My first review, after a few days, looks generous; but now, almost 3 weeks on and perhaps a little over 200 hours play [shared between xbox and ps4], I'm struggling to rate it any higher than 4/10.
So lets get the source of these 4 points out of the way:
It has a very acceptable choice of cars, modifications and handling dynamics [1point.] There is a good variety of events, from easy to very challenging, and in the main they are enjoyable [1 point] The vinyl editor is fiddly and limited but with patience plus creativity, you can just about achieve anything [1 point] There is the environment, themed as it is, a bit on the gloomy side, but large enough, varied enough and interesting enough [1 point]
Now, the pointless;
I will start with the glaringly obvious statement of 'This is a racing game' and, as the game and franchise reminds us, there is a 'Need For Speed.' For the casual player this is perhaps not an issue but for those of us who vigorously compete against all-comers, it is vital that the Speedwalls give us the information required and are geared up for competitive racing. This means event completion times need to, and must, go beyond minutes & seconds, we simply must have tenths & hundredths of seconds, maybe even thousandths. This level of accuracy is vital, these fractions are the difference between being first and being the first loser; the rivalry that exists in online racing is intense. The speedwall should also be available automatically & immediately after an event ends without having to wait around 10 seconds for the cinematic to return you to 'free-roam' and without having to perform 3 actions to view the updated information. The first thing a racer wants to know once they hit that finish line is 'how did I do & how does that affect my position' Perhaps every Speedwall should be 'topped' with the 'World Record' for that event?
We have 'route-tracks' to lead us through the events but many are very poorly placed, follow them at your peril. There are checkpoints in absurd places, some of which, if you drive a 'racing-line' you will miss completely and effectively your race is over. There are 'invisible hazards on race tracks that either stop you dead, make you crash or launch you like a missile into the air. The starts to events are awful, as you come out of the cinematic, you can be face to face with a truck or even facing in the wrong direction. The 'multiplayer' [again, just like in Rivals] is totally impractical and can only be achieved with careful planning and an absurd routine. It's sad that games such as GTA V can handle all of these issues flawlessly and yet, a much more dedicated racing franchise fails miserable on all points.
A car racing game with no steering-wheel support, no manual gears and unbelievably, no car horn [which was about the only one sure way to attract the attention of your fellow lobby players]
Off course I'm nit-picking, I paid plenty of money for an over-hyped average game with AI cars that attack you on every turn, trucks with 5-watt tail lights that are set like traps for you to impact into at 370km/h and cars suddenly spawning right in front of you as you hurtle down the freeway or canyon winds. 'Collectibles' that are lame, tame and pointless [literally], sweeping blue-light flashes that constantly blind you as you approach that right-hander at great speed [where one of them trucks will be waiting] off course this is all more noticeable once you have passed the cinematic story and the constant phone calls and messages and have entered the realm of racing against your peers.

A Decent Return.
I love the older NFS games like most people. And in my honest opinion, it's alright for what it offers. Yes the handling is very awkward, but I've realized that this game is all about tuning your cars as you upgrade them. Basically if you're going for pure drifting (which is what the majority of this game seems to focus on) than you must go for a drift style build. And another thing is that I've always played the older games in automatic. But here, auto seems to be like a sin because it slows you so bad especially in drifting. So manual is a must use. And the car selecion isn't too bad #SkylineMasterRace. But overall, this is a pretty decent start to coming back to the roots of what made NFS so popular before. On a personal note though it's really nice to see EA and Ghost take 2016 off from making the next game. So major props to both. If you're interested in trying the game I recommend either you get the EA Access 1 month or find a good rental (same thing anyway kinda)

It's Starting to Look Like the Old NFS.
When I think of Need for Speed, I think of ridiculous customization and arcade style driving. I think this game was good and I did like the story a lot, but the vehicle physics were too bad to the point where you'd slightly turn your car and the back end would literally slide out for you; this game's physics engine was way too arcade-like. I did enjoy the car customization but I have seen a lot more in the past from NFS (neon lights, trunk customization, and how doors open in NFS Underground 2 and Autosculpt in NFS Carbon). I'm wondering if the developers are going to bring those back in future games to make it seem amazing and new, although I wouldn't be surprised. My favorite NFS is Carbon, simply because the amount of exterior modification was unreal. Carbon also had the best police chases in my opinion and they were fun if you just wanted to drive around and cause trouble for hours. Please bring back the old NFS and better driving physics!

