Phantom Dust re-release hits Xbox One, PC tomorrow for free. That escalated quickly. Phantom Dust, one of the biggest surprise announcements at E3 2016, just got its last: It’s coming free tomorrow to Windows PC and Xbox One, Microsoft's head of games marketing, said today. Excited to announce a fan favorite Phantom Dust will re-release exclusively tomorrow for free on @Xbox One & @Windows 10! pic.twitter.com/q8lmn4yeIh. — Aaron Greenberg (@aarongreenberg) May 15, 2017. Polygon got a first look at the updated Phantom Dust earlier this month. Adam Isgreen, the game’s creative director, said the game would be updated to add a 16:9 aspect ratio, and support for 1080p or 4K resolution depending on the user’s display. “We haven’t changed anything about the way that the original game worked,” Isgreen said. “So if people want to grind and they want to play exactly like they did when the original game came out, that is all in place. Everything about how the game works and functions is there. We really wanted to allow people to jump into multiplayer and play immediately.” A new version of Phantom Dust, the 2005 card-collecting/strategy game on Xbox was first announced at E3 2014, though a year later Microsoft quietly walked back those plans. Greenberg later said the game wasn’t in active development, but it wasn’t canceled outright, either. At E3 2016 , Loftis said Phantom Dust would be updated for modern times. "We're using the original assets from the Phantom Dust that was released by Microsoft Japan in 2003," she said. "We are updating some key parts of it. We are updating it with modern Xbox Live. . The game, when it came out, was very of its time." Cult Classic Phantom Dust Free on Xbox One and Windows 10. At Team Xbox we put gamers at the center of everything we do and we are driven to build the best platform on which to create and play games. We’ve heard the feedback and passion from fans about this Xbox classic, and for this re-release on modern devices, we’ve decided to give it away for free. Yes, free. You can download Phantom Dust today on Windows 10 PC and the Xbox One family of devices (via Xbox Play Anywhere) at no cost. Phantom Dust is such a unique game, that when it was released for the original Xbox in 2004 in Japan, it was hard to classify. We decided at the time to not release it in the United States, although it was already localized in English. A card game plus an action game with quirky Japanese style and a post-apocalyptic setting? Who’d ever heard of such a thing? While Phantom Dust did get released in the U.S. through another publisher, it did so as a limited release to a passionate audience – an audience that was still playing it online the day we turned off the original Xbox multiplayer servers. It became a cult classic, and for over a decade, fans have found ways to continue to play the game on modified original Xbox’s, or via special LAN tunneling programs on the Xbox 360’s back-compatible version. Why? What was so special about this game that it garnered such a following? Why do the fans that played the original remain as dedicated and passionate about it today as they did years ago? Just what was so special about it? It’s easy to say a game is unique, and that terminology is thrown about quite a bit these days, but in the case of Phantom Dust , it was and still is true. It is wholly unique, and you will not find another game like it. While the rest of the gaming world has caught up with the idea of using cards and deck building in different genres, it remains a unique proposition in Phantom Dust – an action-combat game for up to four combatants set in highly destructible arenas in which you choose from over 300 skills to build your arsenal of attacks, defenses, and special abilities. Draw odds and deck-building strategies collide with action combat, resulting in battles in which both wits and reflexes matter. For solo players, it has a 15+ hour campaign that takes you through a story of loss, isolation, and belief, set in a world ravaged by a strange etheric dust. On the multiplayer side, it features up to four-player games with a host of options and incredible team combat dynamics. It features collectible card game mechanics, in which you earn skills and credits through play and visit the in-game shop to buy skills in random packs or pick specific ones from the incredible diversity of over 300 skills the game offers. There’s a skill for anything you could possibly think of, allowing the creation of generalist combat decks to specific ones that require unique play strategies, great timing, combinatorial teamwork, or good draws to completely obliterate opponents in moments. Its excellent balance and the very nature of the game (and 13 years of play) has never resulted in a “perfect” deck being created. We didn’t give Phantom Dust a chance to really find its audience when it was first released, and while visually it remains a product of the era it was created in, its gameplay is still just as compelling and unique today as it was then. We invite everyone to see that for themselves, and whether you’re an experienced Esper (humans who can manipulate the phantom dust element that the game is named after) or a totally new player (which most will be!), we encourage you to download the game, jump into multiplayer with some friends (with cross-device play, you can play against friends regardless of platform), and discover why this game is truly unique. A mix of an RPG, tactics, and action. Remember this is an Xbox classic and people keep trying to compare it to current or even last gen, it doesn't work like that. Most current gamers don't have a connection to such a time and that explains the dull reviews or ratings. It has a bit of an anime\cyberpunk style on design and story, but gameplay is solid. It is still entertaining and still able to set itself