Overwatch Review.
Overwatch exists at an intersection between design and artistry, a crossroad at which pure tactile joy meets refined, intelligent design to create a rare spark of magic. As a 6v6 multiplayer, objective-based shooter, it finds accessibility not by lowering the skill ceiling, but by broadening the definition of skill. The person with deadshot aim is no more valuable than the person with the decision-making ability to know when a well-timed ability will turn an engagement, or the person with the map-sense to find the optimal locations to place sentry turrets. While it didn't exactly drown me in options, maps, and modes, it’s blessed with a multitude of tactical layers, and none of them ever came between me and my enjoyment of its intense, swirling teamfights, and thrilling overtime comebacks.
Update: Overwatch is IGN's 2016 Game of the Year.
Overwatch does a great many things well, but above all else, its success is built on the backs of its many excellent characters. It’s fitting that the main menu is dominated by one of them at all times; their diverse appearances, origins, and personalities are all laid bare with every pose they strike. Reinhardt’s rocket hammer lands on his shoulder with a meaty clank that invokes a broadsword resting against a medieval knight’s plate armor, and Tracer’s jovial smile is just briefly interrupted by a rebellious bang that slides across her face, tempting her to blow it back into place before re-addressing the camera and blinking all over the place. There’s an intelligent gorilla scientist, a lithe, blue-skinned assassin, and a cybernetic, zen-practicing healer too. It speaks volumes that the one character that adheres to well-worn shooter tropes feels like the odd man out here. They’re all so different that you’d imagine them looking silly standing next to one another, but through careful, subtle visual cues baked into their equipment and attire, they manage to appear as if they share a common world, even if they all hail from different corners of it.
It speaks volumes that the one character that adheres to well-worn shooter tropes feels like the odd man out here.
This diversity continues to bear out when you pick a hero and hit the battlefield with them. Though the 21 characters (all of whom are unlocked from the start) are roughly grouped into one of four “roles,” no two feel alike. The robotic, transforming Bastion and the anarchic, explosive-tossing Junkrat are both technically Defenders, but they couldn’t play any more differently from one another. The former looks for a cozy spot overlooking a key choke point and transforms into a minigun turret to run point defense; the latter plays an area-denial game by lobbing timed grenades over long distances, which then sit on the ground blinking angrily, as if to say “go somewhere else” to encroaching enemies before exploding. This strong sense of differentiation is important because it keeps team composition strategies from devolving into simple formulas. No, two Tanks, two Supports, and two Attackers is not the magic solution for a winning team. You have to look much deeper – and when you do, the true beauty of Overwatch’s gameplay shines through.
One of the surprising keys to surfacing these nuances is its refusal to offer up crutches to lean on. With very few arguable exceptions, no character is focused solely around one catch-all gun or skill to the extent that you can find success by using it alone. Tracer’s dual machine-pistols have a high rate of fire but poor accuracy, a short clip, and middling damage if you aren’t scoring headshots. Genji’s shurikens are highly damaging and boast unerring accuracy, but their slow rate of fire and long travel time can make hitting a small moving target difficult. Almost every primary weapon fits this mold: they’re useful, and in the right situation quite powerful, but never versatile enough to be a security blanket to constantly cling to. Not only do these little details help differentiate characters, they pushed me to explore their other abilities in search of success.
You have to look much deeper – and when you do, the true beauty of Overwatch’s gameplay shines through.
And once I started looking more closely, I couldn’t stop discovering new things. Revisiting Junkrat’s toolset, he doesn’t have a single standard, reliable gun to just directly engage an enemy in front of him. Sure, he could skip grenades along the ground, leading his target as best he can, but even if you were good enough to reliably win one-on-one firefights this way, you wouldn’t be realizing his full potential.
