Path of Exile is coming to Xbox One! Here's what you need to know. Path of Exile is best described as a Diablo-like isometric RPG, but the similarities are superficial. It's already available for PC, and it's hugely popular there. In reality, Path of Exile offers players far more freedom to customize their characters and skills, and it's set in a large online world brimming with quests, loot, and gothic, eldritch horrors. Oh, and it's free — but not in the pay-to-win sense of the word. Path of Exile is funded 100 percent by purely cosmetic, non-gameplay-affecting DLC. It's a rare gem indeed. We went hands-on with the Xbox One version of Path of Exile at GDC 2017. Here's what Xbox players can expect. Developed by Grinding Gear Games, Path of Exile seemed to appear out of nowhere in 2013. The game launched against a backdrop of criticism for Diablo III's real-money auction house, and its apparent shift in tone to something a little brighter. Blizzard itself parodied the "uproar," with a hidden level filled with ponies and rainbows. Either way, Path of Exile felt like it came around at the right time. The game is uncompromisingly dark and brutal, set in a macabre world teeming with all manner of demonic entities and twisted beasts. Path of Exile also sports (optional) competitive player-versus-player combat, a persistent online world, and some of the deepest character customization the genre has seen. Customization. Path of Exile's skill gem system is perhaps most easily compared to Final Fantasy 7's "Materia." Unlike other action RPGs, you can pick and choose from literally any of the hundreds of skills in Path of Exile, as abilities come in the form of colored gems. Say, for instance, you socket a fire skill into your gear; you can then customize that fire skill multiple times over, choosing up to five modifying support gems. Perhaps you want your fire spell to deal damage in a cone, split into multiple projectiles or chain from enemy to enemy — all of those combinations are available, and much more, powering an utterly bewildering assortment of character options. Beyond active skills, you can build your character in a more permanent way using Path of Exile's gargantuan skill tree. Once again, this system appears to have, at least in part, been inspired by Final Fantasy, notably FFX's Sphere Grid. When you craft a new character, you can choose from one of six archetypes: Duelist, Shadow, Marauder, Witch, Ranger, and a Templar. Each of these has further Ascendency classes which allow you to customize even further, and you can unlock a Scion class eventually, as well. Depending on your class choice, you will start at a preordained position on the Path of Exile skill tree, which contains a certifiably-insane 1,325 passive upgrades. Every level up and certain quests grant an extra point to spend in the passive tree, which allows you to customize your playstyle. Naturally, you won't get enough points to buy every skill, so focusing on specifics is best. Imagine a Necromancer who also wields lightning, or a Witch who focuses on fast-casting fire spells. In addition to mundane passives such as increased magic damage, there are also more notable Keystone skills that grant benefits in exchange for tradeoffs. Necromantic Aegis, for example, grants your shield properties to your undead army, rather than yourself. If you want to check out Path of Exile's skill tree, it's available online. Loot and economy. As an always-online game, Path of Exile has a powerful in-game economy, which encourages players to scavenge and trade powerful items. Since Path of Exile's skills are also items, rare abilities might be worth more to trade than actually equip, particularly if they don't match your playstyle. The same goes for weapons, armor, and other gear that you will find in abundance throughout Path of Exile's sizeable world. Unlike most RPGs of this type, Path of Exile doesn't have a traditional "gold"-based economy. Instead, players barter consumable items. As a result, Path of Exile has no artificial money sinks and isn't plagued by real money traders (RMT) whose sole goal is to disrupt the economy by harvesting and selling in-game currency online. Path of Exile may allow you to upgrade items, identify mysterious artifacts, or grant access to an end-game area. Grinding Gear Games says some items are so rare that you might only read about them on forums. Gameplay and world. Path of Exile is set on the continent of Wraeclast, which Grinding Gear Games describes as a "dark, brutal" place. Path of Exile hopes to rekindle the magic of gloomy, realistic fantasy RPGs, ditching what is described as the "trend towards bright, cartoony RPGs." Expect corrupt, demonic dungeons, haunted mines, Lovecraftian undersea caves, and abandoned castles, full of nasties hungry for (your) blood. Superficially, Path of Exile plays similarly to Diablo, with the key difference that you will encounter other players passively while you explore its world, although PvP play is separate. Path of Exile is a permanently connected game, but you will not need an Xbox Live Gold subscription to