The game overall plays alright, DEFINITELY takes some getting used to. However. The traffic A.I is far from even ok, the racers seem very miixed in capabilities some drive like actual people, some like they're in bloody Mad Max, others seem like they're taking the driving test for the first time. I do love the fact that even the slowest cars in the game can be made into pure bred race cars, I literally have just been using the Fox Body Mustang. My game as of currently somehow uninstalled itself and I cannot even re-install it. Sucks. Overall the game is decent not ground breaking, but if your into street racing this plays better than the crew. I am very mad that NFS is having these issues.

I Love the game Need for Speed saved it with the customization dang near everything you find in stores. MY FALTS are were are the classics. Dodge charger and challenger Shelby and others the Nissan 370z is missing. Subaru s i mean the game is amazeing but alot of the cars we grew up loving are simply not here, I would add all the cars from previous Need For Speed games to include trucks,SUVs,Classics and more hot rods. UNDERGLOW AND DYNO TESTING bassicly Remake NEED FOR SPEED UNDERGROUND 2.

Almost there.
This is the closest Need for Speed has come to making a great game in years. If it were not for all of the DRIFTING requirements. Stay together with A.I. that drive 30 miles an hour and then burn off on you. I just want to RACE. Not try to score imaginary points based on how long I can skid sideways. Customization is back and pretty good. I still want ground effect lights though. You can finally run from the cops with other people. But the drifting screws it all up. And now they are making a new game. Looks like mad max. I don't think they will never make a great game again. Its a shame they continue to put this crap out year after year but Lionhead was shut down.

pretty but no heart.
the game looks nice but it a boring racing game, and heres a hint you don have to upgrade you car cause the computer scales your opponents to you cars power, and there is no real feel of winning when the AI is programmed to keep the other cars close to you and over take you to keep the tension going, its all a set up, its just another racing game they put out there to make money, but on another note the customization is really good.

BEST DRIFT GAME YET!
When i first picked it up back at launch,i fell in love with the game, and thought i was a master in the begining allmost untouchable,a lil ways in it got hard, real hard,i couldnt catch that drift,so i took a break for a while, came back and all these updates made the game 100% better,i had fallen in love again, got 20 achievements in 10 days on off play, with moderate difficaulty, and the more harder ones to boot, all in all love the game, its awesomely fantastic,i shall play it for many more days, sad to hear about no more updates, the only 2 things i wish is that,is that time progression time of day and weather was a feature that was constantly changing to show time lapse, and different racing conditions, also a bigger more lengthier soundtrack, current songs are off the hook, but need more!also the abilaty to turn off music completely 4 those late night runs & engine roars would B awesome,& last more garage slots,@ launch 5 now 10,need 2 colect all,but overall seriously impressed with D game!

Almost every Forza fan will love this game.
As I am a Forza lover, I love racing games. But when I got my hands on Need for Speed Rivals, I loved it. The graffics almost looked exactly like Horizon 2. And when this Need for Speed came out, I needed it. The game looks more realistic than Horizon 3 and maybe more than Motorsport 6. It has a wide selection of cars. My only complaint is that I wish it could turn daytime. Other than that, no complaints. My second favorite game EVER.

What happened to NFS.
Cars drive terrible. Too dark to see anything or enjoy the surroundings. And dont get me started on dialog. F'N shoot me.. What happened? Remember the NFS Most Wanted back in early 2000's? That was when NFS was good. MAKE NFS GREAT AGAIN.

The game is OK. It needed an offline mode, better AI, and most of the achievements are too easy to get. Also, this game has an awful selection of cars. They did release a Hotrod update with two or three vehicles, but nothing I'd really want in a racing game. It is really missing a variety. If you want a quick way to boost your Gamerscore, get it. If you want an enjoyable racing game, don't bother.