apart from most games. Got to appreciate one of the first games with arena destruction too. Overall, it's different, fun, solid, and free. don't hate kids. 76 out of 80 people found this helpful. Original Xbox Game Reborn - Free?! WOW! This could be Microsoft testing the waters. If fans get rabid about Phantom Dust and play the heck out of it, there is the possibility that they will green light the sequel. Let's hope Microsoft thinks the player numbers are good enough to commit to new games in the series and give us some good news about it's future at E3. I never played PHANTON DUST on release. I bought it in 2009 for $1.99 when Gamestop was clearancing out Xbox, and I actually didn't play it until 2013, mainly because I was turned off the card collecting aspect. I have played games like KARTIA, EYE OF JUDGEMENT, and just about every other trading card game, and rarely liked them. Phantom Dust does the card strategy thing far better than most and has an addictive quality the others don't have, as well as an interesting story and characters. There is a cult following that is very vocal about their love of this game, I am not one of them, but I understand their passion. This game gets an easy 8/10 from me. 64 out of 66 people found this helpful. One of the best xbox games but. Phantom dust is absolutely one of the best xbox game you could try though there are a couple things to take note of. This is an xbox original title so the graphics look dated also the controls feels a bit stiff at times and with a learning curve that's not the best it will turn some people off. With all this I would still recomend this to anyone who is looking for something more unique coupled with a soundtrack that combines classic and electronic musical styles, a deck bulding combat style of gameplay unlike anything even when compared to other games today, and with a story that is just as deep and interesting this is a game that you shouldn't pass up. 155 out of 166 people found this helpful. A 2004 Original That Still Holds Up Today! There is no game that is like Phantom Dust, it is unique, stylish, mechanically interesting, and has a campaign that effectively gets new players familiar enough with powers and rules to be multiplayer ready. This also has a thoughtful story with one of the best soundtracks in gaming(love the bar music) which includes a mix of classical songs altered by industrial stylings. This game also just reeks of style in its familiar but dream like world. Mechanically Phantom Dust plays like most action games you might have played, you lock on and attack. However, there are over 300 abilities and all of them have different stats some are long range some are short; some abilities have a straight line tregetory while others will go in a parabola, others crawl along the ground. Now in order to control the vast ammount of powers at disposal the game has you access the the powers like a card game; build an arsenal(deck) which has limits on how many abilities can be brought. I've reached character lim. 42 out of 43 people found this helpful. A Great Game and its Free! I can't believe that Microsoft is giving away this game! I remember I had to get this game imported before Majesco released it stateside. Back then it was one of the most beautiful games out there. Yes towards the end it got difficult but with all these new features like cross platform saves and play, this old gem keeps getting better. Yes the framerate lock would be good to get rid of so we can experience the game better but awesome job Microsoft! 31 out of 32 people found this helpful. An excellent MP game. While this remaster does have some minor flaws such as the lobby chat no longer working automatically, this is still an excellent and unique game. The main thing to understand is that the game really shines in multiplayer, not the campaign. The campaign is essentially a dated tutorial. It does teach you how skills work, and has an interesting storyline. But the computer doesn't teach you how real players move. What will draw you into this game is the arsenal building and online play. Give online play a fair chance and I doubt you'll be disappointed. 35 out of 36 people found this helpful. Great for Budget Systems. I have an older i5 Surface Pro 3, there aren't many games I can play on it, but Phantom Dust works really well in windowed with glow and shadows turned off. Some things are a bit archaic as far as menu options go, and I wish controls were rebindable, but I understand that the developers didn't have access to he source code and couldn't change more things about the game. Either way it's crazy fun and especially great with a controller. 20 out of 20 people found this helpful. The Greatest is Back. The most orginal game idea in 2004 is now just as entertaining 13 years later. While the graphics are buffered up a little bit to support HD gaming the first impression will be a instant turn off for most. Outside of that the best online competitive is back by mixing a card game with an arena fighter your getting the best of both geners everytime you load the game up. 90 out of 100 people found this helpful. Got me hooked. Game is interesting and simple but also difficult. multiplayer is fun but does have connection issue. For new players please note THIS IS A REMASTER, NOT A REMAKE. It's old style and classic so don't expect the best story line and graphics, the graphics were improved and given more detail. Also waiting for the new phantom dust. 47 out of 51 people found this helpful. Best game i've ever played. I've never heard about this game before it got re-released. It's a fantastic game that's basically your favorite anime battles. While i really like the game i hardly know any of the controls and because i don't have an xbox controller it doesn't make it easier. So if the devs could implement a screen to see all the keybindings then i would be pretty happy. 