pick up and play.
You'll curse friends as they let in a soft goal, you'll want to scream and hug them when they score a screamer just before time expires, and you'll laugh at their sad attempts to get airborne instead of actually playing the game. All good fun, though.
Play it on: Xbox One, PC, PS4, Nintendo Switch.
08. Diablo 3.
This dungeon crawler is designed to be played with friends, not to mention replayed multiple times, so there's really no limit to the amount of swag you can hoover up with your pals. The beauty of Diablo 3's co-op is that - despite the simplistic combat - you can tinker extensively with load-outs to make each fight more interesting. Certain abilities and items work perfectly with others, and it's up to you to tinker with them to create winning combos.
And given Blizzard's pedigree for supporting its games years or decades after launch, with content drops like the Necromancer being the latest example of that committment, Diablo 3 promises a long tail and ever more numerous reasons (and methods) to keep slaughtering demons.
07. Left 4 Dead 2.
A majority of shooters add co-op in as an afterthought. Valve's Left 4 Dead 2 is built exclusively for four players to fight side-by-side, trying to survive the zombie apocalypse. Every stage is near timeless, and populated with foes designed specifically to force players to play together to the best of their ability.
While the first game was strong, including brilliantly designed elements specifically made to enhance the co-op experience, Left 4 Dead 2 really perfects the formula, shining the survival-based gameplay into a nugget of solid gold. It's an older game, and the age is starting to show, but it's still a best-in-class co-op shooter experience.
Play it on: PC, Xbox One (backwards compatibility)
06. Rock Band 4.
The mother of all party games, Rock Band 4 harnesses the almighty power of rock to unite four would-be musicians in glorious harmony (or hilarious chaos). Whether you're ridiculously drunk or stone-cold sober, crooning Queen lyrics and attacking the drums on Expert-level Blink 182 songs is always better with friends - and regardless of their skill level, anyone can hop in and rock out.
Rock Band 4 excels at bringing people together: cheering on your guitarist after a flawless solo just comes naturally, and witnessing your otherwise-quiet friend belt out high-pitched Boston choruses will have you giddily laughing in awe. Expensive initial set-up, but worth it if you party pretty regularly (or live in a dorm room).
05. Overcooked.
Overcooked sounds simple - prepare a bunch of meals as chefs within a certain time limit. Easy. Well, not so much. While there are up to four of you playing, it starts to get tricky to keep track of the game's various commands and stipulations, as well as avoiding various hazards and pitfalls in the kitchen itself.
This can lead to some frantic play, and only the most cohesive of teams will get those dishes out on time. Warning: may cause bickering among even the closest friends.
Play it on: Xbox One, PS4, PC, Nintendo Switch.
04. Gears of War 4.
Gears of War 4's campaign demands to be played with a friend. While the tone of this game is darker than the original trilogy, there are still epic set-pieces and golden opportunities for cooperative butchery. In fact, the campaign is very much designed for co-op play, with many more branching paths and alternative vantage points than previous games.
On top of that Gears 4 lets you and a bunch of buddies carve up Locust in the series' now infamous horde mode, which sees you facing down waves of enemies together.
03. Borderlands: The Handsome Collection.
Few feelings in gaming are sweeter than shooting massive guns and collecting loot with your buddies. That's exactly what Borderlands 2 brings with its drop in, drop out co-op. For the more casual gaming session, you can just rock up and shoot through some grunts, sharing out their kit for later trade-ins. Hey, maybe you level up a little: whatever.
However, you can also kick it up a notch and tackle some of the game's mega-bosses by getting properly coordinated with both kit and tactics. Those who do often reap the rewards of mega-rare loot drops and - more importantly - you get to reminisce with real friends about that time you took down Crawmerax The Invincible with only a sliver of health remaining. Good times.
Play it on: PC, Xbox One, PS4, PS3, Xbox 360, PS Vita.
02. Destiny 2.
Bungie's sci-fi epic is built on the ability to join up with other players as much as possible. Part FPS, part MMO, Destiny 2's outstanding shooting mechanics and tempting loot grinds will keep you and your friends in for the long run, or at least until Destiny 3 inevitably comes out and everyone jumps ship. Not only are there a ton of Adventures, Strikes, Nightfalls, and six-person raids to participate in, but you'll also find yourself working with random players you encounter in the world.
Public Events literally fall out of the sky, tasking you and anyone nearby to fight off hordes of enemies for that extra piece of loot. If you've somehow never jumped on the Destiny train, you still have time to find and friend and become a Guardian pf the galaxy today.
01. Portal 2.
Portal 2 is one of the most unique co-op experiences out there. You and your friend play as two goofy robots, Atlas and P-Body, making their way through an assortment of Aperture Sciences test chambers. With two sets of portal guns come more complex puzzles, which require precise timing and cooperation to overcome.
This co-op style forces the players to collaborate in previously unimaginable ways, working to solve separate parts of a puzzle before coming together at the end to finish the section. It's endlessly rewarding, especially when you start tooling about with portals to drop your buddy into a pit of fire, or trap them in an infinite loop.
Play it on: PC, Xbox One (backwards compatibility), PS3, Xbox 360.

