Microsoft discontinues the Kinect adapter that you need to use the device on newer consoles. Last updated by Eddie Makuch on January 4, 2018 at 2:06PM. Microsoft had big plans for its motion-sensing Xbox camera, Kinect, but things did not work out exactly as the company wanted. And now, after selling millions across its Xbox 360 and Xbox One versions, Kinect is effectively at the end of its days. Microsoft has confirmed that it is no longer producing the Kinect adapter that is needed to connect the Kinect to an Xbox One S, Xbox One X, or other Windows device. "After careful consideration, we decided to stop manufacturing the Xbox Kinect Adapter to focus attention on launching new, higher fan-requested gaming accessories across Xbox One and Windows 10," a Microsoft spokesperson said in a statement to Polygon. The representative declined to say if Microsoft would ever bring Kinect back. However, the company confirmed that the adapter "will no longer be available" to purchase. Originally launched partway through the Xbox 360's life cycle, Kinect sold millions and opened the platform to new types of games, like Dance Central. Microsoft then decided to make it a mandatory part of the Xbox One package, driving up the price of the system at launch to $500. It would later be made optional, allowing Microsoft to bring the price down and attempt to appeal to those with no interest in voice controls or motion sensors. Something else to be aware of is that Kinect voice commands work without the camera, as you can use a headset microphone. Kinect for Xbox One. OUT OF STOCK. Voice Commands. Experience greater convenience and control with Kinect for Xbox One. Navigate your console without lifting a finger. Instantly capture screenshots and game clips. And change TV channels without ever searching for the remote. Cortana comes to Xbox One. Everything you love about Cortana on your Windows 10 devices is now on Xbox One. Use "Hey Cortana. " to call up commands. You can even configure your Xbox One to turn on other devices, like your TV, audio/video receiver, and cable/satellite receiver. Automatic Recognition. Kinect eliminates the need to manually switch or sign into your Xbox account. Be recognized and signed-in automatically when turning on your console, so you can spend more time gaming. Connect with Skype and Twitch. With its 1080p HD camera, Kinect delivers a highly detailed picture, and its microphone array picks out your voice above any other sound in the room, so no one will ever miss a beat. You can even broadcast your gameplay live with picture-in-picture through Twitch. The best Xbox One experience is with Kinect. Additional Accessories. Xbox Design Lab. Personalize your very own Xbox Wireless Controller. Now available. Using an Xbox One Kinect Sensor with an Xbox One S or Xbox One X console. On this page. To use your existing Xbox One Kinect Sensor with a new Xbox One S or Xbox One X console, you'll need an Xbox Kinect Adapter. This adapter lets you connect your Xbox One Kinect Sensor to the Xbox One S or Xbox One X console. Note The Xbox 360 Kinect Sensor is not compatible with Xbox One. The Kinect Sensor and Kinect Adapter ceased manufacturing in November 2017. Microsoft no longer carries inventory of the Kinect Adapter. Customers can check other retail stores for Adapter availability. An offer for people with a Kinect Sensor upgrading from Xbox One ended in March 2017. Step 1: Set up the adapter. Plug the wall plug into the power supply. Insert the round connector of the power supply into the Kinect hub. Insert the Kinect sensor cable into the Kinect hub. Insert the included USB cable into the Kinect hub. You're now ready to connect the adapter to your console. Step 2: Connect the adapter to the Xbox One S or Xbox One X console. Insert the USB 3.0 cable into the left USB port labeled "Kinect" on the back of the console. Your Kinect sensor is now ready to be set up on your console. For best practice, make sure your Kinect sensor and Kinect Adapter are not sitting directly on top of your console. On your console, open the Guide and select System . Select All settings > Kinect & devices . Select Kinect and follow the instructions to set up your sensor. There can be several causes if your Kinect sensor is not responsive or is turned off when you try to use the Kinect Adapter. Try these solutions to fix the issue: Make sure the Kinect sensor is turned on in the console settings. Go to System > All settings > Kinect & devices > Kinect . Power cycle your console. Sometimes the connection between the sensor and the console needs to be reset. To do this, hard boot the console by holding down the power button for 5 seconds until the console shuts down. Disconnect the power supply from the console, and wait 1 minute before reconnecting and restarting the console. Check the connections of the sensor and adapter to make sure each connector is firmly attached. Make sure that the Kinect sensor and adapter are not placed directly on top of the console. The adapter must be powered to