32 out of 35 people found this helpful. Translate to English. The re-release of card battle RPG arena fighter, Phantom Dust, will launch tomorrow for free on Xbox One and Windows 10. In a tweet, the Head of Xbox games marketing Aaron Greenberg announced that the fan favourite would be available at no cost and exclusively as an Xbox Play Anywhere title on Microsoft's platforms. News of the re-release first broke during last year's E3 conference and boasted that the game would use the original assets but now support the current ecosystem of Xbox Live. Additionally, earlier this month we were able to confirm some of the changes coming to this version of the game, including visual upgrades and updates to the single-player campaign which allow players to skip missions after failing them 3 times. Hopefully, this re-release will tide over those excited for the Phantom Dust reboot which is still on hold due to the closure of development team Darkside Game Studio. Phantom Dust's original release scored an 8.5 in our review due to the depth of both the single player and online components of this cleverly disguised card battle game. Phantom Dust launches free today on Xbox One, Windows 10. By Tom Phillips Published 16/05/2017. The new re-release of Phantom Dust will launch for free today on Xbox One and Windows 10, Microsoft has announced. A four-player action game with combat customised by collectible cards, Phantom Dust was originally arrived on the first Xbox back in 2004. It also hosts a single-player campaign. Sound confusing? It is a bit. Helpfully, Microsoft has published the following explainer: Phantom Dust is a Microsoft-developed game, directed by Panzer Dragoon's Yukio Futatsugi. And while it didn't find huge commercial success upon its original Xbox launch, it did become a favourite of Phil Spencer - then Microsoft Studios vice president, now boss of all Xbox. There was an attempt at a sequel (confusingly also named Phantom Dust) which ultimately did not come to pass - and so, now, we're getting this re-release instead. It looks like Phantom Dust isn't live on the Windows 10 Store or the Xbox One Store yet but it should go up sometime within the next few hours. Phantom Dust's continued existence on Xbox has been a long, strange story. It remains to be seen whether this surprise re-release is the end or just a chapter mark - this would be a good way to assess interest for a potential sequel, after all. Either way, Phantom Dust is going from hard-to-find cult classic to spruced-up freebie and that's pretty cool. Xbox One-Exclusive Phantom Dust Gameplay Footage Leaked. Phantom Dust footage features player-versus-player combat and destructible environments. Last updated by Zorine Te on March 19, 2015 at 6:25PM. You are now subscribed. New footage has emerged of Microsoft's new Xbox One game Phantom Dust. The game was being developed by Darkside Games before the studio was shut down last month. Now, Kotaku has leaked footage from "a source who worked on the game" that showcases Phantom Dust's gameplay. Despite the closure of Darkside Games, Microsoft confirmed with GameSpot that Phantom Dust is still in development, and that it would share more details on the game closer to release. No further information has been revealed since then. The video shows what Darkside Games had worked on prior to Microsoft cutting ties with the studio, leading to it being shut down. In it, two players battle using a variety of abilities, and the environment crumbles around them when shot at. Phantom Dust is an Xbox One reboot of the 2005 Xbox game of the same name. According to the source, the plan was to make the reboot "70% original game, 30% new." "Over time that turned into 'remake Phantom Dust,' so that was our goal for the last half of development. We were going to update and streamline a very dated game (especially their menu system and horribly paced single player), but otherwise it was going to be a reboot/remake. I'd say we were probably trending towards an 85% remake, 15% new," the source said. We don't know what the new game will be like now, but what would you like to see in a Phantom Dust reboot? I've only played a little, but it seems like a decent remaster of the game. 7 out of 7 people found this helpful. They should do this with The Warriors. 19 out of 24 people found this helpful. Awesome Dynamic Gameplay! This has become my new favourite multiplayer game. Mixes third person arena combat with a card game like skill system. These skills vary greatly and there is over 300 of them for the player to make a 30 skill arsenal to take into battle. Great singleplayer story too! 6 out of 7 people found this helpful. Hidden Gem. A uniqe action arena game that combines card games with real time action. That's pretty much the reason why you should play this. it's got a surprisingly deep combat mechanics with over 300 abilities to chose from,so the choices are high. The campaign is 20 hours long, the first 2 hours you are going to go through a lot of tutorials though. I did like the story, though you are going to be running around a lot trying to find your next mission. One major problem i do have is that the game crashes some times in multiplayer. Really this game has a olot of hidden potential so i hope that we get an updated game in the future. 8 out of 11 people found this helpful. needs better mouse and keyboard support. as a play anywhere title, the game should show controls for mouse and keyboard too. I found it a little bit annoying/confusuing to figure out which key does what so I can play normally on my computer. Fullscreen mode is also necessary. I don't like playing with a white title bar on top of my screen. One person found this helpful. 30 fps lock. 5 stars once the lock is removed. 4 out of 5 people found this helpful.