Top 20 Best Couch Co-Op Games for Xbox One & PS4.
Is couch co-op becoming a thing of the past? With big titles like Halo 5 and The Division opting not to include a split-screen mode, it’s making us wonder if this will become a trend (we sincerely hope not). Local co-op is essential for families, couples, and friends hanging out together, and it’s completely unrealistic for one household to buy multiples of the same system (not to mention multiples of every game). To counteract this nonsense, we have compiled a list of our favorite local multiplayer games, many of which my husband and I enjoy playing together, as well as with our seven-year-old son.
Here are the top 20 best couch co-op games for Xbox One and PS4 (and hopefully soon we’ll be able to add some new co-op games to our most anticipated upcoming games of 2018 list):
1. Broforce.
Developer: Free Lives Games.
Platform: Playstation 4, PC, Linux, Mac.
Release Date: October 15th, 2015.
Broforce is a side-scrolling run ‘n’ gun game that has taken the Steam community by storm since its release on October 15th of last year. Broforce is an an “under-funded, over-powered paramilitary organization” whose goal is to eliminate a terrorist threat (and destroy everything in the process). With new bros and missions added monthly, different game modes, level editor and sharing, and multiplayer for up to four players, this is the perfect game for that group of friends that just wants to blow stuff up. It may be a little mindless and hyper-masculine, but also undeniably fun.
2. HellDivers.
Developer: Arrowhead Game Studios.
Publisher: Sony Computer Entertainment.
Platform: Playstation 4, Playstation Vita, Playstation 3, PC.
Release Date: March 3rd, 2015.
Helldivers is a hardcore top-down shooter (from the creators of Magicka ) in which up to four players participate in co-op missions to protect futuristic Super Earth from an alien threat. In this dystopian universe, Super Earth is ruled by a ‘managed democracy’, and is surrounded by three hostile alien races; the Helldivers are an elite unit responsible protecting mankind. Players must stragetically make their way through enemy territory, complete objectives, and avoid friendly fire (which is always on) in order to prevail.
Buy Helldivers Super Earth Edition here.
3. BattleBlock Theater.
Developer: The Behemoth, Big Timber Studio.
Publisher: The Behemoth, Microsoft Studios.
Platforms: Xbox One, Xbox 360, PC, Linux.
Release Date: April 3rd, 2013.
We’ve included the comedic BattleBlock Theater even though it was originally released for Xbox 360, as it was towards the end of 360’s lifespan and later made available for Xbox One (and also because it’s just really fun). After your ship, the S.S. Friendship , becomes wrecked on an island, you stumble upon a dilapidated theater, where it is revealed that your entire crew is being held prisoner by cats. The cats, under the direction of Hatty Hattington, force players into deadly theater performances in which they fight for their survival. Story mode can be played co-op with a second player, or you can play Arena mode with 2 or 4 players (in teams of two), with several match types to choose from.
4. Divinity: Original Sin Enhanced Edition.
Publisher: Larian Studios, Focus Home Interactive.
Platforms: PC, OS X, Linux, SteamOS, Playstation 4, Xbox One.
Release Date: June 30th 2014.
The critically acclaimed turn-based RPG Divinity: Original Sin Enhanced Edition is the sequel to the 2002 redundantly-titled PC game Divine Divinity , and hailed by many as the best classic-style RPG in recent years. While you can play solo, where you control both Source Hunters, the game really comes into its own when played co-op with another player. The highly interactive world will provide hours upon hours of gameplay, with a compelling story, numerous side quests, and tactical, challenging combat. If you haven’t already played it, we highly recommend you do so, as Divinity: Original Sin 2 is due out in December of this year.
Buy Divinity: Original Sin Enhanced Edition here.
5. Knight Squad.
Developer: Chainsawsome Games.
Publisher: Chainsawsome Games.
Release Date: November 16th, 2015.
Knight Squad is an “8 players top-down Bomberman meets Gauntlet game“, and a definite favorite in our household. This multiplayer arena game for up to 8 players has a variety of game modes, weapons ranging from swords to laser guns, and bots with adjustable difficulty to fill in for any players you’re lacking (so don’t worry if you don’t have 8 controllers). There are a total of nine game types included, with more available as DLC, and the various objectives, single-screen arena, and fact that each knight can be taken out in one hit ensure pure chaos. While you can play online, we recommend inviting your friends (as long as you’re not too fond of them) to bring their controllers for this epic party game.
Developer: Other Ocean Interactive.
Publisher: Other Ocean Interactive.
Platform: Xbox One, PC coming soon.
Release Date: February 1st, 2015.
IDARB (which stands for “It Draws a Red Box”) is a “crowd created” arena eSport game for up to eight players. The name originates from a tweet by developer Mike Mika, in which he states that he has begun a new project and, “it draws a red box.” He then took suggestions from his Twitter followers – hence the “crowd created” – who are responsible for making the game what it is. The premise is fairly simple: two teams run and jump around an arena, each trying to get their hands on a ball and score on the other team’s goal. What makes this game so unique is the social media element; anyone can tweet a Hashbomb using your game session number, which has one of any number of predetermined effects on the gameplay. Grab your friends, and witness chaos ensue.
7. Borderlands: The Handsome Collection.
Developer: Gearbox Software, Armature Studio, Iron Galaxy Studios.
Platform: Playstation 4, Xbox One.
Release Date: March 24th, 2015.
Borderlands: The Handsome Collection is a compilation of first-person shooters Borderlands 2 and Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel , with the added ability to play four-player split-screen for the first time in the franchise’s history. The sheer amount of content is impressive in itself; it includes both remastered games, along with the enhanced multiplayer (the ability to play with four players instead of two, as was the previous limit), all available DLC, and the ability to transfer save games from previous-gen copies. Reviewers have cited technical issues with The Pre-Sequel , but even so, Borderlands 2 more than makes up for what The Pre-Sequel lacks in performance.

8. LEGO Dimensions.
Publisher: Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment.
Platform: Playstation 4, Xbox One, Wii U, Playstation 3, Xbox 360.
Release Date: September 27th, 2015.
We could have included any number of Lego games on this list, but Lego Dimensions really stands out from the rest and is a great choice for parents looking for a game to play with their kids. For one, it includes iconic characters from multiple major entertainment franchises that adults and children alike will recognize. Secondly, they manage to take the toys-to-life model created by Skylanders and Disney Infinity and breathe new life into it by requiring you to spend a significant amount of time building with actual LEGO pieces. So, even if you’re played out with the aforementioned games, consider giving this one a try; its typical humorous LEGO take on popular franchises and unique toy-to-life experience makes it a great way for parents and children to spend time together.

9. Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime.
Platform: Playstation 4, Xbox One, PC, Linux, Mac.
Release Date: September 9th, 2015.
Another game that can be played by yourself but (as the title suggests) is much better with two players, is the action spaces shooter Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime . Don’t let the cutesy, colorful graphics and sappy title deceive you; this game is both challenging and seriously fun. You and your partner pilot a spaceship with multiple stations inside, and you must move around to control the various stations and defend your ship against aliens. The game consists of four campaigns, each with four levels and a boss fight, during which you find gems to upgrade your stations. This is a great game for couples (but only if you’re certain that your relationship has a strong foundation).
10. Rocket League.
Platform: Playstation 4, Xbox One, PC, Linux, Mac.
Release Date: July 7th 2015.
One of the more frequently-played games in our house and a favorite of both my husband and son is the driving-meets-soccer game Rocket League , winner of The Game Award for Best Independent Game. It’s exactly what it sounds like; players control rocket-powered cars and try to hit a giant ball into the other team’s goal (stretching the laws of physics in the process). You can earn experience points to unlock other vehicles (including the Batmobile) and cosmetic uprades. It’s a simple concept, but extremely well-executed, and we are of the mind that the simplest can often translate to the most fun.
Buy Rocket League here.
11. Yoshi’s Woolly World.
Release Date: June 25th,2015.
Yoshi’s Woolly World is a stunning side-scrolling platformer in which the island, and all the Yoshis therein, are knitted from yarn. As opposed to producing eggs when swallowing enemies as Yoshi does in other games, in Woolly World , he produces balls of yarn, which are used to accomplish various tasks. The game is also compatible with the adorable knitted Yarn Yoshi Amiibo, which comes in green and pink. In co-op, both players control Yoshis and share the screen in typical Nintendo fashion. And, if you run out of yarn balls, you can simply turn your partner into one.