pass Kinect information to the console. Check the power supply of the adapter and make sure that the LED is lit. If you still have power issues after checking the power supply, reset the Kinect Adapter power supply by unplugging it for 10 seconds and plugging it back in. If the Kinect Adapter power supply light is not lit, there's no power getting to the power supply. Try another outlet or replace your adapter, if trying another outlet doesn't work. If the power supply light is orange, this means that the adapter is in standby mode and is waiting for the console to respond. Power cycle your console again. If the power supply light is white, this means there is power, and the sensor is active. Power cycling your console should also fix an unresponsive sensor that has power. Xbox One S console has no Kinect port, requires USB adapter (update) Get a free adapter from Microsoft. If you already own an Xbox One Kinect and you're thinking of upgrading to the redesigned Xbox One S console, you should know that the upcoming system is the first Xbox One model to ship without a Kinect port. "In order to make the Xbox One S as compact as possible and make all of these updates, we removed the dedicated Kinect port from the back," said Matt Lapsen, general manager of marketing for Xbox devices, in a post on the Xbox Wire. It will still be possible to use a Kinect with the white console, although you'll need an adapter in order to plug the Kinect into one of the Xbox One S unit's three USB 3.0 ports. The accessory in question, the Kinect Adapter for Windows, regularly costs $49.99. Microsoft will be offering the adapter for free, but only to Xbox One S buyers who already own an Xbox One and an Xbox One Kinect. Eligible customers will be able to order the free adapter on this page once the offer goes live. For now, Microsoft is recommending that interested parties ensure that the serial numbers for their current Xbox One and Kinect sensor are registered with the company's device support site. When Microsoft launched the Xbox One in November 2013, every console came with a Kinect in the box, and the company presented the device as an essential peripheral. Over time, Microsoft gradually moved away from its emphasis on the Kinect. Last October, the company told Polygon that a "vast majority" of Xbox One Kinect owners still use the peripheral, but there are no Kinect games currently in development for the console. At launch, the Kinect was a major piece of Microsoft's push for cable TV functionality. The peripheral features a built-in IR blaster, which allows the Xbox One to control other home theater equipment. An IR blaster is integrated into the front of the Xbox One S, and the back of the unit still features HDMI-in and HDMI-out ports, so the console can still control other devices even if a Kinect isn't plugged in. (The system also includes a port on the back for external IR blasters.) For more on the Xbox One S and Project Scorpio, check out the video below. You can see an image of the Xbox One S console's rear ports above. Microsoft plans to launch the Xbox One S in August. Update: Sometime after the Xbox One S debuts, Microsoft will begin shipping Kinect sensors with the USB adapter in the box, said Jeff Henshaw, group program manager for Xbox, in an interview with Polygon at E3. Henshaw added that Microsoft will sell that bundle for less than the stand-alone Kinect's current price of $99.99. Correction: The Xbox One S console has three USB 3.0 ports, one on the front and two on the back. We've edited the article to reflect this. Update 2 (Aug. 2): Xbox One S buyers who don't already own an Xbox One and an Xbox One Kinect will need to purchase the Kinect Adapter for Windows if they want to use a Kinect with the Xbox One S console. Microsoft has dropped the price of the accessory — it is now available for $39.99, $10 cheaper than before, on the Microsoft Store. As for customers who are eligible for a free Kinect adapter, Microsoft is now telling them to contact Xbox support to request the accessory. Xbox One S Tip: Add a Kinect to Your Console. While the Kinect sensor is considered somewhat controversial by some Xbox fans, it still provides the best way to interact with your console: By voice. But getting Kinect up and running with a new Xbox One S requires a few extra steps. Here’s how it works. You’ll need two things before you can start. The first and most obvious is an Xbox One Kinect Sensor, which I will simply call “Kinect” from here on out. (That said, be sure to use the right version; the Xbox 360 Kinect sensor will not work, for example.) There are two ways that most Xbox One S owners will acquire such a thing: You have one that came with their original Xbox One purchase that they’d like to use with the new console; or you can simply buy one for about $90. (This and some other links here are affiliate links.) Second, you’re going to need an adapter. Unlike the original Xbox One, the Xbox One S does not come with a proprietary Kinect port, so you can’t simply plug the