Whether you're big or small, there's a lot to like about these little ninjas and their lengthy journey. by Austin Light on Oct 5, 2009 19:17 PM. Mini Ninjas is a decidedly different turn for developer IO Interactive, maker of the Hitman series. This action adventure is low on gruesome assassinations and high on lighthearted fun, but that doesn't mean fans of stealth-kill simulators, or anyone else for that matter, should skip over it. Mini Ninjas is an approachable and enjoyable game with a charming art style that brings its lively world to life. There are a few kinks that present some minor annoyances, but they don't detract too much from what is overall a delightfully plucky adventure. Your hat can block arrows and serve as a boat or a sled. The story is a straight-up ninja road trip. It follows the young ninja Hiro and his portly friend Futo as they embark on a mission to find their four missing ninja pals and stop an evil samurai warlord from taking over the world. On their long journey to the warlord's headquarters, the two little ninjas will find their friends, learn new spells, and battle magic samurai. There's not much narrative, but what's there is entertaining and often humorous. The cinematics that are unlocked when you find each ninja aren't included in the campaign for some reason, but they're worth seeking out in the main menu and watching. They're extremely well produced, beautifully animated, and funny to boot. Mini Ninjas is a linear adventure split up across sprawling levels. However, the journey is more than a simple waltz from point A to point B. The broad and inviting level design encourages exploration and creates the illusion of a lush, open world. Each level has a sprinkling of hidden paths that lead to shrines, enemy encampments, or collectibles, some of which are used to mix helpful potions. You'll also find shortcuts that can lead you around a confrontation, and scenic paths that are as treacherous as they are beautiful. The level design does a great job of making the game feel like one cohesive journey, a singular quest to rescue friends and defeat the bad guys. There are a variety of ways for you to take down said bad guys. Each character has a strong attack and a weak attack as well as a special move inspired by his weapon or personality. Hidden shrines in many of the levels will unlock new spells, like the ability to control any of the animals you find hopping around or stuck in cages. It's fun to free a caged boar from an enemy encampment and then use that same boar to chase down enemies for some sweet swine vengeance. If you'd rather keep your ninja action traditional, you can purchase or find projectile weapons like shurikens and cherry bombs. Using them isn't as fun as sending flaming meteors down on your enemies, but they're effective nonetheless. Possess a fox for a speedy retreat, or a bear for a good old-fashioned mauling. Despite all the options, the relatively simple combat--which doesn't usually require much more thought than mashing the attack button--gets repetitive toward the end of the game. That's because some of the spells, weapons, and even ninjas, aren't worth using. With his magic abilities and homing-attack special move, Hiro is by far the most useful character. Unless you just like the looks of other ninjas, there's no compelling reason to use some of them. The developer went to the trouble of giving each of the six ninjas a different weapon, personality, and set of animations, so it's unfortunate that there aren't more reasons to use them all. In addition to the ninjas' various combat techniques, Mini Ninjas features a simple stealth system that lets you hide in tall grass or on rooftops. You can sneak-attack an enemy for extra damage or skip a fight entirely by staying out of sight. Sometimes it's hard to tell what enemies can and can't see, even if the stealth icon is showing that you're hidden, especially when enemy archers are on the rooftops. The enemy AI follows the same pattern in every fight: they swarm you at first sight and then spread out (or run in fear) as you thin their ranks. If you'd rather run for the woods and skip the fighting, you can do that, and the enemies won't always follow, but you'll miss out on gaining experience, which is used to increase your health, your special-move capacity, and more. It would have been nice to receive experience rewards for stealth. If you sneak or run your way through most of the game, you'll end up with an underpowered group of ninjas. The controls are silky smooth: wall runs, stealth kills, and special moves are easy to pull off and fun to watch, because each ninja does every action differently from the other five. For example, Suzume spins her flute in the water like a motor boat, while Futo uses his giant hammer as a paddle. When you're not pressing buttons to fight, your second thumb will be at work on the right analog stick, constantly adjusting the struggling camera. It does an OK job as you run through the countryside, but it has a tendency to hang back and lag behind once you start making sudden turns, which is a real pain when you're indoors. You can sneak your way through some locations, but just don't look down. It might not blow you away at first glance, but Mini Ninjas' consistent and attractive art style will win you over in time. The characters and environments are charmingly simple, like vector art or the 3D version of a 2D flash animation. Everything fits together perfectly, and not a single stone looks out of place in this world, making it a joy to explore every inch of every level. The time of day is different in each level, which helps create the illusion of a long journey. One level is bathed in a yellowish dusk and another in midnight blue. The difference between the three versions of the game are negligible, though if you have a PC that can run it at the highest settings, you'll get cleaner textures and crisper, more vibrant colors with that version. The music sets the mood perfectly with authentic-sounding Japanese instruments--a lone flute accompanies your isolated exploration of a snowy mountaintop, while a chorus of drums plays as you descend during your frantic escape. The sound design balances the serious and somber tunes with silly screeches from the enemies and popping sound effects as they poof back into their original animal forms. Mini Ninjas is a great start to what could well become a staple franchise for Eidos and IO. If you're hunting for collectibles, you'll easily spend eight to 10 hours on your journey. Even on the hardest setting, the game is never unbearably difficult. The bosses all follow predictable patterns, and fighting enemies is often optional, so most of your frustrations will come at the hands of the poor camera. But Mini Ninjas makes it easy to see past these issues and have a great time.