12. Minecraft.
Developer: Mojang, 4J Studios, Microsoft Studios.
Publisher: Mojang, Microsoft Studios, Sony Computer Entertainment.
Platforms: PC, OS X, Linux, Android, iOS, Windows Phone, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Playstation 3, Playstation 4, Playstation Vita, Raspberry Pi, Universal Windows Platform, Wii U.
Release Date: November 18th, 2011.
If you haven’t heard of Minecraft by now, you need to come out from the rock you’re living under; it may not need mentioning, but this list wouldn’t be complete without it. If you’ve watched your children obsess over it and, like us, wondered what all the hype was about, you definitely need to give this open-world sandbox game a try. Play with a friend and collaborate to collect resources and build sprawling structures, or build forts and try to kill each other; the choice is yours. There is no real story or endgame; you are dropped into a randomly-generated world, where your goal is to gather, craft, and build (and occasionally discover hidden structures). The possibilities, however, are endless. There may also be enemies to harass you, depending on the mode you choose. So simple, yet so addictive.
Buy Minecraft here.
13. Kalimba.
Platform: Xbox One, PC.
Release Date: December 17, 2014.
Kalimba is a fantastic co-op puzzle game that came from the unfortunately now-closed Press Play. Players team up to create their own totem poles, and will have to work together to traverse through each level, solving creative puzzles along the way. There are a lot of fun gameplay mechanics within, and some of the puzzles will definitely have you and your friend trying different things and scratching your heads when it doesn’t work. There’s a strong emphasis on getting the timing right, which is tough to do when you have to rely on someone else to hit their timing right as well. This is what makes Kalimba fun, and its colorful world is great to look at. I’ll also note that it’s an incredibly unique game unlike anything we’ve seen previously, and although it’s relatively short, it’s an incredibly fun co-op game for couples.
14. Diablo III: Reaper of Souls.
Developer: Blizzard Entertainment.
Publisher: Blizzard Entertainment.
Platform: Playstation 4, Xbox One, Playstation 3, Xbox 360, PC, Mac.
Release Date: March 24th, 2014.
Diablo III: Reaper of Souls was the first expansion pack released for the popular dungeon-crawling action RPG Diablo III as part of Diablo III: The Ultimate Evil Edition . It not only expanded the original game on PS 3/Xbox 360, but also brought it to current gen consoles. It adds many features, such as a new class (the Crusader), a fifth Act, an Adventure Mode (where players can explore the entire world), the Mystic artisan, a higher level cap, and more. It successfully added in all the elements that Diablo III , although a good game, was sorely lacking. Although it’s fun enough on your own, the ability of another player to jump into your game at any time makes it an ideal choice for couch co op.

15. Rayman Legends.
Platform: Playstation 4, Xbox One, PC, Wii U, PS3, X360, Vita.
Release Date: February 2014.
Rayman Legends was great when it first came out in 2013, but when it made its way to the PS4 and Xbox One in 2014, it was even better. It’s a visually stunning game with great level design, and it brought Rayman back to the forefront of the minds of gamers. The (at the time) next-gen game used uncompressed textures, and the new consoles allowed for lesser loading times. Although the solo experience is great, too, the Rayman Legends couch co-op was what made us truly fall in love with the game. Believe it or not, it was the Wii U version that we loved most, because of the fantastic co-operative play it allowed. It’s admittedly a chaotic experience, but a little bit of chaos is fun when you’re sitting next to someone playing, too. Whether you’re an Xbox One gamer, PS4 lover or Wii U owner, it’s an essential local co-op game.

16. Castle Crashers Remastered.
Developer: The Behemoth.
Publisher: Sony, Microsoft Studios.
Platform: Xbox One, Xbox 360, PS3, PC, Mac.
Release Date: September 9, 2015.
Behemoth, who also developed Battleblock Theater , also created a little game called Castle Crashers , which originally hit the market in August 2008 (remember Xbox Live Arcade…swoon). But back in late 2015, it finally made its way to Xbox One in the form of Castle Crashers Remastered , which brought the fantastic 2.5D hack and slash game to our latest generation of consoles. The new version doesn’t bring much new along with it, aside from sharper visuals and smoother gameplay (and a new mini-game called Back Off Barbarian), but at its core, Castle Crashers is a necessary co-op game that reminds us of tag-team beat ’em up sidescrollers that ate our quarters in the arcades.
17. LittleBigPlanet 3.
Developer: Sumo Digital.
Platform: Playstation 4, PS3.
Release Date: November 18, 2014.
Where else can you play as Spider-Man and Jake from Adventure Time in the same game? Nowhere! That’s just one of the reasons we love LittleBigPlanet 3 , despite its mediocre reviews from critics. In fact, we think LGP 3 got a bad rap for not being “new” enough, but there’s still a ton of fun to be had with co-operative play. It has local and online co-op of up to four players, with players able to play and create levels together. It’s a whimsical world, and collaborating with your friends for a night as you both team-up to build your own levels is fantastic fun.

18. Plants Vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2.
Developer: PopCap Games.
Platform: PS4, Xbox One, PC.
Release Date: February 23, 2016.
Part tower defense, part third-person shooter, part ridiculous mobile game graphics — it’s hard not to be charmed by Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2 , the follow-up to PopCap’s beloved PvZ: Garden Warfare . This time around, there are 6 new plant and zombie classes, Graveyard Ops, and a new Herbal Assault mode. Teaming up with a friend or loved one to take down some zombies is always on the top of our to-do lists, and doing so in this game just feels so good. It’s pure, unadulterated fun, that is far from the serious tone of today’s typical shooters. It also helps that the gameplay actually requires skill, so it’s not just a dumbed-down version of a third person shooter. This allows for both grown-ups and children to enjoy, making it the perfect choice for family game night.

19. Towerfall Ascension.
Developer: Matt Thorson.
Platform: Playstation 4, PC, PS Vita.
Release Date: March 11, 2014.
Towerfall Ascension has an IDARB -y vibe to it, with more color and less sports. Players can create a battle of four, and each battle is frenetic. You start out with a limited number of arrows, so you have to refill your quiver by picking them back up after you shoot. Rounds can become intense pretty quickly, and only the accurate and skilled players will become victorious. There’s plenty of customization, and the fact that it’s so simplistic creates for more than a few laughs while playing. Fair warning, though: it might make you punch the person sitting next to you on the couch.

