The idea is to wipe out the threat posed by a “terrifying new enemy.” Whether you’ve played the original or not, this is a safe bet for any RTS fans out there. And the award for most unlikely video game title goes to Cuphead , a game that could also take an award for not looking like a video game at all. Done in the striking art style of 1930s cartoons, Cuphead puts you in the shoes of the title character, who has made a deal with the devil and has to defeat bosses to repay his debt. Gameplay-wise, you run around and fire off projectiles to defeat enemies. The bosses are huge, with widely varying move sets and abilities. All in all, this promises to be a game unlike any other. If it’s as enjoyable to play as it is to look at, Cuphead is sure to please any action platformer fan. 3. Crackdown 3. The Crackdown series follows a futuristic cop in a corrupt, open-world city overrun by violent gangs. What’s remarkable about it is how you start out as a pretty normal guy, but thanks to incremental upgrades, by the end of the game you can leap up the sides of skyscrapers and wipe out swarms of bad guys single-handedly. We haven’t seen much of the third installment, but we do know that it will offer a cooperative campaign, destructible environments, and will take advantage of the Xbox One’s cloud computing feature. Watch the trailer above to get an idea of what to expect once the game comes out. 4. Sea of Thieves. Microsoft’s Rare Studio is behind this sea-faring title about being a pirate. You and other players will take to the seas, sailing ships, engaging in cannon battles, fighting fantastical creatures, and looking for treasure. Developed by Platinum Games, the makers of such excellent action games as Bayonetta 2 and Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance , Scalebound looks like a fantasy game of epic proportions. You play as an adventurer who travels to a distant world full of enormous monsters. Luckily for you, you soon befriend a dragon who helps you take on these vicious beasts. Really, that’s about all we know so far about the game, but the trailer looks suitably grand. If the game is anything like that (or like the excellent titles Platinum has made in the past), it’s definitely worth keeping an eye on. 6. State of Decay 2. Looking to have some fun by surviving a zombie apocalypse? This is the game for you. State of Decay 2 follows in its predecessor’s footsteps by offering up a grueling survival role-playing game. Since surviving with friends is always more fun than surviving alone, it features up to four-player co-op multiplayer, so your buddies can drop in or out of your game at any time. Check out the trailer above if you could use more zombies in your life. 7. Phantom Dust. This game has been on quite a journey. While it was first released on the original Xbox in 2004 to positive reviews, Microsoft announced that a full reboot was in the works for Xbox One. Gigantic. The MOBAs just don’t stop coming, do they? Gigantic is the latest in a long line of “multiplayer online battle arenas” that pit two teams of five unique fighters against each other as they vie for control of the map. The idea is to power up your team each match to turn them “gigantic,” which provides a big leg up in battle. The best thing about it is that it will be free-to-play, so you won’t have to spend a time to give it a shot. When it comes to developers, Capybara Games is one of the most creative teams around. Capy is responsible for the fantastic strategy puzzler Might and Magic: Clash of Heroes , the artistic adventure game Superbrothers: Sword and Sworcery EP , and the mind-bending shooter Super Time Force . If the developer’s next title lives up to the company’s high standard, you won’t want to miss it. The title in question is Below , a top-down action adventure game that stars a tiny hero on an enormous island. Unlike in most games, death is permanent here, meaning you have to start from square one each time you perish. That’s a risky choice that could lose a lot of potential customers. To find out if it pays off, we’ll have to wait for its release. Very little is known about this quiet, dark, atmospheric game, but the teaser trailer above sure makes a statement. It’s an action RPG about a group of wanderers in a dark world that’s full of ash and mysterious creatures (including a horned sky whale). According to developer Aurora44, “At its core, Ashen is about forging relationships. Only a portion of the current map is available to play on. We will expand it as fast as we can. Completely freeform basebuilding system - the Miscreated basebuilding system is different from all of the other existing survival games available and it gives you total control to make as complex and pretty of a base as you want. This is not the typical, snap-together Lego style system other games have. Clans are persistent (remembered between server restarts and logging in/out) and per server. In-game VoIP with distance attenuation. Five vehicles are currently fully functional in the game. Scavenge for parts to get them running! A basic crafting system is implemented allowing you to make more powerful melee weapons and items such as advanced bandages. The crafting system is being expanded as the game progresses. Bullet trajectory will change based on gravity, air resistance, and wind. Encounters can be