peripheral into your new console. Microsoft currently sells a Kinect Adapter for Windows that costs about $50. And in September, Microsoft will begin shipping a cheaper ($40) Xbox Kinect Adapter for Xbox One S and Windows 10 PC adapter that looks like exactly the same part. So if you can wait, I suppose you could save $10. The adapter is a mess of wires and plugs. Speaking of waiting, you may be able to get the adapter for free: For a limited time, Microsoft is providing a free adapter to customers who have an existing Xbox One console and Xbox One Kinect Sensor, and buy an Xbox One S console, and wish to use the sensor with the new console. But you have to contact Microsoft Support via phone or, better, online chat to get it. IMPORTANT: If you wish to take advantage of this offer, you need to register all three of these devices with Microsoft online before contacting Microsoft Support, and you must have the serial number for all three devices ready, as support will ask you for this information (plus your shipping information). If you do take advantage of the free adapter offer, be prepared to wait about 10 days for it arrive. I did go through this process, and it was time consuming and a bit irritating, but armed with all three serial numbers, I was able to get through it. Make the connection. Once you’ve got all the pieces in place—the Xbox One S console, the Kinect, and the Kinect adapter—you can put it all together. The Kinect adapter is a mess of wires and plugs, but it’s obvious enough that most will be able to string it all together without needing instructions. And the wires are long enough that you shouldn’t have any trouble getting to connected to the Kinect, the console, and power. IMPORTANT: There is one gotcha with the physical connection: The adapter must be plugged into a specific USB port. As you may know, there are three USB ports on Xbox One S, one on the front and two on the back. The Kinect-compatible port is the one next to the HDMI-In port. Microsoft says this port is labeled “Kinect,” but that is not the case on my console. If you do plug Kinect into the wrong port, no worries: You’ll be prompted to move it. You can plug in Kinect while your console is on, it doesn’t matter either way. But when you do plug it in, nothing happens. So you’ll need to visit a few places in Settings to get up and running. Configure Kinect and Cortana. To configure Kinect, navigate to Settings, Kinect & Devices, and then select Kinect. Kinect settings appears. Here, you configure a few basic and obvious settings. But you can also calibrate your Kinect, which is probably a good idea since it’s new to this console no matter how you obtained it. Xbox will actually prompt you to do this, but you can trigger the calibration manually by selecting “I moved my Kinect sensor or I’m having trouble with Kinect” in Kinect settings. Or, if you just intend to use Kinect’s voice functionality—as I do—just select “Kinect doesn’t hear me.” In both cases, a wizard will guide you through the process of calibrating your Kinect, either completely (the first option) or for audio only (the latter). Next, you should choose between Cortana- and Xbox-style voice commands. (Sadly, you can’t use both.) Cortana is new to Xbox One with the August Update, as you may know, and it integrates with the Cortana cloud services and the Cortana apps you may use elsewhere in Windows 10 or your phone. That said, Cortana is much slower than the standard Xbox commands—mostly because it’s much more ponderous to say, “Hey, Cortana” than “Xbox”—so you have a decision to make. I’ll examine Cortana usage on Xbox One S in the future. For now, however, let’s look at the new Cortana settings, which can be found in Settings, System, Cortana. The most important option here is “Cortana can give you suggestions, ideas, reminders, alerts and more.” It’s selected by default, which means that your Xbox One S is using Cortana rather than Xbox-style voice commands. If you turn this option off, however, you’ll be prompted about disabling Cortana and will need to restart the console. After the restart, “Xbox” voice commands—“Xbox, home,” “Xbox, record that” and so on—will work as before. If you do leave Cortana on, there’s a whole world of new capabilities to explore. And while I’ll be saving most of that for future articles, here are two items to get you started. First, Cortana works on Xbox One S much like it does on your Windows 10 PC or phone, and it even presents the same vertical user interface, in this case on the right side of the screen, as its non-console counterparts. You can even view and edit your notebook, and perform other maintenance tasks. Second, when you use Cortana with Xbox One, there’s a handy “Kinect mic for chat” toggle right in the Xbox Guide flyout panel: This lets you toggle the Kinect mic on and off on the fly, and it good to know about if you don’t intend other gamers to hear your mumbling, swearing, and singing to yourself while you compete against them online. Note: It’s also worth mentioning that