20. Child of Light.
Developer: Ubisoft Montreal.
Platform: Playstation 4, Xbox One, Playstation 3, Playstation Vita, Wii U, Xbox 360, PC.
Release Date: April 29th, 2014.
Admittedly, I first played 2D side-scroller Child of Light by myself, and it was a spectacular enough game to play solo. The fantastically whimsical design, stunning art, fairy tale-like feel, and outstanding combat system combine to make this game a memorable one. The main character, Aurora, takes ill following her father’s marriage to a wicked stepmother; she is transported in sleep to the mystical land of Lemuria, where she meets a series of endearing characters that join her on her quest. At any point during the game, a second player can join and take control of Aurora’s companion Igniculus, who is a ball of light later discovered to be an Elemental and is able to fly freely around the screen.

21. Enter the Gungeon.
Publisher: Devolver Digital.
It would be remiss of me not to update this list to include the recently-released Enter the Gungeon . This bullet hell game with roguelike elements is maddeningly difficult, chaotic, and incredibly fun. Players must shoot at and dodge fire from a variety of unique enemies while making their way through randomly-generated dungeon floors and occasionally stumbling upon assorted chests, secret rooms, and traps. Each floor also randomly spawns one of several potential bosses, each of which will truly test your skill. There are countless possible weapons and devices you may come across, most of which feature a pop culture or gaming reference certain to elicit a chuckle; some weapons are taken directly from another franchise, whereas some (like the t-shirt shooter), are just hilarious. There are several unique playable characters to choose from, each of which has its own helpful ability. If you’re looking to have a good laugh while truly testing your gaming prowess, try Enter the Gungeon ; be warned, though – lives are limited, and each loss sends you back to the beginning and will have you throwing up your hands in frustration.
None of those are as good as Earth Defense Force series.
Have you even Played Towerfall with multiple peeps?
Divinity: Original Sin Enhanced Edition is fantastic.
Why the fuck doesn’t my back button work?
huh? Back button works fine on my end.
Fantastic article, Elizabeth! I have been looking for some titles to play with my friend. Super excited to check some of these out. Thanks!
Thank you so much! I try to update this periodically so keep checking back :D.
Will do! It’s really difficult to keep up with games now, especially sifting through good digital-only mainstream releases, and especially indie ones. Then it becomes even more difficult to try and get a straight answer as to which are local and which are online multiplayer.
I love my PS4 so much and get a great deal of game time out of it, but I miss being able to sit and relax with a friend and play something. Especially coop games with a story. I love these brawlers and such, but there’s something satisfying about going through an adventure with a distinct end. I popped in Timesplitters Future Perfect recently for exactly that reason.
Again, great stuff. I look forward to the updates.
Where is terraria.
Dear Emerald Lord,
Thanks for commenting. We have to update with quite a few games that released this year.
I would add the Jackbox games. They are a hit with everyone – even non-gamers.
Good idea. We definitely have to update this list, but I can tell you that one of our writers (Joe Portes) is currently obsessed with the Jackbox games. He streams them on Twitch all the time!
Really good list!
oh cool, thanks, Anthony! We are definitely going to update it soon, too – so many great co op games have released since we originally posted this.