After nearly a decade of video game development, IO Interactive has made a name for themselves with a handful of successful titles. Perhaps best known for their Hitman series, in which you take control of Agent 47 and complete numerous assassination missions, IO Interactive has seemingly had a tendency to cater more towards mature gamers. In fact, except for Freedom Fighters, which was released in 2003 and rated T, every game they've released has been deemed too graphic for audiences under the age of seventeen. This makes their recent release, Mini Ninjas, more than a bit of an oddity. With a rating of E10+ Mini Ninjas is a drastic departure from what you'd expect from the company. Instead of playing as the likes of a highly trained killer or murderous mercenary, Mini Ninjas actually puts you in control of a ragtag group of children ninjas on a quest to restore peace to their once serene homeland. As a group they were trained by the Ninja Master, each specializing in their own styles and weapons until a great evil began to threaten the land. One by one they were sent out to investigate this disturbance, never to be heard from again, until only two of the students remained. At the start of the game you are able to control either Hiro (the main character) or his friend Futo (a hulking ninja who wields a large hammer). Hiro is much quicker and more agile than Futo, but Futo is a stronger character who is better suited to fighting larger, tougher enemies. As you play through the game, you'll eventually find and save all of the other previously sent out ninjas, which will add them to your stable of playable characters. Players can quickly switch between any of the ninjas using a ninja selection wheel, allowing the use of the most appropriate ninja for each type of enemy and/or situation. Still, no matter which character you use the game's combat feels fairly similar. Hitting an enemy with a sword is not unlike hitting them with a hammer, a flute, claws, a spear, etc. Only Futo with his massive hammer and Shun with his bow and arrows feel truly distinctive, and in Futo's case that isn't exactly a compliment, given that he feels quite a bit clumsier than the others. With only two attack buttons that can be pressed multiple times or in alternating fashions to create combos, your range of attacks can also feel somewhat limited. However, as the game progresses you'll also discover multiple items and Kuji spells that help to spice things up a bit. During the course of your adventure, you'll come across the ninja staples you'd expect such as throwing stars that stun enemies and smoke bombs to help you to escape/hide. While these items are fairly easy to find and attain, you'll actually have to do some hunting to uncover new spells to add to your repertoire. To gain a new spell, you'll need to find shrines that are hidden throughout the game's levels and present the proper offering to activate them. Every shrine requires a white flower, usually hidden somewhere nearby, in order to decipher its wisdom. None of these spells are absolutely necessary to proceed through the game, but they are often incredibly useful against larger groups of enemies and also help to focus the player on what I thought was the best part of Mini Ninjas: the exploration of its levels. Almost every level in the game is filled to the brim with things to discover. Aside from the spell shrines, you can also discover hidden money to buy recipes, caged animals to set free, statues, and various plants and fungi. While the statues don't really help the player in any real way, everything else provides some sort of gameplay benefit. After recipes have been purchased, your collected vegetation can be used to make all manner of potions to heal yourself or refill your spell casting energy.