play it solo. As you might expect, you can also squad up and explore Wraeclast too, building characters to complement each other's skills and abilities. Replayability is a key aspect of the game, where both items and areas are procedurally generated. End game content offers infinite new ways to play, with competitive leagues, a constant cycle of new expansions and other updates, funded by what Grinding Gear calls "ethical microtransactions," that provide only cosmetic bonuses (take note, devs.) Path of Exile could keep you busy for a long, long time. When will Path of Exile be available? Path of Exile is slated for a 2017 launch, more specifically towards the end of the year. Naturally, the control schemes had to be reworked for consoles, including the Xbox Live API for achievements and partying up. Xbox One players will get their own servers, separate from the PC version. Moving forward, Grinding Gear Games is aiming to synchronize updates and free expansions between PC and Xbox One. The Xbox One version of the game will launch with all previous content and updates, including the various under-the-hood fixes and graphical improvements the game has received since its launch. Path of Exile's business model allows it to be perpetually updated, and Grinding Gear Games has found a ton of success with its efforts so far. Hopefully, bringing it to Xbox One will bring expose the game to an entirely new audience, to help it grow even further. The notion that a game could actually be free to play but remain balanced for those who don't want to pony up the cash is pretty rare. With more and more developers putting gameplay-affecting micropayments in their games, it's nice to see others take a stand against the practice. We'll be on task to let you know how Path of Exile is growing in the coming months ahead, so keep it locked to Windows Central for all the latest information. Path of Exile Coming Soon to Xbox One. We’re excited to announce that Path of Exile is coming to Xbox One this year! Our game is a modern twist on the traditional isometric Action RPG (ARPG), played on a persistent online realm where players conquer foes and hunt for rare items together. As your wealth grows, you can trade your items to build the ultimate character. We started developing Path of Exile 10 years ago, as a small group of friends who met playing online ARPGs. After seven years of development, we launched Path of Exile on PC to great acclaim, winning Gamespot’s PC Game of the Year and other awards. Support from our 16 million players enabled us to expand Grinding Gear Games over the next few years to a team of over 90 people focused on expanding Path of Exile . At its core, our game is about character customization. We’ve designed it so that choices matter and experimentation pays off. Link your skill gems with support gems to drastically modify their behavior. Find powerful items that completely change the way your character works. Choose from over 1,300 passive skills spread out on the iconic skill tree and even socket jewels to modify the tree itself. Almost everything can be modified through crafting, from your items, to jewels, to chests you encounter and even the areas you play through. As game designers, we love the fact that everyone has a unique character build. With each update, we add more customization options. We feel very strongly about the business models of free-to-play games so we made sure to completely separate our monetization from gameplay — there’s no way to pay to improve the power level or wealth of your characters in Path of Exile . If you have a valuable item, everyone knows you’ve earned it. When it launches later this year, the Xbox One version will include all five major expansions in addition to the gigantic 3.0.0 expansion we’re releasing on PC later this year. To say we’re excited about this launch is an understatement. We’re proud of what our team has created, and look forward to delivering years of entertainment to Xbox One gamers.

New expansion, new gear, new platform. by Alessandro Fillari on June 18, 2017. You are now subscribed. Path of Exile has been a bit of oddity for the years it's been out on PC. As a free to play loot based action RPG, it's got a reputation for holding its own against larger titles like Diablo III, and has since built a large and dedicated following of its own. Now, they're gearing up for their largest expansion in years with The Fall of Oriath, which brings players back to where the story began, and also the launch of the upcoming Xbox One release. During the Microsoft press conference, we caught a trailer for its release on Xbox One, which marks the first time the game is playable on consoles. While on the show floor, we had some time to speak with the developers about the recent expansion, and played an early build of the Xbox version--which will feature all content from its PC older brother. For those not in the know, Path Of Exile puts players in the role of a recent exile from the city of Oriath. As one of several exiles, Path of Exile's take on classes, you'll find yourself shipwrecked on an island