15 Xbox One Co-Op Games You NEED To Be Playing.
The Xbox One has achieved and provided many new fun games this generation. With better online features and party options, playing with friends has never been easier on Xbox Live. Microsoft’s agenda has always been to stay connected with friends through Xbox Live. This can be seen in their approach to provide many cooperative experiences through popular game franchises like Gears of War and Halo . Many adopters of the original Xbox will know that playing Halo with a full team was extreme fun; as you would try your best to beat that one friend who would always screen cheat. The idea of having a sci-fi console shooter centered around a multiplayer experience truly propelled the concept of the online home console. While consoles such as like the GameCube and PS2 had the potential for online connectivity, only the original Xbox truly invested in creating an online platform to connect gamers to their favorite games.
The Xbox One has streamlined this process by notifying you what your friends are playing and allowing to invite friends to online matches with relative ease. Let’s be honest, Xbox Live is also one of the best online platforms and it pioneered downloadable games, DLC, and achievements. PSN and Nintendo’s online service have always been shaky, unstable, or offline. Xbox Live has further expanded its features such as creating online groups, setting up play dates, and posting screen-shots or clips on a shared community hub. Playing with your friends has never been easier and these are the top 15 cooperative games on Xbox One.
15. Minecraft.
Minecraft is a game like no other, but its boxy shape world lends to a charm of survival and creativity. Minecraft allows your imagination to run wild and also gives players a lot of freedom. Do you want to build an awesome town? It requires huge amount of discovery for materials and recipes to support your endeavors. All while surviving against cute boxy shaped monsters seeking to destroy. This game lends itself to playing with friends and working together to build and explore. Head into the depths of the earth or traverse lava filled caverns in search of rare materials and craft weapons and tools that increase your power. Play Minecraft on Xbox One with your friends and you will not regret your time!
14. Tomb Raider And The Temple of Osiris.
Temple of Osiris is a top down arcade shooter with puzzles suited for co-op. This entry allows up to four players to join in on the action and the game adjusts the puzzles according to the number of players on screen. Everyone will have a role and feel needed as your team fights enemies, solves puzzles, and escapes deadly traps. Temple of Osiris is more fleshed out in terms of combat and puzzle design when compared to it’s predecessor, Guardian of Light . I would also recommend picking up Guardian of Light , but know that it is a two player game. This game also offers more dungeons and content through DLC. This is a cheap and beautiful looking game that people who want to have a fun couch co-op should pick up and enjoy.
13. Call Of Duty: Black Ops 3.
Call of Duty is still a franchise that manages to shake things up for both new fans and veterans. Black Ops 3 is a great addition to your Xbox One collection as it adds many new features and game modes to play with friends. There’s a stellar campaign about a black ops team going rogue; which can be played up to four friends online. Call of Duty zombies are also back, with brand new secrets and incredible power-ups for all to enjoy with their friends. The multiplayer is great and offers loads of gameplay modes that Call of Duty is known for; while adding a fluid combat movement system. Dead Ops Arcade is also back and can be played with friends on the same screen. Pick this game up and hop on with friends and enjoy what Black Ops 3 has to offer, which is plenty!
12. Halo: The Master Chief Collection.
Halo: The Master Chief Collection is a great addition to the Xbox One catalog. You have five different campaigns that you can play cooperatively in either splitscreen or online. This game features an HD remake of Halo 2 with Xbox One graphics and is multiplayer maps remade for Xbox One. Every Halo map ever released is available for multiplayer at 60fps. The Master Chief Collection has a whooping 6000 points of gamerscore available if you unlock all 600 achievements in the game, while the campaigns have added playlists to add more variety and new fun ways to play in co-op. There’s a playlist that gathers every level in the Halo series that has tanks and another one that features all the best sniping levels. Many fun and creative playlists exist for the campaign and multiplayer modes that will provide great cooperative fun.
11. Elder Scrolls Online.
Elder Scrolls Online is a perfect cooperative experience to enjoy the with friends in a fantasy setting. Elder Scrolls Online feels more like a traditional MMO in many ways, but does not require a subscription. You will find all the same comforts of previous Elder Scrolls games such alchemy and blacksmithing. Pick a race and class and start your grand adventure with a friend or make friends with anyone you see through chat. Elder Scrolls Online is a fun cooperative version of the single player scrolls games. The world of Elder Scrolls Online is enormous and only gets bigger as more content keeps getting added to the game. I would highly recommend bringing a friend or two to play this game. This game is built with many social features in order to make new friends and team up with other party members; with the option to make a guild or join an existing one.
10. Destiny.
Destiny is the game that melds a fantasy sci-fi shooter with MMO aspects. You are a Guardian destined to fight back the darkness and defend the last city on earth. Destiny is meant to be played together with a fireteam of three (or six for PvP and raids). Many story missions, dungeons, and raids are required to play with others and trust me that you will love every second of it. Destiny has had several content updates and new additions to the game through DLC expansions. The multiplayer also offers a great variety of loot and glory, having its own meta game of what weapons and armor combinations works best in PvP. The Prison of Elders also offers a horde style game mode for a fireteam of three. Destiny is great addition to the Xbox One with plenty to do and memories to make with your fireteam.
9. Star Wars: Battlefront.
Star Wars Battlefront is now available with all the DLC; at a much more reasonable price. Battlefront offers several multiplayer game modes to play with with friends, such as the Walker Assault and Supremacy. Battlefront is not the most hardcore shooter, so it is casual enough for anyone to jump in and immediately enjoy with friends. Skirmish mode allows you and another player to test out maps in a simulated battle between AI opponents. There are offline missions which revolve around various objectives as hero characters, like Luke Skywalker, gaining control of an imperial hanger for as long as possible. Survival mode allows two players to battle across several iconic Star Wars locations and hold out as long as possible against waves of enemies AI. Battlefront is great when played with friends because it does not require experience with multiplayer shooters. The best part about playing Star Wars Battlefront is the fact that it feels, looks, and sounds exactly like Star Wars .
8. Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls.
Xbox One is a great place to play Diablo 3 , as the controller is a perfect tool to slaughter hordes of demons for legendary items. Up to four players can play together on the same screen making this a must have for couch co-op play. The UI is easy to understand and everyone can get their own loot drop or trade with each other. You have the option between several character classes that all play completely differently from each other. After beating the main story, more content is unlocked such as adventure mode and greater rifts. These modes are randomly generated which adds new ways to play and gain loot. Diablo 3 ‘s gameplay is a fun and satisfying as you slaughter several demons with fun abilities and powers. Blizzard always provides more content for Reaper of Souls through new updates and events. This top down dungeon RPG is a great game to play with friends, matchmaking is also available to play with strangers and continue the fun.
7. Borderlands: The Handsome Collection.
This collection has addictive gameplay, up to four player co-op, and a great amount of content that your group of vault hunters will enjoy for hours on end. The Handsome Collection offers Borderlands 2 , Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel , and a huge amount of content from all the DLC released for both games. Borderlands has been a name that is known for making great content that doesn’t feel tacked on. We are talking about a series that makes massive games that have great amount of content for cooperative play. The loot is plentiful in this game, you find all sorts of guns that can do ridiculous amount of damage in unique ways. Each vault hunter has unique gameplay mechanics and skills trees that brings something fun to the party. Borderlands: The Handsome Collection also includes four player splitscreen for those long couch gaming sessions!
6. LEGO Dimensions.
Most of the LEGO games are great to play cooperatively with family and friends of all ages. LEGO Dimensions is the toy to life version in which you buy LEGO sets that can be used in the game. LEGO Dimensions offers a hefty single player story that can be played cooperatively. This game is unique in the fact that it has weird and fun licensed properties in order to mash them together in a LEGO game. Each level in the main campaign combines two franchises in clever ways. How would The Riddler control Middle-Earth? What if GlaDos and HAL meet? This game provides fun mash ups and more. You and another player can go freely explore, complete quests, and unlock new secrets in the world of Scooby-Doo or the Doctor Who world. LEGO Dimensions is a great addition to your Xbox One Co-op library because of the variety it offers and the amount of content that other toys to life games simply don’t offer.
Smite made its debut on Xbox One and offers a third person MOBA that is filled with great content and is always being updated. Smite is a free-to-play game based on God mythology and they explore several types of mythologies from different cultures in order to make their heroes feel unique. Also, Smite on an Xbox One controller feels great! And with daily challenges and other quests, you quickly unlock new characters to add to your arsenal. Smite offers a lot of variety in game modes that other MOBAs lack. Smite has single, two, and three lane battles with many configurations of hero size and rotation; Arena is a 5v5 deathmatch while Joust is a single lane 3v3. This game also offers seasonal events in which players work together to defeat bosses instead of each other. Also, and let’s not forget this, Smite is free! Take advantage of trying this game out with your friends and it may become a daily or weekly game you can all enjoy.
4. Overwatch.
Overwatch is a hero shooter in which you pick a unique hero and defend or attack against another enemy team. This is a great game to play with friends, but it does not offer any kind of single player content. That being said, Overwatch is a must play with your friends as you become addicted to your favorite heroes and every match can be exhilarating down to the last second. There is a playstyle for everyone! You don’t have to be a shooting God in order to succeed and help your team. Overwatch is an approachable type of shooter, because all the heroes are well balanced and offers something for everyone. This game gets free updates for holiday events and they keep adding more heroes in order to keep the game fresh. Overwatch is a perfect stepping point for playing with friends online for quick match or hours on Xbox One.
3. Tom Clancy’s The Division.
New York city gets devastated by a deadly virus on black friday. The only thing keeping the city together is a special government agency made up of sleeper agents, Welcome to The Division . You are an agent of The Division and your job is to get public services up and running, find a cure, while also maintaining order. Several malicious factions are seeking to gain power as New York is plunged into chaos. The Division is a loot based shooter in which finding powerful weapons and combinations of gear will keep you coming back for more. You can join or create a squad in order to play the story, tackle missions, and explore the open world. The Dark Zone is a unique amalgamation of PvP and PvE, a zone that is filled with dangerous AI enemies and other players seeking to get the best gear in the game. This game offers great opportunities for players to play with friends or make new friends through match making.
2. Gears of War 4.
Microsoft purchased the Gears of War franchise in order to make it an Xbox exclusive. Gears of War goes hand in hand with the Xbox brand as a shooter that has an awesome story and fun cooperative game modes. This latest entry is the perfect starting point for any newcomers and veterans of the franchise. Gears of War 4 ‘s campaign can be played cooperatively with another player as you fight against new enemies like The Swarm and the COG ‘s DeeBees. Gears 4 also brings back the chainsaw dueling multiplayer that the series has always been known for. Horde mode is back with a class based system in which players can choose to be a heavy duty gunner, a scout, sniper or engineer. Surviving 50 waves is no small feat, but leveling up and unlocking new abilities for your classes will keep you and your fellow gears coming back for more!
The Master Chief is back in this second installment of the forerunner saga. Halo has always provided a solid campaign and multiplayer experience for you and your squad of Spartans. Play through a vigorous campaign against rebel covenant factions and the prometheans in order to save Cortana. Online multiplayer in Halo 5 has been split between Arena combat or Warzones. Arena pits you and your friends against other fellow Spartans in various game modes(team deathmatch, king of the hill) that can range from 4v4 to 8v8. Warzone adds a new battlefield where 24 players maintain control of 3 bases in order to win, while also fighting each other and covenant/prometheans forces for additional points. Firefight makes a return in Halo 5 as Warzone Firefight, a five round onslaught in which 12 players need to work together to defeat waves of covenant or prometheans. Halo 5 is a great addition to your Xbox One library and will not disappoint when looking for a good time with friends.