If you're new to IGN, I'll let you in on a little secret: I love Japan. Actually, this isn't so much a "secret" as it is "blatant fanboyism," but who's keeping track? My love for all things Japanese extends into videogames, music, food and films. I usually jump at the chance to work on Japanese games -- as is evident by my fabled devotion to the Final Fantasy series -- and anime-style games still draw my attention more often than not. But I'll be honest when I say I was hesitant about Mini Ninjas. Not only is the game taking classic Japanese themes and making them palatable for children, but the entire project was handled by Io Interactive -- the folks behind the Hitman franchise. But having now played Mini Ninjas extensively, I can tell you that this is one of the most heart-warming tributes to "ninja culture" that I've ever seen by a non-Japanese studio. Everything from the surprisingly stunning visuals to the soothing music makes this a real treat to play. Although the gameplay is fairly straight-forward and somewhat simple for my tastes, the overall experience is one that should definitely be had by gamers that like Japanese culture and ninja flicks -- and this is a game you can share with kids. The story of Mini Ninjas is a simple one, as are many classic ninja/samurai movies. An old Ninja Master senses a great disturbance in the balance of nature and begins sending his most trusted students down Ninja Mountain and out into the world to investigate. But with each passing season, the ninja students do not return. After a long and troubled period of waiting, the Ninja Master sends his final two students, Hiro and Futo, to rescue their friends and investigate the source of the environmental disturbances. As it turns out, the Evil Samurai Warlord has returned from his ancient defeat and is using dark Kuji magic to turn innocent animals into mindless samurai minions. It's up to Hiro and his friends to stop the Evil Samurai Warlord before the world is torn asunder by his improper use of Kuji magic. Mini Ninjas is a third-person action/adventure game that takes all the classic ninja aesthetics we know and removes the extreme violence. While this might turn prospective players away immediately, I encourage you to stay with me. Despite being completely safe for a child to play, Mini Ninjas is still very much a great ninja journey and an admirable tribute to the Japanese themes that Io Interactive clearly loves. Instead of cutting away at evil samurai and seeing blood and limbs fly about, Hiro and co. slash through enemies which simply vanish in a cloud of magical smoke, as the minions revert to their previous forms (which are mostly cute, cuddly animals). As you progress through the various levels towards the Evil Samurai Warlord, Hiro will rescue his ninja companions that were sent (and captured) before him. With each friend rescued, another character is available for use and can be switched to at any time. Each character has a Primary Attack, Block Breaker Attack (which stuns enemies) and a Power Attack. The Power Attacks are techniques special to that particular character and drain a single sphere of Unstable Ki energy with each use. Each adorable ninja can also sprint, move stealthily through bushes and along rooftops, as well as make use of collected/purchased items. Combat in Mini Ninjas could arguably be the "weakest point" of the Mini Ninjas experience, even though it's still a solid system. It's a bit simple at the beginning of the game, as pounding away at your Primary Attack will defeat most enemies without a problem. Later in the game, however, different enemy types -- which can be efficiently tackled with certain characters -- are introduced, and then huge groups of enemies attack all at once, making battles much more interesting. PC gamers will be happy to know that a gamepad works perfectly well here, mirroring the 360 experience. A mouse and keyboard can be used, but it makes combat a bit more cumbersome. Hiro is the most powerful of the six characters because of his ability to use Kuji magic. As you progress through the game, you can uncover Kuji shrines, which teach Hiro a variety of spells. Hiro is the only ninja capable of harnessing Kuji magic, and those spells can be extremely effective when fighting against the Evil Samurai Warlord's minions. Even if you're not searching for Kuji shrines, there's plenty to look for in the game's surprisingly open levels. Fruit, herbs and mushrooms can be collected to mix potions, and collectible Jizo statues can be found tucked away in the unlikeliest of corners. There's a lot to do in Mini Ninjas, even if the battles are a little straight-forward for hardcore action gamers. But the most stunning features in Mini Ninjas, without a doubt, are the visuals and music. Even with its childish appearance, Mini Ninjas is a beautiful game that captures classic Japanese environments with its own unique charm. Ninja essentials like bamboo forests, snow-topped mountains and dusk-lit rice fields are all here to enjoy. Complementing those visuals is a breath-taking soundtrack, filled with whimsical flutes and heart-pounding