you don’t need a Kinect to use Cortana on Xbox One: You can use a controller-based microphone as well. That’s OK for gamers, but Kinect is the way to go for anyone who intends to control their console by voice in the living room. I’ll have more about Cortana on Xbox One S in the weeks ahead. How To Get the Kinect Adapter for Xbox One S. Xbox One owners upgrading to the Xbox One S can get a free Kinect adapter for a limited time by following the steps below. Xbox One S does not include the requisite Kinect port included in the original Xbox One design, so this adapter is necessary for playing Kinect games on the new console iteration. By the way, take note that this adapter is exacty the same Microsoft device used to connect a Kinect to a Windows PC via USB.  1. Before applying for the adapter, users should be sure to register their Xbox One S console, original Xbox One Console, and Kinect Sensor. Find the serial numbers for each: The Kinect serial number is a twelve digit number beneath the barcode on the bottom of Kinect The Xbox One serial number is located on a sticker at the bottom of the console The Xbox One S serial number is located on the back of the console. 2. You'll need to copy the serial number for all three devices and register each at https://devicesupport.microsoft.com/en-US/Device/RegisterDevice. 3. Once all three devices are registered, contact Microsoft Support at this address, keeping your serial numbers handy: From there, using your resitered device info, you'll be able to request your adapter. 4. Once your adapter arrives, you'll be able to connect it as a passthrough to your Kinect device by plugging the included USB cable into the left USB port on the back of your Xbox One S. Plug the Kinect cable into the proprietary port, and plug the adapter power cable into a power outlet. You should then be ready to go.  What If I Didn't Already Own an Xbox One? Users purchasing an Xbox One S as their first console can still get the adapter, but they'll need to pay for it. Note that this adapter is exactly the same device as the Windows 10 Kinect Adapter. Microsoft Finally Kills Off Xbox One's Kinect. Kinect won't be sold in stores for much longer. Last updated by Chris Pereira on October 26, 2017 at 6:51AM. Please enter your date of birth to view this video. By clicking 'enter', you agree to GameSpot's. You are now subscribed. Microsoft's Kinect sensor, which sold millions across its Xbox 360 and Xbox One iterations but was often criticized, is officially dead. Ahead of its next earnings report later this week, the company has revealed that it has put an end to manufacturing of the device, meaning those still sitting on store shelves will be the last ones available for purchase. The news was shared by Kinect creator Alex Kipman and Xbox Devices Marketing GM Matthew Lapsen in an interview with Fast Company. Support for the device will continue, so there's no need--at least in the short term--to worry if you're someone who still enjoys playing the odd game that uses it or pausing Netflix with a voice command. This comes as little surprise. Originally launched partway through the Xbox 360's life cycle, Kinect sold millions and opened the platform to new types of games, like Dance Central. Microsoft then decided to make it a mandatory part of the Xbox One package, driving up the price of the system at launch to $500. It would later be made optional, allowing Microsoft to bring the price down and attempt to appeal to those with no interest in voice controls or motion sensors, though seemingly too late for the system to catch up to Sony's competing PS4 in terms of sales. If it had not already been clear, the future of Kinect came into focus when Microsoft released the Xbox One S, the first new iteration of Xbox One. The system revision lacked the necessary port for Kinect, necessitating the use of an adapter for those who still had one laying around. Similarly, the upcoming Xbox One X lacks an integrated Kinect port. Kinect's non-gaming applications have proven to arguably be more useful, even providing medical uses. And while the device itself may now effectively be dead, the technology behind it will live on, as aspects of it are used to power Microsoft's HoloLens augmented reality device. E3 2016: Xbox One S Doesn't Support Kinect Out of the Box. Microsoft's slimmed down Xbox One won't support Kinect out of the box, as the company has confirmed Xbox One S requires an adapter in order to use the motion-tracking peripheral. "In order to make the Xbox One S as compact as possible and make all of these updates, we removed the dedicated Kinect port from the back," Xbox exec Matt Lapsen explained on Xbox Wire. That said, the console will still support Kinect, but requires the "Xbox Kinect Adapter for USB connection," which Microsoft will be giving away for free to those who request one. Check out our Xbox One S gallery below, which shows the lack of a dedicated Kinect port in the back of the console, but also multiple USB ports where the adapter can be connected.