Great but. Missing a vital part of racing games.
I bought this game with high hopes of it being one of the best NFS in the franchise. It is a great game, very fun and great customization options. The map is big which is always nice. But its missing a huge part of the online experience. Freeroam, not the freeroam that is currently offered where you are forced to do Speedlist races but true freeroam. Cmon EA and Ghost what happened? I am sure I'm not the only one feeling this way either. Can you guys PLEASE give us the online freeroam that we really want? You know that Forza Horizon 3 style freeroam where you can do just as much activities as you can on singleplayer? Please guys we are begging you to give us this experience, I'd love to meet up with my friends in a REAL freeroam online session and show off my custom made cars. Please please please patch in a real online freeroam. I would give it a 5 star rating if this gets done. One more thing, we needs cops on single player freeroam as well, not just in events.

Great Singleplayer.
Game is great, at least singleplayer. It improved much more than nfs2015, but still needs some stuff back from NfsU2 and specially Most Wanted/Carbon. We asked for cops, and you gave us cops, but only in missions, not free roam. Also, talking about free roam, map is huge and diverse, but you guys took out online free roam? I hope it's because we're still in pre-release and you're planing on putting it tomorrow or the next few days. Online Free Roam in a Open World Racing Game is a must. Please don't let us down, I've had every nfs game since NFS II (1997).

Best NFS I've ever played!
I'm 32 years old and played over 15 of the games in this franchise. By far the best and deluxe edition worth every penny! Around 82% missions done and clocked 23.5 hours so far. Can't wait for the DLCs and hopefully season-pass would be reasonably priced.

This is the NFS I wanted.
Fun handling, cheesy story, vast customization, it reminds me of NFS from my childhood. Great fun. The critics don't know what they're talking about, visit the NFS subreddit, r/needforspeed, for some real info.

Great, But Could Be Better!
The customizations and feel of the game is nice. It also features a great storyline which intrigues you to continue with the game. This is a great game, but also has major drawbacks that the developers need to look into to make it a truley fun game. Number one is the fact that the textures are still not loaded in completely when you spawn in after an event or starting the game. Number two is roaming cops and freeroam multiplayer, which would make the game a lot more fun and interesting. Lastly, and probably the one that irritates me the most is when you wreck in a race, your entire HUD, all directional arrows and checkpoints don't show until around 7 seconds after you already spawned in. I don't know if this happens to anyone else, but it does to me everytime and is extremely frustrating. However, on the good notes, another thing the developers did well was the audio for the cars. For example, the Jaguar F Type sounds incredibly amazing, especially the backfire👌👌👌

great job on this one, beyond better than the 2015 one, keep it up, SEE YOU IN THE STREETS.

I've been waiting for a story based NFS game for FAR too long . It's about time NFS made it back here, after the recent flops of MMO racing attempts.

No Issues for me at all.
This game has not crashed yet for me. However, It dosent save setting adjustments s far as Audio goes. It is a tad buggy as it ocassionally sticks durring races in the Campaign.

Missed NFS.
NFS Rivals was meh but NFS Payback is great, I'm glad NFS is coming back to its roots, loving the characters and story, I approve.

Not quite what I expected.
Game loads are long. Steering feels worse than arcade. Also no in-car camera option. Reminds me of The CREW. IMO not worth $84.79. Hope future updates fix issues. NEED For SPEED IS BETTER THAN THIS.