and must fight your way back to the city to dish out vengeance. But after your many battles, you find that destroying one of the island's most dangerous creators results in unleashing an ancient evil that plunges the city of Oriath into chaos, leading to even greater dangers for the world at large. While at our session, the developers spoke about the growth they've seen over the years and what led them to overhauling a good portion of the game for the next major update. Back in December, the developers at Grinding Gear Games saw over one million players logged in for the first time at any given time. In addition to the year over year growth in players, the developers recently released their Atlas of Worlds expansion, which also brought in higher numbers. They saw this as an opportunity to bring in their next expansion. In the Fall of Oriath update, which is the largest expansion to date, they're adding in an additional five new story acts taking players through the city and its many areas, new gear, new graphical updates and tweaks--including 4K support--an overhauled difficulty system which features more organic challenge and difficulty growth, and a brand new upgrade system called Pantheon, which allows the exiles to claim the power of the gods for themselves. In addition to the expansion, which launches next month on PC, the developers also gave us some hands on time with the console release, which they had been quietly working on for some time. Much of the UI and general control feedback had been reworked, allowing primarily for ease of use on controllers for extended periods. While some skills had to be reworked, due to the lack of precise mouse controls, the console is largely intact with its PC counterpart. I was quite impressed with how smooth and intuitive it was. Usually it's difficult translating isometric games like this to the console, but the developers did a surprisingly solid job with the port, and it feels like it can easily stand toe-to-toe with the original. Though cross play with PC players won't be possible, mostly due to gameplay changes and system infrastructure, the Xbox release will have all the same content as the PC version. With the Fall of Oriath expansion coming July, and the console launch being set for later this year--remaining free-to-play--the future of the free action/RPG is looking bright, and with a new player base coming in soon, the Path of Exile community is looking to increase even further. As you may be aware, Path of Exile is coming soon to Xbox One to make its console debut. We’re extremely excited to break into this new arena and welcome new Action RPG fans to the Path of Exile community. Also: our Xbox One beta is live right now! You can sign up at pathofexile.com/xbox and space is limited, but we’ll try to get everyone in. I founded Grinding Gear Games in 2006 with three friends. After years of playing genre classics such as Dungeon Siege , Titan Quest and the Diablo series, we dreamed of making the next big Action RPG. Over the last 11 years, we’ve scaled up from a team of four in my garage to a staff of more than 100, making us the largest game development studio in New Zealand. Our goal with Path of Exile was to create an Action RPG based on deep character customization, a strong online item economy and visceral action combat. It was also very important to us that the game is free, without micro-transactions that affect your gameplay or the power level of your character. The Xbox One launch of Path of Exile contains all our expansions, including the most recent: The Fall of Oriath . It expands Path of Exile ‘s story from four acts of content to 10, just in time for the Xbox One release. While this expansion completes our storyline (for now), we’re not done yet! Our team is passionate about the world we’ve created and the fans who join us there. We’re committed to bringing even more Path of Exile content to your living room in the coming months and years. The Path of Exile beta will run for approximately three weeks and will give us and our fans the opportunity to test the content, controls, and user interface we created for Xbox One. During the closed beta we’ll be asking for feedback based on your experience and will be making further improvements until the official launch. Path of Exile. In my opinion Path of Exile is one of the best TRULY free to play games avaliable, the microtransactions consist mainly of cosmetics, you can buy more stash tabs but imo that's only if you're gonna hoard gear because they give you enough to begin with. What makes this game so great is the replayability, I've had 3 characters on PC, 1 on the xbox beta, and now 2 on the full xbone edition, because of the immense skill tree and builds every playthrough is different. I recommend this game for both newcomers and Diablo fans. 640 out of 651 people found this helpful. This game is not p2w. Path of exile originated on pc, and has had over 7 expansions released in the past 4 years, completely free of charge. There is no xp boosts, buyable items with stats, or anything that improves you. This game can be played