drums. Crank the volume on this one, or wear a good pair of headphones. Even though Mini Ninjas might not be as in-depth or content heavy as its modern peers, it's still a beautiful, fun game that opens up ninja culture to kids. The folks at Io Interactive clearly have a lot of love for the genre, as the stirring environments and music make this journey a pleasure to experience. Although the combat is fun and grows as the game progresses, Mini Ninjas is still a little on the simple side and that will throw some gamers off (also, the boss fights are giant quick time events/button prompts, which is disappointing). With that said, this is the perfect game to introduce younger siblings or your own children to the classic Japanese tales and ninja quests so many of us love. I consider Mini Ninjas to be an extremely pleasant surprise. © 1996-2018 Ziff Davis, LLC. We have updated our PRIVACY POLICY and encourage you to read it by clicking here. by Amanda L. Kondolojy. April 21, 2009 - Anyone who enjoys ninja media knows that the world of these stealthy icons is vast. From the colorful world of Naruto, to the dark shadows of Ninja Gaiden, you could say that ninjas are the "rainbow coalition" of gaming. With characters that are white, black, and even purple and blue, Ninja lore leaves no race (real or imaginary) unrepresented. Mini Ninjas looks to continue this inclusive trend by showcasing a new kind of ninja: a small one. The premise of mini ninjas is fairly simple. There is an evil ninja warlord (living in a Fortress of Doom, naturally) who is changing cute little animals into evil ninjas through Kuji magic, and this is upsetting the balance of nature as well as the order of the ninjas. Since the world's animal population is rapidly decreasing, an increasing amount of natural disasters are occurring. Logically, if this evil warlord is not defeated, the world will end, which is why the Mini Ninjas must spring into action. Your hero, appropriately named Hiro, is a ninja-in-training who is on an epic quest to go to a fiery mountain to face this evil warlord, converting evil ninjas back into cuddly animals along the way. The story doesn't sound like it is going to be all that deep, but the lighthearted eco-friendly story should make for some cute (not to mention humorous) moments. The combat system here will rely on your ability to use both standard physical attacks and ninja magic to take care of enemies. The main character will also be able to take the form of nearby animals as well. Instead of just summoning animal help, Hiro will actually be able to take over their consciousness and attack enemies as that animal. Although the extent of the animals Hiro can possess is not known, we know he will be able to take the form of bears and boars, which is a pretty good start. In addition to Hiro, players will also be able to use lumbering side-character Futo in combat. Futo is a lot bigger than Hiro (though still mini by comparison with other characters) and can use more powerful physical attacks, due to his larger stature as well as his giant hammer weapon. Of course, there has to be some sort of tactical trade-off, and it looks like Futo will be a lot slower in combat than Hiro. In addition to these two main characters, the official trailer hints at a third playable character that can use a pea-shooter type weapon for long-range attacks. In addition to the combat, Mini Ninjas will also emphasize stealth gameplay. Characters will be able to hide and wait for enemies to come within a certain range and will then be able to attack from a strategic point of view. This stealth tactic certainly isn't new in the realm of ninja games, but it is nice that small, tactical touches are being added to a game that looks to be appealing to the casual/family sect. Another interesting thing about the game's battle system is that much of the combat will use the environment. Much like other ninja games (which shall remain nameless), the game will challenge you to find alternate ways to dispose of enemies, such as using traps or nearby architecture to foil their attacks. But combat and story aside, what has me excited about Mini Ninjas is the visuals. The game has a very cutesy style, with big-headed characters and cartoonish environments. The game's look is almost comparable to Pirates vs. Ninja Dodgeball, but I hesitate to make a full comparison between these two titles, as the graphics in Mini Ninjas look much more polished and complete. The game's cutesy style carries over from main characters to enemies, and even animals. There are plenty of bright colors, and characters have many over-the-top mannerisms and expressions. Mini Ninjas definitely looks like it is going to be a very cute and family-friendly title, and the gameplay doesn't look all that shabby either. Although it probably won't be as deep as some of the other ninja-inspired games out there, this one looks to trade the blood and gore for pandas and puzzling, which is certainly not a bad thing. And of course, throw a whole ton of cuteness into the mix and it looks like you have a winning title. Mini Ninjas has a tentative release date for