Need for speed xbox one
- The driving experience.
You get an exhilarating feeling of speed that no other major racing game releasing in the last few years really fulfils. As you progress through the story and the cars get faster and faster, the feeling only grows.
- The art and sound design is sensational.
The world isn't huge, but it's varied and beautiful. From hilly, swirling offroad mountain tracks to stretching desert roads to the bright night lights of the city, it's a joy to drive through. It reminds me of The Witcher 3 in how the game is a joy to traverse, taking in the sights, not just to sprint through until the credits roll.
- Brilliant sound design.
The roar of the engines, the stretched 'slurp' of the nitrous and the squeal of the drift sound excellent, no more so than when they reaches a cacophony combined with police sirens chasing you at 190 mph through oncoming traffic. The soundtrack doesn't mean much for a racing game, but it's got something for everyone- a healthy smattering of grime, rap and rock, featuring Queens of the Stone Age, Vince Staples and Skepta. There are a few stinkers, but the good outweighs the bad.
- The driving experience feels genuinely fresh.
It's a refreshing break from the racing sims that the market is moving closer towards. Sims are great in their own regard, but often fail to capture the joy of speed, destruction and carelessness a good arcade racer revels in.
- It copies the successes of its predecessors:
- Cops are a challenge and fun to battle and escape for the first time in years thanks to smart.
teamwork (due to well-made AI).
- The customisation (the only real pro in NFS 2015) is taken in Payback with bodykits galore.
(especially on the derelicts you can restore) and a wide set of decals, along with a good.
community tab where you can download popular 'wraps'.
- A full day and night cycle lets you have both the night gameplay people liked in Underground 1, 2.
and NFS 2015, as well as the sun-baked desert and sunset.
- This is a controversial opinion, but the story mode is actually alright.
There are issues, but the story is, in parts, wonderfully camp, daft and fun once you get over the hurdle of its exasperating stupidity. It's quite hefty and long too, keeping me busy for at least a good 20+ hours. David Ajala does a brilliant job as Mac, the drifter and offroader of your 'crew', with a carefree joy and lovely British accent and so does Jessica Madsen as Jess- for a few lines, at least.
- No cops in freeroam.
Why design them so well and criminally underuse them?
No cockpit camera. Particularly in Drag-type cars, the camera under nitrous boost zooms back to emphasise the speed, which is a nice effect until you notice it's difficult to see over your car at the oncoming traffic.
- Cars can only be used in the racing discipline for which you buy them (Drift cars are only usable in Drift events, for example.)
I could want to use by Race-type NSX for a drag race, but I'd have to spit out the 100,000 credits to buy a Drag-type one then spend around 20 minutes of farming to get it to the right level. Surely there should be a 'remodding' or transformation mechanic to switch the type of previously bought vehicles in the garage?
- Minor issues with the driving experience.
Cars drive almost comically different depending on their role. Race-types have steering tuned too 'tight', and this is taken further with Drag-types. In races, the reset after crash mechanic is inconsistent and buggy, once resetting me facing a wall.
- When the writing fails, it fails hard.
The acting is generally weak. Tyler, Lina, the racing league bosses, and, often, Jess are acted horribly, though it might be more accurate to blame the script. In particularly, the sketch to introduce Mac in the prologue criticises a 'cringy' drifting streamer called "HashTiger" physically hurt to play.
Upgrading under-levelled vehicles is a chore, waiting for upgrade shops to restock and farming old events for 'Speed Cards', but the game is very liberal with resources, never pushing you to pay a penny for a microtransaction (considering they only buy you boxes containing money, vanity items and cards to 'roll' for more Speed Cards). I'll be the first person to crusade against microtransactions but this is light years away from how egregious Battlefront II or Shadow of War are.
The open world is large and contains a large desert, a Las Vegas inspired city, a mountain/forest, and some canyons. There are no cops in free roam which can be considered a good thing if you don't like to be bothered, but for most people its disappointing and makes the world less interesting. You can still get into pursuits, although they have been limited to random locations around the world and missions.
Worst racing game progression system ever. Worst NFS ever, despite of good handling and graphics. In the current state game should be named NFS: Refund. … Expand.
Need For Speed Review.
GameSpot Need for Speed Reviews PS4 and XONE.
Straight from the underground.
by Scott Butterworth on November 2, 2015.
The Need For Speed series has always been something of a chameleon. At various points, it's been a police chase simulator, a realistic track racer, and even a Cannonball Run-style action movie on wheels. This latest Need For Speed follows in the footsteps of the first Fast and Furious film by exploring the white-knuckled world of illegal street racing. While it's not a completely novel approach for the series (Underground covered tuner car culture over a decade ago), it does open a few new avenues for Need For Speed's arcadey but nuanced style of racing--most notably in its progression and customization systems.
