Xbox One backwards compatibility list: What Xbox 360 games are playable on Xbox One? A list of every supported Xbox 360 game, from Alan Wake to Zuma, as well as all exclusives. Xbox One backwards compatibility of Xbox 360 games was Microsoft's big surprise at E3 2015, and since debuting the feature later that year, the publisher has been hard at work rolling out new releases on a month-by-month basis. The experience varies from game to game. According to Digital Foundry's report, all titles receive some baseline improvements - such as the elimination of screen tear "completely on every title" - through to any disc access operations tending to "have less of an impact on performance", meaning Mass Effect's elevator load times and Fallout 3's hitches are reduced. However, while less demanding games such as Braid and N+ perform flawlessly, the more CPU-heavy titles do struggle, with Halo: Reach and Gears of War: Judgement singled out as games that suffer in the emulation process. In terms of features, Xbox 360 backwards compatibility on Xbox One supports: Digital and disc-based games at no additional cost Support for existing saves (through the Cloud), DLC, Achievement progress, and the original dashboard Multiplayer between those playing on Xbox 360 and Xbox One Select Xbox One system features, including Game DVR, Windows 10 streaming and screenshots. Many Xbox 360 games are also currently available on Microsoft's Netflix-style Xbox Game Pass subscription service. Xbox 360 exclusives backwards compatible on Xbox One. How do I use Xbox One Backward Compatibility? The digital titles that you own and are part of the Back Compat game catalog will automatically show up in the “Ready to Install” section on your Xbox One. For disc-based games that are a part of the Back Compat game catalog, insert the disc and the console will begin downloading the game to your hard drive. After the game has downloaded to your hard drive, users will still need to keep the game disc in the drive to play. Does backward compatibility cost extra? Xbox One Backward Compatibility is free and allows you to play select Xbox 360 and Original Xbox games you already own on Xbox One. Is Xbox Live Gold required for backward compatibility? Xbox Live Gold is not required for Xbox One Backward Compatibility. However, it is required for any standard Xbox Live Gold feature like online multiplayer. Will functionality for the Original Xbox games via Xbox One Backward Compatibility change from the Xbox 360 games in any way? Functionality will be very similar. You can play the digital or disc-based game you own, taking advantage of Xbox One features like Game DVR and broadcasting. Since these are the original games, not remasters, Xbox Live services such as online multiplayer and in-game marketplaces that were available on the Original Xbox, will not be available. However, offline multiplayer scenarios such as co-op, party scenarios (multiple controller on one console), and system-link are supported if they were supported on the Original Xbox. With system-link (if game supports the feature), you can play with others across Original Xbox, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Xbox One S and Xbox One X consoles. There are no Xbox achievements for Original Xbox games because this functionality was not available on the Original Xbox at that time of its release. Lastly, game saves will not transfer to Xbox One but once created on Xbox One, the game saves can transfer to other Xbox One consoles through the cloud. Since the release of Xbox One Backward Compatibility with the New Xbox One Experience it has been one of the most popular features included in the update. Xbox fans have been enjoying the opportunity to play some of their favorite Xbox 360 titles on their Xbox One, with more titles being added regularly to the list of available games. In order to address a number of the questions and concerns I receive about Xbox One Backward Compatibility, I wanted to update my previous post on the topic with an overview of the capability, address some Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) and mention the most important element of Backward Compatibility – the current list of Xbox One Backward Compatibly titles (Download the list as a .pdf file). Xbox One Backward Compatibility List. (Last Update: 30 January 2018) Backward Compatibility Features: Available at no additional cost; you don’t have to pay to play games you already own. Keep your Xbox 360 game saves, game add-ons, achievements, and Gamerscore. Enjoy the advanced features of your Xbox One like Game DVR, Screenshots and Windows 10 streaming. Play multiplayer with your friends no matter which console they’re on. Works with disc-based and digital games. TIP: If you use Cloud Saved Games, your saved game data will be accessible on whichever console you’re playing on. How to install and play Xbox 360 backward compatible games on your Xbox One. Disc: For disc-based games that are a part of the Back Compat game catalog, simply insert the disc and the console will begin downloading the game to your hard drive. After the game has finished downloading, you will still need to keep the game disc in the drive to play. Digital: The digital titles that you own and are part of the Back Compat game catalog will automatically show up in the “Ready to Install” section on your Xbox One, and once they are installed they will show up in the Games section of your