Path of Exile is best described as a Diablo-like isometric RPG, but the similarities are superficial. It's already available for PC, and it's hugely popular there. In reality, Path of Exile offers players far more freedom to customize their characters and skills, and it's set in a large online world brimming with quests, loot, and gothic, eldritch horrors. Oh, and it's free — but not in the pay-to-win sense of the word. Path of Exile is funded 100 percent by purely cosmetic, non-gameplay-affecting DLC. It's a rare gem indeed. We went hands-on with the Xbox One version of Path of Exile at GDC 2017. Here's what Xbox players can expect. Developed by Grinding Gear Games, Path of Exile seemed to appear out of nowhere in 2013. The game launched against a backdrop of criticism for Diablo III's real-money auction house, and its apparent shift in tone to something a little brighter. Blizzard itself parodied the "uproar," with a hidden level filled with ponies and rainbows. Either way, Path of Exile felt like it came around at the right time. The game is uncompromisingly dark and brutal, set in a macabre world teeming with all manner of demonic entities and twisted beasts. Path of Exile also sports (optional) competitive player-versus-player combat, a persistent online world, and some of the deepest character customization the genre has seen. Customization. Path of Exile's skill gem system is perhaps most easily compared to Final Fantasy 7's "Materia." Unlike other action RPGs, you can pick and choose from literally any of the hundreds of skills in Path of Exile, as abilities come in the form of colored gems. Say, for instance, you socket a fire skill into your gear; you can then customize that fire skill multiple times over, choosing up to five modifying support gems. Perhaps you want your fire spell to deal damage in a cone, split into multiple projectiles or chain from enemy to enemy — all of those combinations are available, and much more, powering an utterly bewildering assortment of character options. Beyond active skills, you can build your character in a more permanent way using Path of Exile's gargantuan skill tree. Once again, this system appears to have, at least in part, been inspired by Final Fantasy, notably FFX's Sphere Grid. When you craft a new character, you can choose from one of six archetypes: Duelist, Shadow, Marauder, Witch, Ranger, and a Templar. Each of these has further Ascendency classes which allow you to customize even further, and you can unlock a Scion class eventually, as well. Depending on your class choice, you will start at a preordained position on the Path of Exile skill tree, which contains a certifiably-insane 1,325 passive upgrades. Every level up and certain quests grant an extra point to spend in the passive tree, which allows you to customize your playstyle. Naturally, you won't get enough points to buy every skill, so focusing on specifics is best. Imagine a Necromancer who also wields lightning, or a Witch who focuses on fast-casting fire spells. In addition to mundane passives such as increased magic damage, there are also more notable Keystone skills that grant benefits in exchange for tradeoffs. Necromantic Aegis, for example, grants your shield properties to your undead army, rather than yourself. If you want to check out Path of Exile's skill tree, it's available online. Loot and economy. As an always-online game, Path of Exile has a powerful in-game economy, which encourages players to scavenge and trade powerful items. Since Path of Exile's skills are also items, rare abilities might be worth more to trade than actually equip, particularly if they don't match your playstyle. The same goes for weapons, armor, and other gear that you will find in abundance throughout Path of Exile's sizeable world. Unlike most RPGs of this type, Path of Exile doesn't have a traditional "gold"-based economy. Instead, players barter consumable items. As a result, Path of Exile has no artificial money sinks and isn't plagued by real money traders (RMT) whose sole goal is to disrupt the economy by harvesting and selling in-game currency online. Path of Exile may allow you to upgrade items, identify mysterious artifacts, or grant access to an end-game area. Grinding Gear Games says some items are so rare that you might only read about them on forums. Gameplay and world. Path of Exile is set on the continent of Wraeclast, which Grinding Gear Games describes as a "dark, brutal" place. Path of Exile hopes to rekindle the magic of gloomy, realistic fantasy RPGs, ditching what is described as the "trend towards bright, cartoony RPGs." Expect corrupt, demonic dungeons, haunted mines, Lovecraftian undersea caves, and abandoned castles, full of nasties hungry for (your) blood. Superficially, Path of Exile plays similarly to Diablo, with the key difference that you will encounter other players passively while you explore its world, although PvP play is separate. Path of Exile is a permanently connected game, but you will not need an Xbox Live Gold subscription to play it solo. As you might expect, you can also squad up and explore Wraeclast too, building characters to complement each other's skills and abilities. Replayability is a key aspect of the game, where both items and areas are procedurally generated. End game content offers