16 of the Best Xbox One Co-Op Games.
VGChartz's Tyler Treese: "Most games are more fun to play with friends, but received wisdom would have it that co-op play is becoming a thing of the past; that aside from Nintendo no other major publisher really places much emphasis on cooperative gaming experiences.
Best Looking Indie Games of 2018.
I think this is a neat article. I love coop. The only thing I wish about these game is that they offered Same system coop. I have been playing Saints Row IV and Gat Out of Hell on my One and really love the way they did coop on the Saints Row games.
I love smite so much. Been playing for about 2 years but just started on xbox in march. Such a great community in the game.
Where is NEVERWINTER?
They said "best" co op. While it is a decent game due to random difficulty spikes and features being locked behind a pay wall I don't see it rating much higher than a 7. But that's just my opinion.
in my opinion it's still better in coop than a lot of games in the list.

Best Co-Op Games on OG Xbox.
Here are our picks for the ten best co-op games on the first Xbox. The desctiptions tell whether they are online or offline or both. Please note: Xbox Live service was turned off for original Xbox games several years ago, so the online portions of these games no longer work. Offline play works just fine, of course.
Playing though Halo 1 and 2 with a friend is the absolute best way to experience the game. It gives you more options and more strategy and it is generally just a heck of a lot of fun. “Accidentally” running over your friend with a Warthog or killing each other until the bodies are stacked ten high are added bonuses. Co-op is offline.

Shaolin Monks takes all of the cool stuff in Mortal Kombat – the blood and fatalities and cool characters and strips away the bad stuff (like the cruddy fighting engine). What you are left with is a solid beat-em-up that gets even better when you can work together with a friend. New moves open up when two people play and it is impossible to beat it 100% without playing some co-op. Co-op is offline.
Co-op in Chaos Theory takes place in unique levels that were designed with two players in mind so it is a completely new experience from the single player game. You have a bunch of new moves to use and playing with two people opens up all sorts of strategy that the single player game lacks. Co-op is available in splitscreen as well as on Xbox Live and system link.