Xbox One. TIP: To open the Xbox 360 dashboard from within the Xbox One environment, hold the view and menu buttons. How to purchase Xbox 360 games if you don’t own an Xbox 360. If you want to purchase an Xbox 360 title and don’t own or have access to an Xbox 360, you can still purchase the game digitally online from the Xbox marketplace. Simply log into your account at http://www.xbox.com and navigate to the catalog of Xbox 360 titles. Once you select a title, you will see the option to download it to your Xbox 360. Clicking on the download button actually brings up the purchasing screen. Once you purchase the game and the transaction is complete, the game will be registered to your account. A few things to note: You have to have a valid payment option on file to purchase any title. If a game is free, you’re still required to “purchase” it – you just won’t be charged anything for it. The Xbox 360 Marketplace and the Xbox One Store websites use different architecture, so if you have credit but no payment option associated with your account, you won’t be able to use the credit to purchase Xbox 360 titles. You will have to add a payment option or purchase the title using an Xbox 360 console. Not all Xbox 360 games are backward compatible with Xbox One, but we will be adding more on a regular basis. Microsoft has announced new titles that are going to be added to the Xbox One backwards compatibility list soon. Ekim recently (July, 21) revealed that eight games will join Xbox 360 games to the Xbox One’s backwards compatibility list. Officially announced to be coming out soon are Halo Wars , Skate 3 , Bioshock , Bioshock 2 , Bioshock: Infinite , and Call of Duty: Black Ops . All of these titles are relatively popular, especially relative to a number of the games that have been made available through Xbox One backwards compatibility. Notably, all three Bioshock games are going to be available for Xbox One , as well as Call of Duty game. A top 10 list of requested games for Xbox One backwards compatibility includes a number of Call of Duty games, so the addition of Black Ops should be a good sign for fans. However, some games that are relatively massive, like Skyrim , may take much longer to become available; or, it is possible that it may never become available at all. However, other games that fans are looking forward to playing on their Xbox One have been made available, albeit by accident. But just a few hours after they were made available, they were taken down by Microsoft. Those who downloaded Red Dead Redemption in time are still able to play the game. But Microsoft has made it clear that playing the game is technically a breach of Xbox Live conduct since the company accidently leaked the game. While Microsoft has not officially announced Xbox One backwards compatibility of Red Dead Redemption , the leak probably means that the game is going to be available sometime soon. Update: Feb 06, 2016 – A glimpse of the new Xbox One update has been revealed. The update, which is currently being tested, is going to add a bunch of new features to the Xbox One. It is also the first major update to the system in a few months. Microsoft’s Larry Hryb tweeted a video of the new update. One of the main features that will be included is the ability to set your own pins on the home screen. The feature is shown off in the video, and it looks great . Friends who have increased their Gamerscore the most over the period will be ranked higher. Microsoft is also adding an Avatar Store . The store is going to sell accessories for the Xbox Avatar . Currently, gamers need to go to Xbox.com to make any purchases for their Avatar. The update will streamline the entire process thanks to Windows 10, the operating system the Xbox One switched to on the previous update. Also, gamers will be able to see who is in a party before joining it. There will also be a number of bugs fixed across the system, which is usually included in updates. The update comes less than a week after Microsoft announced that all backwards compatibility games will now be released once they are deemed ready . Microsoft will announce a list of more than 100 Xbox 360 titles playable on Xbox One through backwards compatibility this coming Monday, November 9. Xbox engineering boss Mike Ybarra shared the timing in a tweet. "For those asking, we'll announce the initial set of 100+ backward compatible titles on 11/9," he said. That's just a few days before the New Xbox One Experience, the significant update that introduces backwards compatibility and more, arrives on November 12. For now, you can check out all of the confirmed titles so far, which include games like Borderlands, Fallout 3, Gears of War 1-3, and Mass Effect. Looking beyond the initial list, Microsoft has pledged that new titles will be added to the lineup on a regular basis. In addition, all future Xbox 360 Games With Gold titles will be backwards-compatible. Microsoft has high hopes for Xbox One backwards compatibility. Xbox executive Aaron Greenberg says this new feature will help the Xbox One stand out against rival platforms such as the PlayStation 4. "I think it'll be tremendous. It's another differentiator for us," he said. "We're going to be the only next-gen console delivering backwards compatibility." He added that backwards compatibility, along with Microsoft's game lineup, will lead to a "massive migration" this holiday of Xbox 360 users moving over to Xbox One.