infinite new ways to play, with competitive leagues, a constant cycle of new expansions and other updates, funded by what Grinding Gear calls "ethical microtransactions," that provide only cosmetic bonuses (take note, devs.) Path of Exile could keep you busy for a long, long time. When will Path of Exile be available? Path of Exile is slated for a 2017 launch, more specifically towards the end of the year. Naturally, the control schemes had to be reworked for consoles, including the Xbox Live API for achievements and partying up. Xbox One players will get their own servers, separate from the PC version. Moving forward, Grinding Gear Games is aiming to synchronize updates and free expansions between PC and Xbox One. The Xbox One version of the game will launch with all previous content and updates, including the various under-the-hood fixes and graphical improvements the game has received since its launch. Path of Exile's business model allows it to be perpetually updated, and Grinding Gear Games has found a ton of success with its efforts so far. Hopefully, bringing it to Xbox One will bring expose the game to an entirely new audience, to help it grow even further. The notion that a game could actually be free to play but remain balanced for those who don't want to pony up the cash is pretty rare. With more and more developers putting gameplay-affecting micropayments in their games, it's nice to see others take a stand against the practice. We'll be on task to let you know how Path of Exile is growing in the coming months ahead, so keep it locked to Windows Central for all the latest information. Path of Exile. Latest Stories. Path of Exile is Available Now on Xbox One. We’ve been working on the Xbox One version of Path of Exile for more than two years and have waited with great anticipation for its release. That day has finally come and we’re so glad to welcome new members to our growing community! If you’re looking to sink your teeth into an action RPG that offers deep character and item customization, gritty gameplay, and an unforgiving atmospheric world, then Path of Exile is for you. Path of Exile is free, and none of its optional microtransactions convey a gameplay advantage. Its development is made possible through optional purchases by the community in the form of Supporter Packs and all the content, including our latest expansion, The Fall of Oriath , is included for free. If you’d like to party with other players online, then an Xbox Live Gold membership is required. The sprawling Passive Skill Tree is one of the hallmarks of Path of Exile and enables extremely varied character builds for maximum replayability. All the character classes are present on one interconnected skill tree. With some careful planning, you can access any area of the tree with any class you choose. This flexibility means that it’s entirely possible to create unorthadox character setups. A traditional witch class might stick to simply using spells and the power of necromancy, but in Path of Exile, your witch can become an axe-wielding melee character. To further diversify you and control your character’s destiny, you can also socket craftable jewels into the skill tree to boost damage or change the mechanics of your character altogether. When you’re getting started, it can sometimes be helpful to follow a build guide until you’ve got your footing. Our passionate community regularly posts and maintains a variety of build guides that can be found in the Class Forums. There is a built-in tutorial that you can check for helpful tips along the way but if you’re looking to go deeper and take totally master the full potential of Path of Exile’s game mechanics, you could consider checking our community-managed wiki. We’ve recently extended our core content to a complete 10 act storyline, but this certainly doesn’t mark the end of Path of Exile ‘s development. Every 13 weeks, we release a new Challenge League. These are temporary leagues that offer a tantalizing twist on regular gameplay where players can compete for glory and rewards! In addition to maintaining consistently fresh gameplay, we also provide significant updates to the game including full expansions every six months. We pride ourselves on maintaining an active relationship with our community. We do this by posting news updates about the game five days a week and by interacting with players on our Official Forum, Facebook and Twitter. If you’re keen to immerse yourself in all things Path of Exile , come meet us over there. Once again, we can’t express how happy we are to be bringing Path of Exile to Xbox One. If you love endless loot, diverse gameplay and a dark aesthetic, then we encourage you to download Path of Exile today! We hope to see you in Wraeclast soon. Path of Exile Coming Soon to Xbox One. We’re excited to announce that Path of Exile is coming to Xbox One this year! Our game is a modern twist on the traditional isometric Action RPG (ARPG), played on a persistent online realm where players conquer foes and hunt for rare items together. As your wealth grows, you can trade your items to build the ultimate character. We started developing Path of Exile 10 years ago, as a small group of friends who met playing online ARPGs. After seven years of development, we launched Path of Exile on PC to