spawned dynamically and located anywhere on the map. Weapons and items will usually be found in logical places, but can also be found anywhere in the world. Be sure to check everywhere for items – lockers, stoves, cupboards, and many more. Some appliances can be opened to look inside. Your character’s stats and items will be saved when you exit the game. When you log back in, you will have your health, items and location all restored. Store items on your character and collect weapons, ammo and other useful items. You can also find additional items to increase the amount of storage space your character has – like backpacks, shirts, and pants. Keep your hunger and water levels up in order for your character to function at maximum efficiency. Low levels of food and hunger have a negative impact on your character’s performance. When you die all of the items you were carrying stay with your character’s corpse. Other player’s can take them, or you can retrieve them yourself if they are still there when you get back to the corpse. Kill anyone at anytime and steal their loot. There are no safe zones. However, it will be very beneficial in the long run to make a few friends. Rain, fog, wind, and other weather patterns are all dynamically generated and will create unique game play opportunities. The intensity of weather patterns will also be supported – from light fog to dense fog, for example. Charge in during the day or wait until night time for a sneaky approach. Miscreated has proven itself in recent years to be one of the most interesting survival games on the market on Steam and so it is no surprise really that envious eyes from console gamers are studying Miscreated in the hopes of a potential PS4 release. For fans who are hoping to see Miscreated release onto the PS4 there is a glimmer of hope for you. In a Reddit post asking for a Miscreated PS4 release one of the games lead designers commented on the matter: “Porting the game to PS4 is on our minds, but its not a simple drag and drop deal. Core fundamentals of the user interface would most likely need to be re-designed to work well with a controller interface, it is very much a mouse and keyboard experience right now. That being said we would love to see a PS4 version of the game in the future but our main focus is to make the game as good as it can possibly be on PC first. When and if the time is right we’ll make something official but for now its far off.” So the answer to the question of a possible Miscreated PS4 release would be not at this time. The game is still in early access mode on Steam and so it would be very surprising for Sony to want an unfinished game on their system and it would also add more pressure to the current development team who are focusing on the PC release. If comments from DayZ creator Dean Hall are anything to go by, it sounds like Microsoft is cooking up some exciting new features for the Xbox One. After meeting with Microsoft to discuss a console version of DayZ, Hall said he got to see some "really interesting" features coming to the platform, though he's not allowed to discuss them just yet. "I have nothing against consoles, and there's some really interesting and exciting things happening. That was one of the cool things about meeting with Microsoft," Hall told Eurogamer. "There were definitely some things they said that I'm not allowed to talk about that I was like, 'Wow! That's interesting . Why don't you tell people that?' But I guess they want to make sure everything all goes together and that." Unfortunately, Hall gave no additional information about what these exciting new Xbox One features might be. For its part, Microsoft has maintained that the Xbox One product roadmap is a marathon, not a sprint, with new features and functionality rolling out over time. Hall also said that he's met with Sony to discuss a console version of DayZ for presumably the PlayStation 3 and/or PlayStation 4. He explained that a decision about a console version of DayZ is likely to be made by the end of 2014. He made clear that a console iteration of the zombie game is not in development right now, and if it does get green-lit, it will probably take 12 months to create a console version. Elsewhere in the interview, Hall said the full version of DayZ will probably launch sometime in the spring or summer of 2015. The game has already sold 1.5 million copies through its in-development Early Access alpha version. A beta is expected to go live before the end of 2014. And when DayZ does see its full, finished release, Hall said he anticipates that the game might be significantly different than the version we know today. "It could even be fundamentally different," Hall said. "As some of these new features come on--even some of the things we introduce now--it suddenly changes the whole way the game's played. We finally got it so that ruined objects don't really work any more; that suddenly changed the way players were behaving. If you shoot someone and destroy their gear, it doesn't work any more. Even little things like that can have profound effects." Hall confirmed this week that he will leave the DayZ development team by the end of the year and return to his home country of New Zealand. However, his contract stipulates that he's required to be involved with the future of the game in some capacity on an ongoing basis.