Doom 3 is a scary game, but you can be a bit more confident when you know your friend has your back. It makes the game quite a bit easier when you have two people blasting demons, but it is considerably more fun. Co-op is available over Xbox Live and system link only.
20 Best Couch Co-Op Games To Play With Friends.
Gaming with friends is always tremendous fun and offers a change of pace from going solo. While the majority of multiplayer gaming is competitive, playing in a cooperative fashion, working toward the same goal is rewarding and immensely enjoyable. The idea of split-screen cooperative gaming is slowly dying out as the couch co-op genre has implemented online modes to replace this feature. However, nothing beats sitting down in the same room as your friends to tackle a game together. The following are the 20 best cooperative games to play in split-screen on the same television.
20. Rock Band (Series)
Although the plastic instruments genre has largely died out, franchises such as Rock Band still make for great party games, at least if you managed to hang onto all of those bulky peripherals. Still, there’s no reason to dig out Rock Band unless you have some friends play with, as the series becomes infinitely better when enjoyed with a group. Considering most people have likely played a Rock Band at this point, there’s really no point in discussing what makes it so good, but rather why . At its heart, Rock Band is a celebration of music and its ability to bring people together, which certainly helps explain why it’s so much better in a group setting. Harmonix did a pretty good job of carrying over songs to each subsequent release thanks to its impressive online store, so you really can’t go wrong with any entry in the franchise. That being said, we’d avoid the first game since it has the fewest features and song selection.
Also, we’d be remiss if we didn’t give a shout out to The Beatles Rock Band, which remains a loving tribute to the legendary band and is notable for increasing the player count thanks to the inclusion of harmony vocal tracks.
19. TowerFall Ascension.
An arena style indie game focused on platforming and archery, TowerFall: Ascension is known primarily for its battle royale multiplayer mode, but it also has a surprisingly good co-op mode as well. Although it only allows for a maximum of two players, TowerFall’s Quest mode is a true test of cooperative perseverance, as players must battle it out with an array of enemies in increasingly difficult levels. Deceptively simple in terms of presentation, TowerFall’s gameplay is quite nuanced and takes a fair amount of time to truly master. While it’s not as deep as some other co-op games, TowerFall Ascension is worth seeking out for fans of retro gaming looking for a cheap title to play with a friend.
18. Rocket League.
Sports games are generally thought of as more competitive multiplayer experiences, but most of them make for great cooperative games as well. One of the best sports games in recent years is Rocket League , a zany take on soccer featuring highly maneuverable rocket cars. While Rocket League has become a popular eSports title in its own right, it also makes for a great couch co-op experience, as you and up to three friends can take on A.I. controlled teams offline or venture online to take on other human players. With modern split-screen games few and far between, Rocket League stands out all the more as a beacon of local multiplayer greatness and is a must-buy title for anyone looking to get a group over for some epic couch gaming.
17. Broforce.
Broforce hearkens back to the shoot-em-up action of the Contra games, which if you’ll recall, were some of the best co-op experiences available back in the NES era. While it’s refreshing to see a game deliver on being a fantastic Contra spiritual successor, Broforce gets extra points for going full 80s with pretty much everything. Inspired by the many ripped action movie stars of the era, Broforce lets you play as a bunch of action hero knock offs, including Mr. Anderbro, Rambro, Ellen Ripbro, Macbrover, and Bro Hard. Each bro comes equipped with their own unique weapon and play style, and the game supports up to four players locally or online. Sure, it’s not the most nuanced co-op game ever created, but sometimes you just need to bro out with your buds and save the world from terrorists in a delightful 2D sidescrolling setting.
16. Resogun.
Resogun is one of the best twin-stick shooters available on the PS4 and is an absolute riot to play cooperatively. Although this PS4 launch game only allowed players to play together online in the beginning, it was eventually patched to allow for local co-op, which is arguably the best way to experience it. Resogun’s side-scrolling design and hectic gameplay contribute to a game that ramps up in difficultly very quickly, but it’s this challenge that makes it all the more rewarding to best this ship-based shooter as a team. That being said, since players share resources, Resogun can also be immensely frustrating if your communication skills are lacking, but if you can persevere, it’s an experience worth seeing through to its completion.
15. Helldivers.
A top-down twin stick shooter that supports up to four friends locally, Helldivers is notable for how challenging it is. Unlike most shooters of its ilk where you recklessly spray and pray to take down hordes of enemies, Helldivers rewards strategy and the careful conservation of resources. Missions are varied in structure and require tactical preparation, as you are able to tweak your loadout before dropping into a mission. Oh and speaking of drops, you have to watch where you call in ordinance, as air supply drops can crush and kill your allies if they land in the wrong spot, and is the rare co-op game where friendly fire is a legitimate concern. You’ll come for the Starship Troopers-inspired tone of Helldivers’ story and presentation, but stay for its addictive, challenging gameplay.
14. Resident Evil 5.
Resident Evil 5 was viewed by many to be a disappointing follow-up to the incredible Resident Evil 4 and although RE5 is definitely a step back in its single player offering, the game improves significantly when played through with a buddy. The reason for this is that RE5 was essentially designed to be played in co-op, as the A.I. takes over secondary protagonist Sheva when played alone. The game’s limited inventory system demands that you use Sheva as a pack mule in single player but in co-op, item management becomes an even more integral component of the game, as you must learn to share weapons and resources effectively to survive. Of course, it’s also much more entertaining to laugh at RE5’s cheesy storyline with a buddy, but be forewarned that dreaded quick time events rear their ugly head quite often, so you’ll want to make sure your co-op partner has quick reaction times or else you may be at each other’s throats before long.
13. Any Lego Game.
TT Games’ many Lego titles are the equivalent of video game comfort food, as you know that no matter what happens, each new game is going to play almost identically to the last one. Still, not every game needs to strive for innovation and while many franchises try to rewrite the book with each subsequent release, the Lego games have remained a reliable source for local cooperative play. From the original Lego Star Wars all the way up to the toys-to-life experiment Lego Dimensions , TT Games has made sure that drop in, drop out co-op is a key component of the game.
While the Lego games can be enjoyed by just about everyone, one of their best features that doesn’t seem to get highlighted enough is that they are the perfect games for parents to play with their kids, as their mix of family-friendly content and easy-to-learn gameplay are a welcome respite from the many cooperative games out there that are not suitable for children (unless you own a Nintendo console, where they are in abundance). As for which Lego game to play, it really just comes down to which franchise you enjoy the most, as TT Games always delivers on fan service whether they’re tackling Star Wars, Marvel, DC, or the many other popular brands that have been Legoized.
12. Overcooked.
Overcooked is arguably one of the best local co-op experiences available on current gen hardware and is the perfect sort of game for busting out at parties. Up to four players take control of chefs in a restaurant kitchen and are tasked with putting out customer orders as quickly as possible. It’s a deceptively simple gameplay concept, but in practice, it can turn into absolute pandemonium, especially when you add more players to the mix. Much like in a real kitchen, players must balance food prep, cooking, washing dishes, and plating and delivering the meals.
While early levels are relatively straightforward, Overcooked constantly throws curve balls at you and your friends, to the point where you will probably lose your cool with someone for failing to chop an onion in a timely fashion. Communication is so key to the experience, in fact, that Overcooked can only be played in local multiplayer, not online (although we’re not sure whether or not that was just an oversight on developer Ghost Town Games’ part). At less than $20, Overcooked is a steal and will deliver hours of local multiplayer mayhem and fun (but mostly mayhem).
11. Portal 2.
Almost six years after its original release, there are still very few co-op experiences that rival the brain-busting puzzle action of Portal 2 . While Portal 2’s cooperative mode doesn’t reach the delightful narrative heights of its single player campaign, it serves as a perfect complimentary piece that offers new twists on the game’s puzzle designs. By adding one other player to the mix, Valve is able to craft puzzles that simply aren’t possible in the single player mode, as players must work in tandem to solve each room’s environmental brainteasers.
Portal 2’s co-op is arguably best enjoyed in split-screen too, as it’s a game that requires constant communication and teamwork, especially in later stages when timing becomes especially important to getting past challenges. Although Portal 2 can prove frustrating at times, especially if you and your partner aren’t in sync, much of this is offset by the characters; in particular, the two lovable robots who are just dripping with personality. Very few games include a high five button and for this and many other reasons, Portal 2 i s a special game.
10. Diablo III: Ultimate Evil Edition (PS4, Xbox One)