great acclaim, winning Gamespot’s PC Game of the Year and other awards. Support from our 16 million players enabled us to expand Grinding Gear Games over the next few years to a team of over 90 people focused on expanding Path of Exile . At its core, our game is about character customization. We’ve designed it so that choices matter and experimentation pays off. Link your skill gems with support gems to drastically modify their behavior. Find powerful items that completely change the way your character works. Choose from over 1,300 passive skills spread out on the iconic skill tree and even socket jewels to modify the tree itself. Almost everything can be modified through crafting, from your items, to jewels, to chests you encounter and even the areas you play through. As game designers, we love the fact that everyone has a unique character build. With each update, we add more customization options. We feel very strongly about the business models of free-to-play games so we made sure to completely separate our monetization from gameplay — there’s no way to pay to improve the power level or wealth of your characters in Path of Exile . If you have a valuable item, everyone knows you’ve earned it. When it launches later this year, the Xbox One version will include all five major expansions in addition to the gigantic 3.0.0 expansion we’re releasing on PC later this year. To say we’re excited about this launch is an understatement. We’re proud of what our team has created, and look forward to delivering years of entertainment to Xbox One gamers.

New expansion, new gear, new platform. by Alessandro Fillari on Jun 18, 2017 11:35 AM. You are now subscribed. Path of Exile has been a bit of oddity for the years it's been out on PC. As a free to play loot based action RPG, it's got a reputation for holding its own against larger titles like Diablo III, and has since built a large and dedicated following of its own. Now, they're gearing up for their largest expansion in years with The Fall of Oriath, which brings players back to where the story began, and also the launch of the upcoming Xbox One release. During the Microsoft press conference, we caught a trailer for its release on Xbox One, which marks the first time the game is playable on consoles. While on the show floor, we had some time to speak with the developers about the recent expansion, and played an early build of the Xbox version--which will feature all content from its PC older brother. For those not in the know, Path Of Exile puts players in the role of a recent exile from the city of Oriath. As one of several exiles, Path of Exile's take on classes, you'll find yourself shipwrecked on an island and must fight your way back to the city to dish out vengeance. But after your many battles, you find that destroying one of the island's most dangerous creators results in unleashing an ancient evil that plunges the city of Oriath into chaos, leading to even greater dangers for the world at large. While at our session, the developers spoke about the growth they've seen over the years and what led them to overhauling a good portion of the game for the next major update. Back in December, the developers at Grinding Gear Games saw over one million players logged in for the first time at any given time. In addition to the year over year growth in players, the developers recently released their Atlas of Worlds expansion, which also brought in higher numbers. They saw this as an opportunity to bring in their next expansion. In the Fall of Oriath update, which is the largest expansion to date, they're adding in an additional five new story acts taking players through the city and its many areas, new gear, new graphical updates and tweaks--including 4K support--an overhauled difficulty system which features more organic challenge and difficulty growth, and a brand new upgrade system called Pantheon, which allows the exiles to claim the power of the gods for themselves. In addition to the expansion, which launches next month on PC, the developers also gave us some hands on time with the console release, which they had been quietly working on for some time. Much of the UI and general control feedback had been reworked, allowing primarily for ease of use on controllers for extended periods. While some skills had to be reworked, due to the lack of precise mouse controls, the console is largely intact with its PC counterpart. I was quite impressed with how smooth and intuitive it was. Usually it's difficult translating isometric games like this to the console, but the developers did a surprisingly solid job with the port, and it feels like it can easily stand toe-to-toe with the original. Though cross play with PC players won't be possible, mostly due to gameplay changes and system infrastructure, the Xbox release will have all the same content as the PC version. With the Fall of Oriath expansion coming July, and the console launch being set for later this year--remaining free-to-play--the future of the free action/RPG is looking bright, and with a new player base coming in soon, the Path of Exile community is looking to increase even further. For more information on Path of Exile and other titles from E3 2017, check back with us on our E3 2017 page. Path of Exile Ties Down an Xbox One Release Date. We’ve