At face value his other two skills – Steel Trap and Concussion Mine – seem straightforward. One immobilizes enemies that wander into it, the other blows them sky-high when triggered. In practice though, they can be so much more. Steel Trap can be an escape tool, allowing you to disengage from fights with faster enemies trying to get in your face. Its positional alert upon being triggered allows it to double as an early warning system too, letting you know that someone on the other team is attempting to flank your defenses and holding them there long enough for you to respond. Or, plant a Concussion Mine on top of a Steel Trap and just detonate it when you see it triggered while you’re off somewhere else peppering the objective with grenades. You can even use Concussion Mine as a regular old grenade by tossing it at a group of enemies and detonating it manually as it gets there. Perhaps most amusingly, you can detonate it under yourself to rocket-jump up to otherwise-inaccessible areas. Just two abilities on one character opens up all those possibilities, and as you might imagine, once you get 12 characters scrapping over objectives, using their abilities to help and hurt one another, further layers of tactical nuance begin to unfurl.
For example: On her own, Pharah can be a major headache by hurling herself high into the air and hovering there while raining rocket-propelled death down on opposing teams from angles that render both cover and positioning moot. But with Mercy the winged medic tending to her, Pharah becomes a whole different kind of problem. Mercy’s Guardian Angel ability allows her to swoop toward any ally in range, even ones up in the sky. Combined with her ability to slow her descent with her wings, she's the only character that can follow Pharah wherever she goes. So you end up with a dynamic duo flying all over the place – the one shoving rockets down people's throats while the other switches between healing her up and buffing her already substantial damage output as needed.
The sum of all these minute details is that almost every action, even the ones you repeat again and again, feel just a little bit magical.
Overwatch is rich with synergies like this: Reinhardt and Lucio, Zarya and Reaper, Torbjorn and Symmetra…there's no shortage of opportunities for keen, coordinated play, and when you reach a point where you feel comfortable switching your character on the fly in the middle of a match to capitalize on weak enemy team composition, you feel like a tactical genius.
You could spend many hours playing Overwatch before getting to that point by properly wrapping your brain around all the little intricacies it has tucked away behind its approachable veneer, but you certainly don't need to just to have a good time with it. Just trying out different characters, popping off their abilities, and moving through their world feels almost indescribably right, and it's all because of tiny, almost imperceptible details . The lid on Junkrat's grenade launcher flaps and clanks about with his every move, Lucio's movement has just the slightest touch of inertia, so you actually feel like you're skating when you play him. Zenyatta's reload animation might be my favorite; I never got tired of watching him open his arms to materialize a new set of orbs before clasping them together with a satisfying, metallic thud. It's a small thing, sure, but the sum of these minute details is that almost every action, even the ones you repeat again and again, feel just a little bit magical.
Overwatch’s 12 maps are similarly flush with luxuriant details, and they also play a big role in extracting further depth out of the cast’s toolsets. The oppressive first chokepoint on Hanamura begs to have static defenses like Torbjorn’s turret or Symmetra’s sentries built around it, and for attackers with the right mobility skills (see Pharah and Mercy above) the long gap between the left side of the first and second capture point becomes a tantalizing opportunity to flank the defenders before they can reset themselves. Payload-escort maps like Route 66 provide high ground on either side of the attackers route, setting up paranoia-inducing ambush scenarios where Winston’s spherical Shell Barrier becomes invaluable for protection against threats that could be coming from several angles at once. This adds another interesting layer of strategizing and decision making when coming up with team compositions. You aren’t just thinking about how your character will work in the context of your team, but also about what opportunities any given map provides, and how you can exploit them.
You’re always in the fight, never wondering where it is or how to get there.
Every map is directly tied to a specific objective type, so their construction is well-tailored to the action at hand. You never get that disjointed feeling of playing capture the flag on a team deathmatch map, like you might in other multiplayer shooters where maps have to accommodate a variety of modes. The upsides are subtle, but significant. Maps are focused without ever feeling constricted; there’s never any question about where you’re headed or how to get there, because every flanking path and side door eventually puts you where you need to be. In this way, Overwatch’s map designs allow you to choose your vector of engagement without risking you getting lost where the action isn’t happening. The result is zero wasted time; you’re always in the fight, never wondering where it is or how to get there.
Tying modes to maps in this one-to-one fashion has a small downside too though: Overwatch doesn’t have a ton of different modes to switch things up like most other games of its kind do. This isn’t Halo where most maps support various team sizes, objectives, and a slew of different modified rules. There’s only one way to play on Volskaya Industries: it will always be attack the first point, then attack the second. This lack of customization allows for finely tuned action, but also cuts into the overall breadth and variety of the experience when compared to other modern multiplayer games.