At one point during my playthrough, however, I hit a wall. Metaphorically. I'd been building my stock Subaru into an unstoppable tuner beast for nearly 15 hours at that point, but for whatever reason, I just could not get past the most recently unlocked story missions. I tried and retried until I finally decided to grind through smaller side events to earn some "rep" and cash. This extra currency, I hoped, might let me upgrade my way to victory. I did eventually conquer those missions, and in the process I learned two extremely valuable lessons: Using a single "balanced" ride for both drift and race events is a terrible idea at higher levels, and despite all of the frustrating nonsense Need For Speed put me through, I was always excited to dive back in.
Need For Speed doesn't offer manual shifting or any of Rivals' weaponry, but it does have a button devoted to killing your engine while you hide from the cops.
The game is far from perfect, but it is, at points, truly exceptional. Its jaw-dropping visuals, adrenaline-pumping audio, and highly-customizable handling make screaming around the darkened streets of Ventura Bay an intense thrill. The sense of ownership that comes with tuning a single ride to perfection rather than simply grabbing the flashiest vehicle available proved tremendously rewarding. Even just the breathtaking speed of upgraded vehicles makes the driving in Need For Speed absolutely gripping. This foundation of gratifying gameplay anchors the experience, while the rest of Need For Speed's specifics run the gamut from equally outstanding to smash-your-controller frustrating.
Take the goofy yet oddly endearing narrative: the live action cutscenes contain hit after hit of stilted acting, awkward dialogue, and unwarranted fistbumps without advancing anything resembling a plot. Weirdly, none of these scenes actually take place in cars, and for some reason, every single one starts with someone arriving and ends with someone else leaving, with maybe 30 seconds of conversation in between. And yet somehow, this crew of misfit racers actually grew on me. By the end, I'd wholeheartedly embraced their warm, friendly corniness, even though I still had no idea what the story was about. The presence of a villain or rival might have increased my investment, but at least you can skip any scene that starts to drag.
The sense of ownership that comes with tuning a single ride to perfection rather than simply grabbing the flashiest vehicle available proved tremendously rewarding.
The game world presents its own issues but also holds up to scrutiny. Need For Speed is set in a completely open world modeled primarily after Los Angeles, with four main boroughs and several more subsections ranging from hilly switchbacks to tangled highways to tight urban corridors. It's populated with event markers you can tackle in any order, giving the campaign a casual setup the belies the intensity of its challenges. I somehow found myself in a few of the same areas over and over again, but the level of detail, variety, and overall believability made the city an immersive high-speed playground, even with its perpetually rain-slick streets and suspiciously sparse traffic.
Aside from those semi-rare civilian vehicles and the occasional squad car--which are still a joy to outrun, by the way--Need For Speed's roster of vehicles includes the usual mix of Lamborghinis, Porsches, and Ferraris. But remember, this is a game about street racing. While you can eventually buy the really high-end stuff, you'll spend most of the campaign gradually unlocking better components and aesthetic upgrades for your less exotic tuner-mobile.
Visually, your options are robust: change the color, design a livery, add aftermarket spoilers--if you can picture it, you can usually create it, which makes standing out online fun and easy. Components like engine blocks and suspension systems, on the other hand, are slightly less impressive. Generally, the more expensive the part, the better your car will run. So if you want to upgrade your ignition, for example, you basically select that menu option and scroll right until you find a part you've both unlocked and can afford. There's really no strategy to it, which makes the whole process feel rote.
You will get phone calls about events. Lots and lots of phone calls.
Fortunately, buying these components also grants you increasingly granular control over your car's handling. You'll eventually open up 16 different sliders that control everything from tire pressure to shock stiffness, and believe it or not, I could actually feel the impact of every adjustment. It's an impressive system. You can choose to avoid the potential tedium of ticking sliders back and forth by simply adjusting a master slider between "Drift" and "Grip," which gives a less precise by still serviceable setup. For me, though, fine-tuning my ride's handling became a kind of game-consuming obsession, one with very tangible rewards.
However, this obsession eventually got me into trouble. Need For Speed features a wide variety of events, including point-based drift competitions, traditional circuit races, and even Gymkhana events. This mix created some welcome gameplay variety, but it also led to that wall I eventually smashed into. Early on, my limited resources forced me to pour all of my efforts into a single vehicle. By the time I got to later, more challenging missions, it didn't even occur to me that my well-rounded ride was actually a liability, and the game provided no feedback to indicate that a more drift-tuned car would immediately resolve my problems. An option to save multiple tuning profiles for a single car would have not only proven useful, it might have tipped me off that, hey, maybe you need to loosen up that back end if you want to win.