for thousands of hours, with no cost, kill every boss, run every build. GGG makes money via cosmetic MTX, buying those huge packs for $200 or more is simply a donation. Upon release so many players logged in it crashed the servers. Ignore the "**** BTW DIABLO CLONE", PoE has more content in 4 years for free then D3 and D2 did in almost 2 decadees. David Brevik, developer for D1 and D2 is a consultant for PoE, Kripparian a D2 legend has his own dedication in the credits. Yes there are bugs on release, like every other game. Give it a try. 324 out of 329 people found this helpful. Reviews about supporter packs are uneducated. The supporter packs offer strictly cosmetics. The game has been free to play since its conception, and the supporter packs are strictly for those who want to support Grinding Gear Games. The game can start off frustrating for people, and the difficulty increases quickly. Check out the path of exile forums for help creating a build to get you going. Amazing game, unlimited build possibilities, it's been free to play since beta on PC, and it is one of the best games I've ever played. 199 out of 202 people found this helpful. I honestly can't believe this is free! You can play this game for absolutely free and have no hold backs. I'm old as poo and have played Diablo since it came out and can honestly say it far surpasses Diablo/hack and slash gameplay by far. I'm excited that it finally came to console but even more that it has stayed to the concepts of a free to play game, even while converting to console. Also if you pay for things it's more of a tribute to the developers anys. They did a great job making this game and deserve revenue too, plus you'll get some cool imagery with special effets. 149 out of 153 people found this helpful. Welcome exile(NOT PAY TO WIN) First this game is not p2w. You can purchase cosmetics, but none of the game content is locked behind a paywall. You can do EVERY single thing in game for FREE. If you are a fan of deep customization, lots of loot, and killing mobs like a god then this game is for you! 135 out of 140 people found this helpful. The hack and slash I have been waiting for. This game has depth and feels alot like the Diablo 1&2, and some of my favorites as a kid, the Champions of Norrath 1&2. Runs smooth and plays great. Interesting story and characters (everyone you play as, is actually a bad person. You dont play the world saving hero like in most games). The customization is amazing. Micro transactions are only for clothing and pets (for a free game, who blames them). And to top it off you can play with up to 6 people (5 others). 101 out of 106 people found this helpful. Best ARPG Experience You Could Have. Looking through these reviews I'm seeing so many people that are obviously confused and misinformed. the add on packs are not in any way necessary to buy, they are NOT DLC. They are just packs to support the devs, who btw, are very respected and loved by those who have known and played this game since it came out on PC years back. the game is not pay to win by ANY means, and the support packs are just that, to help support this amazing company and game. The game has been ported AMAZINGLY to console and I am amazed at how well it plays. The game play is smooth, the graphics are beautiful, the controls are better than I thought they would be. The only real issue I have is the slightly clunky inventory. Other than that, this game is about as perfect as a modern ARPG can get. And just as it blew Diablo 3 out of the water back when it came out, it still does to this day in my opinion. Thank you, Grinding Gears. 77 out of 81 people found this helpful. YOU DONT NEED TO PAY FOR COSMETICS FYI. Some of these reviews are ridiculous "OMG $400 DLC" For one thing, its not a DLC, its just cosmetics. Fluff. Effects. You dont need to buy it, doesnt affect the game at all. Not sure what youre complaining about. Also theres other ones that are like $5, if you really want it. This is an amazing game, ive been hooked on PC for years. Its the spiritual successor to Diablo 2, and is what Diablo 3 wishes it was. Its no way at all p2w, do you even know what that means? Some of you are so clueless, its impressive. 147 out of 159 people found this helpful. A Free to Play Game With a Lot Of Content. Theres not many Free to Play games you can put 50 hours into it easily. Also theres not many Free to Play games that arent Pay to Win but this is one of them, all the microtransactions are only for cosmetic items. Free to Play done right. 38 out of 39 people found this helpful. A great port from the PC version! The game plays well, anyone familiar with the diablo series will be right at home here. Graphics and sound fx are clean though a bit dull at times. But the HUGE skill tree and the way you can diversify your character more than make up for it. Seriously this may be the largest skill tree I've ever seen. Great gameplay makes this one of the best ARPG's I've ever played. Also it's FREE! All microtransactions are purely cosmetic. I just wish picking up gear was easier. 