Diablo III transitioned from PC to consoles with a fair amount of skepticism. PC games ported over to consoles often suffer from reduced features and downgraded control schemes. Meanwhile, Diablo III itself was initially viewed as a relative disappointment after following in the footsteps of the wildly successful Diablo II , widely considered to be one of the best games of all-time, as well as one of the most influential. The Ultimate Evil Edition has therefore gone underappreciated among the gaming community who did not give it a chance. The title offers an improvement on the PC version thanks to ingenious usage of the right thumbstick, which now acts as a dodge and roll mechanic. The main attraction though is the inclusion of couch co-op play. Diablo II and Diablo III both offer outstanding LAN co-operative play, but the Diablo III console edition showcases that there is still no topping the excitement of couch co-op gameplay. Sitting next to a friend while collecting loot offers the finest Diablo experience around.
9. Divinity: Original Sin – Enhanced Edition.
An underrated gem, Divinity: Original Sin arrived on consoles in October 2015 and is quietly one of the most rewarding RPGs on the market. With added voice acting and extra content, the console edition is indeed the definitive edition. What separates the Enhanced Edition port from the PC original the most though is (as you can probably guess) the inclusion of split-screen cooperative play. There are sadly few RPGs that offer split-screen co-op, giving Divinity: Original Sin a perk to begin with, even before seeing how fluidly the system functions. Each character is allowed to make separate dialogue choices, shaping each character differently as the game progresses. The mechanic really allows each character to shine with a different personality. The game has both characters on screen together when they are next to each other and when one character ventures too far off screen, the game transitions seamlessly into split-screen. The co-op is nailed so well that surely more RPGs will follow this formula in the future.
8. Rayman Legends.
Expanding on the hectic fun of Nintendo’s New Super Mario Bros . series, Rayman Legends manages to top Nintendo’s offering and stands as the finest 2D platforming cooperative game ever made. The pacing in the game is as good as it gets, with moments of extreme frustration immediately followed by humorous cutscenes or perfectly-placed musical cues. The music stages themselves are some of the best levels in the game, with Rayman and company racing through a fast-paced stage to the tune of a soundtrack that syncs with the player’s actions. Rayman Legends even includes approximately 80 percent of the stages from its predecessor Rayman Origins , making this lengthy game absolutely gigantic. This is co-op game that can become competitive but at the end of the day, the goal is to get to the end of a stage alive. Therefore, the balance between competition and cooperation is a beautiful sight to behold.
7. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time.
A side-scrolling “beat-em-up,” TMNT IV: Turtles in Time is a perfect representation of arcade fun. It can be completed in a day, making it an accessible title compared to the other rather lengthy cooperative titles on this list. However, don’t let the length fool you because Turtles in Time is still difficult on a first run and has a ton of replay value, making it one of the best value purchases in gaming. In fact, after completing it, you will be hard-pressed not to jump right back in and try it again with a different Ninja Turtle taking the lead. With trademark TMNT humor, a high difficulty curve, and time traveling, not only is this one of the best co-op games to play with a friend, it’s also the best Ninja Turtles title to ever be released. Turtles in Time will have players fighting over pizzas but it is all part of the fun; this game is meant to be played together and offers far more strategy in two player mode, as players communicate while enemies come from every direction. You can opt for the SNES original or the “Reshelled” version released on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in 2009.
6. The Gears of War Franchise.
While most shooters have moved away from split-screen gaming, with the most recent Halo not including it at all, Gears of War has stayed true to its roots, with every entry in the franchise up to the recent Gears of War 4 on Xbox One including split-screen across each of its game modes. That last bit is really the key to GoW’s success as a cooperative experience, as it’s not just the campaign that includes this feature. For instance, Gears of War 4 can be played in split-screen across its Story, Horde, and Versus modes, with each mode delivering a different type of Gears experience. No matter what mode you’re playing though, it’s a sure bet that it will involve pumping a ridiculous amount of bullets into ugly, spongy enemies, as this has been Gears’ M.O. from the very beginning. Honestly, it’s hard to single out any one Gears of War title for playing with a buddy, as they all still hold up well and with local co-op shooters becoming rarer with each passing year, it’s one of the few series that is still playable in this way.
5. Borderlands 2.
Borderlands 2 was designed with co-op in mind, as evidenced by how ingrained it is in the game’s various systems. With a great story and outrageous humor, playing through Borderlands 2 is an amazing experience that is only enhanced with a friend at your side. The game involves shooting enemies and collecting loot, a concept that can become tedious when playing alone. However, when playing with a friend on a shared screen, collecting loot becomes even more addictive, especially considering that it gives a much higher chance of acquiring the game’s superior, most sought after weapons. When playing alone, the game becomes a shallow grind while not giving enough opportunities to acquire elite weapons. Although still fun due to the story and dialogue, the shortcomings of the single player campaign are magnified after experiencing it in co-op. And if you pick up the remastered version included in The Handsome Collection for PS4 and Xbox One, you can even expand the local split-screen from two players to four, although it’s not exactly an ideal way to experience the game.
4. Halo: The Master Chief Collection + Halo: Reach.
Although the franchise disappointingly moved away from split-screen play with Halo 5: Guardians (although the backlash to this decision has us convinced that Halo 6 will put it back in), Halo has always provided one of the best local co-op experiences in gaming. Fighting through the franchise’s many campaigns is enjoyable solo, sure, but it’s substantially better when you have a friend saving the galaxy by your side. Halo’s focus on large groups of enemies and vehicle segments practically demand to be played in co-op and the best part is that when you’re finished with the campaign, you can bring the fight online.
A few of the Halo games, such as Halo 3 and Halo Reach , include the ability to play online with up to four player split-screen and while it does take away from the experience a bit by only getting to look at a quarter of the screen, taking on other players online with three other friends in the same room is an experience that can’t be found in many other games. The best way to experience the Halo franchise’s split-screen offerings is The Master Chief Collection for Xbox One, which collects together Halo 1-4 , as well as Halo 3: ODST if you pay a small fee. Unfortunately, isn’t part of the compilation, but since it’s available for download on Xbox One, it can be attained very easily.
3. Left 4 Dead 2.
Valve’s entertaining shooter is the finest, most complete first-person shooter available that can be played in a cooperative fashion on the same screen. Requiring a high level of communication between team members, Left 4 Dead 2 proves immersive and shows what cooperative gameplay is meant to be. Mostly due to the high difficulty level, teamwork is absolutely essential in order to succeed. While still functional while playing solely with AI teammates, in order to fully experience Left 4 Dead 2 all four players need to be controlled by humans. The game only allows two players per console however, so you’ll have link up through a LAN connection or join others online in order to get the full experience. Getting a full party together is thrilling and addictive and since it leaves the single player campaign in the dust, deserves recognition as being one of the finest co-op games around. Left 4 Dead 2 requires team tactics in order to progress, making it an entertaining experience. Tense and pulse-pounding, this scary game is sure to get hearts racing, especially with friends in tow.
2. Secret of Mana.
They just don’t make them like they used to. Secret of Mana is a unique game in its own class. An action-RPG featuring hack-and-slash elements and Final Fantasy-esque RPG elements, this melding of genres proves fantastic and immensely enjoyable. The distinction of this game, however, is that the three playable characters can be controlled by other humans. Rather than have the AI stumble around with the two other party members, they are fully-controllable by friends. Imagine a multiplayer game with classic JRPG elements and you have Secret of Mana . There was nothing like it when it was released back in 1993 on the Super Nintendo and inexcusably, the JRPG genre has not had another memorable cooperative game to match it since. Available on the Wii virtual console, Secret of Mana has never been easier to play with three players. In the past, this Super Nintendo classic required the multitap controller peripheral to allow more than two players at once, so now is as good a time as ever to check it out if you never have.
1. Super Mario 3D World.
New Super Mario Bros on the Nintendo Wii introduced cooperative play to the Mario series and was a smash hit. The titles were highly enjoyable and the co-op play was also pretty competitive. Unfortunately, the side-scrolling and constrained 2D worlds presented camera problems and pacing issues. If one character rushed too far off screen, it would become distracting. Likewise, some levels needed to completed at a certain speed and if one player was lagging behind, it would cause problems for the group. Super Mario 3D World remedies this issue with a full 3D adventure available to be played with four players. The camera functions far better, zooming out at appropriate distances. Featuring four distinct Mario characters each equipped with their own unique style and control (compared to the NSMB series, which included identical Toad characters as players 3 and 4), Super Mario 3D World proves that local co-op play still deserves a place in today’s gaming landscape.