Overwatch takes just about every possible opportunity to make its cast and locales seem like people and places rather than puppets and scenery.
But like its characters, Overwatch’s maps are filled with nuances that will take time and repetition to learn, and not just from a mechanical standpoint. Bits of story and world-building can be found throughout the beautifully conceived environments. Movie posters in the spawn room of one map reveal that the mech-piloting pro-gamer D.Va’s real name is Hana Song, and that she had a movie career as well. Another map has a row of arcade machines, and if you happen to be playing as Genji, the cyber-ninja might start reminiscing about how many hours of his “misspent youth” he burned away playing there. Sometimes characters who have a past and don’t like each other find themselves on the same team, and you’ll hear about it. Overwatch takes just about every possible opportunity to make its cast and locales seem like people and places rather than puppets and scenery.
In terms of features, Overwatch is just a bit thin, but it meets most of the basic expectations of a multiplayer shooter and in some ways, exceeds them. Its impressive stat-tracking, per-character control mapping, and accessibility options stand out. It also does a great job of identifying and surfacing good play to teammates and opponents through a novel commendation system and a sweet “Play of the Game” highlight reel. Matchmaking is swift and reliable, and the cosmetic unlockables are surprisingly charming and come at a pretty decent pace without paying for extra loot packs. That said, I dug the characters' stock designs so much, I didn't want to stray too far from them anyway.
Overwatch is an incredible achievement in multiplayer shooter design. It bobs and weaves almost perfectly between being the quick-fix adrenaline hit you might want after a long day of work, and the thoughtful, strategic multiplayer experience that becomes the center of evening-long binges with friends. It might not have the most exhaustive list of maps and modes, but it provides nearly endless opportunities for exhilarating, coordinated play, and when you’re the one at the center of it, it feels like nothing else.
Slick, gorgeous, and flush with tactical depth, Overwatch is the new gold standard for multiplayer shooters.
Bursting with character Versatile skills Excellent map design Tactical depth Sparse modes.

Overwatch: Origins Edition confirmed for Xbox One.
Blizzard have been around a little while. They should know where the gaming Gods look favourably, with such titles behind them as the Warcraft, Diablo, Hearthstone and Starcraft series. Blizzard aren’t short of experience. They announced at Blizzcon 2014, a team-based PC shooter by the name of Overwatch and all was well in the world.
Long deprived of Blizzard’s wares, the console market, from my point of view, has had the hump with their lack of wargaming from arguably the market-leader in the field. This should be coming to an end around summer next year. Overwatch: Origins Edition has been confirmed for an Xbox One release, “on or before the 21st of June 2016”.
A GAME listing here in the UK, captured by Overpwn, revealed the following information about the title:
21 Heroes 5 Skins Blackwatch Reyes (Reaper) Strike-Commander Morrison (Soldier: 76) Overgrown Bastion Security Chief Pharah Slipstream Tracer.
There’s no news yet on how much Overwatch: Origins Edition will cost you lucky, lucky people, nor if it will be free to play, like it’s PC counterpart.
The picture at the top of this post was spotted on a Blizzard splash page, before some spoilsport whipped it away. With BlizzCon 2015 happening this weekend, we’re sure to get some further information come through, and we’ll endeavour to bring it to you.
Still unsure? Have a look at one of the original gameplay trailers, below, to give you an idea of what this is all about.
Overwatch: Origins Edition should be hitting the Xbox One in Spring/Summer 2016.

Overwatch: Origins Edition Review.
A gorilla scientist, a shotgun wielding Grim Reaper, a cybernetic ninja, an angel, a dwarf mechanic and the world’s most hated transforming turret walk into the Temple of Osiris. As squads go, that’s a pretty good one to aspire towards… Now, seeing a team like that in any other game might cause you to channel your inner Monty Python and say “Stop that now! It’s silly!” Overwatch , however, says that’s just a normal Tuesday afternoon.
Overwatch is a first person MOBA that sees you and a team of freaks with unique traits and abilities face off against other teams of freaks for supremacy/bragging rights. A more casual MOBA than games such as SMITE or League of Legends, Overwatch doesn’t demand you to deal with minions, or buff camps.