25 out of 25 people found this helpful. Translate to English. Язык Microsoft Store: United States - English. Path of Exile Review [Xbox One] – Path to Excellence? Path of Exile. Path of Exile is a long-form loot grind, with a huge leveling system. It can feel a little too familiar at first, with the same basic combat loop you’ve played in a dozen other games. But after a while, after quite a while actually, the game takes on enough of its own personality. That, and it’s free. Having just been released on Xbox One this month I took a deep dive into the game, which had been doing reasonably well on PC since it released in 2013. It’s marketed as a free-to-play game, with no pay-to-win mechanics, and that holds true on console as well. I put in a lot of hours in the game without ever feeling stuck or underpowered for any situation. Full disclosure, after several hours with the game I did use a publisher provided code to boost a little and see some later game content. Unfortunately, with the release of Destiny 2, I can see this loot grinding fantasy adventure disappearing, as well as most games, at least for the next few months. While you won’t be playing in first person view, nor firing amusingly named firearms, you will spend a similar amount of time wandering the lands searching for better loot. All the standard classes are represented at the beginning of the game, from the magic user to the bow wielder and the dude in heavy armor. I played them all but spent most of my time with the witch class. The early several hours of the game are exactly what you should expect. The game follows your journey through some miserable fantasy purgatory, complete with zombies and monsters. You’ll be given some standard quests to clear out areas, find loot or kill named beasties, and the combat is like every other top down loot grind. With a collection of skills and spells locked to each button, you manage mana, health and loot as you whittle away at the hordes before you. Sometimes your character misses which adds an unamusing level of frustration to the mix, but most of the time gameplay is pretty standard for the genre. There seems to be a deep lore to the game as well, all nicely voiced and with considerable grit. You’re an exile, sent this dreary land as have several others. After that, it blurs with every other fantasy game with a lot of names that are impossible to remember. No, you don’t play Path of Exile to get swept away in an epic story. You play it for the grind. Although the aforementioned combat loop might feel very familiar with you’ve played anything like it, from Diablo and Torchlight to older titles like Titan Quest, it’s remarkably well made. Aside from the very beginning before you’ve had a chance to acquire some skill ‘gems’, there is something simple and pleasant with Path of Exile. It presents itself as this deeply complicated game where weapon and item descriptions take paragraphs to explain their various powers. And while I’m sure some players will enjoy making pixel perfect loadouts, it’s easy enough to forget about that and just grab the best gear in simple terms and have a blast anyway. That being said, the inventory system, a core part of the experience feels, like the random misses, purposely irritating. Weapons can, in theory, be equipped to either hand, although for reasons beyond my understanding, sometimes they can’t. My witch, for instance, wields dual wands because she’s awesome. But for whatever reason, the game sometimes doesn’t like her using particular wands in particular hands. Maybe there is some harder to understand mechanics, but I can’t work out what that is. On top of that, items equipping and unequipping items with gems attached seems more difficult, to the point where it can be easier to remove the gems, move the item as necessary, then reattach the gems. It makes what could be simple, seconds long dives into the inventory screen feel much longer. And on top of that, the inventory feels quite small forcing you to discard or drop a lot of items as you play. Journeys to and from the hubs with vendors aren’t frequent. Later game play adds more exciting spells, equipment and weapons to do battle with. Although Path of Exile clearly wouldn’t have the same budget as the titanic Diablo, it is most noticeable in the graphics. While wizards in Diablo fire grandiose lasers that explode, witches in Path of Exile use much less visually exhilarating spells, even in the later game. But that doesn’t make it less enjoyable when your character is higher level and can see the hours you put into the game paying off. Obviously, this is exactly the kind of game best enjoyed with a friend, when you can keep your idle hands busy while chatting away and cutting down unending throngs of demons. You know, normal friend stuff. It doesn’t add much more to the game, other than having someone to talk to, but it certainly enriches the experience. Path of Exile comes recommended for a lot of reasons. While not exactly groundbreaking, nor particularly exciting to look at or listen, its gameplay is addicting, frequently gratifying, and as deep or as simple as you like it to be.