You can't restart an event while the cops are after you, which can get really annoying. Good thing outrunning them is fun.
That solution sounds super obvious in retrospect, but other points of frustration were a bit more inescapable. For example, Need For Speed uses obvious rubber-banding to keep opponents within striking distance during races. Having your competitors nipping at your heels creates tension, sure, but allowing the AI to automatically catch the player cheapens the upgrade system and can lead to undeserved losses.
The game's unhelpful navigation system puts you at a further disadvantage. During race events, blue arrows appear on the ground to guide you from checkpoint to checkpoint because, unlike an actual racetrack, the course will never be obvious. Unfortunately, this usually means you receive no warning before reaching a turn unless you're constantly diverting your eyes down to the mini-map. And even then, it's always night in Need For Speed, which makes certain obstacles like barriers and guardrails more difficult to spot. I had to restart plenty of races because I missed a turn, didn't turn sharply enough, or collided with an object I never saw. I would have loved an overview of each course before I started race events, but sadly, that's not an option.
Finally, the drifting point system is needlessly punishing. If you hit an obstacle at the end of a drift, you instantly lose any point you might have received for that drift. As a result, pulling pointless 180s in the middle of the street will net you more points than a perfectly executed drift that ends with your rear bumper lovetapping a guardrail. It's infuriating. I understand that powersliding into a wall shouldn't be worth any points, but surely there's a happy medium here somewhere.
If you persevere, you'll be left with a garage full of tricked out cars and a world populated by friends to race with and leaderboards to top.
Thankfully, if you persevere, you'll be left with a garage full of tricked out cars and a world populated by friends to race with and leaderboards to top. You can easily set up a crew of up to eight racers--which allows you to enter events together and otherwise just hang out in your shared city--or you can simply drive around Ventura Bay until you come across another player, at which point you can challenge each other to one of several ad hoc event types. It's not exactly dedicated multiplayer, but it will allow you to race with your friends just fine. You can also opt for asynchronous gameplay, choosing specially marked events your friend's have completed so you can best their times and earn a little extra cash.
I did notice a small but forgivable handful of frame rate drops during my playtime on the PS4, and the game's always-online setup meant I could never truly pause the game. If you ever need to quickly pause the action to, say, answer your phone or stop your cat from destroying your furniture, you simply can't unless you're willing to lose whatever event you're playing. I was also disconnected from EA's servers anytime I was away from the game for even a brief period, which led to the unnecessary hassle of reconnecting just to continue playing by myself. Still, none of that--including the unfortunate difficulty spike I experienced--was enough to ruin Need For Speed's stunning world, rewarding progression system, and exhilarating driving mechanics. Your move, Vin Diesel.
Update 11/04/2015: Unfortunately, the Xbox One version of Need For Speed contains a glut of minor yet persistent technical problems that aren’t nearly as noticeable or, in some cases, simply don’t exist on PS4. On the day of the game’s release, for example, I was randomly disconnected from EA’s servers six times in under 90 minutes of play. Not only did this abruptly interrupt my experience, I also had to reconnect to the network, find new players, and reload the game itself each and every time. In other words, simply trying to play the game became an annoying and uncertain endeavor.
While I didn’t suffer any random disconnects following my first day with the Xbox version, I continued to experience consistent and relatively frequent frame rate hiccups that caused the entire game to stutter for a split-second. I also noticed longer load times entering and exiting events, lower resolution textures throughout the world, and even problems with the drift scoring system not triggering or continuing to increase my score long after I’d finished cornering. In short, the Xbox One version lacks the technical polish of Need For Speed on PS4, and at its worst, the game actually functions less reliably.
Need for Speed Review.
After a year off, Need for Speed has the series coasting back over familiar turf, resurrecting the spirit of 2003 and 2004’s successful Underground games. It is, at least, a more clearly distinct game than the last few NFS instalments were from one another. It looks incredible, sounds fantastic, and while the handling is still standard arcade fare developer Ghost Games has added a welcome dose of nuance by letting us tune our cars for either grip or drift. However, the single-player component is over too soon, the multiplayer underdelivers, the cut-scene dialogue often had me wincing, and the game is stung by the side-effects of being online-only.