been reporting for a little while now about the Fall of Oriath update to MMOARPG Path of Exile, which is also tied together with the game’s impending arrival to the Xbox One. On the official forums, Grinding Gear Games has officially confirmed the Path of Exile console release date. Xbox One players will get to begin their adventures in the world of Wraeclast on Thursday, August 24th. As stated before, the release will include the full game as a free-to-play title, including the recently-released Fall of Oriath content pack. While the game will be completely free for everyone, those who are interested can now purchase a First Blood starter pack in the Xbox One Store. The bundle offers 200 points to spend on cosmetics in the game’s store, the First Blood Weapon Effect, and an extra Stash Tab. Our Thoughts. Turns out that the beta testing went by in pretty short order! We hope that Xbox One players and fans of ARPGs are able to find something to like once Path of Exile makes its console debut. Unique Fragments now follow the “Map to Maker” rule for allocation. Updated class portraits for the Scion and the Ascendant classes. Harbingers now drop fewer stacks of currency shards, but these shards have reliably higher stack counts. This results in a higher total number of currency shards than before. Harbingers now appear more frequently in Map areas. More powerful Harbingers now appear more frequently. The volume of shards they drop has been increased, and they are also better dressed. You now need to complete 50 Harbinger End-game maps to complete the “End Game Grind” challenge (down from 100). Minions spawned by Harbingers were granted a resistance to all damage types that decayed over time. This is now multiplicative with other forms of damage taken. The Harbingers from Act 6 onwards now have a chance to spawn an Obelisk when they summon monsters. These obelisks have a variety of skills. Increased the speed of most Harbinger encounters. Increased the speed that Harbingers can deploy minions. We’re also slightly increasing the number of shards dropped by Harbingers. Reduced the chance of getting lower-value shards from Harbinger drops in yellow- and red-tier maps. The Beachhead Improvements: The chance of The Beachhead map being created by a Harbinger’s Orb has been increased. The Beachhead map now has a wider variety of monsters. Monsters slain as part of the Beachhead portal encounter now don’t drop items, but still award experience. Upon completing The Beachhead portal encounter, the Obelisks now will shatter and drop shards. Completing the encounter awards significantly more items. The encounter itself has been rebalanced, and players now have to defeat an especially powerful Harbinger as part of it. Monsters in The Beachhead now will drop items, so that players using Animate Weapon can replace their minions. Currency Shards from The Beachhead final encounter now have more concentrated stacks. Harbingers in The Beachhead now drop more white items. Reduced the distance at which enemies are targeted. This will prevent targeting enemies that are not on the screen, but will not affect most skills. The damage levels of Righteous Fire when used by monsters and rogue exiles have been reduced. The damage of Spectral Throw as used by Templars in The Ravaged Square has been reduced. Charged Dash has been corrected to have its intended scaling. It now scales up by +1% base damage each level, starting at 90% of base damage. The Ravaged Square now has fewer Heretical Wards. Reduced the damage of the boss of the Death and Taxes unique map. Predatory Scorpions now use their burrow attack less frequently. Updated the Labyrinth to not be able to spawn Darkshrine effects that could overwrite a Darkshrine effect already in the Labyrinth. Lunar Devotees now only summon one Ice Elemental at a time, but these are now tougher and do a more powerful explosion on death. Read our review here. Path of Exile is coming to Xbox One this year. By Sherif Saed, Thursday, 19 January 2017 14:15 GMT. Path of Exile’s console debut is happening later this year on Xbox One. Path of Exile, the celebrated isometric action-RPG from indie studio Grinding Gear, has been available only on PC for a good long while in various forms. The free-to-play title will be making the jump to consoles, though, with an Xbox One version scheduled for release this year. Grinding Gear confirmed that the game will also be free-to-play on Xbox One, and will include all content currently available in the PC version, including the upcoming 3.0.0 expansion. That said, each platform will play on a separate realm, so no cross-play between the two. “This is due to small gameplay differences between the two versions, such as the number of Flask slots and how some skills are targeted,” the developer explained in a blog post. With that in mind, the same schedule for seasons, as well as content updates, will be the same across PC and Xbox One. “We’re really excited about this release. It represents over a year of work from a small strike team within our studio – the guys who also created our DirectX 11 version,” the announcement said. No other details were confirmed, such as a solid release date, or whether other platforms will be getting the game in the future. Sometimes we include links to online retail stores.