It does, however, ask you to learn how to play each individual character, as no two characters play the same. Thankfully though, with 20+ heroes to choose from, ranging from warhammer wielding shield knights to rocket launcher toting Egyptians, the range on offer here is awesome, and it’s a guarantee that you’ll find your favourites (Hanzo for life though). The point is finding a character that suits your playstyle, with categories including Sniper, Tank, Support, Builder, Attacker and Defender.
Reaper, for instance, is a close range attacker and DPS monster designed to destroy any potential lone rangers. The close corridors of maps like Greece make him the perfect “hit and run” ambush character. Jump in, shotgun, warp out, repeat. However, he also has a teleport which can be used to close distance or get to high ground, making him especially effective at pressuring snipers. Just warp to your assailants roof and devastate them.
This type of strategising is pretty typical given the maps on offer here, as they themselves support a range of gameplay styles, with both flanking opportunities and verticality allowing for attacks from all angles. Character combinations like Mei and Bastion can be used to funnel opponents into specific killzones, especially effective when defending on a map like King’s Row. A great Bastion player can lock down the first objective, making it almost impossible for an uncoordinated team to break through.
This is what separates Overwatch from the pack, as it isn’t a case of fastest trigger finger first; more “fastest thinker first”. The team that can come up with a better counter strategy to the opposing team will more often than not become the victor. Sure, Bastion or Torbjörn’s turret might be powerful, but Widowmaker could easily snipe them from distance, negating their advantage.
A great Tracer could run circles around Bastion, or if you prefer the brute force method, try Reinhardt and his shield, flanked by Soldier 76 and McCree. Perhaps even a Roadhog to grab him and pull him away from his allies. It’s all about changing your strategy to match the field of battle.
It’s this level of thinking that makes Overwatch so rewarding to play, and leads to a number of highlights that make you feel like the best player in the world. When an effective flank with Reaper pays off and you decimate their entire team, or when you use Hanzo’s Dragonstrike Ultimate Attack to wipe out anything surrounding the objective, or when you hold off an attacking team with McCree’s Deadeye ability, or when you push through a defensive line as Reinhardt, or even when you manage to stave off an enemy attack from the brink of defeat; all of these moments and more are what make Overwatch so damn fun.
Overwatch even offers up a “Play of the Game” once the violence has finished, showing the feats of awesomeness players were able to accomplish, and there’s no further validation than being that highlight. It helps make Overwatch a great “watercooler” type of game, as anyone who plays it is able to come away with some kind of story about how they were triumphant.
That being said, Overwatch isn’t without its downfalls, and no, it’s not about balancing. As a team game, Overwatch requires you to both work together with your teammates and utilise different abilities; the keyword in the sentence being different. It boggles the mind that a team is allowed to pick the same character more than once, seemingly without limit. One particular game finished up with 4 different players on one team playing as D.Va, and losing.
Sure, Overwatch has a tips section on the character selection screen, letting players know that they might need a Sniper or a Tank, or that there are too many Support characters, but there’s literally nothing to stop a team from picking six Hanzo’s and firing enough arrows to blot out the Sun.
Plus, the lack of a single player story could be considered a drawback, no matter how fun the multiplayer is. Anyone who’s seen the animated trailers, including Widowmaker, Genji and Hanzo, Winston and Soldier: 76 will know there’s a whole world of human vs robot backstory to explore. Blizzard could have even used it as an advanced tutorial to get players up to speed with the mechanics of each character.
Still, there’s so much to love about Overwatch. From the characters and the multitude of different play styles on offer, to the emphasis on teamplay for a shooter in a time when lone wolf multiplayer shooters are in abundance; as a multiplayer game it ticks all the right boxes. There might be a couple of characters in need of some nerfs, some in need of some buffs, but that’s just a natural part of the multiplayer gaming process. The core game itself is there, and it’s ready for you and your friends to enjoy.

One of the most engaging and well-designed multiplayer romps of this generation.
Overall - 9/10.
People might gripe over the balancing of some characters, or the lack of single player content, but the fact remains that Overwatch: Origins Edition is a well-rounded, engaging and rewarding multiplayer experience. Get the squad together, you don't want to miss out on this.