It is immediately extremely pretty, though. There are dark and gritty instances where it feels a little like the whole thing has been shot on Michael Mann’s iPhone, but racing at speed through the soaked streets here (particularly in bumper cam) is really something else. The cars glisten with beaded water droplets and the streets gleam, a shiny tapestry of mirror-like asphalt reflecting artificial light from all angles. Need for Speed also sounds nearly as good as it looks; the throaty burble of performance-tuned engines is well-realised and the crackle of exhaust overrun and the ker-chunk of slamming gears is similarly respectable. However, the sudden, jarring transitions from the dead of night, to pre-dawn, and then back to night again are horribly ill-conceived. These transitions seem to be baked into parts of the environment so they can actually happen multiple times over the course of a single race .
The cars glisten with beaded water droplets and the streets gleam, a shiny tapestry of mirror-like asphalt.
The eclectic roster of cars is only a fraction of what’s on offer in, say, Forza Horizon 2, but it has a little something for most gearheads. Garage spots are limited to five but the focus here isn’t collecting; it’s perfecting. I completed most of Need for Speed in a single car, constantly cramming upgrades into it to keep it ahead of the competition.
Performance customisation is the basic kind (bolt in everything you’re eligible to purchase and your car will go faster) but there’s a little more to visual customisation. You can sweep around your car, swap external panels, add flair to fenders, install canards, adjust stance, and more. There’s also a freeform livery editor, which definitely beats having to make do with simple, pre-set designs and wraps. You can’t modify everything, though; after I completed the story mode I splurged on a classic Ferrari F40 but was disappointed to discover I could barely do anything to it. I couldn’t even change the rims. It seems at odds with the game’s philosophy.
It’s still good to have customisation of any sort back in Need for Speed, and with it comes several basic tuning options you can use to alter your car’s driving characteristics. The main slider adjusts all settings, nudging your car towards a drift setup or a grip setup, but you can dive deeper and massage certain steering, tyre pressure, and braking power settings individually to fine tune your ride. I much preferred the drift setup for all race types because I found it far easier to get around corners by poising my Focus in a slide via a bootful of throttle and liberal use of opposite lock, rather than navigate the bends with a grip tune. The latter feels too twitchy at low speeds and too prone to understeer at higher ones, and I found myself getting frustrated trying to find the balance. Odd is the fact that, while Need for Speed has brought back tuning in a big way, the option for a manual transmission hasn’t made an appearance.
Need for Speed’s light narrative plays out in a series of short, live-action cut-scenes, brimming with slang I don’t understand, excessive energy drink consumption, overuse of the word “hashtag”, and a slightly comical amount of first-person fist-bumping.
There are five main characters who, when they aren’t speaking to each other like living, breathing internet memes, each represent a different one of Need for Speed’s five themed racing threads. All of these threads lead to an encounter with a real-life automotive icon; an idea which I genuinely like.
The lack of any drag racing in Need for Speed seems like a misguided omission.
The best thread is ‘Outlaw’, which is really just a mix of all the game’s race types with the cops on your tail. The cop action is scaled back from Hot Pursuit and Rivals but I certainly appreciate how the police AI seems a lot more fair and bound by the in-game physics than it ever did in Ubisoft’s The Crew. Considering it was the standout mode in the old Underground games, the lack of any drag racing in Need for Speed seems like a misguided omission.
It’s not an especially long story, though. There are 79 main events, but I blasted through them in just two days. The often shameless rubber band AI screwed me out of a few wins here and there but, for the most part, there were only a handful of races I needed to repeat. This modest length might be less of a problem if the multiplayer was more robust, but it isn’t.
Like The Crew, Need for Speed requires a constant internet connection to play – even if you want to play solo. Unlike The Crew, you can’t just simply opt into multiplayer and rely on the game to take care of matchmaking and enlist you into a series of events. This really didn’t need to be an always online game, and because it is, you can’t even pause the game, which I found extraordinarily annoying. Plus, without decent PvP, the only thing left after the brief campaign is hunting down Need for Speed’s frankly boring collectables. Exactly why are we collecting photographs of plain, dimly-lit parking lots and anonymous warehouses?
Need for Speed looks the part, sounds the part, and is surprisingly reverent to real-world car culture. I like the direction Ghost has taken here, and I think it’s the right one, but beneath its flashy exterior it's not quite firing on all cylinders.
Need for Speed looks and sounds great, but beneath its flashy exterior it’s not quite firing on all cylinders.
Great visuals and sound Drifting feels satisfying Story is brief, multiplayer underdelivers Rubber band AI, daft time-of-night effects No drag racing, and no pause button!