this fall and is coming to the Wii, Xbox 360, PS3, PC, and the DS. Blocked IP Address. Mini Ninjas is a fun and easy game, and definitely one of the better kids’ games out there. All achievements can be unlocked in one playthrough, and any achievements you are missing upon completion of the game can be obtained by replaying levels. I recommend playing the game on Hard difficulty straight away, as it is relatively simple. This saves you from having to play through twice, since the difficulty achievements are stackable. If you are having trouble with a certain level, the difficulty can be changed from the in-game menu. The game records this on a level-to-level basis, so you may replay the level on Hard difficulty at a later time to unlock the achievement (again, do not replay levels before completing the game). All in all, this is a very easy and enjoyable game. As long as you follow the guide and this Road Map you should unlock the full 1000 in a very short time. Will unlock on Level 1. Will unlock on Level 1. Will unlock on Level 2. Will unlock on Level 6. Will unlock on Level 14. Will unlock on Level 10. Build up throughout the game - Will unlock on Level 14. When he has lost some health again, there will be new series of small fart clouds. Again, jump over them. After these series of small fart clouds, he'll have 4 charged fart attacks (faster than the small ones). Again, jump over those as well, until he sends a new fart cloud towards you. Run up the boss again to start the 3rd and final button sequence. 2nd button sequence: , tap , , tap , 3rd button sequence: , tap , , tap , Will unlock on Level 13. In this area, you will notice three red pillars: a small one on your left, a large one in front of you at the back, and a medium sized one to your right. Go straigth ahead and go up the stairs. Hide behind the large pillar in the back. Once the boss cuts the red pillar, the 1st button sequence will start. Now, go back up the stairs and go right towards the medium sized red pillar. Again, the boss will cut the top of it, starting the 2nd button sequence. Now time for the last red pillar. Again, go back up the stairs and this time go left to hide behind the small red pillar. Once the top gets cut off, the 3rd button sequence will start. 2nd button sequence: , tap , , , tap , , , 2nd button sequence: , tap , , , , , , , Will unlock on Level 16. Story related and cannot be missed. When the fight actually starts, you'll get a tip by pressing . It says to sneak up the boss. So. that's what we'll do. But be careful though, as his claw attacks may deal a great amount of damage! In the last part, the boss will be on the roof top. The only thing to do here, is run to the top of the roof to activate the 3rd and last button sequence. 1st button sequence: , tap , , tap. 2nd button sequence: , tap , , 3rd button sequence: , tap , , tap , , , , Will unlock on Level 22. No button sequence this time. Kuji Magic is the key! First, you will want to equip all the 'Storm'-like spells that you can access by pressing while in combat. Be sure to have enough Flasks of Strong Ginseng, and enough Healing Potions or anything else that can restore your health (sushi, honeycomb, . ) This boss his health is also his defence. The balls spinning around him, are his shield. Destroying those balls, will lower his health as well! Keep an eye on your health at all times! Kill the minions as soon as possible, as they'll only get in your way When you see the purple-black magic coming to you, swing your sword to send it back to him (as with the mages in the game, remember?). This will stun him for a while. Beware when he's lifted, as he will have special attacks. His lightning attacks can hurt you badly! When he's lifted, sprint by holding across the edges of the map to avoid being hit by his special attacks for most of the time. The way I did it: I only used Meteor Storm to attack the spinning balls. Immediately I recharged my Ki energy by selecting the Flask of Strong Ginseng from my inventory by pressing . If I had a new opportunity, I used the Meteor Storm immediately again, otherwise I was killing the minions. Once he was lifted, I ran around the map holding (got hit a few times though, but immediately drank a healing potion). As soon as he was back on the ground in the middle, I ran up to him and used the Meteor Storm again. Keep repeating this strategy a few times, and his spinning balls should be destroyed after 3-4 Meteor Storm attacks. Build up throughout the game - Will unlock on Level 21 if done correctly. Before going to the next level, you can check if you've found and freed all animals. In case you've missed some, don't worry and move on with the story. Certainly DO NOT replay the level! Just take a note of which level you've missed some, and return after having beaten the game. Build up throughout the game - Will unlock on Level 2 or later. Build up throughout the game - Will unlock on Level 15 or later. Easiest on Levels 17 or 19. Although there are several places you could get this achievement, level 17 "Snowy Canyon" and 19 "The Big Jump" are the easiest levels to get this achievement on.