Overwatch XBox One Review (Origins Edition)
Summary: Overwatch on XBox One is a very unique and entertaining shooter that is like being transported into a Pixar movie!
I need a hero!
The highly anticipated team-based first person shooter Overwatch from Blizzard Entertainment is finally here that is beautifully presented on the XBox One with some detailed world-building and amazing graphics to complement the gameplay plus some MOBA features thrown in for good measure. This is not your dad’s first person shooter because how different the characters are, their abilities and the world that you play in. It’s quite a clever twist on what you know actually.
The story of Overwatch is set the distant future where the world has been split due to artificial intelligence and a robot uprising, so when things go haywire, it’s time for a group of heroes to be born that is told through some great use of CGI cinematics. Also and just like the classic Bonnie Tyler song ‘I Need a Hero’, this is what the shooter genre needed and Blizzard really delivered because it’s definitely not like your mainstream Call of Duty’s or Battlefields that are dark and dreary! On the contrary, things are a lot more brighter!

The game world of Overwatch is quite varied and level design is well-thought out and detailed. More importantly, the 12 maps that you visit showcases this futuristic world well and I love the different locations such as the almost Blade Runner like Japan or futuristic Africa which adds to the overall strategy. Needless to say, the environments definitely add to the longevity of this title as they are so different in nature with lots of places to explore and hide. Character design is another highlight as each character looks completely dissimilar and it’s not all men carrying guns!
The gameplay of Overwatch supports three modes that include assault, control and escort with 12 maps to play. Each map has lots of ‘secrets’ and do need to be played over and over again in order to explore, memorise and know your surrounds to get the upper hand. Furthermore, assault has one team attempting to capture certain places on the map with the other team defending them. Escort requires one team to protect a payload and safely move it to their intended destination while the other team attempts to prevent them. Lastly is control that requires each team to control a very part of the map and was probably my favourite mode because of how chaotic if was.
There are also 21 characters included in the roster of Overwatch with each character having their pros and cons, so finding a favourite will definitely be a challenge but it does use traditional archetypes (offense, defence, tank and support) plus customisations options. For example there’s the duel-wielding Tracer who has the ability to ‘time travel’ and ‘blink’ that is quite strategic on the battlefield but she is not the most powerful character in the game.
If you want someone with power, that would be Winston the Gorilla who dishes out massive damage and to multiple targets. He also has a special ability called ‘primal rage’ which amplifies his melee attacks, not to mention jumps but of course, when it comes to speed, that would be another character. So part of the charm of Overwatch are the characters because of how diverse they are!
Also, Overwatch has a good matchmaking system but best of all, the gameplay and combat is accessible to all gamers, whether hardcore fans of first person shooters or those wanting to dabble, it’s definitely a fair system. More importantly, the gameplay feels VERY sturdy and fluid on the XBox One with good controls that merge well with the in-game mechanics.
Furthermore, teamwork plays a huge part of this game so you do need to ensure that your team is well-balanced in order to give you a decent chance at winning. This means you need to protect your weaker members such as support and defence that can be a challenge in this 6v6 title. Weapons and equipment are equally as diverse as the characters and whether that’s shurikens, mines or guns, everything has a place. You can even do rocket-jumps if that’s your style as well and that’s another shining light of Overwatch because it caters for numerous strategies in this addictive shooter.
Graphically, Overwatch does feel like a Blizzard game but that’s a good thing because it has its own stylised graphics which looks great on the Xbox One . Characters are well detailed and have this cartoon aura (think Big Hero 6 ) to them and the environments are nicely detailed, including all the special effects and lighting. As mentioned, Overwatch is a colourful and bright game that just jumps out at you. Audio is equally as good from great voice acting and truly thumping sound effects.
At times Overwatch does feel like an old school multiplayer shooter but Blizzard has a knack of taking something classic and making it better. The gameplay is fun, the characters are diverse and really make you think, especially when their your enemy! Apart from more realistic first person shooter, this multiplayer game is filled with colour and looks like something out of Pixar which definitely makes the game more fresh, not to mention the clever gaming mechanics. So whether you own an XBox One, PS4 or PC , Overwatch is a game for everyone and on that note, I’m going back to play this awesome line shooter!
